9. Age-related male reproductive effort in two mountain ungulates of contrasting sexual size dimorphism

Abstract

In polygynous ungulates, the reproductive effort of adult males peaks during a short period in which feeding activities are sacrificed for mating activities. Hence, both fat reserves and body mass are predicted to decline markedly during this period. The decline is also predicted to be greater in fat reserves than in body mass because fat is catabolized before muscle, and to increase with the intensity of sexual selection. In contrast, no specific patterns are expected in females for which late gestation and lactation rather than mating are the energetically most demanding periods. We tested these hypotheses in two mountain ungulates of contrasting sexual size dimorphism (SSD): Himalayan tahr (Hemitragus jemlahicus (H. Smith, 1826)) (SSD = 123%) and alpine chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra (L., 1758)) (SSD = 26%). As expected, kidney fat declined more rapidly than body mass in adult males of both species. Kidney fat declined faster in adult male tahr compared with adult male chamois. There was no consistent pattern of changes in body mass or kidney fat in female tahr or female chamois. Our results suggest that adult males of species with strong SSD allocate more energy to mating than males of less dimorphic species. Chez les ongules polygynes, l'effort de reproduction des males adultes atteint son maximum durant une courte periode pendant laquelle les activites alimentaires sont sacrifiees en faveur des activites de reproduction. Les reserves de graisses et la masse corporelle devraient donc diminuer fortement durant cette periode. Ce declin devrait etre plus marque pour les reserves de graisses que pour la masse corporelle car la graisse est catabolisee avant le muscle. Ce declin devrait aussi augmenter avec l'intensite de la selection sexuelle. En revanche, aucun patron specifique n'est attendu chez les femelles pour qui la fin de la gestation et l'allaitement sont les periodes les plus couteuses en energie. Nous avons teste ces hypotheses chez deux ongules de montagne presentant un dimorphisme sexuel de taille (SSD) tres contraste : le thar de l'Himalaya (Hemitragus jemlahicus (H. Smith, 1826)) (SSD = 123 %) et le chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra (L., 1758)) (SSD = 26 %). Comme attendu, les graisses renales ont diminue plus rapidement que la masse corporelle chez les males adultes des deux especes et ces graisses ont diminue plus rapidement chez les males adultes de thar que chez les males adultes de chamois. Nous n'avons pas detecte de patron de variation specifique de la masse corporelle et des graisses renales chez les femelles de thar et de chamois. Abstract

Investigating the factors shaping the activity of large herbivores is of prime importance because changes in their activity patterns may indicate physiological stress, which can affect reproduction and survival of individuals, and thereby population growth. Although climatic conditions are known to impact the activity patterns of large herbivores, few studies have investigated this relationship at a fine temporal scale. From a continuous monitoring of activity, we assessed the influence of temperature and wind on the summer activity of female mouflon (Ovis gmelini musimon Pallas, 1811 x Ovis sp.) facing summer droughts. Females showed a marked bimodal activity pattern, with activity peaks occurring after dawn and before dusk. When temperature increased and wind speed decreased, the morning activity peak occurred earlier, while the evening activity peak was delayed. Hence, under stressing climatic conditions, female mouflon decreased their diurnal activity while increasing their nocturnal activity. However, this nocturnal increase did not prevent the activity rate over 24 h to decrease during hot nonwindy days compared with cool windy days. Although the occurrence of wind mitigated the negative influence of heat on the diurnal activity, wind had no effect at the daily scale. These findings emphasize the importance of working at different temporal scales when assessing the activity patterns of free-ranging vertebrates. Il est important d'etudier les facteurs influencant l'activite des grands herbivores car les modifications de leurs patrons d'activite peuvent reveler un stress physiologique pouvant affecter la reproduction et la survie des individus, et donc la croissance de la population. Bien qu'il soit reconnu que les conditions climatiques influencent les patrons d'activite des grands herbivores, peu d'etudes ont ete realisees sur des donnees a fine echelle temporelle. A partir d'un suivi continu de l'activite, nous avons evalue l'influence de la temperature et du vent sur l'activite estivale de femelles de mouflon (Ovis gmelini musimon Pallas, 1811 x Ovis sp.) confrontees a des etes secs. Les femelles presentent un patron d'activite bimodal marque avec des pics d'activite apres l'aube et avant le crepuscule. Lorsque les temperatures augmentent et que la vitesse du vent diminue, le pic d'activite du matin a lieu plus tot tandis que celui du soir a lieu plus tardivement. Ainsi, lors de conditions climatiques stressantes, les femelles de mouflons diminuent leur activite diurne tandis qu'elles augmentent leur activite nocturne. Cependant, cette augmentation de l'activite nocturne n'empeche pas une diminution de l'activite sur 24 h durant les jours chauds et sans vent par rapport aux jours plus frais et vente. Bien que la presence de vent tende a limiter l'influence negative de la chaleur sur l'activite diurne, le vent n'a pas d'effet a l'echelle de la journee. Abstract

Balancing energetic requirements is a complex process governed by the current condition of the animal, its physiological state, and by the local environment. In response to these factors, animals are expected to adapt their activity patterns. Based on continuous monitoring of 14 GPS-collared animals in southern France, we studied how environmental conditions and reproductive life-cycle periods shape the monthly activity patterns of free-ranging female mouflon (Ovis gmelini musimon x Ovis sp. (Blyth, 1841)). More specifically, we analyzed total daily activity, diurnal activity, length of activity bouts, and number of activity bouts. We performed multivariate analyses to account for the relationship between several intercorrelated explanatory variables and monthly activity variables. Mouflon decreased their daily activity, diurnal activity, and length of activity bouts during the hot summer months. Such changes might allow animals to reduce thermoregulation costs. The resulting higher activity in winter compared with summer indicates that summer is the most limiting period for large herbivores in Mediterranean area. Both the number of active bouts and the daily activity increased during spring, when females have access to increased food quality, which ensures a faster digestion, and when they may face high energetic requirements owing to reproduction. Couvrir ses besoins energetiques est un processus complexe qui varie en fonction des conditions actuelles de l'animal, de son statut physiologique et de l'environnement local. En reponse a ces facteurs, les animaux sont supposes adapter leur rythme d'activite. A partir d'un suivi continu de 14 animaux equipes de colliers GPS dans le sud de la France, nous avons etudie comment les conditions environnementales et les periodes du cycle de reproduction modifiaient le rythme d'activite mensuel de femelles de mouflon (Ovis gmelini musimon x Ovis sp. (Blyth, 1841)) en nature. Plus specifiquement, nous avons analyse l'activite journaliere, l'activite diurne, la duree des phases d'activite et le nombre quotidien de phases d'activite. Nous avons utilise des analyses multivariees afin de prendre en compte les relations entre les nombreuses variables explicatives co-lineaires et les variables d'activite mensuelle. Les mouflons diminuent leur activite journaliere, leur activite diurne et la duree des phases d'activite durant les mois chauds de l'ete. De tels changements devraient permettre aux animaux de reduire les couts de la thermoregulation. La plus forte activite observee en hiver par rapport a l'ete indique que l'ete est la periode la plus limitante pour les grands herbivores vivant en zone mediterraneenne. 30. Making sense of ultrahigh‐resolution movement data: A new algorithm for inferring sites of interest

Abstract

Decomposing the life track of an animal into behavioral segments is a fundamental challenge for movement ecology. The proliferation of high‐resolution data, often collected many times per second, offers much opportunity for understanding animal movement. However, the sheer size of modern data sets means there is an increasing need for rapid, novel computational techniques to make sense of these data. Most existing methods were designed with smaller data sets in mind and can thus be prohibitively slow. Here, we introduce a method for segmenting high‐resolution movement trajectories into sites of interest and transitions between these sites. This builds on a previous algorithm of Benhamou and Riotte‐Lambert (2012). Adapting it for use with high‐resolution data. The data’s resolution removed the need to interpolate between successive locations, allowing us to increase the algorithm’s speed by approximately two orders of magnitude with essentially no drop in accuracy. Furthermore, we incorporate a color scheme for testing the level of confidence in the algorithm's inference (high = green, medium = amber, low = red). We demonstrate the speed and accuracy of our algorithm with application to both simulated and real data (Alpine cattle at 1 Hz resolution). On simulated data, our algorithm correctly identified the sites of interest for 99% of “high confidence” paths. For the cattle data, the algorithm identified the two known sites of interest: a watering hole and a milking station. It also identified several other sites which can be related to hypothesized environmental drivers (e.g., food). Our algorithm gives an efficient method for turning a long, high‐resolution movement path into a schematic representation of broadscale decisions, allowing a direct link to existing point‐to‐point analysis techniques such as optimal foraging theory. It is encoded into an R package called SitesInterest, so should serve as a valuable tool for making sense of these increasingly large data streams.

Abstract

Ticks are major vectors of various pathogens of health importance, such as bacteria, viruses and parasites. The problems associated with ticks and vector-borne pathogens are increasing in mountain areas, particularly in connection with global climate change. We collected ticks (n = 2,081) from chamois and mouflon in 4 mountainous areas of France. We identified 6 tick species: Ixodes ricinus, Rhipicephalus bursa, Rh. sanguineus s.l., Haemaphysalis sulcata, H. punctata and Dermacentor marginatus. We observed a strong variation in tick species composition among the study sites, linked in particular to the climate of the sites. We then analysed 791 ticks for DNA of vector-borne pathogens: Babesia/Theileria spp., Borrelia burgdorferi s.l., Anaplasma phagocytophilum, A. marginale, A. ovis, and Rickettsia of the spotted fever group (SFG). Theileria ovis was detected only in Corsica in Rh. bursa. Babesia venatorum (2 sites), Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. (B. afzelii and B. garinii; 2 sites) and Anaplasma phagocytophilum (3 sites) were detected in I. ricinus. Anaplasma ovis was detected at one site in I. ricinus and Rh. sanguineus s.l. SFG Rickettsia were detected at all the study sites: R. monacensis and R. helvetica in I. ricinus at the 3 sites where this tick is present; R. massiliae in Rh. sanguineus s.l. (1 site); and R. hoogstraalii and Candidatus R. barbariae in Rh. bursa in Corsica. These results show that there is a risk of tick-borne diseases for humans and domestic and wild animals frequenting these mountain areas.

Abstract

Environmental conditions experienced during early growth and development markedly shape phenotypic traits. Consequently, individuals of the same cohort may show similar life‐history tactics throughout life. Conditions experienced later in life, however, could fine‐tune these initial differences, either increasing (cumulative effect) or decreasing (compensatory effect) the magnitude of cohort variation with increasing age. Our novel comparative analysis that quantifies cohort variation in individual body size trajectories shows that initial cohort variation dissipates throughout life, and that lifetime patterns change both across species with different paces of life and between sexes. We used longitudinal data on body size (mostly assessed using mass) from 11 populations of large herbivores spread along the “slow‐fast” continuum of life histories. We first quantified cohort variation using mixture models to identify clusters of cohorts with similar initial size. We identified clear cohort clusters in all species except the one with the slowest pace of life, revealing that variation in early size is structured among cohorts and highlighting typological differences among cohorts. Growth trajectories differed among cohort clusters, highlighting how early size is a fundamental determinant of lifetime growth patterns. In all species, among‐cohort variation in size peaked at the start of life, then quickly decreased with age and stabilized around mid‐life. Cohort variation was lower in species with a slower than a faster pace of life, and vanished at prime age in species with the slowest pace of life. After accounting for viability selection, compensatory/catch‐up growth in early life explained much of the decrease in cohort variation. Females showed less phenotypic variability and stronger compensatory/catch‐up growth than males early in life, whereas males showed more progressive changes throughout life.
