9. Chinese university students' attention level during COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract

The level of attention that university students can pay to their study is one of the important factors influencing their academic achievements, especially during the COVID-19 period, with online courses. The aim of this study is to find out the factors that influence university students' attention level. A questionnaire about students' level of attention during online courses was completed by English-majored students of different professional directions in a Chinese university (n = 611). Comparative tests show that gender difference in the attention level is significant in that female students take COVID-19 more seriously than male students as they cheat less and work harder; female students have a greater level of attention than male students do. Test results also show that grade difference is statistically significant in that freshmen have the greatest level of attention, and junior students are easier to adapt to online education and to use online platform.

Abstract

A core–shell structured Mg(OH)2/PS with enhanced surface lipophilicity was successfully synthesized by a microemulsion template. The core magnesium hydroxide was prepared in a cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB)/isopropanol/cyclohexane/water microemulsion, and the shell polystyrene (PS) was formed in situ by adding styrene monomer into oil phase of the microemulsion. The Mg(OH)2/PS core–shell nanoparticles were characterized by X‐ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetry/differential scanning calorimetry (TG/DSC) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR). The results indicated that the obtained nanoparticles is a core–shell structure and well‐dispersed; the polystyrene shell thicknesses could be controlled in the range of 9.11 to 13.36 nm by simply changing the dosage of styrene monomer. Due to its polymer coating modification and integrated core–shell structure, the Mg(OH)2/PS is with excellent surface lipophilicity and easy to mix with the organic phase. Abstract

Uniform and highly dispersed magnesium hydroxide nanoparticles were synthesized in cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide/cyclohexane/isopropanol/water microemulsion. The effect of different experimental conditions on particle size was investigated and the control mechanism was discussed. The results indicated that the R value (R= [water]/[surfactant]) and the dosage of isopropanol could control the particle size by varying the "water droplet" size in microemulsion; the Mg2+ concentration and the mole ratio of Mg2+ to OH− could fine tune the particle size by varying the solution supersaturation in water droplet. The dosage of isopropanol had the greatest influence on particle size and could control the particle size in the range of 53.66 to 110.06 nm. Our evidences demonstrate that the magnesium hydroxide particle size can be precisely controlled and could realize better application value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
