Abstract

Summary: Background: Insulin resistance (IR) is an important risk factor for multiple chronic diseases, increasing mortality and reducing life expectancy. The associations between emerging surrogates for IR, triglyceride-glucose index (TyG) and TyG-related indicators, with all-cause mortality and life expectancy in middle-aged and older patients in primary care are unclear. Methods: This study originated from the Polish primary care cohort LIPIDOGRAM2015, including patients aged ≥45 years. Baseline fasting triglycerides and fasting glucose were used to derive TyG. Other TyG-related indicators included TyG-adjusted body mass index (TyG-BMI), TyG-adjusted waist circumference (TyG-WC), TyG-adjusted waist-to-hip, and TyG-adjusted waist-to-height. In this longitudinal analysis, we assessed associations between TyG-related indicators with total all-cause mortality, premature (age at death ≤75 years) all-cause mortality and years of life lost (YLL). Findings: We included 10,688 patients (mean age 61.8 ± 9.3 years; 63.5% female). Cumulative total and premature all-cause mortality were 7.2% and 4.6%, respectively, during 5.7 years (IQR 5.6–5.7) of follow-up. Lowest (Q1) and highest quartile (Q4) of TyG-BMI and TyG-WC were associated with total all-cause mortality (second quartile [Q2]: reference; TyG-BMI: Q1: aHR 1.33, 95% CI 1.07–1.65, Q4: aHR 1.28, 95% CI 1.03–1.58; TyG-WC: Q1: aHR 1.44, 95% CI 1.14–1.82, Q4: aHR 1.29, 95% CI 1.04–1.59), similar results for premature all-cause mortality. Within age 45–80 years, compared with Q2 and third quartile, YLL were 4.49 and 5.46 years for TyG-BMI Q1 and Q4, respectively, 3.24 and 5.31 years for TyG-WC Q1 and Q4, respectively. Interpretation: TyG-BMI and TyG-WC demonstrated a U-shaped association with total and premature all-cause mortality. Low and high levels of TyG-BMI and TyG-WC were associated with reduced life expectancy. Despite the relatively short follow-up period, significant associations were still observed, but longer follow-up studies are required to further explore these relationships. Abstract

Clusters are considered crucial nodes in the ongoing transformation of international value chains (IVCs). Due to technological advancements and external shocks, such as pandemic and political conflicts, value chains (VCs) have been spatially and functionally shortening, and clusters are well suited to address the resulting demand for more diversified and higher value-adding activities in geographical proximity, such as European economic area. However, clusters differ in their positions and capability to advance in IVCs, which induces the research problem of the conditions for cluster upgrading (CU). This monograph aims to develop a theoretical framework for regional CU and empirically verify this framework based on ICT clusters in Europe. It advances the theory of upgrading by linking the VC governance and capability approaches, broadening the empirical evidence on the conditions of CU, and providing policy recommendations. The unique value of the findings from research and practice results in the identification of the determinants for CU and conceptualizes them into new theoretical constructs of the sufficient Framework Conditions and the necessary and sufficient Public-Private Knowledge Governance. Our empirical basis is European clusters in ICT, an industry being one of the Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) for innovation and VC transformation. Abstract

A new type of compact, portable fixed-bed reactor integrated with a heat transfer system was developed for the removal of volatile and flammable air pollutants such as lean methane and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The reactor may operate in catalytic or thermal combustion conditions with the purpose of achieving autothermal processes with the possibility of energy recovery. An excess heat recovery point was designed behind the reactor bed at the place where the gas temperature is the highest to enable its usage. The mathematical model is presented together with a number of simulation calculations performed for the assessment of the developed reactor. The case study in this paper was for catalytic methane oxidation at a temperature of 400 °C, a methane concentration between 0.1% and 2% by weight, a gas flow rate of 1 m3/s STP, and a heat exchange surface for the assumed plate exchanger from 10 to 200 m2. The calculations show that the thickness of the insulation is of little importance for the operation of the equipment, and a sufficient thickness was about 20–50 mm. The optimal area for the considered case is 80–100 m2. It was found that recovery of thermal energy is possible only for higher methane concentrations, above 0.3% by weight. Using an appropriate surface for the exchanger, it is possible to recover even 50% of the combustion enthalpy at a methane concentration of 0.45% by weight. For an exchanger area below 50 m2, the recoverable energy drops rapidly. It was found that the exchanger area is the most important equipment parameter under consideration.

Abstract

Abstract Headache is one of the most common neurological manifestations of COVID-19, but it is unclear whether chronic headache as a symptom of Post-COVID-19 is associated with ongoing CNS damage. We compared cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of markers of CNS damage and inflammation in Post-COVID-19 patients with persistent headache to hospitalized acute COVID-19 patients with neurological symptoms and to non-COVID-19 disease-controls. CSF levels of neurofilament light chain, Ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase L1 and Tau were similar in patients with persistent headache in post-COVID-19 compared to acute COVID-19 patients and all control groups. Levels of glial fibrillary astrocytic protein were lower in patients with persistent headache in post-COVID-19 compared to some control groups of patients with neurological disease. Therefore, our pilot study of CSF markers indicates that persistent post-COVID-19 headache is not a sign of underlying neuronal damage or glial activation.

9. Flow phenomena in laminar flow through streamlined and sharp-edged short monolithic structures

Abstract

Abstract Monolithic structures of catalytic reactors offer low flow resistance, but their drawback is weak heat and mass transport. For transport intensification, innovative streamlined structures were designed, the walls of which are shaped like an airplane wing. Extensive CFD (Computer Fluid Dynamics) studies were performed for the streamlined and—for comparison—classic (sharp-edged) structures, covered flow phenomena, and heat transfer to channel walls. The streamlined structures were made using the SLM (Selective Laser Melting) method to perform heat transfer experiments that gave a satisfactory agreement with the CFD. Heat transfer for streamlined structures was, by CFD, more intensive than for the classical ones. CFD simulations showed a significant reduction of vortices in streamlined structures. The lack of an inlet vortex was demonstrated, for classic structures strongly limiting transfer properties. For the streamlined structures the outlet vortex even intensifies heat transport near the outlet of the channel. The CFD showed the flow patterns for the structures as well as the distribution of transport coefficients within the millimetre-sized channels.

10. Effect of Substrate Roughness on Oxidation Resistance of an Aluminized Ni-Base Superalloy

Abstract

In the present work, it is shown that the surface preparation method used on two Ni-based superalloys prior to aluminizing chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is one of the most important factors determining the oxidation resistance of aluminized Ni-based superalloys. It was found that grit blasting the substrate surface negatively affects the oxidation resistance of the aluminized coatings. For grit blasted and aluminized IN 625, a thicker outer NiAl coating was formed compared to that of IN 738. In contrast, no effect on NiAl coating thickness was found for grit blasted and aluminized IN 738. However, a thicker interdiffusion zone (IDZ) was observed. It was shown that the systems with grit-blasted surfaces reveal worse oxidation resistance during thermal shock tests, namely, a higher mass loss was observed for both grit blasted and aluminized alloys, as compared to ground and aluminized alloys. A possible reason for this effect of remaining alumina particles originating from surface grit blasting on the diffusion processes and stress distribution at the coating/substrate is proposed., Comment: Accepted manuscript Metals 2019

Abstract

The consortium of “The Future is in Applied Artificial Intelligence” Project designed the first competency-based applied artificial intelligence curriculum at the higher-education institution level. The development was based on advanced system research on existing artificial intelligence-related resources and surveying target groups of teachers, information technology students, and employers, which should enhance the performance of implementing artificial intelligence education. A review of applied artificial intelligence was prepared in the form of keyword clustering. The initial data were collected with the help of surveying by identifying job offers, existing artificial intelligence training courses, scientific projects, and real cases. A synthetic analysis of the textual information from the studies was conducted using the word clouds technique. A tensor-based approach was used for the presentation of the competency-based course. The specific numerical requirements for the course in the form of priorities followed from the solution to decision-making problems using the analytic hierarchy process technique. Based on a comprehensive study of surveys, educational experience, scientific projects, and business requirements, and a meta-analysis of the recent references, we specified the criteria for a training course in the form of a tensor-based representation of competencies in relation to content and educational modules.

Abstract Recent studies have indicated that long-term neurological sequelae after COVID-19 are not accompanied by an increase of canonical biomarkers of central nervous system injury in blood, but subgroup stratifications are lacking. This is a particular concern in chronic headache, which can be a leading symptom of Post-COVID diseases associated with neuronal damage such as vasculitis or autoimmune encephalitis. We here compared patients with mild Post-COVID-19 syndrome and persistent headache (persistent Post-COVID-19 headache) lasting longer than 12 weeks after the initial serological diagnosis, to patients with mild and severe COVID-19 and COVID-19-negative controls. Levels of neurofilament light chain and glial fibrillary astrocytic protein, i.e. markers of neuronal damage and reactive astrogliosis, were lower in blood from patients with persistent Post-COVID-19 headache compared to patients with severe COVID-19. Hence, our pilot serological study indicates that long-term Post-COVID-19 headache may not be a sign of underlying neuronal damage or neuroinflammation.

PURPOSE: Financial ecologies (FEs) are place-based governance forms of financial services provision, currently undergoing a transformation through financial technologies (Fintech). The idea of FEs is socially and economically relevant, since they reach toward underserved or excluded market segments and intermediate for territorial development across industries and sectors of private and public entities. At the same time, the FE remains at the early stage of conceptualization and empirical corroborations, in particular regarding how Fintech affects its core elements and related policy implications. In response to the theoretical and practical relevance, and early stage of theorizing the recent Fintech developments in the FE, this article aims to identify how Fintech frame FEs and to propose the resulting conceptual and policy-related implications. METHODOLOGY: To frame the FE concept, we used the methodological lens of construct clarity principles and the concept reconstruction. The research method includes a systematic literature review of 48 publications selected from Scopus and WoS databases. FINDINGS: We have analyzed the concept of FE according to its major elements and related concepts. The FE remains at the intersection of other outcome-oriented ecosystems that focus on territories, but it can also be treated as an independent phenomenon and research object. The idea of FE has been shaped by Fintech-driven developments in all its constituent elements with conceptual and policy consequences formulated as a set of propositions. IMPLICATIONS: The findings are relevant for future theory development and empirical corroborations of the FE. They can also enhance the integration of research communities of practice to accumulate knowledge. Despite standardization brought about by technological innovations, the availability, usefulness, and effects of financial ecosystems depend on the multiscalar spatial contexts that differ in socio-economic and institutional dimensions. Abstract

A new type of compact, portable fixed-bed reactor integrated with a heat transfer system was developed for the removal of volatile and flammable air pollutants such as lean methane and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The reactor may operate in catalytic or thermal combustion conditions with the purpose of achieving autothermal processes with the possibility of energy recovery. An excess heat recovery point was designed behind the reactor bed at the place where the gas temperature is the highest to enable its usage. The mathematical model is presented together with a number of simulation calculations performed for the assessment of the developed reactor. The case study in this paper was for catalytic methane oxidation at a temperature of 400 °C, a methane concentration between 0.1% and 2% by weight, a gas flow rate of 1 m3/s STP, and a heat exchange surface for the assumed plate exchanger from 10 to 200 m2. The calculations show that the thickness of the insulation is of little importance for the operation of the equipment, and a sufficient thickness was about 20–50 mm. The optimal area for the considered case is 80–100 m2. It was found that recovery of thermal energy is possible only for higher methane concentrations, above 0.3% by weight. Using an appropriate surface for the exchanger, it is possible to recover even 50% of the combustion enthalpy at a methane concentration of 0.45% by weight. For an exchanger area below 50 m2, the recoverable energy drops rapidly. It was found that the exchanger area is the most important equipment parameter under consideration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
