Heavy metals (HMs) have the characteristics of high toxicity, long residual time, and difficult degradation, which pose a potential threat to aquatic ecosystems. The distribution and migration of HMs in different media can reflect their potential impact on aquatic ecosystem health. In this study, we analyzed the distribution characteristics of seven HMs (Zn, Cu, Cr, Ni, Hg, As, and Pb) in the water and sediment and five groups of organisms (fish, Crustacean, cephalopod, bivalvia, and gastropoda) in the sea ranching area of Haizhou Bay and explored the regularity of HM accumulation from water and sediments to organisms. The results showed that in the water, Zn and Hg had the smallest concentrations in the nearshore area, Cr had the lowest concentrations in the offshore area, and As, Cu, Pb, and Ni had the lowest concentrations in the central area. In the sediment, Hg had the smallest concentrations in the nearshore area and As, Pb, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Zn had the lowest concentrations in the offshore area; the average contents of seven heavy metals all meet the Class I standard of sediments in China. The concentrations of Cu and Zn in crustaceans were significantly higher than those in fishes (p < 0.05), and As showed a higher enrichment effect in cephalopods. Under the influence of feeding habits and habitat environment, the BAF value of benthic crustaceans and bivalvia accumulated HMs from sediments is high, and the BAF value of fish accumulated HMs from water and sediments is low. Overall, the concentration of HMs in water is high, and HMs in sediments are in good condition, crustaceans and bivalviaa have a strong ability to accumulate HMs from water and sediments, while fish are weak. Ecological connectivity, as a research method related to spatial ecology and conservation biology, has attracted increasing attention from researchers at home and abroad in recent years. Habitat connectivity, as a key link in ecological connectivity, is of great significance to promote coastal ecological restoration and protection. However, there has been less systematic research about habitat connectivity due to lack of corresponding theories and practices. Therefore, this paper discusses habitat connectivity from three aspects: (1) the concept of habitat connectivity is introduced and clarified; (2) the application of connectivity in artificial habitat and adjacent waters and its relationship with biodiversity conservation are reviewed and illustrated with examples; and (3) the future development trends of this research direction are summarized and prospected in order to provide a scientific basis and useful reference for the related work of coastal restoration projects in China. Generally, this paper argues that an increase in human behaviour irreversibly destroys the connectivity between marine habitats and threatens the spatial and temporal scales of biodiversity and ecosystem services. Therefore, the theoretical research results and practical experience of ecological connectivity should be fully applied to marine ecosystems, and the restoration of degraded ecosystems should be encouraged and supported in ways that promote natural recovery. In recent years, the frequent occurrence of most human activities has seriously affected the structure and functioning of coastal ecosystems. The asymmetric relationship between the left and right otoliths of fish is often used to test the difference in fluctuating asymmetry (FA) reflected by the square of the coefficient of asymmetric variation (CV2a), which can be regarded as an important step in the study of marine environmental pressure and implementation of offshore ecological restoration. In this study, the authors tested the bilateral FA of Collichthys lucidus in the coastal waters of Haizhou Bay, Jiangsu, and Xiangshan Bay, Zhejiang, China, using four sagittal otolith characters (length, width, perimeter and area) as biological characters. The results showed that the value of CV2a in otolith width (more sensitive to environmental pressure) of C. lucidus in Xiangshan Bay was higher than that in Haizhou Bay, indicating that the environmental pressure on Xiangshan Bay was relatively high. The authors did not find any significant differences in the FA of otoliths between different body sizes of C. lucidus, which may be related to the short‐distance migration in different regions and the dietary shifts in the life history of this species.
