Search

Radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) with their jets pointed close to our line of sight constitute the majority of extragalactic $\gamma$-ray sources and significantly contribute to the radiation observed in the even higher energy regime. The upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is expected to detect fainter TeV objects, leading to an anticipated increase in the proportion of non-blazar extragalactic high-energy sources. Here we present the results of our dual-frequency (1.7 and 5~GHz) European VLBI Network (EVN) and enhanced Multi Element Remotely Linked Interferometer Network (e-MERLIN) observations of two faint radio sources from the list of TeV candidate sources. They do not show signs of nuclear activity in their optical spectra, but they were hypothesized to contain faint AGN that is outshone by the host galaxy. We used the mas-scale resolution radio data to try to pinpoint the location of the compact radio emitting feature, determine its spectral index, radio power, brightness temperature and radio-X-ray luminosity ratio and thus identify the origin of the radio emission. The radio source J0028+0035 is a recently discovered double--double radio galaxy at redshift z=0.398. Its relic outer lobes are separated by about 3' in the sky, corresponding to ~1 Mpc projected linear size. Inside this large-scale structure, the inner pair of collinear lobes span about 100 kpc. In the arcsec-resolution radio images of J0028+0035, there is a central radio feature that offers the intriguing possibility of being resolved into a pc-scale, third pair of innermost lobes. This would make this radio galaxy a rare triple-double source where traces of three distinct episodes of radio activity could be observed. To reveal the compact radio structure of the central component, we conducted observation with the European Very Long Baseline Interferometer Network and the enhanced Multi Element Remotely Linked Interferometer Network. Our 1.66 GHz image with high (~5 milliarcsec) resolution shows a compact central radio core with no indication of a third, innermost double feature. The observation performed in multi-phase-centre mode also revealed that the physically unrelated but in projection closely separated background source 5BZU J0028+0035 has a single weak, somewhat resolved radio feature, at odds with its blazar classification., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Symmetry

To investigate the radio properties of the recently found high-redshift population, we collected a sample of $919$ little red dots (LRDs) from the literature. By cross-matching their coordinates with the radio catalogues based on the first- and second-epoch observations of the Very Large Array Sky Survey (VLASS) and the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-centimeters (FIRST) survey, we found no radio counterparts coinciding with any of the LRDs. To uncover possible sub-mJy level weak radio emission, we performed mean and median image stacking analyses of empty-field 'Quick Look' VLASS and FIRST image cutouts centred on the LRD positions. We found no radio emission above $3\sigma$ noise levels ($\sim11$ and $\sim18~\mu$Jy~beam$^{-1}$ for the VLASS and FIRST maps, respectively) in either of the stacked images for the LRD sample, while the noise levels of the single-epoch images are comparable to those found earlier in the stacking of high-redshift radio-quiet active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The existence of accreting supermassive black holes up to billions of solar masses at early cosmological epochs (in the context of this work, redshifts z>=6) requires very fast growth rates which is challenging to explain. The presence of a relativistic jet can be a direct indication of activity and accretion status in active galactic nuclei (AGN), constraining the radiative properties of these extreme objects. However, known jetted AGN beyond z~6 are still very rare. The radio-emitting AGN J2331+1129 has recently been claimed as a candidate BL Lac object at redshift z=6.57, based on its synchrotron-dominated emission spectrum and the lack of ultraviolet/optical emission lines. It is a promising candidate for the highest-redshift blazar known to date. The aim of the observations described here was to support or refute the blazar classification of this peculiar source. We performed high-resolution radio interferometric imaging observations of J2331+1129 using the Very Long Baseline Array at 1.6 and 4.9 GHz in 2022 Feb. The images revealed a compact but slightly resolved, flat-spectrum core feature at both frequencies, indicating that the total radio emission is produced by a compact jet and originates from within a central 10-pc scale region. While these are consistent with the radio properties of a BL Lac object, the inferred brightness temperatures are at least an order of magnitude lower than expected from a Doppler-boosted radio jet, leaving the high-redshift BL Lac identification still an open question., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics as a Letter to the Editor

In a previous work, we have identified the spin of the dominant black hole of a binary from its jet properties. Analysing Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of the quasar S5~1928+738, taken at $15$-GHz during $43$ epochs between $1995.96$ and $2013.06$, we showed that the inclination angle variation of the inner ($<2$~mas) jet symmetry axis naturally decomposes into a periodic and a monotonic contribution. The former emerges due to the Keplerian orbital evolution, while the latter is interpreted as the signature of the spin-orbit precession of the jet emitting black hole. In this paper, we revisit the analysis of the quasar S5~1928+738 by including new $15$-GHz VLBA observations extending over $29$ additional epochs, between $2013.34$ and $2020.89$. The extended data set confirms our previous findings which are further supported by the flux density variation of the jet. By applying an enhanced jet precession model that can handle arbitrary spin orientations $\kappa$ with respect to the orbital angular momentum of a binary supermassive black hole system, we estimate the binary mass ratio as $\nu=0.21\pm0.04$ for $\kappa=0$ (i.e. when the spin direction is perpendicular to the orbital plane) and as $\nu=0.32\pm0.07$ for $\kappa=\pi/2$ (i.e. when the spin lies in the orbital plane). We estimate more precisely the spin precession velocity, halving its uncertainty from $(-0.05\pm0.02)^\circ\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$ to $(-0.04\pm0.01)^\circ\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, 7 tables. PSO J334.2028+1.4075 (PSO J334) is a luminous quasar located at redshift z=2.06. The source gained attention when periodic flux density variations were discovered in its optical light curve. These variations were initially interpreted as the variability due to the orbital motion of a supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) residing in a single circumbinary accretion disk. However, subsequent multiwavelength observations provided evidence against the binary hypothesis as no optical periodicity was found on extended time baselines. On the other hand, detailed radio analysis with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) revealed a lobe-dominated quasar at kpc scales, and possibly a precessing jet, which could retain PSO J334 as a binary SMBH candidate. We aim to study both the large- and small-scale radio structures in PSO J334 to provide additional evidence for or against the binary scenario. We observed the source at 1.7 GHz with the European Very Long Baseline Interferometry Network (EVN), and at 1.5 and 6.2 GHz with the VLA, at frequencies that complement the previous radio interferometric study. Our images reveal a single component at parsec scales slightly resolved in the southeast-northwest direction and a lobe-dominated quasar at kiloparsec scales with a complex structure. The source morphology and polarization in our VLA maps suggest that the jet is interacting with dense clumps of the ambient medium. While we also observe a misalignment between the inner jet and the outer lobes, we suggest that this is due to the restarted nature of the radio jet activity and the possible presence of a warped accretion disk rather than due to the perturbing effects of a companion SMBH. Our analysis suggests that PSO J334 is most likely a jetted AGN with a single SMBH, and there is no clear evidence of a binary SMBH system in its central engine.

X-ray binaries are known to show state transitions related to accretion rate changes which are often accompanied with dramatic changes in the jet emission. However, it is not clear whether this characteristics of stellar-mass black hole systems can be scaled up to the accretion disk of active galactic nuclei. The Seyfert 1 galaxy, KUG 1141+371 has been showing a steadily increasing X-ray flux since 2007, and exhibited variability behaviour similar to the state transitions observed in X-ray binaries. It was hypothesised to undergo a rapid boost of mass accretion. If the X-ray binary analogy holds then the appearance of jet emission can also be expected in KUG 1141+371. While the source was not detected in the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-centimeters in 1994, it appears in the VLA Sky Survey in 2019 and at 22 GHz in a VLA observation in 2018 at mJy flux density level. Our VLBI observations revealed a compact, flat-spectrum radio feature. The powerful high-redshift quasar J2102+6015 (at z=4.575) may provide useful information for studying supermassive black hole growth, galaxy evolution and feedback in the early Universe. The source has so far been imaged with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) at 2/8 GHz (S/X) bands only, showing complex compact structure. Its total radio spectrum peaks at ~6 GHz in the rest frame. There is no sign of Doppler-boosted jet emission, and the separation of the two major features in its east-west oriented structure spanning ~10 milliarcsec does not change significantly on a timescale longer than a decade. However, VLBI astrometric monitoring observations suggest quasi-periodic (~3 yr) variation in its absolute position. J2102+6015 is presumably a young radio source with jets misaligned with respect to the line of sight. Active galactic nuclei (AGN) have been observed as far as redshift z~7. They are crucial in investigating the early Universe as well as the growth of supermassive black holes at their centres. Radio-loud AGN with their jets seen at a small viewing angle are called blazars and show relativistic boosting of their emission. Thus, their apparently brighter jets are easier to detect in the high-redshift Universe. DES J014132.4-542749.9 is a radio-luminous but X-ray weak blazar candidate at z = 5. We conducted high-resolution radio interferometric observations of this source with the Australian Long Baseline Array at 1.7 and 8.5 GHz. A single, compact radio emitting feature was detected at both frequencies with a flat radio spectrum. We derived the milliarcsecond-level accurate position of the object. The frequency dependence of its brightness temperature is similar to that of blazar sources observed at lower redshifts. Based on our observations, we can confirm its blazar nature. We compared its radio properties with those of two other similarly X-ray-weak and radio-bright AGN, and found that they show very different relativistic boosting characteristics., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in PASA

The nature of jets in active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the early Universe and their feedback to the host galaxy remain a highly topical question. Observations of the radio structure of high-redshift AGNs enabled by very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) provide indispensable input into studies of their properties and role in the galaxies' evolution. Up to now, only five AGNs at redshift $z > 6$ have been studied with the VLBI technique. VIKJ2318-3113 is a recently discovered quasar at z = 6.44 that has not been imaged with VLBI before the current work. Here we present the first VLBI imaging results of this high-redshift quasar, with the aim of corroborating its high-resolution appearance with the physical model of the object. We carried out VLBI phase-referencing observations of VIKJ2318-3113 using the Very Long Baseline Array at two frequencies, 1.6 and 4.7 GHz, and obtained the first view at the radio structure on the milliarcsecond scale. The source was clearly detected at 1.6 GHz. We found that almost all of its radio emission comes from the pc-scale core region. Our dual-frequency observations constrain the spectral index and brightness temperature of the radio core. We present the project of a VLBI study of the 22 GHz H$_2$O maser in a prototypical low-mass protostellar system IRAS 16293-2422. The observation was conducted to characterise the cause of the newly discovered enhanced maser activity in the source and to study the source's ejection behaviour as traced by maser emission. Single-dish monitoring and analysis of archival data indicate that the activity of the H$_2$O maser in IRAS 16293-2422 has a cyclic character and traces episodic ejection events in the source. A new maser flare was recently discovered in a spectral feature that has never shown such a significant increase in flux density before. High-redshift radio sources provide plentiful opportunities for studying the formation and evolution of early galaxies and supermassive black holes. However, the number of known radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) above redshift 4 is rather limited. At high redshifts, it appears that blazars, with relativistically beamed jets pointing towards the observer, are in majority compared to radio-loud sources with jets misaligned with respect to the line of sight. To find more of these misaligned AGN, milliarcsec-scale imaging studies carried out with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) are needed, as they allow us to distinguish between compact core--jet radio sources and those with more extended emission. Previous high-resolution VLBI studies revealed that some of the radio sources among blazar candidates in fact show unbeamed radio emission on milliarcsecond scales. The most accurate optical coordinates determined with the Gaia astrometric space mission are also useful in the classification process. Here, we report on dual-frequency imaging observations of 13 high-redshift (4 < z < 4.5) quasars at 1.7 and 5 GHz with the European VLBI Network. This sample increases the number of z>4 radio sources for which VLBI observations are available by about a quarter. Using structural and physical properties, such as radio morphology, spectral index, variability, brightness temperature, as well as optical coordinates, we identified six blazars and six misaligned radio AGNs, with the remaining one tentatively identified as blazar.

The radio-loud quasar CTD 135 (2234+282, J2236+2828) has been proposed as a candidate compact symmetric object (CSO), based on its symmetric radio structure revealed by multi-frequency very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) imaging observations on milliarcsec angular scales. CSOs are known as young jetted active galactic nuclei (AGN) whose relativistic plasma jets are misaligned with respect to the line of sight. The peculiarity of CTD 135 as a CSO candidate was its detection in gamma-rays, while the vast majority of known gamma-ray emitting AGN are blazars with jets pointing close to our viewing direction. Since only a handful of CSOs are known as gamma-ray sources, the unambiguous identification of a single candidate is important for studying this rare class of objects. By collecting and interpreting observational data from the recent literature, we revisit the classification of CTD 135. We present our results from a mid-infrared interferometric survey targeted at the planet-forming region in the circumstellar disks around low- and intermediate-mass young stars. Our sample consist of 82 objects, including T Tauri stars, Herbig Ae stars, and young eruptive stars. Our main results are: 1) Disks around T Tauri stars are similar to those around Herbig Ae stars, but are relatively more extended once we account for stellar luminosity. 2) From the distribution of the sizes of the mid-infrared emitting region we find that inner dusty disk holes may be present in roughly half of the sample. 3) Our analysis of the silicate spectral feature reveals that the dust in the inner $\sim$1 au region of disks is generally more processed than that in the outer regions. 4) The dust in the disks of T Tauri stars typically show weaker silicate emission in the N band spectrum, compared to Herbig Ae stars, which may indicate a general difference in the disk structure. We present new Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA, 1.5 GHz) radio data for the giant elliptical galaxy IC 4296, supported by archival radio, X-ray (Chandra, XMM-Newton) and optical (SOAR, HST) observations. The galaxy hosts powerful radio jets piercing through the inner hot X-ray emitting atmosphere, depositing most of the energy into the ambient intra-cluster medium (ICM). Whereas the radio surface brightness of the A configuration image is consistent with a Fanaroff-Riley Class I (FR I) system, the D configuration image shows two bright, relative to the central region, large (~160 kpc diameter), well-defined lobes, previously reported by Killeen et al., at a projected distance r~>230 kpc. The XMM-Newton image reveals an X-ray cavity associated with one of the radio lobes. The total enthalpy of the radio lobes is ~7x10^59 erg and the mechanical power output of the jets is ~10^44 erg/s. The jets are mildly curved and possibly re-brightened by the relative motion of the galaxy and the ICM. The lobes display sharp edges, suggesting the presence of bow shocks, which would indicate that they are expanding supersonically. The central entropy and cooling time of the X-ray gas are unusually low and the nucleus hosts a warm H\alpha+[NII] nebula and a cold molecular CO disk. Because most of the energy of the jets is deposited far from the nucleus, the atmosphere of the galaxy continues to cool, apparently feeding the central supermassive black hole and powering the jet activity., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We studied the disc of the unclassified B[e] star HD 50138, in order to explore its structure, and to find indications for the evolutionary status of this system, whether it is a young Herbig Be or a post-main-sequence star. Using high spatial resolution interferometric measurements from MIDI instrument (N-band) on the Very Large Telescope Interferometer, we analysed the disc size, the time-variability of the disc's thermal emission, and the spectral shape of the $10~\mu$m silicate feature. By fitting simple disc models, we determined the inclination and the mid-infrared size of the disc, confirming earlier results based on a lower number of observations. We searched for mid-infrared temporal variability of different regions of the disc, and concluded that its morphology is not experiencing significant changes over the observed epochs. We characterized the mid-infrared silicate feature by determining the feature amplitude and the $11.3/9.8~\mu$m flux ratio. The latter parameter is a good indicator of the grain size. The shape of the feature suggests the presence of crystalline silicate grains in the disc. The interferometric data revealed a strong radial trend in the mineralogy: while the disc's innermost region seems to be dominated by forsterite grains, at intermediate radii both forsterite and enstatite may be present. The outer disc may predominantly contain amorphous silicate particles. A comparison of the observed spectral shape with that of a sample of intermediate-mass stars (supergiants, Herbig Ae/Be stars, unclassified B[e] stars) implied that the evolutionary state of HD 50138 cannot be unambiguously decided from mid-IR spectroscopy., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, to be published in MNRAS

Active galactic nuclei are the most luminous persistent (non-transient, even if often variable) objects in the Universe. They are bright in the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Blazars are a special class where the jets point nearly to our line of sight. Because of this special geometry and the bulk relativistic motion of the plasma in the jet, their radiation is enhanced by relativistic beaming. The majority of extragalactic objects detected in gamma-rays are blazars. However, finding their counterparts in other wavebands could be challenging. Here we present the results of our 5-GHz European VLBI Network (EVN) observation of the radio source J1331+2932, a candidate blazar found while searching for possible gamma-ray emission from the stellar binary system DG CVn (Loh et al. 2017). Apparently periodic optical variations of the luminous high-redshift (z=2.06) quasar PSO J334.2028+1.4075 led Liu et al. (2015) to interpret the variability as the orbital period of a binary supermassive black hole (SMBH) residing in a single circumbinary accretion disk. The proposed orbital separation was around 0.006 pc, and the possible inspiral time about 7 yr in the rest frame of the quasar. Such objects would be of high interest as the difficult-to-find end products of binary SMBH evolution, and potential sources of low-frequency gravitational waves. However, extending the time baseline of the variability study, Liu et al. (2016) later found that the periodicity of PSO J334.2028+1.4075 does not remain persistent. Foord et al. (2017) did not find evidence for the binary active galactic nucleus scenario based on Chandra X-ray observations. The object has also been studied in detail in the radio (Mooley et al. 2018) with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), revealing a lobe-dominated quasar at kpc scales, and possibly a precessing jet, which might retain PSO J334.2028+1.4075 as a binary SMBH candidate. Volonteri et al. (2011) found that the number of radio-loud quasars above redshift 4 calculated from the luminosity function (based upon Swift/BAT observations) is much smaller than the number estimated from the known high-redshift beamed sources, blazars, assuming that for every beamed source with a Lorentz factor of $\Gamma$, statistically $2 \Gamma^2$ non-beamed sources should exist. To explain the missing misaligned (non-beamed) population of high-redshift sources, they proposed various explanations, involving heavy optical obscuration and significantly different Lorentz factors at early cosmological epochs. Our EVN observations targeting high-redshift ($z>4$) blazar candidates revealed 3 sources not showing relativistic beaming, but rather kpc-scale double structures. These three sources have significant radio emission resolved out with the EVN, while they are compact on $\sim 5-10$ arcsec scale. Recently, Saxena et al. (2018) reported the discovery of a possible radio galaxy, J1530$+$1049 at a redshift of z=5.72. We observed the source with the European Very Long Baseline Interferometry Network at $1.7$ GHz. We detected two faint radio features with a separation of $\sim 400$ mas. The radio power calculated from the VLA flux density by Saxena et al. (2018), and the projected source size derived from our EVN data place J1530$+$1049 among the medium-sized symmetric objects (MSOs) which are thought to be young counterparts of radio galaxies (An and Baan 2012). Thus, our finding is consistent with a radio galaxy in an early phase of its evolution as proposed by Saxena et al. The IceCube instrument detected a high-energy cosmic neutrino event on 2017 September 22 (IceCube_170922A, IceCube Collaboration 2018), which the electromagnetic follow-up campaigns associated with the flaring $\gamma$-ray blazar TXS 0506$+$056 (e.g., Padovani et al., 2018). We investigated the mid-infrared variability of the source by using the available single exposure data of the WISE satellite at $3.4$ and $4.6\mu$m. TXS 0506$+$056 experienced a $\sim 30$% brightening in both of these bands a few days prior to the neutrino event. Additional intraday infrared variability can be detected in 2010. Most of the radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies resemble compact steep-spectrum sources. However, the extremely radio-loud ones show blazar-like characteristics, like flat radio spectra, compact radio cores, substantial variability and high brightness temperatures. These objects are thought to be similar to blazars as they possess relativistic jets seen at small angle to the line of sight. This claim has been further supported by the Fermi satellite discovery of gamma-ray emission from a handful of these sources. Using the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) data, we analyzed the mid-infrared variability characteristics of $42$ radio-loud NLS1 at $3.4$ and $4.6\,\mu$m. We found that $27$ out of the studied $42$ sources showed variability in at least one of the two infrared bands. In some cases, significant changes in the infrared colors can alter the location of the source in the WISE color-color diagram which might lead to different classification. More than $60$% of the variable sources also showed variability within a $1-1.5$ day interval. Such short time scales argue for a compact emission region like those associated with the jets. Context. Protoplanetary disks show large diversity regarding their morphology and dust composition. With mid-infrared interferometry the thermal emission of disks can be spatially resolved, and the distribution and properties of the dust within can be studied. Aims. Our aim is to perform a statistical analysis on a large sample of 82 disks around low- and intermediate-mass young stars, based on mid-infrared interferometric observations. We intend to study the distribution of disk sizes, variability, and the silicate dust mineralogy. Methods. Archival mid-infrared interferometric data from the MIDI instrument on the VLTI are homogeneously reduced and calibrated. Geometric disk models are used to fit the observations to get spatial information about the disks. An automatic spectral decomposition pipeline is applied to analyze the shape of the silicate feature. Results. We present the resulting data products in the form of an atlas, containing N band correlated and total spectra, visibilities, and differential phases. The majority of our data can be well fitted with a continuous disk model, except for a few objects, where a gapped model gives a better match. From the mid-infrared size--luminosity relation we find that disks around T Tauri stars are generally colder and more extended with respect to the stellar luminosity than disks around Herbig Ae stars. We find that in the innermost part of the disks ($r \lesssim 1$~au) the silicate feature is generally weaker than in the outer parts, suggesting that in the inner parts the dust is substantially more processed. We analyze stellar multiplicity and find that in two systems (AB Aur and HD 72106) data suggest a new companion or asymmetric inner disk structure. We present a detailed analysis of 30 very long baseline interferometric observations of the BL Lac object S5 1803+784 (z=0.679), obtained between mean observational time 1994.67 and 2012.91 at observational frequency 15 GHz. The long-term behaviour of the jet ridge line reveals the jet experiences an oscillatory motion superposed on its helical jet kinematics on a time-scale of about 6 years. The excess variance of the positional variability indicates the jet components being farther from the VLBI core have larger amplitude in their position variations. The fractional variability amplitude shows slight changes in 3-year bins of the component's position. The temporal variability in the Doppler boosting of the ridge line results in jet regions behaving as flaring "radio lanterns". We offer a qualitative scenario leading to the oscillation of the jet ridge line, that utilizes the orbital motion of the jet emitter black hole due to a binary black hole companion. A correlation analysis implies composite origin of the flux variability of the jet components, emerging due to possibly both the evolving jet-structure and its intrinsic variability., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, 5 tables, accepted to publish in MNRAS

To date, PMN J2134-0419 (at a redshift z=4.33) is the second most distant quasar known with a milliarcsecond-scale morphology permitting direct estimates of the jet proper motion. Based on two-epoch observations, we constrained its radio jet proper motion using the very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) technique. The observations were conducted with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 5 GHz on 1999 November 26 and 2015 October 6. We imaged the central 10-pc scale radio jet emission and modeled its brightness distribution. By identifying a jet component at both epochs separated by 15.86 yr, a proper motion of mu=0.035 +- 0.023 mas/yr is found. It corresponds to an apparent superluminal speed of beta_a=4.1 +- 2.7 c . Relativistic beaming at both epochs suggests that the jet viewing angle with respect to the line of sight is smaller than 20 deg, with a minimum bulk Lorentz factor Gamma=4.3. The small value of the proper motion is in good agreement with the expectations from the cosmological interpretation of the redshift and the current cosmological model. By discovering a narrow-line emitter embedded in an extended Ly-alpha nebula, Husemann et al. (2018) found that the luminous radio-quiet quasar LBQS 0302-0019 is a dual active galactic nucleus (AGN) system. By combining available archival radio interferometric data taken at 8.4 GHz with the Very Large Array (VLA), we found that the weak 0.4-mJy radio source in this system positionally coincides with the unobscured optical quasar while its newly discovered obscured companion has no detectable radio emission (<0.045 mJy/beam, 3-sigma image noise level). The Fermi Large Area Telescope revealed that the extragalactic gamma-ray sky is dominated by blazars, active galactic nuclei (AGN) whose jet is seen at very small angle to the line of sight. To associate and then classify the gamma-ray sources, data have been collected from lower frequency surveys and observations. The gamma-ray source 3FGL J1323.0+2942 is associated with the radio source 4C+29.48 and classified as a blazar of unknown type, lacking optical spectrum and redshift. The higher-resolution radio data showed that 4C+29.48 comprises three bright radio-emitting features located within a ~1'-diameter area. We (re-)analyzed archival Very Large Array and unpublished very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations conducted by the Very Long Baseline Array and the European VLBI Network of 4C+29.48. We also collected data form optical, infrared and X-ray surveys. The northernmost complex of 4C+29.48 contains a blazar with a high brightness temperature compact core and a steep-spectrum jet feature. The blazar is positionally coincident with an optical source at a redshift of 1.142. Its mid-infrared colors also support its association with a gamma-ray emitting blazar. The two other radio complexes have steep radio spectra and do not have optical or infrared counterparts in currently available surveys. Based on the radio morphology, they are unlikely to be related to the blazar. We discuss the possibilities whether the two radio features are lobes of a radio galaxy, or gravitationally lensed images of a background source. We propose to associate 3FGL J1323.0+2942 in subsequent versions of the Fermi catalog with the blazar residing in northernmost complex. We suggest naming this source J1323+2941A to avoid misinterpretation arising from the fact that the coordinates of the currently listed radio counterpart 4C+29.48 is closer to a most probably unrelated radio source. Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1) are an intriguing subclass of active galactic nuclei. Their observed properties indicate low central black hole mass and high accretion rate. The extremely radio-loud NLS1 sources often show relativistic beaming and are usually regarded as younger counterparts of blazars. Recently, the object SDSS J110006.07+442144.3 was reported as a candidate NLS1 source. The characteristics of its dramatic optical flare indicated its jet-related origin. The spectral energy distribution of the object was similar to that of the gamma-ray detected radio-loud NLS1, PMN J0948+0022. Our high-resolution European Very Long Baseline Interferometry Network observations at 1.7 and 5 GHz revealed a compact core feature with a brightness temperature of >~ 10^(10) K. Using the lowest brightness temperature value and assuming a moderate Lorentz factor of ~9 the jet viewing angle is <~ 26 deg. Archival Very Large Array data show a large-scale radio structure with a projected linear size of ~150 kpc reminiscent of double-sided morphology., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. Context. DG Tau is a low-mass pre-main sequence star, whose strongly accreting protoplanetary disk exhibits a so-far enigmatic behavior: its mid-infrared thermal emission is strongly time-variable, even turning the 10 $\mu$m silicate feature from emission to absorption temporarily. Aims. We look for the reason for the spectral variability at high spatial resolution and at multiple epochs. Methods. We study the temporal variability of the mid-infrared interferometric signal, observed with the VLTI/MIDI instrument at six epochs between 2011 and 2014. We fit a geometric disk model to the observed interferometric signal to obtain spatial information about the disk. We also model the mid-infrared spectra by template fitting to characterize the profile and time dependence of the silicate emission. We use physically motivated radiative transfer modeling to interpret the mid-infrared interferometric spectra. Results. The inner disk (r<1-3 au) spectra exhibit a 10 $\mu$m absorption feature related to amorphous silicate grains. The outer disk (r>1-3 au) spectra show a crystalline silicate feature in emission, similar to the spectra of comet Hale-Bopp. The striking difference between the inner and outer disk spectral feature is highly unusual among T Tauri stars. The mid-infrared variability is dominated by the outer disk. The strength of the silicate feature changed by more than a factor of two. Between 2011 and 2014 the half-light radius of the mid-infrared-emitting region decreased from 1.15 to 0.7 au. Conclusions. For the origin of the absorption we discuss four possible explanations: a cold obscuring envelope, an accretion heated inner disk, a temperature inversion on the disk surface and a misaligned inner geometry. The silicate emission in the outer disk can be explained by dusty material high above the disk plane, whose mass can change with time, possibly due to turbulence in the disk., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures

Blazars are active galactic nuclei (AGN) whose relativistic jets point nearly to the line of sight. Their compact radio structure can be imaged with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) on parsec scales. Blazars at extremely high redshifts provide a unique insight into the AGN phenomena in the early Universe. We observed four radio sources at redshift $z>4$ with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 1.7 and 5 GHz. These objects were previously classified as blazar candidates based on X-ray observations. One of them, J2134$-$0419 is firmly confirmed as a blazar with our VLBI observations, due to its relativistically beamed radio emission. Its radio jet extended to $\sim$10 milli-arcsec scale makes this source a promising target for follow-up VLBI observations to reveal any apparent proper motion. Another target, J0839+5112 shows a compact radio structure typical of quasars. There is evidence for flux density variability and its radio "core" has a flat spectrum. However, the EVN data suggest that its emission is not Doppler-boosted. The remaining two blazar candidates (J1420+1205 and J2220+0025) show radio properties totally unexpected from radio AGN with small-inclination jet. Their emission extends to arcsec scales and the Doppler factors of the central components are well below 1. Their structures resemble that of double-lobed radio AGN with large inclination to the line of sight. This is in contrast with the blazar-type modeling of their multi-band spectral energy distributions. In hierarchical structure formation scenarios, merging galaxies are expected to be seen in different phases of their coalescence. Simulations suggest that simultaneous activity of the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the centres of the merging galaxies may be expected at kpc-scale separations. Currently, there are no direct observational methods which allow the selection of a large number of such dual active galactic nuclei (AGN) candidates. SDSS J142507.32+323137.4 was reported as a promising candidate source based on its optical spectrum. Here we report on our sensitive e-MERLIN observations performed at $1.6$ and at $5$ GHz, which show that the optical spectrum of the source can be more straightforwardly explained with jet-cloud interactions instead of the dual AGN scenario., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure. The quasar PG 1302$-$102 is believed to harbour a supermassive binary black hole (SMBBH) system. Using the available 15 GHz and $2-8$ GHz, multi-epoch Very Long Baseline Array data, we constrain the pc-scale jet properties based on the inferred mean proper motion, including a bulk Lorentz factor $\geq 5.1 \pm 0.8$, jet inclination angle $\leq (11.4 \pm 1.7)$ degrees, projected position angle $= 31.8$ degrees, intrinsic half opening angle $\leq (0.9 \pm 0.1)$ degrees and a mean $2-8$ GHz spectral index of 0.31. A general relativistic helical jet model is presented and applied to predict quasi-periodic oscillations of $\sim$ 10 days, power law power spectrum shape and a contribution of up to $\sim$ 53 percent to the observed variable core flux density. The model is used to make a case for high resolution, moderately sampled, long duration radio interferometric observations to reveal signatures due to helical knots and distinguish them from those due to SMBBH orbital activity including a phase difference $\sim \pi$ and an amplitude ratio (helical light curve amplitude/SMBBH light curve amplitude) of $0.2-3.3$. The prescription can be used to identify helical kinematic signatures from quasars, providing possible candidates for further studies with polarization measurements. According to hierarchical structure formation models, merging galaxies are expected to be seen in different stages of their coalescence. However, currently there are no straightforward observational methods neither to select nor to confirm a large number of dual active galactic nuclei (AGN) candidates. Most attempts involve the better understanding of double-peaked narrow emission line sources, to distinguish the objects where the emission lines originate from narrow-line kinematics or jet-driven outflows from those which might harbour dual AGN. We observed four such candidate sources with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 1.5 GHz with $\sim$ 10 milli-arcsecond angular resolution where spectral profiles of AGN optical emission suggested the existence of dual AGN. In SDSS J210449.13-000919.1 and SDSS J23044.82-093345.3, the radio structures are aligned with the optical emission features, thus the double-peaked emission lines might be the results of jet-driven outflows. In the third detected source SDSS J115523.74+150756.9, the radio structure is less extended and oriented nearly perpendicular to the position angle derived from optical spectroscopy. The fourth source remained undetected with the VLBA but it has been imaged with the Very Large Array at arcsec resolution a few months before our observations, suggesting the existence of extended radio structure. Most of the gamma-ray emitting active galactic nuclei (AGN) are blazars, although there is still a small fraction of non-blazar AGN in the Fermi/LAT catalog. Among these misaligned gamma-ray-emitting AGN, a few can be classified as Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs). In contrast to blazars in which gamma-ray emission is generally thought to originate from highly beamed relativistic jets, the source of gamma-ray emission in unbeamed CSOs remains an open question. The rarity of the gamma-ray emitting CSOs is a mystery as well. Hot dust-obscured galaxies (hot DOGs) are a rare class of hyperluminous infrared galaxies identified with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) satellite. The majority of them is at high redshifts (z~2-3), at the peak epoch of star formation in the Universe. Infrared, optical, radio, and X-ray data suggest that hot DOGs contain heavily obscured, extremely luminous active galactic nuclei (AGN). This class may represent a short phase in the life of the galaxies, signifying the transition from starburst- to AGN-dominated phases. Hot DOGs are typically radio-quiet, but some of them show mJy-level emission in the radio (microwave) band. We observed four hot DOGs using the technique of very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). The 1.7-GHz observations with the European VLBI Network (EVN) revealed weak radio features in all sources. The radio is free from dust obscuration and, at such high redshifts, VLBI is sensitive only to compact structures that are characteristic of AGN activity. In two cases (WISE J0757+5113, WISE J1603+2745), the flux density of the VLBI-detected components is much smaller than the total flux density, suggesting that ~70-90 per cent of the radio emission, while still dominated by AGN, originates from angular scales larger than probed by the EVN. The source WISE J1146+4129 appears a candidate compact symmetric object, and WISE J1814+3412 shows a 5.1-kpc double structure, reminiscent of hot spots in a medium-sized symmetric object. We investigate the pc-scale kinematics and kpc-scale radio morphology of the quasar PG 1302-102, which may harbour a sub-pc separation supermassive binary black hole system at its centre as inferred from optical variability. High-resolution radio interferometric measurements obtained with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) in the Monitoring Of Jets in Active galactic nuclei with VLBA Experiments (MOJAVE) programme at 15 GHz at 20 epochs spanning 17 years were analysed to investigate the pc-scale radio structure. Archival observations with the Very Large Array (VLA) at 1.4 GHz and 5 GHz were obtained to study the kpc-scale morphology. We find that the pc-scale jet is inclined within ~2.2 deg to the line of sight and has a half-opening angle of about 0.2 deg. The parameters derived from the pc-scale radio jet are qualitatively consistent with those obtained from the analysis of the optical light curve of PG 1302-102. We obtain at least 0.08 for the mass ratio of the two black holes in the system. We find some indication for a helical jet structure on kpc-scale, but the directions of the inner and the extended radio jets are significantly different, obstructing a straightforward connection of the pc- and kpc-scale jets within the binary scenario., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted to MNRAS

HESS J1943+213 is a TeV source close to the Galactic plane proposed to be a BL Lac object. Our high resolution EVN observation failed to recover two thirds of the source flux density detected simultaneously by the WSRT. Our recent e-MERLIN observations in L and C bands show only a point source with flux density comparable to the EVN detection. Thus the structure responsible for the missing flux density has to be larger than 2". Hot dust-obscured galaxies (hot DOGs) are a rare class of hyperluminous infrared galaxies recently identified with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) satellite. The majority of the ~1000-member all-sky population should be at high redshifts (z~2-3), at the peak of star formation in the history of the Universe. This class most likely represents a short phase during galaxy merging and evolution, a transition from starburst- to AGN-dominated phases. For the first time, we observed four hot DOGs with known mJy-level radio emission using the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 1.7 GHz, in a hope to find compact radio features characteristic to AGN activity. All four target sources are detected at ~15-30 mas angular resolution, confirming the presence of an active nucleus. The sources are spatially resolved, i.e. the flux density of the VLBI-detected components is smaller than the total flux density, suggesting that a fraction of the radio emission originates from larger-scale (partly starburst-related) activity. Few high-redshift, radio-loud quasars are known to date. The extremely luminous, radio-bright quasar, SDSS J013127.34-032100.1 was recently discovered at a redshift of $z=5.18$. We observed the source with high resolution very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) at 1.7 GHz with the European VLBI Network (EVN) and found a single compact radio component. We estimated a lower limit to the brightness temperature of the detected radio component, T_B~10^{11} K. Additionaly, when compared to archival radio data, the source showed significant flux density variation. The Seyfert galaxy NGC 5515 has double-peaked narrow-line emission in its optical spectrum, and it has been suggested that this could indicate that it has two active nuclei. We observed the source with high resolution Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) at two radio frequencies, reduced archival Very Large Array data, and re-analysed its optical spectrum. We detected a single, compact radio source at the position of NGC 5515, with no additional radio emission in its vicinity. The optical spectrum of the source shows that the blue and red components of the double-peaked lines have very similar characteristics. While we cannot rule out unambiguously that NGC 5515 harbours a dual AGN, the assumption of a single AGN provides a more plausible explanation for the radio observations and the optical spectrum., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Very long baseline interferometry at millimetre/submillimetre wavelengths (mmVLBI) offers the highest achievable spatial resolution at any wavelength in astronomy. The anticipated inclusion of ALMA as a phased array into a global VLBI network will bring unprecedented sensitivity and a transformational leap in capabilities for mmVLBI. Building on years of pioneering efforts in the US and Europe the ongoing ALMA Phasing Project (APP), a US-led international collaboration with MPIfR-led European contributions, is expected to deliver a beamformer and VLBI capability to ALMA by the end of 2014 (APP: Fish et al. 2013, arXiv:1309.3519). This report focuses on the future use of mmVLBI by the international users community from a European viewpoint. Firstly, it highlights the intense science interest in Europe in future mmVLBI observations as compiled from the responses to a general call to the European community for future research projects. Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) allows for high-resolution and high-sensitivity observations of relativistic jets, that can reveal periodicities of several years in their structure. We perform an analysis of long-term VLBI data of the quasar S5 1928+738 in terms of a geometric model of a helical structure projected onto the plane of the sky. We monitor the direction of the jet axis through its inclination and position angles. We decompose the variation of the inclination of the inner 2 milliarcseconds of the jet of S5 1928+738 into a periodic term with amplitude of ~0.89 deg and a linear decreasing trend with rate of ~0.05 deg/yr. We also decompose the variation of the position angle into a periodic term with amplitude of ~3.39 deg and a linear increasing trend with rate of ~0.24 deg/yr. We interpret the periodic components as arising from the orbital motion of a binary black hole inspiraling at the jet base and derive corrected values of the mass ratio and separation from the accumulated 18 years of VLBI data. Then we identify the linear trends in the variations as due to the slow reorientation of the spin of the jet emitter black hole induced by the spin-orbit precession and we determine the precession period T_SO=4852+/-646 yr of the more massive black hole, acting as the jet emitter. Circumstellar disks around stars older than 10 Myr are expected to be gas-poor. There are, however, two examples of old (30-40 Myr) debris-like disks containing a detectable amount of cold CO gas. Here we present ALMA and Herschel Space Observatory observations of one of these disks, around HD 21997, and study the distribution and origin of the dust and its connection to the gas. Our ALMA continuum images at 886um clearly resolve a broad ring of emission within a diameter of ~4.5 arcsec, adding HD 21997 to the dozen debris disks resolved at (sub)millimeter wavelengths. Modeling the morphology of the ALMA image with a radiative transfer code suggests inner and outer radii of ~55 and ~150 AU, and a dust mass of 0.09 M_Earth. Our data and modeling hints at an extended cold outskirt of the ring. Comparison with the morphology of the CO gas in the disk reveals an inner dust-free hole where gas nevertheless can be detected. Based on dust grain lifetimes, we propose that the dust content of this gaseous disk is of secondary origin produced by planetesimals. The signatures of dust processing and grain growth - related to the formation of rocky planets - are easily seen in mid-infrared spectral features. One important diagnostic tool in this context is the silicate feature in the spectra of young stellar objects (YSO). The low-mass YSO, DG Tau shows unique temporal variations in its silicate feature. We conducted multi-epoch observations of DG Tau with the MID-Infrared Interferometric instrument of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer to obtain the spectra of the inner and outer disk regions in order to investigate where the previously reported variations of the silicate feature originate from. Here we present the preliminary results of the first two epochs of observations. We found that on a time-scale of two months, the source showed significant brightening. At the same time the mid-infrared emitting region expanded. While the identification of the silicate feature is difficult, our results qualitatively agree with the scenario explaining the varying silicate feature with dust lifted up above the disk., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. The galaxy 3C\,316 is the brightest in the radio band among the optically-selected candidates exhibiting double-peaked narrow optical emission lines. Observations with the Very Large Array (VLA), Multi-Element Remotely Linked Interferometer Network (e-MERLIN), and the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 5\,GHz have been used to study the radio structure of the source in order to determine the nature of the nuclear components and to determine the presence of radio cores. The e-MERLIN image of 3C 316 reveals a collimated coherent east-west emission structure with a total extent of about 3 kpc. The EVN image shows seven discrete compact knots on an S-shaped line. However, none of these knots could be unambiguously identified as an AGN core. The observations suggest that the majority of the radio structure belongs to a powerful radio AGN, whose physical size and radio spectrum classify it as a compact steep-spectrum source. Given the complex radio structure with radio blobs and knots, the possibility of a kpc-separation dual AGN cannot be excluded if the secondary is either a naked core or radio quiet., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables. Context. Blazars are powerful active galactic nuclei (AGNs) radiating prominently in the whole electromagnetic spectrum, from the radio to the X-ray and gamma-ray bands. Their emission is dominated by synchrotron and inverse-Compton radiation from a relativistic jet originating from an accreting central supermassive black hole. The object IGR J12319-0749 has recently been identified as a soft gamma-ray source with the IBIS instrument of the INTEGRAL satellite, coincident with a quasar at high redshift (z=3.12). Aims. We studied the radio structure of IGR J12319-0749 to strengthen its blazar identification by detecting a compact radio jet on the milli-arcsecond (mas) angular scale, and to measure its astrometric position accurate to mas level. Methods. We used the technique of electronic very long baseline interferometry (e-VLBI) to image IGR J12319-0749 with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 5 GHz on 2012 June 19. Results. IGR J12319-0749 (J1231-0747) is a compact radio source, practically unresolved on interferometric baselines up to ~136 million wavelengths. The estimated brightness temperature (at least ~2 x 10^12 K) indicates that the radio emission of its jet is Doppler-boosted. The accurate position of the compact radio source is consistent with the positions measured at higher energies., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure. We present the results of a series of radio, optical, X-ray and gamma-ray observations of the BL Lac object S50716+714 carried out between April 2007 and January 2011. The multi-frequency observations were obtained using several ground and space based facilities. The intense optical monitoring of the source reveals faster repetitive variations superimposed on a long-term variability trend at a time scale of ~350 days. Episodes of fast variability recur on time scales of ~ 60-70 days. The intense and simultaneous activity at optical and gamma-ray frequencies favors the SSC mechanism for the production of the high-energy emission. Two major low-peaking radio flares were observed during this high optical/gamma-ray activity period. The radio flares are characterized by a rising and a decaying stage and are in agreement with the formation of a shock and its evolution. We found that the evolution of the radio flares requires a geometrical variation in addition to intrinsic variations of the source. Different estimates yield a robust and self-consistent lower limits of \delta > 20 and equipartition magnetic field B_eq > 0.36 G. Causality arguments constrain the size of emission region \theta < 0.004 mas. We found a significant correlation between flux variations at radio frequencies with those at optical and gamma-rays. The optical/GeV flux variations lead the radio variability by ~65 days. The longer time delays between low-peaking radio outbursts and optical flares imply that optical flares are the precursors of radio ones. An orphan X-ray flare challenges the simple, one-zone emission models, rendering them too simple. The highest-redshift quasars are still rare and valuable objects for observational astrophysics and cosmology. They provide important constraints on the growth of the earliest supermassive black holes in the Universe, and information on the physical conditions in their environment. Among the nearly 60 quasars currently known at redshifts z>5.7, only a handful are "strong" emitters in radio continuum. These can be targets of sensitive high-resolution Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations to reveal their innermost structure, down to ~10 pc linear scales. We review the results of our earlier European VLBI Network (EVN) experiments on three of the most distant radio quasars known to date, and give a preliminary report on the EVN detection of a fourth one. The results obtained so far suggest that we see really young active galactic nuclei - not just in a cosmological sense but also in terms of their active life in radio., Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure. We report on the VLBI follow-up observations using the Japanese VLBI Network (JVN) array at 22 GHz for the largest X-ray flare of TeV blazar Mrk 421 that occurred in mid-February, 2010. The total of five epochs of observations were performed at intervals of about 20 days between March 7 and May 31, 2010. No new-born component associated with the flare was seen directly in the total intensity images obtained by our multi-epoch VLBI observations. However, one jet component located at ~1 mas north-west from the core was able to be identified, and its proper motion can be measured as -1.66+/-0.46 mas yr^-1, which corresponds to an apparent velocity of -3.48+/-0.97 c. Here, this negative velocity indicates that the jet component was apparently moving toward the core. As the most plausible explanation, we discuss that the apparent negative velocity was possibly caused by the ejection of a new component, which could not be resolved with our observations. In this case, the obtained Doppler factor of the new component is around 10 to 20, which is consistent with the ones typically estimated by model fittings of spectral energy distribution for this source., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report results from a 1 week multi-wavelength campaign to monitor the BL Lac object S5 0716+714 (on December 9-16, 2009). In the radio bands the source shows rapid (~ (0.5-1.5) day) intra-day variability with peak amplitudes of up to ~ 10 %. The variability at 2.8 cm leads by about 1 day the variability at 6 cm and 11 cm. This time lag and more rapid variations suggests an intrinsic contribution to the source's intraday variability at 2.8 cm, while at 6 cm and 11 cm interstellar scintillation (ISS) seems to predominate. Large and quasi-sinusoidal variations of ~ 0.8 mag were detected in the V, R and I-bands. The X-ray data (0.2-10 keV) do not reveal significant variability on a 4 day time scale, favoring reprocessed inverse-Compton over synchrotron radiation in this band. The characteristic variability time scales in radio and optical bands are similar. A quasi-periodic variation (QPO) of 0.9 - 1.1 days in the optical data may be present, but if so it is marginal and limited to 2.2 cycles. Cross-correlations between radio and optical are discussed. The lack of a strong radio-optical correlation indicates different physical causes of variability (ISS at long radio wavelengths, source intrinsic origin in the optical), and is consistent with a high jet opacity and a compact synchrotron component peaking at ~= 100 GHz in an ongoing very prominent flux density outburst. For the campaign period, we construct a quasi-simultaneous spectral energy distribution (SED), including gamma-ray data from the FERMI satellite. We obtain lower limits for the relativistic Doppler-boosting of delta >= 12-26, which for a BL\,Lac type object, is remarkably high., Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures, table 2; Accepted for Publication in MNRAS
