This survey focuses on the economic studies of international trade in agricultural and food products that has been an expanding area of specialisation in the agricultural economics profession in Europe since 1984. The contributions of agricultural economists have been particularly significant in Europe by assessing (i) the compatibility of agricultural policies with the multilateral trade rules and (ii) the macroeconomic impacts of agricultural trade agreements on Northern agricultures and on market access of developed and developing countries. Recent developments have shifted the focus of the international trade from countries and food industries towards food firms and products. The future research agenda will be driven by the needs of policy makers to find solutions to new and pressing issues and in particular growing societal concerns over the environmental, public health, diet composition, animal welfare and climate impacts of food production, and re-emerging food security concerns for developing countries., Gaigné Carl, Laroche-Dupraz Catherine, Matthews Alan. - Abstract
Livestock production is a sector of major economic importance that defines many European rural areas. It has become the focus of controversy over the past decade or more, particularly with regard to the environmental impacts it causes. In this context, it seemed useful to support this debate with a critical review of the state of scientific knowledge on the role, impacts, and services – environmental, economic, and social – associated with European livestock production. Accordingly, the French

[Departement_IRSTEA]Territoires [TR1_IRSTEA]DTAM [Axe_IRSTEA]DTAM1-REPRO [Axe_IRSTEA]DTAM2-ACPUB [Axe_IRSTEA]DTAM-QT2-ADAPTATION; National audience; Ageing is now one of the most significant issues in rural settings and this paper seeks to provide an overview of its under-explored economic, social and political consequences. This multidisciplinary approach offers a variety of scenarios regarding the changes taking place in rural areas and provides a basis for considering the ageing of country populations and territories in terms of fresh potential for economic and social development.; Alors que le vieillissement constitue l’un des phénomènes les plus marquants affectant les espaces ruraux, ses conséquences économiques, sociales et politiques encore peu explorées, sont envisagées dans cette contribution de synthèse.

JEL Classification: F3, R30, R12, O33; Although economic historians consider technical change as being a significant factor explaining the evolution of the spatial organization of an economy, economic geography still fails to address this important issue. By developing a simple two-region general equilibrium model under monopolistic competition, we show that agglomeration is triggered by technological progress shifting production towards more skill intensive techniques.

CB 009613 JEL F12; F16; R12; We study the impact of falling international trade costs and falling national transport costs on the economic geography of countries involved in an integration process. Each country is formed by two regions between which labor is mobile, whereas there is no international mobility. Goods can be traded both nationally and internationally at positive, but different, costs. A decrease in trade costs and/or in transport costs has a direct impact on prices and wages in both countries. This allows us to account for the impact of changes in these parameters on the economic geography and welfare of each country. We show that, as trade barriers fall, the benefits of integration come after its costs. We also show that national transport policies are of the beggar-thy-neighbour type. On both counts, policy coordination is required in the process of economic integration.

Classification JEL : F12, F16, R12; We study the impacts of changes in international trade and domestic transport costs on the internal geography of countries in the presence of geographical asymmetries. To do so, we develop a two-country four-region model in which one country has a region that exhibits a ‘geographical advantage’ in terms of better access to the other country’s markets. Our analysis reveals that, in equilibrium, the space-economies of the trading partners are interdependent and that agglomeration in one country reduces the occurrence of agglomeration in the other, thus showing that physical geography suffices to build strong connections between the two space-economies. We also show that remoteness need not be a geographical disadvantage since a landlocked region may well be the location that attracts the larger share of firms. This is so when internal transport costs are high and, therefore, act as a barrier to competition from abroad.
