Background and objective: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a clinical condition associated with higher rates of overall and cardiovascular mortality. There is scarce evidence regarding the impact of MetS on surgical and functional outcomes for patients undergoing partial nephrectomy (PN) for clinically localized small renal masses (SRMs). Methods: We analyzed data from a prospectively maintained institutional database for 690 patients with cT1a renal cancer undergoing PN between 2000 and 2023 at a tertiary referral center. MetS was defined according to international guidelines. Cumulative incidence curves were used to estimate the 5-yr risk of stage IIIB–V chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage and other-cause mortality (OCM). Multivariable regression models were used to analyze the impact of MetS on the risk of complications, acute kidney injury (AKI), stage IIIB–V CKD, and OCM. BackgroundRapid molecular methods such as the line probe assay (LPA) and Xpert® MTB/RIF assay (Xpert) have been recommended by the World Health Organization for drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) diagnosis. We conducted an interventional trial in DR-TB reference centers in Brazil to evaluate the impact of the use of LPA and Xpert.MethodsPatients with DR-TB were eligible if their drug susceptibility testing results were available to the treating physician at the time of consultation. The standard reference MGITTM 960 was compared with Xpert (arm 1) and LPA (arm 2). BackgroundThe implementation of rapid drug susceptibility testing (DST) is a current global priority for TB control. However, data are scarce on patient-relevant outcomes for presumptive diagnosis of drug-resistant tuberculosis (pDR-TB) evaluated under field conditions in high burden countries.MethodsObservational study of pDR-TB patients referred by primary and secondary health units. TB reference centers addressing DR-TB in five cities in Brazil. Patients age 18 years and older were eligible if pDR-TB, culture positive results for Mycobacterium tuberculosis and, if no prior DST results from another laboratory were used by a physician to start anti-TB treatment. The outcome measures were median time from triage to initiating appropriate anti-TB treatment, empirical treatment and, the treatment outcomes.ResultsBetween February,16th, 2011 and February, 15th, 2012, among 175 pDR TB cases, 110 (63.0%) confirmed TB cases with DST results were enrolled. Among study participants, 72 (65.5%) were male and 62 (56.4%) aged 26 to 45 years. At triage, empirical treatment was given to 106 (96.0%) subjects. Among those, 85 were treated with first line drugs and 21 with second line. Median time for DST results was 69.5 [interquartile - IQR: 35.7-111.0] days and, for initiating appropriate anti-TB treatment, the median time was 1.0 (IQR: 0-41.2) days. Among 95 patients that were followed-up during the first 6 month period, 24 (25.3%; IC: 17.5%-34.9%) changed or initiated the treatment after DST results: 16/29 MDRTB, 5/21 DR-TB and 3/45 DS-TB cases. Comparing the treatment outcome to DS-TB cases, MDRTB had higher proportions changing or initiating treatment after DST results (p = 0.01) and favorable outcomes (p = 0.07).ConclusionsThis study shows a high rate of empirical treatment and long delay for DST results. Strategies to speed up the detection and early treatment of drug resistant TB should be prioritized.

The results of herbarium investigation of the species belonging to the Sparganium erectum group are here presented. The study was based on the revision of specimens with ripe fruits preserved in the Herbarium Centrale Italicum (FI) of the Natural History Museum of the University of Florence and other local herbaria. The presence of Sparganium oocarpum, not yet recorded in Italy, has been confirmed by the evaluation and measurement of important diagnostic characters (shape of the fruit, length, and width of the fruit, length of the peduncle, length of the style) and by their statistical analysis. Finally, a new identification key for the four species belonging to S. erectum group, based on the Italian herbarium material studied, is proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article is part of a research context that examines the impact of new technologies on psychological practice. We argue that the use of technological mediators in the execution of the psychological profession goes beyond mere modifications to methods and tools, transforming the very nature of the discipline and influencing the associated professional identity. Specifically, our focus is on 'psychological platforms' as emerging work contexts that represent a relatively recent but rapidly growing phenomenon. Beginning with what is present in the literature on the subject of platform classification, this research project is intended to create functional and useful indicators for an analysis of psychological platforms. Based on these indicators, it is possible to reflect on the impact that the various characteristics of psychological platforms have on the psychological profession and psychological professionals themselves. In doing so, we seek to address the following research questions: (a) What are the main characteristics of psychological platforms, (b) which dimensions of the psychological profession are influenced by the use of a given platform in conducting psychological interventions and (c) how does the platformisation of the psychological profession affect the role of the psychologist? Our analysis is based on an in‐depth literature review regarding the platforms, followed by a desk analysis of 44 psychological platforms operating in the Italian context. By adopting this perspective, this article illuminates the dynamics shaping psychological practice in the digital era and suggests guidelines for future research in this continually evolving field. In this study, we carry out a revision of the Italian specimens belonging to Juncus L. subgenus Agathryon Raf. sect. Tenageia Dumort stored in the Herbarium Centrale Italicum of the Museum of Natural History of the University of Florence. By re-examining the 650 specimens present, we find that all the taxa belonging to this section are present in the herbarium. This work also allows us to highlight several novelties concerning species distribution at the regional level, thus confirming the importance of studying herbarium material. On the other hand, the work calls attention to a lack of information at the regional level for some taxa (e.g., J. sphaerocarpus), showing it would be desirable for botanists to continue to send samples to the herbarium to fill these gaps. This study also has implications for some museological issues, allowing the movement of specimens stored under ancient or obsolete names to the correct folders and to update the nomenclatural herbarium database, so contributing to the improvement of the future usefulness of these collections.

Planococcus ficus (Signoret) and Pseudococcus comstocki (Kuwana) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) are economically important pests occurring in vineyards, causing severe economic losses for growers and compromising bunch production. The partial effectiveness of insecticides used in controlling mealybug infestations as well as their high impact on the environment and on human health have led to the research of alternative and sustainable control methods, including biological control. Several natural enemies are reported to be effective against mealybugs, but their activity may be hindered by tending ants. These social insects are known to exhibit a mutualistic relationship with mealybugs, resulting in extremely aggressive behavior against beneficial insects. Consequently, this study explored a method to mitigate ant attendance by means of sugar dispensers in order to improve ecosystem services, as well as decrease mealybug infestation in vineyards. Field trials were carried out in four commercial vineyards of Northern Italy infested by mealybugs, in which Anagyrus vladimiri Triapitsyn (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) and Cryptolaemus montrouzieri Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) were released as biological control agents. Our results showed that sugar dispensers reduced ant activity and mealybug infestation, leading to a significant enhancement of ecosystem services. The technique showed a great potential in boosting biological control against mealybugs in field conditions, though the field application seemed to be labour intensive and needs to be replicated for a multi-year evaluation.
