Remote sensing image classification is a critical component of Earth observation (EO) systems, traditionally dominated by convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and other deep learning techniques. However, the advent of Transformer-based architectures and large-scale pre-trained models has significantly shifted, offering enhanced performance and efficiency. This study focuses on identifying the most effective pre-trained model for land use classification in onboard satellite processing, emphasizing achieving high accuracy, computational efficiency, and robustness against noisy data conditions commonly encountered during satellite-based inference. Through extensive experimentation, we compared traditional CNN-based models, ResNet-based models, and various pre-trained vision Transformer models. Our findings demonstrate that pre-trained Transformer models, particularly MobileViTV2 and EfficientViT-M2, outperform models trained from scratch in accuracy and efficiency. These models achieve high performance with reduced computational requirements and exhibit greater resilience during inference under noisy conditions. While MobileViTV2 excelled on clean validation data, EfficientViT-M2 proved more robust when handling noise, making it the most suitable model for onboard satellite Earth observation tasks. In conclusion, EfficientViT-M2 is the optimal choice for reliable and efficient remote sensing image classification in satellite operations, achieving 98.76\% accuracy, precision, and recall. Specifically, EfficientViT-M2 delivered the highest performance across all metrics, excelled in training efficiency (1,000s) and inference time (10s), and demonstrated greater robustness (overall robustness score at 0.79).

Despite ongoing research, the rational design of nontrivial topological semimetal surface states for the selective photocatalytic CO$_2$ conversion into valuable products remains full of challenges. Herein, we present the synthesis of 1T-OsCoTe$_2$ for the photoreduction upgrading of CO$_2$ to tricarbon alkane C$_3$H$_8$,by the integration of experimental work and theory calculation. Experimental studies suggested a high electron based selectivity of 71.2% for C$_3$H$_8$ and an internal quantum efficiency of 54.6% at 380 nm. In-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy demonstrated that Co and Os atoms coordinated with Te atoms enable an efficient Os-Te-Co electron transfer to activate the generation of *CH$_3$,*CHOCO and *CH$_2$OCOCO. Density functional theory calculations further confirmed Os-Te-Co electron bridging on the improved CO$_2$ conversion kinetics. Decoding from the output distributions of large language models to produce high-quality text is a complex challenge in language modeling. Various approaches, such as beam search, sampling with temperature, $k-$sampling, nucleus $p-$sampling, typical decoding, contrastive decoding, and contrastive search, have been proposed to address this problem, aiming to improve coherence, diversity, as well as resemblance to human-generated text. In this study, we introduce adaptive contrastive search, a novel decoding strategy extending contrastive search by incorporating an adaptive degeneration penalty, guided by the estimated uncertainty of the model at each generation step. This strategy is designed to enhance both the creativity and diversity of the language modeling process while at the same time producing coherent and high-quality generated text output. Our findings indicate performance enhancement in both aspects, across different model architectures and datasets, underscoring the effectiveness of our method in text generation tasks. We investigate a continuous-time investment-consumption problem with model uncertainty in a general diffusion-based market with random model coefficients. We assume that a power utility investor is ambiguity-averse, with the preference to robustness captured by the homothetic multiplier robust specification, and the investor's investment and consumption strategies are constrained to closed convex sets. To solve this constrained robust control problem, we employ the stochastic Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman-Isaacs equations, backward stochastic differential equations, and bounded mean oscillation martingale theory. Furthermore, we show the investor incurs (non-negative) utility loss, i.e. the loss in welfare, if model uncertainty is ignored. When the model coefficients are deterministic, we establish formally the relationship between the investor's robustness preference and the robust optimal investment-consumption strategy and the value function, and the impact of investment and consumption constraints on the investor's robust optimal investment-consumption strategy and value function. Extensive numerical experiments highlight the significant impact of ambiguity aversion, consumption and investment constraints, on the investor's robust optimal investment-consumption strategy, utility loss, and value function. Sample Return Capsules (SRCs) entering Earth's atmosphere at hypervelocity from interplanetary space are a valuable resource for studying meteor phenomena. The 24 September 2023 arrival of the OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer) SRC provided an unprecedented chance for geophysical observations of a well-characterized source with known parameters, including timing and trajectory. A collaborative effort involving researchers from 16 institutions executed a carefully planned geophysical observational campaign at strategically chosen locations, deploying over 400 ground-based sensors encompassing infrasound, seismic, distributed acoustic sensing (DAS), and GPS technologies. Additionally, balloons equipped with infrasound sensors were launched to capture signals at higher altitudes. This campaign (the largest of its kind so far) yielded a wealth of invaluable data anticipated to fuel scientific inquiry for years to come. The success of the observational campaign is evidenced by the near-universal detection of signals across instruments, both proximal and distal. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the collective scientific effort, field deployment, and preliminary findings. The early findings have the potential to inform future space missions and terrestrial campaigns, contributing to our understanding of meteoroid interactions with planetary atmospheres. This work presents a polyelectrolyte (PE) model based on a freely jointed chain (FJC) in which the beads are ionizable and the bonds are rigid. Electrostatic interactions considered are of the short range type up to next-nearest neighbours using a Debye-H\"uckel (DH) potential. Exact expressions for the conformational and protonation properties are obtained as a function of the pH using the transfer matrix method and the integration of the angular variables. For the finite cases with low N values, relevant differences arise on both the protonation curve and the end to end distance due to the end effects. Advances in NERFs have allowed for 3D scene reconstructions and novel view synthesis. Yet, efficiently editing these representations while retaining photorealism is an emerging challenge. Recent methods face three primary limitations: they're slow for interactive use, lack precision at object boundaries, and struggle to ensure multi-view consistency. We introduce IReNe to address these limitations, enabling swift, near real-time color editing in NeRF. Leveraging a pre-trained NeRF model and a single training image with user-applied color edits, IReNe swiftly adjusts network parameters in seconds. This adjustment allows the model to generate new scene views, accurately representing the color changes from the training image while also controlling object boundaries and view-specific effects. Object boundary control is achieved by integrating a trainable segmentation module into the model. The process gains efficiency by retraining only the weights of the last network layer. We observed that neurons in this layer can be classified into those responsible for view-dependent appearance and those contributing to diffuse appearance. We introduce an automated classification approach to identify these neuron types and exclusively fine-tune the weights of the diffuse neurons. This further accelerates training and ensures consistent color edits across different views. A thorough validation on a new dataset, with edited object colors, shows significant quantitative and qualitative advancements over competitors, accelerating speeds by 5x to 500x.

The Artificial Intelligence Satellite Telecommunications Testbed (AISTT), part of the ESA project SPAICE, is focused on the transformation of the satellite payload by using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) methodologies over available commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) AI chips for on-board processing. The objectives include validating artificial intelligence-driven SATCOM scenarios such as interference detection, spectrum sharing, radio resource management, decoding, and beamforming. The study highlights hardware selection and payload architecture. Preliminary results show that ML models significantly improve signal quality, spectral efficiency, and throughput compared to conventional payload. This report presents a brief review of matrix algebra and its implementation in Julia for power and energy applications. First, we present basic examples of data visualization, followed by conventional operations with matrices and vectors. Then, we study quadratic forms and norms, two main concepts required in the convergence study of the power flow in power and energy applications. After that, we give good practices to create a neat code in Julia. There is an extensive set of examples available on the Internet related to these basic aspects, so we avoid repeating what is well documented. Hence, we show only basic examples to create our first scripts.

Developing a green and cost-effective catalytic system for the selective oxidation of biomass-derived alcohols is vital for the sustainable synthesis of fine chemicals. Herein, highly dispersed subnanometric amorphous CoOx clusters in anatase TiO2 nanosheets (Co-TiO2) fabricated by green solvent CO2 assisted approach could directly activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the highly selective oxidation of various biomass-derived alcohols. Advanced characterizations (e.g., EXAFS, EPR, AC HAADF-STEM) reveal that a strong interaction of CoOx clusters and the anatase TiO2 support exist in Co-TiO2 and Co atom in Co-TiO2 is mainly consisted of Co2+ and Co3+. The Co-TiO2 catalyst offers superior catalytic performance in the conversion of six types of alcohols (e.g., benzyl alcohol (BAL), 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF)) with high selectivity to produce corresponding aldehydes. Highly dispersed CoOx clusters and the interaction between CoOx clusters and TiO2 support contribute to the superior performance. Mechanism studies show that SO4 radicals play the dominant role in the selective oxidation of model reactant BAL and 1O2 participates in the non-radical pathway. DFT calculations are well matched with experiment and decipher that the strong interaction between CoOx clusters and TiO2 support promotes the formation of SO4 and SO5., Comment: 29 pages, 9 figures

Rational design and green synthesis of low-cost and robust catalysts efficient for the selective oxidation of various alcohols are full of challenges. Herein, we report a fast and solvent-free arc-melting (AM) method to controllably synthesize semimetal CoSi alloy (abbreviated as AM-CoSi) that is efficient for the base- and solvent-free oxidation of six types of aromatic alcohols. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and aberration corrected high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscope (AC HAADF-STEM) confirmed the successful synthesis of AM-CoSi with rich Si vacancy (Siv). The as-prepared CoSi alloy catalysts exhibit an order of magnitude activity enhancement in the oxidation of model reactant benzyl alcohol (BAL) to benzyl benzoate (BBE) compared with its mono counterparts, whereas 70 % yield of BBE which is the highest yield to date. Experimental results and DFT calculations well verify that the CoSi alloy structure improves the BAL conversion and Si vacancy mainly contributes to the generation of BBE. After that, CoSi alloy maintains high stability and a potential pathway is rationally proposed. Besides, CoSi alloy also efficiently works for the selective oxidation of various alcohols with different groups. We introduce TexTile, a novel differentiable metric to quantify the degree upon which a texture image can be concatenated with itself without introducing repeating artifacts (i.e., the tileability). Existing methods for tileable texture synthesis focus on general texture quality, but lack explicit analysis of the intrinsic repeatability properties of a texture. In contrast, our TexTile metric effectively evaluates the tileable properties of a texture, opening the door to more informed synthesis and analysis of tileable textures. Under the hood, TexTile is formulated as a binary classifier carefully built from a large dataset of textures of different styles, semantics, regularities, and human annotations.Key to our method is a set of architectural modifications to baseline pre-train image classifiers to overcome their shortcomings at measuring tileability, along with a custom data augmentation and training regime aimed at increasing robustness and accuracy. We demonstrate that TexTile can be plugged into different state-of-the-art texture synthesis methods, including diffusion-based strategies, and generate tileable textures while keeping or even improving the overall texture quality. Furthermore, we show that TexTile can objectively evaluate any tileable texture synthesis method, whereas the current mix of existing metrics produces uncorrelated scores which heavily hinders progress in the field., Comment: CVPR 2024. Manual analysis and diagnosis of COVID-19 through the examination of Computed Tomography (CT) images of the lungs can be time-consuming and result in errors, especially given high volume of patients and numerous images per patient. So, we address the need for automation of this task by developing a new deep learning model-based pipeline. Our motivation was sparked by the CVPR Workshop on "Domain Adaptation, Explainability and Fairness in AI for Medical Image Analysis", more specifically, the "COVID-19 Diagnosis Competition (DEF-AI-MIA COV19D)" under the same Workshop. This challenge provides an opportunity to assess our proposed pipeline for COVID-19 detection from CT scan images. The same pipeline incorporates the original EfficientNet, but with an added Attention Mechanism: EfficientNet-AM. Also, unlike the traditional/past pipelines, which relied on a pre-processing step, our pipeline takes the raw selected input images without any such step, except for an image-selection step to simply reduce the number of CT images required for training and/or testing. Moreover, our pipeline is computationally efficient, as, for example, it does not incorporate a decoder for segmenting the lungs. It also does not combine different backbones nor combine RNN with a backbone, as other pipelines in the past did. Nevertheless, our pipeline still outperforms all approaches presented by other teams in last year's instance of the same challenge, at least based on the validation subset of the competition dataset.

This paper introduces a joint optimization framework for user-centric beam selection and linear precoding (LP) design in a coordinated multiple-satellite (CoMSat) system, employing a Digital-Fourier-Transform-based (DFT) beamforming (BF) technique. Regarding serving users at their target SINRs and minimizing the total transmit power, the scheme aims to efficiently determine satellites for users to associate with and activate the best cluster of beams together with optimizing LP for every satellite-to-user transmission. These technical objectives are first framed as a complex mixed-integer programming (MIP) challenge. To tackle this, we reformulate it into a joint cluster association and LP design problem. Then, by theoretically analyzing the duality relationship between downlink and uplink transmissions, we develop an efficient iterative method to identify the optimal solution. Additionally, a simpler duality approach for rapid beam selection and LP design is presented for comparison purposes. Simulation results underscore the effectiveness of our proposed schemes across various settings.

This research delves into optimizing mechanism design, with an emphasis on the energy efficiency and the expansive design possibilities of reciprocating mechanisms. It investigates how to efficiently integrate Computer-Aided Design (CAD) simulations with Bayesian Optimization (BO) and a constrained design space, aiming to enhance the design optimization process beyond the confines of traditional kinematic and dynamic analysis. The study sets out to create a novel optimization framework that merges CAD simulations with a BO strategy. Initially, the feasibility of a mechanism design is assessed through CAD-motion simulations, which gauge its practicality. Upon deeming a design feasible, an evaluation via CAD-motion simulations is conducted to ascertain the objective value. This research proposes utilizing non-parametric Gaussian processes for crafting a surrogate model of the objective function, considering the design space's static and dynamic constraints. The findings reveal that the introduced CAD-based Bayesian Optimization framework adeptly identifies optimal design parameters that minimize root mean square (RMS) torque while complying with predetermined constraints. This method markedly diminishes the complexity seen in analytical approaches, rendering it adaptable to intricate mechanisms and practicable for machine builders. The framework evidences the utility of integrating constraints in the optimization process, showing promise for attaining globally optimal designs efficiently. A case study on an emergency ventilator, with three design parameters, demonstrates a 71% RMS torque reduction after 255 CAD-based evaluations, underscoring the approach's effectiveness and its potential for refining mechanism design optimization., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures

Resource-constrained robotic platforms are particularly useful for tasks that require low-cost hardware alternatives due to the risk of losing the robot, like in search-and-rescue applications, or the need for a large number of devices, like in swarm robotics. For this reason, it is crucial to find mechanisms for adapting reinforcement learning techniques to the constraints imposed by lower computational power and smaller memory capacities of these ultra low-cost robotic platforms. We try to address this need by proposing a method for making imitation learning deployable onto resource-constrained robotic platforms. Here we cast the imitation learning problem as a conditional sequence modeling task and we train a decision transformer using expert demonstrations augmented with a custom reward. Then, we compress the resulting generative model using software optimization schemes, including quantization and pruning. We test our method in simulation using Isaac Gym, a realistic physics simulation environment designed for reinforcement learning. We empirically demonstrate that our method achieves natural looking gaits for Bittle, a resource-constrained quadruped robot. We also run multiple simulations to show the effects of pruning and quantization on the performance of the model. Our results show that quantization (down to 4 bits) and pruning reduce model size by around 30\% while maintaining a competitive reward, making the model deployable in a resource-constrained system., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We introduce generalised triple homomorphism between Jordan Banach triple systems as a concept which extends the notion of generalised homomorphism between Banach algebras given by Jarosz and Johnson in 1985 and 1987, respectively. We prove that every generalised triple homomorphism between JB$^*$-triples is automatically continuous. When particularised to C$^*$-algebras, we rediscover one of the main theorems established by Johnson. We shall also consider generalised triple derivations from a Jordan Banach triple $E$ into a Jordan Banach triple $E$-module, proving that every generalised triple derivation from a JB$^*$-triple $E$ into $E^*$ is automatically continuous.

Let $T:E\rightarrow F$ be a non-necessarily continuous triple homomorphism from a (complex) JB$^*$-triple (respectively, a (real) J$^*$B-triple) to a normed Jordan triple. The following statements hold: (1) $T$ has closed range whenever $T$ is continuous (2) $T$ has closed range whenever $T$ is continuous This result generalises classical theorems of I. We prove that every biorthogonality preserving linear surjection from a weakly compact JB$^*$triple containing no infinite dimensional rank-one summands onto another JB$^*$-triple is automatically continuous. We also show that every biorthogonality preserving linear surjection between atomic JBW$^*$triples containing no infinite dimensional rank-one summands is automatically continuous. Consequently, two atomic JBW$^*$-triples containing no rank-one summands are isomorphic if, and only if, there exists a (non necessarily continuous) biorthogonality preserving linear surjection between them.

We introduce $n$-orthogonality (and completely orthogonality) preserving operators between C$^*$-algebras. Our main theorem states that every completely orthogonality preserving bounded linear mapping between C$^*$-algebras is a weighted TRO homomorphism. We also give several characterisations of TRO homomorphisms among triple homomorphisms.

We present the recent development of a lightweight detector capable of accurate spatial, timing, and amplitude resolution of charged particles. The technology is based on double-sided double-metal p+\,--\,n\,--\,n+ micro-strip silicon sensors, ultra-light long aluminum-polyimide micro-cables for the analogue signal transfer, and a custom-developed SMX read-out ASIC capable of measurement of the time ($\Delta t \lesssim 5 \,\mathrm{ns}$) and amplitude. Dense detector integration enables a material budget $>0.3\,\% X_0$. A sophisticated powering and grounding scheme keeps the noise under control. In this paper, we focus on the autonomous multiagent taxi routing problem for a large urban environment where the location and number of future ride requests are unknown a-priori, but can be estimated by an empirical distribution. Recent theory has shown that a rollout algorithm with a stable base policy produces a near-optimal stable policy. In the routing setting, a policy is stable if its execution keeps the number of outstanding requests uniformly bounded over time. Although, rollout-based approaches are well-suited for learning cooperative multiagent policies with considerations for future demand, applying such methods to a large urban environment can be computationally expensive due to the large number of taxis required for stability. In this paper, we aim to address the computational bottleneck of multiagent rollout by proposing an approximate multiagent rollout-based two phase algorithm that reduces computational costs, while still achieving a stable near-optimal policy. Our approach partitions the graph into sectors based on the predicted demand and the maximum number of taxis that can run sequentially given the user's computational resources. The algorithm then applies instantaneous assignment (IA) for re-balancing taxis across sectors and a sector-wide multiagent rollout algorithm that is executed in parallel for each sector. We provide two main theoretical results: 1) characterize the number of taxis $m$ that is sufficient for IA to be stable; 2) derive a necessary condition on $m$ to maintain stability for IA as time goes to infinity. Our numerical results show that our approach achieves stability for an $m$ that satisfies the theoretical conditions. The incorporation of subarrays in Direct Radiating Arrays for satellite missions is fundamental in reducing the number of Radio Frequency chains, which correspondingly diminishes cost, power consumption, space, and mass. Despite the advantages, previous beamforming schemes incur significant losses during beam scanning, particularly when hybrid beamforming is not employed. Consequently, this paper introduces an algorithm capable of compensating for these losses by increasing the power, for this, the algorithm will activate radiating elements required to address a specific Effective Isotropic Radiated Power for a beam pattern over Earth, projected from a GeoStationary satellite. In addition to the aforementioned compensation, other beam parameters have been addressed in the algorithm, such as beamwidth and Side Lobe Levels. To achieve these objectives, we propose employing the array thinning concept through the use of genetic algorithms, which enable beam shaping with the desired characteristics and power. The full array design considers an open-ended waveguide, configured to operate in circular polarization within the Ka-band frequency range of 17.7-20.2 GHz.

Satellite communications (SatCom) are crucial for global connectivity, especially in the era of emerging technologies like 6G and narrowing the digital divide. Traditional SatCom systems struggle with efficient resource management due to static multibeam configurations, hindering quality of service (QoS) amidst dynamic traffic demands. This paper introduces an innovative solution - real-time adaptive beamforming on multibeam satellites with software-defined payloads in geostationary orbit (GEO). Utilizing a Direct Radiating Array (DRA) with circular polarization in the 17.7 - 20.2 GHz band, the paper outlines DRA design and a supervised learning-based algorithm for on-board beamforming. In today's ever-connected world, the demand for fast and widespread connectivity is insatiable, making multibeam satellite systems an indispensable pillar of modern telecommunications infrastructure. However, the evolving communication landscape necessitates a high degree of adaptability. This adaptability is particularly crucial for beamforming, as it enables the adjustment of peak throughput and beamwidth to meet fluctuating traffic demands by varying the beamwidth, side lobe level (SLL), and effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP). This paper introduces an innovative approach rooted in supervised learning to efficiently derive the requisite beamforming matrix, aligning it with system requirements. Significantly reducing computation time, this method is uniquely tailored for real-time adaptation, enhancing the agility and responsiveness of satellite multibeam systems. The Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities aims to digitize its Medieval Latin Dictionary. This dictionary entails record cards referring to lemmas in medieval Latin, a low-resource language. A crucial step of the digitization process is the Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) of the handwritten lemmas found on these record cards. In our work, we introduce an end-to-end pipeline, tailored to the medieval Latin dictionary, for locating, extracting, and transcribing the lemmas. We employ two state-of-the-art (SOTA) image segmentation models to prepare the initial data set for the HTR task. Furthermore, we experiment with different transformer-based models and conduct a set of experiments to explore the capabilities of different combinations of vision encoders with a GPT-2 decoder. Additionally, we also apply extensive data augmentation resulting in a highly competitive model. The ultra-secure quantum network leverages quantum cryptography to deliver unsurpassed data transfer security. In principle, the well-known quantum key distribution (QKD) achieves unconditional security, which raises concerns about the trustworthiness of 6G wireless systems in order to mitigate the gap between practice and theory. The long-distance satellite-to-ground evolving quantum network distributes keys that are ubiquitous to the node on the ground through low-orbit satellites. As the secret key sequence is encoded into quantum states, it is sent through the atmosphere via a quantum channel. It still requires more effort in the physical layer design of deployment ranges, transmission, and security to achieve high-quality quantum communication. In this paper, we first review the quantum states and channel properties for satellite-based quantum networks and long-range quantum state transfer (QST). Moreover, we highlight some challenges, such as transmissivity statistics, estimation of channel parameters and attack resilience, quantum state transfer for satellite-based quantum networks, and wavepacket shaping techniques over atmospheric channels. This study introduces the concept of the forking effect in the cryptocurrency market,specifically focusing on the impact of forking events on bitcoin, also called parent coin.We use a modified exponential GARCH model to examine the bitcoin's response inreturns and volatility. Our findings reveal that forking events do not significantlyaffect the bitcoin's returns but have a strong positive impact on its volatility, especially when considering market dynamics. Our model accounts for key features likevolatility clustering and fat-tailed distributions. Additionally, we observe that following a fork event, volatility remains elevated for the next three days, regardless ofother forking events, and the volatility impact does not increase when multiple forksoccur simultaneously on the same day.

Recent studies have demonstrated how to assess the stereotypical bias in pre-trained English language models. In this work, we extend this branch of research in multiple different dimensions by systematically investigating (a) mono- and multilingual models of (b) different underlying architectures with respect to their bias in (c) multiple different languages. To that end, we make use of the English StereoSet data set (Nadeem et al., 2021), which we semi-automatically translate into German, French, Spanish, and Turkish. We find that it is of major importance to conduct this type of analysis in a multilingual setting, as our experiments show a much more nuanced picture as well as notable differences from the English-only analysis. The main takeaways from our analysis are that mGPT-2 (partly) shows surprising anti-stereotypical behavior across languages, English (monolingual) models exhibit the strongest bias, and the stereotypes reflected in the data set are least present in Turkish models. Large events such as conferences, concerts and sports games, often cause surges in demand for ride services that are not captured in average demand patterns, posing unique challenges for routing algorithms. We propose a learning framework for an autonomous fleet of taxis that leverages event data from the internet to predict demand surges and generate cooperative routing policies. We achieve this through a combination of two major components: (i) a demand prediction framework that uses textual event information in the form of events' descriptions and reviews to predict event-driven demand surges over street intersections, and (ii) a scalable multiagent reinforcement learning framework that leverages demand predictions and uses one-agent-at-a-time rollout combined with limited sampling certainty equivalence to learn intersection-level routing policies. For our experimental results we consider real NYC ride share data for the year 2022 and information for more than 2000 events across 300 unique venues in Manhattan. We test our approach with a fleet of 100 taxis on a map with 2235 street intersections. Neural material representations are becoming a popular way to represent materials for rendering. They are more expressive than analytic models and occupy less memory than tabulated BTFs. However, existing neural materials are immutable, meaning that their output for a certain query of UVs, camera, and light vector is fixed once they are trained. While this is practical when there is no need to edit the material, it can become very limiting when the fragment of the material used for training is too small or not tileable, which frequently happens when the material has been captured with a gonioreflectometer. In this paper, we propose a novel neural material representation which jointly tackles the problems of BTF compression, tiling, and extrapolation. At test time, our method uses a guidance image as input to condition the neural BTF to the structural features of this input image. Then, the neural BTF can be queried as a regular BTF using UVs, camera, and light vectors. Every component in our framework is purposefully designed to maximize BTF encoding quality at minimal parameter count and computational complexity, achieving competitive compression rates compared with previous work. We propose a learning-based method to recover normals, specularity, and roughness from a single diffuse image of a material, using microgeometry appearance as our primary cue. Previous methods that work on single images tend to produce over-smooth outputs with artifacts, operate at limited resolution, or train one model per class with little room for generalization. In contrast, in this work, we propose a novel capture approach that leverages a generative network with attention and a U-Net discriminator, which shows outstanding performance integrating global information at reduced computational complexity. We showcase the performance of our method with a real dataset of digitized textile materials and show that a commodity flatbed scanner can produce the type of diffuse illumination required as input to our method. Additionally, because the problem might be illposed -- more than a single diffuse image might be needed to disambiguate the specular reflection -- or because the training dataset is not representative enough of the real distribution, we propose a novel framework to quantify the model's confidence about its prediction at test time. Our method is the first one to deal with the problem of modeling uncertainty in material digitization, increasing the trustworthiness of the process and enabling more intelligent strategies for dataset creation, as we demonstrate with an active learning experiment., Comment: CVPR 2023. This paper surveys the application and development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Satellite Communication (SatCom) and Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN). We first present a comprehensive list of use cases, the relative challenges and the main AI tools capable of addressing those challenges. For each use case, we present the main motivation, a system description, the available non-AI solutions and the potential benefits and available works using AI. We also discuss the pros and cons of an on-board and on-ground AI-based architecture, and we revise the current commercial and research activities relevant to this topic. Next, we describe the state-of-the-art hardware solutions for developing ML in real satellite systems. Finally, we discuss the long-term developments of AI in the SatCom and NTN sectors and potential research directions. This paper provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the opportunities and challenges offered by AI to improve the performance and efficiency of NTNs.
