With the growing number of detections of binary black hole mergers, we are beginning to probe structure in the distribution of masses. A recent study by Schneider et al. proposes that isolated binary evolution of stripped stars naturally gives rise to the peaks at chirp masses $\sim 8 M_\odot$, $14 M_\odot$ in the chirp mass distribution and explains the dearth of black holes between $\approx 10-12 M_\odot$ in chirp mass. The gap in chirp mass results from an apparent gap in the component mass distribution between $m_1, m_2 \approx 10-15 M_\odot$ and the specific pairing of these black holes. This component mass gap results from the variation in core compactness of the progenitor, where a drop in compactness of Carbon-Oxygen core mass will no longer form black holes from core collapse. We develop a population model motivated by this scenario to probe the structure of the component mass distribution of binary black holes consisting of two populations: 1) two peak components to represent black holes formed in the compactness peaks, and 2) a powerlaw component to account for any polluting events, these are binaries that may have formed from different channels (e.g. dynamical). We perform hierarchical Bayesian inference to analyse the events from the third gravitational-wave transient catalogue (GWTC-3) with this model. We find that there is a preference for the lower mass peak to drop off sharply at $\sim 11 M_\odot$ and the upper mass peak to turn on at $\sim 13 M_\odot$, in line with predictions from Schneider et al. However, there is no clear evidence for a gap. We also find mild support for the two populations to have different spin distributions. Theoretical studies of angular momentum transport suggest that isolated stellar-mass black holes are born with negligible dimensionless spin magnitudes $\chi \lesssim 0.01$. However, recent gravitational-wave observations indicate $\gtrsim 40\%$ of binary black hole systems contain at least one black hole with a non-negligible spin magnitude. One explanation is that the first-born black hole spins up the stellar core of what will become the second-born black hole through tidal interactions. Typically, the second-born black hole is the ``secondary'' (less-massive) black hole, though, it may become the ``primary'' (more-massive) black hole through a process known as mass-ratio reversal. We investigate this hypothesis by analysing data from the third gravitational-wave transient catalog (GWTC-3) using a ``single-spin'' framework in which only one black hole may spin in any given binary. Given this assumption, we show that at least $28\%$ (90% credibility) of the LIGO--Virgo--KAGRA binaries contain a primary with significant spin, possibly indicative of mass-ratio reversal. We find no evidence for binaries that contain a secondary with significant spin. However, the single-spin framework is moderately disfavoured (natural log Bayes factor $\ln B = 3.1$) when compared to a model that allows both black holes to spin. If future studies can firmly establish that most merging binaries contain two spinning black holes, it may call into question our understanding of formation mechanisms for binary black holes or the efficiency of angular momentum transport in black hole progenitors., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Fulfilling the rich promise of rapid advances in time-domain astronomy is only possible through confronting our observations with physical models and extracting the parameters that best describe what we see. Here, we introduce {\sc Redback}; a Bayesian inference software package for electromagnetic transients. {\sc Redback} provides an object-orientated {\sc python} interface to over 12 different samplers and over 100 different models for kilonovae, supernovae, gamma-ray burst afterglows, tidal disruption events, engine-driven transients among other explosive transients. The models range in complexity from simple analytical and semi-analytical models to surrogates built upon numerical simulations accelerated via machine learning. {\sc Redback} also provides a simple interface for downloading and processing data from various catalogs such as \textit{Swift} and Fink. The software can also serve as an engine to simulate transients for telescopes such as the Zwicky Transient Facility and Vera Rubin with realistic cadences, limiting magnitudes, and sky-coverage or a hypothetical user-constructed survey or a generic transient for target-of-opportunity observations with different telescopes. As a demonstration of its capabilities, we show how {\sc Redback} can be used to jointly fit the spectrum and photometry of a kilonova, enabling a more powerful, holistic probe into the properties of a transient. We also showcase general examples of how {\sc Redback} can be used as a tool to simulate transients for realistic surveys, fit models to real, simulated, or private data, multi-messenger inference with gravitational waves, and serve as an end-to-end software toolkit for parameter estimation and interpreting the nature of electromagnetic transients., Comment: Published in MNRAS. 25 pages 11 figures. Binary black holes formed via different pathways are predicted to have distinct spin properties. Measuring these properties with gravitational waves provides an opportunity to unveil the origins of binary black holes. Recent work draws conflicting conclusions regarding the spin distribution observed by LIGO--Virgo--KAGRA (LVK). Some analyses suggest that a fraction of the observed black-hole spin vectors are significantly misaligned (by $>90^\circ$) relative to the orbital angular momentum. This has been interpreted to mean that some binaries in the LVK dataset are assembled dynamically in dense stellar environments. Other analyses find support for a sub-population of binaries with negligible spin and no evidence for significantly misaligned spin -- a result consistent with the field formation scenario. In this work, we study the spin properties of binary black holes in the third LVK gravitational-wave transient catalog. We find that there is insufficient data to resolve the existence of a sub-population of binaries with negligible black-hole spin (the presence of this sub-population is supported by a modest Bayes factor of 1.7). We find modest support for the existence of mergers with extreme spin tilt angles $> 90^\circ$ (the presence of extreme-tilt binaries is favored by a Bayes factor of 10.1). Only one thing is clear: at least some of the LVK binaries formed in the field. At most $89\%$ of binaries are assembled dynamically (99\% credibility), though, the true branching fraction could be much lower, even negligible.

We search for features in the mass distribution of detected compact binary coalescences which signify the transition between neutron stars and black holes. We analyze all gravitational wave detections by LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA made through the end of the first half of the third observing run, and find clear evidence for two different populations of compact objects based solely on gravitational wave data. We confidently (99.3%) find a steepening relative to a single power law describing neutron stars and low-mass black holes below $2.4^{+0.5}_{-0.5}\text{ M}_{\odot}$, which is consistent with many predictions for the maximum neutron star mass. We find suggestions of the purported lower mass gap between the most massive neutron stars and the least massive black holes, but are unable to conclusively resolve it with current data. If it exists, we find the lower mass gap's edges to lie at $2.2^{+0.7}_{-0.5}\text{ M}_{\odot}$ and $6.0^{+2.4}_{-1.4}\text{ M}_{\odot}$. We re-examine events that have been deemed "exceptional" by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA collaborations in the context of these features. We analyze GW190814 self-consistently in the context of the full population of compact binaries, finding support for its secondary to be either a neutron star or a lower mass gap object, consistent with previous claims. Our models are the first to accommodate this event, which is an outlier with respect to the binary black hole population. We find that GW200105 and GW200115 probe the edges of, and may have components within, the lower mass gap. As future data improve global population models, the classification of these events will also improve.

Recent work paints a conflicting portrait of the distribution of black hole spins in merging binaries measured with gravitational waves. Some analyses find that a significant fraction of merging binaries contain at least one black hole with a spin tilt $>90^\circ$ with respect to the orbital angular momentum vector, which has been interpreted as a signature for dynamical assembly. Other analyses find the data are consistent with a bimodal population in which some binaries contain black holes with negligible spin while the rest contain black holes with spin vectors preferentially aligned with the orbital angular momentum vector. In this work, we scrutinize models for the distribution of black hole spins to pinpoint possible failure modes in which the model yields a faulty conclusion. We reanalyze data from the second LIGO--Virgo gravitational-wave transient catalog (GWTC-2) using a revised spin model, which allows for a sub-population of black holes with negligible spins. In agreement with recent results by Roulet et al., we show that the GWTC-2 detections are consistent with two distinct sub-populations. We estimate that $29-75\%$ (90\% credible interval) of merging binaries contain black holes with negligible spin $\chi \approx 0$. The remaining binaries are part of a second sub-population in which the spin vectors are preferentially (but not exactly) aligned to the orbital angular momentum. The black holes in this second sub-population are characterized by spins of $\chi\sim0.45$. We suggest that the inferred spin distribution is consistent with the hypothesis that all merging binaries form via the field formation scenario., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

As catalogs of gravitational-wave transients grow, new records are set for the most extreme systems observed to date. The most massive observed black holes probe the physics of pair instability supernovae while providing clues about the environments in which binary black hole systems are assembled. The least massive black holes, meanwhile, allow us to investigate the purported neutron star-black hole mass gap, and binaries with unusually asymmetric mass ratios or large spins inform our understanding of binary and stellar evolution. Existing outlier tests generally implement leave-one-out analyses, but these do not account for the fact that the event being left out was by definition an extreme member of the population. This results in a bias in the evaluation of outliers. We correct for this bias by introducing a coarse-graining framework to investigate whether these extremal events are true outliers or whether they are consistent with the rest of the observed population. Our method enables us to study extremal events while testing for population model misspecification. We show that this ameliorates biases present in the leave-one-out analyses commonly used within the gravitational-wave community. Applying our method to results from the second LIGO--Virgo transient catalog, we find qualitative agreement with the conclusions of Abbott et al, ApJL 913 L7 (2021). Neutron stars in low mass X-ray binaries are hypothesised to emit continuous gravitational waves that may be detectable by ground-based observatories. The torque balance model predicts that a higher accretion rate produces larger-amplitude gravitational waves, hence low mass X-ray binaries with high X-ray flux are promising targets for gravitational wave searches. The detection of X-ray pulsations would identify the spin frequency of these neutron stars, and thereby improve the sensitivity of continuous gravitational-wave searches by reducing the volume of the search parameter space. We perform a semi-coherent search for pulsations in the two low mass X-ray binaries Scorpius X-1 and Cygnus X-2 using X-ray data from the \textit{ Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer} Proportional Counter Array. We find no clear evidence for pulsations, and obtain upper limits (at $90\%$ confidence) on the fractional pulse amplitude, with the most stringent being $0.034\%$ for Scorpius X-1 and $0.23\%$ for Cygnus X-2. These upper limits improve upon those of Vaughan et al. (1994) by factors of $\sim 8.2$ and $\sim 1.6$ respectively., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

Radio pulsar observations probe the lives of Galactic double neutron-star (DNS) systems while gravitational waves enable us to study extragalactic DNS in their final moments. By combining measurements from radio and gravitational-wave astronomy, we seek to gain a more complete understanding of DNS from formation to merger. We analyse the recent gravitational-wave binary neutron star mergers GW170817 and GW190425 in the context of other DNS known from radio astronomy. By employing a model for the birth and evolution of DNS, we measure the mass distribution of DNS at birth, at mid-life (in the radio), and at death (in gravitational waves). We consider the hypothesis that the high-mass gravitational-wave event GW190425 is part of a subpopulation formed through unstable case BB mass transfer, which quickly merge in $\sim 10-100~\mathrm{Myr}$. We find mild evidence to support this hypothesis and that GW190425 is not a clear outlier from the radio population as previously claimed. If there are fast-merging binaries, we estimate that they constitute $8-79\%$ of DNS at birth (90% credibility). We estimate the typical delay time between the birth and death of fast-merging binaries to be $\approx 5-401~\mathrm{Myr}$ (90% credibility). As the number of gravitational-wave transient detections grows, the inclusion of marginally significant events in gravitational-wave catalogs will lead to increasing contamination from false positives. In this paper, we address the question of how to carry out population studies in light of the fact that some fraction of marginally significant gravitational-wave events are of terrestrial origin. We show that previously published estimates of $p_\text{astro}$, the probability that an event is of astrophysical origin, imply an effective noise likelihood, which can be used to take into account the uncertain origin of marginal events in population studies. We derive a formalism to carry out population studies with ambiguous gravitational-wave events. We demonstrate this formalism using events from the LIGO/Virgo Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog 1 (GWTC-1) as well as events from the Venumadhav et al. "IAS catalog." We derive posterior distributions for population parameters and discuss how they change when we take into account $p_\text{astro}$.
