A detailed knowledge of the endemic plant species in the Pyrenees benefits both conservation policy and ecological research. Here we describe the spatial distribution patterns and floristic and ecological aspects of the updated list of Pyrenean endemisms after the on line edition of the Atlas of vascular flora of the Pyrenees. A total of 88 unambiguous endemic plant species have been recorded in the Pyrenees (excluding apomictic and other non-clear taxa), which represents the 2.4% of its total native flora. They belong to 27 families, and are geographically concentrated in the central part of the chain. Pyrenean endemics present a narrower distribution and grow at higher altitude than non-endemics, but do not present spatial distribution breaks along the mountain chain. The distribution of the endemic taxa also indicates that East-West dispersal is more limited than the North-South, despite the altitudinal barrier. Endemisms are mostly chamaephytes and are overrepresented in calcicolous rocky habitats. Overall, these results indicate that the isolation of the Pyrenees during the glacial cycles might have been moderate, and serve as a starting point for further integrative investigations. El conocimiento detallado de los endemismos pirenaicos resulta de gran utilidad en la adopción de medidas de conservación y en la investigación de patrones ecológicos de la flora. Describimos la distribución espacial y distintos aspectos florísticos y ecológicos de la lista revisada de endemismos pirenaicos tras la edición digital del “Atlas de flora vascular de los Pirineos”. Las 88 especies endémicas genuinas representan el 2,4% del conjunto de la flora pirenaica, se incluyen en 27 familias taxonómicas y se concentran en la parte central de la cadena. Los endemismos estudiados presentan notables diferencias ecológicas respecto al conjunto de la flora, en términos de una distribución territorial más reducida y localización en altitudes más elevadas, pero no presentan una distribución fragmentada en el conjunto de los Pirineos. Su distribución también indica que la dispersión Este-Oeste es más limitada que la Norte-Sur, a pesar de la barrera altitudinal del eje de la cordillera. Los endemismos son mayoritariamente caméfitos y están más representados en los hábitats rocosos calizos. En conjunto, estos resultados indican que el aislamiento durante las glaciaciones puede haber sido moderado y sirven como punto de partida para futuras investigaciones.

The recent digital edition of the Atlas of Pyrenean vascular flora, allow us to analyze some patterns of geographical distribution and environmental features of the most rare plant species. The aim of our study is to contribute to the knowledge of rarity and to the planning and implementation of plant conservation at a Pyrenean scale. Among the 363 selected taxa after applying the criteria of low occupancy (10% of the whole Pyrenean flora), 352 are present in less of the 2% of the territory and 11 occupy less than 4% distributed over a scarce number of populations (less than 30). Using a net of 10 x 10 Km UTM’s squares, rare plants appear represented in the 65% of the territory; the regions with highest rare plant density overlap those with the highest total plant number. The areas with the richest rare plants are placed at the East and West extremes (beside the Cap de Creus and at between San Sebastian and Irun respectively), at the center of the French National Park of the Pyrenees and the surroundings of the Spanish Monte Perdido area. Rare flora significantly differs from the whole flora in terms of taxonomic representation, altitudinal amplitude and distribution, chorology, life-forms, edaphic preference and habitats, but not in the naturalness of the habitats where they occur. La reciente edición en línea del Atlas digital de Flora vascular de los Pirineos permite analizar algunos patrones de la distribución y las preferencias ambientales de las plantas más raras, con el fin de contribuir a la caracterización de la rareza y al diseño de estrategias de conservación de la diversidad florística en la cordillera. Entre los 363 taxones seleccionados por su escasa representación (el 10% del total de la flora) 352 se distribuyen en menos del 2% del territorio y 11 ocupan un área inferior al 4%, pero tienen menos de 30 de poblaciones en todo el territorio. La flora rara se distribuye en el 65% de los Pirineos (utilizando para esta estima una malla de cuadrículas UTM de 10 Km de lado), y las regiones con más abundancia de plantas raras coinciden con las que tienen mayor diversidad florística total. Las zonas con mayor densidad de plantas raras se sitúan en el extremo oriental (junto al Cap de Creus), el noroccidental (entre San Sebastián e Irún) y en el centro del Parc National des Pyrénées y los alrededores de Monte Perdido. La flora rara se muestra significativamente diferente del conjunto de la flora en su representación taxonómica, distribución y amplitud altitudinal, corología, formas biológicas, preferencia edáfica y hábitats, pero no en el grado de naturalidad de los hábitats.

El objetivo de este artículo es describir las particularidades, en el niño que realiza un viaje internacional, de los consejos generales y las recomendaciones de vacunación y prevención de la malaria; se pretende prevenir no solo las enfermedades infecciosas, sino también las no infecciosas. The World Tourism Organization estimates that in 2013 tourism will continue growing and that in 2020 there will be 1.6 billion international trips taken. In 2011, there were 13.3 million trips taken abroad in Spain. There are very few figures for the number of international trips taken by Spanish children, but it is known that they form about 10% of travellers, a similar percentage to that found in US studies. Furthermore, during the last decade the immigrant population of Spain has grown, increasing the number of families returning to their home country to visit friends and relations. Although children make up a significant proportion of international travellers there is little information on pre-travel medicine for this group. The aim of this article is to describe the particularities of general advice, vaccination recommendations and malaria prevention for child international travellers, with the purpose of both infectious and non-infectious disease prevention.

Sugarcane is known for its highly complex genetics and more knowledge is needed for better use and conservation of genetic materials. In order to identify genotypes and to assess genetic diversity, diverse data sets such as morphological and molecular markers are used as a general approach. To evaluate the usefulness of different markers, important sugarcane genotypes in Argentina were characterized by AFLP, SSR and morphological traits. All genotypes characterized were grouped in one main cluster in dendrograms using two independent softwares. Inter- estingly, local genotypes grouped together with USA varieties and no clear genetic differentiation could be found probably due to intensive germplasm exchange between these breeding programs. The molecular markers tested were useful for genetic diversity assessment as well as for genotype identification. These markers should be included in the internationally established characters for sugarcane variety protection as they give a better view on whole genome complexity.Additionally, genetic similarities obtained from molecular markers will provide more accurate information to breeders than the pedigree method, especially when considering the asymmetric genetic inheritance of sugarcane. Morphological traits are valuable tools to identify genotypes since they reflect external resemblance more than genetic relatedness. When they were combined withmolecularmarkers the dendogram obtained revealed genetic relationships and the genetic diversity was better estimated. In summary, both methods appear to be useful, complementing each other and should be used together to assist sugarcane breeders in estimating genetic diversity, electing parents for crossings, identifying superior lines and to protect intellectual property rights. Cliff sides are extreme habitats, often sheltering a rich and unique flora. One example is the dioecious herb Bordereachouardii (Dioscoreaceae), which is a Tertiary, tropical relict, occurring only on two adjacent vertical cliffs in the world. Westudied its reproductive biology, which in some aspects is extreme, especially the unusual double mutualistic role of ants asboth pollinators and dispersers. We made a 2-year pollination census and four years of seed-dispersal experiments,recording flower visitors and dispersal rates. Fruit and seed set, self-sowing of seeds, seedling recruitment, and fate ofseedlings from seeds sowed by different agents were scored over a period of 17 years. The ants Lasius grandis and L.cinereus were the main pollinators, whereas another ant Pheidole pallidula dispersed seeds. Thus ants functioned as doublemutualists. Two thirds of all new seedlings came from self-sown seeds, and 1/3 was dispersed by ants, which gathered theseeds with their oil-rich elaiosome. Gravity played a minor role to dispersal. Both ant dispersal and self-sowing resulted inthe same survival rate of seedlings. A double mutualism is a risky reproductive strategy, but B. chouardii buffers that by anunusual long–term demographic stability (some individuals exceed 300 years in lifespan) and its presence in a climaticallyvery stable habitat, inaccessible to large herbivores. Such a combination of traits and habitat properties may explain thepersistence of this relict species.

Teachers as well as trainee teachers have conceptions of teaching and learning that do not correspond to the learning theories studied within the university course programs. The predominating ideas in this paradigmatic context, which are based upon the fact that subjects understand an action scenario, posses an implicit character and differ from the notion that they are expressed explicitly most of times. The objective of this article is to introduce the adaption and validation of an instrument designed to research on the conceptions of trainee teachers of the School of Humanities as well as the School of Exact and Natural Sciences of the National University of Mar del Plata (Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata) in Argentina about learning. Also, it intends to conduct a first analysis of the results obtained after it has been administered. The instrument is an adaption of a dilemma questionnaire designed by Martín, Mateos, Pérez-Echeverría, Pozo, Pecharromán, Martínez, and Villalón, which they administered to 120 students. Cronbach’s Alpha was used to determine factor analysis reliability, and consequently construct validity. The following data analysis shows the application of the interpretative theory of learning based on an epistemological conception related to critical realism.

Variation in some floral traits of Pinguicula longifolia subsp. longifolia, a chasmophilous endemism of central Pyrenees, is examined. The especies shows a considerable intra and interpoblational phenotypic variability for all traits studied (peduncle, spur and lower lip corolla length), and floral differences between populations are not associated with their geographical distances. Ecological and historical factors seems to be more important to understand their restricted distribution than genetic or reproductive ones., [es] En el presente trabajo se examina la variabilidad de algunos caracteres florales en un endemismo casmófito del Pirineo central: Pinguicula longifolia subsp. longifolia. La especie presenta una notable variabilidad fenotípica intra e interpoblacional para los tres caracteres examinados (longitud del pedúnculo, del espolón y del labio Inferior de la corola), y las diferencias entre poblaciones no están relacionadas con las distancias geográficas que las separan. Los factores ecológicos e históricos deben ser más responsables de su restringida distribución actual que los de tipo genético o reproductivo. [fr] Dans ce travail, nous étudions la variabilité de quelques caractères floraux d'une plante endémique rupicole des Pyrénées centrales: Pinguicula longifolia subsp. longifolia. Pour les trois caractères examinés (longueur du pédoncule floral, du éperon et du lèvre Inférieur de la corolle), cette espèce montre une variabilité phénotypique entre populations et dans chaque population; d'ailleurs, les différences entre les populations ne sont pas en rapport avec les distances géographiques qui les séparent. Les facteurs écologiques et historiques semblent mieux expliquer sa repart très restreinte que d'autres facteurs génétiques ou reproductifs.
