Abstract

Horizontal drift and sporadic-E data taken during IQSY period for Yamagawa (31°12′N, 130°37′E) were analyzed to investigate horizontal drifts under normal E and sporadic E conditions. The Es-layer drift velocities were higher in all seasons compared to E-layer drift velocities. No significant seasonal variation was found in Es-layer drift speeds, the annual average being 77msec−1. In all seasons two eastward peaks around 09 00–11 00 LMT and 17 00–19 00 LMT were evident in E-W component of the Es-layer drifts. The ƒ b E s , data also show two peaks indicating maximum occurrence of Es, around the same times. The apparent correlation between the eastward peaks in Es-layer drifts and ƒ b E s peaks is in agreement with the windshear theory of sporadic-E formation for temperate latitudes. The present study supports the conclusion reached by wright (1968) that the horizontal drift data may detect the direction of neutral winds with reasonable accuracy.

Travelling ionospheric disturbances in the ionized regions of the earth's atmosphere have been investigated using a CW doppler (phase-path) sounding array. A description of wave characteristics such as periods and wavelengths for medium scale TID's is given. An apparent correlation between TID's and occurrence of sporadic E was examined in the light of internal atmospheric gravity wave theory. The results of the present investigation were compared with those of earlier results. It can be concluded from this study that near the solstices, TID's in both hemispheres travel in approximately the same direction, away from the pole. Near the equinoxes, TID's in the Northern Hemisphere travel approximately in the westward direction, while those in the Southern Hemisphere travel eastward.

Abstract

THE effect of magnetic activity on horizontal drifts in the ionosphere has been reported by several investigators1. This communication deals with the effect of magnetic activity on ionospheric drifts at various latitudes with the objective of making apparent the variation in drift speeds with latitude under active magnetic conditions. We have used data on horizontal drifts available from World Data Centers for the IGY period and the drift stations are selected so as to represent a particular range of latitude. The drift speeds and the corresponding K index values are tabulated for all the drift recording stations and corresponding nearest magnetic observatories (Table 1). The tabulated values are then averaged and the average drift speed values for each corresponding K index are plotted as shown in Fig. 1.
