Abstract

Spin polarization in chiral molecules is a magnetic molecular response associated with electron transport and enantioselective bond polarization that occurs even in the absence of an external magnetic field. An unexpected finding by Santos and co-workers reported enantiospecific NMR responses in solid-state cross-polarization (CP) experiments, suggesting a possible additional contribution to the indirect nuclear spin-spin coupling in chiral molecules induced by bond polarization in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. Herein we provide a theoretical treatment for this phenomenon, presenting an effective spin-Hamiltonian for helical molecules like DNA and density functional theory (DFT) results on amino acids that confirm the dependence of J-couplings on the choice of enantiomer. The connection between nuclear spin dynamics and chirality could offer insights for molecular sensing and quantum information sciences. Abstract

Achieving a long-lived reversed magnetic shear (RMS) target plasma in the National Spherical Torus eXperiment Upgrade will require developing various sustainment scenarios. To help with the ongoing plasma control efforts, the development of a new analysis for the motional Stark effect (MSE) diagnostic using a machine learning algorithm, namely, MSE-ML, is described. MSE-ML will be used to identify patterns during RMS discharges, some of which suffer magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) events resulting in current redistribution and monotonic q-profiles. A database consisting of q and magnetic shear profiles is being constructed primarily based on the existing National Spherical Torus eXperiment data with equilibrium reconstructions constrained by the magnetic field pitch angle profile measured using the multi-channel MSE diagnostic. An unsupervised k-means clustering of the data is developed to study the RMS formation as a function of time. The initial clustering from the q-profiles shows significant differences in both amplitude and the duration of the RMS period. As a goal, the clustering results that detect and distinguish shots with substantial and sustained RMS are to be used as a preprocessing step in a supervised algorithm to identify the underlying conditions that lead to long-lasting improved confinement with RMS. Another aim of the MSE-ML study is to identify precursors of RMS-destroying MHD events in either derived data such as the q-profile or directly measured data such as the magnetic field pitch angle profile. Abstract

Motional Stark effect polarimetry is a key diagnostic for plasma fusion research since its usage on PBX-M. The MSE diagnostic measures the radial magnetic pitch angle profile in a plasma from a neutral beam by observation of Stark split D-alpha emission from atoms excited by collision with ions and electrons in the plasma. The pitch angle measurement is used with equilibrium reconstruction codes to determine the q-profile for studies of plasma stability, confinement, and transport. Historically, the algorithm was used in a post-processing fashion. The goal of our work was to apply this method in real time and pass the results to the plasma control system computer for real-time equilibrium reconstruction and control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

8. Designing ITER motional Stark effect line shift (MSE-LS) spectrometers.

Abstract

As a part of ITER beam aided diagnostics, the design of Motional Stark Effect (MSE) diagnostic observing the emission from the Balmer-α line is underway. The physics of Stark splitting shows that the Stark manifold is polarization dependent, and the energy splitting results in a line shift proportional to the electric field. Due to the challenges of maintaining the calibration of the plasma facing mirrors in ITER, the conventional MSE polarimetry measurement technique is replaced with a spectral approach that is deemed more favorable in the ITER environment. The MSE line shift (LS) diagnostic is designed to quantify the Lorentz electric field magnitude by measuring the Stark manifold using visible spectroscopy. In the presence of large magnetic fields and high energy heating beams of 1 MeV, the expected Stark splitting is much larger than in typical devices. The MSE-LS design has unique challenges requiring careful consideration and modeling of its viewing geometry and photon budget. The MSE-LS approach on ITER is promising but has stringent demands on the allowable errors for the statistical and systematic fitting uncertainties. In this study, a full system model and numerical simulations of data for each sightline are completed. For a range of optical transmission fractions, photon noise analysis is conducted to determine the statistical uncertainties. This provides guidance on the spectrometer throughput, dispersion at the detector, optics, and other design choices. 9. The motional Stark effect diagnostic for ITER.

Abstract

An overview of the plans for the motional Stark effect (MSE) diagnostic installation on the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) is presented. The MSE diagnostic uniquely provides spatially localized magnetic field measurements inside the plasma. These are used to constrain equilibrium reconstructions to determine q(r), the safety factor as a function of minor radius. Meeting the system requirements to deliver q-profiles and related quantities with the specified radial resolution of 20 points over the minor radius, 10 ms time resolution, and better than 10% accuracy is challenging. MSE systems observe the D/H-α emission near 656.3 nm from neutral beams. As the beam atoms traverse the magnetic field, B ⃗ , at high velocity, v ⃗ , they experience a Lorentz electric field, v ⃗ × B ⃗ , which causes the spectral emission to be split and polarized due to the Stark effect. Traditional MSE-LP (line polarization) measurements determine the direction of the magnetic field in the observation volume using polarimetric analysis of the detected light. The harsh conditions of ITER are expected to deposit thin films of contaminants on the first mirror, which would alter the polarization state of reflected light significantly. On ITER, the combination of high magnetic field strength and high energy beams makes the Stark spectrum resolution suitable for the determination of the magnetic field magnitude from the line shift, so this approach has been selected. Every aspect of the measurement system must be planned for the burning plasma environment and carefully analyzed ahead of time. Current status and plans for the system are presented. Abstract

In the reset process of phase-change memories, the active material is brought rapidly above its melting temperature by Joule heating. Atomic migration in the liquid state due to the high electric field can lead to alloy demixing and eventually to device failure. The electromigration force F responsible for ionic migration is proportional to the electric field E, via the effective charge Z∗ (F = eZ*E, where e is electron charge). The determination of Z∗ is thus of great relevance for the electrothermal modeling of devices. We show that a direct first-principles calculation of the effective charges in metallic liquids is possible by computing the atomic forces in the presence of both an electric field and an electronic current within a nonequilibrium Green's function method based on density functional theory. We present results on the effective charges for GeTe and Sb2Te3 in their liquid state obtained with a calculation including wind forces.

Abstract

Environmental enrichment may slow cognitive decay possibly acting through an improvement in vascular function. Aim of the study was to assess the effects of a 7-month cognitive, social, and physical training program on cognitive and vascular function in patients with mild cognitive impairment. In a single-center, randomized, parallel-group study, 113 patients (age, 65–89 years) were randomized to multidomain training (n=55) or usual care (n=58). All participants underwent neuropsychological tests and vascular evaluation, including brachial artery flow-mediated dilation, carotid–femoral pulse wave velocity, carotid distensibility, and assessment of circulating hematopoietic CD34+ and endothelial progenitor cells. At study entry, an age-matched control group (n=45) was also studied. Compared with controls, patients had at study entry a reduced flow-mediated dilation (2.97±2.14% versus 3.73±2.06%; P =0.03) and hyperemic stimulus (shear rate area under the curve, 19.1±15.7 versus 25.7±15.1×10 −3 ; P =0.009); only the latter remained significant after adjustment for confounders ( P =0.03). Training improved Alzheimer disease assessment scale cognitive (training, 14.0±4.8 to 13.1±5.5; nontraining, 12.1±3.9 to 13.2±4.8; P for interaction visit×training=0.02), flow-mediated dilation (2.82±2.19% to 3.40±1.81%, 3.05±2.08% to 2.24±1.59%; P =0.006; P =0.023 after adjustment for diameter and shear rate area under the curve), and circulating hematopoietic CD34 + cells and prevented the decline in carotid distensibility (18.4±5.3 to 20.0±6.6, 23.9±11.0 to 19.5±7.1 Pa −1 ; P =0.005). The only clinical predictor of improvement of cognitive function after training was established hypertension. There was no correlation between changes in measures of cognitive and vascular function. In conclusion, a multidomain training program slows cognitive decline, especially in hypertensive individuals. This effect is accompanied by improved systemic endothelial function, mobilization of progenitor CD34 + cells, and preserved carotid distensibility. Abstract

Vitamin B12, folate, and homocysteine are implicated in pivotal neurodegenerative mechanisms and partake in elders' mental decline. Findings on the association between vitamin-related biochemistry and cognitive abilities suggest that the structural and functional properties of the brain may represent an intermediate biomarker linking vitamin concentrations to cognition. Despite this, no previous study directly investigated whether vitamin B12, folate, and homocysteine levels are sufficient to explain individual neuropsychological profiles or, alternatively, whether the activity of brain regions modulated by these compounds better predicts cognition in elders. Here, we measured the relationship between vitamin blood concentrations, scores at seventeen neuropsychological tests, and brain activity of sixty-five elders spanning from normal to Mild Cognitive Impairment. We then evaluated whether task-related brain responses represent an intermediate phenotype, providing a better prediction of subjects' neuropsychological scores, as compared to the one obtained considering blood biochemistry only. We found that the hemodynamic activity of the right dorsal anterior cingulate cortex was positively associated (p value < 0 05 cluster corrected) with vitamin B12 concentrations, suggesting that elders with higher B12 levels had a more pronounced recruitment of this salience network region. Crucially, the activity of this area significantly predicted subjects' visual search and attention abilities (p value = 0 0023), whereas B12 levels per se failed to do so. Our results demonstrate that the relationship between blood biochemistry and elders' cognitive abilities is revealed when brain activity is included into the equation, thus highlighting the role of brain imaging as intermediate phenotype. Abstract

L10 FePt is a technologically important material for a range of novel data storage applications. In the ordered FePt structure the normally nonmagnetic Pt ion acquires a magnetic moment, which depends on the local field originating from the neighboring Fe atoms. In this work a model of FePt is constructed in which the induced Pt moment is simulated by using combined longitudinal and rotational spin dynamics. The model is parameterized to include a linear variation of the moment with the exchange field, so that at the Pt site the magnetic moment depends on the Fe ordering. The Curie temperature of FePt is calculated and agrees well with similar models that incorporate the Pt dynamics through an effective Fe-only Hamiltonian. By computing the dynamic correlation function the anisotropy field and the Gilbert damping are extracted over a range of temperatures. The anisotropy exhibits a power-law dependence on the magnetization with exponent n≈2.1. This agrees well with what was observed experimentally, and it is obtained without including a two-ion anisotropy term as in other approaches. Our work shows that incorporating longitudinal fluctuations into spin dynamics calculations is crucial for understanding the properties of materials with induced moments.

30. Nontrivial spatial dependence of the spin torques in L10 FePt-based tunneling junctions

Abstract

We present an ab initio study of the spin-transfer torque in Fe/MgO/FePt/Fe magnetic tunnel junctions. We consider an FePt film with a thickness up to six unit cells, either in direct contact with the MgO spacer or with an intercalated ultrathin Fe seed layer. We find that in the FePt layer the torque is not attenuated as strongly as in the case of pure Fe. Moreover, in FePt the torque alternates sign at the Fe and Pt atomic planes throughout the stack for all FePt thicknesses considered. Finally, when Fe is intercalated between MgO and L10 FePt, the torque is sharply attenuated, and it is transferred to FePt only for an Fe seed layer that is less than two atomic planes thick. We attribute these features to the different spatial profiles of the exchange and correlation field and the induced nonequilibrium spin accumulation. The calculated tunneling magnetoresistance of the Fe/MgO/FePt/Fe junctions studied is enhanced with respect to the one of Fe/MgO/Fe, while it is reduced with Fe intercalation. Our work shows that L10 FePt junctions can be promising candidates for current-operated magnetic devices and that the magnetic texture at the atomic scale has an important effect on the spin-transfer torque.

Abstract

An overview of recent results from the MST reversed field pinch programme is presented. With neutral beam injection, bursty energetic particle (EP) modes are observed. The profiles of the magnetic and density fluctuations associated with these EP modes are measured using a far infrared interferometer-polarimeter. Equilibrium reconstructions of the quasi-single-helicity 3D helical state are provided by the V3FIT code that now incorporates several of MST's advanced diagnostics. The orientation of the helical structure is controlled using a new resonant magnetic perturbation technique. Gyrokinetic simulations based on experimental equilibria predict unstable trapped-electron modes (TEMs), and small-scale density fluctuations are detected in improved-confinement plasmas with TEM-like features. Upgraded pellet injection permits study of density and beta limits over MST's full range of operation, and an MST-record line-average density of 0.9 ×1020 m3 (n/nG = 1.4) has been obtained. Impurity ion temperature measurements reveal a charge-to-mass-ratio dependence in the rapid heating that occurs during a sawtooth crash. Runaway of NBI-born fast ions during the impulsive sawtooth event agrees with test-particle theory. Magnetic self-organization studies include measurements of the dynamo emf with an applied ac inductive electric field using oscillating field current drive.

Abstract

A study was undertaken to determine the resources available in Italian hospitals for the control of nosocomial infections and the factors favouring a successful approach. During January-May 2000 a questionnaire about infection control was sent to the hospital health director of all Italian National Health System hospitals treating acute patients and with more than 3500 admissions in 1999. An active programme was defined as a hospital infection control committee (HICC) meeting at least four times in 1999, the presence of a doctor with infection control responsibilities, a nurse employed in infection control and at least one surveillance activity and one infection control guideline issued or updated in the past two years. There was a response rate of 87.5% (463/529). Almost fifteen percent (69/463) of hospitals had an active programme for Infection Control and 76.2% (353/463) had a HICC. Seventy-one percent (330/463) of the hospitals had a hospital infection control physician and 53% (250/463) had infection control nurses. Fifty-two percent (242/463) reported at least one surveillance activity and 70.8% (328/463) had issued or updated at least one guidance document in the last two years. The presence of regional policies [odds ratio (OR) 8.7], operative groups (OR 4.2), at least one full-time nurse (OR 4.6) and a hospital annual plan which specified infection control (OR 2.1) were statistically associated with an active programme in the multivariate analysis.

Abstract

Age-related cognitive impairment and dementia are an increasing societal burden. Epidemiological studies indicate that lifestyle factors, e.g. physical, cognitive and social activities, correlate with reduced dementia risk; moreover, positive effects on cognition of physical/cognitive training have been found in cognitively unimpaired elders. Less is known about effectiveness and action mechanisms of physical/cognitive training in elders already suffering from Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), a population at high risk for dementia. We assessed in 113 MCI subjects aged 65-89 years, the efficacy of combined physical-cognitive training on cognitive decline, Gray Matter (GM) volume loss and Cerebral Blood Flow (CBF) in hippocampus and parahippocampal areas, and on brain-blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) activity elicited by a cognitive task, measured by ADAS-Cog scale, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Arterial Spin Labeling (ASL) and fMRI, respectively, before and after 7 months of training vs. usual life. Cognitive status significantly decreased in MCI-no training and significantly increased in MCI-training subjects; training increased parahippocampal CBF, but no effect on GM volume loss was evident; BOLD activity increase, indicative of neural efficiency decline, was found only in MCI-no training subjects. These results show that a non pharmacological, multicomponent intervention improves cognitive status and indicators of brain health in MCI subjects.

Abstract

Following the introduction, Chapter 2 provides an overview of mitigation in the forest sector, addressing the handling of forests under UNFCCC. Chapters 3 to 5 focus on forest-based mitigation options – afforestation, reforestation, REDD+ and forest management – and Chapters 6 and 7 focus on wood-product based options – wood energy and green building and furnishing. The publication describes these activities in the context of UNFCCC rules, assessing their mitigation potential and economic attrac tiveness as well as opportunities and challenges for implementation. Chapter 8 discusses the different considerations involved in choosing the right mix of options as well as some of the instruments and means for implementation. Chapter 8 also highlights the co-benefits generated by forest-based mitigation and emphasizes that economic assessment of mitigation options needs to take these benefits into account. The concluding chapter assesses national commitments under UNFCCC involving forest miti gation and summarizes the challenges and opportunities.

Abstract

Background and Purpose: Sustainability, sustainable development and sustainable forest management are terms that are commonly, and interchangeably used in the forest industry, however their meaning take on different connotations, relative to varying subject matter. The aim of this paper is to look at these terms in a more comprehensive way, relative to the current ideology of sustainability in forestry. Materials and Methods: This paper applies a literature review of the concepts of: i) sustainable development; ii) sustainable forest management; and iii) economic and non-economic valuation. The concepts are viewed through a historical dimension of shifting paradigms, originating from production- to service-based forestry. Values are discussed through a review of general value theory and spatial, cultural and temporal differences in valuation. Along the evolution of these concepts, we discuss their applicability as frameworks to develop operational guidelines for forest management, relative to the multi-functionality of forests. Results and Conclusions: Potential discrepancies between the conceptual origins of sustainable development and sustainable forest management are highlighted, relative to how they have been interpreted and diffused as new perceptions on forest value for the human society. We infer the current paradigm may not reflect the various dimensions adequately as its implementation is likely to be more related to the distribution of power between stakeholders, rather than the value stakeholders’ place on the various forest attributes
