3. An historical and geographic data set on the distribution of macroinvertebrates in Italian mountain lakes

Abstract

Macroinvertebrates play a key role in freshwater food webs, acting as major links between organic matter resources, primary consumers (such as bacteria), and secondary consumers (e.g.fish, amphibians, birds, and reptiles). In this paper we present a data set encompassing all geographic and historical data available on macroinvertebrates of the Italian mountain lakes from 1902 to 2016. The data set, divided per Italian mountain range (Alps and Apennines) and administrative region, covers more than a century of studies of many foreign and Italian scientists. The data set includes 2372 records and shows macroinvertebrate occurrence data in 176 Alpine and in 13 Apennine lakes, of which 178 of natural origin, 5 reservoirs, and 6 artificially extended. The data set lists 605 taxa, updated on the basis of their current taxonomic position. Only 353 taxa are identified at species level, highlighting the still poorly investigated biodiversity of Italian mountain lake macroinvertebrates. Since they function as key elements to characterize lake ecological status, our data set emphasizes the huge taxonomic effort that still has to be undertaken to fully characterize these ecosystems. The data set is available in csv (comma-separated values) format.

Abstract

The main aims of the COST Action CA20125 Applications For Zoosporic Parasites In Aquatic Systems, in short ParAqua, are to organize and coordinate an innovative and dynamic Network, connecting academia, industries and water management authorities to advance and apply knowledge and expertise on zoosporic parasites (i.e. aquatic fungi and fungi-like microorganisms) and the relation with their hosts in natural ecosystems and industrial algal biotech production. Among the ParAqua objectives, specific task of WG1 and WG2 is to compile and integrate a database on zoosporic parasites across Europe and inventorise parasite effects on algal hosts in algal biotech and natural systems. The purpose of this Data Management Plan is the description of how data is handled in the ParAqua Action in order to enable the sharing and reutilization of the data gathered during the Action lifetime, promoting an open and FAIR Research Data Management. For sake of clarity and to streamline the process of data mobilisation, we describe the data into four datasets type: i) "occurrences" dataset, which will contain data of presence/absence of parasites; ii) "traits" dataset, for the description of all the morpho-functional traits; iii) "environmental variables" dataset, for the accessories environmental measurements; iiii) "literature data", which comprises mainly the data that are collected in literature to build the paper on occurrences and sequences of alga parasite foreseen in ParAqua WG1 (not currently included in the following version). LifeWatch Italy, the national node of the eScience European Infrastructure for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research LifeWatch ERIC, will collaborate by providing the IT infrastructure, tools, services and skills for sharing the acquired knowledge and assure the long-term sustainability of the data managed within ParAqua. This Data Management Plan is intended as a live document, and will be regularly updated whenever needed. This publication is based upon work from COST Action 20125 - Applications for zoosporic parasites in aquatic systems (ParAqua), supported by COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology). 15. First isolation of the causative agent of white-nose disease Pseudogymnoascus destructans in Italy

Abstract

White-nose disease, caused by the dermatophyte Pseudogymnoascus destructans, is a devastating pathology that has caused a massive decline in the US bat populations. In Europe, this fungus and the related infection in bats have been recorded in several countries and for many bat species, although no mass mortality has been detected. This study reports for the first time the presence of P. destructans in Italy. The fungus was isolated in the Rio Martino cave, a site located in the Western Alps and included in the Natura 2000 network. Twenty bats, belonging to five different species, were analysed. The fungus was retrieved on eight individuals of Myotis emarginatus. The allied keratolytic species P. pannorum was observed on two other individuals, also belonging to M. emarginatus. Strains were isolated in pure culture and characterized morphologically. Results were validated through molecular analyses. Future work should be dedicated to understand the distribution and the effects of the two Pseudogymnoascus species on Italian bats.

Abstract

This study is the first to investigate and characterize the mycobiota associated with the alien species Asparagopsis taxiformis, a rhodophyte classified as one of the '100 worst invasive species' in the Mediterranean Sea by the Hellenic Center for Marine Research, as it threatens biodiversity. Fungal endophyte and epiphyte communities were investigated on algal specimens from two sampling sites on the island of Linosa (Marine Protected Area Isole Pelagie, Italy). 87% of the 24 specimens that were analysed for epiphytes displayed a microfungal colonization. No endophytes were found. Only a small amount of microfungi was found to be associated with this alga. Only five fungal taxa were isolated; two of which are sporadically associated with the alga, while three, Eurotium rubrum, Cladosporium cladosporioides and Cladosporium pseudocladosporioides, seem to be related to A. taxiformis.
