Abstract

Environmental pollution is escalating due to rapid global development that often prioritizes human needs over planetary health. Despite global efforts to mitigate legacy pollutants, the continuous introduction of new substances remains a major threat to both people and the planet. In response, global initiatives are focusing on risk assessment and regulation of emerging contaminants, as demonstrated by the ongoing efforts to establish the UNs Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste, and Pollution Prevention. This review identifies the sources and impacts of emerging contaminants on planetary health, emphasizing the importance of adopting a One Health approach. Strategies for monitoring and addressing these pollutants are discussed, underscoring the need for robust and socially equitable environmental policies at both regional and international levels. Urgent actions are needed to transition toward sustainable pollution management practices to safeguard our planet for future generations.

Abstract

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) represents a major constituent of tropospheric fine particulate matter, with profound implications for human health and climate. However, the chemical mechanisms leading to SOA formation remain uncertain, and atmospheric models consistently underpredict the global SOA budget. Small α-dicarbonyls, such as methylglyoxal, are ubiquitous in the atmosphere because of their significant production from photooxidation of aromatic hydrocarbons from traffic and industrial sources as well as from biogenic isoprene. Current experimental and theoretical results on the roles of methylglyoxal in SOA formation are conflicting. Using quantum chemical calculations, we show cationic oligomerization of methylglyoxal in aqueous media. Initial protonation and hydration of methylglyoxal lead to formation of diols/tetrol, and subsequent protonation and dehydration of diols/tetrol yield carbenium ions, which represent the key intermediates for formation and propagation of oligomerization. On the other hand, our results reveal that the previously proposed oligomerization via hydration for methylglyoxal is kinetically and thermodynamically implausible. The carbenium ion-mediated mechanism occurs barrierlessly on weakly acidic aerosols and cloud/fog droplets and likely provides a key pathway for SOA formation from biogenic and anthropogenic emissions.

46. Nanoporous Thulium(III)–Organic Framework for High Catalytic Performance on the CO2-Epoxide Cycloaddition

Abstract

Considering that the greenhouse effect is the most concerning environmental issue globally, selective capture and resource utilization of CO2have attracted widespread attention. Herein, we report a highly robust thulium(III)–organic framework of {[Tm2(μ2-OH)(CPPDDA)(H2O)2]·3DMF·2H2O}n(NUC-108), which is obtained from the exquisite combination of undocumented multifunctional clusters of [Tm4(μ2-OH)2(COO)10(H2O)4] and organic ligands of 4,4′-(4-(4-carboxyphenyl)pyridine-2,6-diyl)diisophthalic acid (H5CPPDDA). NUC-108possesses the following unique merits: (i) the undocumented functional tetranuclear rare-earth clusters of [Tm4(μ2-OH)2(COO)10(H2O)4] serve as the nodes, in which Tm3+ions can be activated as Lewis acid sites and μ2-OH anions are Lewis base sites; (ii) the high-porosity zeolite architecture contains three kinds of channels: 12.29 × 9.74 Å2and 8.92 × 4.97 Å2along the baxis and 12.76 × 8.95 Å2along the caxis; (iii) uncoordinated pyridine moieties as Lewis base sites further endow the host framework with functionality; and (iv) resistance to weak acidic and alkaline aqueous solutions as well as various organic solvents. Notably, NUC-108acan effectively separate CO2from a binary CO2/CH4mixture with high adsorption selectivity, which should be due to the enough Lewis basic sites of pyridine groups and μ2-OH moieties. Furthermore, under mild conditions and without any organic solvent, NUC-108acan also be used as an effective recoverable catalyst to facilitate the cycloaddition of CO2with epoxides with the aid of tetrabutylammonium bromide. Hence, these findings are beneficial for guiding the development of highly stable and active catalysts for carbon utilization.

Abstract

The warming radiative forcing effect (RFE) derived from atmospheric amines attracts a lot of attention because of their contribution to brown carbon. Herein, the enhanced influence of amines (methyl-, dimethyl-, and trimethylamine) on cooling RFE of mineral particles is first confirmed at visible wavelengths. Present results state heterogeneous uptake and oxidation reactions of atmospheric amines are feasible on mineral particles under clean and polluted conditions, which are proven by related thermodynamics and kinetics data obtained using combined classical molecular dynamics and density function theory methods. Based on mineral particles, simple forcing efficiency (SFE) results explain that amine uptake induces at least 11.8 %–29.5 % enhancement on cooling RFE of amine–mineral particles at visible wavelengths. After amine heterogeneous oxidation, oxidized amine–mineral particle cooling RFEs are furthermore enhanced due to increased oxygen contents. Moreover, oxidized amine–mineral particles under clean conditions show 27.1 %–47.1 % SFE increments at 400–600 nm, which is at least 11.3 % higher than that of itself under polluted conditions, due to high-oxygen-content product formation through amine autoxidation. Our results suggest cooling RFE derived from atmospheric amines can be equally important to their warming RFE on the atmosphere. It is necessary to update the heterogeneous oxidation mechanism and kinetics data of amines in atmospheric models in order to accurately evaluate the whole RFE caused by amines on the atmosphere.
