Abstract

We tested two summer protocols for oxytetracycline (OTC) administration on beehives to evaluate: toxicity for the bees, residues in honey and presence of genes encoding for OTC antibiotic resistance in bacteria isolated from the gut of adult bees. In July 2020, eighteen healthy colonies were divided into three groups. Two OTC treatment protocols - long and short, were devised, and one group was left untreated. We did not detect any toxicity on adult bees or brood but found OTC residues in the honey of the nest up to seven months after both treatments (210.3±221.2 µg/kg after long protocol; 216.2±238.4 µg/kg after short protocol), even in the untreated group (up to the mean 75.8±173.2 µg/kg). Antibiotic resistance genes were found, even in the untreated group, possibly due to the long exposure to antibiotics. More in-depth studies should be performed to verify how the long-term persistence of antibiotics impacted the beehive during the inactive season.

Abstract

DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is a space-borne apparatus for detecting the high-energy cosmic-rays like electrons, $\gamma$-rays, protons and heavy-ions. Plastic Scintillator Detector (PSD) is the top-most sub-detector of the DAMPE. The PSD is designed to measure the charge of incident high-energy particles and it also serves as a veto detector for discriminating $\gamma$-rays from charged particles. In this paper, PSD on-orbit calibration procedure is described, which includes five steps of pedestal, dynode correlation, response to minimum-ionizing particles (MIPs), light attenuation function and energy reconstruction. A method for reconstructing the charge of incident high energy cosmic-ray particles is introduced. The detection efficiency of each PSD strip is verified to be above 99.5%, the total efficiency of the PSD for charged particles is above 99.99%., Comment: 11 pages, 16 figures, Submitted to Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics (RAA)

Abstract

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is one of the four satellites within Strategic Pioneer Research Program in Space Science of the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS). DAMPE can detect electrons, photons in a wide energy range (5 GeV to 10 TeV) and ions up to iron (100GeV to 100 TeV). Silicon-Tungsten Tracker (STK) is one of the four subdetectors in DAMPE, providing photon-electron conversion, track reconstruction and charge identification for ions. Abstract

The Silicon Tracker (STK) is a detector of the DAMPE satellite to measure the incidence direction of high energy cosmic ray. It consists of 6 X-Y double layers of silicon micro-strip detectors with 73,728 readout channels. It's a great challenge to readout the channels and process the huge volume of data in the critical space environment. 1152 Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC) and 384 ADCs are adopted to readout the detector channels. The 192 Tracker Front-end Hybrid (TFH) modules and 8 identical Tracker Readout Board (TRB) modules are designed to control and digitalize the front signals. Abstract

Food supplements should not contain substances considered unsafe or pose a health risk to consumers. In recent years illegal adulterants have been found in various functional foods without notification of their presence or amount in the labelling. In this study, a validated method was developed and applied as a screening method to detect 124 forbidden substances belonging to 13 classes of compounds in food supplements. Liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) and a simple and rapid extraction protocol was applied to 110 food supplements collected from the internet market or during official controls in Italy. The percentage of non-compliant samples was 4.5%, relatively high compared with the official control results for these substances usually obtained on other food matrices. The results suggested the need to strengthen controls in this field to detect food supplement adulteration, which represents a potential health risk for the consumer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
