Hot subdwarfs (sdO/B) are the stripped helium cores of red giants formed by binary interactions. Close hot subdwarf binaries with massive white dwarf companions have been proposed as possible progenitors of thermonuclear supernovae type Ia (SN Ia). If the supernova is triggered by stable mass transfer from the helium star, the companion should survive the explosion and should be accelerated to high velocities. The hypervelocity star US 708 is regarded as the prototype for such an ejected companion. To find more of those objects we conducted an extensive spectroscopic survey. Candidates for such fast stars have been selected from the spectroscopic database of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and several ground-based proper motion surveys. Follow-up spectroscopy has been obtained with several 4m- to 10m-class telescopes. Combining the results from quantitative spectroscopic analyses with space-based astrometry from \textit{Gaia} Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) we determined the atmospheric and kinematic parameters of 53 fast hot subdwarf stars. None of these stars is unbound to the Galaxy, although some have Galactic restframe velocities close to the Galactic escape velocity. 21 stars are apparently single objects, which crossed the Galactic disc within their lifetimes in the sdO/B stage and could be regarded as potential candidates for the SN Ia ejection scenario. However, the properties of the full sample are more consistent with a pure old Galactic halo population. We used the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) DR2 photometry in twelve optical bands over 2176 deg2 to estimate the fraction of white dwarfs with presence of CaII H+K absorption along the cooling sequence. We compared the J-PLUS photometry against metal-free theoretical models to estimate the equivalent width in the J0395 passband of 10 nm centered at 395 nm (EW_J0395), a proxy to detect calcium absorption. A total of 4399 white dwarfs within 30000 > Teff > 5500 K and mass M > 0.45 Msun were analyzed. Their EW_J0395 distribution was modeled using two populations, corresponding to polluted and non-polluted systems, to estimate the fraction of calcium white dwarfs (f_Ca) as a function of Teff. The probability for each individual white dwarf of presenting calcium absorption, pca, was also computed. The comparison with both the measured Ca/He abundance and the metal pollution from spectroscopy shows that EW_J0395 correlates with the presence of calcium. The fraction of calcium white dwarfs increases from f_Ca = 0 at Teff = 13500 K to f_Ca = 0.15 at Teff = 5500 K. We compare our results with the fractions derived from the 40 pc spectroscopic sample and from SDSS spectra. The trend found in J-PLUS observations is also present in the 40 pc sample, however SDSS shows a deficit of metal-polluted objects at Teff < 12000 K. Finally, we found 39 white dwarfs with pca > 0.99. Twenty of them have spectra presented in previous studies, whereas we observed six additional targets. These 26 objects were all confirmed as metal-polluted systems. The J-PLUS optical data provide a robust statistical measurement for the presence of CaII H+K absorption in white dwarfs. We find a 15 +- 3 % increase in the fraction of calcium white dwarfs from Teff = 13500 K to 5500 K, which reflects their selection function in the optical from the total population of metal-polluted systems., Comment: Submitted to Astronomy and Astrophysics. White dwarfs with a F, G or K type companion represent the last common ancestor for a plethora of exotic systems throughout the galaxy, though to this point very few of them have been fully characterised in terms of orbital period and component masses, despite the fact several thousand have been identified. Gaia data release 3 has examined many hundreds of thousands of systems, and as such we can use this, in conjunction with our previous UV excess catalogues, to perform spectral energy distribution fitting in order to obtain a sample of 206 binaries likely to contain a white dwarf, complete with orbital periods, and either a direct measurement of the component masses for astrometric systems, or a lower limit on the component masses for spectroscopic systems. Of this sample of 206, four have previously been observed with Hubble Space Telescope spectroscopically in the ultraviolet, which has confirmed the presence of a white dwarf, and we find excellent agreement between the dynamical and spectroscopic masses of the white dwarfs in these systems. We find that white dwarf plus F, G or K binaries can have a wide range of orbital periods, from less than a day to many hundreds of days. A large number of our systems are likely post-stable mass transfer systems based on their mass/period relationships, while others are difficult to explain either via stable mass transfer or standard common envelope evolution., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Aims. Compact white-dwarf binaries are selected from spectra obtained in the early SDSS-V plate program. A dedicated set of SDSS plate observations were carried out in the eFEDS field, providing spectroscopic classifications for a significant fraction of the optically bright end (r < 22.5) of the X-ray sample. The identification and subclassification rests on visual inspections of the SDSS spectra, spectral variability, color-magnitude and color-color diagrams involving optical and X-ray fluxes, optical variability and literature work. Results. Upon visual inspection of SDSS spectra and various auxiliary data products we have identified 26 accreting compact white-dwarf binaries (aCWDBs) in eFEDS, of which 24 are proven X-ray emitters. Among those 26 objects are 12 dwarf novae, three WZ Sge-like disk-accreting non-magnetic CVs with low accretion rates, five likely non-magnetic high accretion rate novalike CVs, two magnetic CVs of the polar subcategory, and three double degenerates (AM CVn objects). Period bouncing candidates and magnetic systems are rarer than expected in this sample, but it is too small for a thorough statistical analysis. Fourteen of the systems are new discoveries, of which five are fainter than the Gaia magnitude limit. Thirteen aCWDBs have measured or estimated orbital periods, of which five were presented here. Through a Zeeman analysis we revise the magnetic field estimate of the polar system J0926+0105, which is likely a low-field polar at B = 16 MG. We quantify the success of X-ray versus optical/UV selection of compact white-dwarf binaries which will be relevant for the full SDSS-V survey. We present a comprehensive overview of a volume-complete sample of white dwarfs located within 40 pc of the Sun, a significant proportion of which were detected in Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3). Our DR3 sample contains 1076 spectroscopically confirmed white dwarfs, with just five candidates within the volume remaining unconfirmed (more than 99 per cent spectroscopic completeness). Additionally, 28 white dwarfs were not in our initial selection from Gaia DR3, most of which are in unresolved binaries. We use Gaia DR3 photometry and astrometry to determine a uniform set of white dwarf parameters, including mass, effective temperature, and cooling age. Magnetic activity and rotation are related to the age of low-mass main sequence stars. To further constrain these relations, we study a sample of 574 main sequence stars members of common proper motion pairs with white dwarfs, identified thanks to Gaia astrometry. We use the white dwarfs as age indicators, while the activity indexes and rotational velocities are obtained from the main sequence companions using standard procedures. We find that stars older than 5 Gyr do not display Halpha nor Caii H&K emission unless they are fast rotators due to tidal locking from the presence of unseen companions and that the rotational velocities tend to decrease over time, thus supporting the so-called gyrochronology. However, we also find moderately old stars (~2-6 Gyr) that are active presumably because they rotate faster than they should for their given ages. This indicates that they may be suffering from weakened magnetic braking or that they possibly evolved through wind accretion processes in the past. The activity fractions that we measure for all stars younger than 5 Gyr range between ~10-40 per cent. This is line with the expectations, since our sample is composed of F, G, K and early M stars, which are thought to have short (<2 Gyr) activity lifetimes. Finally, we observe that the Halpha fractional luminosities and the R'HK indexes for our sample of (slowly rotating) stars show a spread (-4>log(LHalpha/Lbol); log(R'HK)> -5) typically found in inactive M stars or weakly active/inactive F, G, K stars., Comment: Acceted for publication by MNRAS

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) completed its five-month Survey Validation in May 2021. Spectra of stellar and extragalactic targets from Survey Validation constitute the first major data sample from the DESI survey. This paper describes the public release of those spectra, the catalogs of derived properties, and the intermediate data products. In total, the public release includes good-quality spectral information from 466,447 objects targeted as part of the Milky Way Survey, 428,758 as part of the Bright Galaxy Survey, 227,318 as part of the Luminous Red Galaxy sample, 437,664 as part of the Emission Line Galaxy sample, and 76,079 as part of the Quasar sample. In addition, the release includes spectral information from 137,148 objects that expand the scope beyond the primary samples as part of a series of secondary programs. The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) was designed to conduct a survey covering 14,000 deg$^2$ over five years to constrain the cosmic expansion history through precise measurements of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO). The scientific program for DESI was evaluated during a five month Survey Validation (SV) campaign before beginning full operations. This program produced deep spectra of tens of thousands of objects from each of the stellar (MWS), bright galaxy (BGS), luminous red galaxy (LRG), emission line galaxy (ELG), and quasar target classes. These SV spectra were used to optimize redshift distributions, characterize exposure times, determine calibration procedures, and assess observational overheads for the five-year program. In this paper, we present the final target selection algorithms, redshift distributions, and projected cosmology constraints resulting from those studies. We also present a `One-Percent survey' conducted at the conclusion of Survey Validation covering 140 deg$^2$ using the final target selection algorithms with exposures of a depth typical of the main survey. The Survey Validation indicates that DESI will be able to complete the full 14,000 deg$^2$ program with spectroscopically-confirmed targets from the MWS, BGS, LRG, ELG, and quasar programs with total sample sizes of 7.2, 13.8, 7.46, 15.7, and 2.87 million, respectively. These samples will allow exploration of the Milky Way halo, clustering on all scales, and BAO measurements with a statistical precision of 0.28% over the redshift interval $z<1.1$, 0.39% over the redshift interval $1.1

The recently discovered system Gaia 0007-1605 consisting of a white dwarf with a close brown dwarf companion and a distant white dwarf tertiary very much resembles the triple system containing the first transiting planet candidate around a white dwarf ever discovered: WD 1856+534. We have previously argued that the inner binary in WD 1856+534 most likely formed through common envelope evolution but triple star dynamics represent an alternative scenario. Here we analyze different formation scenarios for Gaia 0007-1605. We reconstructed the potential common envelope evolution of the system and find that assuming standard parameters for the energy budget provides a reasonable solution. In agreement with other close white dwarf + brown dwarf binaries, and in contrast to WD 1856+534, no energy sources other than orbital energy during common envelope evolution are required to understand the current configuration of the system. In addition, using analytical prescriptions for triple dynamics, we show that Von Zeipel-Lidov-Kozai oscillations might have trigger tidal migration due to high eccentricity incursions (e \gtrsim 0.997). We conclude that the inner binary in Gaia 0007-1605, as its sibling WD 1856+534, formed either through common envelope evolution, triple dynamics or a combination of both mechanisms., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

Virtually all binaries consisting of a white dwarf with a non-degenerate companion can be classified as either close post-interaction systems (with orbital periods of a few days or less), or wide systems (with periods longer than decades), in which both components have effectively evolved as single stars. Binaries with periods between these two extremes can help constrain common envelope efficiency, or highlight alternative pathways towards the creation of compact binaries. To date such binaries have remained mostly elusive. Here we present three white dwarfs in binaries with evolved subgiant stars with orbital periods of 41, 52 and 461 d. Using Hubble Space Telescope spectroscopy we find that all three systems contain low mass white dwarfs ($\leq$0.4 M$_{\odot}$). One system, TYC 8394$-$1331$-$1, is the inner binary of a hierarchical triple, where the white dwarf plus subgiant binary is orbited by a more distant companion star. These binaries were likely formed from a phase of stable but non-conservative mass transfer, as opposed to common envelope evolution. All three systems will undergo a common envelope phase in the future, but the two shorter period systems are expected to merge during this event, while the longest period system is likely to survive and create a close binary with two low mass white dwarfs., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures. We present a spectroscopic survey of 248 white dwarf candidates within 40 pc of the Sun; of these 244 are in the southern hemisphere. Observations were performed mostly with the Very Large Telescope (X-Shooter) and Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope. Almost all candidates were selected from $\textit{Gaia}$ Data Release 3 (DR3). We find a total of 246 confirmed white dwarfs, 209 of which had no previously published spectra, and two main-sequence star contaminants. Of these, 100 white dwarfs display hydrogen Balmer lines, 69 have featureless spectra, and two show only neutral helium lines. Additionally, 14 white dwarfs display traces of carbon, while 37 have traces of other elements that are heavier than helium. We observe 36 magnetic white dwarfs through the detection of Zeeman splitting of their hydrogen Balmer or metal spectral lines. High spectroscopic completeness (> 97 per cent) has now been reached, such that we have 1058 confirmed $\textit{Gaia}$ DR3 white dwarfs out of 1083 candidates within 40 pc of the Sun at all declinations., Comment: 49 pages, 19 figures. The white dwarf binary pathways survey is dedicated to studying the origin and evolution of binaries containing a white dwarf and an intermediate-mass secondary star of the spectral type A, F, G, or K (WD+AFGK). Here we present CPD-65\,264, a new post common envelope binary with an orbital period of 1.37\,days that contains a massive white dwarf ($ 0.86\pm 0.06\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$) and an intermediate-mass ($1.00\pm0.05\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$) main-sequence secondary star. We characterized the secondary star and measured the orbital period using high-resolution optical spectroscopy. The white dwarf parameters are determined from HST spectroscopy. In addition, TESS observations revealed that up to 19 per cent of the surface of the secondary is covered with starspots. Small period changes found in the light curve indicate that the secondary is the second example of a G-type secondary star in a post-common envelope binary with latitudinal differential rotation. Given the relatively large mass of the white dwarf and the short orbital period, future mass transfer will be dynamically and thermally stable and the system will evolve into a cataclysmic variable. The formation of the system can be understood assuming common envelope evolution without contributions from energy sources besides orbital energy. CPD-65\,264 is the seventh post-common envelope binaries with intermediate-mass secondaries that can be understood assuming a small efficiency in the common envelope energy equation, in agreement with findings for post-common envelope binaries with M-dwarf or sub-stellar companions., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables. The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) has embarked on an ambitious five-year survey to explore the nature of dark energy with spectroscopy of 40 million galaxies and quasars. DESI will determine precise redshifts and employ the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation method to measure distances from the nearby universe to z > 3.5, as well as measure the growth of structure and probe potential modifications to general relativity. In this paper we describe the significant instrumentation we developed for the DESI survey. The new instrumentation includes a wide-field, 3.2-deg diameter prime-focus corrector that focuses the light onto 5020 robotic fiber positioners on the 0.812 m diameter, aspheric focal surface. The positioners and their fibers are divided among ten wedge-shaped petals. Each petal is connected to one of ten spectrographs via a contiguous, high-efficiency, nearly 50 m fiber cable bundle. The ten spectrographs each use a pair of dichroics to split the light into three channels that together record the light from 360 - 980 nm with a resolution of 2000 to 5000. We describe the science requirements, technical requirements on the instrumentation, and management of the project. DESI was installed at the 4-m Mayall telescope at Kitt Peak, and we also describe the facility upgrades to prepare for DESI and the installation and functional verification process. DESI has achieved all of its performance goals, and the DESI survey began in May 2021. Some performance highlights include RMS positioner accuracy better than 0.1", SNR per \sqrt{\AA} > 0.5 for a z > 2 quasar with flux 0.28e-17 erg/s/cm^2/A at 380 nm in 4000s, and median SNR = 7 of the [OII] doublet at 8e-17 erg/s/cm^2 in a 1000s exposure for emission line galaxies at z = 1.4 - 1.6. Binary systems consisting of a white dwarf and a main-sequence companion with orbital periods up to $\approx 100$ d are often thought to be formed through common envelope evolution which is still poorly understood. To provide new observational constraints on the physical processes involved in the formation of these objects, we are conducting a large-scale survey of close binaries consisting of a white dwarf and an A to K-type companion. Here we present three systems with eccentric orbits and orbital periods between $\approx10-42$ d discovered by our survey. Based on HST spectroscopy and high angular resolution images obtained with SPHERE-IRDIS, we find that two of these systems are most likely triple systems while the remaining one could be either a binary or a hierarchical triple but none of them is a post common envelope binary (PCEB). The discovery of these systems shows that our survey is capable to detect systems with orbital periods of the order of weeks, but all six PCEBs we have previously discovered have periods below 2.5 d. We suggest that the fact that all of the systems we identify with periods of the order of weeks are not PCEBs indicates a transition between two different mechanisms responsible for the formation of very close ($\lesssim 10$ d) and somewhat wider WD+AFGK binaries: common envelope evolution and non-conservative stable mass transfer., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables. Establishing a large sample of post common envelope binaries (PCEBs) that consist of a white dwarf plus an intermediate mass companion star of spectral type AFGK, offers the potential to provide new constraints on theoretical models of white dwarf binary formation and evolution. Here we present a detailed analysis of two new systems, TYC 110-755-1 and TYC 3858-1215-1. Based on radial velocity measurements we find the orbital periods of the two systems to be $\sim$ 0.85 and $\sim$ 1.64 days, respectively. In addition, HST spectroscopy of TYC 110-755-1 allowed us to measure the mass of the white dwarf in this system (0.78 M$_\odot$). We furthermore analysed TESS high time resolution photometry and find both secondary stars to be magnetically extremely active. Differences in the photometric and spectroscopic periods of TYC 110-755-1 indicate that the secondary in this system is differentially rotating. Finally, studying the past and future evolution of both systems, we conclude that the common envelope efficiency is likely similar in close white dwarf plus AFGK binaries and PCEBs with M-dwarf companions and find a wide range of possible evolutionary histories for both systems. While TYC 3858-1215-1 will run into dynamically unstable mass transfer that will cause the two stars to merge and evolve into a single white dwarf, TYC 110-755-1 is a progenitor of a cataclysmic variable system with an evolved donor star., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 14 pages, 11 figures

We report on the masses ($M_\mathrm{WD}$), effective temperatures ($T_\mathrm{eff}$) and secular mean accretion rates ($\langle \dot{M} \rangle$) of 43 cataclysmic variable (CV) white dwarfs, 42 of which were obtained from the combined analysis of their $\mathit{Hubble~Space~Telescope}$ ultraviolet data with the parallaxes provided by the Early Third Data Release of the $\mathit{Gaia}$ space mission, and one from the white dwarf gravitational redshift. Our results double the number of CV white dwarfs with an accurate mass measurement, bringing the total census to 89 systems. From the study of the mass distribution, we derive $\langle M_\mathrm{WD} \rangle = 0.81^{+0.16}_{-0.20}\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$, in perfect agreement with previous results, and find no evidence of any evolution of the mass with orbital period. Moreover, we identify five systems with $M_\mathrm{WD} < 0.5\mathrm{M_\odot}$, which are most likely representative of helium-core white dwarfs, showing that these CVs are present in the overall population. We reveal the presence of an anti-correlation between the average accretion rates and the white dwarf masses for the systems below the $2-3\,$h period gap. Since $\langle \dot{M} \rangle$ reflects the rate of system angular momentum loss, this correlation suggests the presence of an additional mechanism of angular momentum loss that is more efficient at low white dwarf masses. This is the fundamental concept of the recently proposed empirical prescription of consequential angular momentum loss (eCAML) and our results provide observational support for it, although we also highlight how its current recipe needs to be refined to better reproduce the observed scatter in $T_\mathrm{eff}$ and $\langle \dot{M} \rangle$, and the presence of helium-core white dwarfs., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 22 pages of main body (6 tables and 14 figures) and 54 pages of appendices. We estimated the spectral evolution of white dwarfs with effective temperature using the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) second data release (DR2), that provides twelve photometric optical passbands over 2176 deg2. We analysed 5926 white dwarfs with r <= 19.5 mag in common between a white dwarf catalog defined from Gaia EDR3 and J-PLUS DR2. We performed a Bayesian analysis by comparing the observed J-PLUS photometry with theoretical models of hydrogen (H) and helium (He) dominated atmospheres. We estimated the PDF for effective temperature (Teff), surface gravity, parallax, and spectral type; and the probability of having a H-dominated atmosphere (pH) for each source. We applied a prior in parallax, using Gaia EDR3 measurements as reference, and derived a self-consistent prior for the atmospheric composition as a function of Teff. We described the fraction of He-dominated atmosphere white dwarfs (fHe) with a linear function of Teff at 5000 < Teff < 30000 K. We found fHe = 0.24 +- 0.01 at Teff = 10000 K, a change rate along the cooling sequence of 0.14 +- 0.02 per 10 kK, and a minimum He-dominated fraction of 0.08 +- 0.02 at the high-temperature end. We tested the obtained pH by comparison with spectroscopic classifications, finding that it is reliable. We estimated the mass distribution for the 351 sources with distance d < 100 pc, mass M > 0.45 Msun, and Teff > 6000 K. The result for H-dominated white dwarfs agrees with previous work, with a dominant M = 0.59 Msun peak and the presence of an excess at M ~ 0.8 Msun. This high-mass excess is absent in the He-dominated distribution, which presents a single peak. The J-PLUS optical data provides a reliable statistical classification of white dwarfs into H- and He-dominated atmospheres. This article reports quasi-continuous transiting events towards WD 1054-226 at d=36.2 pc and V=16.0 mag, based on simultaneous, high-cadence, multi-wavelength imaging photometry using ULTRACAM over 18 nights from 2019 to 2020 March. The predominant period is 25.02 h, and corresponds to a circular orbit with blackbody Teq = 323 K, where a planetary surface can nominally support liquid water. The light curves reveal remarkable night-to-night similarity, with changes on longer timescales, and lack any transit-free segments of unocculted starlight. The most pronounced dimming components occur every 23.1 min -- exactly the 65th harmonic of the fundamental period -- with depths of up to several per cent, and no evident color dependence. Myriad additional harmonics are present, as well as at least two transiting features with independent periods. High-resolution optical spectra are consistent with stable, photospheric absorption by multiple, refractory metal species, with no indication of circumstellar gas. Spitzer observations demonstrate a lack of detectable dust emission, suggesting that the otherwise hidden circumstellar disk orbiting WD 1054-226 may be typical of polluted white dwarfs, and only detected via favorable geometry. Future observations are required to constrain the orbital eccentricity, but even if periastron is near the Roche limit, sublimation cannot drive mass loss in refractory parent bodies, and collisional disintegration is necessary for dust production., Comment: 22 pages, 2 tables, and 15 figures including the appendix, accepted to MNRAS

We present a catalogue of white dwarf candidates selected from Gaia early data release three (EDR3). We applied several selection criteria in absolute magnitude, colour, and Gaia quality flags to remove objects with unreliable measurements while preserving most stars compatible with the white dwarf locus in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We then used a sample of over 30 000 spectroscopically confirmed white dwarfs and contaminants from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to map the distribution of these objects in the Gaia absolute magnitude-colour space. Finally, we adopt the same method presented in our previous Gaia DR2 work to calculate a probability of being a white dwarf (Pwd) for $\simeq$1.3 million sources which passed our quality selection. The Pwd values can be used to select a sample of $\simeq$359 000 high-confidence white dwarf candidates in the magnitude range 8< G <21. We calculated stellar parameters (effective temperature, surface gravity, and mass) for all these stars by fitting Gaia astrometry and photometry with synthetic models. We estimate an upper limit of 93 per cent for the overall completeness of our catalogue for white dwarfs with G $\leq$20 mag and effective temperature (Teff)>7000K, at high Galactic latitudes (|b|>20{\deg}). Alongside the main catalogue we include a reduced-proper-motion extension containing $\simeq$10 200 white dwarf candidates with unreliable parallax measurements which could, however be identified on the basis of their proper motion. The age-metallicity relation is a fundamental tool for constraining the chemical evolution of the Galactic disc. In this work we analyse the observational properties of this relation using binary stars that have not interacted consisting of a white dwarf - from which we can derive the total age of the system - and a main sequence star - from which we can derive the metallicity as traced by the [Fe/H] abundances. Our sample consists of 46 widely separated, but unresolved spectroscopic binaries identified within the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and 189 white dwarf plus main sequence common proper motion pairs identified within the second data release of Gaia. This is currently the largest white dwarf sample for which the metallicity of their progenitors have been determined. We find a flat age-metallicity relation displaying a scatter of [Fe/H] abundances of approximately 0.5 dex around the solar metallicity at all ages. This independently confirms the lack of correlation between age and metallicity in the solar neighbourhood that is found in previous studies focused on analysing single main sequence stars and open clusters., Comment: Accepted for publication by MNRAS

Close white dwarf binaries play an important role across a range of astrophysics, including thermonuclear supernovae, the Galactic low-frequency gravitational wave signal, and the chemical evolution of the Galaxy. Progress in developing a detailed understanding of the complex, multi-threaded evolutionary pathways of these systems is limited by the lack of statistically sound observational constraints on the relative fractions of various sub-populations, and their physical properties. The available samples are small, heterogeneous, and subject to a multitude of observational biases. Our overarching goal is to establish a volume-limited sample of all types of white dwarf binaries that is representative of the underlying population as well as sufficiently large to serve as a benchmark for future binary population models. In this first paper, we provide an overview of the project, and assemble reference samples within a distance limit of 300\,pc of known white dwarf binaries spanning the most common sub-classes: post-common envelope binaries containing a white dwarf plus a main sequence star, cataclysmic variables and double-degenerate binaries. We carefully vet the members of these "Gold" Samples, which span most of the evolutionary parameter space of close white dwarf binary evolution. We also explore the differences between magnitude and volume limited close white dwarf binary samples, and discuss how these systems evolve in their observational properties across the Gaia Hertzsprung-Russell diagram., Comment: Updated following publication in MNRAS. We analysed a wealth of optical spectroscopic and photometric observations of the bright (V=11.9) cataclysmic variable BG Tri. TheGaiaDR2 parallax gives a distance d=334(8)pc to the source, making the object one of the intrinsically brightest nova-like variables seen under a low orbital inclination angle. Time-resolved spectroscopic observations revealed the orbital period of P(orb)=3.h8028(24). Its spectroscopic characteristics resemble RW Sex and similarnova-like variables. We disentangled the H alpha emission line into two components, and show that one component forms on the irradiated face of the secondary star. Light curves of the accreting white dwarf pulsator GW Librae spanning a 7.5 month period in 2017 were obtained as part of the Next Generation Transit Survey. This data set comprises 787 hours of photometry from 148 clear nights, allowing the behaviour of the long (hours) and short period (20min) modulation signals to be tracked from night to night over a much longer observing baseline than has been previously achieved. The long period modulations intermittently detected in previous observations of GW Lib are found to be a persistent feature, evolving between states with periods ~83min and 2-4h on time-scales of several days. The 20min signal is found to have a broadly stable amplitude and frequency for the duration of the campaign, but the previously noted phase instability is confirmed. Ultraviolet observations obtained with the Cosmic Origin Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope constrain the ultraviolet-to-optical flux ratio to ~5 for the 4h modulation, and <=1 for the 20min period, with caveats introduced by non-simultaneous observations. These results add further observational evidence that these enigmatic signals must originate from the white dwarf, highlighting our continued gap in theoretical understanding of the mechanisms that drive them., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 8 pages, 7 figures

Magnitude-limited samples have shown that 20-25 per cent of cataclysmic variables contain white dwarfs with magnetic fields of Mega Gauss strength, in stark contrast to the approximately 5 per cent of single white dwarfs with similar magnetic field strengths. Moreover, the lack of identifiable progenitor systems for magnetic cataclysmic variables leads to considerable challenges when trying to understand how these systems form and evolve. Here we present a sample of six magnetic white dwarfs in detached binaries with low-mass stellar companions where we have constrained the stellar and binary parameters including, for the first time, reliable mass estimates for these magnetic white dwarfs. We find that they are systematically more massive than non-magnetic white dwarfs in detached binaries. These magnetic white dwarfs generally have cooling ages of more than 1 Gyr and reside in systems that are very close to Roche-lobe filling. Our findings are more consistent with these systems being temporarily detached cataclysmic variables, rather than pre-cataclysmic binaries, but we cannot rule out the latter possibility. We find that these systems can display unusual asymmetric light curves that may offer a way to identify them in larger numbers in future. Seven new candidate magnetic white dwarf systems are also presented, three of which have asymmetric light curves. Finally, we note that several newly identified magnetic systems have archival spectra where there is no clear evidence of magnetism, meaning that these binaries have been previously missed. The discovery of a giant planet candidate orbiting the white dwarf WD 1856+534 with an orbital period of 1.4 d poses the questions of how the planet reached its current position. We here reconstruct the evolutionary history of the system assuming common envelope evolution as the main mechanism that brought the planet to its current position. We find that common envelope evolution can explain the present configuration if it was initiated when the host star was on the AGB, the separation of the planet at the onset of mass transfer was in the range 1.69-2.35 au, and if in addition to the orbital energy of the surviving planet either recombination energy stored in the envelope or another source of additional energy contributed to expelling the envelope. We also discuss the evolution of the planet prior to and following common envelope evolution. Finally, we find that if the system formed through common envelope evolution, its total age is in agreement with its membership to the Galactic thin disc. We therefore conclude that common envelope evolution is at least as likely as alternative formation scenarios previously suggested such as planet-planet scattering or Kozai-Lidov oscillations., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables; accepted for publication in MNRAS

In spite of their importance for modern astronomy, we do not fully understand how close binary stars containing at least one white dwarf form from main sequence binary stars. The discovery of EL CVn binaries, close pre-white dwarfs with A/F main sequence star companions, offers now the unique possibility to test models of close compact binary star formation. Binary evolution theories predict that these EL CVn stars descend from very close main sequence binaries with orbital periods shorter than 3 days. If this is correct, nearly all EL CVn stars should be inner binaries of hierarchical triples because more than 95 per cent of very close main sequence binaries (the alleged progenitor systems) are found to be hierarchical triples. We here present SPHERE/IRDIS observations of five EL CVn binaries, finding in all of them tertiary objects, as predicted. We conclude that EL CVn systems are inner binaries of hierarchical triples and indeed descend from very close main sequence binaries that experience stable mass transfer., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures. We present time-resolved optical and ultraviolet spectroscopy and photometry of V1460~Her, an eclipsing cataclysmic variable with a 4.99\,h orbital period and an overluminous K5-type donor star. The optical spectra show emission lines from an accretion disc along with absorption lines from the donor. We use these to measure radial velocities, which, together with constraints upon the orbital inclination from photometry, imply masses of $M_1=0.869\pm0.006\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$ and $M_2=0.295\pm0.004\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$ for the white dwarf and the donor. The radius of the donor, $R_2=0.43\pm0.002\,\mathrm{R}_\odot$, is $\approx 50$ per cent larger than expected given its mass, while its spectral type is much earlier than the M3.5 type that would be expected from a main sequence star with a similar mass. HST spectra show strong $\mathrm{N{\small V}}$ 1240 A emission but no $\mathrm{C{\small IV}}$ 1550 A emission, evidence for CNO-processed material. The donor is therefore a bloated, over-luminous remnant of a thermal-timescale stage of high mass transfer and has yet to re-establish thermal equilibrium. Remarkably, the HST ultraviolet data also show a strong 30 per cent peak-to-peak, $38.9\,$s pulsation that we explain as being due to the spin of the white dwarf, potentially putting V1460 Her in a similar category to the propeller system AE Aqr in terms of its spin frequency and evolutionary path. AE Aqr also features a post-thermal timescale mass donor, and V1460 Her may therefore be its weak magnetic field analogue since the accretion disc is still present, with the white dwarf spin-up a result of a recent high accretion rate.

WASP-98 is a planetary system containing a hot Jupiter transiting a late-G dwarf. A fainter star 12 arcsec distant has previously been identified as a white dwarf, with a distance and proper motion consistent with a physical association with the planetary system. We present spectroscopy of the white dwarf, with the aim of determining its mass, radius and temperature and hence the age of the system. However, the spectra show the featureless continuum and lack of spectral lines characteristic of the DC class of white dwarfs. We therefore fitted theoretical white dwarf spectra to the ugriz apparent magnitudes and Gaia DR2 parallax of this object in order to determine its physical properties and the age of the system. We find that the system is old, with a lower limit of 3.6 Gyr, but theoretical uncertainties preclude a precise determination of its age. Its kinematics are consistent with membership of the thick disc, but do not allow us to rule out the thin-disc alternative. The old age and low metallicity of the system suggest it is subject to an age-metallicity relation, but analysis of the most metal-rich and metal-poor transiting planetary systems yields only insubstantial evidence of this. We conclude that the study of bound white dwarfs can yield independent ages to planetary systems, but such analysis may be better-suited to DA and DB rather than DC white dwarfs., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 7 pages, 1 table, 5 colour figures

We present the discovery of only the third brown dwarf known to eclipse a non-accreting white dwarf. Gaia parallax information and multi-colour photometry confirm that the white dwarf is cool (9950$\pm$150K) and has a low mass (0.45$\pm$0.05~MSun), and spectra and lightcurves suggest the brown dwarf has a mass of 0.067 $\pm$0.006 MSun (70 MJup) and a spectral type of L5 $\pm$1. The kinematics of the system show that the binary is likely to be a member of the thick disk and therefore at least 5 Gyr old. The high cadence lightcurves show that the brown dwarf is inflated, making it the first brown dwarf in an eclipsing white dwarf-brown dwarf binary to be so., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 11 pages, 7 Figures

We present a spectroscopic survey of 230 white dwarf candidates within 40 pc of the Sun from the William Herschel Telescope and Gran Telescopio Canarias. All candidates were selected from $\textit{Gaia}$ Data Release 2 (DR2) and in almost all cases had no prior spectroscopic classifications. We find a total of 191 confirmed white dwarfs and 39 main-sequence star contaminants. The majority of stellar remnants in the sample are relatively cool ($\langle T_{\rm eff} \rangle$ = 6200 K), showing either hydrogen Balmer lines or a featureless spectrum, corresponding to 89 DA and 76 DC white dwarfs, respectively. We also recover two DBA white dwarfs and 9--10 magnetic remnants. We find two carbon-bearing DQ stars and 14 new metal-rich white dwarfs. This includes the possible detection of the first ultra-cool white dwarf with metal lines. We describe three DZ stars for which we find at least four different metal species, including one which is strongly Fe- and Ni-rich, indicative of the accretion of a planetesimal with core-Earth composition. We find one extremely massive (1.31 $\pm$ 0.01 M$_{\odot}$) DA white dwarf showing weak Balmer lines, possibly indicating stellar magnetism. Another white dwarf shows strong Balmer line emission but no infrared excess, suggesting a low-mass sub-stellar companion. High spectroscopic completeness ($>$99%) has now been reached for $\textit{Gaia}$ DR2 sources within 40 pc sample, in the northern hemisphere ($\delta >$ 0 deg) and located on the white dwarf cooling track in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. The White Dwarf Binary Pathways Survey aims at increasing the number of known detached A, F, G and K main sequence stars in close orbits with white dwarf companions (WD+AFGK binaries) to refine our understanding about compact binary evolution and the nature of Supernova Ia progenitors. These close WD+AFGK binary stars are expected to form through common envelope evolution, in which tidal forces tend to circularize the orbit. However, some of the identified WD+AFGK binary candidates show eccentric orbits, indicating that these systems are either formed through a different mechanism or perhaps they are not close WD+AFGK binaries. We observed one of these eccentric WD+AFGK binaries with SPHERE and find that the system TYC 7218-934-1 is in fact a triple system where the WD is a distant companion. The inner binary likely consists of the G-type star plus an unseen low mass companion in an eccentric orbit. Based on this finding, we estimate the fraction of triple systems that could contaminate the WD+AFGK sample. We find that less than 15 per cent of our targets with orbital periods shorter than 100 days might be hierarchical triples., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

We obtained time-resolved optical photometry and spectroscopy of the nova-like variable KR Aurigae in the low state. The spectrum reveals a DAB white dwarf and a mid-M dwarf companion. Using the companion star's $i$-band ellipsoidal modulation we refine the binary orbital period to be $P = 3.906519 \pm 0.000001$ h. The light curve and the spectra show flaring activity due to episodic accretion. One of these events produced brightness oscillations at a period of 27.4 min, that we suggest to be related with the rotation period of a possibly magnetic white dwarf at either 27.4 or 54.8 min. Spectral modelling provided a spectral type of M4-5 for the companion star and $T_{1}=27148 \pm 496$ K, $\log g=8.90 \pm 0.07$, and $\log (\mathrm{He/H})= -0.79^{+0.07}_{-0.08}~~$ for the white dwarf. By simultaneously fitting absorption- and emission-line radial velocity curves and the ellipsoidal light curve, we determined the stellar masses to be $M_1 = 0.94^{+0.15}_{-0.11}~$ $M_\odot$ and $M_2 = 0.37^{+0.07}_{-0.07}~$ $M_\odot$ for the white dwarf and the M-dwarf, respectively, and an orbital inclination of $47^{+1^{\rm o}}_{-2^{\rm o}}$. Finally, we analyse time-resolved spectroscopy acquired when the system was at an $i$-band magnitude of 17.1, about 1.3 mag brighter than it was in the low state. In this intermediate state the line profiles contain an emission S-wave delayed by $\simeq 0.2$ orbital cycle relative to the motion of the white dwarf, similar to what is observed in SW Sextantis stars in the high state., Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS (2020 Feb 19)

The INT Galactic Plane Survey (IGAPS) is the merger of the optical photometric surveys, IPHAS and UVEX, based on data from the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) obtained between 2003 and 2018. Here, we present the IGAPS point source catalogue. It contains 295.4 million rows providing photometry in the filters, i, r, narrow-band Halpha, g and U_RGO. The IGAPS footprint fills the Galactic coordinate range, |b| < 5deg and 30deg < l < 215deg. A uniform calibration, referred to the Pan-STARRS system, is applied to g, r and i, while the Halpha calibration is linked to r and then is reconciled via field overlaps. The astrometry in all 5 bands has been recalculated on the Gaia DR2 frame. Down to i ~ 20 mag (Vega system), most stars are also detected in g, r and Halpha. As exposures in the r band were obtained within the IPHAS and UVEX surveys a few years apart, typically, the catalogue includes two distinct r measures, r_I and r_U. The r 10sigma limiting magnitude is ~21, with median seeing 1.1 arcsec. Between ~13th and ~19th magnitudes in all bands, the photometry is internally reproducible to within 0.02 magnitudes. Stars brighter than r=19.5 have been tested for narrow-band Halpha excess signalling line emission, and for variation exceeding |r_I-r_U| = 0.2 mag. We find and flag 8292 candidate emission line stars and over 53000 variables (both at >5sigma confidence). We report the discovery of a white dwarf exhibiting deep, irregularly shaped transits, indicative of circumstellar planetary debris. Using Zwicky Transient Facility DR2 photometry of ZTF$\,$J013906.17+524536.89 and follow-up observations from the Las Cumbres Observatory, we identify multiple transit events that recur every ${\approx}\,107.2\,$d, much longer than the $4.5{-}4.9\,$h orbital periods observed in WD$\,$1145+017, the only other white dwarf known with transiting planetary debris. The transits vary in both depth and duration, lasting $15{-}25\,$d and reaching $20{-}45\,\%$ dips in flux. Optical spectra reveal strong Balmer lines, identifying the white dwarf as a DA with $T_{\mathrm{eff}}=10{,}530\pm140\,\mathrm{K}$ and $\log(g)=7.86\pm0.06$. A $\mathrm{Ca\,II\,K}$ absorption feature is present in all spectra both in and out of transit. Spectra obtained during one night at roughly $15\,\%$ transit depth show increased $\mathrm{Ca\,II\,K}$ absorption with a model atmospheric fit suggesting $[\mathrm{Ca/H}]=-4.6\pm0.3$, whereas spectra taken on three nights out of transit have $[\mathrm{Ca/H}]$ of -5.5, -5.3, and -4.9 with similar uncertainties. While the $\mathrm{Ca\,II\,K}$ line strength varies by only 2-sigma, we consider a predominantly interstellar origin for Ca absorption unlikely. We suggest a larger column density of circumstellar metallic gas along the line of site or increased accretion of material onto the white dwarf's surface are responsible for the Ca absorption, but further spectroscopic studies are required. We present the first volume-limited sample of cataclysmic variables (CVs), selected using the accurate parallaxes provided by the second data release (DR2) of the ESA $\mathit{Gaia}$ space mission. The sample is composed of 42 CVs within $150\,$pc, including two new systems discovered using the $\mathit{Gaia}$ data, and is $(77 \pm 10)\,$per cent complete. We use this sample to study the intrinsic properties of the Galactic CV population. In particular, the CV space density we derive, $\rho=(4.8^{+0.6}_{-0.8}) \times10^{-6}\,\mathrm{pc}^{-3}$, is lower than predicted by most binary population synthesis studies. We also find a low fraction of period bounce CVs, seven per cent, and an average white dwarf mass of $\langle M_\mathrm{WD} \rangle = (0.83 \pm 0.17)\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$. Both findings confirm previous results, ruling out the presence of observational biases affecting these measurements, as has been suggested in the past. The observed fraction of period bounce CVs falls well below theoretical predictions, by at least a factor of five, and remains one of the open problems in the current understanding of CV evolution. Conversely, the average white dwarf mass supports the presence of additional mechanisms of angular momentum loss that have been accounted for in the latest evolutionary models. The fraction of magnetic CVs in the $150\,$pc sample is remarkably high at $36\,$per cent. This is in striking contrast with the absence of magnetic white dwarfs in the detached population of CV progenitors, and underlines that the evolution of magnetic systems has to be included in the next generation of population models., Comment: Published in MNRAS. We present measurements of the component masses in 15 Cataclysmic Variables (CVs) - 6 new estimates and 9 improved estimates. We provide new calibrations of the relationship between superhump period excess and mass ratio, and use this relation to estimate donor star masses for 225 superhumping CVs. With an increased sample of donor masses we revisit the implications for CV evolution. We confirm the high mass of white dwarfs in CVs, but find no trend in white dwarf mass with orbital period. We argue for a revision in the location of the orbital period minimum of CVs to $79.6 \pm 0.2$ min, significantly shorter than previous estimates. We find that CV donors below the gap have an intrinsic scatter of only 0.005 R$_{\odot}$ around a common evolutionary track, implying a correspondingly small variation in angular momentum loss rates. In contrast to prior studies, we find that standard CV evolutionary tracks - without additional angular momentum loss - are a reasonable fit to the donor masses just below the period gap, but that they do not reproduce the observed period minimum, or fit the donor radii below 0.1 M$_{\odot}$., Comment: 27 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the discovery of three stars that, along with the prototype LP40-365, form a distinct class of chemically peculiar runaway stars that are the survivors of thermonuclear explosions. Spectroscopy of the four confirmed LP 40-365 stars finds ONe-dominated atmospheres enriched with remarkably similar amounts of nuclear ashes of partial O- and Si-burning. Kinematic evidence is consistent with ejection from a binary supernova progenitor; at least two stars have rest-frame velocities indicating they are unbound to the Galaxy. With masses and radii ranging between 0.20-0.28 Msun and 0.16-0.60 Rsun, respectively, we speculate these inflated white dwarfs are the partly burnt remnants of either peculiar Type Iax or electron-capture supernovae. Adopting supernova rates from the literature, we estimate that ~20 LP40-365 stars brighter than 19 mag should be detectable within 2 kpc from the Sun at the end of the Gaia mission. We suggest that as they cool, these stars will evolve in their spectroscopic appearance, and eventually become peculiar O-rich white dwarfs. Finally, we stress that the discovery of new LP40-365 stars will be useful to further constrain their evolution, supplying key boundary conditions to the modelling of explosion mechanisms, supernova rates, and nucleosynthetic yields of peculiar thermonuclear explosions., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures, 6 tables. We present the results of a radial velocity survey of 20 white dwarf plus M dwarf binaries selected as a follow up to a \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} study that aimed to spatially resolve suspected binaries. Our candidates are taken from the list of targets that were spatially unresolved with \textit{Hubble}. We have determined the orbital periods for 16 of these compact binary candidates. The period distribution ranges from 0.14 to 9.16\,d and peaks near 0.6\,d. The original sample therefore contains two sets of binaries, wide orbits ($\approx100-1000$\,au) and close orbits ($\lesssim1-10$\,au), with no systems found in the $\approx10-100$\,au range. This observational evidence confirms the bimodal distribution predicted by population models and is also similar to results obtained in previous studies. We find no binary periods in the months to years range, supporting the post common envelope evolution scenario. One of our targets, WD\,1504+546, was discovered to be an eclipsing binary with a period of 0.93\,d.

We report the discovery of J1953-1019, the first resolved triple white dwarf system. The triplet consists of an inner white dwarf binary and a wider companion. Using Gaia DR2 photometry and astrometry combined with our follow-up spectroscopy, we derive effective temperatures, surface gravities, masses and cooling ages of the three components. All three white dwarfs have pure-hydrogen (DA) atmospheres, masses of 0.60-0.63 Msun and cooling ages of 40-290 Myr. We adopt eight initial-to-final mass relations to estimate the main sequence progenitor masses (which we find to be similar for the three components, 1.6-2.6 Msun) and lifetimes. The differences between the derived cooling times and main sequence lifetimes agree for most of the adopted initial-to-final mass relations, hence the three white dwarfs in J1953-1019 are consistent with coeval evolution. Furthermore, we calculate the projected orbital separations of the inner white dwarf binary (303.25 +- 0.01 au) and of the centre of mass of the inner binary and the outer companion (6398.97 +- 0.09 au). From these values, and taking into account a wide range of possible configurations for the triplet to be currently dynamically stable, we analyse the future evolution of the system. We find that a collision between the two inner white dwarfs due to Lidov-Kozai oscillations is unlikely, though if it occurs it could result in a sub-Chandrasekhar Type Ia supernova explosion., Comment: accepted for publication by MNRAS

We present high-time-resolution photometry and phase-resolved spectroscopy of the short-period ($P_\mathrm{orb} = 80.52\,\mathrm{min}$) cataclysmic variable SDSS J123813.73-033933.0, observed with the $\mathit{Hubble}$ $\mathit{Space}$ $\mathit{Telescope}$ $\mathit{(HST)}$, the $\mathit{Kepler/K2}$ mission and the Very Large Telescope (VLT). We also report observations of the first detected super-outburst. SDSS J1238-0339 shows two types of variability: quasi-regular brightenings recurring every $\simeq 8.5$ h during which the system increases in brightness by $\simeq 0.5$mag, and a double hump quasi-sinusoidal modulation at the orbital period. The detailed $\mathit{K2}$ light curve reveals that the amplitude of the double-humps increases during the brightenings and that their phase undergoes a $\simeq 90^{\circ}$ phase shift with respect to the quiescent intervals. The $\mathit{HST}$ data unambiguously demonstrate that these phenomena both arise from the heating and cooling of two relatively large regions on the white dwarf. We suggest that the double-hump modulation is related to spiral shocks in the accretion disc resulting in an enhanced accretion rate heating two localised regions on the white dwarf, with the structure of the shocks fixed in the binary frame explaining the period of the double humps. The physical origin of the 8.5 h brightenings is less clear. However, the correlation between the observed variations of the amplitude and phase of the double-humps with the occurrence of the brightenings is supportive of an origin in thermal instabilities in the accretion disc., Comment: 26 pages, 22 figures. The infrared dust emission from the white dwarf GD 56 is found to rise and fall by 20% peak-to-peak over 11.2 yr, and is consistent with ongoing dust production and depletion. It is hypothesized that the dust is produced via collisions associated with an evolving dust disk, temporarily increasing the emitting surface of warm debris, and is subsequently destroyed or assimilated within a few years. The variations are consistent with debris that does not change temperature, indicating that dust is produced and depleted within a fixed range of orbital radii. Gas produced in collisions may rapidly re-condense onto grains, or may accrete onto the white dwarf surface on viscous timescales that are considerably longer than Poynting-Robertson drag for micron-sized dust. This potential delay in mass accretion rate change is consistent with multi-epoch spectra of the unchanging Ca II and Mg II absorption features in GD 56 over 15 yr, although the sampling is sparse. Overall these results indicate that collisions are likely to be the source of dust and gas, either inferred or observed, orbiting most or all polluted white dwarfs., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, and 2 tables. The most heavily polluted white dwarfs often show excess infrared radiation from circumstellar dust disks, which are modeled as a result of tidal disruption of extrasolar minor planets. Interaction of dust, gas, and disintegrating objects can all contribute to the dynamical evolution of these dust disks. Here, we report on two infrared variable dusty white dwarfs, SDSS J1228+1040 and G29-38. For SDSS J1228+1040, compared to the first measurements in 2007, the IRAC [3.6] and [4.5] fluxes decreased by 20% by 2014 to a level also seen in the recent 2018 observations. For G29-38, the infrared flux of the 10 $\mu$m silicate emission feature became 10% stronger between 2004 and 2007, We explore several scenarios that could account for these changes, including tidal disruption events, perturbation from a companion, and runaway accretion. No satisfactory causes are found for the flux drop in SDSS J1228+1040 due to the limited time coverage. Continuous tidal disruption of small planetesimals could increase the mass of small grains and concurrently change the strength of the 10 $\mu$m feature of G29-38. Dust disks around white dwarfs are actively evolving and we speculate that there could be different mechanisms responsible for the temporal changes of these disks., Comment: ApJ, in press

M dwarfs are prime targets in the hunt for habitable worlds around other stars. This is due to their abundance as well as their small radii and low masses and temperatures, which facilitate the detection of temperate, rocky planets in orbit around them. However, the fundamental properties of M dwarfs are difficult to constrain, often limiting our ability to characterise the planets they host. Here we test several theoretical relationships for M dwarfs by measuring 23 high precision, model-independent masses and radii for M dwarfs in binaries with white dwarfs. We find a large scatter in the radii of these low-mass stars, with 25 per cent having radii consistent with theoretical models while the rest are up to 12 per cent over-inflated. This scatter is seen in both partially- and fully-convective M dwarfs. No clear trend is seen between the over-inflation and age or metallicity, but there are indications that the radii of slowly rotating M dwarfs are more consistent with predictions, albeit with a similar amount of scatter in the measurements compared to more rapidly rotating M dwarfs. The sample of M dwarfs in close binaries with white dwarfs appears indistinguishable from other M dwarf samples, implying that common envelope evolution has a negligible impact on their structure. We conclude that theoretical and empirical mass-radius relationships lack the precision and accuracy required to measure the fundamental parameters of M dwarfs well enough to determine the internal structure and bulk composition of the planets they host., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

WD 1145+017 is currently the only white dwarf known to exhibit periodic transits of planetary debris as well as absorption lines from circumstellar gas. We present the first simultaneous fast optical spectrophotometry and broad-band photometry of the system, obtained with the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) and the Liverpool Telescope (LT), respectively. The observations spanned $5.5$ h, somewhat longer than the $4.5$-h orbital period of the debris. Dividing the GTC spectrophotometry into five wavelength bands reveals no significant colour differences, confirming grey transits in the optical. We argue that absorption by an optically thick structure is a plausible alternative explanation for the achromatic nature of the transits that can allow the presence of small-sized ($\sim\mu$m) particles. The longest ($87$ min) and deepest ($50$ per cent attenuation) transit recorded in our data exhibits a complex structure around minimum light that can be well modelled by multiple overlapping dust clouds. The strongest circumstellar absorption line, Fe II $\lambda$5169, significantly weakens during this transit, with its equivalent width reducing from a mean out-of-transit value of $2$ \AA\ to $1$ \AA\ in-transit, supporting spatial correlation between the circumstellar gas and dust. Finally, we made use of the Gaia Data Release 2 and archival photometry to determine the white dwarf parameters. Adopting a helium-dominated atmosphere containing traces of hydrogen and metals, and a reddening $E(B-V)=0.01$ we find $T_\mathrm{eff}=15\,020 \pm 520$ K, $\log g=8.07\pm0.07$, corresponding to $M_\mathrm{WD}=0.63\pm0.05\ \mbox{$\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$}$ and a cooling age of $224\pm30$ Myr., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (2018 Aug 22)

Using Gaia DR2 data, we present an up-to-date sample of white dwarfs within 20 pc of the Sun. In total we identified 139 systems in Gaia DR2, nine of which are new detections, with the closest of these located at a distance of 13.05 pc. We estimated atmospheric parameters for all stellar remnants based on the Gaia parallaxes and photometry. The high precision and completeness of the Gaia astrometry allowed us to search for wide binary companions. We re-identified all known binaries where both components have accurate DR2 astrometry, and established the binarity of one of the nine newly identified white dwarfs. No new companions were found to previously known 20 pc white dwarfs. Finally, we estimated the local white dwarf space-density to be $(4.49\pm0.38)\times10^{-3}$ pc$^{-3}$, having given careful consideration to the distance-dependent Gaia completeness, which misses known objects at short distances, but is close to complete for white dwarfs near 20 pc., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

LP 40-365 (aka GD 492) is a nearby low-luminosity hyper-runaway star with an extremely unusual atmospheric composition, which has been proposed as the remnant of a white dwarf that survived a subluminous Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) in a single-degenerate scenario. Adopting the Gaia Data Release (DR2) parallax, 1.58 +/- 0.03 mas, we estimate a radius of 0.18 +/- 0.01 Rsun, confirming LP 40-365 as a subluminous star that is ~ 15 times larger than a typical white dwarf and is compatible with the SN Ia remnant scenario. We present an updated kinematic analysis, making use of the Gaia parallax and proper motion, and confirm that Lp 40-365 is leaving the Milky Way at about 1.5 times the escape velocity of the Solar neighbourhood with a rest-frame velocity of 852 +/- 10 km/s. Integrating the past trajectories of LP 40-365, we confirm it crossed the Galactic disc 5.0 +/- 0.3 Myr ago in the direction of Carina, likely coming from beneath the plane. Finally, we estimate that LP 40-365 was ejected from its progenitor binary with a velocity of at least 600 km/s, which is compatible with theoretical predictions for close binaries containing a white dwarf and a helium-star donor., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. The recently discovered hypervelocity white dwarf LP 40-65 (aka GD 492) has been suggested as the outcome of the failed disruption of a white dwarf in a sub-luminous Type Ia supernova (SN Ia). We present new observations confirming GD 492 as a single star with unique spectral features. Our spectroscopic analysis suggests that a helium-dominated atmosphere, with ~ 33 percent neon and 2 percent oxygen by mass, can reproduce most of the observed properties of this highly unusual star. Although our atmospheric model contrasts with the previous analysis in terms of dominant atmospheric species, we confirm that the atmosphere of GD 492 is strongly hydrogen deficient, log(H/He) < -5, and displays traces of eleven other alpha- and iron-group elements (with sulfur, chromium, manganese, and titanium as new detections), indicating nuclear processing of carbon and silicon. We measure a manganese-to-iron ratio seven times larger than Solar. While the observed abundances of GD 492 do not fully match any predicted nuclear yields of a partially-burned supernova remnant, the manganese excess strongly favors a link with a single-degenerate SN Ia event over alternative scenarios., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables. AR Scorpii is unique amongst known white dwarf binaries in showing powerful pulsations extending to radio frequencies. Here we aim to investigate the multi-frequency radio emission of AR Sco in detail, in order to constrain its origin and emission mechanisms. We present interferometric radio frequency imaging of AR Sco at 1.5, 5 and 9 GHz, analysing the total flux and polarization behaviour of this source at high time resolution (10, 3 and 3 s), across a full 3.6 hr orbital period in each band. We find strong modulation of the radio flux on the orbital period and the orbital sideband of the white dwarf's spin period (also known as the "beat" period). This indicates that, like the optical flux, the radio flux arises predominantly from on or near the inner surface of the M-dwarf companion star. The beat-phase pulsations of AR Sco decrease in strength with decreasing frequency. They are strongest at 9 GHz and at an orbital phase ~0.5. Unlike the optical emission from this source, radio emission from AR Sco shows weak linear polarization but very strong circular polarization, reaching ~30% at an orbital phase ~0.8. We infer the probable existence of a non-relativistic cyclotron emission component, which dominates at low radio frequencies. This paper reports circular spectropolarimetry and X-ray observations of several polluted white dwarfs including WD 1145+017, with the aim to constrain the behavior of disk material and instantaneous accretion rates in these evolved planetary systems. Two stars with previously observed Zeeman splitting, WD 0322-019 and WD 2105-820, are detected above 5 sigma and > 1 kG, while WD 1145+017, WD 1929+011, and WD 2326+049 yield (null) detections below this minimum level of confidence. For these latter three stars, high-resolution spectra and atmospheric modeling are used to obtain limits on magnetic field strengths via the absence of Zeeman splitting, finding B* < 20 kG based on data with resolving power R near 40 000. An analytical framework is presented for bulk Earth composition material falling onto the magnetic polar regions of white dwarfs, where X-rays and cyclotron radiation may contribute to accretion luminosity. This analysis is applied to X-ray data for WD 1145+017, WD 1729+371, and WD 2326+049, and the upper bound count rates are modeled with spectra for a range of plasma kT = 1 - 10 keV in both the magnetic and non-magnetic accretion regimes. The results for all three stars are consistent with a typical dusty white dwarf in a steady-state at 1e8 - 1e9 g/s. In particular, the non-magnetic limits for WD 1145+017 are found to be well below previous estimates of up to 1e12 g/s, and likely below 1e10 g/s, thus suggesting the star-disk system may be average in its evolutionary state, and only special in viewing geometry., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables; accepted to MNRAS

We present photometry and spectroscopy for 27 pulsating hydrogen-atmosphere white dwarfs (DAVs, a.k.a. ZZ Ceti stars) observed by the Kepler space telescope up to K2 Campaign 8, an extensive compilation of observations with unprecedented duration (>75 days) and duty cycle (>90%). The space-based photometry reveals pulsation properties previously inaccessible to ground-based observations. We observe a sharp dichotomy in oscillation mode linewidths at roughly 800 s, such that white dwarf pulsations with periods exceeding 800 s have substantially broader mode linewidths, more reminiscent of a damped harmonic oscillator than a heat-driven pulsator. Extended Kepler coverage also permits extensive mode identification: We identify the spherical degree of 61 out of 154 unique radial orders, providing direct constraints of the rotation period for 20 of these 27 DAVs, more than doubling the number of white dwarfs with rotation periods determined via asteroseismology. We also obtain spectroscopy from 4m-class telescopes for all DAVs with Kepler photometry. Using these homogeneously analyzed spectra we estimate the overall mass of all 27 DAVs, which allows us to measure white dwarf rotation as a function of mass, constraining the endpoints of angular momentum in low- and intermediate-mass stars. We find that 0.51-to-0.73-solar-mass white dwarfs, which evolved from 1.7-to-3.0-solar-mass ZAMS progenitors, have a mean rotation period of 35 hr with a standard deviation of 28 hr, with notable exceptions for higher-mass white dwarfs.
