Este trabajo, presenta algunas reflexiones que se han realizado de las investigaciones que se adelantan frente a la inclusión de la historia de las ciencias como una herramienta conceptual y metodológica, que dota de nuevos argumentos conceptuales y procedimentales al proceso de enseñanza/aprendizaje de las ciencias de la naturaleza. Así mismo, se da una posible versión de contexto cultural, como espacio en el cual las ciencias se han desarrollado y que retornan nuevamente allí. Lo que se convierte en la razón de ser de este trabajo y permite establecer la variedad de posibles relaciones que existen o que deben existir entre la historia de las ciencias de la naturaleza y el contexto cultural, y cómo esto impacta de forma directa los procesos tanto de enseñanza como de aprendizaje en los diferentes sistemas de formación.

Valproic acid, apart from being known as an anti-epileptic drug, has been proposed in the past few years, as a neuroprotective agent. The purpose of this study was to investigate firstly, if valproic acid protects the neurons from the damage produced by oxidative stress induced by ischemia-reperfusion in the brain of healthy rats, under the transitory occlusion of the right middle cerebral artery. Secondly it was studied if this antiepileptic drug induces changes on the expression of Bcl-2 and activated caspase-3 as a possible mechanism of action on apoptosis. The neurological evaluation of the animals that were subject to ischemia-reperfusion and received valproic acid was better than the ones who didn’t receive it. On another subject, the levels of malondialdehyde on the right cerebral hemisphere in the rats treated with valproic acid were below the levels of the control group in the same hemisphere, whereas the amount of carbonylated proteins was reduced by 67% compared to the control group. Besides, it was found by western blot, that in homogenized brain tissue of the animals under ischemia-reperfusion which received valproic acid, there was a rise on the density of the bands corresponding to Bcl-2, and a reduction of activated 3-capase in comparison to the ones who were not treated with the antiepileptic drug. It’s concluded that the treatment with valproic acid prevented the neurological deficit in healthy rats under Ischemia-reperfusion, blocking the effect of free radicals on lipids and proteins of the affected brain cortex, and it is suggested that the same drug intervenes on apoptosis induced during this type of damage, being able to be a therapeutic alternative in the treatment of cerebral ischemia.

El ácido valproico, que además de ser un conocido antiepiléptico, una serie de trabajos en los últimos años lo proponen como un agente neuroprotector. En éste trabajo se investigó primeramente, si el ácido valproico protege a las neuronas del daño producido por el estrés oxidativo inducido por la isquemia-reperfusión en el cerebro de ratas sanas sometidas a la oclusión transitoria de la arteria cerebral media derecha; en segundo lugar, se indagó si este fármaco induce cambios en la expresión de Bcl-2 y caspasa 3-activada como un posible mecanismo de acción sobre la muerte celular del tipo apoptótico. La evaluación neurológica de los animales que fueron sometidos a isquemia/reperfusión y recibieron ácido valproico fue mejor que los que no lo recibieron. Por otro lado, los niveles de malondialdehído en el hemisferio cerebral derecho en las ratas tratadas con ácido valproico fueron inferiores a los del mismo hemisferio del grupo control, mientras la cantidad de proteínas carboniladas se redujeron un 67% en comparación al grupo control. Además, se encontró por western blot, que en homogeneizados de tejido cerebral de los animales sometidos a isquemia/reperfusión y que recibieron ácido valproico, hubo un aumento significativo de la densidad de las bandas correspondientes a Bcl-2 y una disminución de caspasa 3-activada en comparación a los que no fueron tratados con este fármaco. Se concluye que el tratamiento con ácido valproico previno el déficit neurológico en ratas sanas sometidas a isquemia-reperfusión, bloqueando el efecto de los radicales libres sobre lípidos y proteínas de la corteza cerebral afectada y se sugiere que posiblemente este fármaco interviene en la muerte por apoptosis inducida durante este tipo de lesión, pudiendo ser una alternativa terapéutica en el tratamiento de la isquemia cerebral. Los pacientes con fisura labio-palatina unilateral presentan alteraciones anatómicas de la nariz y de las estructuras odontológicas que afectan a la simetría facial, estética y al crecimiento. Estas alteraciones pueden corregirse durante la cirugía labial con corrección nasal primaria si se realiza una técnica quirúrgica correcta. En el caso de que la reparación primaria sea inadecuada, la región nasal mostrará deformidades como estigma del problema inicial. El objetivo de este estudio es describir las alteraciones nasales y la relación que guardan las estructuras nasales con las unidades estéticas de la mejilla y del labio superior en 50 pacientes con labio y paladar hendido unilateral no sindrómico, operados mediante queiloplastia. Además, describimos los parámetros o mediciones nasales obtenidos en los pacientes con un resultado quirúrgico adecuado. Las alteraciones anatómicas que con mayor frecuencia hemos encontrado en nuestra serie son: desplazamiento caudal de la cúpula alar en 48 pacientes (96%); desviación del eje longitudinal nasal de 5 a 10º en 24 pacientes (48%); narina más grande del lado hendido en 28 pacientes (56%); presencia de muesca en la narina en 18 pacientes (36%); inserción de la base alar con el labio superior más caudal en el lado hendido en 35 pacientes (70%) y desplazamiento medial de la unión del borde lateral del ala con la mejilla en el lado hendido en 34 pacientes (68%). Estos datos permiten suponer que es posible llevar a cabo una adecuada corrección en la primera intervención. Patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate show anatomic disturbances related to nasal and odontologic tissues which directly affect facial symmetry, aesthetics and growth. These malformations can be repaired during the initial lip closure procedure with primary nasal correction, if a correct surgical technique is followed. If an incorrect surgical repair is performed, the nasal structures will show deformities which represent stigmata of the initial problem. The aim of this study is to describe the nasal deformities and the relationship between the nasal structures and the cheek and superior lip aesthetic units in 50 patients with nonsyndromic unilateral cleft lip and palate that previously underwent a cheiloplasty. Furthermore, nasal measurements in patients with an adequate surgical result are also described. The most frequent nasal anatomic abnormalities in our series were: caudal displacement of the alar dome in 48 patients (96%); deviation of the nasal longitudinal axis in 5 to 10º in 24 patients (48%); larger nostril on the cleft side in 28 patients (56%); nostril notch in 18 patients (36%); alar base junction with the upper lip caudally oriented on the cleft side in 35 patients (70%), and medial displacement of the tissue corresponding to the intersection of the alar lateral border with the cheek on the cleft side in 34 patients (68%). The data obtained show that an adequate surgical correction can be attained during the first intervention.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the incidence of damage by the leafworm Alabama argillacea (Hübner) on yields of cotton grown under rows spaced 0.38 m and 0.76 m at the irrigation area of Santiago del Estero, Argentina. The period evaluated was extended from first flower to first open boll. Treatments were T1 - without control of larvae, T2 - with control of larvae, T3 - control since first flower to the end of effective blooming, and T4 - with larval control since the end of effective blooming to first open boll. The effect of injuries on the crop was evaluated trough boll cotton yield. Larvae were sampled in a weekly basis and insects were present from the first flower until harvest. Populations of A. argillacea decreased crop yields in the two distances tested, by decreasing the weight or number of open bolls.

DiGeorge syndrome is characterized by developmental defects of the heart, parathyroid glands and thymus. Aim: To describe the clinical variability of DiGeorge syndrome and its relation with immunodeficiency. Patients and methods: A three years retrospective chart review from three hospitals of Santiago, Chile was conducted. We included patients with neonatal diagnosis of DiGeorge syndrome. Clinical and immuno-logic data were collected from their initial evaluation. Results: We found 9 patients with DiGeorge syndrome. All had dysmorphic facies, hypocalcemia and congenital heart disease. Three patients had hypoparathyroidism, 4 had interrupted aortic arch type B, 4 had tetralogy of Fallot and 1 had coarctation of aorta. Six patients had other malformations and associated diseases. FISH studies, performed in 8 patients, found the 22q11.2 microdeletion in all. Most patients had low CD3, CD4 and CD8 T cell counts, that ranged for CD3 T cells, between 256/mm3 and 3,664/mm³, for CD4 T cells, between 224/mm3 and 2,649/mm3, for CD8 T cells, between 26/mm³ and 942/mm³. To investigate the role of the retino-hypothalamic tract on fetal prolactin regulation, we examined the effect of ocular enucleation on fetal plasma prolactin. Eleven fetuses of Suffolk ewes were chronically catheterized during fall, and six of them were subjected to bilateral ocular enucleation. All ewes were kept at 12h:12h light:dark cycle (lights on at 0800 and off at 2000). The experiments were performed 5-9 days after surgery (GA control fetuses 125 +/- 1.5, optical enucleation 121.3 +/- 1.5 days). Blood samples were taken from fetuses hourly around the clock, and plasma prolactin and cortisol were measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA). Luteinizing hormone (LH) and Growth hormone (GH) were measured in pooled plasma samples from control and enucleated fetuses by RIA. Average plasma prolactin was 5-fold lower in enucleated than in control fetuses (9.6 +/- 0.5 and 54.2 +/- 3.3 ng/ml, SEM; P0.005). Both control and enucleated fetuses presented circadian rhythm of prolactin with acrophase between 1400 and 1830 h. An enucleated fetus was tested for response of prolactin to TRH. Prolactin increased as described in the literature. There was no change in plasma concentration of cortisol, LH or GH after ocular enucleation. Our data indicate that the optical pathway participates in prolactin regulation in the fetal sheep.

Following the CLIC conceptual design published in 2012, this report provides an overview of the CLIC project, its current status, and future developments. It presents the CLIC physics potential and reports on design, technology, and implementation aspects of the accelerator and the detector. For an optimal exploitation of its physics potential, CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in stages, at centre-of-mass energies of 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV, respectively, for a site length ranging from 11 km to 50 km. CLIC uses a two-beam acceleration scheme, in which normal-conducting high-gradient 12 GHz accelerating structures are powered via a high-current drive beam. For the first stage, an alternative with X-band klystron powering is also considered. CLIC accelerator optimisation, technical developments and system tests have resulted in significant progress in recent years. Moreover, this has led to an increased energy efficiency (power around 170 MW) for the 380 GeV stage, together with a reduced cost estimate at the level of 6 billion CHF. The detector concept, which matches the physics performance requirements and the CLIC experimental conditions, has been refined using improved software tools for simulation and reconstruction. Significant progress has been made on detector technology developments for the tracking and calorimetry systems. A wide range of CLIC physics studies has been conducted, both through full detector simulations with overlay of beam-induced backgrounds, and through parametric studies, together providing a broad overview of the CLIC physics potential. Each of the three energy stages adds cornerstones of the full CLIC physics programme, such as Higgs width and couplings, top-quark properties, Higgs self-coupling, direct searches, and many precision electroweak measurements. The interpretation of the combined results gives crucial and accurate insight into new physics, largely complementary to LHC and HL-LHC. Each of the three energy stages adds cornerstones of the full CLIC physics programme, such as Higgs width and couplings, top-quark properties, Higgs self-coupling, direct searches, and many precision electroweak measurements. The interpretation of the combined results gives crucial and accurate insight into new physics, largely complementary to LHC and HL-LHC. The construction of the first CLIC energy stage could start by 2026. First beams would be available by 2035, marking the beginning of a broad CLIC physics programme spanning 25-30 years.
