Abstract

Diabetic foot ulcers are chronic wounds that affect millions and increase the risk of amputation and mortality, highlighting the critical need for their early detection. Recent demonstrations of wearable sensors enable real-time wound assessment, but they rely on bulky electronics, making them difficult to interface with wounds. Herein, a miniaturized, wireless, battery-free wound monitor that measures lactate in real-time and seamlessly integrates with bandages for conformal attachment to the wound bed is introduced. Lactate is selected due to its multifaceted role in initiating healing. Studies in healthy and diabetic mice reveal distinct lactate profiles for normal and impaired healing wounds. A mathematical model based on the sensor data predicts wound closure rate within the first 3 days post-injury with ≈76% accuracy, which increases to ≈83% when pH is included. These studies underscore the significance of monitoring biomarkers during the inflammation phase, which can offer several benefits, including short-term use of wound monitors and their easy removal, resulting in lower risks of injury and infection at the wound site. Improvements in prediction accuracy can be achieved by designing mathematical models that build on multiple wound parameters such as pro-inflammatory and metabolic markers. Achieving this goal will require designing multi-analyte wound monitors.

Abstract

AimTo investigate whether the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) clinical category cT2b needs to be subclassified by the type and distribution of retinoblastoma (RB) seeding.MethodsMulticentre, international registry-based data were collected from RB centres enrolled between January 2001 and December 2013. 1054 RB eyes with vitreous or subretinal seeds from 18 ophthalmic oncology centres, in 13 countries within six continents were analysed. Local treatment failure was defined as the use of secondary enucleation or external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) and was estimated with the Kaplan-Meier method.ResultsClinical category cT2b included 1054 eyes. Median age at presentation was 16.0 months. Of these, 428 (40.6%) eyes were salvaged, and 430 (40.8%) were treated with primary and 196 (18.6%) with secondary enucleation. Of the 592 eyes that had complete data for globe salvage analysis, the distribution of seeds was focal in 143 (24.2%) and diffuse in 449 (75.8%). The 5-year Kaplan-Meier cumulative globe-salvage (without EBRT) was 78% and 49% for eyes with focal and diffuse RB seeding, respectively. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis confirmed a higher local treatment failure risk with diffuse seeds as compared with focal seeds (hazard rate: 2.8; pConclusionThis international, multicentre, registry-based analysis of RB eyes affirmed that eyes with diffuse intraocular distribution of RB seeds at diagnosis had a higher risk of local treatment failure when compared with focal seeds. Subclassification of AJCC RB category cT2b into focal vs diffuse seeds will improve prognostication for eye salvage.

24. Characterization and evaluation of mountain sweet thorn (Flacourtia montana J. Grah) collections

Abstract

Mountain sweet thorn (Flacourtia montana J. Grah) is an indigenous underutilized fruit of the Western Ghats and other regions of peninsular India. It is a close relative of Governor’s plum. It is a bushy shrub or small tree with spiny trunks and branches which may grow up to 2.5 m in height. The fruits are bright dark red 1-2 cm in diameter, sweet edible, and have the potential for processing into jams and jellies. The presence of thorn is one of the major hurdles for the commercialization of this crop. Thus, seeds of the thorny plants of the Mountain sweet thorn were collected from different locations, and seedlings were planted to identify the suitable line. The plant height ranged from 425 cm (accession 0208) to 710 cm (accession​ ​0202). The plant girth ranged from 34.5 cm to 82 cm. The growth data revealed that all​ ​the accessions are vigorous, fast-growing, and have various levels of thorniness. All the​ ​accessions were found to be spreading type. Significant variability was recorded for leaf​ ​characteristics among the accessions studied. Three major clusters were observed in​ ​cluster analysis for morphological and fruiting characters consisting of 1, 8, and 9 accessions,​ ​respectively. The number of fruits ranged from 0 to 4008. The highest yield (9.46 kg/plant)​ ​was obtained in accession - 0106 followed by accession- 0201 (7.83 kg). The average​ ​fruit weight ranged from 1.51 g to 3.94 g. The highest fruit weight (3.94g) was also recorded​ ​in 0106 followed by 2.84 (0102). The total soluble solids ranged from 10 0 Brix to 15.1 0​ ​Brix. Overall, accession 0201 was found better than others with respect to yield, regular​ ​bearing, and less thorniness.

Abstract

Pollen of five grape cultivars stored in liquid nitrogen ( -196 °C) showed no significant decrease in percentage germination after 64 weeks, whereas pollen stored under laboratory conditions lost viability within 4 weeks. Significant differences in pollen viability were recorded among the cultivars after the storage duration of 64 weeks. Abstract

Befruchtungsfähigkeit von gefrierkonserviertem Pollen der Rebe (Vitis vinifera L.) Durch kontrollierte Bestäubung wurde die Befruchtungsfähigkeit gefrierkonservierter Pollen von Black Champa (BC) und Queen of Vineyards (QVY) nach bis zu 5jähriger Lagerung geprüft. Verschiedene Elternkombinationen unter Einschluß von Selbstungen zeigten keine signifikanten Unterschiede des prozentualen Beerenansatzes; im Vergleich zu den jeweiligen Kontrollen mit Frischpollen war jedoch eine signifikante Abnahme der Befruchtungsfähigkeit zu verzeichnen. Bei allen Kreuzungen unter Verwendung von gefrierkonserviertem Pollen ging die Anzahl der Kerne je Beere zurück; dies weist auf eine mögliche Abnahme der Fertilität hin. Übertragung von gefrierkonserviertem Pollen (QVY) auf die Narben einer abweichenden Sorte (BC) ergab den höchsten prozentualen Beerenansatz bei schwacher Kernausbeute. Bei der in-vitro-Keimung des Pollens nach unterschiedlicher Dauer der Gefrierkonservierung wurde eine hohe Vitalitätsrate - frischem Pollen vergleichbar - registriert; signifikante Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Sorten, der Dauer der Gefrierlagerung oder deren Interaktionen wurden jedoch nicht festgestellt. Abstract

The effect of soil parameters on the distribution of soil fauna was carried out in Mauritius during summer from November 2012 to April 2013. The objective of this study was to determine the distribution of soil fauna of roadside trees at three elevations in Mauritius. Soil fauna were collected utilizing pitfall traps made of plastic cups at three different elevations (Flic en Flac, 5 m; Rose-Hill, 221 m; and Mare aux Vacoas, 569 m). Traps were placed among Casuarina equisetifolia (5m), Dictyosperma album (221 m) and Pinus sylvestris (569 m) trees. A total of 18730 individuals were sampled of which 10740 individuals were sampled at 5 m, 5293 individuals at 221 m and 2697 individuals at 569 m. Abstract

A study was under taken on fruit and seed morphology, seed drying, seed germination and storage behavior in Baccaurea courtallensis, as, this plant is propagated mainly through seeds. Its fruit is a berry consisting of an outer, semi-hard but fleshy rind 2-3 mm thick. The cavity inside the rind is normally occupied by a single, arillate seed, but, two seeds are also seen occasionally. Fresh rind was found to be rich in antioxidants, with 237mg total phenols and 93mg flavonoids per 100 gram fresh weight, but was poor in Vitamin C. A thick, fleshy endosperm is surrounded by the inner seed-coat. The endosperm surrounds the embryo consisting of two papery-thin cotyledons and a minute embryonic axis. Germination was highest (96.7%) when seeds were sown immediately after extraction, with moisture content of about 50%. Reduction in moisture to below 34% showed a drastic decrease in germination. Dried seeds took longer to germinate than did the fresh ones. Seeds with 21% moisture recorded about 60% germination whereas, seeds with 10.2% or 8% moisture failed to germinate, indicating a recalcitrant seed. Temperature in the range of 25-30°C was found to be optimum. Of the two media tested for raising the seedlings, cocopeat medium was superior as, it induced faster growth of the seedlings. Seedling root and shoot were considerably longer, with higher seedling survival rate in cocopeat than in the soil-mix medium. Seedling establishment was poor when planted out of their natural habitat.
