We formulate the basic theoretical methods for Bose-Einstein Condensation of atoms close to a Feshbach resonance, in which the tunable scattering length of the atoms is described using a system of coupled atom and molecule fields. These include the Thomas-Fermi description of the condensate profile, the c-field equations, and the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, and the Bogoliubov excitation spectrum for a homogenous condensed system. We apply this formalism to the special case of Bragg scattering from a uniform condensate, and find that for moderate and large scattering lengths, there is a dramatic difference in the shift of the peak of the Bragg spectra, compared to that based on a structureless atom model. The result is compatible with the experimental results of Papp et al. [S. B. Papp et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 101(13):135301, Sep 2008]., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures

We present a theoretical model for Bragg scattering from a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in the vicinity of a magnetic Feshbach resonance, using a two c-field formalism, one c-field for the atom and the other for a molecule formed of two atoms. We use this model to numerically simulate a recent experiment [S. B. Papp et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 101(13):135301, Sep 2008] investigating the effects of strong interactions on the Bragg spectrum from a 85Rb BEC. Results from these simulations are in very good quantitative agreement with the experimental results, confirming the importance of the resonance bound state in the dynamics of the condensate for fast experiments like Bragg scattering., Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures

We present a model of a coupled bosonic atom-molecule system, using the recently developed c-field methods as the basis in our formalism. We derive expressions for the s-wave scattering length and binding energy within this formalism, and by relating these to the corresponding experimental parameters, we can accurately determine the phenomenological parameters in our system., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures

We review phase space techniques based on the Wigner representation that provide an approximate description of dilute ultra-cold Bose gases. In this approach the quantum field evolution can be represented using equations of motion of a similar form to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation but with stochastic modifications that include quantum effects in a controlled degree of approximation. These techniques provide a practical quantitative description of both equilibrium and dynamical properties of Bose gas systems. We develop versions of the formalism appropriate at zero temperature, where quantum fluctuations can be important, and at finite temperature where thermal fluctuations dominate. The numerical techniques necessary for implementing the formalism are discussed in detail, together with methods for extracting observables of interest. We present a quantum mechanical treatment of the mechanical stirring of Bose-Einstein condensates using classical field techniques. In our approach the condensate and excited modes are described using a Hamiltonian classical field method in which the atom number and (rotating frame) energy are strictly conserved. We simulate a T = 0 quasi-2D condensate perturbed by a rotating anisotropic trapping potential. Vacuum fluctuations in the initial state provide an irreducible mechanism for breaking the initial symmetries of the condensate and seeding the subsequent dynamical instability. Highly turbulent motion develops and we quantify the emergence of a rotating thermal component that provides the dissipation necessary for the nucleation and motional-damping of vortices in the condensate. Vortex lattice formation is not observed, rather the vortices assemble into a spatially disordered vortex liquid state. We discuss methods we have developed to identify the condensate in the presence of an irregular distribution of vortices, determine the thermodynamic parameters of the thermal component, and extract damping rates from the classical field trajectories., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures. v2: Minor refinements made at suggestion of referee. We present a toy model where spacetime is emergent from a more fundamental microscopic system, and investigate the gray area interpolating between the collective and free-particle regimes. For a period of rapid exponential growth in the analogue universe, we argue that the intermediate regime is best described by a coloured potpourri of geometries -- a "rainbow geometry". This can be viewed as an alternative approach towards understanding quantum field theories in the presence of Lorentz-symmetry breaking at ultraviolet scales. Firstly, it is pointed out that cosmological particle production in our emergent FRW-type analogue universe, when compared to conventional semi-classical quantum gravity, is only temporarily robust against model-specific deviations from Lorentz invariance. We investigate cosmological particle production in spacetimes where Lorentz invariance emerges in the infrared limit, but is explicitly broken in the ultraviolet regime. Our specific model focuses on the boost subgroup that supports CPT invariance and results in a momentum-dependent dispersion relation. Motivated by previous studies on spacetimes emerging from a microscopic substrate, we show how these modifications naturally lead to momentum-dependent rainbow metrics. Firstly, we investigate the possibility of reproducing cosmological particle production in spacetimes emerging from real Bose gases. We have studied the influence of non-perturbative ultraviolet corrections in time-dependent analogue spacetimes, leading to momentum-dependent emergent rainbow spacetimes. Within certain limits the analogy is sufficiently good to simulate relativistic quantum field theory in time-dependent classical backgrounds, and the quantum effects are approximately robust against the model-dependent modifications. Secondly, we analyze how significantly the particle production process deviates from the common picture. While very low-energy modes do not see the difference at all, some modes "re-enter the Hubble horizon" during the inflationary epoch, and extreme ultraviolet modes are completely insensitive to the expansion.

We develop a stochastic Gross-Pitaveskii theory suitable for the study of Bose-Einstein condensation in a {\em rotating} dilute Bose gas. The theory is used to model the dynamical and equilibrium properties of a rapidly rotating Bose gas quenched through the critical point for condensation, as in the experiment of Haljan et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett., 87, 21043 (2001)]. In contrast to stirring a vortex-free condensate, where topological constraints require that vortices enter from the edge of the condensate, we find that phase defects in the initial non-condensed cloud are trapped en masse in the emerging condensate. Bose-stimulated condensate growth proceeds into a disordered vortex configuration. At sufficiently low temperature the vortices then order into a regular Abrikosov lattice in thermal equilibrium with the rotating cloud. We calculate the effect of thermal fluctuations on vortex ordering in the final gas at different temperatures, and find that the BEC transition is accompanied by lattice melting associated with diminishing long range correlations between vortices across the system., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures

We study an experimentally realizable system containing stable black hole-white hole acoustic horizons in toroidally trapped Bose-Einstein condensates - the quantum de Laval nozzle. We numerically obtain stationary flow configurations and assess their stability using Bogoliubov theory, finding both in hydrodynamic and non-hydrodynamic regimes there exist dynamically unstable regions associated with the creation of positive and negative energy quasiparticle pairs in analogy with the gravitational Hawking effect. The dynamical instability takes the form of a two mode squeezing interaction between resonant pairs of Bogoliubov modes. We study the evolution of dynamically unstable flows using the truncated Wigner method, which confirms the two mode squeezed state picture of the analogue Hawking effect for low winding number., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

Analogue models of gravity have been motivated by the possibility of investigating phenomena not readily accessible in their cosmological counterparts. In this paper, we investigate the analogue of cosmological particle creation in a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe by numerically simulating a Bose-Einstein condensate with a time-dependent scattering length. In particular, we focus on a two-dimensional homogeneous condensate using the classical field method via the truncated Wigner approximation. We show that for various forms of the scaling function the particle production is consistent with the underlying theory in the long wavelength limit. In this context, we further discuss the implications of modified dispersion relations that arise from the microscopic theory of a weakly interacting Bose gas., Comment: 26 pages, 8 figures

The study of the non-equilibrium dynamics in Bose-Einstein condensed gases has been dominated by the zero-temperature, mean field Gross-Pitaevskii formalism. Motivated by recent experiments on the reflection of condensates from silicon surfaces, we revisit the so-called {\em classical field} description of condensate dynamics, which incorporates the effects of quantum noise and can also be generalized to include thermal effects. The noise is included in a stochastic manner through the initial conditions. We show that the inclusion of such noise is important in the quantitative description of the recent reflection experiments.

We perform fully three-dimensional simulations, using the truncated Wigner method, to investigate the reflection of Bose-Einstein condensates from abrupt potential barriers. We show that the inter-atomic interactions can disrupt the internal structure of a cigar-shaped cloud with a high atom density at low approach velocities, damping the center-of-mass motion and generating vortices. Furthermore, by incorporating quantum noise we show that scattering halos form at high approach velocities, causing an associated condensate depletion. We present a theoretical treatment of Bragg scattering of a degenerate Fermi gas in the weakly interacting BCS regime. Our numerical calculations predict correlated scattering of Cooper pairs into a spherical shell in momentum space. The scattered shell of correlated atoms is centered at half the usual Bragg momentum transfer, and can be clearly distinguished from atoms scattered by the usual single-particle Bragg mechanism. We develop an analytic model that explains key features of the correlated-pair Bragg scattering, and determine the dependence of this scattering on the initial pair correlations in the gas., Comment: Manuscript substantially revised. A generalised stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing a partially condensed trapped Bose gas with rotating thermal component is presented. We elucidate the manner in which the rotation changes the role of the high energy cutoff and introduces centrifugal effects in the classical field evolution. The rotation of the cloud means that Bose-enhanced collision processes occur preferentially into states with the same angular momentum as the thermal cloud, thus favouring vortex formation. We apply the truncated Wigner method to the process of three-body recombination in ultracold Bose gases. We find that within the validity regime of the Wigner truncation for two-body scattering, three-body recombination can be treated using a set of coupled stochastic differential equations that include diffusion terms, and can be simulated using known numerical methods. We investigate numerically simulated collisions between experimentally realistic Bose-Einstein condensate wavepackets, within a regime where highly populated scattering haloes are formed. The theoretical basis for this work is the truncated Wigner method, for which we present a detailed derivation, paying particular attention to its validity regime for colliding condensates. This paper is an extension of our previous Letter [A. A. Norrie, R. J. Ballagh, and C. W. Gardiner, Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 040401 (2005)] and we investigate both single-trajectory solutions, which reveal the presence of quantum turbulence in the scattering halo, and ensembles of trajectories, which we use to calculate quantum-mechanical correlation functions of the field.

The dissipative dynamics of a vortex in a finite temperature trapped Bose-Einstein condensate are shown to be governed by a {\em diffusive instability}. In the weakly interacting regime we find a cross-over from instability to metastability of the vortex, determined only by the relative rotation rate of the vortex and thermal cloud. Even in the thermodynamically stable regime there is a finite lifetime arising from diffusive instability. We find the mean exit time for the vortex from the condensate, and show that near the critical frequency for thermodynamic stability the lifetime has a universal form which is independent of the condensate size and the vortex precession frequency. In the thermodynamically stable regime the steady-state two-time position correlation predicts `thermal bunching', giving an increased probability of positional coincidence for short times., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

We investigate the properties of the stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing a condensate interacting with a stationary thermal cloud derived by Gardiner and coworkers. We find the appropriate Ehrenfest relations for the SGPE, including the effect of growth noise and projector terms arising from the energy cutoff. This is carried out in the high temperature regime appropriate for the SGPE, which simplifies the action of the projectors. The validity condition for neglecting the projector terms in the Ehrenfest relations is found to be more stringent than the usual condition of validity of the truncated Wigner method or classical field method -- which is that all modes are highly occupied. In addition it is required that the overlap of the nonlinear term with the lowest energy eigenstate of the non-condensate band is small. We show how to use the Ehrenfest relations along with the corrections generated by the projector to monitor dynamical artifacts arising from the cutoff. We also investigate the effect of using different bases to describe a harmonically trapped BEC at finite temperature by comparing the condensate fraction found using the plane wave and single particle bases. We show that the equilibrium properties are strongly dependent on the choice of basis. There is thus an optimal choice of plane wave basis for a given cut-off energy and we show that this basis gives the best reproduction of the single particle spectrum, the condensate fraction and the position and momentum densities., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures

We present a detailed theoretical analysis of micro-motion in a time-averaged orbiting potential trap. Our treatment is based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, with the full time dependent behaviour of the trap systematically approximated to reduce the trapping potential to its dominant terms. We show that within some well specified approximations, the dynamic trap has solitary-wave solutions, and we identify a moving frame of reference which provides the most natural description of the system. In that frame eigenstates of the time-averaged orbiting potential trap can be found, all of which must be solitary-wave solutions with identical, circular centre of mass motion in the lab frame. We present a phase-space method for the Bose-Hubbard model based on the Q-function representation. In particular, we consider two model Hamiltonians in the mean-field approximation; the first is the standard "one site" model where quantum tunneling is approximated entirely using mean-field terms; the second "two site" model explicitly includes tunneling between two adjacent sites while treating tunneling with other neighbouring sites using the mean-field approximation. The ground state is determined by minimizing the classical energy functional subject to quantum mechanical constraints, which take the form of uncertainty relations. For each model Hamiltonian we compare the ground state results from the Q-function method with the exact numerical solution. The results from the Q-function method, which are easy to compute, give a good qualitative description of the main features of the Bose-Hubbard model including the superfluid to Mott insulator. We present a neutron diffraction study of the magnetic structure of single crystal PrO2 under applied fields of 0-6 T. As the field is increased, changes are observed in the magnetic Bragg intensities. These changes are found to be irreversible when the field is reduced, but the original intensities can be recovered by heating to T > 122 K, then re-cooling in zero field. The antiferromagnetic ordering temperature TN = 13.5 K and the magnetic periodicity are unaffected by the applied field. We also report measurements of the magnetic susceptibility of single crystal PrO2 under applied fields of 0-7 T. These show strong anisotropy, as well as an anomaly at T = 122 +/- 2 K which coincides with the temperature TD = 120 +/- 2 K at which a structural distortion occurs. For fields applied along the [100] direction the susceptibility increases irreversibly with field in the temperature range TN < T < TD. However, for fields along [110] the susceptibility is independent of field in this range. We report measurements of the flux hysteresis curves and trapped flux distribution in an YBa2Cu3O7 r.f. SQUID containing two closely spaced grain boundary Josephson junctions in parallel. Broadening of the flux distribution from T = 15 K to 30 K is followed by a bifurcation at T = 35 K which corresponds to a degenerate ground state. Above T ~ 40 K the bifurcation disappears, the flux distribution narrows significantly and small secondary loops appear in the hysteresis curves. This behaviour can be modelled qualitatively if we assume a temperature dependent second harmonic term in the current-phase relationship of the junctions., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

We apply the classical field method to simulate the production of correlated atoms during the collision of two Bose-Einstein condensates. Our non-perturbative method includes the effect of quantum noise, and provides for the first time a theoretical description of collisions of high density condensates with very large out-scattered fractions. Quantum correlation functions for the scattered atoms are calculated from a single simulation, and show that the correlation between pairs of atoms of opposite momentum is rather small.
