Abstract

In this work we develop a new framework to deal numerically with discontinuous solutions in nonconservative hyperbolic systems. First an extension of the MOOD methodology to nonconservative systems based on Taylor expansions is presented. This extension combined with an in-cell discontinuous reconstruction operator are the key points to develop a new family of high-order methods that are able to capture exactly isolated shocks. Abstract

We are interested in the numerical approximation of discontinuous solutions in non conservative hyperbolic systems. An extension to second-order of a new strategy based on in-cell discontinuous reconstructions to deal with this challenging topic is presented. This extension is based on the combination of the first-order in-cell reconstruction and the MUSCL-Hancock reconstruction. The first-order strategy allowed in particular to capture exactly the isolated shocks and this new second-order extension keep this property. We also set the basis of an extension to high-order methods following this in-cell methodology and a way for capturing exactly more than one shock. Several numerical tests are proposed to validate the methods for the Coupled-Burgers system, Gas dynamics equations in Lagrangian coordinates and the modified shallow water system.

Abstract

In this paper, we investigate steady states of shallow water moment equations including bottom topographies. We derive a new hyperbolic shallow water moment model based on linearized moment equations that allows for a simple assessment of the steady states. After proving hyperbolicity of the new model, the steady states are fully identified. A well-balanced scheme is adopted to the specific structure of the new model and allows to preserve the steady states in numerical simulations.

Abstract

For the evolution of a compressible fluid in spherical symmetry on a Schwarzschild curved background, we design a class of well-balanced numerical algorithms with first-order or second-order of accuracy. We treat both the relativistic Burgers-Schwarzschild model and the relativistic Euler-Schwarzschild model and take advantage of the explicit or implicit forms available for the stationary solutions of these models. Our schemes follow the finite volume methodology and preserve the stationary solutions. Importantly, they allow us to investigate the global asymptotic behavior of such flows and determine the asymptotic behavior of the mass density and velocity field of the fluid., Comment: 40 pages

Abstract

We consider the control problem where, given an orthonormal tangent frame in the hyperbolic plane or three dimensional hyperbolic space, one is allowed to transport the frame a fixed distance $r > 0$ along the geodesic in direction of the first vector, or rotate it in place a right angle. We characterize the values of $r > 0$ for which the set of orthonormal frames accessible using these transformations is discrete. In the hyperbolic plane this is equivalent to solving the discreteness problem for a particular one parameter family of two-generator subgroups of $PSL_2(\mathbb{R})$. 16. Validation of Non-Formal and Informal Learning: The Hero with a Thousand Faces?

Abstract

Validation of non-formal and informal learning has been gaining political momentum in Europe within the implementation of lifelong learning policies since the early 2000s. Policy documents claim a variety of education, socio-political and economic benefits from the implementation of validation, making validation a "hero" for lifelong learning. This article discusses the concept of validation of non-formal and informal learning and provides an overview of the different "faces" and interpretations of validation. Starting with the terminology, the article discusses related terms such as recognition, prior learning, assessment, accreditation or certification and their different connotations. Principles and aspects that characterise the current use of validation as a policy priority in Europe are presented. The article highlights the major themes on validation and their implications for policy and research.

Abstract

This study presents a mathematical model of a parabolic trough solar collector with photovoltaic cells integrated into its solar receiver. A case study is presented, utilizing meteorological data obtained from the localities of Cuernavaca and Mexicali in Mexico. The results demonstrate moderately variable electrical and thermal energy production for Cuernavaca (387.93 kWh to 239.38 kWh and 1036.11 kWh to 641.26 kWh, respectively). In contrast, the production of electrical and thermal energy in Mexicali exhibited considerably greater fluctuations (515.16 kWh to 177.69 kWh and 1424.39 kWh to 448.88 kWh, respectively). Furthermore, a parametric study is presented, which analyzes the impact of solar receiver geometry and mass flow on the model's behavior. The results demonstrate that the pipe length exerts the most significant influence on the electrical and thermal power output (1.21 kW to 2.22 kW and 3.7 kW to 6.9 kW, respectively). Additionally, the diameter has an impact on the thermal power output (5.23 kW to 7.1 kW) and the electrical and thermal efficiency (0.18 to 0.15 and 0.54 to 0.74, respectively). Modifying the mass flow facilitates the enhancement of electrical power and efficiency (1.54 kW to 1.72 kW and 0.16 to 0.18, respectively) while concurrently preventing a significant reduction in thermal power and efficiency (5.4 kW to 5.3 kW and 0.56 to 0.55, respectively). Abstract

In this work, we develop a new framework to deal numerically with discontinuous solutions in nonconservative hyperbolic systems. First an extension of the MOOD methodology to nonconservative systems based on Taylor expansions is presented. This extension combined with an in‐cell discontinuous reconstruction operator are the key points to develop a new family of high‐order methods that are able to capture exactly isolated shocks. Several test cases are proposed to validate these methods for the Modified Shallow Water equations and the Two‐Layer Shallow Water system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

El turismo es un sector para considerar en el desarrollo de cualquier país, pues en todos los territorios existen recursos importantes, tanto económicos, humanos, institucionales como culturales, que pudieran ser utilizados racionalmente a favor del desarrollo turístico sostenible, partiendo de las diversas iniciativas locales que generan grandes oportunidades y formas de crecimiento económico. Es objetivo de este artículo valorar la oferta turística rural en Ecuador y su redimensionamiento durante el período pospandémico. Durante el proceso investigativo se aplicaron métodos y técnicas tales como análisis documental, análisis histórico-lógico y analítico-sintético. También el cálculo porcentual, tablas y gráficos. Como principales hallazgos se pueden citar: La demanda turística en el Ecuador, en estos momentos acentúa su interés a lo rural, y vivencial; la oferta turística rural debe ser auténtica y diversa, vinculando modernidad y tecnología; el turismo rural requiere la integración de todos los factores políticos, económicos y sociales, para alcanzar el éxito y generar beneficios comunes. En conclusión, este artículo corroboró que el turismo rural es un nicho de mercado de alto impacto para diversificar la economía ecuatoriana, restablecer los flujos turísticos, la preservación de las comunidades autóctonas y su cultura, toda vez, que se garantiza la protección de los ecosistemas existentes.

[ES] El proyecto de final de máster Sensibilidad Digital es una instalación artística transmedia que busca el diálogo entre lo digital y lo analógico. Una reflexión sobre la relación de la persona con el objeto inerte, sobre dar vida al mismo a través de la empatía y finalmente enlaza estos conceptos con la perspectiva de la producción artística como acto lúdico. Esta reflexión se pone en marcha a través de una máquina de coser intervenida en la que se juega a un videojuego, junto a un baúl contenedor de objetos físicos que interactúan tanto narrativa como sensorialmente en el propio juego. Para ello, la obra hace uso simbólico, práctico y plástico de la animación, el libro de artista, la estampa, la música y la escultura para ello., [EN] This project involves a transmedia artistic installation that aims to facilitate a conversation between the digital and the analog. It reflects on the relationship between individuals and lifeless objects, exploring the idea of bringing these objects to life through empathy. Ultimately, it connects these concepts with the perspective of artistic production as a playful act. This exploration takes place through a modified sewing machine used as an interface for a video game, accompanied by a trunk containing physical objects that interact both narratively and sensorially within the game. Symbolic, practical, and artistic elements like animation, artist books, prints, music, and sculpture are used to enhance this reflective narrative.

39. Emerging, Non-PCV13 Serotypes 11A and 35B of Streptococcus pneumoniae Show High Potential for Biofilm Formation In Vitro

Abstract

Since the use of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines PCV7 and PCV13 in children became widespread, invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) has dramatically decreased. Nevertheless, there has been a rise in incidence of Streptococcus pneumoniae non-vaccine serotypes (NVT) colonising the human nasopharynx. Nasopharyngeal colonisation, an essential step in the development of S. pneumoniae-induced IPD, is associated with biofilm formation. Although the capsule is the main pneumococcal virulence factor, the formation of pneumococcal biofilms might, in fact, be limited by the presence of capsular polysaccharide (CPS). Methodology/Principal Findings We used clinical isolates of 16 emerging, non-PCV13 serotypes as well as isogenic transformants of the same serotypes. The biofilm formation capacity of isogenic transformants expressing CPSs from NVT was evaluated in vitro to ascertain whether this trait can be used to predict the emergence of NVT. Fourteen out of 16 NVT analysed were not good biofilm formers, presumably because of the presence of CPS. In contrast, serotypes 11A and 35B formed ≥45% of the biofilm produced by the non-encapsulated M11 strain. Conclusions/Significance This study suggest that emerging, NVT serotypes 11A and 35B deserve a close surveillance. Abstract

Vancomycin, a glycopeptide antimicrobial agent, represents the last line of defence against a wide range of multi-resistant Gram-positive pathogens such as enterococci, staphylococci and streptococci. However, vancomycin-resistant enterococci and staphylococci, along with vancomycin-tolerant clinical isolates, are compromising the therapeutic efficacy of vancomycin. It is conceivable that tolerance may emerge during prolonged vancomycin use. It has not been until recently, however, that the molecular basis of this tolerance began to be understood. Superoxide anions might be involved in the bactericidal activity of vancomycin in enterococci, and recent evidence suggests that the stringent response is partly responsible for vancomycin tolerance in Enterococcus faecalis. The mechanism of vancomycin tolerance in Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae is sometimes associated with a reduction of autolysin activity. 41. In vitro biofilm development of Streptococcus pneumoniae and formation of choline‐binding protein-DNA complexes

Abstract

Extracellular deoxyribonucleic acid (eDNA) is an essential component of bacterial biofilm matrices, and is required in their formation and maintenance. Extracellular DNA binds to exopolysaccharides or extracellular proteins, affording biofilms greater structural integrity. Recently, we reported evidence of intercellular eDNA−LytC complexes in pneumococcal biofilms. The LytC lysozyme is a member of the choline-binding family of proteins (CBPs) located on the pneumococcal surface. The present work shows that other CBPs, i.e. LytA, LytB, Pce, PspC and CbpF, which have a pI between 5 and 6, can bind DNA in vitro. This process requires the presence of divalent cations other than Mg2+. This DNA binding capacity of CBPs appears to be independent of their enzymatic activity and, at least in the case of LytA, does not require the choline-binding domain characteristic of CBPs. Positively charged, surface-exposed, 25 amino acid-long peptides derived from the catalytic domain of LytB, were also found capable of DNA binding through electrostatic interactions. Confocal laser scanning microcopy revealed the existence of cell-associated LytB−eDNA complexes in Streptococcus pneumoniae biofilms. 43. Two putative glutamate decarboxylases of Streptococcus pneumoniae as possible antigens for the production of anti-GAD65 antibodies leading to type 1 diabetes mellitus

Abstract

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) has been increasing in prevalence in the last decades and has become a global burden. Autoantibodies against human glutamate decarboxylase (GAD65) are among the first to be detected at the onset of T1DM. Diverse viruses have been proposed to be involved in the triggering of T1DM because of molecular mimicry, i.e., similarity between parts of some viral proteins and one or more epitopes of GAD65. However, the possibility that bacterial proteins might also be responsible for GAD65 mimicry has been seldom investigated. To date, many genomes of Streptococcus pneumoniae (the pneumococcus), a prominent human pathogen particularly prevalent among children and the elderly, have been sequenced. A dataset of more than 9000 pneumococcal genomes was mined and two different (albeit related) genes (gadA and gadB), presumably encoding two glutamate decarboxylases similar to GAD65, were found. The various gadASpn alleles were present only in serotype 3 pneumococci belonging to the global lineage GPSC83, although some homologs have also been discovered in two subspecies of Streptococcus constellatus (pharyngis and viborgensis), an isolate of the group B streptococci, and several strains of Lactobacillus delbrueckii. Besides, gadBSpn alleles are present in > 10% of the isolates in our dataset and represent 16 GPSCs with 123 sequence types and 20 different serotypes. Sequence analyses indicated that gadA- and gadB-like genes have been mobilized among different bacteria either by prophage(s) or by integrative and conjugative element(s), respectively. Substantial similarities appear to exist between the putative pneumococcal glutamate decarboxylases and well-known epitopes of GAD65. In this sense, the use of broader pneumococcal conjugate vaccines such as PCV20 would prevent the majority of serotypes expressing those genes that might potentially contribute to T1DM. Abstract

Soldiers of the Mexican Army with obesity were subjected to an intense 60-day weight-loss course consisting of a controlled diet, daily physical training, and psychological sessions. The nutritional treatment followed the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) recommendations, incorporating elements of the traditional milpa diet in the nutritional intervention. The total energy intake was reduced by 200 kcal every 20 days, starting with 1,800 kcal and ending with 1,400 kcal daily. On average, the participants reduced their body weight by 18 kg. We employed an innovative approach to monitor the progress of the twelve soldiers who completed the entire program. We compared the untargeted metabolomics profiles of their urine samples, taken before and after the course. The data obtained through liquid chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-MS) provided insightful results. Classification models perfectly separated the profiles pre and post-course, indicating a significant reprogramming of the participants' metabolism. The changes were observed in the C1-, vitamin, amino acid, and energy metabolism pathways, primarily affecting the liver, biliary system, and mitochondria. This study not only demonstrates the potential of rapid weight loss and metabolic pathway modification but also introduces a non-invasive method for monitoring the metabolic state of individuals through urine mass spectrometry data.
