Broad absorption line (BAL) quasars are characterized by gas clouds that absorb flux at the wavelength of common quasar spectral features, although blueshifted by velocities that can exceed 0.1c. BAL features are interesting as signatures of significant feedback, yet they can also compromise cosmological studies with quasars by distorting the shape of the most prominent quasar emission lines, impacting redshift accuracy and measurements of the matter density distribution traced by the Lyman α forest. We present a catalogue of BAL quasars discovered in the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey Early Data Release, which were observed as part of DESI Survey Validation, as well as the first two months of the main survey. We describe our method to automatically identify BAL quasars in DESI data, the quantities we measure for each BAL, and investigate the completeness and purity of this method with mock DESI observations. We mask the wavelengths of the BAL features and re-evaluate each BAL quasar redshift, finding new redshifts which are 243 km s−1 smaller on average for the BAL quasar sample. These new, more accurate redshifts are important to obtain the best measurements of quasar clustering, especially at small scales. Finally, we present some spectra of rarer classes of BALs that illustrate the potential of DESI data to identify such populations for further study.

Current images of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) candidates at the centre of our Galaxy and M87 have opened an unprecedented era for studying strong gravity and the nature of relativistic sources. Very-long-baseline interferometry data show images consistent with a central SMBH within General Relativity (GR). However, it is essential to consider whether other well-motivated dark compact objects within GR could produce similar images. Recent studies have shown that dark matter (DM) haloes modelled as self-gravitating systems of neutral fermions can harbour very dense fermionic cores at their centres, which can mimic the space–time features of a black hole (BH). Such dense, horizonless DM cores can satisfy the observational constraints: they can be supermassive and compact and lack a hard surface. We investigate whether such cores can produce similar observational signatures to those of BHs when illuminated by an accretion disc. We compute images and spectra of the fermion cores with a general-relativistic ray tracing technique, assuming the radiation originates from standard |$\alpha$| discs, which are self-consistently solved within the current DM framework. Our simulated images possess a central brightness depression surrounded by a ring-like feature, resembling what is expected in the BH scenario. For Milky Way-like haloes, the central brightness depressions have diameters down to |${\sim} 35\, \mu \text{as}$| as measured from a distance of approximately |$8\,$|  kpc. Finally, we show that the DM cores do not possess photon rings, a key difference from the BH paradigm, which could help discriminate between the models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present observations of mid- J (J = 4–3 or J = 5–4) carbon monoxide (CO) emission lines and continuum emission from a sample of ten of the most luminous (L bol |$\ge$| 10 |$^{14}$|  L |$\rm \odot$| ) Hot Dust-Obscured Galaxies (Hot DOGs) discovered by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) with redshifts up to 4.6. We uncover broad spectral lines (FWHM |$\ge$| 400 km s |$^{-1}$|⁠) in these objects, suggesting a turbulent molecular interstellar medium (ISM) may be ubiquitous in Hot DOGs. A halo of molecular gas, extending out to a radius of 5 kpc is observed in W2305–0039, likely supplied by 940 km s |$^{-1}$| molecular outflows. W0831+0140 is plausibly the host of a merger between at least two galaxies, consistent with observations made using ionized gas. These CO(4–3) observations contrast with previous CO(1–0) studies of the same sources: the CO(4–3) to CO(1–0) luminosity ratios exceed 300 in each source, suggesting that the lowest excited states of CO are underluminous. These findings show that the molecular gas in Hot DOGs is consistently turbulent, plausibly a consequence of AGN feedback, triggered by galactic mergers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We studied the ionized gas in the inner region (⁠|$\sim$| |$680\times 470$| pc2) of the galaxy NGC 6868 using Gemini/GMOS (Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph) integral field unit observations. Channel maps reveal complex kinematics and morphology, indicating multiple processes at work in NGC 6868. Through emission-line fitting, we identified two ubiquitous components in our data: a narrow (⁠|$\sigma \sim 110$| km s |$^{-1}$|⁠) tracing an ionized gas disc and a broad component (⁠|$\sigma \sim 300$| km s |$^{-1}$|⁠) mainly associated with inflowing/outflowing gas. The derived V -band reddening shows a spatial distribution consistent with that obtained from stellar population synthesis, although with generally higher values. For the first time, we measured the electron temperature in NGC 6868, finding values ranging from |$\sim$| 14 000 K in the central region to |$\gtrsim 20000$| K with an outward increasing temperature gradient. The electron density map exhibits an inverse relationship, with central values reaching |$N_e\sim 4000$| cm–3 for the broad component decreasing to |$N_e\sim 100$| cm–3 towards the edges of the field of view. Using BPT diagrams, we found that all spaxels are consistent with both active galactic nucleus (AGN) and shock ionization. However, when this information is combined with our kinematic and temperature findings, and further supported by the WHAN diagram, we argue that an AGN is the dominant ionization mechanism in the central region of NGC 6868, while the extended outer component is ionized by a combination of hot low-mass evolved stars and shocks. In the era of massive photometric surveys, we explore several approaches to estimate the masses of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from optical ground-based imaging, in each case comparing to the independent SMBH mass measurement obtained from spectroscopic data. We select a case-study sample of 28 type 1 AGN hosted by nearby galaxies from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. We perform multicomponent spectral decomposition, extract the AGN component, and calculate the SMBH mass from the broad H |$\alpha$| emission line width and luminosity. The photometric g and i band data is decomposed into AGN+spheroid(+disc)(+bar) components with careful surface brightness fitting. From these, the SMBH mass is estimated using its relation with the spheroid Sérsic index or effective radius (both used for the first time on ground-based optical imaging of AGN); and the more widely used scaling relations based on bulge or galaxy stellar mass. We find no correlation between the H |$\alpha$| -derived SMBH masses and those based on the spheroid Sérsic index or effective radius, despite these being the most direct methods involving only one scaling relation. The bulge or galaxy stellar mass based methods both yield significant correlations, although with considerable scatter and, in the latter case, a systematic offset. We provide possible explanations for this and discuss the requirements, advantages, and drawbacks of each method. These considerations will be useful to optimize strategies for upcoming high quality ground-based and space-borne sky surveys to estimate SMBH masses in large numbers of AGN. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We estimated values of spin, mass, and inclination angle for sample of 42 red quasars. Our estimations show that two objects: F2MS J1113+1244 and F2MS J1434+0935 with the highest Eddington ratios may have geometrically thick disk. Six objects: SDSS J0036‐0113, S82X 0040+0058, S82X 0118+0018, S82X 0303‐0115, FBQS J1227+3214, S82X 2328‐0028 may have "retrograde" rotation. The M31 nucleus contains a supermassive black hole embedded in a massive stellar disc of apsidally aligned eccentric orbits. It has recently been shown that this disc is slowly precessing at a rate consistent with zero. Here, we demonstrate using N -body methods that apsidally aligned eccentric discs can form with a significant (⁠|$\sim$| 0.5) fraction of orbits counter-rotating as the result of a gravitational wave recoil kick of merging supermassive black holes. Higher amplitude kicks map to a larger retrograde fraction in the surrounding stellar population, which in turn results in slow precession. We furthermore show that discs with significant counter-rotation are more stable (i.e. apsidal alignment is most pronounced and long lasting), more eccentric, and have the highest rates of stars entering the black hole's tidal disruption radius. We present here radiosed , a Bayesian inference framework tailored to modelling and classifying broad-band radio spectral energy distributions (SEDs) using only data from publicly released, large-area surveys. We outline the functionality of radiosed , with its focus on broad-band radio emissions that can trace kiloparsec-scale absorption within both the radio jets and the circumgalactic medium of active galactic nuclei (AGN). In particular, we discuss the capability of radiosed to advance our understanding of AGN physics and composition within youngest and most compact sources, for which high-resolution imaging is often unavailable. These young radio AGN typically manifest as peaked spectrum sources that, before radiosed , were difficult to identify owing to the large, broad-band frequency coverage typically required, and yet they provide an invaluable environment for understanding AGN evolution and feedback. We discuss the implementation details of radiosed , and we validate our approach against both synthetic and observational data. Since the surveys used are drawn from multiple epochs of observation, we also consider the output from radiosed in the context of AGN variability. Finally, we show that radiosed recovers the expected SED shapes for a selection of well-characterized radio sources from the literature, and we discuss avenues for further study of these and other sources using radio SED fitting as a starting point. The scalability and modularity of this framework make it an exciting tool for multiwavelength astronomers as next-generation telescopes begin several all-sky surveys. We derive a mean attenuation curve out to the rest-frame extreme ultraviolet (EUV) for 'BAL dust' – the dust causing the additional extinction of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with broad absorption lines (BALQSOs). In contrast to the normal, relatively flat, mean AGN attenuation curve, BAL dust is well fit by a steeply rising, SMC-like curve. We confirm the shape of the theoretical Weingartner & Draine SMC curve out to 700 Angstroms but the drop in attenuation at still shorter wavelengths is less than predicted. The similar SMC-like attenuation curve for low-ionization BALQSOs (LoBALs) does not support the idea that they are an early phase in the life of an AGN when it is breaking out of a cocoon of star-forming dust. Although the attenuation is only |$E(B - V) \sim 0.03\!-\!0.05$| in the optical, it rises to one magnitude in the EUV, which is an optimum value for radiative acceleration of dusty gas. Because the spectral energy distribution of AGNs peaks in the EUV, the force on the dust dominates the acceleration of BAL gas. Although the shape of the attenuation curve for LoBALs is similar to the shape for HiBALs, the LoBALs on average show negative attenuation in the optical. This is naturally explained if there is more light scattered into our line of sight in LoBALs compared with non-BALQSOs. We suggest that this and partial covering are causes when attenuation curves appear to be steeper in the UV than an SMC curve. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate the thermodynamics of close encounters between stellar mass black holes (BHs) in the gaseous discs of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), during which binary black holes (BBHs) may form. We consider a suite of 2D viscous hydrodynamical simulations within a shearing box prescription using the Eulerian grid code athena ++. We study formation scenarios where the fluid is either an isothermal gas or an adiabatic mixture of gas and radiation in local thermal equilibrium. We include the effects of viscous and shock heating, as well as optically thick cooling. We co-evolve the embedded BHs with the gas, keeping track of the energetic dissipation and torquing of the BBH by gas and inertial forces. We find that compared to the isothermal case, the minidiscs formed around each BH are significantly hotter and more diffuse, though BBH formation is still efficient. We observe massive blast waves arising from collisions between the radiative minidiscs during both the initial close encounter and subsequent periapsis periods for successfully bound BBHs. These 'disc novae' have a profound effect, depleting the BBH Hill sphere of gas and injecting energy into the surrounding medium. In analysing the thermal emission from these events, we observe periodic peaks in local luminosity associated with close encounters/periapses, with emission peaking in the optical/near-infrared (IR). In the AGN outskirts, these outbursts can reach 4 per cent of the AGN luminosity in the IR band, with flares rising over 0.5–1 yr. A well-known calibrator source in radio astronomy, 3C 286 (⁠|$z=0.85$|⁠), is a compact steep-spectrum (CSS) radio source and spectroscopically classified as a narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy. It is also known for its damped Ly |$\alpha$| system from an intervening galaxy at |$z=0.692$| detected in both ultraviolet (UV) and radio spectra. In addition, despite being a misaligned active galactic nuclei (AGN), 3C 286 is also detected in |$\gamma$| -rays by Fermi. Thus, this unique object combines the characteristics of CSS sources, NLS1 galaxies, and |$\gamma$| -ray emitters with misaligned jets, providing an excellent laboratory for extending our knowledge of AGN disc–jet coupling. Despite its significance, 3C 286 has been rarely observed in X-rays. In this study, we present our deep XMM–Newton and Chandra observations of 3C 286. The results reveal that the X-ray spectrum can be well-described by models including an intervening absorber with redshift and column density consistent with previous UV and radio observations. The most important finding is that the spectrum cannot be described by a single power law, but a soft excess is required which is parametrized by a blackbody. Furthermore, we find evidence suggesting the presence of off-nuclear X-ray emission at a radius that corresponds to the location of the radio lobes. While further theoretical work is still needed, our findings offer new clues to understand the specific mechanism for |$\gamma$| -ray emission from this unique object. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For the first time, a calibration between the He  i |$\lambda 5876$| /H  |$\beta$| emission line ratio and the helium abundance y = 12 + log(He/H) for Narrow line regions of Seyfert 2 Active Galactic Nuclei is proposed. In this context, observational data (taken from the SDSS-DR15 and from the literature) and direct abundance estimates (via the |$T_{\rm e}$| -method) for a sample of 65 local (⁠|$z \: \lt \: 0.2$|⁠) Seyfert 2 nuclei are considered. The resulting calibration estimates the y abundance with an average uncertainty of 0.02 dex. Applying our calibration to spectroscopic data containing only strong emission lines, it yields a helium abundance distribution similar to that obtained via the |$T_{\rm e}$| -method. Some cautions must be considered to apply our calibration for Seyfert 2 nuclei with high values of electron temperature (⁠|${\gtrsim} 20\, 000$|  K) or ionization parameter (⁠|$\log U \ \gt\ {-}2.0$|⁠). Understanding star formation in galaxies requires resolving the physical scale on which star formation often occurs: the scale of star clusters. We present a multiwavelength, eight-parsec resolution study of star formation in the circumnuclear star cluster and molecular gas rings of the early-type spiral NGC 1386. The cluster ring formed simultaneously ∼4 Myr ago. The clusters have similar properties in terms of mass and star formation rate, resembling those of H  ii regions in the Milky Way disc. The molecular CO gas resolves into long filaments, which define a secondary ring detached from the cluster ring. Most clusters are in CO voids. Their separation with respect to the CO filaments is reminiscent of that seen in galaxy spiral arms. By analogy, we propose that a density wave through the disc of this galaxy may have produced this gap in the central kpc. The CO filaments fragment into strings of dense, unresolved clouds with no evidence of a stellar counterpart. These clouds may be the sites of a future population of clusters in the ring. The free-fall time of these clouds, ∼10 Myr, is close to the orbital time of the CO ring. This coincidence could lead to a synchronous bursting ring, as is the case for the current ring. The inward spiralling morphology of the CO filaments and co-spatiality with equivalent kpc-scale dust filaments are suggestive of their role as matter carriers from the galaxy outskirts to feed the molecular ring and a moderately active nucleus. The relation between nuclear star clusters (NSCs) and the growth of the central supermassive black holes (SMBHs), as well as their connection to the properties of the host galaxies, is crucial for understanding the evolution of galaxies. Recent observations have revealed that about 10 per cent of nucleated galaxies host hybrid nuclei, consisting of both NSCs and accreting SMBHs that power active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Motivated by the potential of the recently published multiwavelength data sets from LeMMINGs survey, here we present the most thorough investigation to date of the incidence of hybrid nuclei in a large sample of 100 nearby nucleated galaxies (10 E, 25 S0, 63 S, and 2 Irr), covering a wide range in stellar mass (⁠|$M_{*,\rm gal} \sim 10^{8.7}-10^{12}~\rm M_{\odot }$|⁠). We identify the nuclei and derive their properties by performing detailed 1D and 2D multicomponent decompositions of the optical and near-infrared HST stellar light distributions of the galaxies using Sérsic and core-Sérsic models. Our AGN diagnostics are based on homogeneously derived nuclear 1.5 GHz e -MERLIN radio, Chandra X-ray (0.3–10 keV), and optical emission-line data. We determine the nucleation fraction (⁠|$f_{\rm nuc}$|⁠) as the relative incidence of nuclei across the LeMMINGs HST sample and find |$f_{\rm nuc} =~$| 100/149 (= 67 |$\pm$| 7 per cent), confirming previous work, with a peak value of |$49/56~(= 88 \pm 13$|  per cent) at bulge masses |$M_{*,\rm bulge}\sim 10^{9.4}- 10^{10.8}~ \rm M_{\odot }$|⁠. We identify 30 nucleated LeMMINGs galaxies that are optically active, radio-detected, and X-ray luminous (⁠|$L_\textnormal {X} \gt 10^{39}$| erg s |$^{-1}$|⁠). This indicates that our nucleated sample has a lower limit |$\sim$| 30 per cent occupancy of hybrid nuclei, which is a function of |$M_{*,\rm bulge}$| and |$M_{*,\rm gal}$|⁠. We find that hybrid nuclei have a number density of |$(1.5 \pm 0.4)\times 10^{-5}$|  Mpc |$^{-3}$|⁠ , are more common at |$M_{*,\rm gal}\sim 10^{10.6}- 10^{11.8}~\rm M_{\odot }$| and occur, at least, three times more frequently than previously reported. In this work, we explore the connection of three jetted |$\gamma -$| loud AGNs classes: Compact steep-spectrum sources (CSS), Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1), and flat-spectrum radio quasars, through the modelling of the spectral energy distribution (SED). We selected two sources identified as CSS/NLS1 hybrids, PKS 2004-440 and 3C 286. Additionally, we included the source PKS 0440-00, initially classified as an FSRQ in the first Fermi -LAT catalogue, but recently reclassified as an NLS1. We present the results of their broadband SED modelling using a one-zone leptonic synchrotron-self Compton (SSC) + external Compton (EC) model. By exploring the parameter space and investigating the disc–jet connection in these sources, we analyse their classification in a model-dependent way. Our findings reveal that modeling PKS 2004-447 at relatively large angles, as expected for CSS, results in an SSC-dominated inverse Compton emission. In contrast, at low-observing angles, the inverse Compton emission is dominated by external photon fields. Both scenarios result in a jet with a low-radiative power. For 3C 286, we found that using a one-zone model limits the jet viewing angle to |$\sim 7^{\circ }$|⁠ , mainly due to its impact on the |$\gamma$| -ray emission. Our model results show a magnetically dominated jet, consistent with |$\gamma$| -CSS sources. Our results suggest that PKS 0440-00, can be classified as a powerful |$\gamma -$| NLS1, characterized by high accretion power and a jet dominated by bulk motion, similar to FSRQs. Polar dust has been discovered in a number of local active galactic nuclei (AGN), with radiation-driven torus models predicting a wind to be its main driver. However, little is known about its characteristics, spatial extent, or connection to the larger scale outflows. We present the first JWST /MIRI study aimed at imaging polar dust by zooming on to the centre of ESO 428-G14, part of the Galaxy Activity, Torus, and Outflow Survey (GATOS) survey of local AGN. We detect extended mid-infrared (MIR) emission within 200 pc from the nucleus. This polar structure is co-linear with a radio jet and lies perpendicular to a molecular gas lane that feeds and obscures the nucleus. Its morphology bears a striking resemblance to that of gas ionized by the AGN in the narrow-line region. We demonstrate that part of this spatial correspondence is due to contamination within the JWST filter bands from strong emission lines. Correcting for the contamination, we find the morphology of the dust continuum to be more compact, though still clearly extended out to |$r\approx 100 \, \rm pc$|⁠. We estimate the emitting dust has a temperature of |$\sim 120\, \rm K$|⁠. Using simple models, we find that the heating of small dust grains by the radiation from the central AGN and/or radiative jet-induced shocks is responsible for the extended MIR emission. Radiation-driven dusty winds from the torus is unlikely to be important. This has important implications for scales to which AGN winds can carry dust and dense gas out into their host galaxies. Red Geysers are galaxies with low-star formation rates and galactic scale ionized outflows likely driven by low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGN). We investigated the impact of AGN winds on the oxygen abundance using integral field spectroscopic data from Mapping Nearby Galaxies for Red Geysers, control galaxies (quiescent galaxies without outflows), and AGN hosts within the inner 1.5 kpc radius. Red Geyser galaxies have higher W |$_{80}$| values compared to those of AGN and controls, with 64 per cent showing W |$_{80}\gt 500$|  km s |$^{-1}$| that is indicative of outflow. Only 40 per cent of controls and 31 per cent of AGNs reach this value. We found a small tendency of the oxygen abundance distribution of controls to be biased towards higher values than those of Red Geysers. However, Red Geysers do not show a correlation between H |$\alpha$| width (parametrized by the W |$_{\rm 80}$|⁠) and oxygen abundance, which indicates that AGN winds are not significantly impacting the chemical abundance of the nuclear region of these galaxies. The oxygen abundance distribution mean value for the tree samples is |$\rm 12+log(O/H)\sim$| 8.7 (⁠|$\mathit{Z}\sim \rm Z_{\odot })$|⁠. On the other hand, AGN hosts show a positive correlation between W |$_{80}$| and O/H which could be due to star formation that outflows from the active nuclei could induce; or to the reservoir of gas that makes the nucleus active, and its is also used in the star formation. Extreme mass ratio inspirals (EMRIs) are one of the primary targets for the recently adopted millihertz gravitational-wave observatory LISA. Some previous studies have argued that a fraction of all EMRIs form in matter-rich environments, and can potentially explain the dozens of soft X-ray band (⁠|$\sim 10^{-1}\,\rm keV$|⁠), low-frequency (⁠|$\sim 0.1$| mHz) periodic phenomena known as quasi-periodic eruptions (QPEs) and quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs). Here, using a representative EMRI population retrofitted with cutoffs on LISA-band SNRs and luminosity distances to account for the sensitivity of current instruments, we estimate the mean frequency band in which QPEs and QPOs originating from detectable LISA EMRIs may be emitting an X-ray signal 'today' (i.e. in 2024) to be |$0.46 \pm 0.22$| mHz. We also model the well-known QPO source, RE J1034+396, which falls in this frequency band, as an EMRI assuming its primary black hole mass to be |$10^6{-}10^7 \,{\rm M}_\odot$|⁠. Through a prior-predictive analysis, we estimate the orbiting compact object's mass to be |$46^{+ 10}_{-40} \,{\rm M}_\odot$| and the source's LISA-band SNR as |$\approx 14$|⁠ , highlighting it as a candidate multimessenger EMRI target. We also highlight the role of current and near-future X-ray and UV observatories in enabling multimessenger observations of EMRIs in conjunction with LISA, and conclude with a discussion of caveats of the current analysis, such as the exclusion of eccentricity and inclination from the model, and the measurability of subsolar mass compact object EMRIs. Odd radio circles (ORCs) are mysterious rings of faint, diffuse emission recently discovered in radio surveys, some of which may be associated with galaxies in relatively dense environments. We propose that such ORCs are synchrotron emission from remnants of explosive galactic outflows, calling them OGREs, and discuss their broad-band non-thermal emission and evolution. We posit that a large amount of energy was ejected from the central galaxy in the past, creating an outgoing shock that accelerates cosmic rays. Assuming plausible values for the density, temperature and magnetic field of the ambient medium, consistency with the observed spectral index, size, and power of the ORCs requires the energy to be as high as ∼1060 erg, suggesting that their sources could be active galactic nuclei. We calculate the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the OGREs and their evolution, including synchrotron, inverse Compton (IC), and bremsstrahlung emission from electrons, and pion-decay emission from protons. We find that the SEDs of the younger OGREs are not greatly different from those of older ones currently observable as ORCs if radiative cooling of electrons is effective. As such younger OGREs are expected to be rarer and smaller, they may not be readily observable. However, if radiative cooling of electrons is ineffective, younger OGREs may be detectable in X-rays. The nature of the interaction between active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and their host galaxies remains an unsolved question. Therefore, conducting an AGN census is valuable for AGN research. Nevertheless, a significant fraction of AGNs are obscured by their environment, which blocks UV and optical emissions due to the dusty torus surrounding the central supermassive black hole (SMBH). To overcome this challenge, mid-infrared (IR) surveys have emerged as a valuable tool for identifying obscured AGNs, as the obscured light is re-emitted in this range. With its high sensitivity, the JWST uncovered more fainter objects than previous telescopes. By applying the SED fitting, this work investigates AGN candidates in JWST Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) fields. We identified 42 candidates; 30 of them are classified as composites (⁠|$0.2\le f_{\text{AGN, IR}} < 0.5$|⁠), and 12 of them are AGNs (⁠|$f_{\text{AGN, IR}}\ge 0.5$|⁠). We report the AGN luminosity contributions and AGN number fractions as a function of redshift and total infrared luminosity, showing that previously reported increasing relations are not apparent in our sample due to the sample size. This study investigates the properties of two gas structures of X-ray selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs), that is, dusty and dust-free gas components, by separating them with the line-of-sight dust extinction (⁠|$A_V$|⁠) and the neutral gas column density (⁠|$N_{\mathrm{H}}$|⁠). The typical column density of the dusty and dust-free gas differs depending on the Seyfert type, indicating that both structures have anisotropic column density distributions. The number of targets with the dusty gas column density (⁠|$N_{\mathrm{H,d}}$|⁠) of |$\log N_{\mathrm{H,d}}\ [\mathrm{cm^{-2}}]\gt 23$| is much smaller than that with the same column density of the dust-free gas. This result indicates that the optically thick part of the dusty gas structure is very thin. There are very few targets with a larger Eddington ratio (⁠|$f_{\mathrm{Edd}}$|⁠) than the effective Eddington limit of the dusty gas and the covering factor of the dusty gas with |$22\le \log N_{\mathrm{H,d}}\ [\mathrm{cm^{-2}}]\lt 24$| exhibits a clear drop at the effective Eddington limit. These results support the scenario wherein the covering factor of the dusty torus decreases in a high Eddington ratio owing to the radiation-driven dusty gas outflow. The covering factor of the dust-free gas with the column density (⁠|$N_{\mathrm{H,df}}$|⁠) of |$22\le \log N_{\mathrm{H,df}}\ [\mathrm{cm^{-2}}]\lt 24$| similarly exhibits the decrease in high Eddington ratio, although it may be owing to the dust-free gas outflow driven by certain other mechanisms than the radiation pressure. Supermassive black holes disrupt passing stars, producing outbursts called tidal disruption events (TDEs). TDEs have recently gained attention due to their unique dynamics and emission processes, which are still not fully understood. Especially, the so-called optical TDEs are of interest as they often exhibit delayed or obscured X-ray emission from the accretion disc, making the origin of the prompt emission unclear. In this paper, we present multiband optical polarization observations and optical spectrometry of a recent TDE candidate AT 2022fpx, alongside monitoring observations in optical, ultraviolet, and X-rays. The optical spectra of AT 2022fpx show Bowen fluorescence as well as highly ionized iron emission lines, which are characteristic of extreme coronal line emitters. Additionally, the source exhibits variable but low-polarized continuum emission at the outburst peak, with a clear rotation of the polarization angle. X-ray emission observed approximately 250 d after the outburst peak in the decay appear flare-like but is consistent with constant temperature blackbody emission. The overall outburst decay is slower than for typical TDEs, and resembles more the ones seen from Bowen fluorescence flares. These observations suggest that AT 2022fpx could be a key source in linking different long-lived TDE scenarios. Its unique characteristics, such as extreme coronal line emission, variable polarization, and delayed X-ray flare, can be attributed to the outer shock scenario or a clumpy torus surrounding the supermassive black hole. Further studies, especially in the context of multiwavelength observations, are crucial to fully understand the dynamics and emission mechanisms of these intriguing astrophysical events. Environmental effects are believed to play an important yet poorly understood role in triggering accretion events onto the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) of galaxies (active galactic nuclei; AGNs). Massive clusters, which represent the densest structures in the Universe, provide an excellent laboratory to isolate environmental effects and study their impact on black hole growth. In this work, we critically review observational evidence for the preferential activation of SMBHs in the outskirts of galaxy clusters. We develop a semi-empirical model under the assumption that the incidence of AGN in galaxies is independent of environment. We demonstrate that the model is broadly consistent with recent observations on the AGN halo occupation at z = 0.2, although it may overpredict satellite AGN in massive haloes at that low redshift. We then use this model to interpret the projected radial distribution of X-ray sources around high redshift (z ≈ 1) massive (⁠|$\gt 5 \times 10^{14} \, M_\odot$|⁠) clusters, which show excess counts outside their virial radius. Such an excess naturally arises in our model as a result of sample variance. Up to 20  per cent of the simulated projected radial distributions show excess counts similar to the observations, which are however, because of background/foreground AGN and hence, not physically associated with the cluster. Our analysis emphasizes the importance of projection effects and shows that current observations of z ≈ 1 clusters remain inconclusive on the activation of SMBHs during infall. In our Galactic Centre, about |$10\,000$| to |$100\,000$| stars are estimated to have survived tidal disruption events, resulting in partially disrupted remnants. These events occur when a supermassive black hole (SMBH) tidally interacts with a star, but not enough to completely disrupt the star. We use the 1D stellar evolution code Kepler and the 3D smoothed particle hydrodynamics code Phantom to model the tidal disruption of 1, 3, and |$10\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$| stars at zero-age main sequence (ZAMS), middle-age main sequence (MAMS), and terminal-age main sequence (TAMS). We map the disruption remnants into Kepler in order to understand their post-distribution evolution. We find distinct characteristics in the remnants, including increased radius, rapid core rotation, and differential rotation in the envelope. The remnants undergo composition mixing that affects their stellar evolution. Although the remnants formed by disruption of ZAMS models evolve similarly to unperturbed models of the same mass, for MAMS and TAMS stars, the remnants have higher luminosity and effective temperature. Potential observational signatures include peculiarities in nitrogen and carbon abundances, higher luminosity, rapid rotation, faster evolution, and unique tracks in the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram. Recent results from pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) show evidence for a gravitational wave background (GWB) consistent with a population of unresolved supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries (BHBs). While the data do not yet constrain the slope of the spectrum, this appears to flatten at the lowest frequencies, deviating from the power-law shape expected for circular binaries evolving solely due to gravitational wave (GW) emission. Interestingly, such flattening can be explained with a population of eccentric rather than circular binaries. The eccentricity of BHBs is notoriously difficult to predict based simply on the parameters of the host galaxies and the initial galactic orbit, as it is subject to stochastic effects. We study the evolution of the eccentricity of BHBs formed in galactic mergers with cosmological initial conditions from pairing to coalescence, with a focus on potential PTA sources. We select galactic mergers from the IllustrisTNG100-1 simulation and re-simulate them at high resolution with the N -body code griffin down to binary separations of the order of a parsec. We then estimate coalescence time-scales with a semi-analytical model of the evolution under the effects of GW emission and stellar hardening. We find that most mergers in IllustrisTNG100-1 occur on highly eccentric orbits, and that the eccentricity of BHBs at binary formation correlates with the initial eccentricity of the merger, if this is no larger than approximately 0.9. For extremely eccentric mergers, the binaries tend to form with modest eccentricities. We discuss the implications of these results on the interpretation of the observed GWB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present Very Long Baseline Array observations of radio continuum and OH line emission toward the OH megamaser (OHM) galaxy IRAS 01298−0744. We recover over 82% of the OH line emission seen in single-dish observations, including multiple strong OH line components and the broad shallow line profile spanning over 1000 km s−1. The OH emission spatially has four compact components, as well as diffuse emission, and the 3σ signals are distributed in a rectangular region with size of ∼40 × 30 mas. The spatial-velocity structure is complex and is consistent with that from HCN and HCO+ lines in the literature, indicating that the nuclear region of this source is likely still in the merging process characterized by intense nuclear activities. The multiple strong OH peaks are blue-shifted compared to dense millimetre-wave molecular gas tracers, but similar to optical Na I absorption. This suggests that the compact masers might be in an outflow driven by an active galactic nucleus or starburst. We have detected compact radio continuum emissions adjacent to the maser positions with a brightness temperature of around 3 × 106 K, similar to other OHM galaxies with very-long-baseline interferometry observations in the literature, which is consistent with a starburst origin. Aims. Based on the available observational data from the literature, we analysed the dynamics of the NGC 6240 galaxy central supermassive black hole (SMBH) system. Methods. For the dynamical modelling of this triple SBMH system, we used the massively parallel and GPU accelerated φ-GPU direct summation N-body code. Following a long-timescale modelling of the triple system, we carried out a very detailed time output analysis of the von Zeipel–Lidov–Kozai (ZLK) oscillations for the black holes. Results. According to our Newtonian simulation results, for all models and randomisations, the bound system from S1+S2 components formed at ≈3.6 Myr. The formation of the bound hierarchical triple system S+N occurred at ≈18 Myr. Over the course of these Newtonian simulations of the evolution of the triple SMBH system and the surrounding environment in NGC 6240, ZLK oscillations were detected (in most cases) for the binary components. The inclination angle between the orbital angular momentum of binary components aptly coincides with the theoretical calculations of the ZLK mechanism. Conclusions. In our set of randomised 15 Newtonian N-body dynamical galaxy models in 13 systems, we were able to detect a ZLK mechanism. In contrast, our extra few-body post-Newtonian runs (for one randomisation case) show it is only for the large inner binary initial eccentricity (in our case ≳0.9) that we are able to observe the possibility of the inner binary merging, due to the post-Newtonian energy radiation effects. For the lower eccentricity cases, the test runs show no sign of possible merging or any ZLK oscillations in the system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a detailed study of the centre of NGC 4654, a Milky Way-like spiral galaxy in the Virgo cluster that has been reported to host a double stellar nucleus, thus promising a rare view of ongoing star cluster infall into a galaxy nucleus. Analysing JWST NIRSpec integral-field spectroscopic data in combination with Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 imaging of the inner 330 × 330 pc, we find that the NGC 4645 nucleus is in fact more complex than previously thought, harbouring three massive star clusters within 32 pc of the centre. Maps of infrared emission lines in the NIRSpec spectra show different morphologies for the ionised and molecular gas components. The emission from molecular hydrogen gas is concentrated at the nuclear star cluster (NSC) location, while emission from hydrogen recombination lines is more extended beyond the central cluster. The velocity fields of both gas and stars indicate that the three clusters are part of a complicated dynamical system, with the NSC having an elevated velocity dispersion in line with its high stellar mass. To investigate the stellar populations of the three clusters in more detail, we used surface brightness modelling to measure their fluxes from UV to mid-infrared wavelengths. This information, together with spectroscopically derived extinction values, are then used to fit the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the clusters. Two of the clusters are UV-bright and well described by single stellar populations with young ages (∼3 and 5 Myr) and relatively low masses (M* ∼ 4 × 104 M⊙ and M* ∼ 105 M⊙, respectively), whereas the central cluster is much more massive (M* = 3 × 107 M⊙), and cannot be fitted by a single stellar population. Instead, we find that the presence of a minor young population (∼1 Myr, M* ∼ 3 × 104 M⊙) embedded in a dominant old population (∼8 Gyr) is required to explain its SED. Given its complex composition and the close proximity of two young star clusters that are likely to merge with it within a few hundred million years, we consider the nucleus of NGC 4654 a unique laboratory to study NSC growth from both in situ star formation and the infall of star clusters. We present a multi-wavelength analysis, from the radio to the X-ray band, of the redshift z = 6.44 VIK J2318−31 radio-loud quasi-stellar object, one of the most distant currently known of this class. The work is based on newly obtained observations (uGMRT, ATCA, and Chandra) as well as dedicated archival observations that have not yet been published (GNIRS and X-shooter). Based on the observed X-ray and radio emission, its relativistic jets are likely young and misaligned from our line of sight. Moreover, we can confirm, with simultaneous observations, the presence of a turnover in the radio spectrum at νpeak ∼ 650 MHz that is unlikely to be associated with self-synchrotron absorption. From the near-infrared spectrum we derived the mass of the central black hole, $ M_{\mathrm{BH}}=8.1^{+6.8}_{-5.6} \times 10^8\,{M_{\odot}} $ , and the Eddington ratio, $ \lambda_{\mathrm{EDD}} = 0.8^{+0.8}_{-0.6} $ , using broad emission lines as well as an accretion disc model fit to the continuum emission. Given the high accretion rate, the presence of a ∼8 × 108 M⊙ black hole at z = 6.44 can be explained by a seed black hole (∼104 M⊙) that formed at z ∼ 25, assuming a radiative efficiency ηd ∼ 0.1. However, by assuming ηd ∼ 0.3, as expected for jetted systems, the mass observed would challenge current theoretical models of black hole formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the impact of black hole nuclear activity on both the global and radial star formation rate (SFR) profiles in X-ray-selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the field of miniJPAS, the precursor of the much wider J-PAS project. Our sample includes 32 AGN with z < 0.3 detected via the XMM-Newton and Chandra surveys. For comparison, we assembled a control sample of 71 star-forming (SF) galaxies with similar magnitudes, sizes, and redshifts. To derive the global properties of both the AGN and the control SF sample, we used CIGALE to fit the spectral energy distributions derived from the 56 narrowband and 4 broadband filters from miniJPAS. We find that AGN tend to reside in more massive galaxies than their SF counterparts. After matching samples based on stellar mass and comparing their SFRs and specific SFRs (sSFRs), no significant differences appear. This suggests that the presence of AGN does not strongly influence overall star formation. However, when we used miniJPAS as an integral field unit (IFU) to dissect galaxies along their position angle, a different picture emerges. We find that AGN tend to be more centrally concentrated in mass with respect to SF galaxies. Moreover, we find a suppression of the sSFR up to 1Re and then an enhancement beyond 1Re, strongly contrasting with the decreasing radial profile of sSFRs in SF galaxies. This could point to an inside-out quenching of AGN host galaxies. Additionally, we examined how the radial profiles of the sSFRs in AGN and SF galaxies depend on galaxy morphology, by dividing our sample into disk-dominated (DD), pseudo-bulge (PB), and bulge-dominated (BD) systems. In DD systems, AGN exhibit a flat sSFR profile in the central regions and enhanced star formation beyond 1Re, contrasting with SF galaxies. In PB systems, SF galaxies show a decreasing sSFR profile, while AGN hosts exhibit an inside-out quenching scenario. In BD systems, both populations demonstrate consistent flat sSFR profiles. These findings suggest that the reason we do not see differences on a global scale is because star formation is suppressed in the central regions and enhanced in the outer regions of AGN host galaxies. The optical spectroscopic classification of active galactic nuclei (AGN) into type 1 and type 2 can be understood in the frame of the AGN unification models. However, it remains unclear which physical properties are driving the classification into intermediate sub-types (1.0, 1.2, 1.5, 1.8, 1.9). To shed light on this issue, we present an analysis of the effect of extinction and AGN and host galaxy luminosities on sub-type determination for a sample of 159 X-ray selected AGN with a complete and robust optical spectroscopic classification. The sample spans a rest-frame 2–10 keV X-ray luminosity range of 1042–1046 erg s−1 and redshifts between 0.05 and 0.75. From the fitting of their ultraviolet-to-mid-infrared spectral energy distributions, we extracted the observed AGN over total AGN+galaxy contrast, optical/ultraviolet line-of-sight extinction, as well as host galaxy and AGN luminosities. The observed contrast exhibits a clear decline with sub-type, distinguishing two main groups: 1.0–5 and 1.8–2. This difference is partly driven by an increase in extinction following the same trend. Nevertheless, 50% of 1.9s and 2s lack sufficient extinction to explain the lack of detection of broad emission lines, unveiling the necessity of an additional effect. Our findings show that 1.8–2s preferentially live in host galaxies with higher luminosities while displaying similar intrinsic AGN luminosities to 1.0–5s. Consequently, the AGN to host galaxy luminosity ratio diminishes, hindering the detection of the emission of the broad emission lines, resulting in the 1.8–2 classification of those with insufficient extinction. Thus, the combination of increasing extinction and decreasing AGN over galaxy luminosity ratio, mainly driven by an increasing host galaxy luminosity, constitutes the main reasons behind the sub-type classification into 1.0–5 and 1.8–2. The detection of blueshifted absorption lines likely associated with ionized iron K-shell transitions in the X-ray spectra of many active galactic nuclei (AGNs) suggests the presence of a highly ionized gas outflowing with mildly relativistic velocities (0.03c–0.6c) named ultra-fast outflow (UFO). Within the SUBWAYS project, we characterized these winds starting from a sample of 22 radio-quiet quasars at an intermediate redshift (0.1 ≤ z ≤ 0.4) and compared the results with similar studies in the literature on samples of local Seyfert galaxies (i.e., 42 radio-quiet AGNs observed with XMM-Newton at z ≤ 0.1) and high redshift radio-quiet quasars (i.e., 14 AGNs observed with XMM-Newton and Chandra at z ≥ 1.4). The scope of our work is a statistical study of UFO parameters and incidence considering the key physical properties of the sources, such as supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass, bolometric luminosity, accretion rates, and spectral energy distribution (SED) with the aim of gaining new insights into the UFO launching mechanisms. We find indications that highly luminous AGNs with a steeper X-ray/UV ratio, αox, are more likely to host UFOs. The presence of UFOs is not significantly related to any other AGN property in our sample. These findings suggest that the UFO phenomenon may be transient. Focusing on AGNs with UFOs, other important findings from this work include: (1) faster UFOs have larger ionization parameters and column densities; (2) X-ray radiation plays a more crucial role in driving highly ionized winds compared to UV; (3) the correlation between outflow velocity and luminosity is significantly flatter than what is expected for radiatively driven winds; (4) more massive black holes experience higher wind mass losses, suppressing the accretion of matter onto the black hole; (5) the UFO launching radius is positively correlated with the Eddington ratio. Furthermore, our analysis suggests the involvement of multiple launching mechanisms, including radiation pressure and magneto-hydrodynamic processes, rather than pointing to a single, universally applicable mechanism. We investigate close encounters by stellar mass black holes (BHs) in the gaseous discs of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) as a potential formation channel of binary black holes (BBHs). We perform a series of 2D isothermal viscous hydrodynamical simulations within a shearing box prescription using the Eulerian grid code Athena++. We co-evolve the embedded BHs with the gas keeping track of the energetic dissipation and torquing of the BBH by gas gravitation and inertial forces. To probe the dependence of capture on the initial conditions, we discuss a suite of 345 simulations spanning BBH impact parameter (b) and local AGN disc density (ρ0). We identify a clear region in b − ρ0 space where gas assisted BBH capture is efficient. We find that the presence of gas leads to strong energetic dissipation during close encounters between unbound BHs, forming stably bound eccentric BBHs. We find that the gas dissipation during close encounters increases for systems with increased disc density and deeper periapsis passages r p, fitting a power law such that |$\Delta E \propto \rho _0^{\alpha }r_{\mathrm{p}}^{\beta }$|⁠ , where {α, β} = {1.01 ± 0.04, −0.43 ± 0.03}. Alternatively, the gas dissipation is approximately Δ E  = 4.3 M d v H v p, where M d is the mass of a single BH minidisc just prior to the encounter when the binary separation is 2 r H (two binary Hill radii), v H and v p are the relative BH velocities at 2 r H and at the first closest approach, respectively. We derive a prescription for capture which can be used in semi-analytical models of AGN. We do not find the dissipative dynamics observed in these systems to be in agreement with the simple gas dynamical friction models often used in the literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

NGC 613 is a nearby barred spiral galaxy with a nuclear ring. Exploiting high spatial resolution (≈20 pc) Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array 12CO(1–0) observations, we study the giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in the nuclear ring and its vicinity, identifying 158 spatially and spectrally resolved GMCs. The GMC sizes (R c) are comparable to those of the clouds in the Milky Way (MW) disc, but their gas masses, observed linewidths (σobs,los), and gas mass surface densities are larger. The GMC size–linewidth relation (⁠|$\sigma _{\mathrm{obs,los}}\propto R_{\mathrm{c}}^{0.77}$|⁠) is steeper than that of the clouds of the MW disc and centre, and the GMCs are on average only marginally gravitationally bound (with a mean virial parameter 〈αobs,vir〉 ≈ 1.7). We discuss the possible origins of the steep size–linewidth relation and enhanced observed linewidths of the clouds and suggest that a combination of mechanisms such as stellar feedback, gas accretion, and cloud–cloud collisions, as well as the gas inflows driven by the large-scale bar, may play a role. Although flux variability is one of the defining properties of accretion flows on to supermassive black holes, its dependence on physical parameters such as the mass of the compact object and the Eddington ratio remains under discussion. In this paper, we address this issue using the structure function statistic to measure the variability at X-ray wavelengths of a sample of optically selected QSOs with available black hole masses and Eddington ratios. We present a new Bayesian methodology for estimating the structure function tailored to the Poisson nature of the X-ray data. This is applied to 15 548 SDSS DRQ16 QSOs with repeat observations in the XMM – Newton archive and/or the SRG/eROSITA All Sky Survey. The X-ray structure function monotonically increases to time intervals of about 10–15 yrs, consistent with scenarios in which instabilities of the accretion disc contribute to the X-ray variability on long time-scales. Additionally, there is evidence that the amplitude of the stochastic X-ray flux variations rises with decreasing black hole mass and Eddington ratio. This finding imposes stringent constraints on empirical models of Active Galactic Nuclei variability derived from local samples, emphasizing the significance of high-redshift population studies for comprehending the stochastic flux variations in active black holes. Accretion disc winds can leave active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and interact with the interstellar medium (ISM) of their host galaxies. We perform two-dimensional numerical simulations to investigate the interaction of AGN winds and ISM. We study the properties of outflows in the 1–1000 pc region under different gravitational potentials and ISM gas densities, and compare these ionized outflows with the observed warm absorbers (WAs). We find that AGN winds drag the ISM and transfer their momentum/energy to the ISM. The properties of winds depend on the gas density of the initial ISM. The higher the initial ISM density, the lower the wind speed, and the narrower the opening angle of the winds. For the case of ρ0 = 10−25 g cm−3, the winds have the strongest intensity at the outer boundary. They can blow the ISM gas, giving feedback on star formation and galaxy evolution. We also find that the interaction of AGN winds and ISM can generate WAs in certain conditions and AGN winds play some roles in generating WAs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work we used a sample of 20 variable active galactic nuclei at 0.3 < z < 0.8 from the Ultra-VISTA survey to test whether their emission in the near-infrared (NIR) is consistent with emission from the dusty torus or the accretion disc, and whether the radius–luminosity relation found for local sources, is also seen when we consider sources from our sample. We carried out a spectral energy distribution analysis and conclude that 14 of the 20 sources have a variable component dominated by the dusty torus, and four have a variable component dominated by the accretion disc and two sources give uncertain results. Correcting for the disc contamination in the observed-frame Ks band, however, allowed us to determine dust lags for 13 sources after performing cross-correlation analysis. Special care was taken to consider lags that were not biased by seasonal gaps. Our determined lags are systematically found below the radius–luminosity relationship determined for local sources. Following previous works, we introduce an empirical relation that corrects lags by the rest-frame wavelength of the band that samples the dust emission, as shorter wavelengths arise from hotter regions of the torus. When the correction is introduced, our results are consistent with previous findings. We finally discuss whether other intrinsic parameters might also contribute to this effect and how these corrections will impact future large optical and NIR surveys. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In terms of the variable nature of normal active galaxy nuclei (AGN) and luminous quasars, a so-called flux variation gradient (FVG) method has been widely utilized to estimate the underlying non-variable host galaxy fluxes. The FVG method assumes an invariable AGN color, but this assumption has been questioned by the intrinsic color variation of quasars and local Seyfert galaxies. Here, using an up-to-date thermal fluctuation model to simulate multi-wavelength AGN variability, we theoretically demonstrate that the FVG method generally overestimates the host galaxy flux; that is, it is more significant for brighter AGN/quasars. Furthermore, we observationally confirm that the FVG method indeed overestimates the host galaxy flux by comparing it to that estimated through other independent methods. Alongside the recent increase in discoveries of tidal disruption events (TDEs) have come an increasing number of ambiguous nuclear transients (ANTs). These ANTs are characterized by hot blackbody-like UV/optical spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and smooth photometric evolution, often with hard power law-like X-ray emission. ANTs are likely exotic TDEs or smooth flares originating in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). While their emission in the UV/optical and X-ray has been relatively well-explored, their infrared (IR) emission has not been studied in detail. Here, we use the NEOWISE mission and its low-cadence mapping of the entire sky to study mid-IR dust reprocessing echoes of ANTs. We study 19 ANTs, finding significant MIR flares in 18 objects for which we can estimate an IR luminosity and temperature evolution. The dust reprocessing echoes show a wide range in IR luminosities (∼1042–1045 erg s−1) with blackbody temperatures largely consistent with sublimation temperature of graphite grains. Excluding the two sources possibly associated with luminous supernovae (ASASSN-15lh and ASASSN-17jz), the dust covering fractions (f c ) for detected IR flares lie between 0.05 and 0.91, with a mean of f c = 0.29 for all ANTs (including limits) and f c = 0.38 ± 0.04 for detections. These covering fractions are much higher than optically selected TDEs and similar to AGNs. We interpret the high covering fractions in ANT host galaxies as evidence for the presence of a dusty torus. We report on the SRG /eROSITA detection of ultra-soft (⁠|$kT=47^{+5}_{-5}$|  eV) X-ray emission (L X = |$2.5^{+0.6}_{-0.5} \times 10^{43}$|  erg s−1) from the tidal disruption event (TDE) candidate AT 2022dsb ∼14 d before peak optical brightness. As the optical luminosity increases after the eROSITA detection, then the 0.2–2 keV observed flux decays, decreasing by a factor of ∼39 over the 19 d after the initial X-ray detection. Multi-epoch optical spectroscopic follow-up observations reveal transient broad Balmer emission lines and a broad He  ii 4686 Å emission complex with respect to the pre-outburst spectrum. Despite the early drop in the observed X-ray flux, the He  ii 4686  Å complex is still detected for ∼40 d after the optical peak, suggesting the persistence of an obscured hard ionizing source in the system. Three outflow signatures are also detected at early times: (i) blueshifted H α emission lines in a pre-peak optical spectrum, (ii) transient radio emission, and (iii) blueshifted Ly α absorption lines. The joint evolution of this early-time X-ray emission, the He  ii 4686 Å complex, and these outflow signatures suggests that the X-ray emitting disc (formed promptly in this TDE) is still present after optical peak, but may have been enshrouded by optically thick debris, leading to the X-ray faintness in the months after the disruption. If the observed early-time properties in this TDE are not unique to this system, then other TDEs may also be X-ray bright at early times and become X-ray faint upon being veiled by debris launched shortly after the onset of circularization. In this work, we investigated the nitrogen and oxygen abundances in a sample of galaxies with Low Ionization Nuclear Emission Regions (LINERs) in their nucleus. Optical spectroscopic data (3600 – 10 000 Å) of 40 LINERs from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies (MaNGAs) survey were considered. Only objects classified as retired galaxies, that is, whose main ionization sources are post-Asymptotic Giant Branch (pAGB) stars, were selected. The abundance estimates were obtained through detailed photoionization models built with the cloudy code to reproduce a set of observational emission line intensities ratios of the sample. Our results show that LINERs have oxygen and nitrogen abundances in the ranges of |$\rm 8.0 \: \lesssim \: 12+\log (O/H) \: \lesssim \: 9.0$| (mean value 8.74 ± 0.27) and |$\rm 7.6 \: \lesssim \: 12+\log (N/H) \: \lesssim \: 8.5$| (mean value 8.05 ± 0.25), respectively. About 70 per cent of the sample have oversolar O/H and N/H abundances. Our abundance estimates are in consonance with those for Seyfert 2 nuclei and H  ii regions with the highest metallicity, indicating that these distinct object classes show similar enrichment of the interstellar medium (ISM). The LINERs in our sample are located in the higher N/O region of the N/O versus O/H diagram, showing an unexpected negative correlation between these two parameters. These results suggest that these LINERs mainly exhibit a secondary nitrogen production and could be acting some other mechanisms that deviate them from the usual theoretical secondary nitrogen production curve and the H  ii regions observations. However, we did not find any evidence in our data able to support the literature suggested mechanisms. Reverberation mapping is the leading technique used to measure direct black hole masses outside of the local Universe. Additionally, reverberation measurements calibrate secondary mass-scaling relations used to estimate single-epoch virial black hole masses. The Australian Dark Energy Survey (OzDES) conducted one of the first multi-object reverberation mapping surveys, monitoring 735 AGN up to z ∼ 4, over 6 years. The limited temporal coverage of the OzDES data has hindered recovery of individual measurements for some classes of sources, particularly those with shorter reverberation lags or lags that fall within campaign season gaps. To alleviate this limitation, we perform a stacking analysis of the cross-correlation functions of sources with similar intrinsic properties to recover average composite reverberation lags. This analysis leads to the recovery of average lags in each redshift-luminosity bin across our sample. We present the average lags recovered for the Hβ, Mg  ii , and C  iv samples, as well as multiline measurements for redshift bins where two lines are accessible. The stacking analysis is consistent with the Radius–Luminosity relations for each line. Our results for the Hβ sample demonstrate that stacking has the potential to improve upon constraints on the R – L relation, which have been derived only from individual source measurements until now. Rapid formation of supermassive black holes occurs in dense nuclear star clusters that are initially gas-dominated. Stellar-mass black hole remnants of the most massive cluster stars sink into the core, where a massive runaway black hole forms as a consequence of combined effects of repeated mergers and Eddington-limited gas accretion. Sizes of narrow emission line regions (NLRs) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) could be estimated by [O  iii ] line luminosity L O3 through the known R NLRs− L O3 empirical relations. Unfortunately, it is not convenient to test the R NLRs− L O3 empirical relations through structure properties of spatially resolved NLRs of large samples of AGNs. In this manuscript, a method is proposed to test the |$R_{\mathrm{ NLRs}}\!\!-\!\!L_{\mathrm{ O3}}^{\sim 0.25}$| empirical relations for AGN NLRs through Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Type-2 AGNs having few orientation effects on NLR sizes expected by the AGN unified model, after considering sizes R fib of SDSS fibre-covered regions. Comparing R fib and R NLRs estimated by L O3, Type-2 AGNs with R fib > R NLRs (Sample-II) and with R fib < R NLRs (Sample-I) should have different physical properties of NLRs. Accepting electron density gradients in AGN NLRs, statistically higher electron densities (traced by lower flux ratio R S2 of [S  ii ] λ6717 Å to [S  ii ] λ6731 Å) could be expected for the Type-2 AGNs in the Sample-I. Then, through the collected 1062 SDSS Type-2 AGNs in the Sample-I and 3658 SDSS Type-2 AGNs in the Sample-II, statistically lower R S2 for the Type-2 AGNs in the Sample-I can be confirmed with confidence level higher than 5σ, even after considering necessary effects. Therefore, the results in this manuscript can provide strong clues to support that the reported |$R_{\mathrm{ NLRs}}~\propto ~L_{\mathrm{ O3}}^{0.25}$| empirical relation is preferred to estimate NLR sizes of SDSS AGNs through SDSS fibre spectroscopic results, and also to support the commonly expected electron density gradients in AGN NLRs. The origins of quasi-periodic eruptions (QPEs) are poorly understood, although most theoretical explanations invoke an accretion disc around a supermassive black hole. The gas and stellar environments in the galactic nuclei of these sources are also poorly constrained. In this paper, we present an analysis of archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images to study the narrow-line [O  iii ] emission in the QPE source GSN 069. We find strong evidence for a compact nuclear [O  iii ] emission region of size ≲ 35 pc, overlaid on top of extended [O  iii ] emission up to 1 kpc away from the nucleus. The age of the accretion system is estimated to be between 10 and 100 yr. The [O  iii ] luminosity of the compact region was measured to be |$(2.1 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{40}\, \rm erg\, s^{-1}$|⁠. Based on cloudy simulations, we constrain that the [O  iii ] emitting gas has a hydrogen number density in the range |$2 \times 10^{3} \lt n_{\rm H} \lesssim 10^{8}\, \rm cm^{-3}$| and volume filling factor f V < 4 × 10−3. We suggest that the dense gas in the nuclear region of GSN 069 originates from molecular clouds (with total mass |$\gtrsim 3 \times 10^{3}\, {\rm M}_{\odot }$|⁠), which are freshly ionized by the soft X-ray photons from the accretion disc. We predict possible evolution of the compact narrow-line region on emission-line diagnostic diagrams, and hence future HST or integral-field unit observations can be used to further pin down the age of this puzzling system. We report sub-parsec-scale observations of the 321 GHz H2O emission line in the radio galaxy NGC 1052. The H2O line emitter size is constrained in <0.6 mas distributed on the continuum core component. The brightness temperature exceeding 106 K and the intensity variation indicate certain evidence for maser emission. The maser spectrum consists of redshifted and blueshifted velocity components spanning ∼400 km s−1, separated by a local minimum around the systemic velocity of the galaxy. The spatial distribution of maser components shows a velocity gradient along the jet direction, implying that the population-inverted gas is driven by the jets interacting with the molecular torus. We identified a significant change of the maser spectra between two sessions separated by 14 days. The maser profile showed a radial velocity drift of 127 ± 13 km s−1 yr−1 implying inward gravitational acceleration at 5000 Schwarzschild radii. The results demonstrate the feasibility of future very long baseline interferometry observations to resolve the jet–torus interacting region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we presented a detailed analysis of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey optical spectrum of a new sub-kpc scale dual AGN candidate SDSS J222428.53+261423.2 (=SDSS J2224). The target is one of the few AGNs with all the optical narrow emission lines characterized by double-peaked profiles and with peak separations in velocity units of about 930 km s−1. If the double-peaked narrow emission lines (DPNELs) are due to a dual AGN in SDSS J2224, the estimated physical separation between the two cores is about 500 pc. Meanwhile, three alternative explanations are also discussed in this paper, however, we can not find solid evidence to completely rule them out. Our results support the presence of a sub-kpc dual AGN with DPNELs in all lines, indicating a key episode of galaxy merging evolution at sub-kpc scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nuclear star clusters (NSCs) are dense star clusters located at the centre of galaxies spanning a wide range of masses and morphologies. Analysing NSC occupation statistics in different environments provides an invaluable window into investigating early conditions of high-density star formation and mass assembly in clusters and group galaxies. We use HST/ACS deep imaging to obtain a catalogue of dwarf galaxies in two galaxy clusters in the Shapley supercluster: the central cluster Abell 3558 and the northern Abell 1736a. The Shapley region is an ideal laboratory to study nucleation as it stands as the highest mass concentration in the nearby Universe. We investigate the NSC occurrence in quiescent dwarf galaxies as faint as MI  = −10 mag and compare it with all other environments where nucleation data is available. We use galaxy cluster/group halo mass as a proxy for the environment and employ a Bayesian logistic regression framework to model the nucleation fraction (fn) as a function of galaxy luminosity and environment. We find a notably high fn in Abell 3558: at MI ≈ −13.1 mag, half the galaxies in the cluster host NSCs. This is higher than in the Virgo and Fornax clusters but comparable to the Coma Cluster. On the other hand, the fn in Abell 1736a is relatively lower, comparable to groups in the local volume. We find that the probability of nucleation varies with galaxy luminosity remarkably similarly in galaxy clusters. The mass (M BH) of a supermassive black hole (SMBH) can be measured using spatially resolved kinematics of the region where the SMBH dominates gravitationally. The most reliable measurements are those that resolve the smallest physical scales around the SMBHs. We consider here three metrics to compare the physical scales probed by kinematic tracers dominated by rotation: the radius of the innermost detected kinematic tracer R min normalized by the SMBH's Schwarzschild radius (R Schw ≡ 2 GM BH/ c 2, where G is the gravitational constant and c the speed of light), sphere-of-influence (SOI) radius (⁠|$R_\mathrm{SOI}\equiv GM_\mathrm{BH}/\sigma _\mathrm{e}^2$|⁠ , where σe is the stellar velocity dispersion within the galaxy's effective radius), and equality radius [the radius R eq at which the SMBH mass equals the enclosed stellar mass, M BH = M *(R eq), where M *(R) is the stellar mass enclosed within the radius R ]. All metrics lead to analogous simple relations between R min and the highest circular velocity probed V c. Adopting these metrics to compare the SMBH mass measurements using molecular gas kinematics to those using megamaser kinematics, we demonstrate that the best molecular gas measurements resolve material that is physically closer to the SMBHs in terms of R Schw but is slightly farther in terms of R SOI and R eq. However, molecular gas observations of nearby galaxies using the most extended configurations of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array can resolve the SOI comparably well and thus enable SMBH mass measurements as precise as the best megamaser measurements. Presently, it is unclear whether the Eddington ratio (λ) and radiative efficiency (ε) depend on a supermassive black hole's (SMBH's) redshift z and mass M BH. We attempt to resolve this issue using published data for 132   000 SMBHs with M BH ≥ 107 Msun (solar masses) at ∼0.1 <  z  < 2.4 covering ∼10 billion years of cosmic time, with M BH determined using Mg  ii lines and bolometric luminosities L bol based on a weighted mean of L bol from two or more monochromatic luminosities and a single uniformly applied correction factor. The SMBHs are sorted into seven M BH bins separated from each other by half an order of magnitude. The λ and z data in each bin are subjected to spline regression analysis. The results unambiguously show that for similar-size SMBHs, λ decreases as z decreases, and that for a given redshift, larger SMBHs have a lower λ. These findings require that either an SMBH's accretion rate and/or its radiative efficiency be a function of z and M BH and, in the context of the Bondi accretion model, imply that radiative efficiency is an inverse function of z and M BH. These findings suggest that SMBHs become less efficient (higher ε) in accreting gases as the ambient gas density decreases with z and that larger SMBHs are more efficient (lower ε) than smaller ones. The results leave little doubt that the current widespread practice of assigning ε a standard value is untenable and gives erroneous estimates of accretion rates and growth times of SMBHs.
