1. The role of homophily in the emergence of opinion controversies

Abstract

Understanding the emergence of strong controversial issues in modern societies is a key issue in opinion studies. A commonly diffused idea is the fact that the increasing of homophily in social networks, due to the modern ICT, can be a driving force for opinion polariation. In this paper we address the problem with a modelling approach following three basic steps. We first introduce a network morphogenesis model to reconstruct network structures where homophily can be tuned with a parameter. We show that as homophily increases the emergence of marked topological community structures in the networks raises. Secondly, we perform an opinion dynamics process on homophily dependent networks and we show that, contrary to the common idea, homophily helps consensus formation. Finally, we introduce a tunable external media pressure and we show that, actually, the combination of homophily and media makes the media effect less effective and leads to strongly polarized opinion clusters., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

Atomically precise tailoring of graphene can enable unusual transport pathways and new nanometer-scale functional devices. Here we describe a recipe for the controlled production of highly regular "5-5-8" line defects in graphene by means of simultaneous electron irradiation and Joule heating by applied electric current. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy reveals individual steps of the growth process. Extending earlier theoretical work suggesting valley-discriminating capabilities of a graphene 5-5-8 line defect, we perform first-principles calculations of transport and find a strong energy dependence of valley polarization of the charge carriers across the defect. These findings inspire us to propose a compact electrostatically gated "valley valve" device, a critical component for valleytronics.

Abstract

Spectral and transport properties of small molecule single-crystal organic semiconductors have been theoretically analyzed focusing on oligoacenes, in particular on the series from naphthalene to rubrene and pentacene aiming to show that the inclusion of different electron-phonon couplings is of paramount importance to interpret accurately the properties of prototype organic semiconductors. While, in the case of rubrene, the coupling between charge carriers and low frequency inter-molecular modes is sufficient for a satisfactory description of spectral and transport properties, the inclusion of electron coupling to both low frequency inter-molecular and high frequency intra-molecular vibrational modes is needed to account for the temperature dependence of transport properties in smaller oligoacenes., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, Review

Abstract

Spectral and transport properties of the quasi two-dimensional adiabatic Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model are studied adjusting the parameters in order to model rubrene single-crystal field effect transistors with small but finite density of injected charge carriers. We show that, with increasing temperature $T$, the chemical potential moves into the tail of the density of states corresponding to localized states, but this is not enough to drive the system into an insulating state. The mobility along different crystallographic directions is calculated including vertex corrections which give rise to a transport lifetime one order of magnitude smaller than spectral lifetime of the states involved in the transport mechanism. With increasing temperature, the transport properties reach the Ioffe-Regel limit which is ascribed to less and less appreciable contribution of itinerant states to the conduction process. The model provides features of the mobility in close agreement with experiments: right order of magnitude, scaling as a power law $T^{-\gamma}$, with $\gamma$ close or larger than two, and correct anisotropy ratio between different in-plane directions. 6. How opinion dynamics generates group hierarchies

Abstract

We recently proposed a model coupling the evolution of the opinions of the individual with the local network topology. The opinion dynamics is based on the Bounded Confidence model. The social networks is based on a group concept where each individual is totally connected to the members of its group and is linked to the individuals of the other groups with a given probability. During a time step, the individual has to decide between discussing with a member of its own network and applying the opinion dynamics, or moving groups because it has an opinion far from the average opinion of its own group. One of the main results we obtained is that the group sizes, starting from an homogeneous situation can be strongly heterogeneous at the equilibrium state. This kind of heterogeneity can be identified in many real networks. In this paper we present the complete set of behaviours that this complex model can exhibit, at group level. 7. When group level is different from the population level: an adaptive network with the Deffuant model

Abstract

We propose a model coupling the classical opinion dynamics of the bounded confidence model, proposed by Deffuant et al., with an adaptive network forming a community or group structure. At each step, an individual can decide if it changes groups or interact on its opinion with one of its internal or external neighbour. If it decides to look at the group level, it changes groups if its opinion is far from the average of its group from more than a threshold. If it is the case, it joins the group which has proportionally the closest average opinion from its. If it decides to interact with one of its neighbour, it becomes closer in opinion to it when its opinion and the one of the selected-to-interact neighbour are less distant from the threshold. From the study of this coupled model, we discover some surprising behaviours compared to the known behaviour of the Deffuant bounded confidence model(BC): The coupled model exhibits a total consensus for an threshold value lower than the BC model; the distribution of sizes of the groups changes: some groups become larger while other decrease in size, sometimes until containing only one individual; from the point of view of the groups, the consensus remains for a large set of threshold values while, looking at the population level, there are a lot of opinion clusters., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, Proc of 5th Int. Abstract

Land use choices and activity prevalence in a selected territory are determined by individual preferences constrained by the characteristic of the analysed zone: population density, soil properties, urbanization level and other similar factors can drive individuals to make different kind of decisions about their occupations. Different approaches can be used to describe land use change, occupation prevalence and their reciprocal inter-relation. In this paper we describe two different kinds of approaches: an agent based model, centred on individual choices and an aggregated model describing the evolution of activity prevalence in terms of coupled differential equation. 9. Opinion dynamics on a group structured adaptive network

Abstract

Many models have been proposed to analyze the evolution of opinion structure due to the interaction of individuals in their social environment. Such models analyze the spreading of ideas both in completely interacting backgrounds and on social networks, where each person has a finite set of interlocutors.Moreover, the investigation on the topological structure of social networks has been the object of several analyses, both from the theoretical and the empirical point of view. In this framework a particularly important area of study involves the community structure inside social networks.In this paper we analyze the reciprocal feedback between the opinions of the individuals and the structure of the interpersonal relationships at the level of community structures. For this purpose we define a group based random network and we study how this structure co-evolves with opinion dynamics processes. We observe that the adaptive network structure affects the opinion dynamics process helping the consensus formation. Abstract

We develop a systematic algorithm to construct, classify and study exact solutions of type II A/B supergravity which are time--dependent and homogeneous and hence represent candidate cosmological backgrounds. Using the formalism of solvable Lie algebras to represent the geometry of non--compact coset manifolds U/H we are able to reduce the supergravity field equations to the geodesic equations in U/H and rephrase these latter in a completely algebraic setup by means of the so called Nomizu operator representation of covariant derivatives in solvable group manifolds. In this way a systematic method of integration of supergravity equations is provided. We show how the possible D=3 solutions are classified by non--compact subalgebras G of E8(8) and their ten--dimensional physical interpretation (oxidation) depends on the classification of the different embeddings of G inside E8(8). We give some preliminary examples of explicit solutions based on the simplest choice G=A2. We also show how, upon oxidation, these solutions provide a smooth and exact realization of the bouncing phenomenon on Weyl chamber walls envisaged by the cosmological billiards of Damour et al. We also show how this physical phenomenon is triggered by the presence of euclidean $D$--branes possibly interpretable at the microscopic level as S--branes. Abstract

Il presente lavoro illustra un innovativo sistema di facciata “a cellula” prototipato nell’ambito del progetto INCASS - sIstema iNnovativo di anCoraggio meccanico per fAcciate continue Sostenibili e Sicure. Il progetto, sviluppato nell’ambito del POR FERS CAMPANIA 2014-2020, nasce come risposta alle principali esigenze di innovazione individuate nel settore delle facciate continue, legate essenzialmente alla crescente domanda di sostenibilità e sicurezza della componentistica edilizia. La Facciata INCASS è stata progettata con lo scopo di aumentare la sostenibilità del prodotto, grazie all’introduzione di un innovativo sistema di fissaggio ad espansione geometrica non passante che si inserisce in testa al processo di trasformazione del vetro. Tale sistema è in grado di assicurare la scomponibilità della cellula, la eliminazione parziale dei sigillanti, e la eliminazione del trasporto della cella assemblatore-vetreria-assemblatore, garantendo un minor impatto ambientale nel ciclo di vita del prodotto. Più nel dettaglio il presente lavoro illustra i risultati degli studi di Life Cycle Assessment volti a validare la sostenibilità del prodotto, i risultati delle prove dinamiche effettuate per testare l’efficacia del sistema prototipato, e la correlazione numerico-sperimentale ottenuta mediante l’utilizzo di modelli agli elementi finiti.

Abstract

In the last years, the need to de-identify privacy-sensitive information within Electronic Health Records (EHRs) has become increasingly felt and extremely relevant to encourage the sharing and publication of their content in accordance with the restrictions imposed by both national and supranational privacy authorities. In the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP), several deep learning techniques for Named Entity Recognition (NER) have been applied to face this issue, significantly improving the effectiveness in identifying sensitive information in EHRs written in English. However, the lack of data sets in other languages has strongly limited their applicability and performance evaluation. To this aim, a new de-identification data set in Italian has been developed in this work, starting from the 115 COVID-19 EHRs provided by the Italian Society of Radiology (SIRM): 65 were used for training and development, the remaining 50 were used for testing. The data set was labelled following the guidelines of the i2b2 2014 de-identification track. As additional contribution, combined with the best performing Bi-LSTM + CRF sequence labeling architecture, a stacked word representation form, not yet experimented for the Italian clinical de-identification scenario, has been tested, based both on a contextualized linguistic model to manage word polysemy and its morpho-syntactic variations and on sub-word embeddings to better capture latent syntactic and semantic similarities. Finally, other cutting-edge approaches were compared with the proposed model, which achieved the best performance highlighting the goodness of the promoted approach.

Questo contributo è rivolto alla descrizione delle attività di ricerche dell'Istituto ICAR-CNR relative all'analisi automatica di immagini digitali mediche svolte all'interno di collaborazioni sceintifiche o progetti finanziati di Ricerca Industriale. Obiettivo di tali collaborazioni è lo sviluppo di nuovi strumenti intelligenti di diagnostica avanzata sia per patologie oncologiche/neuro-degenerative che per malattie della retina da utilizzare a supporto degli aspetti decisionali sulla diagnosi e per implementare nuovi protocolli di medicina di precisione. Tali strumenti per l'analisi automatica di immagini digitali mediche, sono basati su processi di individuazione, segmentazione e classificazione della zona patologica partendo da immagini digitali di preparati istologici, immagini diagnostiche (TAC, PET, MR, . . . ) e immagini del fondo oculare. Le metodologie applicate coinvolgono l'analisi quantitativa delle immagini e l'utilizzo di tecnologie di Machine Learning.

Abstract

International audience; Bitcoin-otc is a peer to peer (over-the-counter) marketplace for trading with bitcoin crypto-currency. To mitigate the risks of the p2p unsupervised exchanges, the establishment of a reliable reputation systems is needed: for this reason, a web of trust is implemented on the website. The availability of all the historic of the users interaction data makes this dataset a unique playground for studying reputation dynamics through others evaluations. We analyze the structure and the dynamics of this web of trust with a multilayer network approach distinguishing the rewarding and the punitive behaviors. We show that the rewarding and the punitive behavior have similar emergent topological properties (apart from the clustering coefficient being higher for the rewarding layer) and that the resultant reputation originates from the complex interaction of the more regular behaviors on the layers. We show which are the behaviors that correlate (i.e. the rewarding activity) or not (i.e. the punitive activity) with reputation. We show that the network activity presents bursty behaviors on both the layers and that the inequality reaches a steady value (higher for the rewarding layer) with the network evolution. Finally, we characterize the reputation trajectories and we identify prototypical behaviors associated to three classes of users: trustworthy, untrusted and controversial.

Abstract

Healthcare domain is characterized by a huge amount of data, contained in medical records, reports, test results and so on. In order to give support to healthcare workers and manage relevant data in effective and efficient way, it is important to correctly classify the unstructured parts of text, embedded in the medical documents. In this paper, we propose a classification system for medical records categorization, focused on the combination of different methodologies, based on lexical, syntactical and semantic analysis of the documents. We will show that a Classification System based on a combination of different text analysis methodologies overcomes the performances of each methodology taken alone. The obtained results will be presented in terms of Accuracy-Rejection Curves. Eventually, pro and cons of the architecture proposed and some future work will be pointed out. © 2014 The authors and IOS Press. All rights reserved.

Abstract

This study assessed changes in prevalence and distribution of HIV-1 non-subtype B viruses in Italian and immigrant patients over two decades in a province in Italy. All HIV-positive patients who underwent genotypic resistance testing were selected. Prevalence of non-subtype B viruses in 3-year periods was calculated. All sequences of non-subtype B and those provided by REGA as unassigned were analysed for phylogenetic relationships. In total, 250/1563 (16%) individuals were infected with a non-subtype B virus. Prevalence increased over time, reaching a peak (315%) in 2004-2006. In Italian patients, the most frequent subtypes were B (925%) and F1 (4%). F1 subtype was also prevalent in patients from South America (136%); in patients of African origin, CRF02-AG (549%) and G (123%) were the most frequent. HIV-1 non-subtype B infections in Italians were mostly found in patients who acquired HIV sexually. A phylogenetic relationship between F subtypes in Italian and representative HIV-1 sequences from Brazil was found. C subtypes in Italians were phylogenetically related to subtypes circulating in Brazil. Inter-subtype recombinants were also found in the latest years. The HIV-1 epidemic in Brescia province evolved to the point where about 1/3 patients recently diagnosed harboured non-B HIV subtypes. The distribution of HIV-1 non-B subtypes in Italian patients resembled that in South American patients and phylogenetic relatedness between some Italian and South American HIV-1 strains was found. The possible epidemiological link between these two populations would have been missed by looking only at risk factors for HIV acquisition declared by patients. The evidence of inter-subtype recombinants points to significant genetic assortment. Overall our results support phylogenetic analysis as a tool for epidemiological investigation in order to guide targeted prevention strategies. Copyright © 2010 Cambridge University Press.

Abstract

(i) To compare early decrease of HIV plasma viral load (pVL) after two standard-combinations of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) (ii) To evaluate variations of proviral HIV-DNA load on conditions of sustained pVL undetectability. Two different sub-studies of a multicentre prospective randomized controlled trial which compared two first-line HAART (i.e., zidovudine+lamivudine+lopinavir/ritonavir versus tenofovir+lamivudine+ efavirenz). Only patients enrolled at the coordinating centre (University of Brescia) were included in the two sub-studies. In the first sub-study, we calculated pVL decrease with respect to baseline at any of the following time-point: days 1, 3, 7, 14 and 28. Decreases of the pVL were compared between the two treatment groups. In the second sub-study, we'analyzed, variation of proviral HIV-DNA load in CD4+ T-cells from baseline to week 52 only in patients who maintained the same treatment regimen and had sustained undetectable pVL. In either studies, linear regression analysis was used to investigate what factors could influence variations of pVL and of proviral HIV-DNA load. (i) 64 patients were studied. A significant decrease of pVL was found from day 3 on, without statistically significant differences between the two study groups. However, after adjusting for possible confounders, tenofovir+lamivudine+efavirenz resulted to be associated with greater pVL decreases. (ii) 45 patients were studied. Mean proviral HIV-DNA load decreased from 1,610 (95%CI: 879-2,341) to 896 (95% CI 499-1,293) copies/106 cells (P=0.05). Linear regression analysis showed that the decrease of proviral DNA load during follow-up was independently and inversely correlated with age. Further studies are needed to compare pVL decay between antiretroviral regimens and assess whether proviral HIV-DNA load is a surrogate marker of treatment effectiveness. © 2008 Bentham Science Publishers Ltd.

Abstract

Continuous surveillance of HIV primary resistance mutations is highly important due to their potential clinical impact. All patients naive to antiretrovirals who had ≥1 genotypic resistance testing at the Institute of Infectious Diseases (Brescia, Northern Italy) between 2001 and 2006 were analyzed. Primary resistance mutations were defined using epidemiological and clinical criteria. Mutations were interpreted using the Stanford University Algorithm. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess possible predictors of primary resistance mutations. Among 569 patients, 11% presented ≥1 mutation. Prevalence of primary resistance mutations to nucleoside reverse-transcriptase inhibitors (NRTI), non-nucleoside reverse-transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTI), and protease inhibitors (PI) was 6.3%, 6%, and 1.6%, respectively. The most frequent mutations to NRTI were substitutions at position 215 (215Y in 3 patients, and 215 revertants in 16), 41L (13), 219Q (12), and 210W (10). Among mutations to NNRTI, 103N was found in 21 patients, while 181C, 188L, and 190A/S in 8, 3, and 4 patients, respectively. Fifty-one patients (9%) had high-to-intermediate resistance to ≥1 antiretroviral drug before starting the treatment. Regarding the new generation drugs, nine patients had intermediate resistance to etravirine, five patients had intermediate resistance to tipranavir, while five, one, and seven patients had low resistance to etravirine, tipranavir, and darunavir. Homosexuals were more likely to harbor a virus with primary resistance mutations (OR:2.68; 95% CI:1.44-5.00; P=0.002) while non-Italian nationality was protective (OR:0.38; 95% CI:0.17-0.86; P=0.020). Prevalence of primary resistance mutations suggests that genotypic resistance testing should be performed before starting treatment in naïve patients in Italy, particularly when NNRTI are prescribed. © 2008 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
