Between 2009 and 2021 almost the complete beam trawl fleet of the Netherlands switched from conventional beam trawls (BT) to pulse trawls (PT) using electrical stimulation to catch sole, Solea solea. Electric fishing, being banned in the EU in 1988, was made possible in 2006 under a derogation. Over the years stakeholders expressed concern about ecosystem effects. Here we review the research conducted. PT improved the selectivity of the fishery and reduced the ecological side effects. PT caught more sole per hour fishing but less discards and benthos than BT. The transition to PT reduced the surface area swept (lower towing speed), sediment depth of disturbance and associated benthic impacts, as well as fuel consumption. Laboratory experiments with 9 fish and 17 benthic invertebrate species showed that exposure to a commercial bipolar pulse stimulus did not result in harmful effects except in cod. Autopsy of cod sampled from PT revealed that 40% had an internal injury. Injury rates in other roundfish species was low (< 2%) and absent in flatfish. Electrical-induced impacts on biogeochemistry were not observed. The transition increased competition with other fishers which fed the resentment against PT. Governance arrangements under which the number of temporary licenses expanded, undermined legitimacy of the gear, resulting in a ban in 2021. Due to intensified human activities like hydropower development, biodiversity in the upper Yellow River faces severe threats. In 2019, we conducted a survey across all reservoirs in the river section from Longyangxia to Liujiaxia in the upper Yellow River, focusing on key aquatic organisms such as benthic macroinvertebrates and fish. The benthic index of biotic integrity (B-IBI) and the fish stocking index (FSI) were used to assess the river's biotic integrity. We collected 54 macroinvertebrate species with an average biomass of 1.28g/m², predominantly featuring species like Gammarus sp. and Palaemon modestus. Additionally, 39 fish species were captured, with Gymnocypris eckloni, Pseudorasbora parva, and Triplophysa pappenheimi being the most common, with an average weight of 43.27 g per individual. The B-IBI scores ranged from 1.06 to 3.04, averaging 78; the number of native fish species varied from 3 to 15 per location, resulting in an FSI score of 69. This indicated that the biotic integrity of the Longyangxia to Liujiaxia section was common yet still significantly impacted by human activities. Capturing the mechanisms leading to the local extirpation of a species in deep time is a challenge. Here, by combining stable oxygen and carbon isotopic analyses on benthic and planktonic foraminifera and the otoliths of pelagic and benthic fish species, we reveal the paleoceanographic regime shifts that took place in the eastern Mediterranean from 7.2 to 6.5 Ma, in the precursor phase to the Messinian salinity crisis, and discuss the fish response to these events. The stepwise restriction of the Mediterranean–Atlantic gateway impacted the metabolism of fishes in the Mediterranean, particularly those dwelling in the lower, deeper part of the water column. An important shift in the Mediterranean paleoceanographic conditions took place between 6.951 and 6.882 Ma, from predominantly temperature to salinity control, which was probably related to stratification of the water column. A regime shift at 6.814 Ma, due to changes in the influx, source and/or preservation of organic matter, led to pelagic–benthic decoupling of the fish fauna. At that time, the oxygen isotopic composition of benthic fish otoliths reflects higher salinity in the lower part of the water column that is accompanied by a rapid fluctuation in the carbon isotopic composition (a proxy for the metabolic rate), ultimately leading to the local extirpation of the benthic species. Overall, our results confirm that otolith stable oxygen and carbon isotope ratios are reliable proxies for paleoceanographic studies and, when combined with those of foraminifera, can reveal life history changes and migration patterns of teleost fishes in deep time. Continental shelves experience many human pressures with demersal fisheries central to disturbing the ocean floor. However, ecological processes such as predation rates of benthos and their relationship with bottom fishing are often unknown for large marine ecosystems. We examined the amount of benthos consumed by 14 benthivorous fishes, the overlap between benthos predation and bottom fishing (dredge and trawl gear), and temporal trends in benthivorous fish abundance and the number of fishing trips on the northeast US continental shelf. Mean annual predation (biomass of prey removed) and 95% confidence intervals ranged from .0002 (.0001–.0003) to 3967 (1761–7112) t per 10‐min area squared grid cell and prey taxa for these benthivorous fishes. Predation and bottom fishing had overlapping footprints of activity, which were slightly stronger for dredge gear. Trophic success (ratio of prey biomass eaten to the biomass of the benthivore community per grid cell) revealed more Bivalvia, Gammaridea, and Polychaeta eaten in areas targeted by trawling with more fish biomass. In contrast, dredging did not target fish biomass, but these areas had increased (Echinoidea, Gammaridea, and other benthos) or decreased (Ophiuroidea) trophic success relative to dredging footprint, suggesting habitat preferences for benthic prey and demersal fisheries have converged rather than diverged. Despite declines in bottom fishing, recent increases in benthivorous fish abundance and growing interest in ocean floor use suggest that fisheries managers should ensure benthivores have sufficient prey resources relative to their community size and human pressures to promote long‐term sustainability of demersal fisheries and healthy ecosystems. Chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) is a commercially important fish species which are widely distributed in the North Pacific. Based on the fishery data from China's high-sea light-purse seine fishing from 2014 to 2020 and the marine environment factors, a mixed linear model considering the actual spatiotemporal stratification of the catch per unit effort (CPUE) was established to analyze the fixed and random effects of marine environmental factors on the CPUE of chub mackerel and to investigate the relationship between the abundance of chub mackerel resources in the Northwest Pacific and two marine environmental factors: sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a concentration (CHL). The results showed that SST had a significant fixed effect on the CPUE. In contrast, the natural logarithm of chlorophyll (logCHL) had no fixed effect on the CPUE. Based on the monthly analysis, random fluctuations were observed in the impact of logCHL on the CPUE. LogCHL and CPUE show a positive correlation during spawning and wintering periods and a negative correlation during the feeding period. The study showed that when fishery sampling data exhibit spatiotemporal stratification, linear mixed models can effectively incorporate both the fixed and random effects of environmental factors on the CPUE of chub mackerel. Linear mixed models can play an important role in analyzing the fluctuations in resource abundance and the mechanisms governing the formation of fishing grounds for chub mackerel in the Northwest Pacific. The study investigates the pollution characteristics of 16 priority PAHs, accumulated in copepods from a major fishing harbour and its adjacent coastal waters of Veraval, west coast of India. The total PAH accumulation is in the range of 922.16–27,807.49 ng g−1 dw, with the mean concentration of 5776.59 ng g−1 dw. High concentrations of PAHs were present in the copepod samples from inside the harbour. Notably, there was no significant correlation between the lipid content of copepods and the accumulation of PAHs. The molecular diagnostic ratio method (MDR) indicates that the PAH sources are petrogenic in origin, while principal component analysis (PCA) points to petroleum, coal combustion and vehicular emission sources. Total cancerous PAHs (C-PAHs) in the study area dominate by 40% of the total PAHs identified; moreover, the bioaccumulation factor (BAF) is very high in the offshore area, which is also a fishing ground. The global relevance and magnitude of the present study in the Veraval, one of the prime seafood exporting hubs in India, should be dealt with utmost avidity as the accumulation status of PAHs in the zooplankton has never been explored in the Indian coastal waters. Sampling of the North Sea trawl fishery for lesser sandeel (Ammodytes marinus) showed that 96% of the catch weight consisted of the target species, and experimental sea trials demonstrated that the observed small bycatch percentages of haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), mackerel (Scomber scombrus) and grey gurnard (Eutrigla gurnardus) could be significantly lowered by inserting a netting-based sorting device, an Excluder, in front of the codend. The sandeel fishery is conducted with small meshes in the codend, due to the small size and elongated body shape of this species. It is not mandatory for sandeel trawls to have any other selection devices than the small-meshed codend, and this can potentially cause problems with bycatch of unwanted species, if these are abundant on the fishing grounds. Therefore, we sampled the catch composition in this fishery and further, we compared the capture efficiency and species composition of a standard trawl, and one fitted with an additional sorting device called the Excluder. Overall, results showed small percentages of bycatch in the trips sampled and during the trials, the excluder significantly reduced the bycatches of mackerel, grey gurnard, and haddock above certain sizes. For other bycatch species results were inconclusive due to wide confidence limits affected by low bycatch numbers during the trials. The overall capture efficiency for the target species was not affected by adding the excluder in the trawl except for a significant reduction for a few semi-centimetre groups of the largest sizes of the species. Small-scale fisheries have been typically data-limited despite their economic importance for local communities. This is especially true in zones where fishing operations occur in remote areas under harsh weather conditions. Crab fishery in Chile is exclusively artisanal, and marble crab (Metacarcinus edwardsii) has the highest landing records. This species is found in most parts of the coast of Chile, but it is mainly caught in the south of the country (including Patagonia). Fishery management is data-limited, and monitoring has not established the spatial and temporal variability baseline necessary to determine its exploitation status. This fishery is currently evaluated annually under a scheme based on reporting biological and fishery information, primarily from the landing ports and secondarily from fishing grounds. In the present study, we collected data from fishing grounds on board artisanal fishing vessels around 45°S during an annual cycle to establish indicators based on catch per unit effort (above and below minimum legal size), size, sex ratio, and the relationship between weight and size. Our results showed that fishery and biological indicators respond more to seasonal patterns than to expected spatial heterogeneity related to different fishing grounds: proportional stock density (lowest in winter), sex ratio (biased toward males in winter), retained catch (highest in autumn), and released catch (highest in winter), while the average size of the largest 10% of the sample only showed differences between males and females. Additionally, released catch varied according to soak time, which indicates the effectiveness of escape rings incorporated in the traps. These results lead to recommendations related to the current monitoring program, which should include the selection of a limited number of fishing grounds standardized by season and the incorporation of information related to soak time and the presence of escape rings. Nepal holds a high ichthyofaunal diversity, nevertheless, the molecular study of Nepalese fish is still in its early stages. The first record of a cyprinid fish species the Garra kempi Hora, 1921 for Nepal was reported from eastern Nepal's Lohandra River. Both morphology and molecular data affirmed the existence of G. kempi in Nepal's aquatic system. This species was previously reported from China (Tibet) and northern India. The maximum likelihood phylogenetic analysis and pairwise genetic distance based on Kimura 2 parameters using cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (COI) segment sequences (665 bp) also confirmed the identity of the species as G. kempi. The COI sequences of specimens from Nepal formed a monophyletic clade with the sequence of G. kempi from northeastern India and the two contained a pairwise genetic distance of 1.8% only. The new record of G. kempi from Nepal warrants a detailed ichthyofaunal survey for documenting the fish diversity in Nepal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As an economic species widely distributed in the South China Sea (SCS), the purpleback flying squid (Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis) still has a large potential for exploitation, and the variations in its use as a resource are highly correlated with environmental and other factors. In this study, using a generalized additive model (GAM) and gradient forest analysis (GFA), in conjunction with environmental factors, the distribution of purpleback flying squid surrounding the Xisha and Zhongsha islands during the fishing moratorium period was investigated. The results indicated that catch per unit effort (CPUE) had a gradual increase from May to July 2023 in the primary fishing area surrounded the Xisha Islands during May to June, then moved southward towards 13–15° N after July. CPUE is used as an important indicator to reflect the abundance of the fishery, while the GFA results show that CPUE has a better fit than catch in this study. Therefore, the subsequent analysis focused on CPUE. Longitude and sea surface temperature (SST) were of relative higher importance, followed by sea surface salinity (SSS), latitude, chlorophyll a concentration (Chla), sea surface height (SSH), and mixed layer depth (MLD). Longitude and CPUE had a significant, positive correlation. The CPUE gradually increased with latitude within 14–16° N. The CPUE increased slowly as SST increased from 29.5 to 30.5 °C in the primary fishing area. The Chla in this fishing zone was 0–0.2 mg/m3 and displayed a significant positive association with CPUE. Conversely, SSS, SSH, and MLD had negative correlations with CPUE. These findings will promote the sustainable utilization of purpleback flying squid in the SCS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recovery of many groundfish stocks in the Northwest Atlantic has been impeded by elevated mortality among older/larger individuals. The sources of groundfish mortality are generally uncertain, though predation by growing grey seal herds and unreported fishing are thought to be drivers of mortality for Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) on the Western Scotian Shelf and Bay of Fundy (4X5Y), as well as in nearby ecosystems. We developed a statistical catch-at-age model for 4X5Y cod that accounted for grey seal predation and bycatch/discards and tested the model across a broad range of consumption and discard scenarios. We found that most cod mortality was unexplained by seal predation and fishing when cod comprised a small to moderate portion of the grey seal diet. Predation and fishing accounted for slightly more than half of recent cod mortality when cod was highly prevalent in the seal diet (45% by weight) but explained little historical mortality. Bycatch was a minor source of mortality prior to 2019 and accounted for 0.%1–8.1% of recent mortality. Increased sampling of seal diets and monitoring of emerging seal colonies is necessary for reducing uncertainties around seal predation effects in the Northwest Atlantic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Life history characteristics of Watases lanternfish Diaphus watasei from a deep sea fishing ground of the East China Sea were studied. Overall, 452 adult individuals with standard length ranging from 91 to 147 mm were collected in the continental slope during 3 years. The growth pattern and hatching date were inferred from otolith microstructure analysis, and the stomach contents were examined to clarify feeding ecology. Three distinct zones of the otolith microstructure were depicted, the numbers of increments in the central and middle zones of the D. watasei otolith are in the lowest level in myctophid species studied. The maximum number of growth increments indicated a short lifespan of 2 years. The spawning time almost lasted throughout the year, and then two cohorts were separated according to the estimated hatching time. The length–weight relationship revealed a negative allometric pattern and significant difference between the two cohorts, and a significant seasonal difference was also detected in somatic growth pattern. A piscivorous habit dominated by Maurolicus muelleri was revealed across sampling seasons and standard length groups. Overall, D. watasei show distinct life history characteristics compared to coinhabiting myctophids, and such characteristics could reduce interspecific competition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) have measurable impacts on marine ecosystems and reliant fisheries and associated communities. However, how MHWs translate to changes in fishing opportunities and the displacement of fishing fleets remains poorly understood. Using fishing vessel tracking data from the automatic identification system (AIS), we developed vessel distribution models for two pelagic fisheries targeting highly migratory species, the U.S. Atlantic longline and Pacific troll fleets, to understand how MHW properties (intensity, size, and duration) influence core fishing grounds and fleet displacement. For both fleets, MHW size had the largest influence on fishing ground area with northern fishing grounds gaining and southern fishing grounds decreasing in area. However, fleet displacement in response to MHWs varied between coasts, as the Atlantic longline fleet displaced farther in southern regions whereas the most northern and southern regions of the Pacific troll fleet shifted farther. Characterizing fishing fleet responses to these anomalous conditions can help identify regional vulnerabilities under future extreme events and aid in supporting climate‐readiness and resilience in pelagic fisheries. Length-weight relationship (LWR) is an important parameter in the fish biology study since genetic and environmental factors govern fish growth. This study aimed to understand the growth pattern of Sardinella lemuru, related to different locations and seasons, to estimate S. lemuru fishing grounds with good growth patterns of this fish. Specimens (n=3282) of S.lemuru catch were collected at Pengambengan fishing port, Bali, from April 2022 to January 2023. S.lemuru landed at Pengambengan fishing port were caught from three zones of the fishing grounds in Bali Strait(zones 2, 5, and 6). Monthly data of the study area's environmental parameters, including SST and Chl-a, were downloaded from the Ocean Color-SeaDAS website. The relationship between LWR and the environmental parameters was statistically analyzed using the Partial Least Square (PLS) model. The LWR parameters, intercept 'a' and regression coefficient 'b', varied from 0.00261 to 0.12607 and 2.201 to 3.382, respectively. The condition factor ranged from 0.14 to 1.84. Simultaneously, both environmental variables play an important role in the growth of S.lemuru in all zones of the fishing grounds. The PLS analysis of the regression coefficient of the SST and CHL -a variable has a positive relationship with LWR. To compensate for the lack of sub-surface environmental data of the fishing ground, this experiment analyzed the vertical temperature and salinity structure at the fishing points using the gradient - dependent optimal interpolation and Argo profiles in the Kuroshio-Oyashio Confluence region. The reliability of the constructed results was verified by theoretical testing and comparison with in-situ observation. The results showed that the maximum root mean square errors of the temperature and salinity were less than 1 C and 0.4 compared to Argo profiles. Furthermore, the absolute deviation of temperature and salinity from the "Songhang" survey data is less than 0.25 °C and 0.27, respectively. Analysis discussed the vertical temperature and salinity structure and the relationship with the squid CPUE. The results indicated the suitable temperatures for squid at the 5m were 16 °C and 14 °C in August and October 2018. And the suitable temperatures decreased to 9-12 °C at the depth of 50m. The statistical relationship between temperature and squid CPUE conforms to an exponential function under a certain curvature. Additionally, it was observed that there are significant thermoclines at the fishing points. The greater the variation in thermocline intensity, the greater the randomness of the squid CPUE. When the thermocline intensity at the fishing points is around 0.4 C/m, the squid CPUE is relatively stable. Regardless of the month, higher CPCEs are located in low-salinity areas. This study provides a new approach for establishing long-time-series and quasi-real-time environmental data of fishing ground. Mixing processes in lakes are important in determining sedimentation zones and in setting the so‐called "wash zone", the area of lake bottom in contact with an oscillating thermocline during wind‐driven internal seiche events. The wash zone also aligns with a sharp change in sediment roughness and hardness. Taken together, these rapid changes in temperature and sediment indicate that the wash zone is a distinctive ecotone in stratified lakes. Depth stratified randomised netting was used to develop count‐based habitat use models for three common benthic fish species as a function of depth or temperature covariates. Using data from two lakes with quite different wash zone depths, we show the wash zone to describe fish habitat for two of three benthic fish species by utilising the top 50% of estimated fish abundance as an indicator of habitat use. White sucker (Catostomus commersoni) habitat use was within the boundaries of the wash zone. Lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) habitat was adjacent and within the wash zone. Longnose sucker (C. catostomus) habitat use was in the deep areas of lakes dominated by sediment focusing and did not overlap white sucker. Lake whitefish habitat use overlapped both catostomids, but peak abundance of both lake whitefish and white sucker overlapped pointing to potential interactions between these species. Smaller lakes have less vigorous mixing processes and a narrower wash zone, so with a decline in lake size the likely area of the wash zone as habitat for benthic feeding fish would become smaller. The behaviour of two benthic species, round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) and mottled sculpin (Cottus bairdii), were examined under natural relevant downwelling light during predatory attacks by Burbot (Lota lota) and Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus dolomieu). Population declines have been observed for mottled sculpin after round goby invaded the Laurentian Great Lakes, but no data exist on prey avoidance behaviours and success for either species. The activity levels of the prey species were measured in the presence and absence of predators. Predator–prey interactions were quantified for reaction, attack, capture and retention probabilities. In addition, flight initiation distance, turns per flee and a comparison between observed and optimal escape angles were used as escape metrics to examine differences in prey survival. Trials were run under downwelling irradiances calculated for Lake Superior that correlated with dark, civil twilight, and sunrise. The number of round goby movements decreased by 74% in the presence of predators while mottled sculpin movement declined by 95% compared to baselines established without predators. Round gobies were more successful at evading predation with 18.3% of mottled sculpins consumed compared to 8.5% of round gobies during a comparable number (n = 27) trials. Round gobies also fled closer to their theoretically calculated optimal angles than mottled sculpin. Greater variation in flight initiation distances at different light intensities, fleeing at optimum angles that avoid predation and a more erratic escape path led to increased escape success for round gobies. Greater success avoiding predators may be another compounding factor, combined with round goby aggression and competition, that has contributed to the success of the round goby invasion in the Laurentian Great Lakes. The mitre squid Uroteuthis chinensis is distributed widely in the Chinese coastal areas and contributes to the majority of the Chinese neritic squid fishery, especially in the South China Sea. However, little has been investigated about its life history traits, despite its commercial importance. In this study, using samples of U. chinensis collected through bottom trawlers from December 2019 to March 2021 in the northwestern South China Sea, biological traits including hatching date, growth pattern and dorsal mantle length at maturity of male individuals were explored by age determination based on statolith microstructure analysis. The results indicated that the U. chinensis showed a year-round spawning pattern with three main cohorts (spring, summer and autumn) that can be identified according to their hatching season. The range of the dorsal mantle length (DML) was 117–259 mm for females and 70–312 for males, and the body weight ranged from 55.1 to 480.5 g for females and from 19.3 to 560.2 g for males; the age ranges were estimated between 82 and 173 days for females and between 76 and 175 days for males. As for the length–weight relationship, males possessed a larger mantle length than females, while the body weight of females increased more compared to males at the same mantle length. The population recruits to the fishing ground, with individuals reaching sexual maturity at around 3 months, and the lifespan is less than 200 days. The growth model is well described by the exponential equation, which revealed that spring and autumn cohorts showed a higher growth rate than summer cohorts. As for male individuals, the smallest dorsal mantle length at maturity (DML50%) was recorded in the spring cohort (DML50% = 116 mm) compared with the summer (DML50% = 129 mm) and autumn cohorts (DML50% = 149 mm). Motivation: The metaweb is a dictionary of nodes and their potential interactions developed for a particular region, focusing on a particular type of ecosystem. Based on the local biodiversity information at different spatial and temporal scales, the regional metaweb can be easily decomposed into local webs. The generated local webs are useful for understanding spatiotemporal variations in ecological interactions in a particular region. In this study, an attempt was made to develop a trophic metaweb for freshwater ecosystems in South Korea, called the KF‐metaweb. The metaweb contains 23,074 interactions between 446 taxa collected from 730 studies. This metaweb can be used to understand the spatiotemporal variability of different local food webs and the effects of the environment on food web properties. Furthermore, this is the first metaweb developed for any Asian ecosystem that contains information about many interactions that are unavailable in any other existing database. In addition, this metaweb study enriches our global understanding of ecological interactions. In this study, cellular changes and biological indices in the liver tissue of the common sole, Solea solea (L. 1758), are investigated based on sex, size groups, and seasons. The specimens used in the study were obtained monthly between 2019 and 2020 from commercial trawlers and small scale–fishing operations in the fishing grounds of Izmir Bay, the Aegean Sea coast of Turkey. A total of 240 common sole fish (166 female, 66 male, 8 immature) were used in this study. In the obtained specimens, the male: female ratio was determined as 0.39:1 (χ2 = 33.19; p > 0.05), whereas the length–weight relationship was calculated as W = 0.009TL2.97 (R2 = 0.86) for females and W = 0.009TL3.27 (R2 = 0.91) for males. Four size groups (19–22, 23–26, 27–30, >30cm) were established in the study. Significant histological changes, such as macrovesicular steatosis degenerations, were observed in the liver tissue of the examined fish, especially in larger size groups. Females exhibited higher levels of condition and hepatosomatic index values compared with males, possibly because they are more susceptible to liver degeneration. During the summer months, liver degeneration is more striking due to hunger among common soles. Based on these results, 36.7% of the specimens caught from fishing grounds in Izmir Bay have normal liver tissues, whereas 11.3% have macrosteosis and 8.3% have a sinusoidal hemorrhage. Seagrass ecosystems are crucial for supporting biodiversity and serve as vital fishing grounds. Unfortunately, their cover is declining globally. In Kenya, seagrass cover is falling by ~ 1.6% annually but the causes are unknown. This study investigated the possible anthropogenic drivers of seagrass decline along the Kenyan coastline.Satellite and large‐scale geographic data on population growth, chlorophyll α trends, housing, and road density were used to explore their effects on seagrass cover loss along the whole coastline. Direct investigations were conducted into the effects of seine netting and basket trapping within seagrasses.There was an average loss of 1.9 km2 per 25 km2 seagrass cover between 2000 and 2016 and a weak but significant relationship between population growth and seagrass decline, with losses concentrated in areas with the highest population density. In contrast with studies elsewhere, there was no evidence implicating eutrophication, supporting the suggestion that declines are linked to direct anthropogenic impacts such as fishing. A field experiment showed that a single instance of seine netting caused a significant loss of seagrass cover of 8.3% within the area fished, while no significant changes were observed with basket traps.These findings support the evidence that declines in seagrass in Kenya and in other African countries are anthropogenic and are linked with fishing pressure and endorse existing efforts to restrict use of seine netting within seagrasses.Understanding the status, changes, and drivers of change in seagrass ecosystems in Africa is crucial for developing effective national and local seagrass conservation plans, and for compliance with international commitments on seagrass conservation. Small-scale fisheries exhibit unique, diverse, and varied characteristics in each region. These distinctive traits render small-scale fisheries challenging to regulate centrally. This research aims to compare the characteristics of land-based and island-based small-scale fisheries in Southeast Sulawesi Province. Data were collected through structured interviews involving 445 respondents from two distinct areas: North Konawe, representing land-based fisheries, and Konawe Islands, representing island-based fisheries. Both qualitative (questionnaire data) and quantitative analyses were conducted using R software. Proportion data were tested using the R ggstatsplot package, while word cloud analysis utilized the R wordcloud package. The analysis of fishing ground distribution hotspots was performed using QGIS software version 3.30. The research findings demonstrate differences across various aspects, including education levels, boat sizes, fishing frequency, monthly income, and types of captured fish. Furthermore, the study highlights that island-based small-scale fisheries hold a higher income potential compared to their landbased counterparts. These differing characteristics serve as essential considerations in developing policies that support sustainable management of small-scale fisheries based on the needs of local communities. AbstractThe short mackerel Rastrelliger brachysoma (Bleeker 1851) is an important fish in the Gulf of Thailand (GoT). The biology of this species has been intensively studied, but its genetic diversity is little known. The genetic diversity, population genetic structure, and demographic history of this species in the GoT were studied using complete mt control region sequences. The CR sequences of 455 mackerel samples collected from 23 localities at four fishing grounds revealed 333 haplotypes with haplotype diversity (h) per population, ranging between 0.8933 and 1.000, with an average of 0.9781. In turn, the nucleotide diversity (µ) ranged between 0.0119 ± 0.0060 and 0.0333 ± 0.0174, with an average of 0.0220 ± 0.00059.A haplotype network analysis showed that all sequences segregated into two subgroups named, clade I and clade II. Two clades were separated by 26 mutational steps. Each clade formed star-like clusters with many haplotypes derived from a common haplotype. Moreover, an analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) revealed no significant differences among the studied localities, suggesting the presence of a single population in the GoT. Pairwise differences between samples from different fishing regions also indicated no population structure. Both Tajima’s D and Fu’s FS statistics were highly significant for the two clades but nonsignificant for the entire population according to a mismatch distribution analysis. These results confirmed that both clades experienced demographic expansion. The estimated expansion times for clade I and clade II were 1,542.307 years (1.5423 ka BP) and 7,602.541 (7.6025 ka BP) years, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Whilst the importance of foundation species for biodiversity conservation has been largely acknowledged (e.g., coral and bivalve reefs, seagrass, kelp and rhodolith beds), the role of their associated species as secondary habitat engineers has just begun to be appreciated. Here, we evaluated whether secondary engineering of rhodolith beds by the sand tilefish Malacanthus plumieri influences the composition and β-diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates and reef fish assemblages. Our findings indicate that, by selecting, relocating, and rearranging rhodoliths into mounds, M. plumieri creates a distinctive habitat for macroinvertebrates and fishes. M. plumieri mounds increase fish abundance by 57% in rhodolith beds, with an 82% species turnover rate between mounds and non-mounded areas. In contrast, the macroinvertebrates in M. plumieri mounds are largely a subset of the species from non-mounded areas, with an 86% species nestedness rate. Despite decreasing the abundance of macroinvertebrates in the mounds by half, M. plumieri increases the heterogeneity and structural complexity of rhodolith beds, affecting the composition of associated fish assemblage at a larger spatial scale. Our results suggest that, by increasing the structural complexity of rhodolith beds and shaping their associated biodiversity, the abundance of M. plumieri mounds could be a useful proxy to define priority areas for conservation across the South Atlantic rhodolith beds, especially in the light of ongoing impacts related to offshore oil exploitation, overfishing and carbonate mining. Commercial fisheries along the US West Coast are important components of local and regional economies. They use various fishing gear, target a high diversity of species, and are highly spatially heterogeneous, making it challenging to generate a synoptic picture of fisheries activity in the region. Still, understanding the spatial and temporal dynamics of US West Coast fisheries is critical to meet the US legal mandate to manage fisheries sustainably and to better coordinate activities among a growing number of users of ocean space, including offshore renewable energy, aquaculture, shipping, and interactions with habitats and key non-fishery species such as seabirds and marine mammals. We analyzed vessel tracking data from Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) from 2010 to 2017 to generate high-resolution spatio-temporal estimates of contemporary fishing effort across a wide range of commercial fisheries along the entire US West Coast. We identified over 247,000 fishing trips across the entire VMS data, covering over 25 different fisheries. We validated the spatial accuracy of our analyses using independent estimates of spatial groundfish fisheries effort generated through the NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service Observer Program. Additionally, for commercial groundfish fisheries operating in federal waters in California, we combined the VMS data with landings and ex-vessel value data from California commercial fisheries landings receipts to generate highly resolved estimates of landings and ex-vessel value, matching over 38,000 fish tickets with VMS data that included 87% of the landings and 76% of the ex-vessel value for groundfish. We highlight fisheries-specific and spatially-resolved patterns of effort, landings, and ex-vessel value, a bimodal distribution of fishing effort with respect to depth, and variable and generally declining effort over eight years. The information generated by our study can help inform future sustainable spatial fisheries management and other activities in the marine environment including offshore renewable energy planning. Climate change is threatening marine ecosystems on a global scale but particularly so in the Arctic. As a result of warming, species are shifting their distributions, altering marine communities and predator-prey interactions. This is known as the Atlantification of the Arctic. Warming may favor short-lived, opportunistic species such as cephalopods, marine mollusks that previously have been hypothesized to be winners in an ocean of change. To detect temporal regional trends in biodiversity, long-term annual surveys in hotspots of climate change are an unparalleled source of data. Here, we use 18 years of annual bottom trawl data (2005-2022) to analyse cephalopods in the western Barents Sea. More specifically, our research goals are to assess temporal trends in cephalopod fauna composition, abundance and biomass, and to relate these trends to climate change in the western Barents Sea. Main changes in cephalopod diversity and distribution occurred in mid-2000s and early 2010s, which corresponds with a period of warming in the Arctic since the late 1990s/early 2000s. Repeated increased occurrence of the boreal-subtropical cephalopods was recorded from 2005-2013 to 2014-2022. Moreover, the abundance of cephalopods in the area (in general and for most taxa) increased from 2005-2013 to 2014-2022. These observations suggest that the cephalopod community of the Barents Sea is subjected to Atlantification since the 2005-2013 period. This corresponds with previously reported evidence of the Atlantification in fishes and benthic invertebrates in the Barents Sea and benthic invertebrates. 'Typical' Arctic cephalopod species such as Bathypolypus spp., Gonatus fabricii and Rossia spp., however, are still much more abundant in the western Barents Sea compared to the deep-sea and the boreal-subtropical species. We also found indirect indications for body-size reduction in Bathypolypus spp. from 2005-2013 to 2014-2022. To understand the spatial temporal distribution characteristics of Illex argentinus caught by trawl fishing vessels in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean and their relationship with key marine environmental factors, this study analyzed the temporal and spatial changes in the fishing ground center of trawl vessels at the ten-day scale from December 2019 to May 2022, combining Chinese trawl fishing log data marine environmental data with satellite remote sensing marine environmental data. Utilizing the Maxent model, ten-day intervals were used as the temporal scale, and ten marine environmental factors, including sea surface temperature, sea surface height, sea surface salinity, chlorophyll concentration, temperature at 50 m and 100 m depth, and the meridional and zonal velocities of ocean currents were quantitatively analyzed to explore the correlation between the spatial distribution of catch and environmental factors. The study reveals that the trawl fishing grounds for Illex argentinus are divided into southern and northern grounds. The southern grounds first appear near 45°20′ S in December, gradually moving southeastward in February and March. The northern grounds do not appear until April, near 42° S in the high seas. On the ten-day time scale, the central fishing grounds of Illex argentinus show significant spatial variability but minor interannual differences. The Maxent model results indicate that sea surface temperature and chlorophyll a concentration are the key environmental factors influencing the spatial and temporal variability of the high seas trawl fishing grounds for most of the time, with high environmental contribution rates during the fishing season. While the range of suitable habitats with an HSI > 0.6 identified by the Maxent model varies significantly between years, a pattern is observed where the range expands at the start and end of the fishing season and contracts during the peak fishing season. This suggests that a more concentrated range of suitable habitats is conducive to accurate predictions of trawl fishing grounds, enabling efficient fishing operations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pholis fangi is a small, bottom-dwelling fish species endemic to the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea in China. While previous research has focused on its population biology and molecular structure, little is known about the early developmental stages of this species. In this study, larval and juvenile P. fangi specimens were collected from the Sheyang Sea Area, Jiangsu Province, in 2017. Morphological features were examined using microscopy, and DNA barcoding was conducted to confirm species identification. The research documented detailed changes in yolk sac, fin development, and melanophore distribution patterns across larval and juvenile stages of P. fangi. Comparative analysis with other Pholis species revealed that melanophore distribution is a key distinguishing characteristic, allowing effective differentiation between larval and juvenile stages, as well as between Pholis species. This study provides valuable insights into the early life history of P. fangi, contributing to a better understanding of the genus Pholis. The findings demonstrate the utility of combining traditional morphological observation and molecular techniques for accurate species identification, particularly during the critical larval and juvenile developmental phases. Anthropogenic stressors such as agriculture and urbanization can increase river turbidity, which can negatively impact fish gill morphology and growth due to reduced oxygen in the benthic environment. We assessed the gill morphology, field metabolic rate (FMR), and two hypoxia tolerance metrics (oxygen partial pressure at loss of equilibrium, PO2 at LOE, and critical oxygen tension, Pcrit) of eastern sand darter (Ammocrypta pellucida), a small benthic fish listed as threatened under the Species at Risk Act in Canada, from rivers in southern Ontario. Field trials were conducted streamside in the Grand River (August 2019; mean NTU 8) and in the comparatively more turbid Thames River (August 2020; mean NTU 94) to test the effect of turbidity on each physiological endpoint. Gills were collected from incidental mortalities and museum specimens, and were assessed using hematoxylin and eosin and immunofluorescent staining. The between‐river comparison indicated that turbidity significantly increased interlamellar space and filament width but had no significant influence on other gill morphometrics or FMR. Turbidity significantly increased PO2 at LOE (i.e., fish had a lower hypoxia tolerance) but did not significantly impact Pcrit. Therefore, although turbidity influences hypoxia tolerance through LOE, turbidity levels were not sufficiently high in the study rivers to contribute to measurable changes in gill morphology or metabolism in the wild. Determining whether changes in gill morphology or metabolism occur under higherturbidity levels would help resolve the ecological importance of turbidity on species physiology in urban and agricultural ecosystems. This study investigates the effect of large woody debris (LWD) on the abundance of juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar, L.) and anadromous brown trout (Salmo trutta, L.) in semi‐alluvial side channels of the river Aurlandselva (Norway) using point electrofishing and microhabitat mapping. Not the presence of LWD, but stream bed shelter availability and the distance to spawning grounds affected the fish abundance (fish/point), independent of other habitat components. LWD showed only an effect on fish abundance when in interaction with other habitat components. This discrepancy can be explained by the availability of cavities in the shelter‐rich coarse substrate which provide sufficient cover and territory for juvenile fish at the given carrying capacity of river Aurlandselva. Whilst LWD may be most effective to provide shelter in lowland streams (bed slope <0.005), maintaining or restoring shelter‐rich coarse substrates should be considered a key priority in steeper salmonid rivers and associated semi‐fluvial streams. The wave of new global conservation targets, the conclusion of the High Seas Treaty negotiations, and the expansion of extractive use into the deep sea call for a paradigm shift in ocean conservation. The current reductionist 2D representation of the ocean to set targets and measure impacts will fail at achieving effective biodiversity conservation. Here, we develop a framework that overlays depth realms onto marine ecoregions to conduct the first three-dimensional spatial analysis of global marine conservation achievements and fisheries footprint. Our novel approach reveals conservation gaps of mesophotic, rariphotic, and abyssal depths and an underrepresentation of high protection levels across all depths. In contrast, the 3D footprint of fisheries covers all depths, with benthic fishing occurring down to the lower bathyal and mesopelagic fishing peaking in areas overlying abyssal depths. Additionally, conservation efforts are biased towards areas where the lowest fishing pressures occur, compromising the effectiveness of the marine conservation network. These spatial mismatches emphasize the need to shift towards 3D thinking to achieve ocean sustainability. The first three-dimensional spatial analysis of global marine conservation achievements and fisheries footprint reveals 3D conservation gaps and an underrepresentation of high protection levels across all depths while the 3D footprint of fisheries covers all depths. Seagrass habitats play a major role in fisheries productivity through nursery functions and feeding grounds for diverse fish species. However, little is known about the seasonal distribution of fish larvae at large spatial scales in coastal East Africa. We investigated drivers of the seasonal fish larvae abundance and composition in seagrass habitats in Kenya and Tanzania. We found a high diversity of fish larvae (54 families) inhabiting seagrass habitats that differed between sites and seasons. Fish larvae abundance were highest in Kenya, particularly during the northeast monsoon season. Overall, total larval abundances per site were low, reaching less than 190 individuals/100 m3 in Kenya and less than 40 individuals/100 m3 in Tanzania, likely related to the low productivity and strong hydrodynamic processes in this region. Our data suggests that most of the fish spawn year-round in these tropical waters as we did not find strong seasonal patterns. All sites had a high relative abundance of larvae from demersal spawning fishes, indicating that many fish species move to coastal sites for spawning. Primary productivity and dissolved oxygen, driven by hydrodynamics conditions are positively related to fish larvae productivity both in Kenya and Tanzania. These findings indicate that the occurrence of both resident and transient fish larvae in seagrass meadows is driven by strong hydrodynamic and tidal processes that transport fish larvae across adjacent habitats. The round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) is an invasive benthic fish first introduced to the Laurentian Great Lakes in 1990 that has negatively impacted native fishes through increased competition for food and habitat, aggressive interactions, and egg predation. While complete eradication of the round goby is currently not possible, intensive trapping in designated areas during spawning seasons could potentially protect critical native fish spawning habitats. Baited minnow traps were spaced 10 meters apart in shallow water along a 100-meter stretch of shoreline within the Duluth-Superior Harbor during the round goby breeding period (June to October) with captured round gobies removed from interior traps (N = 10) every 48 hours. These traps were bracketed by two pairs of reference traps deployed weekly for 48 hours, from which round gobies were also tagged and released. The number of round gobies captured in the interior traps declined by 67% compared to reference traps over the course of the study, with extended periods of no captures. The tagged round gobies showed high site affinity, with 82.8% of tagged fish recaptured at the previous release site. The results indicate that even at open water sites, which allow natural migration of round gobies into the area, extensive trapping could reduce local population numbers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The regulations imposing sanctions for violations of provisions regarding the conformity of fishing grounds and areas for catching fish have not been fully complied with by fishing vessels based at the Sibolga Archypelago Fishing Port. The number of violations committed by purse seine vessels, categorized by size, is as follows: 34 violations for vessels sized 30-100 GT and 23 violations for vessels sized 100-200 GT. The purpose of this research is to analyze the status and conformity of purse seine fishing grounds at PPN Sibolga with fisheries management regulations. This research was conducted at the Sibolga Archypelago Fishing Port from January to March 2024. The research is quantitative in nature, using a descriptive method. Respondents are skippers and boat masters of purse seine vessels. Sample determination in the research was done through incidental sampling. Data analysis was conducted using scoring, weighting, and comparison. The results indicate that the potential status and conformity of Fishing Ground are as follows: Fishing grounds within <12 miles for small pelagic purse seine fishermen with vessel sizes of 30-100 GT are classified as potential but not in conformity with Ministerial Regulation No. 58 of 2020. Meanwhile, potential FGAs for small pelagic purse seine fishermen targeting skipjack tuna with vessel sizes of 30-100 GT and for large pelagic purse seine fishermen targeting skipjack tuna with vessel sizes of 100-300 GT are in conformity with Ministerial Regulation No. 58 of 2020. Aging is associated with a wide range of physiological and behavioral changes in many species. Zebrafish, like humans, rodents, and birds, exhibits gradual senescence, and thus may be a useful model organism for identifying evolutionarily conserved mechanisms related to aging. Here, we compared behavior in the novel tank test of young (6-month-old) and middle aged (12-month-old) zebrafish from two strains (TL and TU) and both sexes. We find that this modest age difference results in a reduction in locomotor activity in male fish. We also found that background strain modulated the effects of age on predator avoidance behaviors related to anxiety: older female TL fish increased bottom dwelling whereas older male TU fish decreased thigmotaxis. Although there were no consistent effects of age on either short-term (within session) or long-term (next day) habituation to the novel tank, strain affected the habituation response. TL fish tended to increase their distance from the bottom of the tank whereas TU fish had no changes in bottom distance but instead tended to increase thigmotaxis. Our findings support the use of zebrafish for the study of how age affects locomotion and how genetics interacts with age and sex to alter exploratory and emotional behaviors in response to novelty. In many tropical nations, coastal communities seek to manage their sea cucumber fisheries by establishing locally managed marine areas on their traditional fishing grounds. These managed areas can protect spawning stocks, however the extent to which they help to replenish nearby sea cucumber fisheries is debated, as nothing is known about the scales at which sea cucumber larvae disperse. In this study, we used genetic parentage analyses and statistical modelling to provide the first empirical measure of larval dispersal patterns for a sea cucumber species. We analysed tissue samples from 765 adult and 827 juvenile sandfish (Holothuria scabra) collected from five traditional fishing grounds of the Titan tribe, from Manus Province, Papua New Guinea. All adults were sampled from the Pere fishing grounds (the larval source area), with juveniles sampled from the Pere, Mbunai, Tawi, Timonai and Mbuke fishing grounds. Parentage analysis identified 15 juveniles that were the offspring of parents sampled from Pere fishing grounds, with six of these juveniles located in the same fishing grounds as their parents. The best-fit larval dispersal kernel predicted that the average H. scabra larvae travelled 15 km from its spawning location, with 50% of larvae settling within 6.7 km of their parents and 95% of larvae settling within 59 km of their parents. These results suggest that the Titan tribes' desire to protect their H. scabra spawning stocks by establishing a network of locally managed marine areas across 65 km of continuous coastline is a culturally appropriate strategy, which has merit from both an ecological and fisheries standpoint. This study evaluated the aquatic ecosystem health status of the Chengdu Section of Tuojiang River Basin and explored an effective index evaluation method to comprehensive measure ecological health of the river section. We investigated the physical, chemical and biological factors such as hydrology, water quality, habitat, benthic invertebrates and fishes, and conducted a comparative analysis using the WEQIriver comprehensive index method and the RHI comprehensive index method. The WEQIriver comprehensive index method based on water quality, habitat and benthic invertebrates showed that the Chengdu section was in good condition. The results of RHI comprehensive index method based on the natural condition of the riverbank, degree of illegal exploitation and utilization of the riverbank, degree of ecological flow, degree of water pollution, self-purification capacity of the water, fish retention index and public satisfaction showed that the whole basin was in a sub-health state. The results of the two methods showed that the environmental condition of the mainstream and upstream tributaries was better than the downstream tributaries. The environmental conditions of some sites were quite different because they were influenced by the different focuses of the two methods. WEQIriver comprehensive index lays more emphasis on the state of water ecosystems itself, while RHI comprehensive index lays more emphasis on the interference level of human activities to water ecosystems. The radionuclide concentration of man-made radionuclides on non-human biota in freshwater ecosystems has been extensively studied in environments affected by the Chernobyl and Fukushima accidents, in both humid continental and subtropical climates, respectively. However, there are very few studies that assess the long-term effects of operating nuclear facilities in Mediterranean environments. In the present study, a temporal analysis of the impact on carp, cattail, and bulrushes in the cooling pond of the currently operating Almaraz nuclear power plant was investigated for the period 2000–2020. The results do not show a general trend in man-made radionuclide concentrations. Instead, depending on their availability and the type of organism, trends decrease over time. This is also reflected in the effective half-lives obtained, which are lower than the physical half-life for some radionuclides. Transfer coefficients for the main man-made radionuclides detected were obtained, and it was found that these were significantly lower than the typical ranges found for benthic fish and vascular plants in freshwater ecosystems. Finally, the internal and external doses received by the carp have been evaluated using ERICA tool, and it has been observed that the main contribution to the total dose is due to the internal dose (0.65–7.04) × 10−4 µGy/h. Effective and sustainable management of small-scale fisheries (SSF) is challenging. We describe a novel approach to identify important fishing grounds for SSF, by implementing a habitat modelling approach, using environmental predictors and Automatic Identification System (AIS)-B data coupled with logbook and First Sales Notes data, within the SE Bay of Biscay. Fishing activity patterns and catches of longliners and netters are used to determine the main environmental characteristics of the fishing grounds, and a habitat modelling approach is implemented to predict the zones that fulfil similar environmental characteristics across a larger geographical extent. Generalized additive mixed models (GAMMs) were built for 24 fish species, and to identify other zones that fulfil similar characteristics and, thus, could be considered relevant for the species targeted by each gear type. Most of the models showed a good prediction capacity. The models included between one and four predictor variables. 'Depth of mixing layer' and 'benthic rocky habitat' were the variables included more frequently for fish species captured by netter's fleet. For longliners, the 'seafloor slope' and 'benthic rocky habitat' were the two most important variables. This study examines the effect of common bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus on the purse-seine fishery for small pelagic fishes in the Mediterranean Sea and the economic consequences thereof. The investigation focused on the fleet registered at the port of Al Hoceima, Morocco, and used information collected from on-board observations and a semi-structured questionnaire with fishermen and ship-owners. A total of 121 dolphins were captured as bycatch during 48 fishing trips, with a mortality rate of 0.23 dolphins per fishing trip. In terms of damage to the fishing gear, the number of observed holes varied between 28 and 230 per net per incident. Though some tears were large, most were <35 cm in height. The cost of repairing the holes in the nets caused by these interactions was estimated at US$179.52 per mending event. The level of interaction between common bottlenose dolphins and the purse-seine fishery targeting small pelagic fishes is a challenge for both fishery management and dolphin conservation. Recent attempts to estimate the biomass of chokka squid Loligo reynaudii on the southeast coast of South Africa by acoustic surveys of the inshore jig-fishing area are described. Pilot surveys of aggregations, covering part of the fishing grounds, were conducted in 2019 and 2020, followed by a multiphase survey of the entire grounds within the 50-m depth contour by two vessels in 2021. Biomass estimates were made using previous in situ and ex situ estimates of the target strength of L. reynaudii at 38 kHz, and our knowledge of the physical characteristics of spawning aggregations from acoustic studies over the past two decades. Biomass estimates from the 2021 survey ranged from 343 tonnes (coefficient of variation [CV] 47%) for targets conclusively identified as squid, to 2 365 tonnes (CV 9%) if all targets that could possibly have been squid were included. An estimate of 635 tonnes (CV 20%) is proposed as the most reasonable from the survey, although its worth as an absolute estimate is questionable mainly because of identification and target-strength uncertainties. We conclude that a series of wide-area acoustic estimates could provide an additional index of relative abundance for fitting in the current squid assessment model. This would be useful in managing the jig fishery and for improving our understanding of changes in chokka squid abundance and distribution in response to changes in the environment. Positive interactions are underrepresented in marine ecology but have a substantial impact on biodiversity and ecosystem stability. Here, we showcase a previously undescribed commensal relationship between two temperate rocky reef fishes in sandy bottom habitats: the rock wrasse (Halichoeres semicinctus) and round stingray (Urobatis halleri). Using snorkel surveys in Big Fisherman's Cove on Santa Catalina Island, we showed that rock wrasse abundances were positively associated with the presence of round stingrays and that round stingrays significantly altered rock wrasse behavior. Specifically, rock wrasse within a 1 m radius of a feeding round stingray spent approximately 40% and 35% more time feeding compared to rock wrasse in proximity of a resting round stingray or a sandy bottom control, respectively. The positive effect of feeding round stingrays on rock wrasse feeding behavior is in response to stingrays disturbing sand as they eat, uncovering small invertebrates for the wrasses to prey on. Genetic differentiation in aquatic systems is often driven by geographic distance (isolation by distance) due to the linear and hierarchical distribution of populations, but habitat fragmentation often exacerbates this effect by decreasing population connectivity, leading to isolation by resistance. Stronghold populations of the Kentucky Arrow Darter (Etheostoma spilotum) in the South Fork Kentucky River system within the Daniel Boone National Forest of eastern Kentucky, USA have a high population structure not explained by distance alone. Higher than expected levels of genetic differentiation among proximate populations were hypothesized to be driven by land‐use change, but this was not previously tested. Here we use a riverscape genetics approach to test for the effects of natural landscape features including slope, elevation and stream size, and anthropogenically altered habitat features, including specific conductance (conductivity), culverts and forest cover, on population connectivity and genetic diversity of E. spilotum. We found isolation of populations among all tributary systems and a strong, positive relationship between genetic and geographic distances as expected. However, high conductivity levels due to surface coal mining best explain the population structure observed. We also found signatures of low genetic diversity overall and indicators that culverts may limit upstream movements of E. spilotum. This study provides a novel fine‐scale view of the effects of instream and landscape features on connectivity among, and genetic diversity within populations of an imperilled, small‐bodied, benthic fish. This study investigates the presence and concentrations of ten specific heavy metals in the muscle tissues and gonads of three commercially important marine fish species: Garfish (Belone belone), European barracuda (Sphyraena sphyraena), and Anglerfish (Lophius piscatorius) collected from the Aegean Sea in Türkiye. The results indicate variations in metal accumulation, both between genders and among species. The fish species tend to accumulate higher levels of heavy metals in their gonads than in muscle tissues (p<0.05). While Cr, Cd, and Pb were not detected, Zn, Cu, and Fe are the predominant metals in muscle tissues due to their essential biological roles. However, within toxic elements, Hg was predominant, and L. piscatorius , a benthic fish, exceeded its recommended safety limits. A health risk assessment suggests that except for L. piscatorius , consuming these fish species from the Aegean Sea is generally safe, with estimated weekly intake (EWI) values below permissible limits. Total Hazard Quotient (THQ) values for most metals are below 1, indicating no significant non-carcinogenic health risks for consumers. This study emphasizes the critical need for regularly monitoring heavy metal levels in marine fish from the Aegean Sea, Turkiye. While overall safety in consuming these fish is highlighted, exceptions exist, notably concerning Hg levels in L. piscatorius. Therefore, persistent monitoring of heavy metal concentrations, especially in L. piscatorius , is advised to ensure ongoing safety and mitigate potential risks of metal accumulation. When benthic fish engage in predation, they often swim near the riverbank or close to hard rocks, where they are subjected to the combined effects of side and benthic walls. This study focuses on the brown trout and employs a three-dimensional numerical model to simulate the process of brown trout accelerating from a stationary state to a cruising state under the influence of wall effects. A self-developed subroutine algorithm is applied to solve the various hydrodynamic parameters of brown trout swimming. By varying the distance between the fish's center of gravity and the wall, this study explores the self-propelled performance and efficiency of fish swimming affected by the sidewall as well as the combined influence of the side and benthic walls. This study also reveals the hydrodynamic mechanism of wall effects that impact the performance of fish swimming in the body/caudal fin (BCF) mode. The results demonstrate that when the distance is less than 0.5 times the body length of the fish, swimming near the sidewall can enhance speed and thrust, but the swimming efficiency will reduce. Closer proximity to the benthic wall leads to increased power consumption and decreased efficiency, which is disadvantageous for fish swimming. The findings of this study reveal the unstable wall effects experienced by fish and offer insights for designing biomimetic underwater vehicles that leverage wall effects as well as for creating habitats that support fish swimming in the BCF mode. The present research quantitatively compared the fish composition among two methods for non-cryptic benthic fish species and one method for cryptobenthic fish species for the first time for the Mediterranean temperate reef fish assemblage. A visual census of fishes was performed within a cylinder of 4 m radius and within a cylinder of 2 m radius, while the cryptobenthic fishes were collected using a square of 1 m2 with anesthetic. The data and material were collected at fifty sampling points. The visual census methods together recorded 31 species, and the square with anesthetic method recorded 18 species. The quantitative comparison of methods of visual census and cryptobenthic fish collecting showed significantly different species richness, total fish abundance, and fish assemblage structure among methods. The applied methods were highly complementary. The cylinder of 2 m radius is well suited for epibenthic fishes and the cylinder of 4 m radius is reliable for hyperbenthic and benthopelagic fishes. Therefore, each of the methods well covered one of three components of ichthyobenthos (hyperbenthic, epibenthic, and cryptobenthic fishes), and all three methods together provided a far more complete assessment of fish species composition than any individual census method for the Mediterranean littoral benthic fishes. Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Boat Detection (VBD) data have been widely used to study the patterns of fishing grounds and their linking to fishery targets, particularly species mainly caught by jiggers. In line with most species in the Ommastrephidae family, the population of Todarodes pacificus is made up of various splinter cohorts concerning the timing and location of hatching. Therefore, the satellite‐recorded fishing grounds consist of groups with complex age structures and different migration directions within cohorts. This study examined the age composition of harvestable stocks (age spectrum) of T. pacificus in the Japan Sea based on an early life history individual‐based model of T. pacificus and VBD data. Using the age spectrum, we analysed the relationship between fishery effort and the age of the target group. It was found that jiggers most prefer individuals around 310 ± 20 days. Furthermore, the correlation between ambient water temperature and fishing effort revealed that T. pacificus migrated to colder waters, reaching the coldest waters at 250 ± 7.5 days before moving back towards warmer waters. We discussed a possible way to use the age‐temperature relationship to analyse the flow of VBD distributions to record the movements related to the migration of the fishing target. The results show migration‐like trajectories, which are initially parallel to the isotherm, gradually deflect towards lower temperature sides over several months, sharply turn for about a month and then move back with a slight angle to the isotherms. A large adult (138 mm head length) of the grenadier genus Coryphaenoides is described. It is identified as C. affinis hitherto known only from two juvenile type specimens collected by HMS Challenger off Uruguay in 1876. The diagnosis of the species is revised to include the discovery of considerable ontogenetic changes in squamation. Spinulation on the body scales are reduced or lost with size, while the armament of the head scales become amplified. The larger of the syntype specimens is designated as the lectotype. All three known specimens of C. affinis were collected in the southwestern Atlantic at depths between 3500 and 4000 m.
