Abstract

This report summarizes six case studies on different aspects of the issue of evaluating investing in continuing vocational training (CVT). Part 1 (chapters 1-2) contains "Conceptual Introduction" (Jean-Marie Luttringer), which explores practical problems in considering training expenses as an investment, and "Methodological Introduction" (Alan Barrett), which discusses the merits of using qualitative and quantitative research methods in evaluating CVT investments. Part 2 (chapters 3-8) describes and analyzes continuing training schemes in six European Member States: "The Evaluation of CVT in Enterprises in Styria in Austria" (Stefan Lorenzoni, Dieter Mandl) investigates whether certain goals of CVT were achieved; "The Importance of CVT to Enterprises: A Discussion of the Agricultural Foodstuffs Sector in Denmark" (John Houman Sorenson) seeks to understand why CVT is not being used; "Accounting for Enterprise Investment in CVT in France" (J-M Luttringer, N. Pasco) discusses difficulties associated with evaluating CVT investments; "Innovative Models for Financing CVT in Germany" (Uwe Grunewald, Dick Moraal) studies four innovative models of CVT provision; "Measuring the Impact of CVT in Irish Companies" (Alan Barrett, Philip O'Connell) explores whether training and productivity growth are positively related across a sample of firms. "CVT Activity within the Packaging Sector in Italy" (Francesco Garibaldo) provides insights into how CVT can be used to cope with challenges faced by a sector. Part 3 contains two chapters: "Methodological Discussion, Conclusions, and Further Work" (Alan Barrett), which reviews each report individually before drawing general conclusions regarding methodology and "Policy Discussion, Conclusions, and Further Work" (Jean-Marie Luttringer), which examines seven problems in the assessment of training investment. Abstract

Uno degli obiettivi che ci si è posti con la ricerca «Il lavoro operaio digitalizzato. Inchiesta nell’industria metalmeccanica bolognese» è stato quello di ricostruire lo stato dell’arte dell’implementazione delle High Performance Work Practices (HPWP) nelle imprese oggetto di studio. In particolare si è inteso capire, sulla base delle esperienze e delle percezioni dei lavoratori, se e come tali pratiche sono state implementate in imprese considerate avanzate da un punto di vista tecnologico e organizzativo. Ma cosa sono le HPWP? Che relazioni hanno con Industria 4.0? Sono queste le domande al centro di questo capitolo.

Abstract

Despite the complex changes which the economies of the most industrialized countries have undergone, current interpretations of the evolution of the economic system remain extraordinarily simplistic. The popular view has been that 'Fordism', at the heart of the continued development of the capitalist world since World War II, is no longer the driving force of the economy. This article challenges the all too simplistic view of the 'old' and 'new' times thesis, arguing that transformations occurring in the post-Fordist societies incorporate elements of the old system. On the contrary, in many cases old and new are blurred together. The article discusses the features of a variety of models of the post-Fordist economy, in terms of the 'governance' of different production systems where a massive debureaucratization of work is occurring, together with the globalization of local economic systems. Abstract

Byline: Francesco Garibaldo In the last three years, FIAT AUTO recovered from a quasi-desperate financial situation and had started a new managerial pattern affording through an overall plan for business reorganisation ranging from the products to the productive process. The intervention in the productive process and thus, the organisational model, has had direct repercussions on the working conditions, which is the aspect this paper will be dealing with, referring exclusively to the Mirafiori plant in Turin. The paper will comment on the outcomes of a very recent survey organised by one of the members of the Metalworkers Union and will stress the very transitional sate of the workers' conditions up until now.

Abstract

This book takes up a critical and realistic perspective on what is happening in China, India and other Asian countries in comparison with Western countries. It avoids hiding problems and difficulties, but communicates a positive message on the possibility to proceed in achieving a better situation. In this perspective the analysis of the public policies is a key point. These policies, in the Eastern as well as in the Western countries show objective difficulties and social contradictions but also that improvement is possible. The initial chapter is completely devoted to a study of China from within. The other topics analysed in the book are related to the social and natural environment's sustainability: innovation, research and education on the one side and the life of workers on the other; also including the «invisible» people of the informal employment and the economic migrants, especially in Asia.

Abstract

The aim of this work is to analyze the development of Green Economy in the Emilia-Romagna Region. Sustainability and efficiency are seen as springs of development to be pushed overall in a period of global economic crisis. Starting from the distinction of Green Production and Green Products, the authors have investigated the evolution of the sector in the last years, in particular analyzing the number of enterprises and products with environmental certifications and their economic performance. A special focus have been made regarding the production of Renewable Energy Sources and the EU objectives. Furthermore it has been explored the Agri-food sector, underlining its relationship with the environment and the threats given by Climate Change, and on the other side the opportunities linked to agro-energies and organic productions. The authors have made some on field interviews to operators and firms of different sector in order to better understand their perspective regarding Green Economy markets. Additionally to underline some strategic guidelines to be followed by governments to better implement structural changes to raise efficiency and to further green the economical production.
