Bryophytes desiccate rapidly when relative humidity decreases. The capacity to withstand dehydration depends on several ecological and physiological factors. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) may have a role in enhancing tolerance to desiccating bryophytes. However, the functions of VOCs in bryophytes have received little attention so far. We aimed to investigate the impact of a dehydration‐rehydration treatment on primary carbon metabolism and volatile terpenes (VTs) in three bryophytes with contrasting ecological traits: Vessicularia dubyana, Porella platyphylla and Pleurochaete squarrosa. First, we confirmed the desiccation sensitivity gradient of the species. Under fully hydrated conditions, the photosynthetic rate (A) was inversely associated with stress tolerance, with a lower rate in more tolerant species. The partial recovery of A in P. platyphylla and P. squarrosa after rehydration confirmed the desiccation tolerance of these two species. On the other hand, A did not recover after rehydration in V. dubyana. Regarding VT, each species exhibited a distinct VT profile under optimum hydration, with the highest VT pool found in the more desiccation‐sensitive species (V. dubyana). However, the observed species‐specific VT pattern could be associated with the ecological habitat of each species. P. squarrosa, a moss of dry habitats, may synthesize mainly non‐volatile secondary metabolites as stress‐defensive compounds. On the other hand, V. dubyana, commonly found submerged, may need to invest photosynthetically assimilated carbon to synthesize a higher amount of VTs to cope with transient water stress occurrence. Antarctic macroalgal communities of the upper intertidal zone are particularly poor compared with other coastal regions. Exposure to desiccation and freezing combined with the abrasive effect of ice threatens the life of sessile organisms. One of the few species able to colonize this environment is the rhodophyte Pyropia endiviifolia. It belongs to the Bangiales, one of the oldest extant clades of photosynthetic eukaryotes, which has occurred for more than one billion years with basically the same morphological structure. Considering that the extent of Antarctic glaciation is a geologically recent event, we hypothesized that pre-adaptations to desiccation in bangiophytes may have contributed to the success of P. endiviifolia in Antarctica. To test this, we compared its photosynthetic performance and tolerance to desiccation and freezing with those from a related intertidal species, the temperate Atlantic species Porphyra linearis. As evidenced by gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence, P. endiviifolia is more adapted to high irradiances than P. linearis. The former species was also more desiccation-tolerant, and showed a higher glass transition temperature. Both species did not differ in chlorophyll content per dry weight, and tolerance to −20°C, even though the ice-nucleation temperature was much higher in P. endiviifolia. Membrane integrity may depend on fatty acid composition in P. endiviifolia, while on enhanced tocopherol in P. linearis. Overall, both species show different strategies to deal with freezing temperatures: supercooling in P. linearis vs. freezing-tolerance in P. endiviifolia. This matches with the probability of being subjected to sub-zero temperatures in their natural environments (lower in the case of P. linearis). Surprisingly, the higher risk of dehydration in the natural habitat of P. linearis is not matched by a higher desiccation tolerance. This observation does not support the initial hypothesis of the study but suggests the opposite: the acclimation to a cold environment results in higher desiccation tolerance. Dehesas, human-shaped savannah-like ecosystems, where the overstorey is mainly dominated by the evergreen holm oak (Quercus ilex L. subsp. ballota (Desf.) Samp.), are classified as a global conservation priority. Despite being Q. ilex a species adapted to the harsh Mediterranean environmental conditions, recent decades have witnessed worrisome trends of climate-change-induced holm oak mortality. Holm oak decline is evidenced by tree vigour loss, gradual defoliation and ultimately, death. However, before losing leaves, trees undergo leaf-level physiological adjustments in response to stress that may represent a promising field to develop biochemical early markers of holm oak decline. This study explored holm oak photoprotective responses (pigments, tocopherols and photosynthetic performance) in 144 mature holm oak trees with different health statuses (i.e. crown defoliation percentages) from healthy to first-stage declining individuals. Our results indicate differential photochemical performance and photoprotective compounds concentration depending on the trees' health status. Declining trees showed higher energy dissipation yield, lower photochemical efficiency and enhanced photoprotective compounds. In the case of total violaxanthin cycle pigments (VAZ) and tocopherols, shifts in leaf contents were significant at very early stages of crown defoliation, even before visual symptoms of decline were evident, supporting the value of these biochemical compounds as early stress markers. Linear mixed-effects models results showed an acute response, both in the photosynthesis performance index and in the concentration of foliar tocopherols, during the onset of tree decline, whereas VAZ showed a more gradual response along the defoliation gradient of the crown. These results collectively demonstrate that once a certain threshold of leaf physiological damage is surpassed, that leaf cannot counteract oxidative stress and progressive loss of leaves occurs. Therefore, the use of both photosynthesis performance indexes and the leaf tocopherols concentration as early diagnostic tools might predict declining trends, facilitating the implementation of preventive measures to counteract crown defoliation. The accumulation of red pigments, frequently carotenoids, under chronic stress is a response observed in diverse kinds of eukaryotic photoautotrophs. It is thought that red pigments protect the chlorophyll located underneath by a light-shielding mechanism. However, the synthesis or degradation of carotenoids is a slow process and this response is usually only observed when the stress is maintained over long periods of time. In contrast, rapid colour changes have been reported in the euglenophyte Euglena sanguinea. Here we study the ecophysiological process behind this phenomenon through chlorophyll fluorescence, and pigment, colour and ultrastructural analyses. Reddening in E. sanguinea was due to the presence of a large amount of free and esterified astaxanthin (representing 80% of the carotenoid pool). The process was highly dynamic, shifting from green to red in 8 min (and vice-versa in 20 min). This change was not due to de novo carotenogenesis, but to the relocation of cytoplasmic lipid globules where astaxanthin accumulates. Thus, red globules were observed to migrate from the centre of the cell to peripheral locations when exposed to high light. Globule migration seems to be so efficient that other classical photoprotective mechanisms are not operative in this species. Despite the presence and operation of the diadino-diatoxanthin cycle, non-photochemical quenching was almost undetectable. Since E. sanguinea forms extensive floating colonies, reddening can be observed at a much greater scale than at the cellular level and the mechanism described here is one of the fastest and most dramatic colour changes attributable to photosynthetic organisms at cell and landscape level. In conclusion E. sanguinea shows an extremely dynamic and efficient photoprotective mechanism, based more on organelle migration than on carotenoid biosynthesis, which prevents excess light absorption by chlorophylls reducing the need for other protective processes related to energy dissipation.
