Search

Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are powerful sources of panchromatic radiation. All AGN emit in X-rays, contributing around $\sim 5-10\%$ of the AGN bolometric luminosity. The X-ray emitting region, popularly known as the corona, is geometrically and radiatively compact with a size typically $\lesssim 10 \, R_{\rm G}$ (gravitational radii). The rapid and extreme variability in X-rays also suggest that the corona must be a dynamic structure. Decades of X-ray studies have shed much light on the topic, but the nature and origin of AGN corona are still not clearly understood. This is mostly due to the complexities involved in several physical processes at play in the high-gravity, high-density and high-temperature region in the vicinity of the supermassive black hole (SMBH). It is still not clear how exactly the corona is energetically and physically sustained near a SMBH. The ubiquity of coronal emission in AGN points to their fundamental role in black hole accretion processes. Black hole accretion in active galactic nuclei (AGN) is coupled to the evolution of their host galaxies. Outflowing winds in AGN can play an important role in this evolution through the resulting feedback mechanism. Multi-wavelength spectroscopy is key for probing the intertwined physics of inflows and outflows in AGN. However, with the current spectrometers, crucial properties of the ionized outflows are poorly understood, such as their coupling to the accretion rate, their launching mechanism, and their kinetic power. In this paper we discuss the need for simultaneous X-ray and UV high-resolution spectroscopy for tackling outstanding questions on these outflows in AGN. The instrumental requirements for achieving the scientific objectives are addressed. We demonstrate that these requirements would be facilitated by the proposed Arcus Probe mission concept. The multi-wavelength spectroscopy and timing by Arcus would enable us to establish the kinematics and ionization structure of the entire ionized outflow, extending from the vicinity of the accretion disk to the outskirts of the host galaxy. Arcus would provide key diagnostics on the origin, driving mechanism, and the energetics of the outflows, which are useful benchmarks for testing various theoretical models of outflows and understanding their impact in AGN., Comment: Accepted for publication in Journal of Astronomical Telescopes, Instruments, and Systems (JATIS), 13 pages, 5 figures

'Bare' active galactic nuclei (AGN) are a subclass of Type 1 AGN that show little or no intrinsic absorption. They offer an unobscured view of the central regions of the AGN and therefore serve as ideal targets to study the relativistic reflection features originating from the innermost regions of the accretion disc. We present a detailed broadband spectral analysis ($0.3 - 70$ keV) of one of the most luminous bare AGN in the local universe, RBS 1124 ($z= 0.208$) using a new, co-ordinated high signal-to-noise observation obtained by $\textit{XMM-Newton}$ and $\textit{NuSTAR}$. The source exhibits a power-law continuum with $\Gamma \sim$ 1.8 along with a soft excess below 2 keV, a weak neutral iron line and curvature at high energies ($\sim 30$ keV). The broadband spectrum, including the soft excess and the high-energy continuum, is well fit by the relativistic reflection model when the accretion disc is allowed to have densities of log$(n_{\rm e}$/cm$^{-3}$) $\gtrsim 19.2$. Our analysis therefore suggests that when high-density effects are considered, relativistic reflection remains a viable explanation for the soft excess., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We extend our recent work on black hole spin in X-ray binary systems to include an analysis of 189 archival NuSTAR observations from 24 sources. Using self-consistent data reduction pipelines, spectral models, and statistical techniques, we report an unprecedented and uniform sample of 36 stellar-mass black hole spin measurements based on relativistic reflection. This treatment suggests that prior reports of low spins in a small number of sources were generally erroneous: our comprehensive treatment finds that those sources tend to harbor black holes with high spin values. Overall, within $1\sigma$ uncertainty, $\sim86\%$ of the sample are consistent with $a \geq 0.95$, $\sim94\%$ of the sample are consistent with $a\geq 0.9$, and $100\%$ is consistent with $a\geq 0.7$ (the theoretical maximum for neutron stars; $a = cJ/GM^{2}$). We also find that the high-mass X-ray binaries (those with A-, B-, or O-type companions) are consistent with $a\geq 0.9$ within the $1\sigma$ errors; this is in agreement with the low-mass X-ray binary population and may be especially important for comparisons to black holes discovered in gravitational wave events. In some cases, different spectra from the same source yield similar spin measurements but conflicting values for the inclination of the inner disk; we suggest that this is due to variable disk winds obscuring the blue wing of the relativistic Fe K emission line. We present the first results of a high-cadence Swift monitoring campaign ($3-4$ visits per day for $75$ days) of the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy NGC 6814 characterizing its variability throughout the X-ray and UV/optical wavebands. Structure function analysis reveals an X-ray power law ($\alpha=0.5^{+0.2}_{-0.1}$) that is significantly flatter than the one measured in the UV/optical bands ($\langle\alpha\rangle\approx1.5$), suggesting different physical mechanisms driving the observed variability in each emission region. The structure function break-time is consistent across the UV/optical bands ($\langle\tau\rangle\approx2.3~\mathrm{d}$), suggesting a very compact emission region in the disc. Correlated short time-scale variability measured through cross-correlation analysis finds a lag-wavelength spectrum that is inconsistent with a standard disc reprocessing scenario ($\tau\propto\lambda^{4/3}$) due to significant flattening in the optical wavebands. Flux-flux analysis finds an extremely blue AGN spectral component ($F_{\nu}\propto\lambda^{-0.85}$) that does not follow a standard accretion disc profile ($F_{\nu}\propto\lambda^{-1/3}$). While extreme outer disc truncation ($R_{\mathrm{out}}=202\pm5~r_g$) at a standard accretion rate ($\dot{m}_{\mathrm{Edd}}=0.0255\pm0.0006$) may explain the shape of the AGN spectral component, the lag-wavelength spectrum requires more modest truncation ($R_{\mathrm{out}}=1,382^{+398}_{-404}~r_g$) at an extreme accretion rate ($\dot{m}_{\mathrm{Edd}}=1.3^{+2.1}_{-0.9}$). No combination of parameters can simultaneously explain both results in a self-consistent way. 1ES1927+654 is a nearby active galactic nucleus that has shown an enigmatic outburst in optical/UV followed by X-rays, exhibiting strange variability patterns at timescales of months-years. Here we report the unusual X-ray, UV, and radio variability of the source in its post-flare state (Jan 2022- May 2023). Firstly, we detect an increase in the soft X-ray (0.3-2 keV) flux from May 2022- May 2023 by almost a factor of five, which we call the bright-soft-state. The hard X-ray 2-10 keV flux increased by a factor of two, while the UV flux density did not show any significant changes ($\le 30\%$) in the same period. The integrated energy pumped into the soft and hard X-ray during this period of eleven months is $\sim 3.57\times 10^{50}$ erg and $5.9\times 10^{49}$ erg, respectively. From the energetics, it is evident that whatever is producing the soft excess (SE) is pumping out more energy than either the UV or hard X-ray source. Since the energy source presumably is ultimately the accretion of matter onto the SMBH, the SE emitting region must be receiving the majority of this energy. In addition, the source does not follow the typical disc-corona relation found in AGNs, neither in the initial flare (in 2017-2019) nor in the current bright soft state (2022-2023). We found that the core (<1 pc) radio emission at 5 GHz gradually increased till March 2022 but showed a dip in August 2022. The G\"udel Benz relation ($L_{\rm radio}/L_{\rm X-ray}\sim 10^{-5}$), however, is still within the expected range for radio-quiet AGN and further follow-up radio observations are currently being undertaken., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Accretion of black holes at near-Eddington or super-Eddington rates is the most powerful episode that drives black hole growth, and it may work in several types of objects. However, the physics of accretion and jet-disc coupling in such a state remains unclear, mainly because the associated jets are not easily detectable due to the extremely weak emission or possibly episodic nature of the jets. Only a few near/super-Eddington systems have demonstrated radio activity, and it remains unclear whether there is a jet and what are their properties, in super-Eddington active galactic nuclei (AGNs) (and ultraluminous X-ray sources). The deficit is mainly due to the complex radio mixing between the origins of jets and others, such as star formation activity, photo-ionized gas, accretion disk wind, and coronal activity. In this work, we conducted high-resolution very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations to explore the jets in the highly accreting narrow-line Seyfert I system IZw1. Our observations successfully revealed small-scale jets (with a linear size of $\sim45$ parsec) at both 1.5 and 5 GHz, based on the high radio brightness temperature, radio morphology, and spectral index distribution. Interestingly, the lack of a flat-spectrum radio core and knotty jet structures imply episodic ejections in IZw1, which resemble the ejection process in Galactic X-ray binaries that are in the canonical very high state. We report a detailed analysis of the XMM-Newton spectra of six Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies at redshift z = 0.35--0.92. Compared with the NLS1s at lower redshift in the previously most-studied sample, these NLS1s have larger black hole (BH) masses ($\log\,M_\text{BH}>7.5$) with similar or even lower Eddington ratios. Our extended XMM-Newton sample of NLS1s shows strong soft X-ray excess emission below 2 keV. The quantified soft excess strength does not show an obvious discrepancy from previous studies of the lower-redshift NLS1s. The systematic effect in the measurement of the Eddington ratio mainly lies in the bolometric correction factor. We also tentatively fit the spectra assuming two more physical models for the soft excess: warm Comptonization and relativistic reflection from the inner accretion disk. In the first scenario, we confirm the ubiquity of a warm and optically thick corona. The behavior of a single source can be better explained by relativistic reflection, although we cannot distinguish which model is a more favorable explanation for the soft excess based on the best-fit statistics., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

The imminent launch of XRISM will usher in an era of high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy. For active galactic nuclei (AGN) this is an exciting epoch that is full of massive potential for uncovering the ins and outs of supermassive black hole accretion. In this work, we review AGN research topics that are certain to advance in the coming years with XRISM and prognosticate the possibilities with Athena and Arcus. Specifically, our discussion focuses on: (i) the relatively slow moving ionised winds known as warm absorbers and obscurers; (ii) the iron emitting from different regions of the inner and outer disc, broad line region, and torus; and (iii) the ultrafast outflows that may be the key to understanding AGN feedback., Comment: Invited review chapter for the book High-Resolution X-Ray Spectroscopy: Instrumentation, Data Analysis, and Science (Eds. Mrk 1239 is a highly polarized NLS1 in the optical band, whose $0.3-3$ keV spectrum has remained remarkably consistent over more than two decades of observation. Previous analysis of this object suggested that the soft X-ray band was dominated by emission lines (collisionally and/or photoionized) from the distant host galaxy as the X-ray emission from the central engine was highly obscured. New XMM-Newton data of Mrk 1239 are presented here to investigate the soft X-ray band of this galaxy with high resolution. The first RGS spectra of this source reveal a plethora of ionized emission lines originating from two distinct plasmas, one collisionally ionized and the other photoionized at approximately equal brightness. The best fit model uses {\sc apec} and {\sc xstar} grids to account for the collisionally ionized and photoionized components, respectively. The fit improves significantly if the photoionized material is allowed to outflow at $\approx 500$ km s$^{-1}$, matching the outflow velocity of the forbidden O{\sc vii} emission line. From constraints on the ionization and density of the photoionized material we can estimate the location of it to be no further than a few pc from the central source, around the outer radius of the torus, which is consistent with the O{\sc vii}$(f)$ emission line. Properties of the collisionally ionized plasma are consistent with star formation rate (SFR) of $\approx 3 M_{\odot} \textrm{yr}^{-1}$, which is comparable with several previous measurements of the SFR in this galaxy., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 13 pages

The launch of NuSTAR and the increasing number of binary black hole (BBH) mergers detected through gravitational wave (GW) observations have exponentially advanced our understanding of black holes. Despite the simplicity owed to being fully described by their mass and angular momentum, black holes have remained mysterious laboratories that probe the most extreme environments in the Universe. While significant progress has been made in the recent decade, the distribution of spin in black holes has not yet been understood. In this work, we provide a systematic analysis of all known black holes in X-ray binary systems (XB) that have previously been observed by NuSTAR, but have not yet had a spin measurement using the "relativistic reflection" method obtained from that data. By looking at all the available archival NuSTAR data of these sources, we measure ten new black hole spins: IGR J17454-2919 -- $a=0.97^{+0.03}_{-0.17}$; GRS 1758-258 -- $a=0.991^{+0.007}_{-0.019}$; MAXI J1727-203 -- $a=0.986^{+0.012}_{-0.159}$; MAXI J0637-430 -- $a=0.97\pm0.02$; Swift J1753.5-0127 -- $a=0.997^{+0.001}_{-0.003}$; V4641 Sgr -- $a=0.86^{+0.04}_{-0.06}$; 4U 1543-47 -- $a=0.98^{+0.01}_{-0.02}$; 4U 1957+11 -- $a=0.95^{+0.02}_{-0.04}$; H 1743-322 -- $a=0.98^{+0.01}_{-0.02}$; MAXI J1820+070 -- $a=0.988^{+0.006}_{-0.028}$ (all uncertainties are at the $1\sigma$ confidence level). We discuss the implications of our measurements on the entire distribution of stellar mass black hole spins in XB, and we compare that with the spin distribution in BBH, finding that the two distributions are clearly in disagreement. We present a spectral analysis of two XMM-Newton observations of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy UGC 11763. UGC 11763 shows very different soft X-ray spectral shapes in the two observations separated by 12 years. Three spectral models are considered to explain the multi-epoch X-ray variability of UGC 11763, one based on the relativistic disc reflection model, one based on multiple partially-covering absorbers combined with the warm corona model, and a hybrid model. In the first model, the X-ray variability of UGC 11763 is caused by the emission from a compact coronal region with a variable size. The resulting disc reflection component changes accordingly. A warm absorption model with a modest column density is required in this model too. In the partially-covering absorption scenario, the X-ray variability of UGC 11763 is caused by the variable covering factors of two absorbers located within a region of $r<\approx100r_{\rm g}$. Moreover, the temperature and strength of the warm corona have to change significantly too to explain the variable underlying soft X-ray emission. Lastly, we investigate the possibility of variable intrinsic power-law emission from the hot corona combined with variable absorption in UGC 11763 without changing the geometry of the corona in the third model. This hybrid model provides a slightly better fit than the partially-covering absorption model with improvements in fitting the iron emission band. Current CCD-resolution data cannot distinguish these spectral models for UGC 11763. We present a detailed analysis of the XMM-Newton observations of five narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s). They all show very soft continuum emission in the X-ray band with a photon index of $\Gamma\gtrsim 2.5$. Therefore, they are referred to as `ultra-soft' NLS1s in this paper. By modeling their optical/UV-X-ray spectral energy distribution (SED) with a reflection-based model, we find indications that the disc surface in these ultra-soft NLS1s is in a higher ionisation state than other typical Seyfert 1 AGN. Our best-fit SED models suggest that these five ultra-soft NLS1s have an Eddington ratio of $\lambda_{\rm Edd}=1-20$ assuming available black hole mass measurements. In addition, our models infer that a significant fraction of the disc energy in these ultra-soft NLS1s is radiated away in the form of non-thermal emission instead of the thermal emission from the disc. Due to their extreme properties, X-ray observations of these sources in the iron band are particularly challenging. Future observations, e.g. from Athena, will enable us to have a clearer view of the spectral shape in the iron band and thus distinguish the reflection model from other interpretations of their broadband spectra., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures; published in MNRAS, Volume 498, Issue 3, November 2020. We present an analysis of the NuSTAR and Swift spectra of the black hole candidate MAXI J1813-095 in a failed-transition outburst in 2018. The NuSTAR observations show evidence of reflected emission from the inner region of the accretion disc. By modelling the reflection component in the spectra, we find a disc inner radius of $R_{\rm in}<7$ $r_{\rm g}$. This result suggests that either a slightly truncated disc or a non-truncated disc forms at a few percent of the Eddington limit in MAXI J1813-095. Our best-fit reflection models indicate that the geometry of the innermost accretion remains consistent during the period of NuSTAR observations. The spectral variability of MAXI J1813-095 from multi-epoch observations is dominated by the variable photon index of the Comptonisation emission., Comment: 9 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Previously, we modelled the X-ray spectra of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS 13224$-$3809 using a disc reflection model with a fixed electron density of $10^{15}$ cm$^{-3}$. An additional blackbody component was required to fit the soft X-ray excess below 2 keV. In this work, we analyse simultaneously five flux-resolved XMM-Newton spectra of this source comprising data collected over 2 Ms. A disc reflection model with an electron density of $n_{\rm e}\approx10^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$ and an iron abundance of $Z_{\rm Fe}=3.2\pm0.5Z_{\odot}$ is used to fit the broad-band spectra of this source. No additional component is required to fit the soft excess. Our best-fit model provides consistent measurements of black hole spin and disc inclination angle as in previous models where a low disc density was assumed. In the end, we calculate the average illumination distance between the corona and the reflection region in the disc of IRAS 13224$-$3809 based on best-fit density and ionisation parameters, which changes from 0.43$\sqrt{f_{\rm AD}/f_{\rm INF}}$ $r_{\rm g}$ in the lowest flux state to 1.71$\sqrt{f_{\rm AD}/f_{\rm INF}}$ $r_{\rm g}$ in the highest flux state assuming a black hole mass of $2\times10^{6}M_{\odot}$. $f_{\rm AD}/f_{\rm INF}$ is the ratio between the flux of the coronal emission that reaches the accretion disc and infinity. This ratio depends on the geometry of the coronal region in IRAS 13224$-$3809. So we only discuss its value based on the simple `lamp-post' model, although detailed modelling of the disc emissivity profile of IRAS 13224$-$3809 is required in future to reveal the exact geometry of the corona., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures including appendices; accepted for publication in MNRAS

The nearby type-II AGN 1ES1927+654 went through a violent changing-look (CL) event beginning December 2017 during which the optical and UV fluxes increased by four magnitudes over a few months, and broad emission lines newly appeared in the optical/UV. By July 2018 the X-ray coronal emission had completely vanished, only to reappear a few months later. In this work we report the evolution of the radio, optical, UV and X-rays from the pre-flare state through mid-2021 with new and archival data from the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), the European VLBI Network, the Very Large Array (VLA), the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG), Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC), The Neil Gehrels Swift observatory and XMM-Newton. The main results from our work are: (1) The source has returned to its pre-CL state in optical, UV, and X-ray; the disk-corona relation has been re-established as has been in the pre-CL state, with an $\alpha_{\rm OX}\sim 1.02$. The optical spectra are dominated by narrow emission lines. (2) The UV light curve follows a shallower slope of $\propto t^{-0.91\pm 0.04}$ compared to that predicted by a tidal disruption event. We conjecture that a magnetic flux inversion event is the possible cause for this enigmatic event. (3) The compact radio emission which we tracked in the pre-CL (2014), during CL (2018) and post-CL(2021) at spatial scales $<1$ pc was at its lowest level during the changing look event in 2018, nearly contemporaneous with a low $2-10$ keV emission. The radio to X-ray ratio of the compact source $L_{\rm Radio}/L_{\rm X-ray}\sim 10^{-5.5}$, follows the Gudel-Benz relation, typically found in coronally active stars, and several AGN. A sample of 22 narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) and 47 broad-line Seyfert 1 (BLS1) galaxies observed with Suzaku is used to examine the Fe K band properties of each group. Three different models are used to examine the presence of: narrow neutral Fe Ka line at 6.4 keV and ionised Fe xxv and Fe xxvi emission lines (model A); a broad emission feature at around 6 - 7 keV (model B); and an absorption edge at 7.1 keV (model C). In all three models, the neutral Fe Ka line is weaker (lower luminosity and equivalent width) in NLS1s than in BLS1s. Model (B) also finds a more significant broad component (larger equivalent width) in NLS1s than in BLS1s. The feature does not appear to be an artefact of steeper spectra in NLS1s, but rather an intrinsic property of these sources. From model (C), the optical depth of the absorption edge appears comparable between the two samples. When comparing the absorption with the emission line properties, NLS1s seem to exhibit a lower ratio of emission-to-absorption of iron than BLS1s, and than expected based on the fluorescence yield. The observed differences may arise from different torus geometries (e.g. larger opening angle in NLS1s), and/or additional sources of Fe K emission and absorption in NLS1s beyond pure fluorescence (e.g. originating in the disc and broad line region)., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. We present new observations of the odd $z=0.96$ weak-line quasar PG1407+265, and report the discovery of CXOU J140927.9+261813, a $z=0.68$ X-ray cluster. Archival X-ray photometry spanning nearly four decades reveals that PG1407+265 is variable at the 1 dex level on a timescale of years. V-band variability is present with an amplitude less than 0.1 mag. The emission-line properties of PG1407+265 also reveal clear evidence for a powerful inflow or outflow due to near- or super-Eddington accretion, having a mechanical luminosity of order $10^{48}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Our follow-up {\sl Chandra} exposure centered on this object reveal a foreground $z=0.68$ cluster roughly 1' x 1'.5 in extent, offset to the east of PG1407+265, roughly coincident with the $z=0.68$ radio galaxy FIRST J140927.8+261818. This non-cool-core cluster contributes about 10\% of the X-ray flux of PG1407+265, has a mass of $(0.6- 5.5)\times10^{14} M_\odot$, and an X-ray gas temperature of ($2.2-4.3$) keV. Because the projected position of the quasar lies at about twice that of the cluster's inferred Einstein radius, lensing by the cluster is unlikely to explain the quasar's unusual properties. The optical and UV variability of the majority of AGN may be related to the reprocessing of rapidly-changing X-ray emission from a more compact region near the central black hole. Such a reprocessing model would be characterised by lags between X-ray and optical/UV emission due to differences in light travel time. Observationally however, such lag features have been difficult to detect due to gaps in the lightcurves introduced through factors such as source visibility or limited telescope time. In this work, Gaussian process regression is employed to interpolate the gaps in the Swift X-ray and UV lightcurves of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 335. In a simulation study of five commonly-employed analytic Gaussian process kernels, we conclude that the Matern 1/2 and rational quadratic kernels yield the most well-specified models for the X-ray and UVW2 bands of Mrk 335. In analysing the structure functions of the Gaussian process lightcurves, we obtain a broken power law with a break point at 125 days in the UVW2 band. In the X-ray band, the structure function of the Gaussian process lightcurve is consistent with a power law in the case of the rational quadratic kernel whilst a broken power law with a breakpoint at 66 days is obtained from the Matern 1/2 kernel. We report the detection of a rapid occultation event in the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 6814, simultaneously captured in a transient light curve and spectral variability. The intensity and hardness ratio curves capture distinct ingress and egress periods that are symmetric in duration. Independent of the selected continuum model, the changes can be simply described by varying the fraction of the central engine that is covered by transiting obscuring gas. Together, the spectral and timing analyses self-consistently reveal the properties of the obscuring gas, its location to be in the broad line region (BLR), and the size of the X-ray source to be ~25 rg . Our results demonstrate that obscuration close to massive black holes can shape their appearance, and can be harnessed to measure the active region that surrounds the event horizon., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures. We describe a new implementation of a broad-band soft X-ray polarimeter, substantially based on a previous design. This implementation, the Pioneer Soft X-ray Polarimeter (PiSoX) is a SmallSat, designed for NASA's call for Astrophysics Pioneers, small missions that could be CubeSats, balloon experiments, or SmallSats. As in the REDSoX Polarimeter, the grating arrangement is designed optimally for the purpose of polarimetry with broad-band focussing optics by matching the dispersion of the spectrometer channels to laterally graded multilayers (LGMLs). The system can achieve polarization modulation factors over 90%. For PiSoX, the optics are lightweight Si mirrors in a one-bounce parabolic configuration. High efficiency, blazed gratings from opposite sectors are oriented to disperse to a LGML forming a channel covering the wavelength range from 35 to 75 Angstroms (165 - 350 eV). Upon satellite rotation, the intensities of the dispersed spectra, after reflection and polarizing by the LGMLs, give the three Stokes parameters needed to determine a source's linear polarization fraction and orientation. The design can be extended to higher energies as LGMLs are developed further. KUG 1141+371 is a Seyfert 1 galaxy that shows a simultaneous flux increase in the optical and UV bands in the past decade. For instance, the latest Swift observation in 2019 shows that the UVW2 flux of the AGN in KUG 1141+371 has increased by over one order of magnitude since 2009. Meanwhile, the soft X-ray flux of KUG 1141+371 also shows a steady increase by one order of magnitude since 2007. The significant multi-wavelength luminosity change is likely due to a boost of mass accretion rate from approximately 0.6% of the Eddington limit to 3.2%, assuming a black hole mass of $10^{8}M_{\odot}$. In this work, we conduct detailed multi-epoch X-ray spectral analysis focusing on the variability of the X-ray continuum emission and the puzzling soft excess emission. In addition, our SED models also suggest a simultaneous increase of disc temperature and a decreasing inner disc radius along with the increasing accretion rate. A sample of narrow-line (NLS1) and broad-line Seyfert 1 (BLS1) galaxies observed with Suzaku is presented. The final sample consists of 22 NLS1s and 47 BLS1s, for a total of 69 AGN that are all at low redshift (z<0.5) and exhibit low host galaxy column densities (<10^22 cm^-2). The average spectrum for each object is fit with a toy model to characterise important parameters, including the photon index, soft excess, Compton hump (or hard excess), narrow iron line strength, luminosity and X-ray Eddington ratio (L_x/L_Edd). We confirm previous findings that NLS1s have steeper power laws and higher X-ray Eddington ratios, but also find that NLS1 galaxies have stronger soft and hard excesses than their BLS1 counterparts. Studying the correlations between parameters shows that the soft and hard excesses are correlated for NLS1 galaxies, while no such correlation is observed for BLS1s. Performing a principal component analysis (PCA) on the measured X-ray parameters shows that while the X-ray Eddington ratio is the main source of variations within our sample (PC1), variations in the soft and hard excesses form the second principal component (PC2) and it is dominated by the NLS1s. The correlation between the soft and hard excess in NLS1 galaxies may suggest a common origin for the two components, such as a blurred reflection model. The presented Suzaku sample of Seyfert 1 galaxies is a useful tool for analysis of the X-ray properties of AGN, and for the study of the soft and hard excesses observed in AGN., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Main Journal

X-ray observations of the unique NLS1 galaxy Mrk 1239 spanning 18-years are presented. Data from XMM-Newton, Suzaku, Swift and NuSTAR are combined to obtain a broad-band, multi-epoch view of the source. There is spectral variability in the 3-10 keV band over the 18-years. An analysis of the NuSTAR and Suzaku light curves also suggests rapid variability in the 3-10 keV band, which is consistent with the NLS1 definition of the source. However, no variability is seen below 3 keV on any timescale. Two distinct physical models are adopted to describe the data above and below ~3 keV. The low energies are dominated by a hot, diffuse gas likely associated with a starburst component at large physical scales. The higher energy spectrum is dominated by emission from the central region. Ionised partial covering and relativistic blurred reflection are considered for the central region emission. In both cases, the underlying power law has a photon index of $\Gamma\sim2.3-2.4$. A distant reflector, a neutral partial covering component with a covering fraction near $\sim1$, and contributions from starburst emission are always required. The blurred reflection model requires a reflection dominated spectrum, which may be at odds with the low emissivity index and radio properties of the source. By contrast, the two absorption components required in the ionised partial covering model may correspond to the two distinct regions of polarization observed in the optical. Regardless of the physical model, spectral changes between epochs are driven by the absorption components and on short time scales by intrinsic AGN variability., Comment: Accepted for publications in ApJ. 17 pages

X-ray reverberation echoes are assumed to be produced in the strongly distorted spacetime around accreting supermassive black holes. This signal allows us to spatially map the geometry of the inner accretion flow - a region which cannot yet be spatially resolved by any telescope - and provides a direct measure of the black hole mass and spin. The reverberation timescale is set by the light travel path between the direct emission from a hot X-ray corona and the reprocessed emission from the inner edge of the accretion disc. However, there is an inherent degeneracy in the reverberation signal between black hole mass, inner disc radius and height of the illuminating corona above the disc. Here, we use a long X-ray observation of the highly-variable active galaxy, IRAS 13224-3809, to track the reverberation signal as the system evolves on timescales of a day. With the inclusion of all the relativistic effects, modelling reveals that the height of the X-ray corona increases with increasing luminosity, providing a dynamic view of the inner accretion region. This simultaneous modelling allows us to break the inherent degeneracies and obtain an independent timing-based estimate for the mass and spin of the black hole. The uncertainty on black hole mass is comparable to the leading optical reverberation method, making X-ray reverberation a powerful technique, particularly for sources with low optical variability., Comment: Accepted Nat. We present the results from the Hitomi Soft Gamma-ray Detector (SGD) observation of the Crab nebula. The main part of SGD is a Compton camera, which in addition to being a spectrometer, is capable of measuring polarization of gamma-ray photons. The Crab nebula is one of the brightest X-ray / gamma-ray sources on the sky, and, the only source from which polarized X-ray photons have been detected. SGD observed the Crab nebula during the initial test observation phase of Hitomi. We performed the data analysis of the SGD observation, the SGD background estimation and the SGD Monte Carlo simulations, and, successfully detected polarized gamma-ray emission from the Crab nebula with only about 5 ks exposure time. The obtained polarization fraction of the phase-integrated Crab emission (sum of pulsar and nebula emissions) is (22.1 $\pm$ 10.6)% and, the polarization angle is 110.7$^o$ + 13.2 / $-$13.0$^o$ in the energy range of 60--160 keV (The errors correspond to the 1 sigma deviation). The confidence level of the polarization detection was 99.3%. The polarization angle measured by SGD is about one sigma deviation with the projected spin axis of the pulsar, 124.0$^o$ $\pm$0.1$^o$., Comment: 19 pages, 18 figures, 6 tables. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is applied to a variety of blazars to examine X-ray spectral variability. Data from nine different objects are analysed in two ways: long-term, which examines variability trends across years or decades, and short-term, which looks at variability within a single observation. The results are then compared to simulated spectra in order to identify the physical components that they correspond to. It is found that long-term variability for all objects is dominated by changes in a single power law component. The primary component is responsible for more than 84 per cent of the variability in every object, while the second component is responsible for at least 3 per cent. Small differences in the shapes of these components can be used to predict qualities such as the degree to which spectral parameters are varying relative to one another, and correlations between spectral hardness and flux. Short-term variability is less clear-cut, with no obvious physical analogue for some of the PCA results. We discuss the simulation process, and specifically remark on the consequences of the breakdown of the linearity assumption of PCA and how it manifests in the real data. The Canadian Astro-H Metrology System (CAMS) on the Hitomi X-ray satellite is a laser alignment system that measures the lateral displacement (X/Y) of the extensible optical bench (EOB) along the optical axis of the hard X-ray telescopes (HXTs). The CAMS consists of two identical units that together can be used to discern translation and rotation of the deployable element along the axis. This paper presents the results of in-flight usage of the CAMS during deployment of the EOB and during two observations (Crab and G21.5-0.9) with the HXTs. The CAMS was extremely important during the deployment operation by providing real-time positioning information of the EOB with micrometer scale resolution. In this work, we show how the CAMS improves data quality coming from the hard X-ray imagers. Moreover, we demonstrate that a metrology system is even more important as the angular resolution of the telescope increases. We present results from the Hitomi X-ray observation of a young composite-type supernova remnant (SNR) G21.5$-$0.9, whose emission is dominated by the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) contribution. The X-ray spectra in the 0.8-80 keV range obtained with the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS), Soft X-ray Imager (SXI) and Hard X-ray Imager (HXI) show a significant break in the continuum as previously found with the NuSTAR observation. After taking into account all known emissions from the SNR other than the PWN itself, we find that the Hitomi spectra can be fitted with a broken power law with photon indices of $\Gamma_1=1.74\pm0.02$ and $\Gamma_2=2.14\pm0.01$ below and above the break at $7.1\pm0.3$ keV, which is significantly lower than the NuSTAR result ($\sim9.0$ keV). The spectral break cannot be reproduced by time-dependent particle injection one-zone spectral energy distribution models, which strongly indicates that a more complex emission model is needed, as suggested by recent theoretical models. We also search for narrow emission or absorption lines with the SXS, and perform a timing analysis of PSR J1833$-$1034 with the HXI and SGD. No significant pulsation is found from the pulsar. However, unexpectedly, narrow absorption line features are detected in the SXS data at 4.2345 keV and 9.296 keV with a significance of 3.65 $\sigma$. While the origin of these features is not understood, their mere detection opens up a new field of research and was only possible with the high resolution, sensitivity and ability to measure extended sources provided by an X-ray microcalorimeter., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables. The present paper investigates the temperature structure of the X-ray emitting plasma in the core of the Perseus cluster using the 1.8--20.0 keV data obtained with the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) onboard the Hitomi Observatory. A series of four observations were carried out, with a total effective exposure time of 338 ks and covering a central region $\sim7'$ in diameter. The SXS was operated with an energy resolution of $\sim$5 eV (full width at half maximum) at 5.9 keV. Not only fine structures of K-shell lines in He-like ions but also transitions from higher principal quantum numbers are clearly resolved from Si through Fe. This enables us to perform temperature diagnostics using the line ratios of Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe, and to provide the first direct measurement of the excitation temperature and ionization temperature in the Perseus cluster. The observed spectrum is roughly reproduced by a single temperature thermal plasma model in collisional ionization equilibrium, but detailed line ratio diagnostics reveal slight deviations from this approximation. In particular, the data exhibit an apparent trend of increasing ionization temperature with increasing atomic mass, as well as small differences between the ionization and excitation temperatures for Fe, the only element for which both temperatures can be measured. The best-fit two-temperature models suggest a combination of 3 and 5 keV gas, which is consistent with the idea that the observed small deviations from a single temperature approximation are due to the effects of projection of the known radial temperature gradient in the cluster core along the line of sight. Comparison with the Chandra/ACIS and the XMM-Newton/RGS results on the other hand suggests that additional lower-temperature components are present in the ICM but not detectable by Hitomi SXS given its 1.8--20 keV energy band., Comment: 29 pages, 19 figures, 9 tables. The Hitomi SXS spectrum of the Perseus cluster, with $\sim$5 eV resolution in the 2-9 keV band, offers an unprecedented benchmark of the atomic modeling and database for hot collisional plasmas. It reveals both successes and challenges of the current atomic codes. The latest versions of AtomDB/APEC (3.0.8), SPEX (3.03.00), and CHIANTI (8.0) all provide reasonable fits to the broad-band spectrum, and are in close agreement on best-fit temperature, emission measure, and abundances of a few elements such as Ni. For the Fe abundance, the APEC and SPEX measurements differ by 16%, which is 17 times higher than the statistical uncertainty. This is mostly attributed to the differences in adopted collisional excitation and dielectronic recombination rates of the strongest emission lines. We further investigate and compare the sensitivity of the derived physical parameters to the astrophysical source modeling and instrumental effects. The Hitomi results show that an accurate atomic code is as important as the astrophysical modeling and instrumental calibration aspects. Substantial updates of atomic databases and targeted laboratory measurements are needed to get the current codes ready for the data from the next Hitomi-level mission., Comment: 46 pages, 25 figures, 11 tables. We present Hitomi observations of N132D, a young, X-ray bright, O-rich core-collapse supernova remnant in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Despite a very short observation of only 3.7 ks, the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) easily detects the line complexes of highly ionized S K and Fe K with 16-17 counts in each. The Fe feature is measured for the first time at high spectral resolution. Based on the plausible assumption that the Fe K emission is dominated by He-like ions, we find that the material responsible for this Fe emission is highly redshifted at ~800 km/s compared to the local LMC interstellar medium (ISM), with a 90% credible interval of 50-1500 km/s if a weakly informative prior is placed on possible line broadening. This indicates (1) that the Fe emission arises from the supernova ejecta, and (2) that these ejecta are highly asymmetric, since no blue-shifted component is found. The S K velocity is consistent with the local LMC ISM, and is likely from swept-up ISM material. These results are consistent with spatial mapping that shows the He-like Fe concentrated in the interior of the remnant and the S tracing the outer shell. The results also show that even with a very small number of counts, direct velocity measurements from Doppler-shifted lines detected in extended objects like supernova remnants are now possible. Thanks to the very low SXS background of ~1 event per spectral resolution element per 100 ks, such results are obtainable during short pointed or slew observations with similar instruments. This highlights the power of high-spectral-resolution imaging observations, and demonstrates the new window that has been opened with Hitomi and will be greatly widened with future missions such as the X-ray Astronomy Recovery Mission (XARM) and Athena., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, 1 table. We report on X-ray observations of the radio-intermediate, X-ray bright Seyfert 1 galaxy, III Zw 2, obtained with XMM-Newton, Suzaku, and Swift over the past 17-years. The source brightness varies significantly over yearly time scales, but more modestly over periods of days. Pointed observations with XMM-Newton in 2000 and Suzaku in 2011 show spectral differences despite comparable X-ray fluxes. The Suzaku spectra are consistent with a power law continuum and a narrow Gaussian emission feature at ~6.4 keV, whereas the earlier XMM-Newton spectrum requires a broader Gaussian profile and soft-excess below ~2 keV. A potential interpretation is that the primary power law emission, perhaps from a jet base, preferentially illuminates the inner accretion disc in 2000, but the distant torus in 2011. The interpretation could be consistent with the hypothesised precessing radio jet in III Zw 2 that may have originated from disc instabilities due to an ongoing merging event., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables

We report a Hitomi observation of IGR J16318-4848, a high-mass X-ray binary system with an extremely strong absorption of N_H~10^{24} cm^{-2}. Previous X-ray studies revealed that its spectrum is dominated by strong fluorescence lines of Fe as well as continuum emission. For physical and geometrical insight into the nature of the reprocessing material, we utilize the high spectroscopic resolving power of the X-ray microcalorimeter (the soft X-ray spectrometer; SXS) and the wide-band sensitivity by the soft and hard X-ray imager (SXI and HXI) aboard Hitomi. Even though photon counts are limited due to unintended off-axis pointing, the SXS spectrum resolves Fe K{\alpha_1} and K{\alpha_2} lines and puts strong constraints on the line centroid and width. The line width corresponds to the velocity of 160^{+300}_{-70} km s^{-1}. This represents the most accurate, and smallest, width measurement of this line made so far from any X-ray binary, much less than the Doppler broadening and shift expected from speeds which are characteristic of similar systems. Combined with the K-shell edge energy measured by the SXI and HXI spectra, the ionization state of Fe is estimated to be in the range of Fe I--IV. Considering the estimated ionization parameter and the distance between the X-ray source and the absorber, the density and thickness of the materials are estimated. The extraordinarily strong absorption and the absence of a Compton shoulder component is confirmed. These characteristics suggest reprocessing materials which are distributed in a narrow solid angle or scattering primarily with warm free electrons or neutral hydrogen., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

The origin of the narrow Fe-K{\alpha} fluorescence line at 6.4 keV from active galactic nuclei has long been under debate; some of the possible sites are the outer accretion disk, the broad line region, a molecular torus, or interstellar/intracluster media. In February-March 2016, we performed the first X-ray microcalorimeter spectroscopy with the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) onboard the Hitomi satellite of the Fanaroff-Riley type I radio galaxy NGC 1275 at the center of the Perseus cluster of galaxies. With the high energy resolution of ~5 eV at 6 keV achieved by Hitomi/SXS, we detected the Fe-K{\alpha} line with ~5.4 {\sigma} significance. The velocity width is constrained to be 500-1600 km s$^{-1}$ (FWHM for Gaussian models) at 90% confidence. The SXS also constrains the continuum level from the NGC 1275 nucleus up to ~20 keV, giving an equivalent width ~20 eV of the 6.4 keV line. Because the velocity width is narrower than that of broad H{\alpha} line of ~2750 km s$^{-1}$, we can exclude a large contribution to the line flux from the accretion disk and the broad line region. Furthermore, we performed pixel map analyses on the Hitomi/SXS data and image analyses on the Chandra archival data, and revealed that the Fe-K{\alpha} line comes from a region within ~1.6 kpc from the NGC 1275 core, where an active galactic nucleus emission dominates, rather than that from intracluster media. Therefore, we suggest that the source of the Fe-K{\alpha} line from NGC 1275 is likely a low-covering fraction molecular torus or a rotating molecular disk which probably extends from a pc to hundreds pc scale in the active galactic nucleus system., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

Extending the earlier measurements reported in Hitomi collaboration (2016, Nature, 535, 117), we examine the atmospheric gas motions within the central 100~kpc of the Perseus cluster using observations obtained with the Hitomi satellite. After correcting for the point spread function of the telescope and using optically thin emission lines, we find that the line-of-sight velocity dispersion of the hot gas is remarkably low and mostly uniform. The velocity dispersion reaches maxima of approximately 200~km~s$^{-1}$ toward the central active galactic nucleus (AGN) and toward the AGN inflated north-western `ghost' bubble. Elsewhere within the observed region, the velocity dispersion appears constant around 100~km~s$^{-1}$. We also detect a velocity gradient with a 100~km~s$^{-1}$ amplitude across the cluster core, consistent with large-scale sloshing of the core gas. If the observed gas motions are isotropic, the kinetic pressure support is less than 10\% of the thermal pressure support in the cluster core. The well-resolved optically thin emission lines have Gaussian shapes, indicating that the turbulent driving scale is likely below 100~kpc, which is consistent with the size of the AGN jet inflated bubbles. We also report the first measurement of the ion temperature in the intracluster medium, which we find to be consistent with the electron temperature. Thanks to its high spectral resolution (~5 eV at 6 keV), the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) on board Hitomi enables us to measure the detailed structure of spatially resolved emission lines from highly ionized ions in galaxy clusters for the first time. In this series of papers, using the SXS we have measured the velocities of gas motions, metallicities and the multi-temperature structure of the gas in the core of the Perseus cluster. Here, we show that when inferring physical properties from line emissivities in systems like Perseus, the resonant scattering (RS) effect should be taken into account. In the Hitomi waveband, RS mostly affects the FeXXV He$\alpha$ line ($w$) - the strongest line in the spectrum. The flux measured by Hitomi in this line is suppressed by a factor ~1.3 in the inner ~30 kpc, compared to predictions for an optically thin plasma; the suppression decreases with the distance from the center. The $w$ line also appears slightly broader than other lines from the same ion. The observed distortions of the $w$ line flux, shape and distance dependence are all consistent with the expected effect of the resonant scattering in the Perseus core. By measuring the ratio of fluxes in optically thick ($w$) and thin (FeXXV forbidden, He$\beta$, Ly$\alpha$) lines, and comparing these ratios with predictions from Monte Carlo radiative transfer simulations, the velocities of gas motions have been obtained. The results are consistent with the direct measurements of gas velocities from line broadening described elsewhere in this series, although the systematic and statistical uncertainties remain significant. Further improvements in the predictions of line emissivities in plasma models, and deeper observations with future X-ray missions will enable RS measurements to provide powerful constraints on the amplitude and anisotropy of clusters gas motions., Comment: 30 pages, 17 figure, 6 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

Ultrafast outflows (UFOs) are the most extreme winds launched by active galactic nuclei (AGN) due to their mildly-relativistic speeds (~0.1-0.3c) and are thought to significantly contribute to galactic evolution via AGN feedback. Their nature and launching mechanism are however not well understood. Recently, we have discovered the presence of a variable UFO in the narrow-line Seyfert 1 IRAS 13224-3809. The UFO varies in response to the brightness of the source. In this work we perform flux-resolved X-ray spectroscopy to study the variability of the UFO and found that the ionisation parameter is correlated with the luminosity. In the brightest states the gas is almost completely ionised by the powerful radiation field and the UFO is hardly detected. This agrees with our recent results obtained with principal component analysis. We might have found the tip of the iceberg: the high ionisation of the outflowing gas may explain why it is commonly difficult to detect UFOs in AGN and possibly suggest that we may underestimate their actual feedback. We have also found a tentative correlation between the outflow velocity and the luminosity, which is expected from theoretical predictions of radiation-pressure driven winds. This trend is rather marginal due to the Fe XXV-XXVI degeneracy. To search for giant X-ray pulses correlated with the giant radio pulses (GRPs) from the Crab pulsar, we performed a simultaneous observation of the Crab pulsar with the X-ray satellite Hitomi in the 2 -- 300 keV band and the Kashima NICT radio observatory in the 1.4 -- 1.7 GHz band with a net exposure of about 2 ks on 25 March 2016, just before the loss of the Hitomi mission.The timing performance of the Hitomi instruments was confirmed to meet the timing requirement and about 1,000 and 100 GRPs were simultaneously observed at the main and inter-pulse phases, respectively, and we found no apparent correlation between the giant radio pulses and the X-ray emission in either the main or inter-pulse phases.All variations are within the 2 sigma fluctuations of the X-ray fluxes at the pulse peaks, and the 3 sigma upper limits of variations of main- or inter- pulse GRPs are 22\% or 80\% of the peak flux in a 0.20 phase width, respectively, in the 2 -- 300 keV band.The values become 25\% or 110\% for main or inter-pulse GRPs, respectively, when the phase width is restricted into the 0.03 phase.Among the upper limits from the Hitomi satellite, those in the 4.5-10 keV and the 70-300 keV are obtained for the first time, and those in other bands are consistent with previous reports.Numerically, the upper limits of main- and inter-pulse GRPs in the 0.20 phase width are about (2.4 and 9.3) $\times 10^{-11}$ erg cm$^{-2}$, respectively. No significant variability in pulse profiles implies that the GRPs originated from a local place within the magnetosphere and the number of photon-emitting particles temporally increases.However, the results do not statistically rule out variations correlated with the GRPs, because the possible X-ray enhancement may appear due to a $>0.02$\% brightening of the pulse-peak flux under such conditions., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure, 6 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

The Crab nebula originated from a core-collapse supernova (SN) explosion observed in 1054 A.D. When viewed as a supernova remnant (SNR), it has an anomalously low observed ejecta mass and kinetic energy for an Fe-core collapse SN. Intensive searches were made for a massive shell that solves this discrepancy, but none has been detected. An alternative idea is that the SN1054 is an electron-capture (EC) explosion with a lower explosion energy by an order of magnitude than Fe-core collapse SNe. In the X-rays, imaging searches were performed for the plasma emission from the shell in the Crab outskirts to set a stringent upper limit to the X-ray emitting mass. However, the extreme brightness of the source hampers access to its vicinity. We thus employed spectroscopic technique using the X-ray micro-calorimeter onboard the Hitomi satellite. By exploiting its superb energy resolution, we set an upper limit for emission or absorption features from yet undetected thermal plasma in the 2-12 keV range. We also re-evaluated the existing Chandra and XMM-Newton data. By assembling these results, a new upper limit was obtained for the X-ray plasma mass of <~ 1Mo for a wide range of assumed shell radius, size, and plasma temperature both in and out of the collisional equilibrium. To compare with the observation, we further performed hydrodynamic simulations of the Crab SNR for two SN models (Fe-core versus EC) under two SN environments (uniform ISM versus progenitor wind). We found that the observed mass limit can be compatible with both SN models if the SN environment has a low density of <~ 0.03 cm-3 (Fe core) or <~ 0.1 cm-3 (EC) for the uniform density, or a progenitor wind density somewhat less than that provided by a mass loss rate of 10-5 Mo yr-1 at 20 km s-1 for the wind environment., Comment: PASJ in press. Active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback is the process by which supermassive black holes in the centres of galaxies may moderate the growth of their hosts. Gas outflows from supermassive black holes release huge quantities of energy into the interstellar medium, clearing the surrounding gas. The most extreme of these, the ultra-fast outflows (UFOs), are the subset of X-ray detected outflows with velocities higher than 10,000 km/s, believed to originate in relativistic disc winds, a few hundred gravitational radii from the black hole. The absorption features produced by these outflows are variable, but no clear link has been found between the behaviour of the X-ray continuum and the energy or equivalent width of the outflow features due to the long time-scales of quasar variability. Here, we present the detection of multiple absorption lines from an extreme ultra-fast gas flow in the X-ray spectrum of the active galactic nucleus IRAS 13224-3809, at 0.236+/-0.006 times the speed of light (71,000 km/s), where the absorption is strongly anti-correlated with the emission from the inner regions of the accretion disk. If the gas flow is identified as a genuine outflow then it is in the fastest 5 per cent of such winds, and its variability is hundreds of times faster than in other variable winds, allowing us to observe in hours what would take months in a quasar. We find signatures of the wind simultaneously in both low and high energy detectors, which are consistent with a single ionized outflow, linking the two phenomena. The detection of the wind responding to the emission from the inner disk demonstrates a connection between accretion processes occurring on very different scales, with the X-rays from within a few gravitational radii of the black hole ionizing the relativistically outflowing gas as the flux rises., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, published in Nature 02/03/17

High-resolution X-ray spectroscopy with Hitomi was expected to resolve the origin of the faint unidentified E=3.5 keV emission line reported in several low-resolution studies of various massive systems, such as galaxies and clusters, including the Perseus cluster. We have analyzed the Hitomi first-light observation of the Perseus cluster. The emission line expected for Perseus based on the XMM-Newton signal from the large cluster sample under the dark matter decay scenario is too faint to be detectable in the Hitomi data. However, the previously reported 3.5 keV flux from Perseus was anomalously high compared to the sample-based prediction. We find no unidentified line at the reported high flux level. Taking into account the XMM measurement uncertainties for this region, the inconsistency with Hitomi is at a 99% significance for a broad dark-matter line and at 99.7% for a narrow line from the gas. We do not find anomalously high fluxes of the nearby faint K line or the Ar satellite line that were proposed as explanations for the earlier 3.5 keV detections. We do find a hint of a broad excess near the energies of high-n transitions of Sxvi (E=3.44 keV rest-frame) -- a possible signature of charge exchange in the molecular nebula and another proposed explanation for the unidentified line. While its energy is consistent with XMM pn detections, it is unlikely to explain the MOS signal. We examine simultaneous X-ray and UV light curves from multi-epoch 8 day XMM Newton observations of the narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy 1H 0707-495. The simultaneous observations reveal that both X-ray and UV emission are variable and that the amplitude of the X-ray variations is significantly greater than that of the UV variations in both epochs. Using a discrete correlation function (DCF) the X-ray and UV light curves were examined for correlation on timescales up to 7.0 d. Low significance (~ 95 percent confidence) correlations with the UV leading the X-ray variations are observed. The lack of a significant correlation between the UV and X-ray bands seems consistent with the X-ray source being centrally compact and dominated by light bending close to the black hole. In addition, multi-band X-ray light curves were examined for correlations on similar timescales. Highly significant (> 99.9 per cent confidence) correlations were observed at zero lag consistent with previous studies of this AGN.

The X-ray spectra of many active galactic nuclei (AGN) exhibit a `soft excess' below 1keV, whose physical origin remains unclear. Diverse models have been suggested to account for it, including ionised reflection of X-rays from the inner part of the accretion disc, ionised winds/absorbers, and Comptonisation. The ionised reflection model suggests a natural link between the prominence of the soft excess and the Compton reflection hump strength above 10keV, but it has not been clear what hard X-ray signatures, if any, are expected from the other soft X-ray candidate models. Additionally, it has not been possible up until recently to obtain high-quality simultaneous measurements of both soft and hard X-ray emission necessary to distinguish these models, but upcoming joint XMM-NuSTAR programmes provide precisely this opportunity. In this paper, we present an extensive analysis of simulations of XMM+NuSTAR observations, using two candidate soft excess models as inputs, to determine whether such campaigns can disambiguate between them by using hard and soft X-ray observations in tandem. The simulated spectra are fit with the simplest "observer's model" of a black body and neutral reflection to characterise the strength of the soft and hard excesses. A plot of the strength of the hard excess against the soft excess strength provides a diagnostic plot which allows the soft excess production mechanism to be determined in individual sources and samples using current state-of-the-art and next generation hard X-ray enabled observatories. New X-ray (XMM-Newton) and JHKs (OMM) observations for members of the star cluster Alessi 95, which Turner et al.(2012) discovered hosts the classical Cepheid SU Cas, were used in tandem with UCAC3 (proper motion) and 2MASS observations to determine precise cluster parameters: E(J-H)=0.08+-0.02 and d=405+-15 pc. The ensuing consensus among cluster, pulsation, IUE, and trigonometric distances (d=414+-5(se)+-10(sd) pc) places SU Cas in a select group of nearby fundamental Cepheid calibrators (Delta Cep, Zeta Gem). High-resolution X-ray observations may be employed to expand that sample as the data proved pertinent for identifying numerous stars associated with SU Cas. Acquiring X-ray observations of additional fields may foster efforts to refine Cepheid calibrations used to constrain H_0., Comment: To appear in ApJ

Complexities in the X-ray spectrum of the nearby Seyfert 1.2 galaxy MCG-6-30-15 are commonly interpreted in terms of a broad iron line and the associated Compton reflection hump from the innermost relativistic regions of an accretion disk around a rapidly spinning black hole. However, an alternative model has recently been proposed in which these spectral features are caused entirely by complex (ionized and partial-covering) absorption. By considering the fluorescent emission that must accompany photoelectric absorption, we show that the absorption-dominated model over-predicts the 6.4keV iron line flux unless the marginally Compton-thick absorber responsible for the hard X-ray hump satisfies very restrictive geometric constraints. We report the results from our analysis of {\it Suzaku} XIS (0.5-10 keV) and HXD/PIN (15-40 keV) observations of five well-known local ULIRGs: {\em IRAS} F05189-2524, {\em IRAS} F08572+3915, Mrk 273, PKS 1345+12, and Arp 220. The XIS observations of F05189-2524 and Mrk 273 reveal strong iron lines consistent with Fe K$\alpha$ and changes in spectral shapes with respect to previous {\it Chandra} and {\it XMM-Newton} observations. Mrk 273 is also detected by the HXD/PIN at $\sim$1.8-$\sigma$. For F05189-2524, modeling of the data from the different epochs suggests that the change in spectral shape is likely due to the central source switching off, leaving behind a residual reflection spectrum, or an increase in the absorbing column. An increase in the covering fraction of the absorber can describe the spectral variations seen in Mrk 273, although a reduction in the intrinsic AGN luminosity cannot be formally ruled out. The {\it Suzaku} spectra of Mrk 273 are well fit by a ~94% covering fraction model with a column density of $\sim10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$. The absorption-corrected log[$L_{\rm 2-10 keV}$ / $L_{\rm IR}$] ratio is consistent with those found in PG Quasars. The 0.5-10 keV spectrum of PKS 1345+12 and Arp 220 seem unchanged from previous observations and their hard X-ray emission is not convincingly detected by the HXD/PIN. The large column density derived from CO observations and the large equivalent width of an ionized Fe line in Arp 220 can be reconciled by an ionized reflection model. F08572+3915 is undetected in both the XIS and HXD/PIN, but the analysis of unpublished {\em Chandra} data provides a new measurement at low energies., Comment: 37 pages including 4 tables and 10 figures. We report the discovery of strong soft X-ray emission lines and a hard continuum above 2 keV in the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 335 during an extremely low X-ray flux state. Mrk 335 was observed for 22 ks by XMM-Newton in July 2007 as a Target of Opportunity to examine it in its X-ray low-flux state, which was discovered with Swift. Long-term light curves suggest that this is the lowest flux state this AGN has ever been seen in. However, Mrk 335 is still sufficiently bright that its X-ray properties can be studied in detail. The X-ray continuum spectrum is very complex and requires several components to model. Statistically, partial covering and blurred reflection models work well. We confirm the presence of a strong narrow Fe line at 6.4 keV. High-resolution spectroscopy with the XMM-RGS reveals strong, soft X-ray emission lines not detected in previous, higher signal-to-noise, XMM-Newton observations, such as: highly ionized Fe lines, O VII, Ne IX and Mg XI lines. The optical/UV fluxes are similar to those previously measured with Swift.
