In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Psychological Science Accelerator coordinated three large-scale psychological studies to examine the effects of loss-gain framing, cognitive reappraisals, and autonomy framing manipulations on behavioral intentions and affective measures. The data collected (April to October 2020) included specific measures for each experimental study, a general questionnaire examining health prevention behaviors and COVID-19 experience, geographical and cultural context characterization, and demographic information for each participant. Each participant started the study with the same general questions and then was randomized to complete either one longer experiment or two shorter experiments. Data were provided by 73,223 participants with varying completion rates. Participants completed the survey from 111 geopolitical regions in 44 unique languages/dialects. The anonymized dataset described here is provided in both raw and processed formats to facilitate re-use and further analyses. The dataset offers secondary analytic opportunities to explore coping, framing, and self-determination across a diverse, global sample obtained at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which can be merged with other time-sampled or geographic data.

Purpose:Cognitive impairment is a commonly reported side or late effect of cancer treatment deteriorating patients’ quality of life. As such, it is essential to look at patients’ self-evaluation in addition to objective assessments. The goals of the current study were to (1) examine the sociodemographic, clinical and psychological factors related to subjective cognitive impairment (SCI) perception; (2) analyze the complex mutual interconnections between SCIs; and (3) address patients’ perspectives on SCI and supportive care. Method:A heterogeneous sample of oncological patients (N = 566; 68.6% female; M = 54, SD = 14.2, the most prevalent being breast cancer - 31.1%) was recruited. Eighteen items covering the senses, attention, memory, spatial functions, decision-making and speech were administered. The response scale was constructed to reflect the chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment (CICI) and post-traumatic growth (PTG) theories. A network of subjectively perceived changes in cognitive functions was estimated while three open-ended questions addressed patients’ perspectives on SCI. Results:Within the network, deficits in spatial perception, attention focus and problem-solving ability were the highest on the strength index while the deficits related to the senses were the least influential. From the moderating factors, finishing chemotherapy, cancer relapse, pain, PTSD and sadness caused invariance in the network’s global strength or structure. Conclusion:The findings indicate that psychological-based interventions focused on higher cognitive functions could improve patients’ quality of life. The presence of supportive care and available information could strengthen SCI intervention and prevention for patients with cancer.

BackgroundSince the outbreak of COVID-19, understanding and describing the changes in experiences related to the pandemic and its correlates have become crucial. The current study aims to provide a psychometric evaluation and examination of the relationship of two COVID-related anxiety scales through the latent and network approach.MethodsThe data was collected from the same participants at two time points (Nwave 1 = 1283; Nwave 2 = 1326). The study examined the psychometric properties of the Pandemic Anxiety Scale and Coronaphobia scale. It also examined the factor structure, invariance and relationship with selected variables through both the latent and network approach.ResultsThe PAS and Coronaphobia scale provided good fit and psychometric properties. The results also indicated that distinguishing between them is crucial as they were related differently to various variables. The global network models provided a more complex insight in their connections with the set of selected variables.ConclusionThe PAS and Coronaphobia scales are brief and valid measures that can be used in research looking at mental health issues related to the pandemic. The present study shows a unique pattern of relationships of these scales with other variables, extending previous studies into the topic of COVID-related anxiety.

Ideal partner preferences (i.e., ratings of the desirability of attributes like attractiveness or intelligence) are the source of numerous foundational findings in the interdisciplinary literature on human mating. Recently, research on the predictive validity of ideal partner preference-matching (i.e., do people positively evaluate partners who match versus mismatch their ideals?) has become mired in several problems. For one, articles exhibit discrepant analytic and reporting practices. Furthermore, different findings emerge across laboratories worldwide, perhaps because they sample different relationship contexts and/or populations. The current project—partnered with the Psychological Science Accelerator—can bring clarity to this literature. This registered report uses a highly powered design across multiple world regions to calculate preference-matching effect sizes and variability estimates for all relevant analytic tests. It also examines effects in different relationship contexts and subsamples (e.g., attraction, established relationships, recently formed relationships).

This large-scale meta-analysis aimed to provide the most comprehensive synthesis to date of the available evidence from the pre-COVID period on risk and protective factors for (internet) gaming disorder (as defined in the DSM-5 or ICD-11) across all studied populations. The risk/protective factors included demographic characteristics, psychological, psychopathological, social, and gaming-related factors. In total, we have included 1586 effects from 253 different studies, summarizing data from 210557 participants. Apart from estimating these predictive associations and relevant moderating effects, we implemented state-of-the-art adjustments for publication bias, psychometric artifacts, and other forms of bias arising from the publication process. Additionally, we carried out an in-depth assessment of the quality of underlying evidence by examining indications of selective reporting, statistical inconsistencies, the typical power of utilized study designs to detect theoretically relevant effects, and performed various sensitivity analyses. The available evidence suggests the existence of numerous moderately strong and highly heterogeneous risk factors (e.g., male gender, depression, impulsivity, anxiety, stress, gaming time, escape motivation, or excessive use of social networks) but only a few empirically robust protective factors (self-esteem, intelligence, life satisfaction, and education; all having markedly smaller effect sizes). We discuss the theoretical implications of our results for prominent theoretical models of gaming disorder and for the existing and future prevention strategies. The impact of various examined biasing factors on the available evidence seemed to be modest, yet we identified shortcomings in the measurement and reporting practices. peerReviewed

Currently, mental disorders are usually conceptualized as a hidden causal factor, manifested by its symptoms. This notion rests upon the reflective latent model, which is implicitly at work every time complex symptomatology gets summarized by a single number or a categorical state. The present paper reflects on the quantitative, testable implications of this psychometric model and shows how its restraints are untenable for most mental disorders. The observed data are instead consistent with mental disorders being complex dynamic systems. Instead of being treated as interchangeable measures of the same latent factor, symptoms likely act as independent causal entities, directly affecting each other. In recent years, this shift in ontological stance toward psychopathology has laid a basis for adapting the network theory. Under this theory, a mental disorder is a relatively stable emergent state, which arises due to a pronounced and recurrent interaction of causally linked symptoms. It is discussed how models embedded within the network theory can help provide insight into the etiopathogenesis of mental disorders and address clinical intervention. In conclusion, limits and future challenges to the network theory are discussed.

ObjectivesCancer is a serious event in a person's life. However, certain coping strategies in relation to selected social, emotional and personality factors appear to manage the disease.MethodsSources of social support were tested in cancer survivors (N = 696) using hierarchical linear regression. Selected personality variables in terms of sociodemographic, clinical, and emotional factors were used as predictors of adaptive and maladaptive coping strategies.Results It was found that adaptive coping strategies were more frequent in younger patients, in patients who attended cancer support groups and those with a greater level of optimism. Maladaptive coping was related to the higher level of experience of pain and sadness, neuroticism, and pessimism. The absence of a relapse and the time since the disease had been diagnosed were also important factors in coping with cancer.Conclusions The results point to the importance of considering various individual factors in the process of intervention to facilitate adaptive coping and to reduce maladaptive coping.

In a test of their global-/local-processing-style model, Förster, Liberman, and Kuschel (2008) found that people assimilate a primed concept (e.g., “aggressive”) into their social judgments after a global prime (e.g., they rate a person as being more aggressive than do people in a no-prime condition) but contrast their judgment away from the primed concept after a local prime (e.g., they rate the person as being less aggressive than do people in a no prime-condition). This effect was not replicated by Reinhard (2015) in the Reproducibility Project: Psychology. However, the authors of the original study noted that the replication could not provide a test of the moderation effect because priming did not occur. They suggested that the primes might have been insufficiently applicable and the scenarios insufficiently ambiguous to produce priming. In the current replication project, we used both Reinhard’s protocol and a revised protocol that was designed to increase the likelihood of priming, to test the original authors’ suggested explanation for why Reinhard did not observe the moderation effect. Teams from nine universities contributed to this project. We first conducted a pilot study ( N = 530) and successfully selected ambiguous scenarios for each site. We then pilot-tested the aggression prime at five different sites ( N = 363) and found that it did not successfully produce priming. In agreement with the first author of the original report, we replaced the prime with a task that successfully primed aggression (hostility) in a pilot study by McCarthy et al. (2018). In the final replication study ( N = 1,460), we did not find moderation by protocol type, and judgment patterns in both protocols were inconsistent with the effects observed in the original study. We discuss these findings and possible explanations.

Early maladaptive schemas (EMS) are self-destructive emotional and cognitive patterns that develop in childhood but manifest later in response to certain life situations. The most obvious are stressful life situations such as traumatic experiences. EMS are one of the core factors in the development of psychopathology. The two most common psychopathologies that develop after surviving trauma are post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. Thus, knowledge about how EMS are related to PTSD and depression in a trauma-exposed population is important. The present study aims to show how different EMS are differently related to PTSD, depression, and their symptoms clusters in 270 trauma-exposed persons using three different analysis approaches. The correlation analysis found that all EMS correlate moderately to strongly positively with PTSD and depression. The mistrust and self-sacrifice schemas were predictors of both PTSD and depression. Depression was also predicted by dependence and defectiveness. The network analysis revealed that both PTSD and depression were directly related to mistrust, self-sacrifice and vulnerability to harm. In addition, PTSD was found to be directly connected to enmeshment and depression to defectiveness. In the clinical picture of PTSD, mistrust was directly related to anxious arousal and negative affect, vulnerability to harm to dysphoric arousal, defectiveness to anhedonia and enmeshment to externalizing behavior. Mistrust was directly related to the affective symptoms of depression, vulnerability to harm and failure to achieve with cognitive symptoms of depression, self-sacrifice and dependence with somatic symptoms of depression. The network approach could bring insight into how EMS are related to psychopathology as well as offering a new perspective into the dynamics of EMS and different psychopathologic processes in the trauma-exposed population.

Cancer is a stressful life event that can lead to specific posttraumatic reactions. Posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and posttraumatic growth (PTG) are two main posttraumatic reactions that are related to each other, and both have different correlates.The linearity of the relationship between PTG and PTSS and the different socio-demographic, cancer-related, emotional, and psychological correlates were analyzed in patients with cancer (N = 126).The relationship between PTG and PTSS was found to be more curvilinear than linear. PTSS was more strongly related to psychological factors (e.g., anxious preoccupation, hope-helplessness, and resilience) while PTG was strongly related to existential factors (e.g., self-transcendence and religiosity).The results show that cancer-related PTSS and PTG are specifically related constructs which are related differently to particular correlates. Specifically, the greatest differences were observed in the psychological variables. In the early phases, therapeutic interventions focused on variables related to PTSS can lead to the reduction of PTSS. In follow-up phases, the therapeutic intervention focused on the increase of the level of variables related to PTG can help the development of PTG.

A cancer diagnosis is a stressful life event that could lead to higher levels of psychological distress. As a result of its traumatic nature, cancer could trigger certain posttraumatic reactions. The most examined posttraumatic reactions in cancer are posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as the negative changes and posttraumatic growth (PTG) as the positive changes. PTSD and PTG can coexist with each other and have some shared and different correlates. PTSD, PTG, their relationships and their correlates have mostly been studied in mixed samples of patients having cancer treatment and as well as cancer survivors. The present study explored PTSD, PTG, their correlates and their interconnection in separate samples of patients in active treatment (N = 181) and cancer survivors (N = 419). It examined various types of correlates such as sociodemographic (e.g., gender, age), cancer-related (e.g., relapse, late treatment impact), coping (e.g., anxious preoccupation, fighting spirit), emotional (e.g., pain, depression), personality factors (e.g., neuroticism, resilience), eudaimonic (e.g., meaningfulness), social (e.g., regular attendance of cancer support group) and spiritual (e.g., the practice of spirituality). In addition, network models of PTSD, PTG and PTSD-PTG were estimated and compared in both samples. There were different correlates of PTSD and PTG found in patients and survivors. From the network perspective, PTG and PTSD were linked in different patterns in both groups. These results highlight which correlates of posttraumatic reactions are important for patients in treatment and for cancer survivors. The results also depict which PTSD symptoms and PTG indicators are most important in the PTG-PTSD interconnection amongst patients and survivors.

The PTSD, PTG and combined PTSD-PTG network structure with bridge nodes were estimated in 696 adult cancer survivors. The most central indicators in the PTG network were putting more effort into relationships, the ability to do better things with one’s own life and a greater sense of closeness with others. The most central symptoms in the PTSD network were being jumpy or startled and cancer-related flashbacks. Hypervigilance (PTSD symptom), knowing better that one can handle difficulties and changing priorities about what is important in life (PTG indicators) were identified as the nodes that link PTSD and PTG. In the cancer survivors with lower and higher levels of PTG, PTSD network structure, and the PTG strength of centrality indicators were different. In addition, PTSD and PTG were linked through different bridge nodes. This supports the hypothesis that PTSD and PTG are related differently in people with low and high PTG. The network approach can bring new insight into understanding the negative and positive posttraumatic reactions and their co-occurrence in cancer survivors.

Objective Cancer survivors' satisfaction with life should be seen through the psychological factors related to a person's capabilities to face and handle the situation. This study aimed to (1) examine the relationships of satisfaction with life, posttraumatic growth, resilience and coping strategies in a global network model, (2) find the bridge indicators between satisfaction with life and the other constructs, and (3) test for the invariance of the network structures across several moderating variables. Methods In a heterogeneous sample of 696 cancer survivors (69% female; mean age = 53.1 ± 15.44 years; median time from being diagnosed = 4 years; breast cancer was the most frequent type of cancer) their satisfaction with life, resilience, coping strategies and posttraumatic growth was measured. In order to account for their complexity, the relationships between the constructs were explored using a network analysis approach. Results The network analysis shows that satisfaction with life is strongly connected to resilience, moderately connected to coping strategies, and has a weak connection with posttraumatic growth. In the separate networks, the relationships between the psychological constructs were examined in greater detail. Besides some exceptions observed in the degree of disability, the networks were invariant across gender, age, years since being diagnosed, cancer type and treatment type. Conclusion The findings suggest that interventions focused on cancer survivors' coping strategies and resilience could help increase their satisfaction with life. However, further replication of the proposed and/or modified model is needed. peerReviewed

Voluntary isolation is one of the most effective methods for individuals to help prevent the transmission of diseases such as COVID-19. Understanding why people leave their homes when advised not to do so and identifying what contextual factors predict this non-compliant behavior is essential for policymakers and public health officials. To provide insight on these factors, we collected data from 42,169 individuals across 16 countries. Participants responded to items inquiring about their socio-cultural environment, such as the adherence of fellow citizens, as well as their mental states, such as their level of loneliness and boredom. We trained random forest models to predict whether someone had left their home during a one week period during which they were asked to voluntarily isolate themselves. The analyses indicated that overall, an increase in the feeling of being caged leads to an increased probability of leaving home. In addition, an increased feeling of responsibility and an increased fear of getting infected decreased the probability of leaving home. The models predicted compliance behavior with between 54% and 91% accuracy within each country’s sample. In addition, we modeled factors leading to risky behavior in the pandemic context. We observed an increased probability of visiting risky places as both the anticipated number of people and the importance of the activity increased. Conversely, the probability of visiting risky places increased as the perceived putative effectiveness of social distancing decreased. The variance explained in our models predicting risk ranged from < .01 to .54 by country. Together, our findings can inform behavioral interventions to increase adherence to lockdown recommendations in pandemic conditions.

Fifteen research teams independently designed studies to answer five original research questions related to moral judgments, negotiations, and implicit cognition. Participants from 2 separate large samples (total N 15,000) were then randomly assigned to complete 1 version of each study. Effect sizes varied dramatically across different sets of materials designed to test the same hypothesis: Materials from different teams rendered statistically significant effects in opposite directions for 4 of 5 hypotheses, with the narrowest range in estimates being d = 0.37 to 0.26. Meta-analysis and a Bayesian perspective on the results revealed overall support for 2 hypotheses and a lack of support for 3 hypotheses. Overall, practically none of the variability in effect sizes was attributable to the skill of the research team in designing materials, whereas considerable variability was attributable to the hypothesis being tested. In a forecasting survey, predictions of other scientists were significantly correlated with study results, both across and within hypotheses. Crowdsourced testing of research hypotheses helps reveal the true consistency of empirical support for a scientific claim.

The COVID-19 pandemic has increased negative emotions and decreased positive emotions globally. Left unchecked, these emotional changes might have a wide array of adverse impacts. To reduce negative emotions and increase positive emotions, we tested the effectiveness of reappraisal, an emotion regulation strategy which modifies how one thinks about a situation. Participants from 87 countries/regions (N = 21,644) were randomly assigned to one of two brief reappraisal interventions (reconstrual or repurposing) or one of two control conditions (active or passive). Results revealed that both reappraisal interventions (vs. both control conditions) had consistent effects in reducing negative emotions and increasing positive emotions across different measures. Reconstrual and repurposing had similar effects. Importantly, planned exploratory analyses indicated that reappraisal interventions did not reduce intentions to practice preventive health behaviours. The findings demonstrate the viability of creating scalable, low-cost interventions for use around the world to build resilience during the pandemic and beyond.

Contains fulltext : 228242.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) Drawing on the concept of a gale of creative destruction in a capitalistic economy, we argue that initiatives to assess the robustness of findings in the organizational literature should aim to simultaneously test competing ideas operating in the same theoretical space. In other words, replication efforts should seek not just to support or question the original findings, but also to replace them with revised, stronger theories with greater explanatory power. Achieving this will typically require adding new measures, conditions, and subject populations to research designs, in order to carry out conceptual tests of multiple theories in addition to directly replicating the original findings. To illustrate the value of the creative destruction approach for theory pruning in organizational scholarship, we describe recent replication initiatives re-examining culture and work morality, working parents’ reasoning about day care options, and gender discrimination in hiring decisions. Significance statement It is becoming increasingly clear that many, if not most, published research findings across scientific fields are not readily replicable when the same method is repeated. Although extremely valuable, failed replications risk leaving a theoretical void - reducing confidence the original theoretical prediction is true, but not replacing it with positive evidence in favor of an alternative theory. We introduce the creative destruction approach to replication, which combines theory pruning methods from the field of management with emerging best practices from the open science movement, with the aim of making replications as generative as possible. In effect, we advocate for a Replication 2.0 movement in which the goal shifts from checking on the reliability of past findings to actively engaging in competitive theory testing and theory building. The current age is characterized by having too many options. Decision-making is harder when there are numerous options to choose from. However, having a large number of options is not necessarily a problem for everyone and in this context, maximizing and satisficing tendencies are described. Yet, there is a debate about the effect of these tendencies on well-being and it has to be asked as to whether maximizing and satisficing have an adaptive or maladaptive effect on our well-being. Moreover, it raises questions regarding the conceptualization and measurement of maximizing and satisficing tendencies. In a sample of 480 subjects from the general population, a two-component model of maximizing was examined. The results show that the two-component model (maximizing as a strategy and maximizing as a goal) is an efficient way to measure maximizing tendency. The results show that maximizing as a strategy (measured as alternative search) was maladaptive (was positively related to depression and negatively related to happiness), whereas maximizing as a goal (measured as high standards) had no maladaptive effect (was not related to well-being at all). In addition, the two components were differently associated with personality factors which strengthen the need for measuring maximizing as a two-component model. In the current study, it was found that even though great effort was invested in studying maximizing tendency, satisficing tendency stayed behind and its conceptualization and measurement are unclear. Therefore, the (mal)adaptive effect of these tendencies depends on their conceptualization as well as on how these tendencies are measured, and also on their different relationship with personality factors.

Many adolescents feel that their true self is not good enough for others, so may choose to adopt false self behavior. In the context of adolescent development, false self and low self-esteem are risk factors of depression and anxiety. This study aims to analyze relationships among false self, self-esteem, anxiety, and depression, in 134 adolescents. Three hierarchical linear models with moderation effect were tested. Was found that adolescent‘s low self-esteem plays an important role in the manifestation of false-self behavior, and a higher level of anxiety amplify this relationship. The study offer that lower level of anxiety can weaken relationship between low self-esteem and false self, what may play an important role in maladaptive development in adolescents.

PurposeLiving with cancer is associated with experiencing excessive stress which can consequently trigger posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The present paper examines PTSD and its risk factors in cancer survivors.MethodsIn a sample of cancer survivors (N = 216), we tested 3 path models illustrating PTSD development in the context of psychological distress, occurrence of stressful events, personality traits, perceived cognitive impairment, social support, selected sociodemographic variables, and variables related to cancer treatment.Results Two proposed models explained 66% of the PTSD variance and one model explained 73% of the PTSD variance and about one third of the variance of perceived cognitive impairment. Both neuroticism and psychological distress significantly predicted PTSD. Neuroticism predicted PTSD both directly and indirectly via experiencing psychological distress. Particularly, the results suggested that this relationship depends on the time that passed since the person was diagnosed with cancer and also on the history of mental disorders. People lacking social support and those who had a history of mental disorders were significantly more vulnerable to PTSD development.Conclusions The findings depict a possible mechanism of PTSD development taking into account different possible combinations of potential risk factors.Implications for Cancer SurvivorsPTSD can be triggered by many distinct factors. Cancer survivors could benefit from having evidence-based information regarding which conditions can considerably contribute to PTSD development.

Replications in psychological science sometimes fail to reproduce prior findings. If replications use methods that are unfaithful to the original study or ineffective in eliciting the phenomenon of interest, then a failure to replicate may be a failure of the protocol rather than a challenge to the original finding. Formal pre-data collection peer review by experts may address shortcomings and increase replicability rates. We selected 10 replications from the Reproducibility Project: Psychology (RP:P; Open Science Collaboration, 2015) in which the original authors had expressed concerns about the replication designs before data collection and only one of which was “statistically significant” (p < .05). Commenters suggested that lack of adherence to expert review and low-powered tests were the reasons that most of these RP:P studies failed to replicate (Gilbert et al., 2016). We revised the replication protocols and received formal peer review prior to conducting new replications. We administered the RP:P and Revised protocols in multiple laboratories (Median number of laboratories per original study = 6.5; Range 3 to 9; Median total sample = 1279.5; Range 276 to 3512) for high-powered tests of each original finding with both protocols. Overall, Revised protocols produced similar effect sizes as RP:P protocols following the preregistered analysis plan (Δr = .002 or .014, depending on analytic approach). The median effect size for Revised protocols (r = .05) was similar to RP:P protocols (r = .04) and the original RP:P replications (r = .11), and smaller than the original studies (r = .37). The cumulative evidence of original study and three replication attempts suggests that effect sizes for all 10 (median r = .07; range .00 to .15) are 78% smaller on average than original findings (median r = .37; range .19 to .50), with very precisely estimated effects.

Bullying at school negatively affects the class environment as well as all young people who participate in the bullying. One of the most important factors related to bullying is family. In the current study, the effect of family atmosphere and parenting style on different roles in bullying (bullies, victims, defenders) was examined in 155 adolescents (aged 13-15). It was found that the family of bullies had less cohesion and control, more conflicts and fathers who demonstrated desultory parenting. Victims had higher family control, less family cohesion, fewer fathers with positive parenting and slightly higher positive parenting of mothers. Defenders had families with higher expressivity and organization, fewer conflicts, more fathers with positive parenting, fewer fathers with directive parenting and fewer mothers with autonomous parenting. Defenders were also predicted by the hostile parenting of fathers.

Mental simulation theories of language comprehension propose that people automatically create mental representations of real objects. Evidence from sentence-picture verification tasks has shown that people mentally represent various visual properties such as shape, color, and size. However, the evidence for mental simulations of object orientation is limited. We report a study that investigates the match advantage of object orientation across speakers of different languages. This multi-laboratory project aims to achieve two objectives. First, we examine the replicability of the match advantage of object orientation across multiple languages and laboratories. Second, we will use a mental rotation task to measure participants’ mental imagery after the sentence-picture verification task. The relationship between the participants’ performance of the two tasks will provide a cross-linguistic examination of perceptual simulation processes. With the (broad) evaluation of individual mental imagery ability and potential linguistic moderators, we expect a robust estimation of match advantage of object orientation.

Background Experiencing cancer is a highly stressful (traumatic) life-event which can lead to development of PTSD. PTSD can evolve after trauma in predisposed individuals, after being triggered by risk factors. The aim of this paper is to analyze the level of PTSD in patients with cancer in the context of other potential risk factors. Methods Three path models were analyzed in a sample of patients with cancer (N = 216). The models were focused on development of PTSD (PCL-5) in the context of psychological distress (SCL-90), personality traits (EPQ-R), perceived cognitive deficit (FACT-Cog), social support (BSSS), stressful life events, and selected socio-demographic, anamnestic, and medical variables. Mediation and moderation effects were also examined in the tested models. Results Two models explained 63% of the variation in PTSD, while one model explained 60% of the PTSD variation as well as 23% of the variation in perceived cognitive deficits. All 3 models revealed that neuroticism and psychological distress had a statistically significant positive influence on the level of PTSD. In all 3 models, it was found that neuroticism influenced PTSD directly and also indirectly by means of a higher level of psychological distress. Specifically, it was found that this relation depends on the time passed since the patients were diagnosed with cancer and also on the history of mental disorders. In patients with history of mental disorders and in the patients with a lower level of social support, a statistically significant positive influence of stressful life events on PTSD was found. Conclusion The Results draw attention to the possible mechanisms of the PTSD development under different combinations of individual risk factors. These findings offer not only new suggestions for the future research but provide also valuable implications for clinical practice.

The incidence of posttraumatic growth (PTG) has mostly been researched after typical traumatic events such as war, violence, bereavement, vehicle accidents, and so forth. This research has shown that PTG also occurs after cancer. This article presents the results of research which focused on PTG and what was related to its incidence, such as the specific reaction to trauma, among patients with hematological cancer (N = 72). The differences in the levels of PTG were analyzed from the perspective of demographic characteristics, characteristics of the disease, and treatment. PTG was measured using the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory-Czech version (PTGI-CZ). The associated variables were measured using instruments in measuring benefit findings [Benefit Finding Scale for Children-Czech version (BFSC-CZ)], distress tolerance [Distress Tolerance Scale (DTS)], hope [Adult Hope Trait Scale (AHTS)], and optimism [Revised Life Orientation Test (LOT-R)]. Regression analysis found that a higher perception of benefits of the disease (benefit findings) and a greater effort to regulate feelings of distress (distress regulation) explained 67.1 % of the variance of PTG. There were no significant differences in the level of PTG in terms of demographic indicators, type of cancer, current state of disease, or type of treatment. It was found that it was important for patients to perceive that their disease had been beneficial in a certain way. It was also important that patients made a great effort to regulate distress, which can occur when coping with the negative consequences of a disease, and at the same time, it is important for the process of PTG.
