The Caatinga, an exclusive biome in Brazil, is the largest tropical dry forest area in the Americas. It is characterized by a semi-arid climate and various soils that harbor a great diversity of flora and fauna. Novel records of aerial insectivorous bat species in the family Molossidae in the Chapada Diamantina, northeastern Brazil are presented. The study is based on field sampling of 115 molossid bat specimens from six genera and 12 taxonomically confirmed species, along with four taxa requiring further evaluation for definitive species identification. All specimens were obtained using mist nets around a small freshwater lagoon surrounded by semideciduous dry forest. The verified genera were Cynomops, Eumops, Molossops, Molossus, Neoplatymops, and Nyctinomops. Our findings enhance the understanding of bat diversity in the Brazilian Caatinga, with the first records of Eumops delticus, E. bonariensis, and Molossus currentium. The most abundant species were Molossus rufus, Eumops glaucinus, Cynomops planirostris, Nyctinomops laticaudatus, and Molossus molossus. Previously unreported morphological and morphometric variations for these Caatinga taxa were examined. Additionally, information on sexual dimorphism in craniodental characteristics of Molossops temminckii and variations in the presence of the sagittal crest in Neoplatymops mattogrossensis are provided. Based on the voucher specimens from this study, the recognized number of species of Molossidae known from the Caatinga has increased to 21. Our results offer new insights into the taxonomy and biogeography of Neotropical molossids, highlighting their importance as members of bat communities in dry forest ecosystems from northeastern South America. Rodents of the genus Hylaeamys, are a group of cryptic species previously included in the Oryzomys capito complex. In Brazil are represented by six species, distributed in different biomes. However, the limits of their geographic distributions and taxonomy have not yet been well defined. In particular, the taxonomy for Hylaeamys seuanezi is unstable. Based on the analysis of bony structures and supported with geometric morphometric techniques, we characterize and compare the average shape from populations in four localities from Southern Bahia, Brazil. We review 145 individuals and we create morphological landmarks in skulls, mandibles, scapulae, and pelvis. In all the structures there were statistically significant differences between populations, in which the average shape from the Igrapiúna population was the most differentiated. Our results also showed differences between the pelvis of males and females, reporting for the first time sexual dimorphism for H. seuanezi. Finally, we provide a morphological diagnosis between the populations and postulate that such differences may be correlated with environmental and climatic factors that could be exerting negative pressures on H. seuanezi; as has been evidenced with other species of rodents and other mammals. - Abstract

In Venezuela, the protected areas constitute for bats the only strategy of conservation. However, their effectiveness in terms of representativeness is unknown. This work was focused in to compile the information on bats from the strictly protected areas from Venezuela (national parks, natural monuments, and wildlife refuges). We made a revision both from literature (including unpublished literature) as well as from national and international museums. At least 89% (n=152) of bats from Venezuela are represented in the evaluated areas. These areas are protecting two from three endemic species. The System de colinas Lara-Falcón and the Cordillera Central are the bioregions more diverse (96 and 95% respectively); in addition, these areas have the most richness by protected surface unit (0.101 and 0.007/Km2 respectively). The following strictly protected areas were the richest in species composition: Henri Pittier, Canaima, Serranía La Neblina. These results can be linked with the geomorphology and extension from every area, as well as sampling efforts. Finally SPA not are protecting those species with conservation critical levels (Lonchorhina fernandezi). It is alarming the current status of L. fernandezi categorized as “Endangered” and only known from a colony in northern Amazonas. 28-42 marianadelgado13@yahoo.es mmachado3@uc.edu.ve

The genus Thyroptera is composed of small insectivorous bats widely distributed in the Neotropics. Thyroptera lavali is an Amazonian species distributed in lowland rainforests of Peru, Ecuador and Brazil and in the Venezuelan Eastern Llanos. The goal of this study was to document new records of T. lavali for Venezuela and update the geographic distribution of Thyroptera species in that country. Based on specimens deposited in Venezuelan museums, we report the first record of T. lavali for the Guiana Shield and the second record for the Venezuelan Llanos. The external and cranial measurements of the analyzed specimens fall within the range previously reported for T. lavali; likewise, the qualitative characters are similar to what is known for the species. Additionally, derived from a search of records in databases, we report the first specimens of Thyroptera discifera for the Orinoco river basin. We confirm the presence of three species in Venezuela: T. discifera, distributed in the Cordillera de la Costa and Central and Western Llanos; Thryoptera tricolor, occurring in the Andes, Deltaic System and the Guiana Shield and T. lavali, recorded in the Eastern Llanos, Deltaic System and the Guiana Shield. Neotropical bats reflect a nocturnal-twilight activity rhythm, passing daytime hours in their roosts that provide them protection and favorable microclimatic conditions. Objective: We document the nocturnal and spatial activity of some species of frugivorous bats from Yurubí National Park, Venezuela. Methodology: The field work was carried out during six months (February-June, and August), 2015. We used 10 mist nets, placed between understory (0-5 meters high) and canopy (10-20 meters high). Each individual was taxonomically identified and a series of data related to time and catch stratum were recorded. Results: We captured 370 individuals, belonging to 22 species and five subfamilies. The activity for most abundant species was divided into two patterns (bimodal and unimodal). Species Artibeus planirostris, Platyrrhinus umbratus, and Sturnira adrianae, exhibited the bimodal pattern, with a maximum activity in the first two species for the first block of hours (18:00-20:59), and the fourth (03:00-05:59). In S. adrianae, the activity was concentrated for the second (21:00-23:59), and the last block (03:00-05:59). In contrast, individuals of Artibeus lituratus, Carollia perspicillata, Carollia brevicauda, and Vampyressa thyone, showed the unimodal pattern, with a maximum activity in the second block (21:00-23:59) and for V. thyone in the third (00:00-02:59). Conclusion: The seven species of bats studied performed a fluctuating temporal activity throughout the night, concentrating the maximum activity for some hours and varying between species. As for the spatial activity, although there were no statistically significant differences, apparently the species with greater corporal masses (A. lituratus, A. planirostris, and P. umbratus), showed a certain tendency to use the upper stratum of the forest to undoubtedly develop their vital activities, mainly the search and acquisition of food., Los murciélagos neotropicales re ejan un ritmo de actividad nocturno-crepuscular, pasando las horas diurnas en refugios que les ofrecen protección y condiciones microclimáticas favorables.

We studied the population dynamics and reproduction of a colony of Pteronotus parnellii and Anoura geoffroyi (Order Chiroptera) associated with a cave from Yurubí National Park, Yaracuy State, Venezuela. The field work consisted of one nightly visit each month for a year (February 2013-January 2014). A harp trap was placed at entrance of the cave. We recorded a series of data for all individuals, which were marked and released in the area. We captured 1408 individuals of these two species with a total effort of 36 trap-night hours. We identified 871 individuals as P. parnellii and 537 as A. geoffroyi. For P. parnellii, we recorded 452 males and 419 females (all adults). In contrast, of 537 captured individuals of A. geoffroyi, 172 were males and 365 females (each a mix of adults and juveniles). The abundances, sex ratios and age classes for each species were associated with seasonal patterns of precipitation in the area. Both taxa showed a seasonal monoestrous pattern, with pregnant lactating females present from May-July for P. parnellii and from July-November for A. geoffroyi. 27-37 cormura@gmail.com dayanacaraujo@yahoo.com mmachado3@uc.edu.ve

For bats, caves represent an important resource within forests because they offer protection and favorable microclimatic conditions for reproduction, especially for cave-dwelling bats. Over 12 months (2013-2014), we studied a cave used by bats in an evergreen forest in the Yurubí National Park-Sierra de Aroa, Yaracuy State, Venezuela. For one night each month, we placed one harp trap in the entrance to the cave and activated it before the bats emerged from the cave. We captured six species from the families Mormoopidae and Phyllostomidae. Pteronotus parnellii, Anoura geoffroyi and Carollia perspicillata were recorded in every month, occasionally with signs of reproductive activity for some individuals. In every month, P. parnellii and A. geoffroyi showed the highest number of individuals. On the other hand, Phyllostomus hastatus, Lonchorhina aurita and Desmodus rotundus used the roost only in some months, without any evidence of reproductive activity. Overall, in the cave there were substantial changes in species composition and size of the colonies over time, indicating that it was a permanent roost for some species (which might use it for reproduction) but only an occasional shelter for other species.

- Abstract
Based on presence or absence of species, we evaluated the richness of three orders of non-volant small mammals (Didelphimorphia, Paucituberculata and Eulipotyphla) in the strictly protected areas from Venezuela (national parks, natural monuments and wildlife refuges). We reviewed both the literature (including theses and technical reports) as well as databases from national and international museums and then, made taxonomic lists of every strictly protected area. At least 85% of the species grouped in the three orders were recorded in the evaluated areas. These areas are protecting 80% of the endangered species and all endemic species. However, there is a gap in the protection of some species restricted to particular bioregions or known from few records. The following strictly protected areas are considered the richest in terms of numbers of species: Canaima, Duida- Marahuaca and Yurubí. Just as has been suggested in similar studies, it is believed necessary to review in more detail the "Plan de Ordenamiento Territorial de Venezuela" to identify possible areas that function as biological corridors and create new protected areas that include those species not protected in the current system. - Abstract
Bats represent a key component in the dynamics of many terrestrial ecosystems, and one of the groups of mammals with the highest levels of diversification in the Neotropics. Here we describe the results of a study of the bat fauna from Yurubí National Park (mountain area in Northern Venezuela), that includes a taxonomic list and the characterization of some community attributes in forested areas. Data was collected from zoological collections and diversified sampling methods from February to July of 2009 in an altitudinal gradient (100-1 500m), with three principal ecological units: semideciduous, evergreen and cloud forests. We recorded 64 species grouped in five families (63% of the bats known from La Cordillera de la Costa), of which Phyllostomidae was the dominant taxa (42 species; 66% of total), followed by Vespertilionidae, Molossidae, Emballonuridae and Mormoopidae. The community with the highest taxonomic diversification was found in the lowest elevation range, while the lowest number of species was found at the highest range. Eleven trophic guilds were identified; the insectivorous guild was the richest, whereas the frugivorous was the most abundant. Our results allow us to indicate these forest ecosystems have an appropriate conservation status, taking into account the presence of a relatively high proportion of species from the subfamily Phyllostominae, as well as the presence of other species with conservation priorities. All these aspects, and the fact that this represents a reservoir of the biological diversity of the forest ecosystems of La Cordillera de la Costa, make this protected area of an essential conservation value, in a highly endangered bioregion by neighboring socio-economic growth.
