1. Identification of Nonlinear Dynamic Panels under Partial Stationarity

Abstract

This paper studies identification for a wide range of nonlinear panel data models, including binary choice, ordered response, and other types of limited dependent variable models. Our approach accommodates dynamic models with any number of lagged dependent variables as well as other types of (potentially contemporary) endogeneity. Our identification strategy relies on a partial stationarity condition, which not only allows for an unknown distribution of errors but also for temporal dependencies in errors. We derive partial identification results under flexible model specifications and provide additional support conditions for point identification. We demonstrate the robust finite-sample performance of our approach using Monte Carlo simulations, and apply the approach to analyze the empirical application of income categories using various ordered choice models.

2. IV Regressions without Exclusion Restrictions

Abstract

We study identification and estimation of endogenous linear and nonlinear regression models without excluded instrumental variables, based on the standard mean independence condition and a nonlinear relevance condition. Based on the identification results, we propose two semiparametric estimators as well as a discretization-based estimator that does not require any nonparametric regressions. We establish their asymptotic normality and demonstrate via simulations their robust finite-sample performances with respect to exclusion restrictions violations and endogeneity. Our approach is applied to study the returns to education, and to test the direct effects of college proximity indicators as well as family background variables on the outcome.

3. Dynamic Heterogeneous Distribution Regression Panel Models, with an Application to Labor Income Processes

Abstract

We consider the estimation of a dynamic distribution regression panel data model with heterogeneous coefficients across units. The objects of primary interest are specific functionals of these coefficients. These include predicted actual and stationary distributions of the outcome variable and quantile treatment effects. Coefficients and their functionals are estimated via fixed effect methods. We investigate how these functionals vary in response to changes in initial conditions or covariate values. We also identify a uniformity issue related to the robustness of inference to the unknown degree of heterogeneity, and propose a cross-sectional bootstrap method for uniformly valid inference on function-valued objects. Employing PSID annual labor income data we illustrate some important empirical issues we can address. We first quantify the impact of a negative labor income shock on the distribution of future labor income. We also examine the impact on the distribution of labor income from increasing the education level of a chosen group of workers. Finally, we demonstrate the existence of heterogeneity in income mobility, and how this leads to substantial variation in individuals' incidences to be trapped in poverty. We also provide simulation evidence confirming that our procedures work well.

4. A Partial Order on Preference Profiles

Abstract

We propose a theoretical framework under which preference profiles can be meaningfully compared. Specifically, given a finite set of feasible allocations and a preference profile, we first define a ranking vector of an allocation as the vector of all individuals' rankings of this allocation. We then define a partial order on preference profiles and write "$P \geq P^{'}$", if there exists an onto mapping $\psi$ from the Pareto frontier of $P^{'}$ onto the Pareto frontier of $P$, such that the ranking vector of any Pareto efficient allocation $x$ under $P^{'}$ is weakly dominated by the ranking vector of the image allocation $\psi(x)$ under $P$. We provide a characterization of the maximal and minimal elements under the partial order. In particular, we illustrate how an individualistic form of social preferences can be maximal in a specific setting. We also discuss how the framework can be further generalized to incorporate additional economic ingredients.

7. Using Monotonicity Restrictions to Identify Models with Partially Latent Covariates

Abstract

This paper develops a new method for identifying econometric models with partially latent covariates. Such data structures arise in industrial organization and labor economics settings where data are collected using an input-based sampling strategy, e.g., if the sampling unit is one of multiple labor input factors. We show that the latent covariates can be nonparametrically identified, if they are functions of a common shock satisfying some plausible monotonicity assumptions. With the latent covariates identified, semiparametric estimation of the outcome equation proceeds within a standard IV framework that accounts for the endogeneity of the covariates. We illustrate the usefulness of our method using a new application that focuses on the production functions of pharmacies. We find that differences in technology between chains and independent pharmacies may partially explain the observed transformation of the industry structure.

8. Two-Stage Maximum Score Estimator

Abstract

This paper considers the asymptotic theory of a semiparametric M-estimator that is generally applicable to models that satisfy a monotonicity condition in one or several parametric indexes. We call the estimator two-stage maximum score (TSMS) estimator since our estimator involves a first-stage nonparametric regression when applied to the binary choice model of Manski (1975, 1985). We characterize the asymptotic distribution of the TSMS estimator, which features phase transitions depending on the dimension and thus the convergence rate of the first-stage estimation. Effectively, the first-stage nonparametric estimator serves as an imperfect smoothing function on a non-smooth criterion function, leading to the pivotality of the first-stage estimation error with respect to the second-stage convergence rate and asymptotic distribution

9. Robust Semiparametric Estimation in Panel Multinomial Choice Models

Abstract

This paper proposes a robust method for semiparametric identification and estimation in panel multinomial choice models, where we allow for infinite-dimensional fixed effects that enter into consumer utilities in an additively nonseparable way, thus incorporating rich forms of unobserved heterogeneity. Our identification strategy exploits multivariate monotonicity in parametric indexes, and uses the logical contraposition of an intertemporal inequality on choice probabilities to obtain identifying restrictions. We provide a consistent estimation procedure, and demonstrate the practical advantages of our method with simulations and an empirical illustration with the Nielsen data.

10. How Flexible is that Functional Form? Quantifying the Restrictiveness of Theories

Abstract

We propose a restrictiveness measure for economic models based on how well they fit synthetic data from a pre-defined class. This measure, together with a measure for how well the model fits real data, outlines a Pareto frontier, where models that rule out more regularities, yet capture the regularities that are present in real data, are preferred. To illustrate our approach, we evaluate the restrictiveness of popular models in two laboratory settings -- certainty equivalents and initial play -- and in one field setting -- takeup of microfinance in Indian villages. The restrictiveness measure reveals new insights about each of the models, including that some economic models with only a few parameters are very flexible.

11. Logical Differencing in Dyadic Network Formation Models with Nontransferable Utilities

Abstract

This paper considers a semiparametric model of dyadic network formation under nontransferable utilities (NTU). NTU arises frequently in real-world social interactions that require bilateral consent, but by its nature induces additive non-separability. We show how unobserved individual heterogeneity in our model can be canceled out without additive separability, using a novel method we call logical differencing. The key idea is to construct events involving the intersection of two mutually exclusive restrictions on the unobserved heterogeneity, based on multivariate monotonicity. We provide a consistent estimator and analyze its performance via simulation, and apply our method to the Nyakatoke risk-sharing networks.

15. Nonparametric Identification in Index Models of Link Formation

Abstract

We consider an index model of dyadic link formation with a homophily effect index and a degree heterogeneity index. We provide nonparametric identification results in a single large network setting for the potentially nonparametric homophily effect function, the realizations of unobserved individual fixed effects and the unknown distribution of idiosyncratic pairwise shocks, up to normalization, for each possible true value of the unknown parameters. We propose a novel form of scale normalization on an arbitrary interquantile range, which is not only theoretically robust but also proves particularly convenient for the identification analysis, as quantiles provide direct linkages between the observable conditional probabilities and the unknown index values. We then use an inductive "in-fill and out-expansion" algorithm to establish our main results, and consider extensions to more general settings that allow nonseparable dependence between homophily and degree heterogeneity, as well as certain extents of network sparsity and weaker assumptions on the support of unobserved heterogeneity. As a byproduct, we also propose a concept called "modeling equivalence" as a refinement of "observational equivalence", and use it to provide a formal discussion about normalization, identification and their interplay with counterfactuals.

Abstract

This paper characterizes the minimax linear estimator of the value of an unknown function at a boundary point of its domain in a Gaussian white noise model under the restriction that the first-order derivative of the unknown function is Lipschitz continuous (the second-order H\"{o}lder class). The result is then applied to construct the minimax optimal estimator for the regression discontinuity design model, where the parameter of interest involves function values at boundary points.

Abstract

We show that endogenous linear regression models can be identified without excluded instrumental variables, based on the standard mean independence condition and a no-multicollinearity condition on the conditional expectations of endogenous covariates given the included exogenous covariates. Based on the identification results, we propose two semiparametric estimators as well as a discretization-based estimator that does not require any nonparametric regressions. We establish their asymptotic normality, provide corresponding variance estimators, and demonstrate via simulations the good finite-sample performances of our proposed estimation and inference procedures. In particular, we find that the discretization-based estimator performs remarkably well in finite samples, while being very simple and fast to compute.

Abstract

We propose a new way to quantify the restrictiveness of an economic model, based on how well the model fits simulated, hypothetical data sets. The data sets are drawn at random from a distribution that satisfies some application dependent content restrictions (such as that people prefer more money to less). Models that can fit almost all hypothetical data well are not restrictive. To illustrate our approach, we evaluate the restrictiveness of popular behavioral models in two experimental settings���certainty equivalents and initial play���and explain how restrictiveness reveals new insights about each of the models.

Abstract

Background There are limited renal replacement therapy (RRT) prediction models with good performance in the general population. We developed a model that includes lifestyle factors to improve predictive ability for RRT in the population at large. Methods We used data collected between 1996 and 2017 from a medical screening in a cohort comprising 442 714 participants aged 20 years or over. After a median follow-up of 13 years, we identified 2212 individuals with end-stage renal disease (RRT, n : 2091; kidney transplantation, n : 121). We built three models for comparison: model 1: basic model, Kidney Failure Risk Equation with four variables (age, sex, estimated glomerular filtration rate and proteinuria); model 2: basic model + medical history + lifestyle risk factors; and model 3: model 2 + all significant clinical variables. We used the Cox proportional hazards model to construct a points-based model and applied the C statistic. Results Adding lifestyle factors to the basic model, the C statistic improved in model 2 from 0.91 to 0.94 (95% confidence interval: 0.94, 0.95). Model 3 showed even better C statistic value i.e. 0.95 (0.95, 0.96). With a cut-off score of 33, model 3 identified 3% of individuals with RRT risk in 10 years. This model detected over half of individuals progressing to RRT, which was higher than the sensitivity of cohort participants with stage 3 or higher chronic kidney disease (0.53 versus 0.48). Conclusions Our prediction model including medical history and lifestyle factors improved the predictive ability for end-stage renal disease in the general population in addition to chronic kidney disease population. Abstract

This article considers the effect of contracting limitations in risk-sharing networks, arising for example from observability, verifiability, complexity, or cultural constraints. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for Pareto efficiency under these constraints in a general setting, and we provide an explicit characterization of Pareto efficient bilateral transfer profiles under CARA utility and normally distributed endowments. Our model predicts that network centrality is positively correlated with consumption volatility, as more central agents become quasi-insurance providers to more peripheral agents. The proposed framework has important implications for the empirical specification of risk-sharing tests, allowing for local risk-sharing groups that overlap within the village network.
