The main outcome measures were refractive error, monocular corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), monocular uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), photopic and mesopic contrast sensitivity, and wavefront aberrations. Patients were asked to complete the Catquest-9SF questionnaire.Results: At 3 months, the cumulative Snellen visual acuity was 20/20 in 94.55% of eyes and 20/25 or better in 100%. The difference between the UDVA and CDVA was either the same (70.91%) or better (29.09%) in all eyes. The mean Snellen decimal UDVA and DCVA were 1.07 ± 0.15 and 1.13 ± 0.11, respectively. The safety and efficacy indexes were 1.48 and 1.40, respectively. 47.27% of eyes showed a spherical equivalent ± 0.13 D, with 92.73% of the eyes were within ± 0.50 D and all eyes were within ± 1.00 D. The mean spherical equivalent was − 0.03 ± 0.30 D and the mean refractive cylinder − 0.36 ± 0.34 D. The log photopic and mesopic contrast sensitivity functions were good and similar for all spatial frequencies. All patients reported being either fairly satisfied (score 3) or very satisfied (score 4) with their vision (mean = 3.64 ± 0.49). No intra- and postoperative complications were reported during the 3 months of follow-up.Conclusion: The current study demonstrates that excellent visual and refractive outcomes, as well as patient satisfaction, can be achieved after cataract surgery with optimized, aspheric CT LUCIA 621P monofocal IOLs.Keywords: cataract, intraocular lens, aspheric, aberrations, contrast sensitivity, phacoemulsification

En los 60 se inicia el Programa de Comedores Escolares, que desde el período democrático, forma parte de la organización estatal y de las políticas de asistencia social alimentaria en Argentina. Si bien estos programas tienen un carácter intervencionista, los criterios y antecedentes socio-económicos sobre los cuales se basan son escasos y prácticamente desconocida la participación y la información de la antropometría, sobre todo en la asistencia alimentaria escolar. Exploratoriamente, se analizan las características antropométricas de alumnos de escuelas públicas y privadas de San Salvador de Jujuy, pesados y medidos en el Departamento de Salud Escolar entre 1995-2000, los cuales se agruparon en 3 subconjuntos de acuerdo al tipo de escuela: a) con asistencia alimentaria (N = 10.937), b) sin asistencia alimentaria (N = 18.874); c) privadas (N = 5.680). En ambos sexos, se verificaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas (ANOVA) para peso y talla, entre los 3 subconjuntos, resultando más pesados y altos los alumnos de las escuelas privadas, seguidos por los de las escuelas sin asistencia alimentaria y por último los de las escuelas con asistencia alimentaria. Pese a las diferencias entre subconjuntos, las características antropométricas de cada uno de ellos y de la población escolar como un conjunto, no indicarían un estado nutricional y sanitario alarmante. Los hallazgos no permiten ponderar la magnitud y calidad de la intervención nutricional alimentaria en las escuelas jujeñas, pero aportan información de base sobre un aspecto sustancial y descuidado de los planes sociales alimentarios a nivel local.

Non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs) are energetic compounds that can be accumulated in tissues and mobilized during periods of unfavorable conditions to maintain the biological functions of plants. The balance of these biochemical compounds is controlled by environmental factors such as temperature and irradiance. Zostera noltei and Zostera marina find one of their southern distribution limits in southern Spain, where relatively high seawater temperatures are reached during summer (23–24 °C). To better understand the effects of elevated temperatures on the concentration of NSCs, we conducted a seasonal study at Cadiz Bay, representing warm-adapted populations of these species. Our results showed a bimodal pattern in both species, with the highest NSC content observed in December and June, followed by a depletion in March and August. In addition, the NSC content observed in the leaves of Z. noltei (71.26 ± 30.77 mg g−1 dry weight) was higher than in the rhizomes and roots (52.14 ± 38.86 mg g−1 DW). The observed patterns suggest that these species accumulated NSCs to cope with periods of unfavorable environmental conditions. We also suggest that the limited concentration of NSCs in Z. noltei rhizomes and roots indicates that this population may be suffering physiological stress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To evaluate food losses (FL) volumes generated by farms in Baja California Peninsula, México, of five agricultural commodities. Design/methodology/approach: Baja California Sur (BCS) state was the study area. Information was gathered from a total of 380 sampled chain actors in asparagus, mango, strawberry, orange and tomato by survey and personal interviews. Tobit technique was applied to identify factors that influence FL percentage. Results: Data shows about 11.8% of asparagus is lost during harvesting and distribution, as well as 8.5% of strawberry, 26% of mango, 17.8% of oranges and 3.5% of tomatoes, representing 29.9% loss rate of marketed yield. Limitations on study/implications: This study did not classify commodities in the last steps of the supply chain. The five commodities used in the current study correspond to the more important agricultural produces in BCS, but given changing market, harvesting time and produce availability did not consider the waste of the supply chain. Findings/conclusions: Commodity, type of transportation and distribution, education, and human resources has been identified as influence factors in the volume of FL. This exploratory study fills the void in information in terms of its geographic scope and food group number, and farm owners willing to manage food losses for the purpose of obtaining bioactive compound.
