Introduction: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting multiple systems and classified under connective tissue disorders. Ocular involvement occurs in up to 30% of SLE cases, with the cornea being particularly susceptible to thinning due to immune-complex deposits and its predominantly type I collagen composition. This corneal thinning is clinically significant in glaucoma, where patients with reduced central corneal thickness (CCT) may have up to a threefold increased risk of developing glaucoma, as well as in refractive surgery. However, existing studies on CCT in SLE are limited and marked by substantial heterogeneity in methodology, technology, criteria, and participant numbers, resulting in conflicting findings. Based in our hypothesis that SLE-related corneal lysis may result in decreased CCT, this study aims to determine and compare the mean CCT values between SLE patients and healthy controls to obtain a more precise understanding of the potential relationship., Methods and Analysis: A cross-sectional observational study will be conducted, enrolling SLE patients and age-and sex-matched healthy controls recruited from ophthalmology consultations. Exclusion criteria will be applied to rule out other corneal thinning risk factors. A pilot study estimated a minimum sample size of 34 participants per group. CCT measurements will be obtained using Zeiss HD Cirrus 5,000 optical coherence tomography (OCT) on a randomly selected eye, following concordance analysis using the Kappa index. Statistical analysis will include descriptive, bivariate, and multivariate methods. The study protocol was approved by the ethics committee., Discussion: The cornea's vulnerability to thinning and lysis in SLE, which impacts CCT, is crucial for the accurate assessment of glaucoma, the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide and the second leading cause in Europe. Given that patients with reduced CCT are at a significantly higher risk of developing glaucoma, further research is necessary to understand the association between SLE and CCT. Our study aims to enhance methodological rigor compared to prior research by determining an appropriate sample size and exclusively enrolling SLE patients to increase participant homogeneity. Background: Learning to thinking critically about health information and choices can protect people from unnecessary suffering, harm, and resource waste. Earlier work revealed that children can learn these skills, but printing costs and curricula compatibility remain important barriers to school implementation. We aimed to develop a set of digital learning resources for students to think critically about health that were suitable for use in Kenyan, Rwandan, and Ugandan secondary schools., Methods: We conducted work in two phases collaborating with teachers, students, schools, and national curriculum development offices using a human-centred design approach. First, we conducted context analyses and an overview of teaching strategies, prioritised content and collected examples. Next, we developed lessons and guidance iteratively, informed by data from user-testing, individual and group interviews, and school pilots., Results: Final resources include online lesson plans, teachers' guide, and extra resources, with lesson plans in two modes, for use in a classroom equipped with a blackboard/flip-chart and a projector. The resources are accessible offline for use when electricity or Internet is lacking. Teachers preferred the projector mode, as it provided structure and a focal point for class attention. Feedback was largely positive, with teachers and students appreciating the learning and experiencing it as relevant. Four main challenges included time to teach lessons; incorrect comprehension; identifying suitable examples; and technical, logistical, and behavioural challenges with a student-computer mode that we piloted. We resolved challenges by simplifying and combining lessons; increasing opportunities for review and assessment; developing teacher training materials, creating a searchable set of examples; and deactivating the student-computer mode., Conclusion: Using a human-centred design approach, we created digital resources for teaching secondary school students to think critically about health actions and for training teachers. Molecular energy transfer in gas-phase collisions is of large interest in kinetics models. Vibrational excitation and deactivation processes can be concurrent with chemical reaction and/or sources of nascent excited species. In the present work, a full-dimension quasi-classical trajectory study of the vibrational deactivation of OH( v ' = 1,5) in collisions with SO is presented. A global potential energy surface for the ground electronic state of HSO 2 , previously reported, is used to represent the interatomic interactions. The specific initial-state OH deactivation cross section and the corresponding SO activation cross sections are reported. Models for the maximum impact parameter and excitation function are discussed, while some details on the energy transfer mechanisms are also given. Specific initial-state deactivation thermal rate coefficients and vibrational average deactivation thermal rate coefficients are also presented and compared to previous results in the literature.

A deep understanding of energy transfer processes in molecular collisions is at central attention in physical chemistry. Particularly vibrational excitation of small molecules colliding with hot light atoms, via a metastable complex formation, has shown to be an efficient manner of enhancing reactivity. A quasi-classical trajectory study of translation-to-vibration energy transfer (T-V ET) in collisions of hyperthermal H( 2 S) atoms with SO 2 (X̃ 1 A ' ) molecules is presented here. For such a study, a double many-body expansion potential energy surface previously reported for HSO 2 ( 2 A) is used. This work was motivated by recent experiments by Ma et al. studying collisions of H + SO 2 at the translational energy of 59 kcal/mol [J. Ma et al., Phys. Rev. A 93, 040702 (2016)]. Calculations reproduce the experimental evidence that during majority of inelastic non-reactive collision processes, there is a metastable intermediate formation (HOSO or HSO 2 ). Nevertheless, the analysis of the trajectories shows that there are two distinct mechanisms in the T-V ET process: direct and indirect. Direct T-V processes are responsible for the high population of SO 2 with relatively low vibrational excitation energy, while indirect ones dominate the conversion from translational energy to high values of the vibrational counterpart.

Case Report: The case is presented of a patient with diagnosis of iris nevus in the left eye in youth with a poor follow-up, who referred a decreased visual acuity in that eye. A hyphaema and a 3×4×3mm nodule with irregular pigmentation was observed. Excision of the tumour and histological analysis confirmed the suspicion of iris melanoma in stage Ia., Discussion: Despite the low grade malignancy of iris melanoma and the low frequency of transformation of iris nevus into melanoma, a follow-up is required for its early diagnosis and treatment., (Copyright © 2016 Sociedad Española de Oftalmología. Clinical Case: A 43-year-old woman in remission from T- cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia was referred to our hospital with suspected leukaemic retinitis. The funduscopic examination of her left eye revealed multifocal yellow-white peripheral retinitis and retinal haemorrhage. The patient was treated for cytomegalovirus retinitis after an extended haematological investigation showed no abnormalities. Initial improvement was followed by papillitis in the left eye and motility restriction in the right eye. Magnetic resonance and lumbar puncture confirmed leukaemia relapse. Specific treatment was initiated with complete resolution., Discussion: Ocular involvement may precede haematological leukaemia relapse. Clinical Case: Seven-year-old male patient, affected by xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) who was referred to ophthalmology due to the presence of numerous tumours in his left eye that affected the eyelids and conjunctiva. He had a tumour in his lower eyelid that affected the free edge, creating a secondary ectropion, and several lesions with a melanocytic appearance in conjunctiva. A resection of the eyelid tumour and the conjunctival lesions were performed by placing a skin graft and amniotic membrane, respectively, as covering., Discussion: XP patients have high probability of developing eye tumours. This work reports CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pV(T+d)Z ab initio calculations for the lower energy region of the ground electronic state of the HSO2 system. Optimized geometries, total energies, zero-point vibrational energies, frequencies, complete basis set extrapolations, and reaction paths are reported at the same level of calculation. The connection of the two minima (synperiplanar HOSO and HSO2) with the dissociation limit H + SO2 through the van der Waals minimum H···SO2 was established. An important quantitative discrepancy with previous works is the fact that at the present level of calculation the energy difference between transition states connecting the global minimum synperiplanar HOSO to the HSO2 minimum (TS5) and to the van der Waals minimum H···SO2 (TS6) is negligible, implying that the forward barriers after the synperiplanar HOSO global minimum have practically the same height. This result suggests that these two transition states may be involved in the path of the global minimum toward the exit channel H + SO2. As a consequence, trajectories for the OH + SO collisions could evolve through the well formed by the HSO2 minimum, therefore opening two competitive channels for the OH + SO → H + SO2 reaction, a fact never reported in trajectory calculations.

A study of the OH + SO → H + SO2 reaction using a quasi-classical trajectory method is presented with the aim of investigating the role of the ro-vibrational energy of the reactants in the reactivity. The calculations were carried out using a previously reported global potential energy surface for HSO2((2)A). Different initial conditions with one and both reactants ro-vibrationally excited were studied. The reactive cross sections, for each studied combination, are calculated and then fitted to a capture-like model combined with a factor accounting for the recrossing effects. The Vibrational Energy Quantum Mechanical Threshold of the Complex method was used to correct for the zero-point vibrational energy leakage of the classical calculations. State specific and averaged rate constants are reported. The reactivity is affected when ro-vibrational energy of either of the reactants is changed. The present calculations provide a theoretical support for the experimental rate constant for temperatures below 550 K, but fail to account for the significant fall in the observed rate constant upon increasing the temperature above this value.

The importance of the HSO(2) system in atmospheric and combustion chemistry has motivated several works dedicated to the study of associated structures and chemical reactions. Nevertheless, controversy still exists about a possible connection between the upper and lower energy regions of the potential energy surface (PES) for the ground electronic state of the system. Very recently, a path to connect these regions was proposed based on studies at the CASPT2/aug-cc-pV(T+d)Z level of calculation but the small energy difference between some of the transitions states along that path suggested the necessity of calculations at a higher level of theory. In the present work, we report a CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pV(T+d)Z study of the stationary states associated to the proposed connection path, including assessment of the most reliable complete basis set (CBS) extrapolation scheme for the system. Among the new features, the present calculations show that there are no structures corresponding to the HSO(2)(b) minimum and the TS3 saddle point obtained at the CASPT2 level and that the connection path between the upper and lower energy regions of the PES for the ground electronic state involves only one transition state and most probably more than one electronic state.

The importance of the HSO(2) system in atmospheric and combustion chemistry has motivated several works dedicated to the study of associated structures and chemical reactions. Nevertheless controversy still exists in connection with the reaction SH + O(2)→ H + SO(2) and also related to the role of the HSOO isomers in the potential energy surface (PES). Here we report high-level ab initio calculation for the electronic ground state of the HSO(2) system. Energetic, geometric, and frequency properties for the major stationary states of the PES are reported at the same level of calculations: CASPT2/aug-cc-pV(T+d)Z. This study introduces three new stationary points (two saddle points and one minimum). These structures allow the connection of the skewed HSOO(s) and the HSO(2) minima defining new reaction paths for SH + O(2) → H + SO(2) and SH + O(2) → OH + SO. In addition, the location of the HSOO isomers in the reaction pathways have been clarified.

A full dimensional quasiclassical trajectory study of the OH+SO reaction is presented with the aim of investigating the role of the reactants rotational energy in the reactivity. Different energetic combinations with one and both reactants rotationally excited are studied. A passive method is used to correct zero-point-energy leakage in the classical calculations. The reactive cross sections, for each combination, are calculated and fitted to a capturelike model combined with a factor accounting for recrossing effects. Reactivity decreases as rotational energy is increased in any of both reactants. This fact provides a theoretical support for the experimental dependence of the rate constant on temperature.

The aim of this study was to show the US findings in mode B and color Doppler duplex of the dilatation of the rete testis, in order to analyze its association with other scrotal processes and to confirm their inclusion into the benign testicular lesions. We present seven diagnosed cases (mean age 61 years) of dilatation of the rete testis to which a clinical control and US was accomplished up to 1 year. The scrotal sonography study was carried out with a linear probe of 7.5 Mhz. In the US examination we observed in all cases an intratesticular image located in the mediastinum testis constituted by anechoic and serpiginous tubular structures, which do not show any blood flow with the color Doppler. In one case the mentioned observations were bilateral. Five cases had cysts in epididymis and the last case showed an increase in size in the epididymis head. Color Doppler duplex examination did not detected flow dots in the seven patients. The dilatation of the rete testis is a benign entity frequently associated with pathology in epididymis, with specific US findings which permit avoidance of invasive tests.
