Formation cycling is a critical process aimed at improving the performance of lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries during subsequent use. Achieving highly reversible Li-metal anodes, which would boost battery energy density, is a formidable challenge. Here, formation cycling and its impact on the subsequent cycling are largely unexplored. Through solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR) spectroscopy experiments, we reveal the critical role of the Li-ion diffusion dynamics between the electrodeposited Li-metal (ED-Li) and the as-formed solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). The most stable cycling performance is realized after formation cycling at a relatively high current density, causing an optimum in Li-ion diffusion over the Li-metal-SEI interface. We can relate this to a specific balance in the SEI chemistry, explaining the lasting impact of formation cycling. Lithium metal with its high theoretical capacity and low negative potential is considered one of the most important candidates to raise the energy density of all-solid-state batteries. However, lithium filament growth and its induced solid electrolyte decomposition pose severe challenges to realize a long cycle life. Here, dendrite growth in solid-state Li metal batteries is alleviated by introducing a high dielectric material, barium titanate, as a filler that removes the electric field gradients that catalyze dendrite formation. In symmetrical Li-metal cells, this results in a very small over-potential of only 48 mV at a relatively high current density of 1 mA cm−2, when cycling a capacity of 2 mA h cm−2 during 1700 h. The high dielectric filler improves the Coulombic efficiency and cycle life of full cells and suppresses electrolyte decomposition as indicated by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. All-solid-state lithium batteries have attracted widespread attention for next-generation energy storage, potentially providing enhanced safety and cycling stability. The performance of such batteries relies on solid electrolyte materials; hence many structures/phases are being investigated with increasing compositional complexity. Among the various solid electrolytes, lithium halides show promising ionic conductivity and cathode compatibility, however, there are no effective guidelines when moving toward complex compositions that go beyond ab-initio modeling. Here, we show that ionic potential, the ratio of charge number and ion radius, can effectively capture the key interactions within halide materials, making it possible to guide the design of the representative crystal structures. This is demonstrated by the preparation of a family of complex layered halides that combine an enhanced conductivity with a favorable isometric morphology, induced by the high configurational entropy. Lithium argyrodite superionic conductors have recently gained significant attention as potential solid electrolytes for all-solid-state batteries because of their high ionic conductivity and ease of processing. Promising aspects of these materials are the ability to introduce halides (Li6-xPS5-xHal1+x, Hal = Cl and Br) into the crystal structure, which can greatly impact the lithium distribution over the wide range of accessible sites and the structural disorder between the S2- and Hal- anion on the Wyckoff 4d site, both of which strongly influence the ionic conductivity. However, the complex relationship among halide substitution, structural disorder, and lithium distribution is not fully understood, impeding optimal material design. In this study, we investigate the effect of bromide substitution on lithium argyrodite (Li6-xPS5-xBr1+x, in the range 0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) and engineer structural disorder by changing the synthesis protocol. We reveal the correlation between the lithium substructure and ionic transport using neutron diffraction, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. We find that a higher ionic conductivity is correlated with a lower average negative charge on the 4d site, located in the center of the Li+ “cage”, as a result of the partial replacement of S2- by Br-. This leads to weaker interactions within the Li+ “cage”, promoting Li-ion diffusivity across the unit cell. We also identify an additional T4 Li+ site, which enables an alternative jump route (T5-T4-T5) with a lower migration energy barrier. The resulting expansion of the Li+ cages and increased connections between cages lead to a maximum ionic conductivity of 8.55 mS/cm for quenched Li5.5PS4.5Br1.5 having the highest degree of structural disorder, RST/Storage of Electrochemical Energy, RID/TS/Instrumenten groep

Genetically encoded voltage indicators, particularly those based on microbial rhodopsins, are gaining traction in neuroscience as fluorescent sensors for imaging voltage dynamics with high-spatiotemporal precision. Here we establish a novel genetically encoded voltage indicator candidate based on the recently discovered subfamily of the microbial rhodopsin clade, termed heliorhodopsins. We discovered that upon excitation at 530 to 560 nm, wildtype heliorhodopsin exhibits near-infrared fluorescence, which is sensitive to membrane voltage. We characterized the fluorescence brightness, photostability, voltage sensitivity, and kinetics of wildtype heliorhodopsin in HEK293T cells and further examined the impact of mutating key residues near the retinal chromophore. The S237A mutation significantly improved the fluorescence response of heliorhodopsin by 76% providing a highly promising starting point for further protein evolution., ImPhys/Brinks group

Voltage imaging using genetically encoded voltage indicators (GEVIs) has taken the field of neuroscience by storm in the past decade. Its ability to create subcellular and network level readouts of electrical dynamics depends critically on the kinetics of the response to voltage of the indicator used. Engineered microbial rhodopsins form a GEVI subclass known for their high voltage sensitivity and fast response kinetics. Here we review the essential aspects of microbial rhodopsin photocycles that are critical to understanding the mechanisms of voltage sensitivity in these proteins and link them to insights from efforts to create faster, brighter and more sensitive microbial rhodopsin-based GEVIs., ImPhys/Brinks group

Chloride-based solid electrolytes are considered interesting candidates for catholytes in all-solid-state batteries due to their high electrochemical stability, which allows the use of high-voltage cathodes without protective coatings. Aliovalent Zr(iv) substitution is a widely applicable strategy to increase the ionic conductivity of Li3M(iii)Cl6 solid electrolytes. In this study, we investigate how Zr(iv) substitution affects the structure and ion conduction in Li3−xIn1−xZrxCl6 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5). Rietveld refinement using both X-ray and neutron diffraction is used to make a structural model based on two sets of scattering contrasts. AC-impedance measurements and solid-state NMR relaxometry measurements at multiple Larmor frequencies are used to study the Li-ion dynamics. In this manner the diffusion mechanism and its correlation with the structure are explored and compared to previous studies, advancing the understanding of these complex and difficult to characterize materials. It is found that the diffusion in Li3InCl6 is most likely anisotropic considering the crystal structure and two distinct jump processes found by solid-state NMR. Zr-substitution improves ionic conductivity by tuning the charge carrier concentration, accompanied by small changes in the crystal structure which affect ion transport on short timescales, likely reducing the anisotropy., RST/Storage of Electrochemical Energy, RID/TS/Instrumenten groep
