However, it is unclear how stroke survivors might stave off IADL issues. Studies indicating that sleep has restorative neurological effects provide potential mechanisms to address issues with IADL. The aim of this study was to ascertain the association between sleep duration (short or long sleep duration) and IADL among stroke survivors and those without a stroke history.Methods: Data of 486,619 participants were analyzed from the 2000 to 2015 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), a nationally representative sample. Measures of self-reported stroke, sociodemographic variables, sleep duration, and IADL problems were collected. Binary logistic regression was utilized to analyze the relationship of short (≤6 hours) and long (≥9 hours) sleep duration with limitations to IADL.Results: Of the sample, 3% reported a physician-diagnosed stroke event. The mean age was 45.73 years; 52.7% were female; 77.4% were White; 14.2% were Black; 41.3% were married, 62.7% were employed; 31.1% reported that annual family income was less than $35,000; 87% reported good-to-excellent health; and 29.7% reported short sleep (≤6 hours). Approximately 30% of stroke survivors reported IADL problems, and 34.4% who reported IADL problems were short sleepers. Abstract

Chemical equilibrium has proven extremely useful to predict the chemical composition of AGB atmospheres. Here we use a recently developed code and an updated thermochemical database, including gaseous and condensed species involving 34 elements, to compute the chemical equilibrium composition of AGB atmospheres of M-, S-, and C-type stars. We include for the first time TixCy clusters, with x = 1-4 and y = 1-4, and selected larger clusters ranging up to Ti13C22, for which thermochemical data is obtained from quantum chemical calculations. We find that in general chemical equilibrium reproduces well the observed abundances of parent molecules in circumstellar envelopes of AGB stars. There are however severe discrepancies, of various orders of magnitude, for some parent molecules: HCN, CS, NH3, and SO2 in M-type stars, H2O and NH3 in S-type stars, and the hydrides H2O, NH3, SiH4, and PH3 in C-type stars. Several molecules not yet observed in AGB atmospheres, like SiC5, SiNH, SiCl, PS, HBO, and the metal-containing molecules MgS, CaS, CaOH, CaCl, CaF, ScO, ZrO, VO, FeS, CoH, and NiS, are good candidates for detection with observatories like ALMA. The first condensates predicted are carbon, TiC, and SiC in C-rich atmospheres and Al2O3 in O-rich outflows. The most probable gas-phase precursors of dust are acetylene, atomic carbon, and/or C3 for carbon dust, SiC2 and Si2C for SiC dust, and atomic Al and AlOH, AlO, and Al2O for Al2O3 dust. In the case of TiC dust, atomic Ti is probably the main supplier of titanium. However, chemical equilibrium predicts that clusters like Ti8C12 and Ti13C22 become the major reservoirs of titanium at the expense of atomic Ti in the region where condensation of TiC is expected to occur, suggesting that the assembly of large TixCy clusters could be related to the formation of the first condensation nuclei of TiC., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. Abstract

The white paper discusses Arecibo Observatory's plan for facility improvements and activities over the next decade. The facility improvements include: (a) improving the telescope surface, pointing and focusing to achieve superb performance up to ~12.5 GHz; (b) equip the telescope with ultrawide-band feeds; (c) upgrade the instrumentation with a 4 GHz bandwidth high dynamic range digital link and a universal backend and (d) augment the VLBI facility by integrating the 12m telescope for phase referencing. These upgrades to the Arecibo telescope are critical to keep the national facility in the forefront of research in radio astronomy while maintaining its dominance in radar studies of near-Earth asteroids, planets and satellites. In the next decade, the Arecibo telescope will play a synergistic role with the upcoming facilities such as ngVLA, SKA and the now commissioned FAST telescope. 10. Reversible Graphene decoupling by NaCl photo-dissociation

Abstract

We describe the reversible intercalation of Na under graphene on Ir(111) by photo-dissociation of a previously adsorbed NaCl overlayer. After room temperature evaporation, NaCl adsorbs on top of graphene forming a bilayer. With a combination of electron diffraction and photoemission techniques we demonstrate that the NaCl overlayer dissociates upon a short exposure to an X-ray beam. As a result, chlorine desorbs while sodium intercalates under the graphene, inducing an electronic decoupling from the underlying metal. Low energy electron diffraction shows the disappearance of the moir\'e pattern when Na intercalates between graphene and iridium. Analysis of the Na 2p core-level by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows a chemical change from NaCl to metallic buried Na at the graphene/Ir interface. The intercalation-decoupling process leads to a n-doped graphene due to the charge transfer from the Na, as revealed by constant energy angle resolved X-ray photoemission maps. Moreover, the process is reversible by a mild annealing of the samples without damaging the graphene.

Abstract

We report on a comparative structural characterization of two types of high quality epitaxial graphene layers grown by CVD on 4H-SiC(0001). The layers under study are a single layer graphene on top of a buffer layer and a quasi-free-standing graphene obtained by intercalation of hydrogen underneath the buffer layer. We determine the morphology and structure of both layers by different complementary in-situ and ex-situ surface techniques. We found the existence of large islands in both samples but with different size distribution. Photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) measurements were performed to get information about the chemical environment of the different regions. The study reveals that monolayer graphene prevails in most of the surface terraces, while a bilayer and trilayer graphene presence is observed at the steps, stripes along steps and islands., Comment: This manuscript version is made available under the CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0 license, http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/

Abstract

We present a proof of concept on the coupling of radio astronomical receivers and spectrometers with chemical reactorsand the performances of the resulting setup for spectroscopy and chemical simulations in laboratory astrophysics. Several experiments including cold plasma generation and UV photochemistry were performed in a 40\,cm long gas cell placed in the beam path of the Aries 40\,m radio telescope receivers operating in the 41-49 GHz frequency range interfaced with fast Fourier transform spectrometers providing 2 GHz bandwidth and 38 kHz resolution. The impedance matching of the cell windows has been studied using different materials. The choice of the material and its thickness was critical to obtain a sensitivity identical to that of standard radio astronomical observations. Spectroscopic signals arising from very low partial pressures of CH3OH, CH3CH2OH, HCOOH, OCS,CS, SO2 (<1E-03 mbar) were detected in a few seconds. Fast data acquisition was achieved allowing for kinetic measurements in fragmentation experiments using electron impact or UV irradiation. Time evolution of chemical reactions involving OCS, O2 and CS2 was also observed demonstrating that reactive species, such as CS, can be maintained with high abundance in the gas phase during these experiments., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics in September 21, 2017. 16 pages, 18 figures

Abstract

Linear carbon chains are common in various types of astronomical molecular sources. Possible formation mechanisms involve both bottom-up and top-down routes. We have carried out a combined observational and modeling study of the formation of carbon chains in the C-star envelope IRC+10216, where the polymerization of acetylene and hydrogen cyanide induced by ultraviolet photons can drive the formation of linear carbon chains of increasing length. We have used ALMA to map the emission of 3 mm rotational lines of the hydrocarbon radicals C2H, C4H, and C6H, and the CN-containing species CN, C3N, HC3N, and HC5N with an angular resolution of 1". The spatial distribution of all these species is a hollow, 5-10" wide, spherical shell located at a radius of 10-20" from the star, with no appreciable emission close to the star. Our observations resolve the broad shell of carbon chains into thinner sub-shells which are 1-2" wide and not fully concentric, indicating that the mass loss process has been discontinuous and not fully isotropic. The radial distributions of the species mapped reveal subtle differences: while the hydrocarbon radicals have very similar radial distributions, the CN-containing species show more diverse distributions, with HC3N appearing earlier in the expansion and the radical CN extending later than the rest of the species. The observed morphology can be rationalized by a chemical model in which the growth of polyynes is mainly produced by rapid gas-phase chemical reactions of C2H and C4H radicals with unsaturated hydrocarbons, while cyanopolyynes are mainly formed from polyynes in gas-phase reactions with CN and C3N radicals., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

The redundancy allocation problem is formulated minimizing the design cost for a series-parallel system with multiple component choices whereas ensuring a given system reliability level. The obtained model is a nonlinear integer programming problem with a non linear, non separable constraint. We propose an algebraic method, based on Gr\"obner bases, to obtain the exact solution of the problem. Abstract

NO molecules adsorbed on a Pt(111) surface from dipping in an acidic nitrite solution are studied by near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) techniques. LEED patterns and STM images show that no long range ordered structures are formed after NO adsorption on a Pt(111) surface. Although the total NO coverage is very low, spectroscopic features in N K-edge and O K-edge absorption spectra have been singled out and related to the different species induced by this preparation method. From these measurements it is concluded that the NO molecule is adsorbed trough the N atom in an upright conformation. The maximum saturation coverage is about 0.3 monolayers, and although nitric oxide is the major component, nitrite and nitrogen species are slightly co-adsorbed on the surface. The results obtained from this study are compared with those previously reported in the literature for NO adsorbed on Pt(111) under UHV conditions.

Abstract

Let $O_X$ (resp. $D_X$) be the sheaf of holomorphic functions (resp. the sheaf of linear differential operators with holomorphic coefficients) on $X$ (=the complex affine n-space). Let $Y$ be a locally weakly quasi-homogeneous free divisor defined by a polynomial $f$. In this paper we prove that, locally, the annihilating ideal of $1/f^k$ over $D_X$ is generated by linear differential operators of order 1 (for $k$ big enough). For this purpose we prove a vanishing theorem for the extension groups of a certain logarithmic $D_X$--module with $O_X$. The logarithmic $D_X$--module is naturally associated with $Y$. Abstract

The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) Technical Group on Marine Litter developed the on monitoring of marine litter in European s in 2013 to enable EU Member States to launch monitoring programmes for MSFD Descriptor 10: no harm caused by marine litter . The maturity of methodological protocols for marine litter monitoring has increased over the last 10 years, based on research advances and M efforts.This document updates the previous guidance to facilitate the harmonisation of the monitoring framework for the MSFD, including protocols, recommendations, and information required to increase the comparability of data and assessments among Member States. The document comprises chapters dedicated to the protocols for monitoring marine litter across different marine environmental compartments (i.e. the coastline/beach, the surface layer of the water column, the seafloor/seabed) and types of litter (i.e. macro litter, mesolitter, microlitter, ingested litter and microlitter by biota, and entanglement with litter).

Abstract

Marine diazotrophs convert dinitrogen (N2) gas into bioavailable nitrogen (N), supporting life in the global ocean. In 2012, the first version of the global oceanic diazotroph database (version 1) was published. Here, we present an updated version of the database (version 2), significantly increasing the number of in situ diazotrophic measurements from 13 565 to 55 286. Data points for N2 fixation rates, diazotrophic cell abundance, and nifH gene copy abundance have increased by 184 %, 86 %, and 809 %, respectively. Version 2 includes two new data sheets for the nifH gene copy abundance of non-cyanobacterial diazotrophs and cell-specific N2 fixation rates. The measurements of N2 fixation rates approximately follow a log-normal distribution in both version 1 and version 2. However, version 2 considerably extends both the left and right tails of the distribution. Consequently, when estimating global oceanic N2 fixation rates using the geometric means of different ocean basins, version 1 and version 2 yield similar rates (43–57 versus 45–63 Tg N yr−1; ranges based on one geometric standard error). In contrast, when using arithmetic means, version 2 suggests a significantly higher rate of 223 ± 30 Tg N yr−1 (mean ± standard error; same hereafter) compared to version 1 (74 ± 7 Tg N yr−1). Specifically, substantial rate increases are estimated for the South Pacific Ocean (88 ± 23 versus 20 ± 2 Tg N yr−1), primarily driven by measurements in the southwestern subtropics, and for the North Atlantic Ocean (40 ± 9 versus 10 ± 2 Tg N yr−1). Moreover, version 2 estimates the N2 fixation rate in the Indian Ocean to be 35 ± 14 Tg N yr−1, which could not be estimated using version 1 due to limited data availability. Furthermore, a comparison of N2 fixation rates obtained through different measurement methods at the same months, locations, and depths reveals that the conventional 15N2 bubble method yields lower rates in 69 % cases compared to the new 15N2 dissolution method. Abstract

Resumen Garantizar y promover la sostenibilidad ambiental es uno de los principales objetivos de la Agenda 2030 para el Desarrollo Sostenible. Sin embargo, factores tales como actividades extractivas, culturales e incluso el cambio climático, resultan las principales causas de presión que determinan el estado en que se encuentra el territorio. Es importante disponer de herramientas que nos informen sobre el grado de consecución de los objetivos planteados, así como en la identificación de los impactos y sus consecuencias para así poder realizar una gestión que mantenga o incremente la biodiversidad y demás recursos del área. En un área protegida del suroeste de la península Ibérica, en la que tuvo lugar una importante actividad minera, hemos analizado la variación de un índice de vegetación (NDVI) y las variaciones climáticas como herramientas para una gestión sostenible. Los resultados muestran el impacto que la actividad extractiva y las variaciones climáticas han ocasionado en los recursos y por tanto, en los servicios ecosistémicos asociados al territorio. Las herramientas propuestas se han mostrado rápidas y precisas para la toma de decisiones y su aplicación en otras áreas puede servir de modelo para la consecución de los objetivos de la Agenda 2030.

Abstract

OBJECTIVES: HIV outcomes centre primarily around clinical markers with limited focus on patient-reported outcomes. With a global trend towards capturing the outcomes that matter most to patients, there is agreement that standardizing the definition of value in HIV care is key to their incorporation. This study aims to address the lack of routine, standardized data in HIV care. METHODS: An international working group (WG) of 37 experts and patients, and a steering group (SG) of 18 experts were convened from 14 countries. The project team (PT) identified outcomes by conducting a literature review, screening 1979 articles and reviewing the full texts of 547 of these articles. Semi-structured interviews and advisory groups were performed with the WG, SG and people living with HIV to add to the list of potentially relevant outcomes. The WG voted via a modified Delphi process - informed by six Zoom calls - to establish a core set of outcomes for use in clinical practice. RESULTS: From 156 identified outcomes, consensus was reached to include three patient-reported outcomes, four clinician-reported measures and one administratively reported outcome; standardized measures were included. The WG also reached agreement to measure 22 risk-adjustment variables. This outcome set can be applied to any person living with HIV aged > 18 years. CONCLUSIONS: Adoption of the HIV360 outcome set will enable healthcare providers to record, compare and integrate standardized metrics across treatment sites to drive quality improvement in HIV care.

This report collates the main results delivered in the frame of the CleanAtlantic project, Work package 5.2. Monitoring the presence of marine litter in the marine environment. Abstract

Floating marine litter is a recurrent pollutant in the Atlantic and worldwide oceans which has attracted increasing attention in the latest years. Meso- and microplastics derived from industrial pellets or through debris degradation have been also reported in surface and subsurface water samples from Atlantic coast and high-seas. The need of microplastic monitoring and assessment in EU countries and the Atlantic Area calls for the establishment of standardized sampling protocols and methods. In this work, the application of manta-trawl for micro-litter monitoring in coastal and offshore waters of the Galician coast (NW Spain) was assessed. The results obtained in this work suggest a moderate micro-litter density in both coastal and offshore stations. Also, manta-trawl was proved to be a feasible tool for surface and subsurface meso and micro-litter collection.

Twitter, with more than 330 million monthly active users worldwide, is an invaluable source for studying environmental and social concerns. Here, we present an exploratory data analysis of a one-year (July 20- July 21) dataset of ~132K tweets containing the words ‘plastic’ or ‘microplastic’ in reference to the marine environment. Abstract

One of the wide spread aquatic organisms in the rivers and estuaries ecosystems in the World is Asian clam Corbicula fluminea. The exotic clam is an invasive species that can adapt to environmental changes, also it was adopted as a model to toxicity tests. The study evaluated the effects of the exposure to cadmium and microplastics their mixtures on Corbicula fluminea, oxidative stress responses, lipid peroxidation, changed the activity of energy-related enzymes and neurotoxicity on the gill, the digestive gland and the gonad. The results of this study show that Cd, MPs and their mixtures cause oxidative stress and damage and neurotoxicity. The enzymes superoxide dismutase, glutathione S-transferase, acetylcholinesterase and the measure of LPO levels could be chosen as biomarker of Cd pollution. With MPs conditions increased levels of GSH/GSSG ratio and AChE are highly correlated. The combination of Cd and MPs exposure caused a synergetic effect in gill and gonad, while an antagonism response was recorded in digestive gland. The results provide new insights for unveiling the biologic effects of heavy metal, microplastics and their mixtures on Corbicula fluminea.
