We present a comprehensive set of harmonic resistance measurements of the dampinglike (DL) and fieldlike (FL) torques in Pt/CoFeB, Pt/Co, W/CoFeB, W/Co, and YIG/Pt bilayers complemented by measurements of the DL torque using the magneto-optical Kerr effect and calibrated by nitrogen vacancy magnetometry on the same devices. The magnon creation-annihilation magnetoresistances depend strongly on temperature and on the magnetic and transport properties of each bilayer, affecting the estimate of both the DL and FL torque. The DL torque, the most important parameter for applications, is overestimated by a factor of 2 in W/CoFeB and by one order of magnitude in YIG/Pt when not accounting for the magnonic contribution to the planar Hall resistance. We further show that the magnonic contribution can be quantified by combining measurements of the nonlinear longitudinal and transverse magnetoresistances, thus providing a reliable method to measure the spin-orbit torques in different material systems.

Charge-spin conversion phenomena such as the spin Hall effect allow for the excitation of magnons in a magnetic layer by passing an electric current in an adjacent nonmagnetic conductor. We demonstrate that this current-induced modification of the magnon density generates an additional nonlinear longitudinal and transverse magnetoresistance for every magnetoresistance that depends on the magnetization. Using harmonic measurements, we evidence that these magnon creation-annihilation magnetoresistances dominate the second harmonic longitudinal and transverse resistance of thin Y$_{3}$Fe$_{5}$O$_{12}$/Pt bilayers. Our results apply to both insulating and metallic magnetic layers, elucidating the dependence of the magnetoresistance on applied current and magnetic field for a broad variety of systems excited by spin currents.

Quantum magnetometers based on spin defects in solids enable sensitive imaging of various magnetic phenomena, such as ferro- and antiferromagnetism, superconductivity, and current-induced fields. Existing protocols primarily focus on static fields or narrow-band dynamical signals, and are optimized for high sensitivity rather than fast time resolution. Here, we report detection of fast signal transients, providing a perspective for investigating the rich dynamics of magnetic systems. We experimentally demonstrate our technique using a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center magnetometer at room temperature, reaching a best-effort time resolution of 1.1 ns, an instantaneous bandwidth of 0.9 GHz, and a time-of-flight precision better than 20 ps. The time resolution can be extended to the picosecond range by use of on-chip waveguides. At these speeds, NV quantum magnetometers will become competitive with time-resolved synchrotron X-ray techniques. Spin chirality in antiferromagnets offers new opportunities for spintronics. The kagome antiferromagnet Mn3Sn is a paradigmatic material in which the antiferromagnetic order parameter can be detected and controlled by electrical means. However, direct investigation of the magnetic texture of Mn3Sn has been challenging because of the tiny moment hosted in its magnetic octupole, hindering further clarification of this unique material. Here, we address this issue by observing the stray magnetic field from Mn3Sn using a diamond quantum scanning magnetometer. The spatially-resolved intrinsic domains and domain walls in a high-quality single-crystalline Mn3Sn film quantitatively reveal the polarization angle of the magnetic octupole in the kagome plane, the domain's local magnetization, the domain wall's width and chirality, and the octupole order in domain walls. Our nanoscale investigation of Mn3Sn, a powerful complement to macroscopic measurements, paves the road for developing chiral antiferromagnetism and its potential for spintronic applications., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) can be exploited in magnetic thin films to realize lateral chirally coupled systems, providing a way to couple different sections of a magnetic racetrack and realize interconnected networks of magnetic logic gates. Here, we systematically investigate the interplay between spin-orbit torques, chiral coupling and the device design in domain wall racetracks. We show that the current-induced domain nucleation process can be tuned between single-domain nucleation and repeated nucleation of alternate domains by changing the orientation of an in-plane patterned magnetic region within an out-of-plane magnetic racetrack. Furthermore, by combining experiments and micromagnetic simulations, we show that the combination of damping-like and field-like spin-orbit torques with DMI results in selective domain wall injection in one of two arms of a Y-shaped devices depending on the current density. Such an element constitutes the basis of domain wall based demultiplexer, which is essential for distributing a single input to any one of the multiple outputs in logic circuits. Our results provide input for the design of reliable and multifunctional domain-wall circuits based on chirally coupled interfaces.

One of the key elements in spintronics research is the spin Hall effect, allowing to generate spin currents from charge currents. A large spin Hall effect is observed in materials with strong spin orbit coupling, e.g., Pt. Recent research suggests the existence of an orbital Hall effect, the orbital analogue to the spin Hall effect, which also arises in weakly spin orbit coupled materials like Ti, Mn or Cr. In Pt both effects are predicted to coexist. In any of these materials, a magnetic field perpendicular to the spin or orbital accumulation leads to additional Hanle dephasing and thereby the Hanle magnetoresistance (MR). To reveal the MR behavior of a material with both spin and orbital Hall effect, we thus study the MR of Pt thin films over a wide range of thicknesses. Careful evaluation shows that the MR of our textured samples is dominated by the ordinary MR rather than by the Hanle effect. We analyze the intrinsic properties of Pt films deposited by different groups and show that next to the resistivity also the structural properties of the film influence which MR dominates. We further show that this correlation can be found in both spin Hall active materials like Pt and orbital Hall active materials, like Ti. For both materials, the crystalline samples shows a MR attributed to the ordinary MR, whereas we find a large Hanle MR for the samples without apparent structural order. We then provide a set of rules to distinguish between the ordinary and the Hanle MR. We conclude that in all materials with a spin or orbital Hall effect the Hanle MR and the ordinary MR coexist and the purity and crystallinity of the thin film determine the dominating effect.

The writing energy for reversing the magnetization of the free layer in a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) is a key figure of merit for comparing the performances of magnetic random access memories with competing technologies. Magnetization switching of MTJs induced by spin torques typically relies on square voltage pulses. Here, we focus on the switching of perpendicular MTJs driven by spin-orbit torque (SOT), for which the magnetization reversal process consists of sequential domain nucleation and domain wall propagation. By performing a systematic study of the switching efficiency and speed as a function of pulse shape, we show that shaped pulses achieve up to 50% reduction of writing energy compared to square pulses without compromising the switching probability and speed. Time-resolved measurements of the tunneling magnetoresistance reveal how the switching times are strongly impacted by the pulse shape and temperature rise during the pulse. The optimal pulse shape consists of a preheating phase, a maximum amplitude to induce domain nucleation, and a lower amplitude phase to complete the reversal. Charge-spin interconversion processes underpin the generation of spin-orbit torques in magnetic/nonmagnetic bilayers. However, efficient sources of spin currents such as 5d metals are also efficient spin sinks, resulting in a large increase of magnetic damping. Here we show that a partially-oxidized 3d metal can generate a strong orbital torque without a significant increase in damping. Measurements of the torque efficiency {\xi} and Gilbert damping {\alpha} in CoFe/CuOx and CoFe/Pt indicate that {\xi} is comparable. The increase in damping relative to a single CoFe layer is {\Delta}{\alpha}<0.002 in CoFe/CuOx and {\Delta}{\alpha} ~ 0.005 - 0.02 in CoFe/Pt, depending on CoFe thickness. We ascribe the nonreciprocal relationship between {\Delta}{\alpha} and {\xi} in CoFe/CuOx to the small orbital-to-spin current ratio generated by magnetic resonance in CoFe and the lack of an efficient spin sink in CuOx. Our findings provide new perspectives on the efficient excitation of magnetization dynamics via the orbital torque.

The magnetic resonance of iron garnets is at the heart of rich physics and provides a crucial technology used inside microwave components. A barrier still stands in the way of integrated cryogenic devices with iron garnets, because their epitaxy requires paramagnetic substrates that cause large microwave losses at low temperatures. Finding alternative combinations of substrates and magnetic garnets is thus essential to enabling cryogenic integrated magnonics. With this motivation, we develop a new approach to the synthesis of epitaxial garnet films, based on the co-sputtering of binary oxides, enabling a precise and continuous tuning of the iron garnet composition. By substituting a controlled proportion of the iron with additional yttrium, we obtain Y$_{3}$(Y$_{x}$Fe$_{5-x}$)O$_{12}$ films of high crystalline quality that can be lattice-matched to yttrium scandium gallium garnet (YSGG), a diamagnetic substrate suitable for low-temperature applications. Ferromagnetic resonance performed at low temperatures confirms the elimination of substrate paramagnetism losses on YSGG. We also show that the Y$_{3}$(Y$_{x}$Fe$_{5-x}$)O$_{12}$ system can be matched to other substrates, such as gadolinium yttrium scandium gallium garnet and gadolinium scandium gallium garnet. Additionally, we demonstrate that Bi-substituted films of (Bi$_{0.8}$Y$_{2.2}$)Fe$_{5}$O$_{12}$ also offer ideal lattice matching to YSGG for low-temperature magnetic resonance. Orbital currents have recently emerged as a promising tool to achieve electrical control of the magnetization in thin-film ferromagnets. Efficient orbital-to-spin conversion is required in order to torque the magnetization. Here we show that the injection of an orbital current in a ferrimagnetic GdyCo100-y alloy generates strong orbital torques whose sign and magnitude can be tuned by changing the Gd content and temperature. The effective spin-orbital Hall angle reaches up to -0.25 in a GdyCo100-y/CuOx bilayer compared to +0.03 in Co/CuOx and +0.13 in GdyCo100-y/Pt. This behavior is attributed to the local orbital-to-spin conversion taking place at the Gd sites, which is about five times stronger and of the opposite sign relative to Co. Furthermore, we observe a manyfold increase in the net orbital torque at low temperature, which we attribute to the improved conversion efficiency following the magnetic ordering of the Gd and Co sublattices.

Control over quantum systems is typically achieved by time-dependent electric or magnetic fields. Alternatively, electronic spins can be controlled by spin-polarized currents. Here we demonstrate coherent driving of a single spin by a radiofrequency spin-polarized current injected from the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope into an organic molecule. With the excitation of electron paramagnetic resonance, we established dynamic control of single spins by spin torque using a local electric current. In addition our work highlights the dissipative action of the spin-transfer torque, in contrast to the nondissipative action of the magnetic field, which allows for the manipulation of individual spins based on controlled decoherence.

We study the incubation and transition times that characterize the magnetization switching induced by spin-orbit torques in nanomagnets with perpendicular anisotropy. We present a phenomenological model to interpret the dependence of the incubation time on the amplitude of the voltage pulse and assisting magnetic field and estimate the volume of the seed domain that triggers the switching. Our measurements evidence a correlation between the incubation and transition times that is mediated by the temperature variation during the electric pulse. In addition, we discuss the stochastic distributions of the two times in terms of the energy barriers opposing the nucleation and expansion of the seed domain. We propose two models based on the log-normal and gamma functions to account for the different origin of the variability of the incubation and transition times, which are associated with a single nucleation barrier and multiple pinning sites, respectively.

The Hanle magnetoresistance is a telltale signature of spin precession in nonmagnetic conductors, in which strong spin-orbit coupling generates edge spin accumulation via the spin Hall effect. Here, we report the existence of a large Hanle magnetoresistance in single layers of Mn with weak spin-orbit coupling, which we attribute to the orbital Hall effect. The simultaneous observation of a sizable Hanle magnetoresistance and vanishing small spin Hall magnetoresistance in BiYIG/Mn bilayers corroborates the orbital origin of both effects. We estimate an orbital Hall angle of 0.016, an orbital relaxation time of 2 ps and diffusion length of the order of 2 nm in disordered Mn. Our findings indicate that current-induced orbital moments are responsible for magnetoresistance effects comparable to or even larger than those determined by spin moments, and provide a tool to investigate nonequilibrium orbital transport phenomena.

Light transition metals have recently emerged as a sustainable material class for efficient spin-charge interconversion. We report measurements of current-induced spin-orbit torques generated by Ni$_{1-x}$Cu$_{x}$ alloys in perpendicularly magnetized ferrimagnetic Gd/Fe multilayers. We show that the spin-orbit torque efficiency of Ni$_{1-x}$Cu$_{x}$ increases with the Ni/Cu atomic ratio, reaching values comparable to those of Pt for Ni$_{55}$Cu$_{45}$. Furthermore, we demonstrate magnetization switching of a 20-nm-thick Gd/Fe multilayer with a threshold current that decreases with increasing Ni concentration, similar to the spin-orbit torque efficiency. Our findings show that Ni$_{1-x}$Cu$_{x}$$-$based magnetic heterostructures allow for efficient control of the magnetization by electric currents.

Topological insulators have attracted great interest as generators of spin-orbit torques (SOTs) in spintronic devices. Bi\textsubscript{1-x}Sb\textsubscript{x} is a prominent topological insulator that has a high charge-to-spin conversion efficiency. However, the origin and magnitude of the SOTs induced by current-injection in Bi\textsubscript{1-x}Sb\textsubscript{x} remain controversial. Here we report the investigation of the SOTs and spin Hall magnetoresistance resulting from charge-to-spin conversion in twin-free epitaxial layers of Bi\textsubscript{0.9}Sb\textsubscript{0.1}(0001) coupled to FeCo, and compare it with that of amorphous Bi\textsubscript{0.9}Sb\textsubscript{0.1}. We find a large charge-to-spin conversion efficiency of 1 in the first case and less than 0.1 in the second, confirming crystalline Bi\textsubscript{0.9}Sb\textsubscript{0.1} as a strong spin injector material. The SOTs and spin Hall magnetoresistance are independent of the direction of the electric current, indicating that charge-to-spin conversion in single-crystal Bi\textsubscript{0.9}Sb\textsubscript{0.1}(0001) is isotropic despite the strong anisotropy of the topological surface states. Further, we find that the damping-like SOT has a non-monotonic temperature dependence with a minimum at 20~K. By correlating the SOT with resistivity and weak antilocalization measurements, we conclude that charge-spin conversion occurs via thermally-excited holes from the bulk states above 20~K, and conduction through the isotropic surface states with increasing spin polarization due to decreasing electron-electron scattering below 20~K., Comment: Supporting information at https://doi.org/10.1002/adma.202304905

Current-induced spin-orbit torques (SOTs) enable fast and efficient manipulation of the magnetic state of magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs), making it attractive for memory, in-memory computing, and logic applications. However, the requirement of the external magnetic field to achieve deterministic switching in perpendicular magnetized SOT-MTJs limits its implementation for practical applications. Here, we introduce a field-free switching (FFS) solution for the SOT-MTJ device by shaping the SOT channel to create a "bend" in the SOT current. The resulting bend in the charge current creates a spatially non-uniform spin current, which translates into inhomogeneous SOT on an adjacent magnetic free layer enabling deterministic switching. We demonstrate FFS experimentally on scaled SOT-MTJs at nanosecond time scales. This proposed scheme is scalable, material-agnostic, and readily compatible with wafer-scale manufacturing, thus creating a pathway for developing purely current-driven SOT systems.

Two-dimensional arrays of magnetically coupled nanomagnets provide a mesoscopic platform for exploring collective phenomena as well as realizing a broad range of spintronic devices. In particular, the magnetic coupling plays a critical role in determining the nature of the cooperative behaviour and providing new functionalities in nanomagnet-based devices. Here, we create coupled Ising-like nanomagnets in which the coupling between adjacent nanomagnetic regions can be reversibly converted between parallel and antiparallel through solid-state ionic gating. This is achieved with the voltage-control of magnetic anisotropies in a nanosized region where the symmetric exchange interaction favours parallel alignment and the antisymmetric exchange interaction, namely the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, favours antiparallel alignment. Applying this concept to a two-dimensional lattice, we demonstrate a voltage-controlled phase transition in artificial spin ices. Furthermore, we achieve an addressable control of the individual couplings and realize an electrically programmable Ising network, which opens up new avenues to design nanomagnet-based logic devices and neuromorphic computers

Strong, adjustable magnetic couplings are of great importance to all devices based on magnetic materials. Controlling the coupling between adjacent regions of a single magnetic layer, however, is challenging. In this work, we demonstrate strong exchange-based coupling between arbitrarily shaped regions of a single ferrimagnetic layer. This is achieved by spatially patterning the compensation temperature of the ferrimagnet by either oxidation or He+ irradiation. The coupling originates at the lateral interface between regions with different compensation temperature and scales inversely with their width. We show that this coupling generates large lateral exchange coupling fields and we demonstrate its application to control the switching of magnetically compensated dots with an electric current.

Magnetic skyrmions are compact chiral spin textures that exhibit a rich variety of topological phenomena and hold potential for developing high-density memory devices and novel computing schemes driven by spin currents. Here, we demonstrate room temperature interfacial stabilization and current-driven control of skyrmion bubbles in the ferrimagnetic insulator Tm3Fe5O12 (TmIG) coupled to Pt. We track the current-induced motion of individual skyrmion bubbles. The ferrimagnetic order of the crystal together with the interplay of spin-orbit torques and pinning determine the skyrmion dynamics in TmIG and result in a strong skyrmion Hall effect characterized by a negative deflection angle and hopping motion. Further, we show that the velocity and depinning threshold of the skyrmion bubbles can be modified by exchange coupling TmIG to an in-plane magnetized Y3Fe5O12 layer, which distorts the spin texture of the skyrmions and leads to a directional-dependent rectification of their dynamics. We report the observation of a unidirectional magnetoresistance (UMR) that originates from the nonequilibrium orbital momentum induced by an electric current in a naturally oxidized Cu/Co bilayer. The orbital-UMR scales with the torque efficiency due to the orbital Rashba-Edelstein effect upon changing the Co thickness and temperature, reflecting their common origin. We attribute the UMR to orbital-dependent electron scattering and orbital-to-spin conversion in the ferromagnetic layer. In contrast to the spin-current induced UMR, the magnon contribution to the orbital-UMR is absent in thin Co layers, which we ascribe to the lack of coupling between low energy magnons and orbital current. The magnon contribution to the UMR emerges in Co layers thicker than about 5 nm, which is comparable to the orbital-to-spin conversion length. Spin-orbit torques (SOT) provide a versatile tool to manipulate the magnetization of diverse classes of materials and devices using electric currents, leading to novel spintronic memory and computing approaches. In parallel to spin transfer torques (STT), which have emerged as a leading non-volatile memory technologie, SOT broaden the scope of current-induced magnetic switching to applications that run close to the clock speed of the central processing unit and unconventional computing architectures. In this paper, we review the fundamental characteristics of SOT and their use to switch magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) devices, the elementary unit of the magnetoresistive random access memory (MRAM). In the first part, we illustrate the physical mechanisms that drive the SOT and magnetization reversal in nanoscale structures. In the second part, we focus on the SOT-MTJ cell. We discuss the anatomy of the MTJ in terms of materials and stack development, summarize the figures of merit for SOT switching, review the field-free operation of perpendicularly magnetized MTJs, and present options to combine SOT, STT and voltage-gate assisted switching. In the third part, we consider SOT-MRAMs in the perspective of circuit integration processes, introducing considerations on scaling and performance, as well as macro-design architectures. We thus bridge the fundamental description of SOT-driven magnetization dynamics with an application-oriented perspective, including device and system-level considerations, goals, and challenges.

The orbital Hall effect provides an alternative means to the spin Hall effect to convert a charge current into a flow of angular momentum. Recently, compelling signatures of orbital Hall effects have been identified in 3d transition metals. Here, we report a systematic study of the generation, transmission, and conversion of orbital currents in heterostructures comprising 3d, 5d, and 4f metals. We show that the orbital Hall conductivity of Cr reaches giant values of the order of 5*10^5 Ohm^{-1} m^{-1} and that Pt presents a strong orbital Hall effect in addition to the spin Hall effect. Measurements performed as a function of thickness of nonmagnetic Cr, Mn, and Pt layers and ferromagnetic Co and Ni layers reveal how the orbital and spin currents compete or assist each other in determining the spin-orbit torques acting on the magnetic layer. We further show how this interplay can be drastically modulated by introducing 4 f spacers between the nonmagnetic and magnetic layers. Gd and Tb act as very efficient orbital-to-spin current converters, boosting the spin-orbit torques generated by Cr by a factor of 4 and reversing the sign of the torques generated by Pt. To interpret our results, we present a generalized drift-diffusion model that includes both spin and orbital Hall effects and describes their interconversion mediated by spin-orbit coupling.

Current-induced spin-orbit torques provide a versatile tool for switching magnetic devices. In perpendicular magnets, the dampinglike component of the torque is the main driver of magnetization reversal. The degree to which the fieldlike torque assists the switching is a matter of debate. Here we study the switching of magnetic tunnel junctions with a CoFeB free layer and either W or Ta underlayers, which have a ratio of fieldlike to dampinglike torque of 0.3 and 1, respectively. We show that the fieldlike torque can either assist or hinder the switching of CoFeB when the static in-plane magnetic field required to define the polarity of spin-orbit torque switching has a component transverse to the current. In particular, the non-collinear alignment of the field and current can be exploited to increase the switching efficiency and reliability compared to the standard collinear alignment. By probing individual switching events in real-time, we also show that the combination of transverse magnetic field and fieldlike torque can accelerate or decelerate the reversal onset. We validate our observations using micromagnetic simulations and extrapolate the results to materials with different torque ratios. Finally, we propose device geometries that leverage the fieldlike torque for density increase in memory applications and synaptic weight generation.

We measured the spin-orbit torques (SOTs), current-induced switching, and domain wall (DW) motion in synthetic ferrimagnets consisting of Co/Tb layers with differing stacking order grown on a Pt underlayer. We find that the SOTs, magnetic anisotropy, compensation temperature and SOT-induced switching are highly sensitive to the stacking order of Co and Tb and to the element in contact with Pt. Our study further shows that Tb is an efficient SOT generator when in contact with Co, such that its position in the stack can be adjusted to generate torques additive to those generated by Pt. With optimal stacking and layer thickness, the dampinglike SOT efficiency reaches up to 0.3, which is more than twice that expected from the Pt/Co bilayer. Moreover, the magnetization can be easily switched by the injection of pulses with current density of about 0.5-2*107A/cm2 despite the extremely high perpendicular magnetic anisotropy barrier (up to 7.8 T). Efficient switching is due to the combination of large SOTs and low saturation magnetization owing to the ferrimagnetic character of the multilayers. We observed current-driven DW motion in the absence of any external field, which is indicative of homochiral N\'eel-type DWs stabilized by the interfacial Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction. These results show that the stacking order in transition metal/rare-earth synthetic ferrimagnets plays a major role in determining the magnetotransport properties relevant for spintronic applications.

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) can provide unique insight into the chemical structure and magnetic properties of dopants in oxide and semiconducting materials that are of interest for applications in electronics, catalysis, and quantum sensing. Here, we demonstrate that EPR in combination with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) allows for probing the bonding and charge state of alkali metal atoms on an ultrathin magnesium oxide layer on a Ag substrate. We observe a magnetic moment of $1\mu_\mathrm{B}$ for Li$_2$, LiNa, and Na$_2$ dimers corresponding to spin radicals with a charge state of $+1e$. Single alkali atoms have the same charge state and no magnetic moment. The ionization of the adsorbates is attributed to charge transfer through the oxide to the metal substrate. Our work highlights the potential of EPR-STM to provide insight into dopant atoms that are relevant for the control of the electrical properties of surfaces and nanodevices., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures

The manipulation of antiferromagnetic order by means of spin-orbit torques opens unprecedented opportunities to exploit the dynamics of antiferromagnets in spintronic devices. In this work, we investigate the current-induced switching of the magnetic octupole vector in the Weyl antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Sn as a function of pulse shape, field, temperature, and time. We find that the switching behavior can be either bistable or tristable depending on the temporal structure of the current pulses. Time-resolved Hall effect measurements reveal that Mn$_3$Sn switching proceeds via a two-step demagnetization-remagnetization process caused by self-heating over a timescale of tens of ns followed by cooling in the presence of spin-orbit torques. The possibility of electrically exciting and detecting magnon currents in magnetic insulators has opened exciting perspectives for transporting spin information in electronic devices. However, the role of the magnetic field and the nonlocal thermal gradients on the magnon transport remain unclear. Here, by performing nonlocal harmonic voltage measurements, we investigate magnon transport in perpendicularly magnetized ultrathin Tm3Fe5O12 (TmIG) films coupled to Pt electrodes. We show that the first harmonic nonlocal voltage captures spin-driven magnon transport in TmIG, as expected, and the second harmonic is dominated by thermoelectric voltages driven by current-induced thermal gradients at the detector. The magnon diffusion length in TmIG is found to be on the order of 0.3 {\mu}m at 0.5 T and gradually decays to 0.2 {\mu}m at 0.8 T, which we attribute to the suppression of the magnon relaxation time due to the increase of the Gilbert damping with field. By performing current, magnetic field, and distance dependent nonlocal and local measurements we demonstrate that the second harmonic nonlocal voltage exhibits five thermoelectric contributions, which originate from the nonlocal spin Seebeck effect and the ordinary, planar, spin, and anomalous Nernst effects. Our work provides a guide on how to disentangle magnon signals from diverse thermoelectric voltages of spin and magnetic origin in nonlocal magnon devices, and establish the scaling laws of the thermoelectric voltages in metal/insulator bilayers., Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures

The establishment of chiral coupling in thin magnetic films with inhomogeneous anisotropy has led to the development of artificial systems of fundamental and technological interest. The chiral coupling itself is enabled by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) enforced by the patterned noncollinear magnetization. Here, we create a domain wall track with out-of-plane magnetization coupled on each side to a narrow parallel strip with in-plane magnetization. With this we show that the chiral torques emerging from the DMI at the boundary between the regions of noncollinear magnetization in a single magnetic layer can be used to bias the domain wall velocity. To tune the chiral torques, the design of the magnetic racetracks can be modified by varying the width of the tracks or the width of the transition region between noncollinear magnetizations, reaching effective chiral magnetic fields of up to 7.8 mT. Furthermore, we show how the magnitude of the chiral torques can be estimated by measuring asymmetric domain wall velocities, and demonstrate spontaneous domain wall motion propelled by intrinsic torques even in the absence of any external driving force.

We report on the occurrence of strong interlayer Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) between an in-plane magnetized Co layer and a perpendicularly magnetized TbFe layer through a Pt spacer. The DMI causes a chiral coupling that favors one-handed orthogonal magnetic configurations of Co and TbFe, which we reveal through Hall effect and magnetoresistance measurements. The DMI coupling mediated by Pt causes effective magnetic fields on either layer of up to 10-15 mT, which decrease monotonously with increasing Pt thickness. Ru, Ta, and Ti spacers mediate a significantly smaller coupling compared to Pt, highlighting the essential role of Pt in inducing the interlayer DMI. These results are relevant to understand and maximize the interlayer coupling induced by the DMI as well as to design spintronic devices with chiral spin textures.

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) performed with a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) allows for probing the spin excitation of single atomic species with MHz energy resolution. One of the basic applications of conventional EPR is the precise determination of magnetic moments. However, in an STM, the local magnetic fields of the spin-polarized tip can introduce systematic errors in the measurement of the magnetic moments by EPR. We propose to solve this issue by finding tip-sample distances at which the EPR resonance shift caused by the magnetic field of the tip is minimized. To this end, we measure the dependence of the resonance field on the tip-sample distance at different radiofrequencies and identify specific distances for which the true magnetic moment is found. Additionally, we show that the tip's influence can be averaged out by using magnetically bistable tips, which provide a complementary method to accurately measure the magnetic moment of surface atoms using EPR-STM.

Topological insulators have emerged as an important material class for efficient spin-charge interconversion. Most topological insulators considered to date are binary or ternary compounds, with the exception of $\alpha$-Sn. Here we report a comprehensive characterization of the growth, magnetotransport properties, and current-induced spin-orbit torques of $\alpha$-Sn and $\beta$-Sn-based ferromagnetic heterostructures. We show that $\alpha$-Sn grown with a Bi surfactant on CdTe(001) promotes large spin-orbit torques in a ferromagnetic FeCo layer at room temperature, comparable to Pt, whereas $\alpha$-Sn grown without Bi surfactant and the non-topological phase, $\beta$-Sn, induce lower torques. The dampinglike and fieldlike spin-orbit torque efficiency in $\alpha$-Sn with Bi are 0.12 and 0.18, respectively. Further, we show that $\alpha$-Sn grown with and without Bi presents a spin Hall-like magnetoresistance comparable to that found in heavy metal/ferromagnet bilayers. Our work demonstrates direct and efficient charge-to-spin conversion in $\alpha$-Sn ferromagnetic heterostructures, showing that $\alpha$-Sn is a promising material for current-induced magnetization control in spintronic devices.

Spin transport via magnon diffusion in magnetic insulators is important for a broad range of spin-based phenomena and devices. However, the absence of the magnon equivalent of an electric force is a bottleneck. In this work, we demonstrate the controlled generation of magnon drift currents in yttrium iron garnet/platinum heterostructures. By performing electrical injection and detection of incoherent magnons, we find magnon drift currents that stem from the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We can further control the magnon drift by the orientation of the magnetic field. The drift current changes the magnon propagation length by up to $\pm$ 6 % relative to diffusion. We generalize the magnonic spin transport theory to include a finite drift velocity resulting from any inversion asymmetric interaction, and obtain results consistent with our experiments., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We use three-terminal magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) designed for field-free switching by spin-orbit torques (SOTs) to systematically study the impact of dual voltage pulses on the switching performances. We show that the concurrent action of an SOT pulse and an MTJ bias pulse allows for reducing the critical switching energy below the level typical of spin transfer torque while preserving the ability to switch the MTJ on the sub-ns time scale. By performing dc and real-time electrical measurements, we discriminate and quantify three effects arising from the MTJ bias: the voltage-controlled change of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, current-induced heating, and the spin transfer torque. The experimental results are supported by micromagnetic modeling. We observe that, depending on the pulse duration and the MTJ diameter, different effects take a lead in assisting the SOTs in the magnetization reversal process. Finally, we present a compact model that allows for evaluating the impact of each effect due to the MTJ bias on the critical switching parameters. Our results provide input to optimize the switching of three-terminal devices as a function of time, size, and material parameters.

We investigate the inversion process of magnetic domain walls (DWs) propagating through synthetic noncollinear magnetic textures, whereby an up/down DW can be transformed into a down/up DW and vice versa. We exploit the lateral coupling between out-of-plane and in-plane magnetic regions induced by the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in Pt/Co/AlOx trilayers to realize both field-driven and current-driven magnetic DW inverters. The inverters consist of narrow in-plane magnetic regions embedded in out-of-plane DW racetracks. Magnetic imaging and micromagnetic simulations provide insight into the DW inversion mechanism, showing that DW inversion proceeds by annihilation of the incoming domain on one side of the in-plane region and nucleation of a reverse domain on the opposite side. By changing the shape of the in-plane magnetic region, we show that the DW inversion efficiency can be tuned by adjusting the ratio between the chiral coupling energy at the inverter boundary and the energy cost of nucleating a reverse domain. Finally, we realize an asymmetric DW inverter that has nonreciprocal inversion properties and demonstrate that such a device can operate as a DW diode. Our results provide input for the versatile manipulation of DWs in magnetic racetracks and the design of efficient DW devices for nonvolatile magnetic logic schemes.

We report on the combination of current-induced spin-orbit torques and giant magnetoresistance in a single device to achieve all-electrical write and read out of the magnetization. The device consists of perpendicularly magnetized TbCo and Co layers separated by a Pt or Cu spacer. Current injection through such layers exerts spin-orbit torques and switches the magnetization of the Co layer while the TbCo magnetization remains fixed. Subsequent current injection of lower amplitude senses the relative orientation of the magnetization of the Co and TbCo layers, which results in two distinct resistance levels for parallel and antiparallel alignment due to the current-in-plane giant magnetoresistance effect. We further show that the giant magnetoresistance of devices including a single TbCo/spacer/Co trilayer can be improved from 0.02% to 6% by using a Cu spacer instead of Pt. This type of devices offers an alternative route to a two terminal spintronic memory that can be fabricated with moderate effort., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures

We show that the coupling between two ferromagnetic layers separated by a nonmagnetic spacer can be used to control the depinning of domain walls and induce unidirectional domain wall propagation. We investigated CoFeB/Ti/CoFeB trilayers where the easy axis of the magnetization of the top CoFeB layer is out-of-plane and that of the bottom layer is in-plane. Using Magneto-optic Kerr effect microscopy, we find that the depinning of a domain wall in the perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB layer is influenced by the orientation of the magnetization of the in-plane layer, which gives rise to a field-driven asymmetric domain expansion. This effect occurs due to the magnetic coupling between the internal magnetization of the domain wall and the magnetization of the in-plane CoFeB layer, which breaks the symmetry of up-down and down-up homochiral N\'eel domain walls in the perpendicular CoFeB layer. Micromagnetic simulations support these findings by showing that the interlayer coupling either opposes or favors the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the domain wall, thereby generating an imbalance in the depinning fields. This effect also allows for artificially controlling the chirality and dynamics of domain walls in magnetic layers lacking a strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures

Current-induced spin-transfer torques (STT) and spin-orbit torques (SOT) enable the electrical switching of magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) in nonvolatile magnetic random access memories. In order to develop faster memory devices, an improvement of the timescales underlying the current driven magnetization dynamics is required. Here we report all-electrical time-resolved measurements of magnetization reversal driven by SOT in a three-terminal MTJ device. Single-shot measurements of the MTJ resistance during current injection reveal that SOT switching involves a stochastic two-step process consisting of a domain nucleation time and propagation time, which have different genesis, timescales, and statistical distributions compared to STT switching. We further show that the combination of SOT, STT, and voltage control of magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) leads to reproducible sub-ns switching with a spread of the cumulative switching time smaller than 0.2 ns. Our measurements unravel the combined impact of SOT, STT, and VCMA in determining the switching speed and efficiency of MTJ devices.

The ability to engineer the interactions in assemblies of nanoscale magnets is central to the development of artificial spin systems and spintronic technologies. Following the emergence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in thin film magnetism, new routes have been opened to couple the nanomagnets via strong chiral interactions, which is complementary to the established dipolar and exchange coupling mechanisms. In this Perspective, we review recent progress in the engineering of synthetic magnets coupled by the interlayer and intralayer DMI. We show how multilayer chiral magnetic structures and two-dimensional synthetic antiferromagnets, skyrmions, and artificial spin systems can be realized by simultaneous control of the DMI and magnetic anisotropy. In addition, we show that, with the combination of DMI and current-induced spin-orbit torques, field-free switching of synthetic magnetic elements is obtained as well as all-electric domain wall logic circuits.

We report time-resolved measurements of magnetization switching by spin-orbit torques in the absence of an external magnetic field in perpendicularly magnetized magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJ). Field-free switching is enabled by the dipolar field of an in-plane magnetized layer integrated above the MTJ stack, the orientation of which determines the switching polarity. Real-time single-shot measurements provide direct evidence of magnetization reversal and switching distributions. Close to the critical switching voltage we observe stochastic reversal events due to a finite incubation delay preceding the magnetization reversal. Upon increasing the pulse amplitude to twice the critical voltage the reversal becomes quasi-deterministic, leading to reliable bipolar switching at sub-ns timescales in zero external field. We further investigate the switching probability as a function of dc bias of the MTJ and external magnetic field, providing insight on the parameters that determine the critical switching voltage.

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy is widely employed to characterize paramagnetic complexes. Recently, EPR combined with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) achieved single-spin sensitivity with sub-angstrom spatial resolution. The excitation mechanism of EPR in STM, however, is broadly debated, raising concerns about widespread application of this technique. Here, we present an extensive experimental study and modelling of EPR-STM of Fe and hydrogenated Ti atoms on an MgO surface. Our results support a piezoelectric coupling mechanism, in which the EPR species oscillate adiabatically in the inhomogeneous magnetic field of the STM tip. An analysis based on Bloch equations combined with atomic-multiplet calculations identifies different EPR driving forces. Specifically, transverse magnetic-field gradients drive the spin-1/2 hydrogenated Ti, whereas longitudinal magnetic-field gradients drive the spin-2 Fe. Additionally, our results highlight the potential of piezoelectric coupling to induce electric dipole moments, thereby broadening the scope of EPR-STM to nonpolar species and nonlinear excitation schemes.

Controlling interfacial interactions in magnetic/topological insulator heterostructures is a major challenge for the emergence of novel spin-dependent electronic phenomena. As for any rational design of heterostructures that rely on proximity effects, one should ideally retain the overall properties of each component while tuning interactions at the interface. However, in most inorganic interfaces interactions are too strong, consequently perturbing, and even quenching, both the magnetic moment and the topological surface states at each side of the interface. Here we show that these properties can be preserved by using ligand chemistry to tune the interaction of magnetic ions with the surface states. By depositing Co-based porphyrin and phthalocyanine monolayers on the surface of Bi$_2$Te$_3$ thin films, robust interfaces are formed that preserve undoped topological surface states as well as the pristine magnetic moment of the divalent Co ions. The selected ligands allow us to tune the interfacial hybridization within this weak interaction regime. These results, which are in stark contrast with the observed suppression of the surface state at the first quintuple layer of Bi$_2$Se$_3$ induced by the interaction with Co phthalocyanines, demonstrate the capability of planar metal-organic molecules to span interactions from the strong to the weak limit.

Oxidation strongly influences the properties of magnetic layers employed in spintronic devices. We study the effect of oxidation on the structural, magnetic, and electrical properties as well as current-induced spin-orbit torques (SOTs) in Pt/Co/AlOx, Pt/CoOx/Co/AlOx, and PtOx/Co/AlOx layers. We show how the saturation magnetization, perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, anomalous Hall resistance, and SOT are systematically affected by the degree of oxidation of both the Pt/Co and Co/Al interfaces. Oxidation of the Co/Al interface results in a 21% and 42% variation of the dampinglike and fieldlike SOT efficiencies, which peak at 0.14 and 0.07, respectively. The insertion of a paramagnetic CoOx layer between Pt and Co maintains a very strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and improves the dampinglike and fieldlike SOT efficiencies, up to 0.26 and 0.20, respectively. In contrast with recent reports, we do not find that the oxidation of Pt leads to a significant enhancement of the torques. Rather, we find that oxygen migrates from Pt to the Co and Al layers, leading to a time-dependent oxidation profile and an effective spin Hall conductivity that decreases with increasing oxygen concentration. Finally, we study current-induced switching in Pt/Co/AlOx with different degrees of oxidation and find a linear relationship between the critical switching current and the effective magnetic anisotropy controlled by the oxidation of Al. These results highlight the importance of interfaces and oxidation effects on the SOT and magnetotransport properties of heavy metal/ferromagnet/oxide trilayers and provide information on how to improve the SOT efficiency and magnetization-switching characteristics of these systems.

Memory and logic devices that encode information in magnetic domains rely on the controlled injection of domain walls to reach their full potential. In this work, we exploit the chiral coupling induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction between in-plane and out-of-plane magnetized regions of a Pt/Co/AlO\textsubscript{x} trilayer in combination with current-driven spin-orbit torques to control the injection of domain walls into magnetic conduits. We demonstrate that the current-induced domain nucleation is strongly inhibited for magnetic configurations stabilized by the chiral coupling and promoted for those that have the opposite chirality. These configurations allow for efficient domain wall injection using current densities of the order of $4\times$\SI{e11}{A m^{-2}}, which are lower than those used in other injection schemes. Furthermore, by setting the orientation of the in-plane magnetization using an external field, we demonstrate the use of a chiral domain wall injector to create a controlled sequence of alternating domains in a racetrack structure driven by a steady stream of unipolar current pulses.

We studied the effect of inserting 0.5 nm-thick spacer layers (Ti, V, Cr, Mo, W) at the Pt/Co interface on the spin-orbit torques, Hall effect, magnetoresistance, saturation magnetization, and magnetic anisotropy. We find that the damping-like spin-orbit torque decreases substantially for all samples with a spacer layer compared to the reference Pt/Co bilayer, consistently with the opposite sign of the atomic spin-orbit coupling constant of the spacer elements relative to Pt. The reduction of the damping-like torque is monotonic with atomic number for the isoelectronic 3d, 4d, and 5d elements, with the exception of V that has a stronger effect than Cr. The field-like spin-orbit torque almost vanishes for all spacer layers irrespective of their composition, suggesting that this torque predominantly originates at the Pt/Co interface. The anomalous Hall effect, magnetoresistance, and saturation magnetization are also all reduced substantially, whereas the sheet resistance is increased in the presence of the spacer layer. Finally, we evidence a correlation between the amplitude of the spin-orbit torques, the spin Hall-like magnetoresistance, and the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Ultra-fast dynamics, insensitivity to external magnetic fields, or absence of magnetic stray fields are examples of properties that make antiferromagnets of potential use in the development of spintronic devices. Similar to their ferromagnetic counterparts, antiferromagnets can store information in the orientations of the collective magnetic order vector. However, also in analogy to ferromagnets, the readout magnetoresistivity signals in simple antiferromagnetic films have been weak and the extension of the electrical reorientation mechanism to optics has not been achieved. Here we report reversible and reproducible quenching of an antiferromagnetic CuMnAs film by either electrical or ultrashort optical pulses into nano-fragmented domain states. The resulting resistivity changes approach 20\% at room temperature, which is comparable to the giant magnetoresistance ratios in ferromagnetic multilayers. We also obtain a signal readout by optical reflectivity. The analog time-dependent switching and relaxation characteristics of our devices can mimic functionality of spiking neural network components.

Spin-based electronics has evolved into a major field of research that broadly encompasses different classes of materials, magnetic systems, and devices. This review describes recent advances in spintronics that have the potential to impact key areas of information technology and microelectronics. We identify four main axes of research: nonvolatile memories, magnetic sensors, microwave devices, and beyond-CMOS logic. We discuss state-of-the-art developments in these areas as well as opportunities and challenges that will have to be met, both at the device and system level, in order to integrate novel spintronic functionalities and materials in mainstream microelectronic platforms., Comment: Review written by the SpinFactory European Consortium

We investigate the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) of ferromagnetic CoNi microhelices fabricated by electrodeposition and laser printing. We find that the geometry of the three-dimensional winding determines a characteristic angular and field-dependence of the AMR due to the competition between helical shape anisotropy and external magnetic field. Moreover, we show that there is an additional contribution to the AMR that scales proportionally to the applied current and depends on the helix chirality. We attribute this contribution to the self magnetic field induced by the current, which modifies the orientation of the magnetization relative to the current flow along the helix. We report on the switching of the in-plane magnetization of thin yttrium iron garnet (YIG)/Pt bilayers induced by an electrical current. The switching is either field-induced and assisted by a dc current, or current-induced and assisted by a static magnetic field. The reversal of the magnetization occurs at a current density as low as $10^5$~A/cm$^{2}$ and magnetic fields of $\sim 40$~$\mu$T, two orders of magnitude smaller than in ferromagnetic metals, consistently with the weak uniaxial anisotropy of the YIG layers. We use the transverse component of the spin Hall magnetoresistance to sense the magnetic orientation of YIG while sweeping the current. Our measurements and simulations reveal that the current-induced effective field responsible for switching is due to the Oersted field generated by the current flowing in the Pt layer rather than by spin-orbit torques, and that the switching efficiency is influenced by pinning of the magnetic domains.

We report on the structure, magnetization, magnetic anisotropy, and domain morphology of ultrathin yttrium iron garnet (YIG)/Pt films with thickness ranging from 3 to 90 nm. We find that the saturation magnetization is close to the bulk value in the thickest films and decreases towards low thickness with a strong reduction below 10 nm. We characterize the magnetic anisotropy by measuring the transverse spin Hall magnetoresistance as a function of applied field. Our results reveal strong easy plane anisotropy fields of the order of 50-100 mT, which add to the demagnetizing field, as well as weaker in-plane uniaxial anisotropy ranging from 10 to 100 $\mu$T. The in-plane easy axis direction changes with thickness, but presents also significant fluctuations among samples with the same thickness grown on the same substrate. X-ray photoelectron emission microscopy reveals the formation of zigzag magnetic domains in YIG films thicker than 10 nm, which have dimensions larger than several 100 $\mu$m and are separated by achiral N\'{e}el-type domain walls. Recent reports of current-induced switching of ferrimagnetic oxides coupled to a heavy metal layer have opened realistic prospects for implementing magnetic insulators into electrically addressable spintronic devices. However, key aspects such as the configuration and dynamics of magnetic domain walls driven by electrical currents in insulating oxides remain unexplored. Here, we investigate the internal structure of the domain walls in Tm3Fe5O12 (TmIG) and TmIG/Pt bilayers and demonstrate their efficient manipulation by spin-orbit torques with velocities of up to 400 m s$^{-1}$ and minimal current threshold for domain wall flow of 5 x 10$^{6}$ A cm$^{-2}$. Domain wall racetracks embedded in TmIG are defined by the deposition of Pt current lines, which allow us to control the domain propagation and magnetization switching in selected regions of an extended magnetic layer. Scanning nitrogen-vacancy magnetometry reveals that the domain walls of thin TmIG films are N\'eel walls with left-handed chirality, with the domain wall magnetization rotating towards an intermediate N\'eel-Bloch configuration upon deposition of Pt. These results indicate the presence of a sizable interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in TmIG, which leads to novel possibilities to control the formation of chiral spin textures in magnetic insulators. Ultimately, domain wall racetracks provide an efficient scheme to pattern the magnetic landscape of TmIG in a fast and reversible way
