Runway and taxiway pavements are exposed to high stress during their projected lifetime, which inevitably leads to a decrease in their condition over time. To make sure airport pavement condition ensure uninterrupted and resilient operations, it is of utmost importance to monitor their condition and conduct regular inspections. UAV-based inspection is recently gaining importance due to its wide range monitoring capabilities and reduced cost. In this work, we propose a vision-based approach to automatically identify pavement distress using images captured by UAVs. The proposed method is based on Deep Learning (DL) to segment defects in the image. The DL architecture leverages the low computational capacities of embedded systems in UAVs by using an optimised implementation of EfficientNet feature extraction and Feature Pyramid Network segmentation. To deal with the lack of annotated data for training we have developed a synthetic dataset generation methodology to extend available distress datasets. We demonstrate that the use of a mixed dataset composed of synthetic and real training images yields better results when testing the training models in real application scenarios., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, published in proceedings of 15th International Conference on Machine Vision (ICMV)

Nowadays, containerized freight transport is one of the most important transportation systems that is undergoing an automation process due to the Deep Learning success. However, it suffers from a lack of annotated data in order to incorporate state-of-the-art neural network models to its systems. In this paper we present an innovative methodology to generate a realistic, varied, balanced, and labelled dataset for visual inspection task of containers in a dock environment. In addition, we validate this methodology with multiple visual tasks recurrently found in the state of the art. We prove that the generated synthetic labelled dataset allows to train a deep neural network that can be used in a real world scenario. On the other side, using this methodology we provide the first open synthetic labelled dataset called SeaFront available in: https://datasets.vicomtech.org/di21-seafront/readme.txt.

In Rwanda, cattle and milk hold a cultural and historical significance, providing an opportunity for pro-dairy governmental policies aimed to alleviate food insecurity, malnutrition, and improve livelihoods. The government of Rwanda has identified strategies to grow the dairy sector through strategic investment to achieve these goals. It is estimated two-thirds of lactating cows in Rwanda have clinical or subclinical mastitis, which reduces milk production and increases the risk of milk as a source for zoonotic disease if the milk is consumed undercooked or unpasteurized. This case study outlines the implementation of a One Health framework that integrates education, research, and outreach in Rwanda to improve food safety and food security, for the social, economic, and health benefit of Rwandans and their livestock. Twenty-five Rwandan Extension Specialists participated in the Dairy Dynamic Management education, research, and outreach program. Once trained, the extension specialists supported 30 small holder dairy farmers in performing proper husbandry and animal health practices for mastitis control and reduction of bacterial counts in the udder. Over the 16-week program, 30 small holder dairy farmers and 100 dairy cows were surveyed weekly for animal husbandry, animal health, and mastitis indicators. Outcomes were evaluated by monitoring animal health, foodborne pathogens in milk, and compliance to animal husbandry protocols. Quarter milk samples were collected weekly and evaluated for the presence of bacteria that are common causes of mastitis. We found a statistically significant reduction of mean total bacterial counts and prevalence of bacterial species in quarters over the 16-week training (P ≤ .01). Smallholders were monitored through observing farmers performing hygienic milking protocols. Farmers conducted the protocol correctly greater than 90% of the time by the end of the 16-week program for 5 of 7 steps for proper hygienic milking procedures, indicating farmers were eager to learn and adopt the procedures. However, follow-up and retraining with Extension Specialists is vital to continued success. We demonstrate that an integrative One Health education, research, and outreach program can be successful in improving animal health, food safety, and food security and this framework can be applied to other agricultural sectors and geographic regions.

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a common childhood cancer that shares features with developing skeletal muscle. Yet, the conservation of cellular hierarchy with human muscle development and the identification of molecularly defined tumor-propagating cells has not been reported. Using single-cell RNA-sequencing, DNA-barcode cell fate mapping and functional stem cell assays, we uncovered shared tumor cell hierarchies in RMS and human muscle development. We also identified common developmental stages at which tumor cells become arrested. Fusion-negative RMS cells resemble early myogenic cells found in embryonic and fetal development, while fusion-positive RMS cells express a highly specific gene program found in muscle cells transiting from embryonic to fetal development at 7-7.75 weeks of age. Fusion-positive RMS cells also have neural pathway-enriched states, suggesting less-rigid adherence to muscle-lineage hierarchies. Finally, we identified a molecularly defined tumor-propagating subpopulation in fusion-negative RMS that shares remarkable similarity to bi-potent, muscle mesenchyme progenitors that can make both muscle and osteogenic cells.

25. Computational Thinking and User Interfaces: A Systematic Review
- Author

- Abstract
Contribution: This document presents a systematic bibliographic review that demonstrates the need to conduct research on how the user experience impacts the development of computational thinking. Background: In the field of computer science, computational thinking is defined as a method that enhances problem-solving skills, system design, and human behavior understanding. Over the last few decades, several tools have been proposed for the development of computational thinking skills; however, there is no area of study that evaluates the implications or the impact that these types of platforms have on users belonging to any knowledge area. Research Question: Do user interfaces influence the development of computational thinking skills? Methodology: To address this issue, a systematic review of the literature was conducted using the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) methodology for analyzing and evaluating scientific publications. Findings: The results show that despite the dearth of literature on the subject, the specific design of a user interface has a significant impact on the development of computational thinking. Bearing the above in mind, it is necessary to conduct research that delves more deeply into the effects caused by the technologies that are used to develop computational thinking, this being a line of research that is worthy of consideration.

Computer Science - Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition - Abstract
This study focuses on automatic skin cancer detection using a Meta-learning approach for dermoscopic images. The aim of this study is to explore the benefits of the generalization of the knowledge extracted from non-medical data in the classification performance of medical data and the impact of the distribution shift problem within limited data by using a simple class and distribution balancer algorithm. In this study, a small sample of a combined dataset from 3 different sources was used to fine-tune a ResNet model pre-trained on non-medical data. The results show an increase in performance on detecting melanoma, malignant (skin cancer), and benign moles with the prior knowledge obtained from images of everyday objects from the ImageNet dataset by 20 points. These findings suggest that features from non-medical images can be used towards the classification of skin moles and that the distribution of the data affects the performance of the model.

- Abstract
Although black male students are overrepresented on high-profile NCAA basketball and football teams, they actually represent the minority of athletes and athletic aid recipients in the Power Five conferences. In these conferences, there are more than twice as many white male athletes as black male athletes. The real imbalance becomes clear when comparing the number of black males--both athletes and students in general--to the overall student populations on these campuses. Currently, black men represent less than 10 percent of total full-time, undergraduate male degree seekers at nearly all of the colleges in each of the Power Five conferences. In fact, black men are so underrepresented at Power Five conference schools that black male athletes represent a sizable chunk of these colleges' full-time, undergraduate black male student populations. This issue brief is based on a Center for American Progress analysis of 2016-17 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) data that looks at both the total number of athletes per conference and at the number of athletes who receive some form of scholarship or athletic aid at an institution in one of the Power Five conferences.

Over the past decades, experimental research with animals has demonstrated that the generalisation between two stimuli is determined not only by their intrinsic properties, but by their associative history. This phenomenon is illustrated with the use of acquired equivalence tasks, which show that stimuli are treated as more similar when they come to elicit the same response as a result of conditioning. Different associative learning theories have been proposed to accommodate extant experimental findings. Mediated conditioning can explain simple forms of acquired equivalence (Honey & Hall, 1989), but is unable to accommodate findings from more complex configural acquired equivalence tasks, where stimuli are equally reinforced and nonreinforced. Pearce's (1994) connectionist model and its extended version (Honey & Watt, 1998) can explain findings from revaluation configural acquired equivalence procedures, but cannot anticipate findings from other forms of configural acquired equivalence. Alternatively, Honey and colleagues (Honey, 2000; Honey et al., 2010) proposed a connectionist model that allows for similar inputs that share a common reinforcer to share hidden units. This model was able to accommodate a wide range of experimental findings that other models failed to explain. Honey and colleagues claimed that their connectionist model could also accommodate the results from Intra dimensional/Extra-dimensional shift tasks (IDS/EDS), which consistently find that IDS is easier than EDS, without explicitly invoking the need for attention. In Chapter 2, we tested this claim by assessing the correlation between performance in a configural acquired equivalence task and two attentional set tasks: IDS/EDS and optional-shift. Findings revealed an overall positive correlation between test performance in acquired equivalence and optional-shift, but no correlation between performance in our acquired equivalence task and IDS/EDS, in what could be seen as a challenge to Honey et al. (2010). Chapter 3 tested the effects of various outcome manipulations in configural and non-configural acquired equivalence. Experiments in this chapter revealed an enhanced revaluation and acquired equivalence effect in participants who had experienced different outcomes across training and revaluation, compared to participants who had received the same outcomes across stages. However, these group differences disappeared in a second experiment that intermixed configural and non-configural trials during the initial discrimination. A second set of experiments in this chapter failed to replicate findings from Delamater (1998), which reported a faster reversal acquisition in a group of rats that received different outcomes within stimulus modality compared to a group of rats that received the same outcomes within stimulus modality. Although Honey and colleagues carefully described the characteristics of their network, verbal descriptions could be prone to error. To the aim of qualifying the model, Chapter 4 describes a series of simulations of the experimental data presented in chapters 2 and 3 of this thesis using a formal computer instantiation of Honey's model that was recently published (Robinson et al., 2019). This Hebbian learning network successfully simulated data from our 2-Stages configural acquired equivalence task and confirmed an enhanced acquired equivalence effect in a simulation with different outcomes across training and revaluation. This instantiation of the model was also able to accommodate findings from Delamater (1998), despite our unsuccessful attempts to replicate and extend the generality of the findings to human participants.
