We present both a disc-wind model on the optical/UV emission continuum and CLOUDY modelling on the spectral lines of the tidal disruption event (TDE) iPTF16axa to understand the disc-wind emission and the properties of the atmosphere that impacts the line luminosity of the TDE. Assuming the optical/UV emission from the wind due to the disc super-Eddington phase, we use the steady structured disc-wind model with a spherical wind with constant velocity to fit the observations on multiple days. The extracted parameters are stellar-mass $M_{\star} = 6.20 \pm 1.19 M_{\odot}$, disc radiative efficiency $\log_{\rm 10}(\eta) = -1.22 \pm 1.327$, wind inner radius $r_l = (2.013 \pm 0.551) \times 10^{14}~{\rm cm}$ and velocity $v_w = 18999.4 \pm 1785.1 ~{\rm km~s^{-1}}$. The photosphere temperature for wind emission is $ \sim 2 \times 10^4~{\rm K}$ and the disc single blackbody temperature is $\sim 0.995 \times 10^5~{\rm K}$. We also perform CLOUDY modelling to explain the observed He and H line luminosities that estimate a wind inner radius $r_l = 7.07 \times 10^{14}~{\rm cm}$ and velocity $v_w = 1.3 \times 10^4~{\rm km~s^{-1}}$. The independent analyses of iPTF16axa using CLOUDY and disc-wind models show comparable results that agree with observations. The CLOUDY modelling finds that both the super solar abundance of He and a smaller He II line optical depth is responsible for the enhancement of He II line luminosity over the H$\alpha$ line luminosity. The super-solar abundance of He II agrees with a relatively large stellar mass and suggests that the disrupted star might have been a red giant., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

Here we present our current updates of the gas-phase chemical reaction rates and molecular lines in the spectral synthesis code CLOUDY, and its implications in spectroscopic modelling of various astrophysical environments. We include energy levels, radiative and collisional rates for HF, CF$^+$, HC$_3$N, ArH$^+$, HCl, HCN, CN, CH, and CH$_2$. Simultaneously, we expand our molecular network involving these molecules. For this purpose, we have added 561 new reactions and have updated the existing 165 molecular reaction rates involving these molecules. As a result, CLOUDY now predicts all the lines arising from these nine molecules. In addition, we also update H$_2$--H$_2$ collisional data up to rotational levels $J$=31 for $v$=0. We demonstrate spectroscopic simulations of these molecules for a few astrophysical environments. Our existing model for globules in the Crab nebula successfully predicts the observed column density of ArH$^+$. Our model predicts a detectable amount of HeH$^+$, OH$^+$, and CH$^+$ for the Crab nebula. We also model the ISM towards HD185418, W31C, NGC 253, and our predictions match with most of the observed column densities within the observed error bars. Very often molecular lines trace various physical conditions. Hence, this update will be very supportive for spectroscopic modelling of various astrophysical environments, particularly involving sub-millimeter and mid-infrared observations using ALMA and JWST, respectively., Comment: 40 pages, 6 figures, 18 tables, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We report a detailed modelling of soft X-ray emission lines from two stellar-wind fed Galactic high mass X-ray binary (HMXB) systems, Cyg X-3 and 4U 1538-522, and estimate physical parameters, e.g., hydrogen density, radiation field, chemical abundances, wind velocity, etc. The spectral synthesis code CLOUDY is utilized for this modelling. We model highly ionised X-ray spectral lines such as Fe XXV (6.700 keV), Fe XXVI (6.966 keV), and reproduce the observed line flux values. We find that for Cyg X--3 and 4U 1538-522, the inner radius of the ionised gas is at a distance of 10$^{12.25}$ cm and 10$^{10.43}$ cm respectively from the primary star, which is the main source of ionisation. The densities of the ionised gas for Cyg X--3 and 4U 1538--522 are found to be $\sim$ 10$^{11.35}$ cm$^{-3}$ and 10$^{11.99}$ cm$^{-3}$, respectively. The corresponding wind velocities are 2000 km s$^{-1}$ and 1500 km s$^{-1}$. The respective predicted hydrogen column densities for Cyg X--3 and 4U 1538--522 are $10^{23.2}$ cm$^{-2}$ and 10$^{22.25}$ cm$^{-2}$. In addition, we find that a magnetic field affects the strength of the spectral lines through cyclotron cooling. Hence, we perform separate model comparisons including a magnetic field for both the sources. Most of the parameters, except the hydrogen column density, have similar values with and without a magnetic field. We estimate that the most probable strength of the magnetic field for Cyg X--3 and 4U 1538--522, where the Fe XXV and Fe XXVI lines originate, is $\sim$ 10$^{2.5}$G., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 10 pages, 8 figures and 10 tables

Dissociation of molecular hydrogen by secondary electrons produced by cosmic ray or X-ray ionization plays a crucial role in the chemistry of the densest part of molecular clouds. Here we study the effect of the mean kinetic energy of secondary electrons on this process. We compare predictions using a range of secondary electron energies and predictions of the cross-sections with the values in the UMIST database. We find that the predicted column densities change by nearly one dex., corrected minor typo

The gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows provide an unique opportunity to study the interstellar medium (ISM) of star-forming galaxies at high-redshift. The GRB-DLAs (damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorbers) contain a large neutral hydrogen column density, N(H I), and are observed against the GRB afterglow. A large fraction of GRB-DLAs show presence of molecular hydrogen (H$_2$) which is an indicator of star-formation. Hence it is important to study those GRB-DLAs which have H$_2$ lines to decipher and understand their physical conditions. The GRB-DLAs 121024A and 120815A, situated at redshift 2.30 and 2.36 respectively, are two such important H$_2$-bearing GRB-DLAs. Besides H$_2$, these two GRB-DLAs also show many metal lines. In this work we have carried out a detail numerical study on the H$_2$ lines, as well as on those metal lines, in GRB-DLAs 121024A and 120815A self-consistently. We use the spectral synthesis code CLOUDY for this study. This modeling helps us to determine the underlying physical conditions which give rise such lines and hence to understand these two GRB-DLAs in much more detail than any other previous investigation. We find that the hydrogen densities for these two H$_2$-bearing DLAs are $\geq$ 60 cm$^{-3}$. Moreover our study infers that the linear sizes are $\leq 17.7$ pc for these two GRB-DLAs, and the mean gas temperatures averaged over the cloud thickness, are $\leq$ 140 K., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 6 tables. We perform photoionization modeling of the dusty nova V1280 Scorpii (V1280 Sco) with an aim to study the changes in the physical and chemical parameters. We model pre and post dust phase, optical and near-Infrared (NIR), spectra using the photoionization code \textsc{cloudy}, v.17.02, considering a two-component (low density and high density region) model. From the best-fit model, we find that the temperature and luminosity of the central ionizing source in the pre-dust phase are in the range 1.32 - 1.50 $\times 10^4$ K and 2.95 - 3.16 $\times 10^{36}$ ergs$^{-1}$, respectively, which increase to 1.58 - 1.62 $\times 10^4$ K and 3.23 - 3.31 $\times 10^{36}$ ergs$^{-1}$, respectively, in the post-dust phase. It is found that a very high hydrogen density ($\sim 10^{13} - 10^{14}$ cm$^{-3}$) is required for the generation of spectra properly. Dust condensation conditions are achieved at high ejecta density ($\sim 3.16 \times 10^{8}$cm$^{-3}$) and low temperature ($\sim$2000 K) in the outer region of the ejecta. It is found that a mixture of small (0.005 - 0.25$\mu$m) amorphous carbon dust grains and large (0.03 - 3.0$\mu$m) astrophysical silicate dust grains iis present n the ejecta in the post-dust phase. Our model yields very high elemental abundance values as C/H = 13.5 - 20, N/H = 250, O/H = 27 - 35, by number, relative to solar in the ejecta, during the pre-dust phase, which decrease in the post-dust phase., Comment: Accepted on 02 November 2021, for publication in The Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

Low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) have a wide range of X-ray properties which can be utilised to reveal many physical conditions of the associated accretion discs. We use the spectral synthesis code CLOUDY to perform a detailed modelling of neutron star LMXBs GX 13+1, MXB 1659--298, 4U 1323--62 and XB 1916--053; and characterise the underlying physical conditions, such as density, radiation field, metallicity, wind velocity, etc. For this purpose we model highly ionised spectra of Fe, Ca, S, Si, Mg, Al in the soft X-ray band, and compare the predicted line flux ratios with the observed values. We also find that the strength and profile of these spectral lines get modified in the presence of magnetic field in the accretion disc. Using this, we estimate an upper limit of the existing magnetic field to be about a few hundred to a few thousand G in the accretion discs of these four LMXBs., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 11 pages, 9 tables and 10 figures

We perform detailed spectroscopic analysis and numerical modelling of an H2-bearing damped Lyman-alpha absorber (DLA) at zabs = 2.05 towards the quasar FBQS J2340-0053. Metal absorption features arise from fourteen components spread over $\Delta v_{90}$ = 114 km s$^{-1}$, seven of which harbour H2. Column densities of atomic and molecular species are derived through Voigt profile analysis of their absorption lines. We measure total N(H I), N(H2) and N(HD) to be 20.35+/-0.05, 17.99+/-0.05 and 14.28+/-0.08 (log cm$^{-2}$) respectively. H2 is detected in the lowest six rotational levels of the ground vibrational state. The DLA has metallicity, Z = 0.3 Z$_\sun$ ([S/H] = -0.52+/-0.06) and dust-to-gas ratio, $\kappa$ = 0.34+/-0.07. Numerical models of the H2 components are constrained individually to understand the physical structure of the DLA. We conclude that the DLA is subjected to the metagalactic background radiation and cosmic ray ionization rate of $\sim$ 10$^{-15.37}$ s$^{-1}$. Dust grains in this DLA are smaller than grains in the Galactic interstellar medium. The inner molecular regions of the H2 components have density, temperature and gas pressure in the range 30-120 cm$^{-3}$, 140-360 K and 7,000-23,000 cm$^{-3}$ K respectively. Micro-turbulent pressure is a significant constituent of the total pressure, and can play an important role in these innermost regions. Our H2 component models enable us to constrain component-wise N(H I), and elemental abundances of sulphur, silicon, iron and carbon. We present here a method to estimate physical parameters of novae systems using an extensive grid of photoionization models for novae. We use the photoionization code CLOUDY to construct grid of models covering a wide range of different parameters, e.g. total hydrogen density ($n_H$), source temperature ($T_{BB}$) and luminosity ($L$), inner radius ($R_{in}$) and thickness of ejecta ($\Delta R$), keeping other elements at solar metallicity. In this way, a total of 1792 models have been generated. From the model generated spectra which cover a wide wavelength region from ultra-violet to infrared, we calculate ratios of hydrogen and helium emission lines fluxes which are generally strong in novae spectra. We show that physical parameters associated with novae system could be estimated by comparing these line ratios with those obtained from observed spectra. We elaborate the idea with examples and estimate the parameter values in case of few other novae. The gas kinetic temperature ($T_K$) of various interstellar environments is often inferred from observations that can deduce level populations of atoms, ions, or molecules using spectral line observations; H I 21 cm is perhaps the most widely used with a long history. Usually the H I 21 cm line is assumed to be in thermal equilibrium and the populations are given by the Boltzmann distribution. A variety of processes, many involving Lyman alpha ($Ly\alpha$), can affect the 21 cm line. Here we show how this is treated in the spectral simulation code Cloudy, and present numerical simulations of environments where this temperature indicator is used, with a detailed treatment of the physical processes that determine level populations within $H^0$. We discuss situations where this temperature indicator traces $T_K$, cases where they fail, as well as the effects of $Ly\alpha$ pumping on the 21 cm spin temperature. The Orion Bar is one of the nearest and best-studied photodissociation or photon-dominated regions (PDRs). Observations reveal the presence of H2 lines from vibrationally or rotationally excited upper levels that suggest warm gas temperatures (400 to 700 K). However, standard models of PDRs are unable to reproduce such warm rotational temperatures. In this paper we attempt to explain these observations with new comprehensive models which extend from the H+ region through the Bar and include the magnetic field in the equation of state. We adopt the model parameters from our previous paper which successfully reproduced a wide variety of spectral observations across the Bar. In this model the local cosmic-ray density is enhanced above the galactic background, as is the magnetic field, and which increases the cosmic-ray heating elevating the temperature in the molecular region. The pressure is further enhanced above the gas pressure in the H+ region by the momentum transferred from the absorbed starlight. Here we investigate whether the observed H2 lines can be reproduced with standard assumptions concerning the grain photoelectric emission. Rate coefficients for rotational transitions in H_2 induced by H_2 impact are presented. Extensive quantum mechanical coupled-channel calculations based on a recently published (H_2)_2 potential energy surface were performed. Our understanding of physical processes in Photodissociation regions or Photon Dominated Regions (PDRs) largely depends on the ability of spectral synthesis codes to reproduce the observed infrared emission-line spectrum. In this paper, we explore the sensitivity of a single PDR model to microphysical details. Our calculations use the Cloudy spectral synthesis code, recently modified to include a wealth of PDR physical processes. We show how the chemical/thermal structure of a PDR, along with the calculated spectrum, changes when the treatment of physical processes such as grain physics and atomic/molecular rates are varied. We find a significant variation in the intensities of PDR emission lines, depending on different treatments of the grain physics. We also show how different combinations of the cosmic-ray ionization rate, inclusion of grain-atom/ion charge transfer, and the grain size distribution can lead to very similar results for the chemical structure. The spatial distribution of the cosmic-ray flux is important in understanding the Interstellar Medium (ISM) of the Galaxy. This distribution can be analyzed by studying different molecular species along different sight lines whose abundances are sensitive to the cosmic-ray ionization rate. Recently several groups have reported an enhanced cosmic-ray ionization rate in diffuse clouds compared to the standard value, zeta(average)=2.5e-17 s^-1, measured toward dense molecular clouds. In an earlier work we reported an enhancement in the cosmic ray rate of 20 towards HD185418. McCall et al. have reported enhancements of 48 towards zeta Persei based on the observed abundance of H$_{3}^+ while Le Petit et al. found a cosmic ray enhancement of ~10 to be consistent with their models for this same sight line. Here we revisit zeta Persei and perform a detailed calculation using a self-consistent treatment of the hydrogen chemistry, grain physics, energy and ionization balance, and excitation physics. We show that the value of zeta deduced from the H$_{3}^+$ column density in the diffuse region of the sightline depends strongly on the properties of the grains because they remove free electrons and change the hydrogen chemistry. The observations are largely consistent with a cosmic ray enhancement of 40, with several diagnostics indicating higher values. We present results of our numerical simulation of three H2-bearing damped Lyman alpha absorbers (DLAs) in the redshift interval ~ 2-3. The systems we have modelled are the DLAs at zabs = 2.3377 towards the quasar LBQS 1232+0815, at zabs = 2.41837 towards SDSS J143912.04+111740.5 and at zabs = 2.6265 towards FBQS J081240.6+320808. We have used the spectral synthesis code CLOUDY to simulate the physical environment of these DLAs, and constrain the density, radiation field, geometry and dust-grain properties of the DLAs self-consistently based on the observed column densities of various atomic and molecular species such as H I, fine structure lines of C I and the rotational level population of H2. In our models, we explore the effect of grain size distribution on the predicted column densities of different species. Within the allowed uncertainties in the inferred dust-to-gas ratio, both models with standard ISM grains and smaller-sized grains reproduce the observations equally well. Improved constraints on dust-to-gas ratio and line-of-sight extinction are important for probing the grain size distribution in high-z DLAs. We find the H2-bearing clouds to have line-of-sight thickness in the range 1-6 pc, consistent with what has been found using partial coverage or 21-cm observations in some high-z DLAs., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 19 pages, 8 figures, 7 tables

We have developed a complete model of the hydrogen molecule as part of the spectral simulation code Cloudy. Our goal is to apply this to spectra of high-redshift star-forming regions where H2 absorption is seen, but where few other details are known, to understand its implication for star formation. The microphysics of H2 is intricate, and it is important to validate these numerical simulations in better-understood environments. This paper studies a well-defined line-of-sight through the Galactic interstellar medium (ISM) as a test of the microphysics and methods we use. We present a self-consistent calculation of the observed absorption-line spectrum to derive the physical conditions in the ISM towards HD185418, a line-of-sight with many observables. We deduce density, temperature, local radiation field, cosmic ray ionization rate, chemical composition and compare these conclusions with conditions deduced from analytical calculations. We find a higher density, similar abundances, and require a cosmic ray flux enhanced over the Galactic background value, consistent with enhancements predicted by MHD simulations.

Hydrostatic pressure effects on the temperature- and magnetic field dependencies of the in-plane and out-of-plane magnetization of the bi-layered perovskite Sr 3 Ru 2 O 7 have been studied by SQUID magnetometer measurements under a hydrostatic helium-gas pressure. The anomalously enhanced low-temperature value of the paramagnetic susceptibility has been found to systematically decrease with increasing pressure. The effect is accompanied by an increase of the temperature T max of a pronounced peak of susceptibility. Thus, magnetization measurements under hydrostatic pressure reveal that the lattice contraction in the structure of Sr 3 Ru 2 O 7 promotes antiferromagnetism and not ferromagnetism. The effects can be explained by the enhancement of the inter-bi-layer antiferromagnetic spin coupling, driven by the shortening of the superexchange path, and suppression, due to the band-broadening effect, of competing itinerant ferromagnetic correlations.

It has long been known that infrared fine structure lines of abundant ions, like the [O III] 88 micron line, can become optically thick in H II regions under certain high luminosity conditions. This could mitigate their potential as diagnostic tools, especially if the source is too dusty for optical spectroscopy to otherwise determine the system's parameters. We examined a series of photoionization calculations which were designed to push the nebulae into the limit where many IR lines should be quite optically thick. We find that radiative transfer effects do not significantly change the observed emission line spectrum. This is due to a combination of grain absorption of the hydrogen ionizing continuum and the fact that the correction for stimulated emission in these lines is large. Given these results, and the likelihood that real objects have non-thermal line broadening, it seems unlikely that line optical depth presents a problem in using these lines as diagnostics of the physical conditions or chemical composition., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, to be published in the February 2003 issue of the PASP

(Abridged) We carried out a comprehensive far-ultraviolet (UV) survey of ^12CO and H_2 column densities along diffuse molecular Galactic sight lines in order to explore in detail the relationship between CO and H_2. We measured new CO abundances from HST spectra, new H_2 abundances from FUSE data, and new CH, CH^+, and CN abundances from the McDonald and European Southern Observatories. A plot of log N(CO) versus log N(H_2) shows that two power-law relationships are needed for a good fit of the entire sample, with a break located at log N(CO, cm^-2) = 14.1 and log N(H_2) = 20.4, corresponding to a change in production route for CO in higher-density gas. Similar logarithmic plots among all five diatomic molecules allow us to probe their relationships, revealing additional examples of dual slopes in the cases of CO versus CH (break at log N = 14.1, 13.0), CH^+ versus H_2 (13.1, 20.3), and CH^+ versus CO (13.2, 14.1). These breaks are all in excellent agreement with each other, confirming the break in the CO versus H_2 relationship, as well as the one-to-one correspondence between CH and H_2 abundances. Our new sight lines were selected according to detectable amounts of CO in their spectra and they provide information on both lower-density (< 100 cm^-3) and higher-density diffuse clouds. The CO versus H_2 correlation and its intrinsic width are shown to be empirically related to the changing total gas density among the sight lines of the sample. We employ both analytical and numerical chemical schemes in order to derive details of the molecular environments. In the low-density gas, where equilibrium-chemistry studies have failed to reproduce the abundance of CH^+, our numerical analysis shows that nonequilibrium chemistry must be employed for correctly predicting the abundances of both CH^+ and CO., 40 pages in emulateapj style, to appear in the Astrophysical Journal

Previous work has shown the Orion Bar to be an interface between ionized and molecular gas, viewed roughly edge on, which is excited by the light from the Trapezium cluster. Much of the emission from any star-forming region will originate from such interfaces, so the Bar serves as a foundation test of any emission model. Here we combine X-ray, optical, IR and radio data sets to derive emission spectra along the transition from H+ to H0 to H2 regions. We then reproduce the spectra of these layers with a simulation that simultaneously accounts for the detailed microphysics of the gas, the grains, and molecules, especially H2 and CO. The magnetic field, observed to be the dominant pressure in another region of the Orion Nebula, is treated as a free parameter, along with the density of cosmic rays. Our model successfully accounts for the optical, IR and radio observations across the Bar by including a significant magnetic pressure and also heating by an excess density of cosmic rays, which we suggest is due to cosmic rays being trapped in the compressed magnetic field. In the Orion Bar, as we had previously found in M17, momentum carried by radiation and winds from the newly formed stars pushes back and compresses the surrounding gas. There is a rough balance between outward momentum in starlight and the total pressure in atomic and molecular gas surrounding the H+ region. If the gas starts out with a weak magnetic field, the starlight from a newly formed cluster will push back the gas and compress the gas, magnetic field, and cosmic rays until magnetic pressure becomes an important factor., Comment: 32 pages, including 10 figures. The hydrogen ionization and dissociation front around an ultraviolet radiation source should merge when the ratio of ionizing photon flux to gas density is sufficiently low and the spectrum is sufficiently hard. This regime is particularly relevant to the molecular knots that are commonly found in evolved planetary nebulae, such as the Helix Nebula, where traditional models of photodissociation regions have proved unable to explain the high observed luminosity in H_2 lines. In this paper we present results for the structure and steady-state dynamics of such advection-dominated merged fronts, calculated using the Cloudy plasma/molecular physics code. We find that the principal destruction processes for H_2 are photoionization by extreme ultraviolet radiation and charge exchange reactions with protons, both of which form H_2^+, which rapidly combines with free electrons to undergo dissociative recombination. Advection moves the dissociation front to lower column densities than in the static case, which vastly increases the heating in the partially molecular gas due to photoionization of He^0, H_2, and H^0. This causes a significant fraction of the incident bolometric flux to be re-radiated as thermally excited infrared H_2 lines, with the lower excitation pure rotational lines arising in 1000 K gas and higher excitation H_2 lines arising in 2000 K gas, as is required to explain the H_2 spectrum of the Helix cometary knots., 4 pages, accepted by ApJL, scheduled December 20 issue

The southwestern (SW) part of the Galactic H II region M17 contains an obscured ionization front that is most easily seen at infrared and radio wavelengths. It is nearly edge-on, thus offering an excellent opportunity to study the way in which the gas changes from fully ionized to molecular as radiation from the ionizing stars penetrates into the gas. M17 is also one of the very few H II regions for which the magnetic field strength can be measured in the photodissociation region ( PDR) that forms the interface between the ionized and molecular gas. Here we model an observed line of sight through the gas cloud, including the H+, H0 (PDR), and molecular layers, in a fully self-consistent single calculation. An interesting aspect of the M17 SW bar is that the PDR is very extended. We show that the strong magnetic field that is observed to be present inevitably leads to a very deep PDR, because the structure of the neutral and molecular gas is dominated by magnetic pressure, rather than by gas pressure, as previously had been supposed.We also show that a wide variety of observed facts can be explained if a hydrostatic geometry prevails, in which the gas pressure from an inner X-ray hot bubble and the outward momentum of the stellar radiation field compress the gas and its associated magnetic field in the PDR, as has already been shown to occur in the Orion Nebula. The magnetic field compression may also amplify the local cosmic-ray density. Orion's Veil is an absorbing screen that lies along the line of sight to the Orion H II region. It consists of two or more layers of gas that must lie within a few parsecs of the Trapezium cluster. Our previous work considered the Veil as a whole and found that the magnetic field dominates the energetics of the gas in at least one component. Here we use high-resolution STIS UV spectra that resolve the two velocity components in absorption and determine the conditions in each. We derive a volume hydrogen density, 21 cm spin temperature, turbulent velocity, and kinetic temperature, for each. We combine these estimates with magnetic field measurements to find that magnetic energy significantly dominates turbulent and thermal energies in one component, while the other component is close to equipartition between turbulent and magnetic energies. We observe molecular hydrogen absorption for highly excited v, J levels that are photoexcited by the stellar continuum, and detect blueshifted S III and P III. These ions must arise from ionized gas between the mostly neutral portions of the Veil and the Trapezium and shields the Veil from ionizing radiation. We find that this layer of ionized gas is also responsible for He I absorption in the Veil, which resolves a 40-year-old debate on the origin of He I absorption towards the Trapezium. Finally, we determine that the ionized and mostly atomic layers of the Veil will collide in less than 85,000 years., 43 pages, 15 figures, to be published in ApJ

We study the physical conditions in DLAs, using a sample of 33 systems toward 26 QSOs acquired for a recently completed survey of H_2 by Ledoux et al. (2003). We use the column densities of H_2 in different rotational levels, together with those of C I, C I*, C I**, C II* and singly ionized atomic species to discuss the kinetic temperature, the density of hydrogen and the electronic density in the gas together with the ambient UV radiation field. Detailed comparisons are made between the observed properties in DLAs, the interstellar medium (ISM) of the Galaxy, LMC and SMC. The mean kinetic temperature of the gas corresponding to DLA subcomponents in which H_2 absorption line is detected, derived from the ortho-to-para ratio (153+/-78 K), is higher than that measured in the ISM (77+/-17 K) and the Magellanic clouds (82+/-21 K). Typical pressure in these components (corresponding to T = 100-300 K and n = 10-200 cm^-3), measured using C I fine-structure excitation, are higher than what is measured along ISM sightlines. This is consistent with the corresponding higher values for N(H_2,J=2)/N(H_2,J=0) seen in DLAs. From the column densities of the high-J rotational levels, we derive that the typical radiation field in the H_2 bearing components is of the order of or slightly higher than the mean UV field in the Galactic ISM. Determination of electron density in the gas with H_2 and C I show the ionization rate is similar to that of a cold neutral medium (CNM) in a moderate radiation field. This, together with the fact that we see H_2 in 13-20% of the DLAs, can be used to conclude that DLAs at z>1.9 could contribute as much as 50% star formation rate density seen in Lyman break galaxies (LBGs). Much of the baryonic matter in the Universe is in the form of H2 which includes most of the gas in galactic and extragalactic interstellar clouds. Molecular hydrogen plays a significant role in establishing the thermal balance in many astrophysical environments and can be important as a spectral diagnostic of the gas. Modeling and interpretation of observations of such environments requires a quantitatively complete and accurate treatment of H2. Using this micro-physical model of H2, illustrative calculations of prototypical astrophysical environments are presented. We have performed a series of calculations designed to reproduce infrared diagnostics used to determine physical conditions in star forming regions. We self-consistently calculate the thermal and chemical structure of an H II region and photodissociation region (PDR) that are in pressure equilibrium. This differs from previous work, which used separate calculations for each gas phase. Our calculations span a wide range of stellar temperatures, gas densities, and ionization parameters. We describe improvements made to the spectral synthesis code Cloudy that made these calculations possible. These include the addition of a molecular network with ~1000 reactions involving 68 molecular species and improved treatment of the grain physics. Data from the Spitzer First Look Survey, along with other archives, are used to derive important physical characteristics of the H II region and PDR. These include stellar temperatures, electron densities, ionization parameters, UV radiation flux, and PDR density. Finally, we calculate the contribution of the H II region to PDR emission line diagnostics, which allows for a more accurate determination of physical conditions in the PDR., Comment: 60 pages, 35 figures, to be published in the Astrophysical Journal. Orion's veil consists of several layers of largely neutral gas lying between us and the main ionizing stars of the Orion nebula. It is visible in 21cm H I absorption and in optical and UV absorption lines of H I and other species. Toward the Trapezium, the veil has two remarkable properties, high magnetic field (~100 microGauss) and a surprising lack of molecular hydrogen given its total hydrogen column density. Here we compute photoionization models of the veil to establish its gas density and its distance from the Trapezium. We use a greatly improved model of the hydrogen molecule that determines level populations in ~1e5 rotational/vibrational levels and provides improved estimates of molecular hydrogen destruction via the Lyman-Werner bands. Our best fit photoionization models place the veil 1-3 pc in front of the star at a density of 1e3-1e4 cubic centimeters. Magnetic energy dominates the energy of non-thermal motions in at least one of the 21cm H I velocity components. Therefore, the veil is the first interstellar environment where magnetic dominance appears to exist. We find that the low ratio of molecular to atomic hydrogen (< 1e-4) is a consequence of high UV flux incident upon the veil due to its proximity to the Trapezium stars and the absence of small grains in the region., 45 pages, 20 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ
