Bandung State Polytechnic for Manufacturing (POLMAN), as a high education vocational institution, implements certain portion of practical program in its workshop that aimed to build students skill competencies. For those, product media are created from structured exercises and combined with external inquiries from collaboration with industrial parties, through a system called Production Based Education (PBE). Completing the ‘job shop’ products that students are doing daily, Bench Vice as one of standard product in Polman is treated as ‘batch product’ due to its appropriated characteristic. The idea of Material Requirements Planning (MRP) method for Bench Vice handling is implemented in order to get most beneficial either for students, lecturers and institution. Since the common MRP and other control functions influence each other related with capacity and schedule, simplified MRP for Bench Vice is developed as a learning media for all involved parties in organization.

Runner is a part of channel systems that flows the molten plastics from the sprue to the gate with a specified layout. The selection of runner shapes are according to the design of the mold and the product. Usually, the diameter of half round runner is calculated by the existing empirical formula. Predictably, the dimension of the runner is one of the factors that will be influencing the injection process and the resulting product. The objectives of experiment are to know how big the runner diameter that will be influencing the taken response and to prove that the existing empirical formula for calculating the diameter of runner is efficient. The experiment is designed by Taguchi method using Minitab applications to generate data of the influences of the runner diameter. The responses of this experiment are cycle time and product mass. The experiment is conducted by using the door handle products with Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene as known as ABS material. Besides diameter of runner, there are also other factors from parameters of injection process to be considered, they are nozzle temperature and injection pressure. In reference to Taguchi method, the authors took nine times experiment with three replications or repetitions for each data of experiment. The data from experiment were analyzed and calculated by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) using Minitab applications to generate the results of experiment. As a result, the diameter of the runner had impact on the responses taken, either to cycle time and product mass as well. In conclusion, the runner diameter was ranked as the most influential compared to nozzle temperature and injection pressure

In the institution of vocational education, students skill competencies should be gained by practical program in its workshop, therefore a product media is needed. In manufacturing field, job shop is the interesting type of work for the students due to its variety challenges, machine layout advantages for variety requirements and its appropriateness with practical competency aim. In usual way these product media are initiated from structured exercise goods and research result as internal project, but with an industrial collaboration concept it could be combined with the needs from external customer with good order handling arrangement by management. Since job shop had the fluctuation consequence due to variety process required, developing practical program with Batch Product could widening students practical product spectrum. Regarding the characteristic differences between Job Shop, Batch and Research Project related with competency that students should get, creating batch and project assembly area separately from job shop caused better time schedule and order handling properness. This combination is buffering media work that keep the education operation is running, encourages the student practical product to gain comprehensive activities in each area and more focus handling of all involved parties to each kind of jobs. Moreover, the QCD requirement of such products are reached easier.

Small scale industry that produces several kinds of knive should increase its capacity due to the demand from the market. Qualitatively, this case study consisted of formulating the problems, collecting and analyzing the necessary data, and determining the possible recommendations for the improvement. While the current capacity is only 9 (nine), it is expected that 20 units of knife will produced per month. The processes sequence are: profiling (a), truing (b), beveling (c), heat treatment (d), polishing (e), assembly (f), sharpening (g) and finishing (h). The first process (a) is held by out-house vendor company while other steps from (b) to (g) are executed by in-house vendor. However, there is a high dependency upon the high skilled operator who executes the in -house processes that are mostly held manually with several unbalance successive tasks, where the processing time of one or two tasks require longer duration than others since the operation is merely relied on the operator’s skill. The idea is the improvement or change of the profiling and beveling process. Due to the poor surface quality and suboptimal hardness resulted from the laser cut machine for profiling, it is considered to subst itute this kind of process with wire cut that is capable to obtain good surface quality with certain range levels of roughness. Through simple cutting experiments on the samples, it is expected that the generated surface quality is adequate to omit the truing process (b). In addition, the cutting experiments on one, two, and four test samples resulted the shortest time that was obtained through four pieces in one cut. The technical parameters were set according to the recommendation of machine standard as referred to samples condition such as thickness and path length that affect ed the rate of wear. Meanwhile, in order to guarantee the uniformity of knife angles that are formed through beveling process (c), a grinding fixture was created. This kind of tool diminishes the dependency upon the operator’s skill as well. The main conclusions are: the substitution of laser cut with wire cut machine for the first task (a) could reduce the operation time from 60 to 39.26 minutes with good result of surface quality and the truing process (b) could be omitted; the additional grinding fixture in beveling process (c) is required and two workstations have to be assigned instead of one as in previous condition. They lead to improvements including the guarantee of the uniformity of knifes’ angle, the reduction on the operators’ skills dependency, the shortening of cycle time from 855 to 420 minutes, and the higher number of productivity from 9 units/month into 20units/month.

In ‘Bandung State Polytechnic for Manufacturing’ (POLMAN) Bandung as a vocational education institution, Production Base Education (PBE) is already implemented for years. Through this concept students are doing practical jobs that inquired by real customer from industries, with the Quality-Cost-Delivery (QCD) necessity as well. The student practical program schedule is made structurally, combined with theory and other needed contents according the planned competency for each study program in 3 years (6 semesters). Therefore, so far 2 weeks for practical and 1 week theory alternately is arranged and ran well. Students will then learn all about process and transformation of raw material to product included assembly, but they seem not enough experienced in Operation Management and integrating the related manufacture activities. There are feedbacks that POLMAN graduates have adequate capability in technical matters like designing, machining, fabrication etc. but few skills in managing could still be improved. In 321 program idea, students will get the first 3 semesters for basic matters needed, the next 2 semesters in integrated continually project program and the last 1 semester for finalization and the additional enrichment items. With this program, students will more concern and get better understanding in project handling comprehensively, integrating all related planning, relevancies among one process to others in order handling and manufacture activities, and be realized in controlling the milestone of supply chain component entities like vendor, logistic, production, sales and customer. The consequences in market and project matter preparation of course has to be highly anticipated.

There was SCH 22 component named hanger that is produced by casting, where it is one of the components applied at 1100°C work temperature. Problems on the product is the occurrence of scaling, causing the the function failure and shortening its lifetime. Generally, this scaling occurs when the material is exposed to high temperature, then kinds of iron oxide layers are arisen such as FeO, Fe3O4, and others. Based on the literature, Molybdenum can be added to the SCH 22 with maximum limit of 0.5%. The purpose of this study is to know the influence of Molybdenum to the mechanical properties and analyze the phenomenon of scaling on Heat Resistant Stainless steel Casting (SCH 22). It is expected that molybdenum could increase the scaling resistance in the high temperature. The method is making specimens through metal casting process where the molybdenum content are made to 0.3%, 0.7%, 1.1%. Each specimen should be heated at 1150°C and held for 4 hours. Then the mechanical strength and micro structure are observed to see the effect such molybdenum addition. The result is obtained that the 0.7% addition of molybdenum element can reduce the degradation due to scaling on Heat Resistance Stainless Steel Casting SCH 22.

MSWT-01, Mobile Surface Water Treatment, producing 1m3 per hour, is an alternative for providing clean water in flood disaster areas, and was developed at Bandung State Polytechnic for Manufacturing (Polman) as a part of institution research project. The combination of cartridge or membrane technology such as carbon block, MF, UF and filtration media is used for this machine, instead of coagulation-flocculation with chemical addition, due to emergency purposes related with its treatment processing time. The idea is that MSWT could be combined with Production Based Education (PBE) concept in Polman as a vocational education institution and students 'CSR', students social activities. With the number of implementation trials in real flood area condition, MSWT will be developed further based on the technical output result. The manufacturing process for improving or adding necessary features could be implemented as a student's project in PBE system. This might be an ideal combination alternative for such vocational institution that students get the product media for their PBE program and implement their work as a defined social activity. They will learn and experience related technical matters and more social interactions with the people and other disaster stakeholder as well.

Indonesia has a lot of potential flood disaster places with clean water problems faced. Various solution programs always initiated by Government, companies CSR, and people sporadical actions to provide clean water; with their advantages and disadvantages respectively. One solution is easy to operate for instance, but didn't provide adequate capacity, whereas the other had ideal performance but more costly. This situation inspired to develop a water treatment machine that could be an alternative favor. There are many methods could be choosed; whether in simple, middle or high technology, depends on water source input and output result quality. MSWT, Mobile Surface Water Treatment, is an idea for raw water in flood area, basically made for 1m3 per hour. This water treatment design adopted from combined existing technologies and related literatures. Using common ideas, the highlight is how to make such modular process put in compact design elegantly, and would be equipped with mobile feature due to make easier in operational. Through prototype level experiment trials, the machine is capable for producing clean water that suitable for sanitation and cooking/drinking purposes although using contaminated water input source. From the investment point of view, such machine could be also treated as an asset that will be used from time to time when needed, instead of made for project approach only.
