1. A Sim-to-Real Vision-based Lane Keeping System for a 1:10-scale Autonomous Vehicle

Abstract: In recent years, several competitions have highlighted the need to investigate vision-based solutions to address scenarios with functional insufficiencies in perception, world modeling and localization. This article presents the Vision-based Lane Keeping System (VbLKS) developed by the DEI-Unipd Team within the context of the Bosch Future Mobility Challenge 2022. The main contribution lies in a Simulation-to-Reality (Sim2Real) GPS-denied VbLKS for a 1:10-scale autonomous vehicle. In this VbLKS, the input to a tailored Pure Pursuit (PP) based control strategy, namely the Lookahead Heading Error (LHE), is estimated at a constant lookahead distance employing a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). A training strategy for a compact CNN is proposed, emphasizing data generation and augmentation on simulated camera images from a 3D Gazebo simulator, and enabling real-time operation on low-level hardware. A tailored PP-based lateral controller equipped with a derivative action and a PP-based velocity reference generation are implemented. Tuning ranges are established through a systematic time-delay stability analysis. Validation in a representative controlled laboratory setting is provided., Comment: 16 pages, 23 figures

2. Simulating Non-Markovian Dynamics in Multidimensional Electronic Spectroscopy via Quantum Algorithm

Abstract: Including the effect of the molecular environment in the numerical modeling of time-resolved electronic spectroscopy remains an important challenge in computational spectroscopy. In this contribution, we present a general approach for the simulation of the optical response of multi-chromophore systems in a structured environment and its implementation as a quantum algorithm. A key step of the procedure is the pseudomode embedding of the system-environment problem resulting in a finite set of quantum states evolving according to a Markovian quantum master equation. This formulation is then solved by a collision model integrated into a quantum algorithm designed to simulate linear and nonlinear response functions. The workflow is validated by simulating spectra for the prototypical excitonic dimer interacting with fast (memoryless) and finite-memory environments. The results demonstrate, on the one hand, the potential of the pseudomode embedding for simulating the dynamical features of nonlinear spectroscopy, including lineshape, spectral diffusion, and relaxations along delay times. On the other hand, the explicit synthesis of quantum circuits provides a fully quantum simulation protocol of nonlinear spectroscopy harnessing the efficient quantum simulation of many-body dynamics promised by the future generation of fault-tolerant quantum computers.

This study describes the impact of such comorbidities on the healthcare service usage and related costs in a country with universal health coverage, basing on a large cohort of elderly patients with OLD and employing real-world data.Methods: We carried out a retrospective cohort study on a large population of elderly (age > 64 years) patients with OLD served by a Local Health Unit in northern Italy. Their comorbidities were assessed using the clinical diagnoses assigned by the Adjusted Clinical Group (ACG) system to individual patients by combining different information flows. Correlations between number of comorbidities and total annual healthcare service usage and costs were examined with Spearman’s test. Regression models were applied to analyze the associations between the above-mentioned variables, adjusting for age and sex.Results: All types of healthcare service usage (access to emergency care; number of outpatient visits; number of hospital admissions) and pharmacy costs increased significantly with the number of comorbidities. Average total annual costs increased steadily with the number of comorbidities, ranging from € 1158.84 with no comorbidities up to € 9666.60 with 6 comorbidities or more. Poisson regression analyses showed an independent association between the number of comorbidities and the use of every type of healthcare service.Conclusion: These results based on real-world data provide evidence that the burden of care for OLD patients related to their comorbidities is independent of and in addition to the burden related to OLD alone and is strongly dependent on the number of comorbidities, suggesting a holistic approach to multimorbid patients with OLD is the most sound public health strategy.Keywords: comorbidities, obstructive lung disease, healthcare costs, healthcare service usage

Abstract: DarkSide-20k (DS-20k) is a dark matter detection experiment under construction at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Italy. It utilises ~100 t of low radioactivity argon from an underground source (UAr) in its inner detector, with half serving as target in a dual-phase time projection chamber (TPC). The UAr cryogenics system must maintain stable thermodynamic conditions throughout the experiment's lifetime of >10 years. Continuous removal of impurities and radon from the UAr is essential for maximising signal yield and mitigating background. We are developing an efficient and powerful cryogenics system with a gas purification loop with a target circulation rate of 1000 slpm. Central to its design is a condenser operated with liquid nitrogen which is paired with a gas heat exchanger cascade, delivering a combined cooling power of >8 kW. Here we present the design choices in view of the DS-20k requirements, in particular the condenser's working principle and the cooling control, and we show test results obtained with a dedicated benchmarking platform at CERN and LNGS. We find that the thermal efficiency of the recirculation loop, defined in terms of nitrogen consumption per argon flow rate, is 95 % and the pressure in the test cryostat can be maintained within $\pm$(0.1-0.2) mbar. We further detail a 5-day cool-down procedure of the test cryostat, maintaining a cooling rate typically within -2 K/h, as required for the DS-20k inner detector. Additionally, we assess the circuit's flow resistance, and the heat transfer capabilities of two heat exchanger geometries for argon phase change, used to provide gas for recirculation. We conclude by discussing how our findings influence the finalisation of the system design, including necessary modifications to meet requirements and ongoing testing activities., Comment: 45 pages, 24 figures

Abstract: The dual-phase liquid argon time projection chamber is presently one of the leading technologies to search for dark matter particles with masses below 10 GeV/c$^2$. This was demonstrated by the DarkSide-50 experiment with approximately 50 kg of low-radioactivity liquid argon as target material. The next generation experiment DarkSide-20k, currently under construction, will use 1,000 times more argon and is expected to start operation in 2027. Based on the DarkSide-50 experience, here we assess the DarkSide-20k sensitivity to models predicting light dark matter particles, including Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) and sub-GeV/c$^2$ particles interacting with electrons in argon atoms. With one year of data, a sensitivity improvement to dark matter interaction cross-sections by at least one order of magnitude with respect to DarkSide-50 is expected for all these models. A sensitivity to WIMP--nucleon interaction cross-sections below $1\times10^{-42}$ cm$^2$ is achievable for WIMP masses above 800 MeV/c$^2$. With 10 years exposure, the neutrino fog can be reached for WIMP masses around 5 GeV/c$^2$., Comment: submitted to Nature Communications

Abstract: Experiments aimed at direct searches for WIMP dark matter require highly effective reduction of backgrounds and control of any residual radioactive contamination. In particular, neutrons interacting with atomic nuclei represent an important class of backgrounds due to the expected similarity of a WIMP-nucleon interaction, so that such experiments often feature a dedicated neutron detector surrounding the active target volume. In the context of the development of DarkSide-20k detector at INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS), several R&D projects were conceived and developed for the creation of a new hybrid material rich in both hydrogen and gadolinium nuclei to be employed as an essential element of the neutron detector. Thanks to its very high cross-section for neutron capture, gadolinium is one of the most widely used elements in neutron detectors, while the hydrogen-rich material is instrumental in efficiently moderating the neutrons. In this paper results from one of the R&Ds are presented. In this effort the new hybrid material was obtained as a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix, loaded with gadolinium oxide in the form of nanoparticles. We describe its realization, including all phases of design, purification, construction, characterization, and determination of mechanical properties of the new material.

7. From Stochastic Hamiltonian to Quantum Simulation: Exploring Memory Effects in Exciton Dynamics

Abstract: The unraveling of open quantum system dynamics in terms of stochastic quantum trajectories offers a picture of open system dynamics that consistently considers memory effects stemming from the finite correlation time of environment fluctuations. These fluctuations significantly influence the coherence and energy transport properties of excitonic systems. When their correlation time is comparable to the timescale of the Hamiltonian evolution, it leads to the departure of open system dynamics from the Markovian limit. In this work, we leverage the unraveling of exciton dynamics through stochastic Hamiltonian propagators to design quantum circuits that simulate exciton transport, capturing finite memory effects. In addition to enabling the synthesis of parametrizable quantum circuits, stochastic unitary propagators provide a transparent framework for investigating non-Markovian effects on exciton transport. Our analysis reveals a nuanced relationship between environment correlation time and transport efficiency, identifying a regime of "memory-assisted" quantum transport where time-correlated fluctuations allow the system to reach higher efficiency. However, this property is not universal and can only be realized in conjunction with specific features of the system Hamiltonian.

Abstract: Recent advances in pre-trained language modeling have facilitated significant progress across various natural language processing (NLP) tasks. Word masking during model training constitutes a pivotal component of language modeling in architectures like BERT. However, the prevalent method of word masking relies on random selection, potentially disregarding domain-specific linguistic attributes. In this article, we introduce an innovative masking approach leveraging genre and topicality information to tailor language models to specialized domains. Our method incorporates a ranking process that prioritizes words based on their significance, subsequently guiding the masking procedure. Experiments conducted using continual pre-training within the legal domain have underscored the efficacy of our approach on the LegalGLUE benchmark in the English language. Pre-trained language models and code are freely available for use.

Abstract: Large-area next-generation physics experiments rely on using Silicon Photo-Multiplier (SiPM) devices to detect single photons, which trigger charge avalanches. The noise mechanism of external cross-talk occurs when secondary photons produced during a charge avalanche escape from an SiPM and trigger other devices within a detector system. This work presents measured spectra of the secondary photons emitted from the Hamamatsu VUV4 and Fondazione Bruno Kessler VUV-HD3 SiPMs stimulated by laser light, near operational voltages. The work describes the Microscope for the Injection and Emission of Light (MIEL) setup, which is an experimental apparatus constructed for this purpose. Measurements have been performed at a range of over-voltage values and temperatures from 86~K to 293~K. The number of photons produced per avalanche at the source are calculated from the measured spectra and determined to be 40$\pm$9 and 61$\pm$11 photons produced per avalanche for the VUV4 and VUV-HD3 respectively at 4 volts over-voltage. No significant temperature dependence is observed within the measurement uncertainties. Abstract: The mouse pathogen Citrobacter rodentium is utilized as a model organism for studying infections caused by the human pathogens enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) and enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) and to elucidate mechanisms of mucosal immunity. In response to C. rodentium infection, innate lymphoid cells and T cells secrete interleukin (IL)-22, a cytokine that promotes mucosal barrier function. IL-22 plays a pivotal role in enabling mice to survive and recover from C. rodentium infection, although the exact mechanisms involved remain incompletely understood. Here, we investigated whether particular components of the host response downstream of IL-22 contribute to the cytokine's protective effects during C. rodentium infection. In line with previous research, mice lacking the IL-22 gene (Il22-/- mice) were highly susceptible to C. rodentium infection. To elucidate the role of specific antimicrobial proteins modulated by IL-22, we infected the following knockout mice: S100A9-/- (calprotectin), Lcn2-/- (lipocalin-2), Reg3b-/- (Reg3β), Reg3g-/- (Reg3γ), and C3-/- (C3). All knockout mice tested displayed a considerable level of resistance to C. rodentium infection, and none phenocopied the lethality observed in Il22-/- mice. By investigating another arm of the IL-22 response, we observed that C. rodentium-infected Il22-/- mice exhibited an overall decrease in gene expression related to intestinal barrier integrity as well as significantly elevated colonic inflammation, gut permeability, and pathogen levels in the spleen. Taken together, these results indicate that host resistance to lethal C. rodentium infection may depend on multiple antimicrobial responses acting in concert, or that other IL-22-regulated processes, such as tissue repair and maintenance of epithelial integrity, play crucial roles in host defense to attaching and effacing pathogens.

Abstract: Astrocytes, the most abundant glial cell type in the brain, are underrepresented in traditional cortical organoid models due to the delayed onset of cortical gliogenesis. Here we introduce a new glia-enriched cortical organoid model that exhibits accelerated astrogliogenesis. We demonstrated that induction of a gliogenic switch in a subset of progenitors enabled the rapid derivation of astroglial cells, which account for 25-31% of the cell population within 8-10 weeks of differentiation. Intracerebral transplantation of these organoids reliably generated a diverse repertoire of cortical neurons and anatomical subclasses of human astrocytes. Spatial transcriptome profiling identified layer-specific expression patterns among distinct subclasses of astrocytes within organoid transplants. Using an in vivo acute neuroinflammation model, we identified a subpopulation of astrocytes that rapidly activates pro-inflammatory pathways upon cytokine stimulation. Additionally, we demonstrated that CD38 signaling has a crucial role in mediating metabolic and mitochondrial stress in reactive astrocytes. This model provides a robust platform for investigating human astrocyte function.

Abstract: The study aimed to test if Briganti’s 2012 nomogram could be associated with the risk of prostate cancer (PCa) progression in European Association of Urology (EAU) intermediate-risk patients treated with robotic surgery. From January 2013 to December 2021, 527 consecutive patients belonging to the EAU intermediate-risk class were selected. Briganti’s 2012 nomogram, which predicts the risk of pelvic lymph node invasion (PLNI), was assessed as a continuous and dichotomous variable that categorized up to the median of 3.0%. Disease progression defined as biochemical recurrence and/or metastatic progression was evaluated by Cox proportional hazards (univariate and multivariate analysis). After a median follow-up of 95.0 months (95% confidence interval [CI]: 78.5–111.4), PCa progression occurred in 108 (20.5%) patients who were more likely to present with an unfavorable nomogram risk score, independently by the occurrence of unfavorable pathology including tumor upgrading and upstaging as well as PLNI. Accordingly, as Briganti’s 2012 risk score increased, patients were more likely to experience disease progression (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.060; 95% CI: 1.021–1.100; P = 0.002); moreover, it also remained significant when dichotomized above a risk score of 3.0% (HR = 2.052; 95% CI: 1.298–3.243; P < 0.0001) after adjustment for clinical factors. In the studied risk population, PCa progression was independently predicted by Briganti’s 2012 nomogram. Specifically, we found that patients were more likely to experience disease progression as their risk score increased. Because of the significant association between risk score and tumor behavior, the nomogram can further stratify intermediate-risk PCa patients, who represent a heterogeneous risk category for which different treatment paradigms exist.

Abstract: Background and objective: More than 10% of patients with negative clinical metastatic status (cN0M0) on conventional imaging for prostate cancer (PCa) harbor lymph node involvement (pN+) at final pathology following radical prostatectomy (RP) and lymphadenectomy. Our aim was to assess outcomes of initial observation for cN0M0 pN+ PCa and identify prognostic factors that may help in clinical decision-making. Methods: We performed a retrospective multicenter study of patients with cN0M0 PCa on conventional imaging (computed tomography and/or magnetic resonance imaging, and a bone scan) who were found to have pN+ disease at RP between 2000 and 2021. Biochemical recurrence (BCR) and systemic progression/recurrence were the primary outcomes. Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox proportional hazards model were used for survival and multivariate analysis. Key findings and limitations: A total of 469 men were included in this retrospective multicenter trial. Median prostate-specific antigen (PSA) was 10.1 ng/ml (interquartile range [IQR] 6.6–18.0). Among these patients, 56% had grade group ≥4, 53.7% had stage ≥pT3b, 42.6% had positive margins, and 19.6% had PSA persistence. The median number of positive nodes and of nodes removed were 1 (IQR 1–3) and 20 (14–28), respectively. At median follow-up of 41 mo, 48.5% experienced BCR. The 5-yr BCR-free survival rate was 31.7% (95% confidence interval [CI] 26.33–37.1%). Salvage treatments were needed in 211 patients and included radiotherapy (RT; n = 53), RT + androgen deprivation therapy (ADT; n = 88), ADT alone (n = 68), and salvage lymphadenectomy (n = 2). The 5-yr estimated survival rates were 66.3% (95% CI 60.4–72.1) for metastasis-free survival, 97.7% (95% CI 95.5–99.8%) for cancer-specific survival, and 95.3% (95% CI 92.4–98.1%) for overall survival. On multivariable analysis, PSA persistence was an independent predictor of BCR (odds ratio [OR] 51.8, 95% CI 12.2–219.2), exit from observation (OR 8.5, 95% CI 4.4–16.5), and systemic progression (OR 3.0, 95% CI 1.771–4.971). Conclusions: Initial observation in the management of pN+ cN0M0 PCa is feasible and has excellent survival rates in the intermediate term. Patients with worse disease features, especially PSA persistence, have a higher likelihood of recurrence and progression and may be candidates for more aggressive upfront management. Patient summary: We investigated the value of initial observation for men with prostate cancer with negative scan findings for metastasis who were then found to have positive lymph nodes after surgery to remove the prostate. Our results show that initial observation is a good option for patients with less aggressive prostate cancer features.

Abstract: The direct search for dark matter in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMP) is performed by detecting nuclear recoils (NR) produced in a target material from the WIMP elastic scattering. A promising experimental strategy for direct dark matter search employs argon dual-phase time projection chambers (TPC). One of the advantages of the TPC is the capability to detect both the scintillation and charge signals produced by NRs. Furthermore, the existence of a drift electric field in the TPC breaks the rotational symmetry: the angle between the drift field and the momentum of the recoiling nucleus can potentially affect the charge recombination probability in liquid argon and then the relative balance between the two signal channels. This fact could make the detector sensitive to the directionality of the WIMP-induced signal, enabling unmistakable annual and daily modulation signatures for future searches aiming for discovery. The Recoil Directionality (ReD) experiment was designed to probe for such directional sensitivity. The TPC of ReD was irradiated with neutrons at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Sud, and data were taken with 72 keV NRs of known recoil directions. The direction-dependent liquid argon charge recombination model by Cataudella et al. was adopted and a likelihood statistical analysis was performed, which gave no indications of significant dependence of the detector response to the recoil direction. The aspect ratio R of the initial ionization cloud is estimated to be 1.037 +/- 0.027 and the upper limit is R < 1.072 with 90% confidence level, Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, submitted to Eur. Abstract: Large-scale low-background detectors are increasingly used in rare-event searches as experimental collaborations push for enhanced sensitivity. However, building such detectors, in practice, creates an abundance of radioassay data especially during the conceptual phase of an experiment when hundreds of materials are screened for radiopurity. A tool is needed to manage and make use of the radioassay screening data to quantitatively assess detector design options. We have developed a Materials Database Application for the nEXO experiment to serve this purpose. This paper describes this database, explains how it functions, and discusses how it streamlines the design of the experiment.

Abstract: Abstract Goal contagion, the tendency to adopt others' goals, significantly impacts cognitive processes, which gains particular importance in the emerging field of human–robot interactions. The present study explored how observing human versus robotic actions affects preference and memory. Series of objects undergoing either human or robotic grasping actions together with static (no action) objects were presented, while participants indicated their preference for each object. After a short delay, their memory for grasped, static and new (unstudied) stimuli was tested. Human actions enhanced preference and subsequent recollection of objects, more than robotic actions. In the context of human action, static objects were also perceived as more familiar at recognition. The goal contagion's influence on memory was found to be independent from its impact on preference. These findings highlight the critical role of human interaction in eliciting the impact of goal contagion on cognitive evaluations, memory engagement and the creation of detailed associative memories.

Abstract: The ‘prison school’ chronotope assumes the dual meaning of ‘school as prison’ and ‘school in prison’. The latter is investigated in this essay, focusing on the narrative strategies, forms, motifs and topoi from which the reality of the Italian penitentiary school is represented, above all through the point of view of writers who have been inside the prison environment in the role of teachers and educators. It also traces the history of this prison school writings particular subgenre, exploring its connections with the political, legal and cultural context, from the Unification of Italy to the present time, integrating literary criticism and the sociology of prison, special education and the pedagogy of deviance, the history of penitentiary law, educational and critical prison studies. Starting from De Amicis and Andreani, among others the works of Invernizzi, Valeriani, Malvezzi, Grimaldi, Albinati, Balzano, Tagliani, Verdone, Trovato, Parrella are studied, finally confirming the prevalence of short and hybrid forms that increasingly characterizes this literary genre.

Abstract: The article presents the latest results of studies of the events of the Mongol campaign against the Kingdom of Hungary in the Carpathian basin in 1241–42. Compared to the wealth of written sources, archaeology could not provide any serious evidence of the events of the Mongol campaign in Hungary for a long time. The only material evidence of the events of that time was the horizon of sporadic coin finds. However, for a long time there was no clear and reliable evidence of massacres and widespread destruction, which could be judged from the descriptions of contemporaries, often of an apocalyptic nature. Archaeology, studying the period of the Mongol campaigns, the youngest direction of Hungarian archaeology, which has become an independent discipline, and today is one of the most dynamically developing fields. However, it also has required a qualitative improvement in the applied approaches and methods. The full development of the archaeology of the Mongol conquest period is associated with the emergence of new sites as a result of recent targeted and planned studies.

Abstract: Abstract The inflow of CSF into perivascular spaces (PVS) in the brain is crucial for clearing waste molecules. Inefficiency in PVS flow leads to neurodegeneration. Failure of PVS flushing is associated with CSF flow impairment in the intracranial hydrodynamic condition of CSF hypo-pulsatility. However, enlarged PVS (ePVS), a finding indicative of PVS flow dysfunction, is also present in patients with derangement of CSF dynamics characterized by CSF hyper-pulsatility, which increases CSF flow. Intriguingly, two opposite intracranial hydrodynamic conditions would lead to the same result of impairing the PVS flushing. To investigate this issue, we assessed the subsistence of a dysfunctional interplay between CSF and PVS flows and, if the case, the mechanisms preventing a hyper-pulsatile brain from providing an effective PVS flushing. We analyzed the association between phase contrast MRI aqueductal CSF stroke volume (aqSV), a proxy of CSF pulsatility, and the burden of ePVS in chronic adult hydrocephalus, a disease involving a broad spectrum of intracranial hydrodynamics disturbances. In the 147 (85 males, 62 females) patients, the age at diagnosis ranged between 28 and 88 years (median 73 years). Ninety-seven patients had tri-ventriculomegaly and 50 tetra-ventriculomegaly. Abstract: ABSTRACT: The sensory characteristics of poultry products are crucial in defining their quality and widely influence consumer choices. Even though the scientific literature clearly indicates that for muscle foods the sensory profile is relevant in purchase decisions and overall acceptability, sensory evaluation has often been underestimated and considered complementary to instrumental and/or chemical assessments. Sensory analysis includes different types of validated tests (discriminative, descriptive, and affective), applied depending on the purpose of the research study, requiring special attention in the sample preparation phase, in particular for nonhomogeneous products such as poultry meat, requiring reproducible cutting, cooking and presentation to the tasters. The aim of this paper is to review, critically assess and discuss sensory methods, standardized procedures and sample preparation tailored for chicken meat, through the literature from 2000 to 2023, with a section dedicated to ethical aspects that must be carefully considered when designing a sensory protocol. The target readers are both the research and the business communities, as the information can be widely applied for quality control, to develop new food products, to understand or drive preferences or, for example, to assess potential sensory differences among chickens fed with different diets. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this review represents a useful first guide for those approaching the sensory analysis of chicken meat.

Abstract: Objetivo: No projeto de extensão “Doe vida: conscientização e incentivo à doação de órgãos e medula óssea”, da Universidade Estadual de Maringá, o objetivo foi conscientizar a população sobre a importância do transplante de medula óssea, desmistificar conceitos equivocados e incentivar a adesão ao cadastro em eventos públicos. Metodologia: No ano de 2024 foram realizadas campanhas de conscientização em dois eventos públicos, sendo eles a “Exposição Feira Agropecuária, Industrial e Comercial de Maringá (Expoingá)” e “Arena Sustentável Maringá”. As atividades desempenhadas nas campanhas foram realizadas por discentes de graduação e pós-graduação da UEM, acompanhadas da coordenadora. Foram utilizadas as seguintes estratégias: apresentação de vídeos explicativos, distribuição de folders, exposição de peças anatômicas de ossos, realização de dinâmicas interativas com premiações. Foi realizado a atualização do cadastro no no Registro Brasileiro de Doadores Voluntários de Medula Óssea (REDOME). Resultados: A abordagem adotada mostrou-se eficaz, gerando grande interesse do público. Constatamos que grande parcela da população possui informações incorretas sobre o tema, porém demonstram empatia e desejo de se cadastrarem como doadores de medula óssea. A presença de doadores já cadastrados também foi significativa, reforçando a relevância de campanhas contínuas de conscientização. Discussão: Para atrair a população, utilizamos as peças anatômicas, a maior dificuldade encontrada na realização das campanhas é expor o assunto de forma simples, particularmente para o público infanto-juvenil. A maioria dos adultos apresentaram informações incorretas e/ou desatualizadas. Nos casos descritos acima, esclarecemos as dúvidas e fornecemos materiais. Quanto à atualização de cadastros no REDOME, diversos doadores comentaram que o processo é rápido, fácil e que não lembram de realizar o processo em casa. Conclusão: As campanhas em eventos sociais são uma estratégia eficaz para alcançar um público diversificado, incluindo pessoas com diferentes idades, níveis de escolaridade, etnias e classes sociais, promovendo uma maior captação de doadores voluntários de medula óssea, no entanto, reforça-se a necessidade de traçar estratégias atrativas, adequadas para cada grupo etário a fim de atingir o objetivo do projeto.

Abstract: Resumo Fundamento: A fibrilação atrial (FA) é a arritmia cardíaca sustentada mais frequente, mas ainda é subdiagnosticada especialmente em pacientes assintomáticos. Objetivo: Avaliar uma estratégia simples para otimizar a identificação da FA. Métodos: Avaliados indivíduos assintomáticos com 65 anos ou mais, portadores de hipertensão arterial (HA) ou insuficiência cardíaca (IC). Os dados foram inseridos e armazenados em plataforma REDCap. Inicialmente foram realizadas análise de risco de FA com o algoritmo matemático Stroke Risk Analysis (SRA) aplicado em eletrocardiograma (ECG) de 1 hora. Todos os pacientes de alto risco de FA foram orientados a realizar o protocolo de ECG domiciliar por sete dias com o equipamento portátil Kardia 6L OMRON, AliveCor®. Abstract: ABSTRACT Purpose: To evaluate exogenous hyaluronic acid (HA) derived from bacterial fermentation through enteral and parenteral routes in ischemic skin flaps induced in rats, using clinical and histological exams; and interleukins (IL) as tissue inflammatory biomarkers. Methods: Sixty-four male adults Wistar rats with ischemic skin flaps on the dorsum were randomized into four groups, based on the treatment protocol: subcutaneous administration of saline solution (0.9%) (GI); oral administration of distilled water (GII); subcutaneous administration of HA (0.3%) (GIII); and oral administration of HA (1%) (GIV). Flaps of all groups were comparable regarding clinical and macroscopic evaluation, histological examination, pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α) and anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. Results: A lower percentage of necrosis was identified in flaps treated with subcutaneous administration of HA (0.3%). The pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines, epidermis thickness, blood vessels, and inflammatory cells showed statistically significant inter-group and intra-group differences (p < 0.05). Conclusions: High molecular HA (1,400 ~ 2,000 kDa) administrated by subcutaneous or oral route exhibited beneficial effects in ischemic skin flaps of rats. However, subcutaneous administration of HA (0.3%) showed better results in terms of the percentage of necrosis and epithelialization.

Abstract: Climate change impacts food systems, causing nutritional deficiencies and increasing cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Regulatory frameworks like the European Farm-to-Fork Strategy aim to mitigate these effects, but current EU food safety regulations inadequately address health risks from poor diet quality and contaminants.Climate change adversely affects food quality, such as nutrient depletion in crops due to higher CO2 levels, leading to diets that promote chronic diseases, including CVD. Women, because of their roles in food production and their unique physiological responses to nutrients, face distinct vulnerabilities. This review explores the interplay between climate change, diet, and cardiovascular health in women. The review highlights that sustainable diets, particularly the Mediterranean diet, offer health benefits and lower environmental impacts but are threatened by climate change-induced disruptions. Women's adherence to the Mediterranean diet is linked to significant reductions in CVD risk, though sex-specific responses need further research.Resilient agricultural practices, efficient water management, and climate-smart farming are essential to mitigate climate change's negative impacts on food security. Socio-cultural factors influencing women's dietary habits, such as traditional roles and societal pressures, further complicate the picture.Effective interventions must be tailored to women, emphasizing education, community support, policy changes, and media campaigns promoting healthy eating. Collaborative approaches involving policymakers, health professionals, and the agricultural sector are crucial for developing solutions that protect public health and promote sustainability.Addressing the multifaceted challenges posed by climate change to food quality and cardiovascular health in women underscores the need for integrated strategies that ensure food security, enhance diet quality, and mitigate environmental impacts.

Abstract: Liquid xenon time projection chambers are promising detectors to search for neutrinoless double beta decay (0$\nu \beta \beta$), due to their response uniformity, monolithic sensitive volume, scalability to large target masses, and suitability for extremely low background operations. The nEXO collaboration has designed a tonne-scale time projection chamber that aims to search for 0$\nu \beta \beta$ of \ce{^{136}Xe} with projected half-life sensitivity of $1.35\times 10^{28}$~yr. To reach this sensitivity, the design goal for nEXO is $\leq$1\% energy resolution at the decay $Q$-value ($2458.07\pm 0.31$~keV). Reaching this resolution requires the efficient collection of both the ionization and scintillation produced in the detector. The nEXO design employs Silicon Photo-Multipliers (SiPMs) to detect the vacuum ultra-violet, 175 nm scintillation light of liquid xenon. This paper reports on the characterization of the newest vacuum ultra-violet sensitive Fondazione Bruno Kessler VUVHD3 SiPMs specifically designed for nEXO, as well as new measurements on new test samples of previously characterised Hamamatsu VUV4 Multi Pixel Photon Counters (MPPCs). Various SiPM and MPPC parameters, such as dark noise, gain, direct crosstalk, correlated avalanches and photon detection efficiency were measured as a function of the applied over voltage and wavelength at liquid xenon temperature (163~K). The results from this study are used to provide updated estimates of the achievable energy resolution at the decay $Q$-value for the nEXO design.

Abstract: Dark matter lighter than 10 GeV/c$^2$ encompasses a promising range of candidates. A conceptual design for a new detector, DarkSide-LowMass, is presented, based on the DarkSide-50 detector and progress toward DarkSide-20k, optimized for a low-threshold electron-counting measurement. Sensitivity to light dark matter is explored for various potential energy thresholds and background rates. These studies show that DarkSide-LowMass can achieve sensitivity to light dark matter down to the solar neutrino floor for GeV-scale masses and significant sensitivity down to 10 MeV/c$^2$ considering the Migdal effect or interactions with electrons. Requirements for optimizing the detector's sensitivity are explored, as are potential sensitivity gains from modeling and mitigating spurious electron backgrounds that may dominate the signal at the lowest energies.

48. The Freehand Technique: The Ability of the Human Eye to Identify Implant Sites on the Patient

Abstract: In implantology, among the key choices, to obtain predictable results, it is essential to establish, using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), the bone site and where to insert the implants; during the surgical phase, these sites must be identified on the oral mucosa. Surgical templates are a valid aid, especially in complex cases which require the insertion of more than three or four implants. In cases of a single implant, on the other hand, surgical guides are rarely used, and the implant is often inserted freehand; therefore, the identification of the implant site on the oral mucosa (after choosing the location on the CBCT) is more difficult. For this reason, the clinician uses the teeth in the arch as a reference. This study evaluates the ability of the human eye to identify, on the oral mucosa, where the implant collars will be positioned, the position of which has previously been chosen on the CBCT, in cases where the hands-free surgical technique (without surgical guides) is used. The verification of this precision is carried out using particular thermo-printed templates which contain radiopaque metal spheres. The results show that, in the freehand technique, it is difficult to precisely identify the implant sites (chosen via X-ray) on the mucosa, especially when they are far from natural teeth adjacent to the edentulous area. In case of monoedentulism, the freehand implant technique seems to be applicable by expert implantologists with a reduced risk of error; in fact, clinical experience helps to find the correct correspondence between the implant site chosen on the CBCT and its identification on the mucosa. The level of experience is fundamental in the clinician’s decision about whether or not to use surgical guides; in fact, doctors with little experience should use surgical guides even in the simplest cases to reduce the risk of error.

Abstract: Abstract Hematopoietic stem cell gene therapy (GT) using a γ-retroviral vector (γ-RV) is an effective treatment for Severe Combined Immunodeficiency due to Adenosine Deaminase deficiency. Here, we describe a case of GT-related T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) that developed 4.7 years after treatment. The patient underwent chemotherapy and haploidentical transplantation and is currently in remission. Blast cells contain a single vector insertion activating the LIM-only protein 2 (LMO2) proto-oncogene, confirmed by physical interaction, and low Adenosine Deaminase (ADA) activity resulting from methylation of viral promoter. The insertion is detected years before T-ALL in multiple lineages, suggesting that further hits occurred in a thymic progenitor. Blast cells contain known and novel somatic mutations as well as germline mutations which may have contributed to transformation. Before T-ALL onset, the insertion profile is similar to those of other ADA-deficient patients. The limited incidence of vector-related adverse events in ADA-deficiency compared to other γ-RV GT trials could be explained by differences in transgenes, background disease and patient’s specific factors.

Abstract: Abstract Background The occurrence of higher winter temperatures in Brazilian areas with tropical and highland climates may result in a fifth peak of tick populations during winter in addition to the four generations previously described. Therefore, a strategic control protocol was developed with treatments in two seasons with the objective of controlling the generations of ticks that occur in spring/summer and those that occur in autumn/winter. Methods The study was conducted in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, from the beginning of the rainy season, November 2020, to October 2021. In a randomized block design, 36 calves were distributed into three groups: (i) negative control; (ii) traditional strategic control in one season (SC1S), at the beginning of the rainy season; and (iii) strategic control in two seasons (SC2S), at the beginning and end of the rainy season. The SC1S strategic control group was treated on day 0, November 2020, and twice more with intervals of 42 days. The SC2S group received three more treatments beginning on day 182, May 2021, with intervals of 42 days. All treatments consisted of 5% fluralaner (Exzolt® 5%) delivered via a pour-on dose of 1 mL/20 kg body weight. Counts of semi-engorged female ticks were performed on day 3 and every 14 days thereafter, and the animals were weighed at the same time. Results Fluralaner showed a mean efficacy of more than 95% up to day 294. The two treated groups showed a decrease (P 0.05) from those of the control group from day 231 onward.
