1. First experimental time-of-flight-based proton radiography using low gain avalanche diodes

Abstract: Ion computed tomography (iCT) is an imaging modality for the direct determination of the relative stopping power (RSP) distribution within a patient's body. Usually, this is done by estimating the path and energy loss of ions traversing the scanned volume via a tracking system and a separate residual energy detector. This study, on the other hand, introduces the first experimental study of a novel iCT approach based on time-of-flight (TOF) measurements, the so-called Sandwich TOF-iCT concept, which in contrast to any other iCT system, does not require a residual energy detector for the RSP determination. A small TOF-iCT demonstrator was built based on low gain avalanche diodes (LGAD), which are 4D-tracking detectors that allow to simultaneously measure the particle position and time-of-arrival with a precision better than 100um and 100ps, respectively. Using this demonstrator, the material and energy-dependent TOF was measured for several homogeneous PMMA slabs in order to calibrate the acquired TOF against the corresponding water equivalent thickness (WET). With this calibration, two proton radiographs (pRad) of a small aluminium stair phantom were recorded at MedAustron using 83 and 100.4MeV protons. Due to the simplified WET calibration models used in this very first experimental study of this novel approach, the difference between the measured and theoretical WET ranged between 37.09 and 51.12%. Nevertheless, the first TOF-based pRad was successfully recorded showing that LGADs are suitable detector candidates for TOF-iCT. While the system parameters and WET estimation algorithms require further optimization, this work was an important first step to realize Sandwich TOF-iCT. 2. Polarization of Thermal Dilepton Radiation

Abstract: The spectra of dileptons radiated from the fireballs formed in high-energy heavy-ion collisions have been successfully used to investigate key properties of hot and dense QCD matter. In this paper we study polarization observables which have thus far received little attention. Microscopic calculations of in-medium electromagnetic spectral functions have thus far mostly focused on integrated yields which are proportional to the sum of the longitudinal and transverse components of the virtual photon's selfenergy. Photon polarization results from the difference of these components, which in general does not vanish for lepton pairs at finite three-momentum relative to the heat bath (and is maximal for fully transverse real photons). Using a model that successfully describes dilepton spectra in heavy-ion collisions, with hadronic emission via medium-modified vector mesons and quark-antiquark annihilation constrained by lattice QCD, we compute polarization observables in different dilepton mass bins and confront them with data of the HADES and NA60 experiments., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: It is demonstrated that the presence of a phase transition in heavy-ion collisions, at beam energies that probe dense quantum chromodynamics (QCD) matter, leads to a significant enhancement of the dilepton yield at low invariant mass and requires the embedding of low beam energies per produced pion due to the extended emission time. In addition, the temperature of low-mass dileptons shows a modest decrease due to the mixed phase. The emission of dileptons in the SIS18-SIS100 beam energy range is studied by augmenting the ultra-relativistic quantum molecular dynamics (UrQMD) transport model with a realistic density-dependent equation of state, as well as two different phase transitions. This is achieved by extending the molecular dynamics interaction part of the UrQMD model to a density-dependent interaction potential with a high-density minimum, leading to a phase transition and metastable coexisting high-density states. Together with a high-precision measurement, these simulations will be able to constrain the existence of a phase transition in QCD up to densities of several times nuclear saturation density.

Abstract: The nuclear equation of state (EOS) is at the center of numerous theoretical and experimental efforts in nuclear physics. With advances in microscopic theories for nuclear interactions, the availability of experiments probing nuclear matter under conditions not reached before, endeavors to develop sophisticated and reliable transport simulations to interpret these experiments, and the advent of multi-messenger astronomy, the next decade will bring new opportunities for determining the nuclear matter EOS, elucidating its dependence on density, temperature, and isospin asymmetry. Among controlled terrestrial experiments, collisions of heavy nuclei at intermediate beam energies (from a few tens of MeV/nucleon to about 25 GeV/nucleon in the fixed-target frame) probe the widest ranges of baryon density and temperature, enabling studies of nuclear matter from a few tenths to about 5 times the nuclear saturation density and for temperatures from a few to well above a hundred MeV, respectively. Collisions of neutron-rich isotopes further bring the opportunity to probe effects due to the isospin asymmetry. However, capitalizing on the enormous scientific effort aimed at uncovering the dense nuclear matter EOS, both at RHIC and at FRIB as well as at other international facilities, depends on the continued development of state-of-the-art hadronic transport simulations. Abstract: Phase transitions in a non-perturbative regime can be studied by ab initio Lattice Field Theory methods. The status and future research directions for LFT investigations of Quantum Chromo-Dynamics under extreme conditions are reviewed, including properties of hadrons and of the hypothesized QCD axion as inferred from QCD topology in different phases. We discuss phase transitions in strong interactions in an extended parameter space, and the possibility of model building for Dark Matter and Electro-Weak Symmetry Breaking. 6. Spheroidal expansion and freeze-out geometry of heavy-ion collisions in the few-GeV energy regime

Abstract: A spheroidal model of the expansion of hadronic matter produced in heavy-ion collisions in the few-GeV energy regime is proposed. It constitutes an extension of the spherically symmetric Siemens-Rasmussen blast-wave model used in our previous works. The spheroidal form of the expansion, combined with a single-freeze-out scenario, allows for a significantly improved description of both the transverse-mass and the rapidity distributions of the produced particles. With the model parameters determined by the hadronic abundances and spectra, we make further predictions of the pion HBT correlation radii that turn out to be in a qualitative agreement with the measured ones. The overall successful description of the data supports the concept of spheroidal symmetry of the produced hadronic systems in this energy range.

8. Role of baryon resonances in the $\pi^-p \to ne^+e^-$ reaction within an effective-Lagrangian model

Abstract: We present a study of the reaction $\pi^-p \to ne^+e^-$ for $\sqrt{s}=1.49\,\textrm{GeV}$, including non-resonant Born terms and contributions of the $N(1440)$, $N(1520)$, $N(1535)$ resonances ($R$), using an effective-Lagrangian model, which we extended by a phenomenological phase factor at the $RN\rho$ vertex function. We give predictions for both the differential cross section $d\sigma/dm$ and the spin density matrix elements of the virtual photon that decays into the lepton pair. 9. Dilepton Signature of a First-Order Phase Transition

Abstract: The search for a first-order phase transition in strongly interacting matter is one of the major objectives in the exploration of the phase diagram of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). In the present work we investigate dilepton radiation from the hot and dense fireballs created in Au-Au collisions at projectile energies of 1-2 $A$GeV for potential signatures of a first-order transition. Toward this end, we employ a hydrodynamic simulation with two different equations of state, with and without a phase transition. The latter is constrained by susceptibilities at vanishing chemical potential from lattice-QCD as well as neutron star properties, while the former is implemented via modification of the mean-fields in the quark phase. We find that the latent heat involved in the first-order transition leads to a substantial increase in the low-mass thermal emission signal, by about a factor of two above the cross-over scenario., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: Multi-differential measurements of dilepton spectra serve as a unique tool to characterize the properties of matter in the interior of the hot and dense fireball created in heavy-ion collisions. An important property of virtual photons is their spin polarization defined in the rest frame of the virtual photon with respect to a chosen quantization axis. Microscopic calculations of in-medium electromagnetic spectral functions have mostly focused on integrated yields which are proportional to the sum of the longitudinal and transverse components of the virtual photon’s self-energy, while photon polarization results from the difference of these components. As the processes that drive the medium effects in the spectral function change with invariant mass and momentum, this becomes a powerful tool for studying the medium composition. We present the polarization observables of thermal virtual photons as a function of mass and momentum and confront the results with existing measurements from HADES and NA60.

11. An iterative method to estimate the combinatorial background

Abstract: The reconstruction of broad resonances is important for understanding the dynamics of heavy ion collisions. However, large combinatorial background makes this objective very challenging. In this work an innovative iterative method which identifies signal and background contributions without input models for normalization constants is presented. This technique is successfully validated on a simulated thermal cocktail of resonances. This demonstrates that the iterative procedure is a powerful tool to reconstruct multi-differentially inclusive resonant signals in high multiplicity events as produced in heavy ion collisions.

12. Thermal dileptons as QCD matter probes at SIS

Abstract: Electromagnetic radiation is emitted during the whole course of a heavy-ion collision and can escape from the collision zone without further interactions. This makes it an ideal tool to study the properties of hot and dense QCD matter. To model the space-time evolution of the collision at SIS energies a coarse-graining approach is used to convert transport simulations into meaningful temperatures and densities. These parameters serve as input for the determination of the pertinent radiation of thermal dileptons based on an in-medium $\rho$ spectral function that describes available spectra at ultrarelativistic collision energies. 13. Thermal Dileptons from Coarse-Grained Transport as Fireball Probes at SIS Energies

Abstract: Utilizing a coarse-graining method to convert hadronic transport simulations of Au+Au collisions at SIS energies into local temperature, baryon and pion densities, we compute the pertinent radiation of thermal dileptons based on an in-medium $\rho$ spectral function that describes available spectra at ultrarelativistic collision energies. In particular, we analyze how far the resulting yields and slopes of the invariant-mass spectra can probe the lifetime and temperatures of the fireball. We find that dilepton radiation sets in after the initial overlap phase of the colliding nuclei of about 7 fm/c, and lasts for about 13 fm/c. This duration closely coincides with the development of the transverse collectivity of the baryons, thus establishing a direct correlation between hadronic collective effects and thermal EM radiation, and supporting a near local equilibration of the system. This fireball "lifetime" is substantially smaller than the typical 20-30 fm/c that naive considerations of the density evolution alone would suggest. We furthermore find that the total dilepton yield radiated into the invariant-mass window of $M=0.3-0.7$ GeV/$c^{2}$, normalized to the number of charged pions, follows a relation to the lifetime found earlier in the (ultra-) relativistic regime of heavy-ion collisions, and thus corroborates the versatility of this tool. The spectral slopes of the invariant-mass spectra above the $\phi$ mass provide a thermometer of the hottest phases of the collision, and agree well with the maximal temperatures extracted from the coarse-grained hadron spectra., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures; v2: extended discussion, matches the version accepted for publication

Abstract: In the energy domain of 1-2 GeV per nucleon, HADES has measured rare penetrating probes (e+e-) in C+C, Ar+KCl, d+p, p+p and p+Nb collisions. For the first time the electron pairs were reconstructed from quasi-free n+p sub-reactions by detecting the proton spectator from the deuteron breakup. An experimentally constrained NN reference spectrum was established. Our results demonstrate that the gross features of di-electron spectra in C+C collisions can be explained as a superposition of independent NN collisions. On the other hand, a direct comparison of the NN reference spectrum with the e+e- invariant mass distribution measured in the heavier system Ar+KCl at 1.76 GeV/u shows an excess yield above the reference, which we attribute to radiation from resonance matter. Abstract: In March 2019 the HADES experiment recorded 14 billion Ag+Ag collisions at √sNN = 2.55 GeV as a part of the FAIR phase-0 physics program. In this contribution, we present and investigate our capabilities to reconstruct and analyze weakly decaying strange hadrons and hypernuclei emerging from these collisions. The focus is put on measuring the mean lifetimes of these particles.

19. Thermal model description of the particle spectra in the few-GeV energy regime

Abstract: It has been demonstrated that Statistical Hadronization Model fits perfectly to particle yields at freeze-out in heavy-ion and hadron collisions at LHC, RHIC and SPS, where quark-gluon plasma is created. It is however entirely not clear if particles emitted in the few-GeV energy regime can be understood as emerging from thermalized hadronic medium. Our recent work suggests that this might be the case. By implementing appropriate fireball geometry and expansion pattern in the THERMINATOR (THERMal heavy IoN generATOR) it was possible to describe not only yields, but also the spectra of most abundant particles measured at GSI SIS18. Most of the latter are pure prediction of the model. We present details of the model and extended comparison with experimental data and discuss further developments.

Abstract: Phase transitions in a non-perturbative regime can be studied by ab initio Lattice Field Theory methods. The status and future research directions for LFT investigations of Quantum Chromo-Dynamics under extreme conditions are reviewed, including properties of hadrons and of the hypothesized QCD axion as inferred from QCD topology in different phases. We discuss phase transitions in strong interactions in an extended parameter space, and the possibility of model building for Dark Matter and Electro-Weak Symmetry Breaking. Methodological challenges are addressed as well, including new developments in Artificial Intelligence geared towards the identification of different phases and transitions.

Abstract: In high-energy heavy-ion collisions, partonic collectivity is evidenced by the constituent quark number scaling of elliptic flow anisotropy for identified hadrons. A breaking of this scaling and dominance of baryonic interactions is found for identified hadron collective flow measurements in √sNN = 3 GeV Au+Au collisions. In this paper, we report measurements of the first- and second-order azimuthal anisotropic parameters, v1 and v2, of light nuclei (d, t, 3He, 4He) produced in √sNN = 3 GeV Au+Au collisions at the STAR experiment. An atomic mass number scaling is found in the measured v1 slopes of light nuclei at mid-rapidity. For the measured v2 magnitude, a strong rapidity dependence is observed. Unlike v2 at higher collision energies, the v2 values at mid-rapidity for all light nuclei are negative and no scaling is observed with the atomic mass number. Calculations by the Jet AA Microscopic Transport Model (JAM), with baryonic mean-field plus nucleon coalescence, are in good agreement with our observations, implying baryonic interactions dominate the collective dynamics in 3 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC.

Abstract: The S-DALINAC is a superconductive linear electron accelerator operating at 3 GHz and allows operation in energy recovery mode (ERL). For the operation in the ERL mode accelerated and decelerated beams travel inside the same beamline but not necessarily share the same orbit. That leads to a bunch rate of 6 GHz. Non-destructive monitoring tools that allow optimization of acceleration and deceleration processes and achieve high recovery efficiency are important for operation in the ERL mode. The Low Gain Avalanche Detector (LGAD) is a silicon detector with internal gain layer optimized for 4-D tracking with timing resolution below 50 ps* which makes it a promising candidate for beam time structure monitoring. Abstract: The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment* is currently under construction at the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Darmstadt. The aim of the experiment is the exploration of the Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) phase diagram of matter at high net-baryon densities and for moderate temperatures. In this contribution a beam monitoring (BMON) system will be presented which will include a high-speed time-zero (T0) detector. The detector system must meet the requirements of the CBM time-of-flight (ToF) measurement system for proton and heavy-ion beams and should also allow for beam monitoring. The detector technology is planned to be based on chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond basis but also new Low Gain Avalanche Detector (LGAD) developments are evaluated. Abstract: We present a study of the reaction $��^-p \to ne^+e^-$ for $\sqrt{s}=1.49\,\textrm{GeV}$, including non-resonant Born terms and contributions of the $N(1440)$, $N(1520)$, $N(1535)$ resonances ($R$), using an effective-Lagrangian model, which we extended by a phenomenological phase factor at the $RN��$ vertex function. We give predictions for both the differential cross section $d��/dm$ and the spin density matrix elements of the virtual photon that decays into the lepton pair. Abstract: Flow harmonics (vn) of the Fourier expansion for the azimuthal distributions of hadrons are commonly employed to quantify the azimuthal anisotropy of particle production relative to the collision symmetry planes. While lower order Fourier coefficients (v2 and v3) are more directly related to the corresponding eccentricities of the initial state, the higher-order flow harmonics (vn>3) can be induced by a modecoupled response to the lower-order anisotropies, in addition to a linear response to the same-order anisotropies. These higher-order flow harmonics and their linear and mode-coupled contributions can be used to more precisely constrain the initial conditions and the transport properties of the medium in theoretical models. The multiparticle azimuthal cumulant method is used to measure the linear and mode-coupled contributions in the higher-order anisotropic flow, the mode-coupled response coefficients, and the correlations of the event plane angles for charged particles as functions of centrality and transverse momentum in Au+Au collisions at nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy √sN N= 200 GeV. The results are compared to similar LHC measurements as well as to several viscous hydrodynamic calculations with varying initial conditions.

Abstract: In this letter, measurements of the shared momentum fraction (zg) and the groomed jet radius (Rg), as defined in the SoftDrop algorithm, are reported in p+p collisions at √s = 200 GeV collected by the STAR experiment. These substructure observables are differentially measured for jets of varying resolution parameters from R = 0.2 − 0.6 in the transverse momentum range 15 < pT,jet < 60 GeV/c. These studies show that, in the pT,jet range accessible at √s = 200 GeV and with increasing jet resolution parameter and jet transverse momentum, the zg distribution asymptotically converges to the DGLAP splitting kernel for a quark radiating a gluon. The groomed jet radius measurements reflect a momentum-dependent narrowing of the jet structure for jets of a given resolution parameter, i.e., the larger the pT,jet, the narrower the first splitting. For the first time, these fully corrected measurements are compared to Monte Carlo generators with leading order QCD matrix elements and leading log in the parton shower, and to state-of-the-art theoretical calculations at next-to-leading-log accuracy. We observe that PYTHIA 6 with parameters tuned to reproduce RHIC measurements is able to quantitatively describe data, whereas PYTHIA 8 and HERWIG 7, tuned to reproduce LHC data, are unable to provide a simultaneous description of both zg and Rg, resulting in opportunities for fine parameter tuning of these models for p+p collisions at RHIC energies. We also find that the theoretical calculations without non-perturbative corrections are able to qualitatively describe the trend in data for jets of large resolution parameters at high pT,jet, but fail at small jet resolution parameters and low jet transverse momenta.

Abstract: The beam quality monitoring of extracted beams from SIS18 at GSI, transported to the HADES experiment is of great importance to ensure a high efficient data recording. The main detector system used for this purpose is the Start-Veto system which consists of two diamond based sensors made of pcCVD and scCVD diamond materials. Both sensors are equipped with a double-sided strip segmented metallization (300 µm width) which allows a position determination of the beam. Those sensors are able to deliver a time precision 100 ps and can handle rate capabilities up to 10⁷ particles/s/channel. Beside the diamond sensors a plastic scintillation based beam halo detector is used. The read-out of the detectors is based on the TRB3 system*. A 264 channel TDC (Time to Digital Converter) is implemented in FPGA technology with 10 ps precision. The TRB3 system serves as a fast and flexible Data Acquisition System (DAQ) with integrated scaler capability. The analysis and online visualization is performed using the Data Acquisition Backbone Core (DABC)** framework. In this contribution the performance of the system, which was used in order to evaluate an Ar and Ag ion beam delivered by the SIS 18 accelerator, will be discussed., Proceedings of the 10th Int. Having the precise time measurement and a precise position information of the incoming beam ions one can monitor important beam parameters namely the beam intensity, its position during extraction and the beam time structure. National inputs as well as inputs from National Laboratories are also an important element of the process. All these inputs are then reviewed by the Physics Preparatory Group (PPG), whose role is to organize a Symposium around the submitted ideas and to prepare a community discussion on the importance and merits of the various proposals. The results of these discussions are then concisely summarised in this Briefing Book, prepared by the Conveners, assisted by Scientific Secretaries, and with further contributions provided by the Contributors listed on the title page. This constitutes the basis for the considerations of the European Strategy Group (ESG), consisting of scientific delegates from CERN Member States, Associate Member States, directors of major European laboratories, representatives of various European organizations as well as invitees from outside the European Community. The ESG has the mission to formulate the European Strategy Update for the consideration and approval of the CERN Council. Abstract: Quark interactions with topological gluon configurations can induce chirality imbalance and local parity violation in quantum chromodynamics. This can lead to electric charge separation along the strong magnetic field in relativistic heavy-ion collisions – the chiral magnetic effect (CME). We report measurements by the STAR collaboration of a CME-sensitive observable in p + Au and d + Au collisions at 200 GeV, where the CME is not expected, using charge-dependent pair correlations relative to a third particle. We observe strong charge-dependent correlations similar to those measured in heavy-ion collisions. This bears important implications for the interpretation of the heavy-ion data.

Abstract: New measurements of directed flow for charged hadrons, characterized by the Fourier coefficient v1, are presented for transverse momenta pT, and centrality intervals in Au+Au collisions recorded by the STAR experiment for the center-of-mass energy range √sN N = 7.7–200 GeV. The measurements underscore the importance of momentum conservation, and the characteristic dependencies on √sN N , centrality and pT are consistent with the expectations of geometric fluctuations generated in the initial stages of the collision, acting in concert with a hydrodynamic-like expansion. The centrality and pT dependencies of veven 1 , as well as an observed similarity between its excitation function and that for v3, could serve as constraints for initial-state models. The veven 1 excitation function could also provide an important supplement to the flow measurements employed for precision extraction of the temperature dependence of the specific shear viscosity.

49. Research and Development of Diamond Based Beam Monitoring and Diagnostics Systems at the S-DALINAC

Abstract: For future experiments with the HADES and CBM detectors at FAIR in Darmstadt, a radiation hard and fast beam detector is required. The beam detector has to perform precise T0 measurements (σ_{T0} < 50 ps) and should also offer beam monitoring capabilities. These tasks can be fulfilled by utilizing single-crystal Chemical Vapor Deposition (scCVD) diamond based detectors. For research and development of such detectors, a test set-up will be installed at the Superconducting Darmstadt Electron Linear Accelerator (S-DALINAC) of TU Darmstadt. A read-out system for a beam monitoring and diagnostics system is currently under development. It is based on the already well established TRB3 platform, which can provide FPGA based signal discriminators and high precision FPGA-TDCs with on-line monitoring capabilities. In this contribution the concept and the performance of a prototype beam monitoring system will be discussed. Furthermore the preparatory work, with particular focus on the beam-line simulations, for a multipurpose beam detector test set-up at the S-DALINAC will be addressed., Proceedings of the 8th Int.
