Search

Raman spectroscopy is a valuable characterization tool for two dimensional (2D) materials. Although some of these materials are topological, the Raman signatures of electronic band topology have remained largely unexplored. On a theoretical study of 2D massive Dirac fermions, we report a selection rule and a peculiar phase difference between the Raman tensor elements, which are sensitive to the sign of the Dirac mass. The miniaturization of integrated circuits is facing an obstruction due to the escalating electrical resistivity of conventional copper interconnects. The underlying reason for this problem was unveiled by Fuchs and Sondheimer, who showed that thinner wires are more resistive because current-carrying electrons encounter the rough surfaces of the wire more frequently therein. Here, we present a generalization of the Fuchs-Sondheimer theory to Dirac and Weyl materials, which are candidates for next-generation interconnects. In cosmology, the axion is a hypothetical particle that is currently considered as candidate for dark matter. In condensed matter, a counterpart of the axion (the "axion quasiparticle") has been predicted to emerge in magnetoelectric insulators with fluctuating magnetic order and in charge-ordered Weyl semimetals. To date, both the cosmological and condensed-matter axions remain experimentally elusive or unconfirmed. Here, we show theoretically that ordinary lattice vibrations can form an axion quasiparticle in Dirac insulators with broken time- and space-inversion symmetries, even in the absence of magnetic fluctuations. The physical manifestation of the phononic axion is a magnetic-field-induced phonon effective charge, which can be probed in optical spectroscopy. In magnetic memories, the state of a ferromagnet is encoded in the orientation of its magnetization. The energy of the system is minimized when the magnetization is parallel or antiparallel to a preferred (easy) axis. These two stable directions define the logical bit. Under an external perturbation, the direction of magnetization can be controllably reversed and thus the bit flipped. Here, we theoretically design a topological analogue of the magnetic bit in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH)-Holstein model, where we show that a transient external perturbation can lead to a permanent change in the electronic band topology., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

Recently, it has been predicted that the Berry curvature of electrons can produce an angular momentum for phonons. In systems with time-reversal symmetry, the direction of the phonon angular momentum is locked to the phonon wave vector. Accordingly, this phenomenon has received the name of ``phonon helicity". Here, we present a theory to unveil the signatures of such phonon helicity using Raman scattering. We show that the intensity of Raman scattering for circularly polarized light in BaMnSb$_2$ (a prototypical nonchiral Dirac insulator) changes under a reversal of the phonon wave vector, and that the phonon helicity can be inferred from that change. Nontrivial band topologies in semimetals lead to robust surface states that can contribute dominantly to the total conduction. This may result in reduced resistivity with decreasing feature size contrary to conventional metals, which may highly impact the semiconductor industry. Here we study the resistivity scaling of a representative topological semimetal CoSi using realistic band structures and Green's function methods. We show that there exists a critical thickness d_c dividing different scaling trends. Above d_c, when the defect density is low such that surface conduction dominates, resistivity reduces with decreasing thickness; when the defect density is high such that bulk conduction dominates, resistivity increases in as conventional metals. Below d_c, the persistent remnants of the surface states give rise to decreasing resistivity down to the ultrathin limit, unlike in topological insulators. The observed CoSi scaling can apply to broad classes of topological semimetals, providing guidelines for materials screening and engineering. Our study shows that topological semimetals bear the potential of overcoming the resistivity scaling challenges in back-end-of-line interconnect applications.

Van Roosbroeck's equations constitute a versatile tool to determine the dynamics of electrons under time- and space-dependent perturbations. Extensively utilized in ordinary semiconductors, their potential to model devices made from topological materials remains untapped. Here, we adapt van Roosbroeck's equations to theoretically study the bulk response of a Weyl semimetal to an ultrafast and spatially localized light pulse in the presence of a quantizing magnetic field. We predict a transient oscillatory photovoltage that originates from the chiral anomaly. The oscillations take place at the plasma frequency (THz range) and are damped by intervalley scattering and dielectric relaxation. We assess the viability of topological semimetals for application in advanced interconnect technology, where conductor size is on the order of a few nanometers and grain boundaries are expected to be prevalent. We investigate the electron transport properties and grain boundary scattering in thin films of the topological semimetals CoSi and CoGe using first-principles calculations combined with the Non-Equilibrium Green's Function (NEGF) technique. Unlike conventional interconnect metals like Cu and Al, we find that CoSi and CoGe conduct primarily through topologically-protected surface states in thin film structures even in the presence of grain boundaries. The area-normalized resistance decreases with decreasing film thickness for CoSi and CoGe thin films both with and without grain boundaries; a trend opposite to that of the conventional metals Cu and Al. The surface-dominated transport mechanisms in thin films of topological semimetals with grain boundaries demonstrates a fundamentally new paradigm of the classical resistivity size-effect, and suggests that these materials may be promising candidates for applications as nano-interconnects where high electrical resistivity acts as a major bottleneck limiting semiconductor device performance., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures. The behavior of three-dimensional (3D) semimetals under strong magnetic fields is a topic of recurring interest in condensed matter physics. Recently, the advent of Weyl and Dirac semimetals has brought about an interesting platform for potentially uncovering phases of matter that combine nontrivial band topology and interactions. While electronic instabilities of such semimetals at strong magnetic fields have been explored theoretically and experimentally, the role of electron-phonon interactions therein has been largely neglected. In this paper, we study the interplay of electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions in a minimal two-node model of Weyl semimetal. Using a Kadanoff-Wilson renormalization group approach, we analyze lattice (Peierls) instabilities emerging from chiral and nonchiral Landau levels as a function of the magnetic field. We consider both the adiabatic and the nonadiabatic phonon regimes, in the presence or in the absence of improper symmetries that relate Weyl nodes of opposite chirality. We find that (i) the Cooper channel, often neglected in recent studies, can prevent purely electronic instabilities while enabling lattice instabilities that are not Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-like; (ii) breaking the improper symmetry that relates the two Weyl nodes suppresses the Cooper channel, thereby increasing the critical temperature for the lattice instability; (iii) in the adiabatic phonon regime, lattice instabilities can preempt purely electronic instabilities; (iv) pseudoscalar phonons are more prone to undergo a Peierls instability than scalar phonons. In two-dimensional insulators with time-reversal (TR) symmetry, a nonzero local Berry curvature of low-energy massive Dirac fermions can give rise to nontrivial spin and charge responses, even though the integral of the Berry curvature over all occupied states is zero. In this work, we present a new effect induced by the electronic Berry curvature. By studying electron-phonon interactions in BaMnSb$_2$, a prototype two-dimensional Dirac material possessing two TR-related massive Dirac cones, we find that the nonzero local Berry curvature of electrons can induce a phonon angular momentum. The direction of this phonon angular momentum is locked to the phonon propagation direction, and thus we refer it as "phonon helicity", in a way that is reminiscent of electron helicity in spin-orbit-coupled electronic systems. Amplifiers based on Josephson junctions allow for a fast and noninvasive readout of superconducting qubits. Motivated by the ongoing progress toward the realization of fault-tolerant qubits based on Majorana bound states, we investigate the topological counterpart of the Josephson bifurcation amplifier. One striking property of the Landau level spectrum of a Weyl semimetal (WSM) is the existence of a chiral Landau level, in which the electrons propagate unidirectionally along the magnetic field. This linearly dispersive level influences the optical properties of WSMs. For example, it was recently shown that a complete optical valley polarization is achievable in a time-reversal symmetric Weyl semimetal placed in a magnetic field\cite% {Bertrand2019}. This effect originates from inter-Landau level transitions involving the chiral Landau level and requires a tilt of the Weyl cones. In this paper, we show how the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) is modified in a WSM\ with tilted Weyl cones in comparison with its behavior in a normal metal and how a valley polarization can be detected using MOKE. We study both the Faraday (longitudinal) and Voigt (transverse) configurations for light incident on a semi-infinite WSM surface with no Fermi arcs. We use a minimal model of a WSM with four tilted Weyl nodes related by mirror and time-reversal symmetry. In the Voigt configuration, a large peak of the Kerr angle occurs at the plasmon frequency. We show that the blueshift in frequency of this peak with increasing magnetic field is a signature of the chiral anomaly in the MOKE., Comment: 16 pages with 11 PDF figures

The phonon magnetochiral effect consists of a nonreciprocity in the velocity or attenuation of acoustic waves when they propagate parallel and antiparallel to an external magnetic field. The first experimental observation of this effect has been reported recently in a chiral magnet and ascribed to the hybridization between acoustic phonons and chiral magnons. Here, we predict a potentially measurable phonon magnetochiral effect of electronic origin in chiral Weyl semimetals. We present a theoretical study of the interplay between topological p-wave superconductivity, orbital magnetic fields and quantum Hall phases in coupled wire systems. First, we calculate the phase diagram and physical observables of a fermionic ladder made of two coupled Kitaev chains, and discuss the presence of two and four Majorana zero modes. Second, we analyze hybrid systems consisting of a Kitaev chain coupled to a Luttinger liquid. By tuning the magnetic field and the carrier density, we identify quantum Hall and charge density wave phases, as well as regimes in which superconductivity is induced in the second chain by proximity effect. Finally, we consider two-dimensional systems made of weakly coupled ladders. There, we engineer a $p+ip$ superconductor and describe a generalization of the $\nu=1/2$ fractional quantum Hall phase. We present a theory of an optically induced valley polarization in an interacting, time-reversal symmetric Weyl semimetal placed under strong magnetic fields. Because the application of a magnetic field reduces the symmetry of the crystal, the optical absorption intensity differs at Weyl nodes that were equivalent by symmetry at zero field. At strong magnetic field, the difference in the absorption intensity reaches 100% for a sizeable frequency interval of the incident light. This complete valley polarization originates from interband transitions involving the chiral Landau level, and can be controlled by changing the directions of the magnetic field and the light propagation. We identify the splitting of $0\to 1$ or $-1\to 0$ inter Landau level transitions as an observable signature of the complete valley polarization, and discuss its manifestation in the TaAs family of materials., Comment: 19 pages, 16 figures

Solid-state experimental realizations of Majorana bound states are based on materials with strong intrinsic spin-orbit interactions. In this paper, we explore an alternative approach where spin-orbit coupling is induced artificially through a nonuniform magnetic field that originates from an array of micromagnets. Using a recently developed optimization algorithm, we find suitable magnet geometries for the emergence of topological superconductivity in wires without intrinsic spin-orbit coupling. We confirm the robustness of Majorana bound states against disorder and periodic potentials whose amplitudes do not exceed the Zeeman energy. Weyl semimetals display unusual electronic transport properties when placed under magnetic fields. Here, we investigate how magnetic fields alter the dynamics of long wavelength lattice vibrations in these materials. To that end, we develop a theory for the phonon dispersion, which incorporates contributions from chiral and nonchiral Landau levels, electron-phonon interactions, electron-electron interactions, and disorder. We predict (i) a magnetic-field-induced hybridization between optical phonons and plasmons, (ii) avoided crossings between pseudoscalar optical phonons and electronic excitations originating from nonchiral Landau levels, (iii) a sharp dependence of the sound velocity on the relative angle between the sound propagation and the magnetic field. We present a many-body exact diagonalization study of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ and $\mathbb{Z}_4$ Josephson effects in circuit quantum electrodynamics architectures. Numerical simulations are conducted on Kitaev chain Josephson junctions hosting nearest-neighbor Coulomb interactions. The low-energy effective theory of highly transparent Kitaev chain junctions is shown to be identical to that of junctions created at the edge of a quantum spin-Hall insulator. By capacitively coupling the interacting junction to a microwave resonator, we predict signatures of the fractional Josephson effects on the cavity frequency and on time-resolved reflectivity measurements., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

The Dirac surface states of topological insulators offer a unique possibility for creating spin polarized charge currents due to the spin-momentum locking. Here we demonstrate that the control over the bulk and surface contribution is crucial to maximize the charge-to-spin conversion efficiency. We observe an enhancement of the spin signal due to surface-dominated spin polarization while freezing out the bulk conductivity in semiconducting Bi1.5Sb0.5Te1.7Se1.3 below 100K. Detailed measurements up to room temperature exhibit a strong reduction of the magnetoresistance signal between 2 and 100K, which we attribute to the thermal excitation of bulk carriers and to the electron-phonon coupling in the surface states. The presence and dominance of this effect up to room temperature is promising for spintronic science and technology.

Recent progress toward the fabrication of Majorana-based qubits has sparked the need for systematic approaches to optimize experimentally relevant parameters for the realization of robust Majorana bound states. Here, we introduce an efficient numerical method for the real-space optimization of tunable parameters, such as electrostatic potential profiles and magnetic field textures, in Majorana wires. Combining ideas from quantum control and quantum transport, our algorithm, applicable to any noninteracting tight-binding model, operates on a largely unexplored parameter space and opens new routes for Majorana bound states with enhanced robustness. Recent theoretical work has established the presence of hidden spin and orbital textures in non-magnetic materials with inversion symmetry. Here, we propose that these textures can be detected by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements carried out in the presence of an electric field. In crystals with hidden polarizations, a uniform electric field produces a staggered magnetic field that points to opposite directions at atomic sites related by spatial inversion. As a result, the NMR resonance peak corresponding to inversion partner nuclei is split into two peaks. The magnitude of the splitting is proportional to the electric field and depends on the orientation of the electric field with respect to the crystallographic axes and the external magnetic field. As a case study, we present a theory of electric-field-induced splitting of NMR peaks for $^{77}$Se, $^{125}$Te and $^{209}$Bi in Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and Bi$_2$Te$_3$. In conducting samples with current densities of $\simeq 10^6\, {\rm A/cm}^2$, the splitting for Bi can reach $100\, {\rm kHz}$, which is comparable to or larger than the intrinsic width of the NMR lines. In order to observe the effect experimentally, the peak splitting must also exceed the linewidth produced by the Oersted field. In Bi$_2$Se$_3$, this requires narrow wires of radius $\lesssim 1\, \mu{\rm m}$. We also discuss other potentially more promising candidate materials, such as SrRuO$_3$ and BaIr$_2$Ge$_2$, whose crystal symmetry enables strategies to suppress the linewidth produced by the Oersted field., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

It has been recently predicted that the interplay between Coulomb interactions and Berry curvature can produce interesting optical phenomena in topologically nontrivial two-dimensional insulators. Here, we present a theory of the optical absorption for three-dimensional, hole-doped Weyl semimetals. We find that the Berry curvature, Coulomb interactions and the nonlinearity in the single-particle energy spectrum can together enable a light-induced valley polarization. Discovered in high-energy physics, the chiral anomaly has recently made way to materials science by virtue of Weyl semimetals (WSM). Thus far, the main efforts to probe the chiral anomaly in WSM have concentrated on electronic phenomena. Here, we show that the chiral anomaly can have a large impact in the $A_1$ phonons of enantiomorphic WSM. In these materials, the chiral anomaly produces an unusual magnetic-field-induced resonance in the effective phonon charge, which in turn leads to anomalies in the phonon dispersion, optical reflectivity, and the Raman scattering., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure

Motivated by recent nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments, we present a microscopic sp3 tight-binding model calculation of the NMR shifts in bulk Bi2Se3, and Bi2Te3. We compute the contact, dipolar, orbital and core polarization contributions to the carrier-density-dependent part of the NMR shifts in Bi209, Te125 and Se77. The spin-orbit coupling and the layered crystal structure result in a contact Knight shift with strong uniaxial anisotropy. Likewise, because of spin-orbit coupling, dipolar interactions make a significant contribution to the isotropic part of the NMR shift. The contact interaction dominates the isotropic Knight shift in Bi209 NMR, even though the electronic states at the Fermi level have a rather weak s-orbital character. In contrast, the contribution from the contact hyperfine interaction to the NMR shift of Se77 and Te125 is weak compared to the dipolar and orbital shifts therein. In all cases, the orbital shift is at least comparable to the contact and dipolar shifts, while the shift due to core polarization is subdominant (except for Te nuclei located at the inversion centers). By artificially varying the strength of spin-orbit coupling, we evaluate the evolution of the NMR shift across a band inversion but find no clear signature of the topological transition., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures

Topological insulators (TIs) constitute a new class of materials with an energy gap in the bulk and peculiar metallic states on the surface. To date, most experiments have focused on probing the surface electronic structure of these materials. Here, we report on new and potentially interesting features resulting from the bulk electronic structure. Our findings are based on a comprehensive nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study of $^{77}$Se on Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and Cu$_{0.15}$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ single crystals. First, we find two resonance lines and show that they originate from the two inequivalent Se lattice sites. Second, we observe unusual field-independent linewidths, and attribute them to an unexpectedly strong internuclear coupling mediated by bulk electrons. These results call for a revision of earlier NMR studies and add insight into the bulk electronic properties of TIs., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The interplay between topological phases of matter and dissipative baths constitutes an emergent research topic with links to condensed matter, photonic crystals, cold atomic gases and quantum information. While recent studies suggest that dissipative baths can induce topological phases in intrinsically trivial quantum materials, the backaction of topological invariants on dissipative baths is overlooked. By exploring this backaction for a centrosymmetric Dirac insulator coupled to phonons, we show that the linewidths of bulk optical phonons can contain generic features that reveal the topology of the electronic structure. Intraband and interband contributions to the current-driven spin-orbit torque in magnetic materials lacking inversion symmetry are theoretically studied using Kubo formula. In addition to the current-driven field-like torque ${\bf T}_{\rm FL}= \tau_{\rm FL}{\bf m}\times{\bf u}_{\rm so}$ (${\bf u}_{\rm so}$ being a unit vector determined by the symmetry of the spin-orbit coupling), we explore the intrinsic contribution arising from impurity-independent interband transitions and producing an anti-damping-like torque of the form ${\bf T}_{\rm DL}= \tau_{\rm DL}{\bf m}\times({\bf u}_{\rm so}\times{\bf m})$. Analytical expressions are obtained in the model case of a magnetic Rashba two-dimensional electron gas, while numerical calculations have been performed on a dilute magnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As modeled by the Kohn-Luttinger Hamiltonian exchanged coupled to the Mn moments. Parametric dependences of the different torque components and similarities to the analytical results of the Rashba two-dimensional electron gas in the weak disorder limit are described., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

We demonstrate that the charge-spin conversion efficiency of topological insulators (TI) can be experimentally determined by injecting spin-polarized tunneling electrons into a TI. Through a comparative study between bismuth selenide and bismuth antimony telluride, we verified the topological-surface-state origin of the observed giant spin signals. By injecting energetic electrons into bismuth selenide, we further studied the energy dependence of the effective spin polarization at the TI surface. The experimentally verified large spin polarization, as well as our calculations, provides new insights into optimizing TI materials for near room-temperature spintronic applications.

We present a quantitative microscopic theory of the disorder- and phonon-induced coupling between surface and bulk states in topological insulator (TI) films. Nearly a decade after the discovery of topological insulators (TIs), the important task of identifying and characterizing their topological surface states through electrical transport experiments remains incomplete. The interpretation of these experiments is made difficult by the presence of residual bulk carriers and their coupling to surface states, which is not yet well understood. In this work, we present the first evidence for the existence and control of bulk-surface coupling in Bi2Te2Se nanoribbons, which are promising platforms for future TI-based devices. Our magnetoresistance measurements reveal that the number of coherent channels contributing to quantum interference in the nanoribbons changes abruptly when the film thickness exceeds the bulk phase relaxation length. We interpret this observation as an evidence for bulk-mediated coupling between metallic states located on opposite surfaces. This hypothesis is supported by additional magnetoresistance measurements conducted under a set of gate voltages and in a parallel magnetic field, the latter of which alters the intersurface coupling in a controllable way.

We develop an approximate theory of phonon-induced topological insulation in Dirac materials. In the weak coupling regime, long wavelength phonons may favor topological phases in Dirac insulators with direct and narrow bandgaps. This phenomenon originates from electron-phonon matrix elements, which change qualitatively under a band inversion. A similar mechanism applies to weak Coulomb interactions and spin-independent disorder; however, the influence of these on band topology is largely independent of temperature. As applications of the theory, we evaluate the temperature-dependence of the critical thickness and the critical stoichiometric ratio for the topological transition in CdTe/HgTe quantum wells and in BiTl(S$_{1-\delta}$Se$_{\delta})_2$, respectively., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

Spin transfer torques (STT) occur when electric currents travel through inhomogeneously magnetized systems and are important for the motion of magnetic textures such as domain walls. Since superconductors are easy-plane ferromagnets in particle-hole (charge) space, it is natural to ask whether any charge duals of STT phenomena exist therein. We find that the superconducting analogue of the adiabatic STT vanishes in a bulk superconductor with a momentum-independent order parameter, while the superconducting counterpart of the nonadiabatic STT does not vanish. This nonvanishing superconducting torque is induced by heat (rather than charge) currents and acts on the charge (rather than spin) degree of freedom. It can become significant in the vicinity of the superconducting transition temperature, where it generates a net quasiparticle charge and alters the dispersion and linewidth of low-frequency collective modes., Comment: 6 pages + appendices ; submitted to PRB

Phase slips in a one-dimensional closed array of Josephson junctions hybridize the persistent current states (PCS) and plasmon branches of excitations. The interference between phase slips passing through different junctions of the array makes the hybridization sensitive to the charges of the superconducting islands comprising the array. We show that electron-phonon interactions can alter the topological properties of Dirac insulators and semimetals, both at zero and nonzero temperature. We evaluate quantum corrections to conductivity in an electrically gated thin film of a three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator (TI). We derive approximate analytical expressions for the low-field magnetoresistance as a function of bulk doping and bulk-surface tunneling rate. Our results reveal parameter regimes for both weak localization and weak antilocalization, and include diffusive Weyl semimetals as a special case., Comment: After publication, we have noticed and corrected two small but potentially misleading typographic errors in Eqs. When an electron with well-defined momentum tunnels into a nonchiral Luttinger liquid, it breaks up into two separate wave packets that carry fractional charges and move in opposite directions. A direct observation of this phenomenon has proven elusive, mainly due to single-particle and plasmon backscattering caused by measurement probes. We develop a theoretical proposal for the charge Kondo effect in mesoscopic normal-superconductor-normal heterostructures, where the superconducting gap exceeds the electrostatic charging energy. Charge-Kondo correlations in these devices alter the conventional temperature-dependence of Andreev reflection and electron cotunneling. We predict typical Kondo temperatures of $\gtrsim 10 {\rm mK}$, and suggest experimental architectures that combine superconducting charge-qubits with semiconducting nanowires at cryogenic temperatures., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures; submitted to Phys. We present a theoretical study of interacting electron-hole pairs located on a magnetized surface of a strong topological insulator (TI). The excitonic energy levels and the optical absorption on such surface display unique and potentially measurable features such as (i) an enhanced binding energy for excitons whose total angular momentum is aligned with the magnetic exchange field, (ii) a stark dependence of the optical absorption on the direction of the magnetic exchange field as well as on the chirality of the incident light, and (iii) a tunable center-of-mass motion of spinful excitons induced by particle-hole asymmetry in the exchange field. Our predictions are relevant to surfaces of magnetically doped TIs or surfaces coated with magnetic films, in addition to TI nanowires placed under longitudinal magnetic fields., Comment: 12 pages and 9 figures. We develop a general method to evaluate the Kondo temperature in a multilevel quantum dot that is weakly coupled to conducting leads. Our theory reveals that the Kondo temperature is strongly enhanced when the intradot energy-level spacing is comparable to or smaller than the charging energy. We derive compact analytical expressions for the coupled spin-charge susceptibility of a clean helical metal at the surface of a three dimensional topological insulator (TI). These expressions lead to unconventional non-collinear RKKY interactions between two impurity magnetic moments placed on the surface of a TI, and predict the generation of electric currents by time-dependent magnetic moments. We theoretically study the joint influence of uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions, symmetric exchange anisotropy (with its axis parallel to the DM vector) and arbitrarily oriented magnetic fields on one-dimensional spin 1/2 antiferromagnets. We show that the zero-temperature phase diagram contains three competing phases: (i) an antiferromagnet with Neel vector in the plane spanned by the DM vector and the magnetic field, (ii) a {\em dimerized} antiferromagnet with Neel vector perpendicular to both the DM vector and the magnetic field, and (iii) a gapless Luttinger liquid. Phase (i) is destroyed by a small magnetic field component along the DM vector and is furthermore unstable beyond a critical value of easy-plane anisotropy, which we estimate using Abelian and non-Abelian bosonization along with perturbative renormalization group. We propose a mathematical equivalent of the spin model in a one-dimensional Josephson junction (JJ) array located in proximity to a bulk superconductor. When a ferromagnet is deposited on the surface of a topological insulator the topologically protected surface state develops a gap and becomes a 2-dimensional quantum Hall liquid. We demonstrate that the Hall current in such a liquid, induced by an external electric field, can have a large effect on the magnetization dynamics of the ferromagnet by changing the effective anisotropy field. This change is dissipationless and may be substantial even in weakly spin-orbit coupled ferromagnets. Current-induced torques are commonly used to manipulate non-collinear magnetization configurations. In this article we discuss current-induced torques present in a certain class of collinear magnetic systems, relating them to current-induced changes in magnetic anisotropy energy. The motion of simple domain walls and of more complex magnetic textures in the presence of a transport current is described by the Landau-Lifshitz-Slonczewski (LLS) equations. Predictions of the LLS equations depend sensitively on the ratio between the dimensionless material parameter $\beta$ which characterizes non-adiabatic spin-transfer torques and the Gilbert damping parameter $\alpha$. This ratio has been variously estimated to be close to 0, close to 1, and large compared to 1. By identifying $\beta$ as the influence of a transport current on $\alpha$, we derive a concise, explicit and relatively simple expression which relates $\beta$ to the band structure and Bloch state lifetimes of a magnetic metal. Using this expression we demonstrate that intrinsic spin-orbit interactions lead to intra-band contributions to $\beta$ which are often dominant and can be (i) estimated with some confidence and (ii) interpreted using the "breathing Fermi surface" model., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures; submitted to Phys. We study quantum interference corrections to the conductivity in (Ga,Mn)As ferromagnetic semiconductors using a model with disordered valence band holes coupled to localized Mn moments through a p-d kinetic-exchange interaction. We find that at Mn concentrations above 1% quantum interference corrections lead to negative magnetoresistance, i.e. to weak localization (WL) rather than weak antilocalization (WAL). Our work highlights key qualitative differences between (Ga,Mn)As and previously studied toy model systems, and pinpoints the mechanism by which exchange splitting in the ferromagnetic state converts valence band WAL into WL. We comment on recent experimental studies and theoretical analyses of low-temperature magnetoresistance in (Ga,Mn)As which have been variously interpreted as implying both WL and WAL and as requiring an impurity-band interpretation of transport in metallic (Ga,Mn)As., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures; submitted to Phys. We report on a study of Gilbert damping due to particle-hole pair excitations in conducting ferromagnets. We focus on a toy two-band model and on a four-band spherical model which provides an approximate description of ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As. These models are sufficiently simple that disorder-ladder-sum vertex corrections to the long-wavelength spin-spin response function can be summed to all orders. An important objective of this study is to assess the reliability of practical approximate expressions which can be combined with electronic structure calculations to estimate Gilbert damping in more complex systems., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures. We derive an approximate expression for the Gilbert damping coefficient \alpha_G of itinerant electron ferromagnets which is based on their description in terms of spin-density-functional-theory (SDFT) and Kohn-Sham quasiparticle orbitals. We argue for an expression in which the coupling of magnetization fluctuations to particle-hole transitions is weighted by the spin-dependent part of the theory's exchange-correlation potential, a quantity which has large spatial variations on an atomic length scale.
