Using new continuum and molecular line data from the ALMA Three-millimeter Observations of Massive Star-forming Regions (ATOMS) survey and archival VLA, 4.86 GHz data, we present direct observational evidence of hierarchical triggering relating three epochs of massive star formation in a ring-like H II region, G24.47+0.49. We find from radio flux analysis that it is excited by a massive star(s) of spectral type O8.5V-O8V from the first epoch of star formation. The swept-up ionized ring structure shows evidence of secondary collapse, and within this ring a burst of massive star formation is observed in different evolutionary phases, which constitutes the second epoch. ATOMS spectral line (e.g., HCO$^+$(1-0)) observations reveal an outer concentric molecular gas ring expanding at a velocity of $\sim$ 9 $\rm km\,s^{-1}$, constituting the direct and unambiguous detection of an expanding molecular ring. It harbors twelve dense molecular cores with surface mass density greater than 0.05 $\rm g\,cm^{-2}$, a threshold typical of massive star formation. Leveraging the high resolution, high sensitivity, and wide frequency coverage of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), the QUARKS survey, standing for "Querying Underlying mechanisms of massive star formation with ALMA-Resolved gas Kinematics and Structures", is observing 139 massive star-forming clumps at ALMA Band 6 ($\lambda\sim$ 1.3 mm). This paper introduces the Atacama Compact Array (ACA) 7-m data. Combining multi-wavelength data, we provide the first edition of QUARKS atlas, offering insights into the multiscale and multiphase interstellar medium in high-mass star formation. The ACA 1.3 mm catalog includes 207 continuum sources that are called ACA sources. Their gas kinetic temperatures are estimated using three formaldehyde (H$_2$CO) transitions with a non-LTE radiation transfer model, and the mass and density are derived from a dust emission model. The ACA sources are massive (16-84 percentile values of 6-160 $M_{\odot}$), gravity-dominated ($M\propto R^{1.1}$) fragments within massive clumps, with supersonic turbulence ($\mathcal{M}>1$) and embedded star-forming protoclusters. We find a linear correlation between the masses of the fragments and the massive clumps, with a ratio of 6% between the two. When considering the fragments as representative of dense gas, the ratio indicates a dense gas fraction (DGF) of 6%, although with a wide scatter ranging from 1% to 10%. If we consider the QUARKS massive clumps to be what is observed at various scales, then the size-independent DGF indicates a self-similar fragmentation or collapsing mode in protocluster formation. With the ACA data over four orders of magnitude of luminosity-to-mass ratio ($L/M$), we find that the DGF increases significantly with $L/M$, which indicates clump evolutionary stage. We observed a limited fragmentation at the subclump scale, which can be explained by dynamic global collapse process., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures. High-latitude ($|b|>30^{\circ}$) molecular clouds have virial parameters that exceed 1, but whether these clouds can form stars has not been studied systematically. Using JCMT SCUBA-2 archival data, we surveyed 70 fields that target high-latitude Planck galactic cold clumps (HLPCs) to find dense cores with density of $10^{5}$-$10^{6}$ cm$^{-3}$ and size of $<0.1$ pc. The sample benefits from both the representativeness of the parent sample and covering densest clumps at the high column density end ($>1\times10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$). At an average noise rms of 15 mJy/beam, we detected Galactic dense cores in only one field, G6.04+36.77 (L183), while also identifying 12 extragalactic objects and two young stellar objects. Compared to the low-latitude clumps, dense cores are scarce in HLPCs. With synthetic observations, the densities of cores are constrained to be $n_c\lesssim10^5$ cm$^{-3}$, should they exist in HLPCs. Low-latitude clumps, Taurus clumps, and HLPCs form a sequence where a higher virial parameter corresponds to a lower dense core detection rate. If HLPCs were affected by the Local Bubble, the scarcity should favor turbulence-inhibited rather than supernova-driven star formation. Only a handful of massive starless core candidates have been discovered so far, but none of them have been fully confirmed. Within the MM1 clump in the filamentary infrared dark cloud G34.43+0.24 that was covered by the ALMA-ATOMS survey at Band 3 ($\sim2\arcsec$, 6000\,au) and the ALMA-QUARKS survey at Band 6 ($\sim 0.3\arcsec$, 900\,au), two prestellar core candidates MM1-C and E1 with masses of 71 and 20 \solarmass~and radii of 2100--4400\,au were discovered. The two cores show no obvious sign of star-formation activities. In particular, MM1-C is a very promising massive prestellar core candidate with a total gas mass of 71\,\solarmass. Within MM1-C, we detected two extremely dense substructures, C1 and C2, as characterized by their high densities of $\rm n_{H_2}\sim 10^{8-9} cm^{-3}$. Moreover, evidence of further fragmentation in C2 was also revealed. We have detected the primordial fragmentation in the earliest stage of massive star formation, and we speculate that MM1-C would be the birthplace of a massive multiple system. However, we cannot fully rule out the possibility that the massive prestellar core MM1-C will just form a cluster of low-mass stars if it undergoes further fragmentation., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

This paper presents an overview of the QUARKS survey, which stands for `Querying Underlying mechanisms of massive star formation with ALMA-Resolved gas Kinematics and Structures'. The QUARKS survey is observing 139 massive clumps covered by 156 pointings at ALMA Band 6 ($\lambda\sim$ 1.3 mm). In conjunction with data obtained from the ALMA-ATOMS survey at Band 3 ($\lambda\sim$ 3 mm), QUARKS aims to carry out an unbiased statistical investigation of massive star formation process within protoclusters down to a scale of 1000 au. This overview paper describes the observations and data reduction of the QUARKS survey, and gives a first look at an exemplar source, the mini-starburst Sgr B2(M). The wide-bandwidth (7.5 GHz) and high-angular-resolution (~0.3 arcsec) observations of the QUARKS survey allow to resolve much more compact cores than could be done by the ATOMS survey, and to detect previously unrevealed fainter filamentary structures. The spectral windows cover transitions of species including CO, SO, N$_2$D$^+$, SiO, H$_{30}\alpha$, H$_2$CO, CH$_3$CN and many other complex organic molecules, tracing gas components with different temperatures and spatial extents. QUARKS aims to deepen our understanding of several scientific topics of massive star formation, such as the mass transport within protoclusters by (hub-)filamentary structures, the existence of massive starless cores, the physical and chemical properties of dense cores within protoclusters, and the feedback from already formed high-mass young protostars., Comment: 9 figures, 4 tables, accepted by RAA

The ALMA Survey of Star Formation and Evolution in Massive Protoclusters with Blue Profiles (ASSEMBLE) aims to investigate the process of mass assembly and its connection to high-mass star formation theories in protoclusters in a dynamic view. We observed 11 massive (Mclump>1000 Msun), luminous (Lbol>10,000 Lsun), and blue-profile (infall signature) clumps by ALMA with resolution of 2200-5500 au at 350 GHz (870 um) in continuum and line emission. 248 dense cores were identified, including 106 cores showing protostellar signatures and 142 prestellar core candidates. Compared to early-stage infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) by ASHES, the core mass and surface density within the ASSEMBLE clumps exhibited significant increment, suggesting concurrent core accretion during the evolution of the clumps. The maximum mass of prestellar cores was found to be 2 times larger than that in IRDCs, indicating evolved protoclusters have the potential to harbor massive prestellar cores. The mass relation between clumps and their most massive core (MMCs) is observed in ASSEMBLE but not in IRDCs, which is suggested to be regulated by multiscale mass accretion. The mass correlation between the core clusters and their MMCs has a steeper slope compared to that observed in stellar clusters, which can be due to fragmentation of the MMC and stellar multiplicity. We observe a decrease in core separation and an increase in central concentration as protoclusters evolve. We report high angular resolution observations, made with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array in band 6, of high excitation molecular lines of $\rm CH_3CN$ and $\rm SO_2$ and of the H29$\alpha$ radio recombination line towards the G345.0061+01.794 B HC H II region, in order to investigate the physical and kinematical characteristics of its surroundings. Emission was detected in all observed components of the J=14$\rightarrow$13 rotational ladder of $\rm CH_3CN$ and in the $30_{4,26}-30_{3,27}$ and $32_{4,28}-32_{3,29}$ lines of $\rm SO_2$. The peak of the velocity integrated molecular emission is located $\sim$0$\,.\!\!^{\prime\prime}$4 northwest of the peak of the continuum emission. The first-order moment images and channel maps show a velocity gradient, of 1.1 km s$^{-1}$ arcsec$^{-1}$, across the source, and a distinctive spot of blueshifted emission towards the peak of the zero-order moment. The rotational temperature is found to decrease from 252$\pm24$ Kelvin at the peak position to 166$\pm16$ Kelvin at its edge, indicating that our molecular observations are probing a hot molecular core that is internally excited. The emission in the H29$\alpha$ line arises from a region of 0$\,.\!\!^{\prime\prime}$65 in size, where its peak coincides with that of the dust continuum. We model the kinematical characteristics of the "central blue spot" feature as due to infalling motions, suggesting a central mass of 172.8$\pm8.8 M_{\odot}$. Our observations indicate that this HC H II region is surrounded by a compact structure of hot molecular gas, which is rotating and infalling toward a central mass, that is most likely confining the ionized region. The observed scenario is reminiscent of a "butterfly pattern" with an approximately edge-on torus and ionized gas roughly parallel to its rotation axis., Comment: Accepted by ApJ

There is growing evidence that high-mass star formation and hub-filament systems (HFS) are intricately linked. The gas kinematics along the filaments and the forming high-mass star(s) in the central hub are in excellent agreement with the new generation of global hierarchical high-mass star formation models. In this paper, we present an observational investigation of a typical HFS cloud, G310.142+0.758 (G310 hereafter) which reveals unambiguous evidence of mass inflow from the cloud scale via the filaments onto the forming protostar(s) at the hub conforming with the model predictions. Continuum and molecular line data from the ATOMS and MALT90 surveys are used that cover different spatial scales. Three filaments (with total mass $5.7\pm1.1\times 10^3~M_{\odot}$) are identified converging toward the central hub region where several signposts of high-mass star formation have been observed. The hub region contains a massive clump ($1280\pm260~M_{\odot}$) harbouring a central massive core. Additionally, five outflow lobes are associated with the central massive core implying a forming cluster. The observed large-scale, smooth and coherent velocity gradients from the cloud down to the core scale, and the signatures of infall motion seen in the central massive clump and core, clearly unveil a nearly-continuous, multi-scale mass accretion/transfer process at a similar mass infall rate of $\sim 10^{-3}~M_{\odot}~yr^{-1}$ over all scales, feeding the central forming high-mass protostar(s) in the G310 HFS cloud., Comment: Accepted to publish in ApJ. 10 pages with 6 figures and 2 tables

The initial conditions found in infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) provide insights on how high-mass stars and stellar clusters form. We have conducted high-angular resolution and high-sensitivity observations toward thirty-nine massive IRDC clumps, which have been mosaicked using the 12m and 7m arrays from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The targets are 70 $\mu$m dark massive (220-4900 $M_\odot$), dense ($>$10$^4$ cm$^{-3}$), and cold ($\sim$10-20K) clumps located at distances between 2 and 6 kpc. We identify an unprecedented number of 839 cores, with masses between 0.05 and 81 $M_\odot$ using 1.3 mm dust continuum emission. About 55% of the cores are low-mass ($<$1 $M_\odot$), whereas $\lesssim$1% (7/839) are high-mass ($\gtrsim$27 $M_\odot$). We detect no high-mass prestellar cores. The most massive cores (MMC) identified within individual clumps lack sufficient mass to form high-mass stars without additional mass feeding. We find that the mass of the MMCs is correlated with the clump surface density, implying denser clumps produce more massive cores and a larger number of cores. There is no significant mass segregation except for a few tentative detections. In contrast, most clumps show segregation once the clump density is considered instead of mass. Although the dust continuum emission resolves clumps in a network of filaments, some of which consist of hub-filament systems, the majority of the MMCs are not found in the hubs. We study the astrochemical diagnostics of the isolated massive protostar G28.20-0.05. We analyze data from ALMA 1.3~mm observations with resolution of 0.2 arcsec ($\sim$1,000 au). We detect emission from a wealth of species, including oxygen-bearing (e.g., $\rm{H_2CO}$, $\rm{CH_3OH}$, $\rm{CH_3OCH_3}$), sulfur-bearing (SO$_2$, H$_2$S) and nitrogen-bearing (e.g., HNCO, NH$_2$CHO, C$_2$H$_3$CN, C$_2$H$_5$CN) molecules. We discuss their spatial distributions, physical conditions, correlation between different species and possible chemical origins. In the central region near the protostar, we identify three hot molecular cores (HMCs). HMC1 is part of a mm continuum ring-like structure, is closest in projection to the protostar, has the highest temperature of $\sim300\:$K, and shows the most line-rich spectra. HMC2 is on the other side of the ring, has a temperature of $\sim250\:$K, and is of intermediate chemical complexity. HMC3 is further away, $\sim3,000\:$au in projection, cooler ($\sim70\:$K) and is the least line-rich. The three HMCs have similar mass surface densities ($\sim10\:{\rm{g\:cm}}^{-2}$), number densities ($n_{\rm H}\sim10^9\:{\rm{cm}}^{-3}$) and masses of a few $M_\odot$. The total gas mass in the cores and in the region out to $3,000\:$au is $\sim 25\:M_\odot$, which is comparable to that of the central protostar. Based on spatial distributions of peak line intensities as a function of excitation energy, we infer that the HMCs are externally heated by the protostar. We present a statistical study of a sample of 17 hub-filament-system (HFS) clouds of high-mass star formation using high-angular resolution ($\sim$1-2 arcsecond) ALMA 1.3mm and 3mm continuum data. The sample includes 8 infrared (IR)-dark and 9 IR-bright types, which correspond to an evolutionary sequence from the IR-dark to IR-bright stage. The central massive clumps and their associated most massive cores are observed to follow a trend of increasing mass ($M$) and mass surface density ($\Sigma$) with evolution from IR-dark to IR-bright stage. In addition, a mass-segregated cluster of young stellar objects (YSOs) are revealed in both IR-dark and IR-bright HFSs with massive YSOs located in the hub and the population of low-mass YSOs distributed over larger areas. Moreover, outflow feedback in all HFSs are found to escape preferentially through the inter-filamentary diffuse cavities, suggesting that outflows would render a limited effect on the disruption of the HFSs and ongoing high-mass star formation therein. From the above observations, we suggest that high-mass star formation in the HFSs can be described by a multi-scale mass accretion/transfer scenario, from hub-composing filaments through clumps down to cores, that can naturally lead to a mass-segregated cluster of stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 16 pages, 8 figures, and 3 tables

We present ALMA Band-3/7 observations towards "the Heart" of a massive hub-filament system (HFS) SDC335, to investigate its fragmentation and accretion. At a resolution of $\sim0.03$ pc, 3 mm continuum emission resolves two massive dense cores MM1 and MM2, with $383(^{+234}_{-120})$ $M_\odot$ (10-24% mass of "the Heart") and $74(^{+47}_{-24})$ $M_\odot$, respectively. With a resolution down to 0.01 pc, 0.87 mm continuum emission shows MM1 further fragments into six condensations and multi-transition lines of H$_2$CS provide temperature estimation. The relation between separation and mass of condensations at a scale of 0.01 pc favors turbulent Jeans fragmentation where the turbulence seems to be scale-free rather than scale-dependent. We use the H$^{13}$CO$^+$ (1-0) emission line to resolve the complex gas motion inside "the Heart" in position-position-velocity space. We identify four major gas streams connected to large-scale filaments, inheriting the anti-clockwise spiral pattern. Along these streams, gas feeds the central massive core MM1. Assuming an inclination angle of $45(\pm15)^{\circ}$ and a H$^{13}$CO$^+$ abundance of $5(\pm3)\times10^{-11}$, the total mass infall rate is estimated to be $2.40(\pm0.78)\times10^{-3}$ $M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, numerically consistent with the accretion rates derived from the clump-scale spherical infall model and the core-scale outflows. The consistency suggests a continuous, near steady-state, and efficient accretion from global collapse, therefore ensuring core feeding. Hydrogen recombination lines (RRLs) are one of the major diagnostics of the physical properties of H{\sc ii} regions. We use RRL H40$\alpha$, He40$\alpha$ and 3 mm continuum emission to investigate the properties of a large sample of resolved UC H{\sc ii} regions identified in the ATOMS survey. In total, we identify 94 UC H{\sc ii} regions from H40$\alpha$ emission. The basic parameters for these UC H{\sc ii} regions such as electron density, emission measure, electron temperature, ionic abundance ratio (n$_{\rm He^+}$/n$_{\rm H^+}$), and line width are derived. The median electron density and the median n$_{\rm He^+}$/n$_{\rm H^+}$ ratio of these UC H{\sc ii} regions derived from RRLs are $\sim$9000 cm$^{-3}$ and 0.11, respectively. Within UC H{\sc ii} regions, the n$_{\rm He^+}$/n$_{\rm H^+}$ ratios derived from the intensity ratio of the He40$\alpha$ and H40$\alpha$ lines seems to be higher in the boundary region than in the center. The H40$\alpha$ line width is mainly broadened by thermal motion and microturbulence. The electron temperature of these UC H{\sc ii} regions has a median value of $\sim$6700 K, and its dependence on galactocentric distance is weak.

We present new continuum and molecular line data from the ALMA Three-millimeter Observations of Massive Star-forming regions (ATOMS) survey for the two protoclusters, G12.42+0.50 and G19.88-0.53. The 3 mm continuum maps reveal seven cores in each of the two globally contracting protoclusters. These cores satisfy the radius-mass relation and the surface mass density criteria for high-mass star formation. Similar to their natal clumps, the virial analysis of the cores suggests that they are undergoing gravitational collapse ($\rm \alpha_{vir} << 2$). The clump to core scale fragmentation is investigated and the derived core masses and separations are found to be consistent with thermal Jeans fragmentation. We detect large-scale filamentary structures with velocity gradients and multiple outflows in both regions. Dendrogram analysis of the H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$ map identifies several branch and leaf structures with sizes $\sim$ 0.1 and 0.03 pc, respectively. The supersonic gas motion displayed by the branch structures is in agreement with the Larson power-law indicating that the gas kinematics at this spatial scale is driven by turbulence. The transition to transonic/subsonic gas motion is seen to occur at spatial scales of $\sim$0.1 pc indicating the dissipation of turbulence. In agreement with this, the leaf structures reveal gas motions that deviate from the slope of Larson's law. From the large-scale converging filaments to the collapsing cores, the gas dynamics in G12.42+0.50 and G19.88-0.53 show scale-dependent dominance of turbulence and gravity and the combination of these two driving mechanisms needs to be invoked to explain massive star formation in the protoclusters., Comment: 23 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a detailed study of the massive star-forming region G35.2-0.74N with ALMA 1.3 mm multi-configuration observations. At 0.2" (440 au) resolution, the continuum emission reveals several dense cores along a filamentary structure, consistent with previous ALMA 0.85 mm observations. At 0.03" (66 au) resolution, we detect 22 compact sources, most of which are associated with the filament. Four of the sources are associated with compact centimeter continuum emission, and two of these are associated with H30{\alpha} recombination line emission. The H30{\alpha} line kinematics show ordered motion of the ionized gas, consistent with disk rotation and/or outflow expansion. We construct models of photoionized regions to simultaneously fit the multi-wavelength free-free fluxes and the H30{\alpha} total fluxes. The derived properties suggest the presence of at least three massive young stars with nascent hypercompact Hii regions. Two of these ionized regions are surrounded by a large rotating structure that feeds two individual disks, revealed by dense gas tracers, such as SO2, H2CO, and CH3OH. In particular, the SO2 emission highlights two spiral structures in one of the disks and probes the faster-rotating inner disks. The 12CO emission from the general region reveals a complex outflow structure, with at least four outflows identified. The remaining 18 compact sources are expected to be associated with lower-mass protostars forming in the vicinity of the massive stars. We find potential evidence for disk disruption due to dynamical interactions in the inner region of this protocluster. The spatial distribution of the sources suggests a smooth overall radial density gradient without subclustering, but with tentative evidence of primordial mass segregation., Comment: 46 pages, 21 figures, 5 tables. We investigate the presence of hub-filament systems in a large sample of 146 active proto-clusters, using H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$ J=1-0 molecular line data obtained from the ATOMS survey. We find that filaments are ubiquitous in proto-clusters, and hub-filament systems are very common from dense core scales ($\sim$0.1 pc) to clump/cloud scales ($\sim$1-10 pc). The proportion of proto-clusters containing hub-filament systems decreases with increasing dust temperature ($T_d$) and luminosity-to-mass ratios ($L/M$) of clumps, indicating that stellar feedback from H{\sc ii} regions gradually destroys the hub-filament systems as proto-clusters evolve. Clear velocity gradients are seen along the longest filaments with a mean velocity gradient of 8.71 km s$^{-1}$pc$^{-1}$ and a median velocity gradient of 5.54 km s$^{-1}$pc$^{-1}$. We find that velocity gradients are small for filament lengths larger than $\sim$1~pc, probably hinting at the existence of inertial inflows, although we cannot determine whether the latter are driven by large-scale turbulence or large-scale gravitational contraction. In contrast, velocity gradients below $\sim$1~pc dramatically increase as filament lengths decrease, indicating that the gravity of the hubs or cores starts to dominate gas infall at small scales. We suggest that self-similar hub-filament systems and filamentary accretion at all scales may play a key role in high-mass star formation., Comment: 16 pages

Young massive clusters (YMCs) are compact ($\lesssim$1 pc), high-mass (>10${}^4$ M${}_{\odot}$) stellar systems of significant scientific interest. Due to their rarity and rapid formation, we have very few examples of YMC progenitor gas clouds before star formation has begun. As a result, the initial conditions required for YMC formation are uncertain. We present high-resolution (0.13$^{\prime\prime}$, $\sim$1000 au) ALMA observations and Mopra single-dish data, showing that Galactic Centre dust ridge `Cloud d' (G0.412$+$0.052, mass$\sim 7.6 \times 10^4$ M$_{\odot}$, radius$\sim 3.2$ pc) has the potential to become an Arches-like YMC (10$^4$ M$_{\odot}$, r$\sim$1 pc), but is not yet forming stars. This would mean it is the youngest known pre-star forming massive cluster and therefore could be an ideal laboratory for studying the initial conditions of YMC formation. We find 96 sources in the dust continuum, with masses $\lesssim$3 M$_{\odot}$ and radii of $\sim$10${}^3$ au. The source masses and separations are more consistent with thermal rather than turbulent fragmentation. It is not possible to unambiguously determine the dynamical state of most of the sources, as the uncertainty on virial parameter estimates is large. We find evidence for large-scale ($\sim$1 pc) converging gas flows, which could cause the cloud to grow rapidly, gaining 10$^4$ M$_{\odot}$ within 10$^5$ yr. The highest density gas is found at the convergent point of the large-scale flows. We expect this cloud to form many high-mass stars, but find no high-mass starless cores. If the sources represent the initial conditions for star formation, the resulting IMF will be bottom-heavy.

Hot cores characterized by rich lines of complex organic molecules are considered as ideal sites for investigating the physical and chemical environments of massive star formation. We present a search for hot cores by using typical nitrogen- and oxygen-bearing complex organic molecules (C$_2$H$_5$CN, CH$_3$OCHO and CH$_3$OH), based on ALMA Three-millimeter Observations of Massive Star-forming regions (ATOMS). The angular resolutions and line sensitivities of the ALMA observations are better than 2 arcsec and 10 mJy/beam, respectively. A total of 60 hot cores are identified with 45 being newly detected, in which the complex organic molecules have high gas temperatures ($>$ 100 K) and small source sizes ($<$ 0.1 pc). So far this is the largest sample of hot cores observed with similar angular resolution and spectral coverage. The observations have also shown nitrogen and oxygen differentiation in both line emission and gas distribution in 29 hot cores. Column densities of CH$_3$OH and CH$_3$OCHO increase as rotation temperatures rise. The column density of CH$_3$OCHO correlates tightly with that of CH$_3$OH. The pathways for production of different species are discussed. Based on the spatial position difference between hot cores and UC~H{\sc ii} regions, we conclude that 24 hot cores are externally heated while the other hot cores are internally heated. To understand the nature of SiO emission, we conducted ACA observations of the SiO (2-1) lines toward 146 massive star-forming regions, as part of the ALMA Three-millimeter Observations of Massive Star-forming regions (ATOMS) survey. We detected SiO emission in 128 (87.7$\%$) sources and identified 171 SiO clumps, 105 of which are spatially separated from 3 mm continuum emission. A large amount of the SiO line profiles (60$\%$) are non-Gaussian. The velocity dispersion of the SiO lines ranges from 0.3 to 5.43 km s$^{-1}$. In 63 sources the SiO clumps are associated with H$_\rm{II}$ regions characterized by H40$\alpha$ emission. We find that 68$\%$ (116) of the SiO clumps are associated with strong outflows. The median velocity dispersion of the SiO line for outflow sources and non-outflow sources is 1.91 km s$^{-1}$ and 0.99 km s$^{-1}$, respectively. These results indicate that outflow activities could be connected to strongly shocked gas. The velocity dispersion and [SiO]/[H$^{13}$CO$^+$] intensity ratio do not show any correlation with the dust temperature and particle number density of clumps. We find a positive correlation between the SiO line luminosity and the bolometric luminosity, implying stronger shock activities are associated with more luminous proto-clusters. The SiO clumps in associations with H$_\rm{II}$ regions were found to show a steeper feature in $L_\rm{sio}$/$L_\rm{bol}$. The SiO line luminosity and the fraction of shocked gas have no apparent evidence of correlation with the evolutionary stages traced by luminosity to mass ratio ($L_\rm{bol}/M$)., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures

We report high-resolution 1.3~mm continuum and molecular line observations of the massive protostar G28.20-0.05 with ALMA. The continuum image reveals a ring-like structure with 2,000~au radius, similar to morphology seen in archival 1.3~cm VLA observations. Based on its spectral index and associated H$30\alpha$ emission, this structure mainly traces ionised gas. However, there is evidence for $\sim30$~M$_{\odot}$ of dusty gas near the main mm continuum peak on one side of the ring, as well as in adjacent regions within 3,000~au. A virial analysis on scales of $\sim$2,000~au from hot core line emission yields a dynamical mass of $\sim80\:M_\odot$. A strong velocity gradient in the H$30\alpha$ emission is evidence for a rotating, ionized disk wind, which drives a larger-scale molecular outflow. An infrared SED analysis indicates a current protostellar mass of $m_*\sim40\:M_\odot$ forming from a core with initial mass $M_c\sim300\:M_\odot$ in a clump with mass surface density of $\Sigma_{\rm cl}\sim 0.8\:{\rm g\:cm}^{-2}$. Thus the SED and other properties of the system can be understood in the context of core accretion models. Structure-finding analysis on the larger-scale continuum image indicates G28.20-0.05 is forming in a relatively isolated environment, with no other concentrated sources, i.e., protostellar cores, above $\sim 1\:M_\odot$ found from $\sim$0.1 to 0.4~pc around the source. This implies that a massive star can form in relative isolation and the dearth of other protostellar companions within the $\sim1$~pc environs is a strong constraint on massive star formation theories that predict the presence of a surrounding protocluster., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

We have identified 453 compact dense cores in 3 mm continuum emission maps in the ATOMS (ALMA Three-millimeter Observations of Massive Star-forming regions) survey, and compiled three catalogues of high-mass star forming cores. One catalogue, referred to as H/UC-HII catalogue, includes 89 cores that enshroud hyper/ultra compact (H/UC) HII regions as characterized by associated compact H40alpha emission. A second catalogue, referred to as pure s-cHMC, includes 32 candidate Hot Molecular Cores (HMCs) showing rich spectra (N>20lines) of complex organic molecules (COMs) but not associated with H/UC-HII regions. The third catalogue, referred to as pure w-cHMC, includes 58 candidate HMCs with relatively low levels of COM richness and not associated with H/UC-HII regions. These three catalogues of dense cores provide an important foundation for future studies of the early stages of high-mass star formation across the Milky Way. We also find that nearly half of H/UC-HII cores are candidate HMCs. From the number counts of COM-containing and H/UC-HII cores, we suggest that the duration of high-mass protostellar cores showing chemically rich features is at least comparable to the lifetime of H/UC-HII regions. For cores in the H/UC-HII catalogue, the width of the H40alpha line increases as the core size decreases, suggesting that the non-thermal dynamical and/or pressure line-broadening mechanisms dominate on the smaller scales of the H/UC-HII cores., Comment: 17 pages, five tables, and 11 figures. We report the most detailed $1-3$ GHz radio continuum emission map of the nearest region of massive star formation, the Carina Nebula. As part of a large program with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, we have covered $\sim$ 12 deg$^2$, achieving an angular resolution of $\sim$ 16 arcsec, representing the largest and most complete map of the radio continuum to date. Our continuum map shows a spectacular and complex distribution of emission across the nebula, with multiple structures such as filaments, shells, and fronts across a wide range of size scales. The ionization fronts have advanced far into the southern and northern region of the Galactic Plane, as fronts are clearly detected at distances $\sim$ 80 pc from the stellar clusters in the center. We estimated an ionization photon luminosity $Q_\mathrm{H}=(7.8 \pm 0.8) \times 10^{50}$ s$^{-1}$ which corresponds to $\sim 85\%$ of the total value obtained from stellar population studies. Thus, approximately $15\%$ of the ionizing flux has escaped from the nebula into the diffuse Galactic Interstellar Medium. Comparison between radio continuum and the hydrogen atomic and molecular gas maps offers a clear view of the bipolar outflow driven by the energy released by the massive stellar clusters that also affects the fraction of molecular gas across the nebula. Comparison between 8$\mu$m and 70$\mu$m emission maps and the radio continuum reveals how the hot gas permeates through the molecular cloud, shapes the material into features such as pillars, small shells and arc-like structures, and ultimately, escapes., Comment: 18 pages, 16 Figures, 1 appendix

Prestellar cores are self-gravitating dense and cold structures within molecular clouds where future stars are born. They are expected, at the stage of transitioning to the protostellar phase, to harbor centrally concentrated dense (sub)structures that will seed the formation of a new star or the binary/multiple stellar systems. Characterizing this critical stage of evolution is key to our understanding of star formation. In this work, we report the detection of high density (sub)structures on the thousand-au scale in a sample of dense prestellar cores. Through our recent ALMA observations towards the Orion molecular cloud, we have found five extremely dense prestellar cores, which have centrally concentrated regions $\sim$ 2000 au in size, and several $10^7$ $cm^{-3}$ in average density. Masses of these centrally dense regions are in the range of 0.30 to 6.89 M$_\odot$. {\it For the first time}, our higher resolution observations (0.8$'' \sim $ 320 au) further reveal that one of the cores shows clear signatures of fragmentation; such individual substructures/fragments have sizes of 800 -1700 au, masses of 0.08 to 0.84 M$_\odot$, densities of $2 - 8\times 10^7$ $cm^{-3}$ and separations of $\sim 1200$ au. We present high spatial resolution ($52$ au) observations of the high-mass young stellar object (HMYSO) G345.4938+01.4677 made using the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA). This O-type HMYSO is located at 2.38 kpc and it is associated with a luminosity of $1.5\times10^5 L_\odot$. We detect circumstellar emission from the H$38\beta$ hydrogen recombination line showing a compact structure rotating perpendicularly to the previously detected radio jet. We interpret this emission as tracing a photo-ionized accretion disk around the HMYSO. While this disk-like structure seems currently too small to sustain continued accretion, the data present direct observational evidence of how disks can effectively survive the photo-ionization feedback from young high-mass stars. We combine MUSE and ALMA observations with theoretical models to evaluate how a tadpole-shaped globule located in the Carina Nebula has been influenced by its environment. This globule is now relatively small (radius ~2500 au), hosts a protostellar jet+outflow (HH 900) and, with a blue-shifted velocity of ~10 km/s, is travelling faster than it should be if its kinematics were set by the turbulent velocity dispersion of the precursor cloud. Its outer layers are currently still subject to heating, but comparing the internal and external pressures implies that the globule is in a post-collapse phase. Intriguingly the outflow is bent, implying that the YSO responsible for launching it is comoving with the globule, which requires that the star formed after the globule was up to speed since otherwise it would have been left behind. We conclude that the most likely scenario is one in which the cloud was much larger before being subject to radiatively-driven implosion, which accelerated the globule to the high observed speeds under the photoevaporative rocket effect and triggered the formation of the star responsible for the outflow. The globule may now be in a quasi-steady state following collapse. Finally, the HH 900 YSO is likely $\gtrsim$1 M$_{\odot}$ and may be the only star forming in the globule. It may be that this process of triggered star formation has prevented the globule from fragmenting to form multiple stars (e.g., due to heating) and has produced a single higher mass star., Comment: MNRAS, accepted

The "ATOMS," standing for {\it ALMA Three-millimeter Observations of Massive Star-forming regions}, survey has observed 146 active star forming regions with ALMA Band 3, aiming to systematically investigate the spatial distribution of various dense gas tracers in a large sample of Galactic massive clumps, to study the roles of stellar feedback in star formation, and to characterize filamentary structures inside massive clumps. In this work, the observations, data analysis, and example science of the "ATOMS" survey are presented, using a case study for the G9.62+0.19 complex. Toward this source, some transitions, commonly assumed to trace dense gas, including CS $J = 2-1$, HCO$^+$ $J = 1-0$ and HCN $J = 1-0$, are found to show extended gas emission in low density regions within the clump; less than 25\% of their emission is from dense cores. SO, CH$_3$OH, H$^{13}$CN and HC$_3$N show similar morphologies in their spatial distributions and reveal well the dense cores. Widespread narrow SiO emission is present (over $\sim$1 pc), which may be caused by slow shocks from large--scale colliding flows or H{\sc ii} regions. Stellar feedback from an expanding H{\sc ii} region has greatly reshaped the natal clump, significantly changed the spatial distribution of gas, and may also account for the sequential high-mass star formation in the G9.62+0.19 complex. We present new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the tadpole, a small globule in the Carina Nebula that hosts the HH 900 jet+outflow system. Our data include $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O J=2-1, $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O J=3-2, and serendipitous detections of DCN J=3-2 and CS J=7-6. With angular resolution comparable to the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), our data reveal for the first time the bipolar molecular outflow in CO, seen only inside the globule, that is launched from the previously unseen jet-driving protostar (the HH 900 YSO). The biconical morphology joins smoothly with the externally irradiated outflow seen in ionized gas tracers outside the globule, tracing the overall morphology of a jet-driven molecular outflow. Continuum emission at the location of the HH 900 YSO appears to be slightly flattened perpendicular to outflow axis. Model fits to the continuum have a best-fit spectral index of $\sim 2$, suggesting cold dust and the onset of grain growth. In position-velocity space, $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O gas kinematics trace a C-shaped morphology, similar to infall profiles seen in other sources, although the global dynamical behaviour of the gas remains unclear. Line profiles of the CO isotopologues display features consistent with externally heated gas. We estimate a globule mass of $\sim 1.9$ M$_{\odot}$, indicating a remaining lifetime of $\sim 4$ Myr, assuming a constant photoevaporation rate. This long globule lifetime will shield the disk from external irradiation perhaps prolonging its life and enabling planet formation in regions where disks are typically rapidly destroyed., Comment: MNRAS, accepted

We report studies of the relationships between the total bolometric luminosity ($L_{\rm bol}$ or $L_{\rm TIR}$) and the molecular line luminosities of $J=1-0$ transitions of H$^{13}$CN, H$^{13}$CO$^+$, HCN, and HCO$^+$ with data obtained from ACA observations in the "ATOMS" survey of 146 active Galactic star forming regions. The correlations between $L_{\rm bol}$ and molecular line luminosities $L'_{\rm mol}$ of the four transitions all appear to be approximately linear. Line emission of isotopologues shows as large scatters in $L_{\rm bol}$-$L'_{\rm mol}$ relations as their main line emission. The log($L_{\rm bol}$/$L'_{\rm mol}$) for different molecular line tracers have similar distributions. The $L_{\rm bol}$-to-$L'_{\rm mol}$ ratios do not change with galactocentric distances ($R_{\rm GC}$) and clump masses ($M_{\rm clump}$). The molecular line luminosity ratios (HCN-to-HCO$^+$, H$^{13}$CN-to-H$^{13}$CO$^+$, HCN-to-H$^{13}$CN and HCO$^+$-to-H$^{13}$CO$^+$) all appear constant against $L_{\rm bol}$, dust temperature ($T_{\rm d}$), $M_{\rm clump}$ and $R_{\rm GC}$. Our studies suggest that both the main lines and isotopologue lines are good tracers of the total masses of dense gas in Galactic molecular clumps. The large optical depths of main lines do not affect the interpretation of the slopes in star formation relations. We find that the mean star formation efficiency (SFE) of massive Galactic clumps in the "ATOMS" survey is reasonably consistent with other measures of the SFE for dense gas, even those using very different tracers or examining very different spatial scales., Comment: Published on MNRAS. We present ALMA high spatial resolution observations towards two star forming regions located in one of the most extreme zones of star formation in the Galaxy, the Carina Nebula. One region is located at the center of the nebula and is severally affected by the stellar feedback from high-mass stars, while the other region is located further south and is less disturbed by the massive star clusters. We found that the region at the center of the nebula is forming less but more massive cores than the region located in the south, suggesting that the level of stellar feedback effectively influence the fragmentation process in clumps. Lines such as HCN, HCO$^{+}$ and SiO show abundant and complex gas distributions in both regions, confirming the presence of ionization and shock fronts. Jeans analysis suggests that the observed core masses in the region less affected by the massive stars are consistent with thermal fragmentation, but turbulent Jeans fragmentation might explain the high masses of the cores identified in the region in the center of Carina. Consistently, two different analyses in the HCO$^{+}$ line provided evidence for a higher level of turbulence in the gas more affected by the stellar feedback. The gas column density probability functions, N-PDFs, show log-normal shapes with clear transitions to power law regimes. We report Atacama Large Millimeter Array observations of 3 mm dust continuum emission and line emission, in HCO$^{+}$, H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$, N$_{2}$H$^{+}$ and CH$_{3}$CN, towards two massive and dense clumps (MDCs) in early but distinct evolutionary phases (prestellar and protostellar), made with the goal of investigating their fragmentation characteristics at angular scales of $\sim$1 $\arcsec$. Towards the prestellar clump we detected ten compact structures (cores), with radius from 1200 to 4500 AU and masses from 1.6 to 20~M$_\odot$. Half of these cores exhibit inverse P Cygni profiles in HCO$^{+}$ and are subvirialized indicating that they are undergoing collapse. Towards the protostellar clump we detected a massive (119~M$_\odot$) central core, with a strong mass infall rate, and nine less massive cores, with masses from 1.7 to 27~M$_\odot$ and radius from 1000 to 4300 AU. CH$_{3}$CN rotational temperatures were derived for 8 cores in the protostellar clump and 3 cores in the prestellar clump. Cores within the prestellar clump have smaller linewidths and lower temperatures than cores within the protostellar clump. The fraction of total mass in cores to clump mass is smaller in the prestellar clump ($\sim$6\%) than in the protostellar clump ($\sim$23\%). We conclude that we are witnessing the evolution of the dense gas in globally collapsing MDCs; the prestellar clump illustrating the initial stage of fragmentation, harboring cores that are individually collapsing, and the protostellar clump reflecting a later stage in which a considerable fraction of the gas has been gravitationally focused into the central region., Comment: 26 figures, 11 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ (Jan 4, 2020)

Massive protostars generate strong radiation feedback, which may help set the mass they achieve by the end of the accretion process. Studying such feedback is therefore crucial for understanding the formation of massive stars. We report the discovery of a photoionized bipolar outflow towards the massive protostar G45.47+0.05 using high-resolution observations at 1.3 mm with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) and at 7 mm with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). By modeling the free-free continuum, the ionized outflow is found to be a photoevaporation flow with an electron temperature of 10,000 K and an electron number density of ~1.5x10^7 cm^-3 at the center, launched from a disk of radius of 110 au. H30alpha hydrogen recombination line emission shows strong maser amplification, with G45 being one of very few sources to show such millimeter recombination line masers. The mass of the driving source is estimated to be 30-50 Msun based on the derived ionizing photon rate, or 30-40 Msun based on the H30alpha kinematics. The kinematics of the photoevaporated material is dominated by rotation close to the disk plane, while accelerated to outflowing motion above the disk plane. The mass loss rate of the photoevaporation outflow is estimated to be ~(2-3.5)x10^-5 Msun/yr. We also found hints of a possible jet embedded inside the wide-angle ionized outflow with non-thermal emissions. We present new MUSE/VLT observations of a small globule in the Carina H II region that hosts the HH 900 jet+outflow system. Data were obtained with the GALACSI ground-layer adaptive optics system in wide-field mode, providing spatially-resolved maps of diagnostic emission lines. These allow us to measure the variation of the physical properties in the globule and jet+outflow system. We find high temperatures ($T_e \approx 10^4$ K), modest extinction ($A_V \approx 2.5$ mag), and modest electron densities ($n_e \approx 200$ cm$^{-3}$) in the ionized gas. Higher excitation lines trace the ionized outflow; both the excitation and ionization in the outflow increase with distance from the opaque globule. In contrast, lower excitation lines that are collisionally de-excited at densities $\gtrsim 10^4$ cm$^{-3}$ trace the highly collimated protostellar jet. Assuming the globule is an isothermal sphere confined by the pressure of the ionization front, we compute a Bonnor-Ebert mass of $\sim 3.7$ M$_{\odot}$. This is two orders of magnitude higher than previous mass estimates, calling into question whether small globules like the Tadpole contribute to the bottom of the IMF. Derived globule properties are consistent with a cloud that has been and/or will be compressed by the ionization front on its surface. At the estimated globule photoevaporation rate of $\sim 5 \times 10^{-7}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, the globule will be completely ablated in $\sim 7$ Myr. Stars that form in globules like the Tadpole will emerge into the H II later and may help resolve some of the temporal tension between disk survival and enrichment., Comment: MNRAS, accepted

(Abridged) ASHES has been designed to systematically characterize the earliest stages and to constrain theories of high-mass star formation. A total of 12 massive (>500 $M_{\odot}$), cold (<15 K), 3.6-70 $\mu$m dark prestellar clump candidates, embedded in IRDCs, were carefully selected in the pilot survey to be observed with ALMA. We mosaiced each clump (~1 arcmin^2) in dust and line emission with the 12m/7m/TP arrays at 224 GHz, resulting in ~1.2" resolution (~4800 AU). As the first paper of the series, we concentrate on the dust emission to reveal the clump fragmentation. We detect 294 cores, from which 84 (29%) are categorized as protostellar based on outflow activity or 'warm core' line emission. The remaining 210 (71%) are considered prestellar core candidates. The number of detected cores is independent of the mass sensitivity range of the observations. On average, more massive clumps tend to form more cores. We find a large population of low-mass (<1 M) cores and no high-mass (>30 $M_{\odot}$) prestellar cores. The most massive prestellar core has a mass of 11 $M_{\odot}$. From the prestellar CMF, we derive a power law index of 1.17+-0.1, slightly shallower than Salpeter (1.35). We use the MST technique to characterize the separation between cores and their spatial distribution, and derive mass segregation ratios. While there is a range of core masses and separations detected in the sample, the mean separation and mass of cores are well explained by thermal fragmentation and are inconsistent with turbulent Jeans fragmentation. The core spatial distribution is well described by hierarchical subclustering rather than centrally peaked clustering. There is no conclusive evidence of mass segregation. During star formation, the accretion disk drives fast MHD winds which usually contain two components, a collimated jet and a radially distributed wide-angle wind. These winds entrain the surrounding ambient gas producing molecular outflows. We report recent observation of 12CO (2-1) emission of the HH 46/47 molecular outflow by the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array, in which we identify multiple wide-angle outflowing shell structures in both the blue and red-shifted outflow lobes. These shells are highly coherent in position-position-velocity space, extending to >40-50 km/s in velocity and 10^4 au in space with well defined morphology and kinematics. We suggest these outflowing shells are the result of the entrainment of ambient gas by a series of outbursts from an intermittent wide-angle wind. Episodic outbursts in collimated jets are commonly observed, yet detection of a similar behavior in wide-angle winds has been elusive. We present 247-GHz molecular line observations of methanol (CH$_3$OH) toward sixteen massive star-forming regions, using the APEX telescope with an angular resolution of $25''$. The sample covers a range of evolutionary states, including warm molecular cores, hot molecular cores, and ultracompact HII regions. The hot cores, all of which include UC HII regions, show rich molecular line spectra, although the strength of different species and transitions varies from source to source. In contrast, the warm cores do not show significant molecular line emission. Multiple methanol transitions are detected toward nine of the hot cores; eight of these had enough transitions to use the rotation diagram method to estimate rotational temperatures and column densities. The temperatures lie in the range 104$-$168 K and column densities from $3\times10^{16}$ to $7\times10^{18}$ cm$^{-2}$. Using the average methanol line parameters, we estimate virial masses, which fall in the range from 145 to 720 M$_\odot$ and proved to be significantly higher than the measured gas masses. We discuss possible scenarios to explain the chemical differences between hot cores and warm molecular cores. One of the observed methanol lines, $4_{2}-5_{1}A^{+}$ at 247.228 GHz, is predicted to show class II maser emission, similar in intensity to previously reported $J_0-J_{-1}E$ masers at 157 GHz. Almost all massive stars have bound stellar companions, existing in binaries or higher-order multiples. While binarity is theorized to be an essential feature of how massive stars form, essentially all information about such properties is derived from observations of already formed stars, whose orbital properties may have evolved since birth. Little is known about binarity during formation stages. Here we report high angular resolution observations of 1.3 mm continuum and H30alpha recombination line emission, which reveal a massive protobinary with apparent separation of 180 au at the center of the massive star-forming region IRAS07299-1651. From the line-of-sight velocity difference of 9.5 km/s of the two protostars, the binary is estimated to have a minimum total mass of 18 solar masses, consistent with several other metrics, and maximum period of 570 years, assuming a circular orbit. The H30alpha line from the primary protostar shows kinematics consistent with rotation along a ring of radius of 12 au. The observations indicate that disk fragmentation at several hundred au may have formed the binary, and much smaller disks are feeding the individual protostars., Comment: Published in Nature Astronomy. During the last decades, a great interest has emerged to know if even the most massive stars in our galaxy (namely the spectral O-type stars) are formed in a similar manner as the low- and intermediate-mass stars, that is, through the presence of accreting disks and powerful outflows. Here, using sensitive observations of the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA), we report a resolved Keplerian disk (with fifteen synthesized beams across its major axis) surrounding the deeply embedded O-type protostar IRAS16547$-$4247. The disk shows some asymmetries that could arise because of the disk is unstable and fragmenting or maybe because of different excitation conditions within the disk. The enclosed mass estimated from the disk Keplerian radial velocities is 25$\pm$3 M$_\odot$. The molecular disk is at the base of an ionized thermal radio jet and is approximately perpendicular to the jet axis orientation. We additionally find the existence of a binary system of compact dusty objects at the center of the accreting disk, which indicates the possible formation of an O-type star and a companion of lower mass. This is not surprising due to the high binary fraction reported in massive stars. We present observations and analysis of the massive molecular outflow G331.512-0.103, obtained with ALMA band 7, continuing the work from Merello et al. (2013). Several lines were identified in the observed bandwidth, consisting of two groups: lines with narrow profiles, tracing the emission from the core ambient medium; and lines with broad velocity wings, tracing the outflow and shocked gas emission. The physical and chemical conditions, such as density, temperature, and fractional abundances are calculated. The ambient medium, or core, has a mean density of $\sim 5\times 10^6$ cm$^{-3}$ and a temperature of $\sim 70$ K. The SiO and SO$_2$ emission trace the very dense and hot part of the shocked outflow, with values of $n_{\rm H_2}\sim10^9$ cm$^{-3}$ and $T \sim 160-200$ K. The interpretation of the molecular emission suggests an expanding cavity geometry powered by stellar winds from a new-born UCHII region, alongside a massive and high-velocity molecular outflow. This scenario, along with the estimated physical conditions, is modeled using the 3D geometry radiative transfer code MOLLIE for the SiO(J$=8-7$) molecular line. How stellar feedback from high-mass stars (e.g., H{\sc ii} regions) influences the surrounding interstellar medium and regulates new star formation is still unclear. To address this question, we observed the G9.62+0.19 complex in 850 $\mu$m continuum with the JCMT/POL-2 polarimeter. An ordered magnetic field has been discovered in its youngest clump, the G9.62 clump. The magnetic field strength is determined to be $\sim$1 mG. Magnetic field plays a larger role than turbulence in supporting the clump. However, the G9.62 clump is still unstable against gravitational collapse even if thermal, turbulent, and magnetic field support are taken into account all together. The magnetic field segments in the outskirts of the G9.62 clump seem to point toward the clump center, resembling a dragged-in morphology, indicating that the clump is likely undergoing magnetically-regulated global collapse. However, The magnetic field in its central region is aligned with the shells of the photodissociation regions (PDRs) and is approximately parallel to the ionization (or shock) front, indicating that the magnetic field therein is likely compressed by the expanding H{\sc ii} regions that formed in the same complex., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted to be published on ApJ letter

We report molecular line observations of the massive protostellar source G339.88-1.26 with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array. The observations reveal a highly collimated SiO jet extending from the 1.3 mm continuum source, which connects to a slightly wider but still highly collimated CO outflow. Rotational features perpendicular to the outflow axis are detected in various molecular emissions, including SiO, SO2, H2S, CH3OH, and H2CO emissions. Based on their spatial distributions and kinematics, we find that they trace different parts of the envelope-disk system. The SiO emission traces the disk and inner envelope in addition to the jet. The CH3OH and H2CO emissions mostly trace the infalling-rotating envelope, and are enhanced around the transition region between envelope and disk, i.e., the centrifugal barrier. The SO2 and H2S emissions are enhanced around the centrifugal barrier, and also trace the outer part of the disk. Envelope kinematics are consistent with rotating-infalling motion, while those of the disk are consistent with Keplerian rotation. The radius and velocity of the centrifugal barrier are estimated to be about 530 au and 6 km/s, leading to a central mass of about 11 solar masses, consistent with estimates based on spectral energy distribution fitting. These results indicate that an ordered transition from an infalling-rotating envelope to a Keplerian disk through a centrifugal barrier, accompanied by changes of types of molecular line emissions, is a valid description of this massive protostellar source. The SuperMALT survey is observing 76 MALT90 clumps at different evolutionary stages (from pre-stellar or quiescent to HII) in high excitation molecular lines and key isotopomers using the Apex 12m telescope with an angular resolution of $\sim$20" and a velocity resolution of $\sim$0.1 km/s. The aim of this survey is to determine the physical, chemical, and kinematical properties of the gas within clumps as they evolve. Here we report some preliminary results based on observations of the $J$=3-2 \& 4-3 lines of HNC, HCN, HCO$^+$, N$_2$H$^+$ and of the $J$=3-2 line of the isotopologue H$^{13}$CO$^+$. We find that the morphologies and line profiles vary with the evolutionary stage of the clumps. Using Galactic Plane surveys, we have selected a massive (1200 M$_\odot$), cold (14 K) 3.6-70 $\mu$m dark IRDC G331.372-00.116. This IRDC has the potential to form high-mass stars and, given the absence of current star formation signatures, it seems to represent the earliest stages of high-mass star formation. We have mapped the whole IRDC with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at 1.1 and 1.3 mm in dust continuum and line emission. The dust continuum reveals 22 cores distributed across the IRDC. In this work, we analyze the physical properties of the most massive core, ALMA1, which has no molecular outflows detected in the CO (2-1), SiO (5-4), and H$_2$CO (3-2) lines. This core is relatively massive ($M$ = 17.6 M$_\odot$), subvirialized (virial parameter $\alpha_{vir}=M_{vir}/M=0.14$), and is barely affected by turbulence (transonic Mach number of 1.2). Using the HCO$^+$ (3-2) line, we find the first detection of infall signatures in a relatively massive, prestellar core (ALMA1) with the potential to form a high-mass star. We estimate an infall speed of 1.54 km s$^{-1}$ and a high accretion rate of 1.96 $\times$ 10$^{-3}$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. ALMA1 is rapidly collapsing, out of virial equilibrium, more consistent with competitive accretion scenarios rather than the turbulent core accretion model. On the other hand, ALMA1 has a mass $\sim$6 times larger than the clumps Jeans mass, being in an intermediate mass regime ($M_{J}=2.7

We present molecular line observations of the high-mass molecular clump IRAS 16562$-$3959 taken at 3 mm using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at 1.$\!\!^{\prime\prime}$7 angular resolution ($0.014$ pc spatial resolution). This clump hosts the actively accreting high-mass young stellar object (HMYSO) G345.4938+01.4677, associated with a hypercompact HII region. We identify and analyze emission lines from 22 molecular species (encompassing 34 isomers) and classify them into two groups, depending on their spatial distribution within the clump. One of these groups gathers shock tracers (e.g., SiO, SO, HNCO) and species formed in dust grains like methanol (CH$_3$OH), ethenone or ketene (H$_2$CCO), and acetaldehyde (CH$_3$CHO). The second group collects species resembling the dust continuum emission morphology and which are formed mainly in the gas-phase, like hydrocarbons (CCH, c-C$_3$H$_2$, CH$_3$CCH), cyanopolyynes (HC$_3$N and HC$_5$N) and cyanides (HCN and CH$_3$C$_3$N). Emission from complex organic molecules (COMs) like CH$_3$OH, propanenitrile (CH$_3$CH$_2$CN), and methoxymethane (CH$_3$OCH$_3$) arise from gas in the vicinity of a hot molecular core ($T\gtrsim100$ K) associated with the HMYSO. Other COMs such as propyne (CH$_3$CCH), acrylonitrile (CH$_2$CHCN), and acetaldehyde seem to better trace warm ($T\lesssim80$ K) dense gas. In addition, deuterated ammonia (NH$_2$D) is detected mostly in the outskirts of IRAS 16562$-$3959, associated with near-infrared dark globules, probably gaseous remnants of the clump's prestellar phase. For a binary protostellar outflow system in which its members are located so close to each other (the separation being smaller than the addition of the widths of the flows) and with large opening angles, the collision seems unavoidable regardless of the orientation of the outflows. This is in contrast to the current observational evidence of just a few regions with indications of colliding outflows. Here, using sensitive observations of the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA), we report resolved images of carbon monoxide (CO) towards the binary flows associated with the BHR71 protostellar system. These images reveal for the first time solid evidence that their flows are partially colliding, increasing the brightness of the CO, the dispersion of the velocities in the interaction zone, and changing part of the orientation in one of the flows. Additionally, this impact opened the possibility of knowing the 3D geometry of the system, revealing that one of its components (IRS2) should be closer to us., Comment: Submitted to AJ, comments are welcome

We report ALMA observations with resolution $\approx0.5$" at 3 mm of the extended Sgr B2 cloud in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ). We detect 271 compact sources, most of which are smaller than 5000 AU. By ruling out alternative possibilities, we conclude that these sources consist of a mix of hypercompact HII regions and young stellar objects (YSOs). Most of the newly-detected sources are YSOs with gas envelopes which, based on their luminosities, must contain objects with stellar masses $M_*\gtrsim8$ M$_\odot$. Their spatial distribution spread over a $\sim12\times3$ pc region demonstrates that Sgr B2 is experiencing an extended star formation event, not just an isolated `starburst' within the protocluster regions. Using this new sample, we examine star formation thresholds and surface density relations in Sgr B2. While all of the YSOs reside in regions of high column density ($N(H_2)\gtrsim2\times10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$), not all regions of high column density contain YSOs. The observed column density threshold for star formation is substantially higher than that in solar vicinity clouds, implying either that high-mass star formation requires a higher column density or that any star formation threshold in the CMZ must be higher than in nearby clouds. The relation between the surface density of gas and stars is incompatible with extrapolations from local clouds, and instead stellar densities in Sgr B2 follow a linear $\Sigma_*-\Sigma_{gas}$ relation, shallower than that observed in local clouds. Together, these points suggest that a higher volume density threshold is required to explain star formation in CMZ clouds., Comment: Accepted to ApJ. Stellar feedback from high-mass stars (e.g., H{\sc ii} regions) can strongly influence the surrounding interstellar medium and regulate star formation. Our new ALMA observations reveal sequential high-mass star formation taking place within one sub-virial filamentary clump (the G9.62 clump) in the G9.62+0.19 complex. The 12 dense cores (MM 1-12) detected by ALMA are at very different evolutionary stages, from starless core phase to UC H{\sc ii} region phase. Three dense cores (MM6, MM7/G, MM8/F) are associated with outflows. The mass-velocity diagrams of outflows associated with MM7/G and MM8/F can be well fitted with broken power laws. The mass-velocity diagram of SiO outflow associated with MM8/F breaks much earlier than other outflow tracers (e.g., CO, SO, CS, HCN), suggesting that SiO traces newly shocked gas, while the other molecular lines (e.g., CO, SO, CS, HCN) mainly trace the ambient gas continuously entrained by outflow jets. Five cores (MM1, MM3, MM5, MM9, MM10) are massive starless core candidates whose masses are estimated to be larger than 25 M$_{\sun}$, assuming a dust temperature of $\leq$ 20 K. The shocks from the expanding H{\sc ii} regions ("B" \& "C") to the west may have great impact on the G9.62 clump through compressing it into a filament and inducing core collapse successively, leading to sequential star formation. Our findings suggest that stellar feedback from H{\sc ii} regions may enhance the star formation efficiency and suppress the low-mass star formation in adjacent pre-existing massive clumps., Comment: Accepted to ApJ
