Search

Many processes have been proposed to explain the quenching of star formation in spiral galaxies and their transformation into S0s. These processes affect the bulge and disc in different ways, and so by isolating the bulge and disc spectra, we can look for these characteristic signatures. In this work, we used BUDDI to cleanly extract the spectra of the bulges and discs of 78 S0 galaxies in the MaNGA Survey. We compared the luminosity and mass weighted stellar populations of the bulges and discs, finding that bulges are generally older and more metal rich than their discs. When considering the mass and environment of each galaxy, we found that the galaxy stellar mass plays a more significant role on the formation of the bulges. Bulges in galaxies with masses $\geq10^{10}M_\odot$ built up the majority of their mass rapidly early in their lifetimes, while those in lower mass galaxies formed over more extended timescales and more recently. No clear difference was found in the formation or quenching processes of the discs as a function of galaxy environment. We conclude that more massive S0 galaxies formed through an inside-out scenario, where the bulge formed first and evolved passively while the disc underwent a more extended period of star formation. In lower mass S0s, the bulges and discs either formed together from the same material, or through an outside-in scenario. All satellite galaxies experience environmental secular evolution as they are accreted onto their host systems. Observations and simulations indicate that the closer they are to their hosts, the higher their dark matter densities are. Using the NGFS deep photometric observations of 630 satellites in the Fornax galaxy cluster we discover that their mean stellar densities also show such anti-correlation with their distances to the cluster center, correlating with the host tidal density field, up to a transition radius at ℜ★ ≈ 0.4𝑹vir (400 kpc), beyond which the stellar densities increase again. Comparisons with satellites of a Fornax-type cluster in the TNG50 simulation reveal a similar break at ℜ★ ≈ 0.5𝑹vir in deprojection, while their mean dark matter densities keep decreasing with distance to their host. Moreover, the relative fraction of gas-rich satellites and gaseous densities decrease significantly within ℜ★. We expand our analysis to satellites in different environments probing the more massive Virgo cluster, and also the less massive Milky Way and Andromeda systems, finding a similar behavior and transition radius in units of 𝑹vir for each system of satellites, with ℜ★ ∼ 0.4 − 0.6𝑹vir. This transition radius, if universal, could provide a useful observational diagnostic tool to identify the regions where the cluster environment would have processed the baryonic component of the accreted satellites more strongly, and where the more pristine population would be located. Finally, we suggest the utility of calibrating ℜ★ as a possible photometric virial mass estimator.

Rare giant low surface brightness galaxies (gLSBGs) act as a stress test for the current galaxy formation paradigm. To answer the question `How rare are they?' we estimate their volume density in the local Universe. A visual inspection of 120~sq.~deg. covered by deep Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam data was performed independently by four team members. We detected 42 giant disky systems (30 of them isolated) at $z\leq0.1$ with either $g$-band 27.7~mag~arcsec$^{-2}$ isophotal radius or four disc scalelengths $4h \geq 50$~kpc, 37 of which (including 25 isolated) had low central surface brightness ($μ_{0,g}\ge 22.7$ mag~arcsec$^{-2}$). This corresponds to volume densities of 4.70$\times 10^{-5}$ Mpc$^{-3}$ for all galaxies with giant extended discs and 4.04$\times 10^{-5}$ Mpc$^{-3}$ for gLSBGs, which converts to $\sim $12,700 such galaxies in the entire sky out to $z, 5 pages, 2 tables, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

Protoclusters, the progenitors of the most massive structures in the Universe, have been identified at redshifts of up to 6.6. Besides exploring early structure formation, searching for protoclusters at even higher redshifts is particularly useful to probe the reionization. Here we report the discovery of the protocluster LAGER-z7OD1 at a redshift of 6.93, when the Universe was only 770 million years old and could be experiencing rapid evolution of the neutral hydrogen fraction in the intergalactic medium. The protocluster is identified by an overdensity of 6 times the average galaxy density, and with 21 narrowband selected Lyman-$\alpha$ galaxies, among which 16 have been spectroscopically confirmed. At redshifts similar to or above this record, smaller protogroups with fewer members have been reported. LAGER-z7OD1 shows an elongated shape and consists of two subprotoclusters, which would have merged into one massive cluster with a present-day mass of $3.7 \times 10^{15}$ solar masses. The total volume of the ionized bubbles generated by its member galaxies is found to be comparable to the volume of the protocluster itself, indicating that we are witnessing the merging of the individual bubbles and that the intergalactic medium within the protocluster is almost fully ionized. We report on results from GBT/ARGUS $^{12}$CO(1-0) observations for the giant low surface brightness galaxy Malin 1, which allow us to determine an upper limit for its CO mass, and hence its molecular gas mass and molecular gas mass surface density $\Sigma_{H_2}$. Although we performed very deep observations through 17 hours on source integration time, reaching a noise level of $\sim 0.2$ mK (T$^{*}_{A}$) with a corresponding extended source CO limit (3$\sigma$) of 0.09 K km s$^{-1}$, 19 times more sensitive than previous works, we do not detect the $^{12}$CO(1-0) emission line. However, the observations allow us to estimate an upper limit (3$\sigma$) for the CO mass of about $7.4 \times 10^9$ M$_\odot$ for the extended emission, and $1.4 \times 10^8$ M$_\odot$ for the central part of the galaxy. With these figures we conclude that the molecular gas surface density is lower than 0.3 M$_\odot$ pc$^{-2}$, and the corresponding molecular to atomic gas mass ratio is lower than 0.13. The evidence suggests a quite different physical conditions for the interstellar medium in Malin 1 compared to that of normal, high surface brightness spirals. Using observed data from the literature, we compare in one single publication the angular momentum (AM) of low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs), with that of high surface brightness galaxies (HSBGs), a comparison that either is currently spread across many unconnected references, or simply does not exist. Partly because of the subject, this has received little attention outside the realm of simulations. We use previous results of the stellar specific AM $j_{*}$ from the SPARC database containing Spitzer 3.6 $\mu$m photometry and accurate H I rotation curves from Lelli et al. using a sample of 38 LSBGs and 82 HSBGs. We do this with the objective of comparing both galaxy populations, finding that LSBGs are higher in the Fall relation by about 0.174 dex. Additionally, we apply and test different masses and formation models to estimate the spin parameter $\lambda$, which quantifies the rotation obtained from the tidal torque theory, finding no clear evidence of a difference in the spin of LSBGs and HSBGs under a classic disk formation model that assumes the ratio ($f_{j}$) between $j_{*}$ and the specific AM of the halo is $\sim 1$. In another respect, by using the biased collapse model, where $f_{j}$ depends on the star formation efficiency, it was found that LSBGs clearly show higher spin values, having an average spin of $\sim 2$ times the average spin of HSBGs. We present a new measurement of the Lyα luminosity function (LF) at redshift z = 6.9, finding moderate evolution from z = 5.7 that is consistent with a fully or largely ionized z ∼ 7 intergalactic medium. Our result is based on four fields of the LAGER (Lyman Alpha Galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization) project. Our survey volume of 6.1 × 106 Mpc3 is double that of the next largest z ∼ 7 survey. We combine two new LAGER fields (WIDE12 and GAMA15A) with two previously reported LAGER fields (COSMOS and CDFS). In the new fields, we identify N = 95 new z = 6.9 Lyα emitter (LAEs) candidates, characterize our survey’s completeness and reliability, and compute Lyα LFs. The best-fit Schechter LF parameters for all four LAGER fields are in good general agreement. Two fields (COSMOS and WIDE12) show evidence for a bright-end excess above the Schechter function fit. We find that the Lyα luminosity density declines at the same rate as the UV continuum LF from z = 5.7 to 6.9. This is consistent with an intergalactic medium that was fully ionized as early as redshift z ∼ 7 or with a volume-averaged neutral hydrogen fraction of x H I < 0.33 at 1σ.

We investigate the on-average properties for 28 star-forming ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) located in low-density environments, by stacking their spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. These relatively-isolated UDGs, with stellar masses of $\log_{10}(M_*/M_{\odot})\sim 8.57\pm0.29$, have the on-average total-stellar-metallicity [M/H]$\sim -0.82\pm0.14$, iron-metallicity [Fe/H]$\sim -1.00\pm0.16$, stellar age $t_*\sim5.2\pm0.5$ Gyr, $\alpha$-enhancement [$\alpha$/Fe]$\sim 0.24\pm0.10$, and oxygen abundance 12+log(O/H)$\sim 8.16\pm0.06$, as well as central stellar velocity dispersion $54\pm12$ km/s. On the star-formation rate versus stellar mass diagram, these UDGs are located lower than the extrapolated star-forming main sequence from the massive spirals, but roughly follow the main sequence of low-surface-brightness dwarf galaxies. We find that these star-forming UDGs are not particularly metal-poor or metal-rich for their stellar masses, as compared with the metallicity-mass relations of the nearby typical dwarfs. With the UDG data of this work and previous studies, we also find a coarse correlation between [Fe/H] and magnesium-element enhancement [Mg/Fe] for UDGs: [Mg/Fe]$\simeq-0.43(\pm0.26)$[Fe/H]$-0.14(\pm0.40)$., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

Clues to the formation and evolution of Nuclear Star Clusters (NSCs) lie in their stellar populations. However, these structures are often very faint compared to their host galaxy, and spectroscopic analysis of NSCs is hampered by contamination of light from the rest of the system. With the introduction of wide-field IFU spectrographs, new techniques have been developed to model the light from different components within galaxies, making it possible to cleanly extract the spectra of the NSCs and study their properties with minimal contamination from the light of the rest of the galaxy. This work presents the analysis of the NSCs in a sample of 12 dwarf galaxies in the Fornax Cluster observed with MUSE. Analysis of the stellar populations and star-formation histories reveal that all the NSCs show evidence of multiple episodes of star formation, indicating that they have built up their mass further since their initial formation. The NSCs were found to have systematically lower metallicities than their host galaxies, which is consistent with a scenario for mass-assembly through mergers with infalling globular clusters, while the presence of younger stellar populations and gas emission in the core of two galaxies is indicative of in-situ star formation. We conclude that the NSCs in these dwarf galaxies likely originated as globular clusters that migrated to the core of the galaxy which have built up their mass mainly through mergers with other infalling clusters, with gas-inflow leading to in-situ star formation playing a secondary role., 18 pages, 13 figures. We present the design for the first narrowband filter NB964 for the Dark Energy Camera (DECam), which is operated on the 4m Blanco Telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. The NB964 filter profile is essentially defined by maximizing the power of searching for Lyman alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) in the epoch of reionization, with the consideration of the night sky background in the near-infrared and the DECam quantum efficiency. The NB964 filter was manufactured by Materion in 2015. It has a central wavelength of 964.2 nm and a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 9.2 nm. An NB964 survey named LAGER (Lyman Alpha Galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization) has been ongoing since December 2015. Here we report results of lab tests, on-site tests and observations with the NB964 filter. We investigate the formation and properties of low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) with $M_{*} > 10^{9.5} \mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ in the EAGLE hydrodynamical cosmological simulation. Galaxy surface brightness depends on a combination of stellar mass surface density and mass-to-light ratio ($M/L$), such that low surface brightness is strongly correlated with both galaxy angular momentum (low surface density) and low specific star formation rate (high $M/L$). This drives most of the other observed correlations between surface brightness and galaxy properties, such as the fact that most LSBGs have low metallicity. We find that LSBGs are more isolated than high surface brightness galaxies (HSBGs), in agreement with observations, but that this trend is driven entirely by the fact that LSBGs are unlikely to be close-in satellites. The majority of LSBGs are consistent with a formation scenario in which the galaxies with the highest angular momentum are those that formed most of their stars recently from a gas reservoir co-rotating with a high-spin dark matter halo. However, the most extended LSBG disks in EAGLE, which are comparable in size to observed giant LSBGs, are built up via mergers. With the published data of apparent axis ratios for 1109 ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) located in 17 low-redshift (z~ 0.020 - 0.063) galaxy clusters and 84 UDGs in 2 intermediate-redshift (z~ 0.308 - 0.348) clusters, we take advantage of a Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach and assume a ubiquitous triaxial model to investigate the intrinsic morphologies of UDGs. Using the photometric data from the Next Generation Fornax Survey, we find a significant radial alignment signal among the Fornax dwarf galaxies. For the first time, we report that the radial alignment signal of nucleated dwarfs is stronger than that of non-nucleated ones at 2.4$\sigma$ confidence level, and the dwarfs located in the outer region ($R>R_{\rm{vir}}/3$; $R_{\rm{vir}}$ is the Fornax virial radius) show slightly stronger radial alignment signal than those in the inner region ($R, Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 1 table; accepted by ApJ

We present a photometric study of the dwarf galaxy population in the core region ($< r_{\rm vir}/4$) of the Fornax galaxy cluster based on deep $u'g'i'$ photometry from the Next Generation Fornax Cluster Survey. All imaging data were obtained with the Dark Energy Camera mounted on the 4-meter Blanco telescope at the Cerro-Tololo Interamerican Observatory. We identify 258 dwarf galaxy candidates with luminosities $-17 < M_{g'} < -8$ mag, corresponding to typical stellar masses of $9.5\gtrsim \log{\cal M}_{\star}/M_\odot \gtrsim 5.5$, reaching $\sim\!3$ mag deeper in point-source luminosity and $\sim\!4$ mag deeper in surface-brightness sensitivity compared to the classic Fornax Cluster Catalog. Morphological analysis shows that surface-brightness profiles are well represented by single-component S��rsic models with average S��rsic indices of $\langle n\rangle_{u',g',i'}=(0.78-0.83) \pm 0.02$, and average effective radii of $\langle r_e\rangle_{u',g',i'}\!=(0.67-0.70) \pm 0.02$ kpc. Color-magnitude relations indicate a flattening of the galaxy red sequence at faint galaxy luminosities, similar to the one recently discovered in the Virgo cluster. A comparison with population synthesis models and the galaxy mass-metallicity relation reveals that the average faint dwarf galaxy is likely older than ~5 Gyr. We study galaxy scaling relations between stellar mass, effective radius, and stellar mass surface density over a stellar mass range covering six orders of magnitude. We find that over the sampled stellar mass range several distinct mechanisms of galaxy mass assembly can be identified: i) dwarf galaxies assemble mass inside the half-mass radius up to $\log{\cal M}_{\star}$ ~8.0, ii) isometric mass assembly in the range $8.0 < \log{\cal M}_{\star}/M_\odot < 10.5$, and iii) massive galaxies assemble stellar mass predominantly in their halos at $\log{\cal M}_{\star}$ ~10.5 and above., 19 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will enable revolutionary studies of galaxies, dark matter, and black holes over cosmic time. The LSST Galaxies Science Collaboration has identified a host of preparatory research tasks required to leverage fully the LSST dataset for extragalactic science beyond the study of dark energy. This Galaxies Science Roadmap provides a brief introduction to critical extragalactic science to be conducted ahead of LSST operations, and a detailed list of preparatory science tasks including the motivation, activities, and deliverables associated with each. Narrowband imaging is a highly successful approach for finding large numbers of high redshift Lya emitting galaxies (LAEs) up to z~6.6. However, at z>~7 there are as yet only 3 narrowband selected LAEs with spectroscopic confirmations (two at z~6.9-7.0, one at z~7.3), which hinders extensive studies on cosmic reionization and galaxy evolution at this key epoch. We have selected 23 candidate z~6.9 LAEs in COSMOS field with the large area narrowband survey LAGER (Lyman-Alpha Galaxies at the End of Reionization). In this work we present spectroscopic followup observations of 12 candidates using IMACS on Magellan. For 9 of these, the observations are sufficiently deep to detect the expected lines. Lya emission lines are identified in six sources (yielding a success rate of 2/3), including 3 luminous LAEs with Lya luminosities of L(Lya) ~ 10^{43.5} erg/s, the highest among known spectroscopically confirmed galaxies at >~7.0. This triples the sample size of spectroscopically confirmed narrowband selected LAEs at z>~7, and confirms the bright end bump in the Lya luminosity function we previously derived based on the photometric sample, supporting a patchy reionization scenario. Two luminous LAEs appear physically linked with projected distance of 1.1 pMpc and velocity difference of ~ 170 km/s. They likely sit in a common ionized bubble produced by themselves or with close neighbors, which reduces the IGM attenuation of Lya. A tentative narrow NV$��$1240 line is seen in one source, hinting at activity of a central massive black hole with metal rich line emitting gas., 6 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, accepted by ApJL

We present the nature of 50 hard X-ray emitting objects unveiled through an optical spectroscopy campaign performed at seven telescopes in the northern and southern hemispheres. These objects were detected with the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) instrument onboard the Swift satellite and listed as of unidentified nature in the 54-month Palermo BAT catalogue. In detail, 45 sources in our sample are identified as active galactic nuclei of which, 27 are classified as type 1 (with broad and narrow emission lines) and 18 are classified as type 2 (with only narrow emission lines). Among the broad-line emission objects, one is a type 1 high-redshift quasi-stellar object, and among the narrow-line emission objects, one is a starburst galaxy, one is a X-ray bright optically normal galaxy, and one is a low ionization nuclear emission line region. We report 30 new redshift measurements, 13 confirmations and 2 more accurate redshift values. The remaining five objects are galactic sources: three are Cataclismic Variables, one is a X-ray Binary probably with a low mass secondary star, and one is an active star. We present the largest-ever sample of 79 Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) at $z\sim$ 7.0 selected in the COSMOS and CDFS fields of the LAGER project (the Lyman Alpha Galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization). Our newly amassed ultradeep narrowband exposure and deeper/wider broadband images have more than doubled the number of LAEs in COSMOS, and we have selected 30 LAEs in the second field CDFS. We detect two large-scale LAE-overdense regions in the COSMOS that are likely protoclusters at the highest redshift to date. We perform injection and recovery simulations to derive the sample incompleteness. We show significant incompleteness comes from blending with foreground sources, which however has not been corrected in LAE luminosity functions in {the} literature. The bright end bump in the Ly$\alpha$ luminosity function in COSMOS is confirmed with 6 (2 newly selected) luminous LAEs (L$_{Ly\alpha}$ $>$ 10$^{43.3}$ erg s$^{-1}$). Interestingly, the bump is absent in CDFS, in which only one luminous LAE is detected. Meanwhile, the faint end luminosity functions from the two fields well agree with each other. The 6 luminous LAEs in COSMOS coincide with 2 LAE-overdense regions, while such regions are not seen in CDFS. The bright-end luminosity function bump could be attributed to ionized bubbles in a patchy reionization. It appears associated with cosmic overdensities, thus supports an inside-out reionization topology at $z$ $\sim$ 7.0, i.e., the high density peaks were ionized earlier compared to the voids. An average neutral hydrogen fraction of $x_{HI}$ $\sim$ 0.2 -- 0.4 is derived at $z\sim$ 7.0 based on the cosmic evolution of the Ly$\alpha$ luminosity function., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a compilation of UBVRIz light curves of 51 type II supernovae discovered during the course of four different surveys during 1986-2003: the Cerro Tololo Supernova Survey, the Calán/Tololo Supernova Program (C&T), the Supernova Optical and Infrared Survey (SOIRS), and the Carnegie Type II Supernova Survey (CATS). The photometry is based on template-subtracted images to eliminate any potential host galaxy light contamination, and calibrated from foreground stars. This work presents these photometric data, studies the color evolution using different bands, and explores the relation between the magnitude at maximum brightness and the brightness decline parameter (s) from maximum light through the end of the recombination phase. This parameter is found to be shallower for redder bands and appears to have the best correlation in the B band. We study the relative fraction of low and high surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs and HSBGs) at void walls in the SDSS DR7. We focus on galaxies in equal local density environments. We assume that the host dark-matter halo mass (for which we use SDSS group masses) is a good indicator of local density. This analysis allows to examine the behavior of the abundance of LSBG and HSBG galaxies at a fixed local density and distinguish the large-scale environment defined by the void geometry. We compare galaxies in the field, and in the void walls; the latter are defined as the volume of void shells of radius equal to that of the void. We find a significant decrement, a factor $\sim 4$, of the relative fraction of blue, active star-forming LSBGs in equal mass groups at the void walls and the field. This decrement is consistent with an increase of the fraction of blue, active star-forming HSBGs. By contrast, red LSBGs and HSBGs show negligible changes. We argue that these results are consistent with a scenario where LSBGs with blue colors and strong star formation activity at the void walls are fueled by gas from the expanding void regions. This process could lead to LSBG to HSBG transformations.

We present basic data on the stellar populations of the interacting galaxies PGC0029664 and PGC1188757, and their debris. Comparing B, V, R, and I deep photometry and colors obtained with the Magellan telescope with models of galaxy evolution, we estimate ages and metallicities of the stellar populations in both galaxies, as well as in those resolved regions resulting apparently from the interaction itself, namely, a bridge of material between both galaxies and the many small features observed in the spiral arms. Results suggest that blue and bright spots observed in the bridge are composed of recently formed stars, since they have similar blue colors to those observed in three regions embedded in the spiral arms of PGC0029664, very likely regions of recent star formation.

Since its launch on October 2002, the INTEGRAL satellite has revolutionized our knowledge of the hard X-ray sky thanks to its unprecedented imaging capabilities and source detection positional accuracy above 20 keV. Nevertheless, many of the newly-detected sources in the INTEGRAL sky surveys are of unknown nature. However, the combined use of available information at longer wavelengths (mainly soft X-rays and radio) and of optical spectroscopy on the putative counterparts of these new hard X-ray objects allows pinpointing their exact nature. Continuing our long-standing program running since 2004 (and with which we identified more than 100 INTEGRAL objects) here we report the classification, through optical spectroscopy, of 25 unidentified high-energy sources mostly belonging to the recently published 4th IBIS survey., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, 1 table; accepted for publication in the Proceedings of HEPRO-II Conference (International Journal of Modern Physics D, in press; eds. We present a multi-wavelength analysis of 48 submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) detected in the LABOCA/ACT Survey of Clusters at All Redshifts, LASCAR, which acquired new 870 $\mu$m and ATCA 2.1 GHz observations of ten galaxy clusters detected through their Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) signal by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope. Far-infrared observations were also conducted with the PACS (100/160 $\mu$m) and SPIRE (250/350/500 $\mu$m) instruments on $Herschel$ for sample subsets of five and six clusters. LASCAR 870 $\mu$m, maps were reduced using a multi-scale iterative pipeline that removes the SZE increment signal, yielding point-source sensitivities of $\sigma\sim2\rm{\,mJy\,beam}^{-1}$. We detect in total 49 sources at the $4\sigma$ level, and conduct a detailed multi-wavelength analysis considering our new radio and far-IR observations plus existing near-IR and optical data. One source is identified as a foreground galaxy, 28 SMGs are matched to single radio sources, 4 have double radio counterparts, and 16 are undetected at 2.1 GHz but tentatively associated in some cases to near-IR/optical sources. We estimate photometric redshifts for 34 sources with secure (25) and tentative (9) matches at different wavelengths, obtaining a median $z=2.8^{+2.1}_{-1.7}$. Compared to previous results for single-dish surveys, our redshift distribution has a comparatively larger fraction of sources at $z>3$ and the high-redshift tail is more extended. This is consistent with millimeter spectroscopic confirmation of a growing number of high-$z$ SMGs and relevant for testing of cosmological models. Analytical lens modeling is applied to estimate magnification factors for 42 SMGs at cluster-centric radii $>1.2$'; with the demagnified flux densities and source-plane areas, we obtain integral number counts that agree with previous submillimeter surveys., Comment: 44 pages, 18 figures

Following the presentation of the XMM-LSS X-ray source detection package by Pacaud et al., we provide the source lists for the first 5.5 surveyed square degrees. The catalogues pertain to the [0.5-2] and [2-10] keV bands and contain in total 3385 point-like or extended sources above a detection likelihood of 15 in either band. The agreement with deep logN-logS is excellent. The main parameters considered are position, countrate, source extent with associated likelihood values. A set of additional quantities such as astrometric corrections and fluxes are further calculated while errors on the position and countrate are deduced from simulations. We describe the construction of the band-merged catalogue allowing rapid sub-sample selection and easy cross-correlation with external multi-wavelength catalogues. A small optical CFHTLS multi-band subset of objects is associated wich each source along with an X-ray/optical overlay. We make the full X-ray images available in FITS format. The data are available at CDS and, in a more extended form, at the Milan XMM-LSS database.

We present a sample of 29 galaxy clusters from the XMM-LSS survey over an area of some 5 deg2 out to a redshift of z= 1.05. The sample clusters, which represent about half of the X-ray clusters identified in the region, follow well-defined X-ray selection criteria and are all spectroscopically confirmed. For all clusters, we provide X-ray luminosities and temperatures as well as masses, obtained from dedicated spatial and spectral fitting. The cluster distribution peaks around z= 0.3 and T= 1.5 keV, half of the objects being groups with a temperature below 2 keV. Our LX–T(z) relation points towards self-similar evolution, but does not exclude other physically plausible models. Assuming that cluster scaling laws follow self-similar evolution, our number density estimates up to z= 1 are compatible with the predictions of the concordance cosmology and with the findings of previous ROSAT surveys. Our well-monitored selection function allowed us to demonstrate that the inclusion of selection effects is essential for the correct determination of the evolution of the LX–T relation, which may explain the contradictory results from previous studies. Extensive simulations show that extending the survey area to 10 deg2 has the potential to exclude the non-evolution hypothesis, but those constraints on more refined intracluster medium models will probably be limited by the large intrinsic dispersion of the LX–T relation, whatever be the sample size. We further demonstrate that increasing the dispersion in the scaling laws increases the number of detectable clusters, hence generating further degeneracy [in addition to σ8, Ωm, LX–T(z)] in the cosmological interpretation of the cluster number counts. We provide useful empirical formulae for the cluster mass–flux and mass–count rate relations as well as a comparison between the XMM-LSS mass sensitivity and that of forthcoming Sunyaev–Zel'dovich surveys.

We present the XMM-LSS cluster catalogue corresponding to the CFHTLS D1 area. The list contains 13 spectroscopically confirmed, X-ray selected galaxy clusters over 0.8 deg2 to a redshift of unity and so constitutes the highest density sample of clusters to date. Cluster X-ray bolometric luminosities range from 0.03 to 5x10^{44} erg/s. In this study, we describe our catalogue construction procedure: from the detection of X-ray cluster candidates to the compilation of a spectroscopically confirmed cluster sample with an explicit selection function. The procedure further provides basic X-ray products such as cluster temperature, flux and luminosity. We detected slightly more clusters with a (0.5-2.0 keV) X-ray fluxes of >2x10^{-14} erg/s/cm^{-2} than we expected based on expectations from deep ROSAT surveys. We also present the Luminosity-Temperature relation for our 9 brightest objects possessing a reliable temperature determination. The slope is in good agreement with the local relation, yet compatible with a luminosity enhancement for the 0.15 < z< 0.35 objects having 1 < T < 2 keV, a population that the XMM-LSS is identifying systematically for the first time. The present study permits the compilation of cluster samples from XMM images whose selection biases are understood. This allows, in addition to studies of large-scale structure, the systematic investigation of cluster scaling law evolution, especially for low mass X-ray groups which constitute the bulk of our observed cluster population. All cluster ancillary data (images, profiles, spectra) are made available in electronic form via the XMM-LSS cluster database.

Optical spectroscopic identification of the nature of 21 unidentified southern hard X-ray objects is reported here in the framework of our campaign aimed at determining the nature of newly-discovered and/or unidentified sources detected by INTEGRAL. Our results show that 5 of these objects are magnetic Cataclysmic Variables (CVs), 4 are High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs; one of which is in the Large Magellanic Cloud) and 12 are Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). When feasible, the main physical parameters for these hard X-ray sources are also computed using the multiwavelength information available in the literature. These identifications further underscore the importance of INTEGRAL in the study of the hard X-ray spectrum of AGNs, HMXBs and CVs, and the usefulness of a strategy of catalogues cross-correlation plus optical spectroscopy to securely pinpoint the actual nature of the X-ray sources detected with INTEGRAL., 14 pages, 7 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication on A&A, main journal. It is an observational fact that bulges of spiral galaxies contain a high fraction of old and metal-rich stars. Following this observational fact, we have investigated colors of 21 bulges hosted by a selected sample of high surface brightness spirals and low surface brightness galaxies observed in B and R optical bands and in J and Ks near-IR bands. Using structural parameters derived from these observations we obtain evidence that bulges could be formed by pure disk evolution (secular evolution), in agreement with the suggestion by some authors. The color profiles, especially the near-IR ones show null or almost null color gradients, supporting the hypothesis that the disk stellar populations are similar to those present in the bulge, and/or some bulges can be understood as disks with enhanced stellar density (or pseudobulges). In the optical, half of the galaxies present an inverse color gradient, giving additional evidence in favor of secular evolution for the sample investigated. The comparison of the observed colors with those obtained from spectrophotometric models of galaxy evolution suggests that bulges of the selected sample have solar and subsolar metallicity, and are independent of the current stellar formation rate. Also, we obtain evidence suggesting that galaxies hosting small bulges tend to be systematically metal poor compared to those with larger bulges. The present paper focuses on the much debated Butcher-Oemler effect: the increase with redshift of the fraction of blue galaxies in clusters. Considering a representative cluster sample made of seven group/clusters at z~0.35, we have measured the blue fraction from the cluster core to the cluster outskirts and the field mainly using wide field CTIO images. This sample represents a random selection of a volume complete x-ray selected cluster sample, selected so that there is no physical connection with the studied quantity (blue fraction), to minimize observational biases. In order to statistically assess the significance of the Butcher-Oemler effect, we introduce the tools of Bayesian inference. Furthermore, we modified the blue fraction definition in order to take into account the reduced age of the universe at higher redshifts, because we should no longer attempt to reject an unphysical universe in which the age of the Universe does depend on redshift, whereas the age of its content does not. We measured the blue fraction from the cluster center to the field and we find that the cluster affects the properties of the galaxies up to two virial radii at z~0.35. Data suggest that during the last 3 Gyrs no evolution of the blue fraction, from the cluster core to the field value, is seen beyond the one needed to account for the varying age with redshift of the Universe and of its content. The agreement of the radial profiles of the blue fraction at z=0 and z~0.35 implies that the pattern infall did not change over the last 3 Gyr, or, at least, its variation has no observational effect on the studied quantity., MNRAS, in press

We present X-ray and optical spectroscopic observations of 12 galaxy groups and clusters identified within the X-ray Multi-Mirror (XMM) Large-Scale Structure (LSS) survey. Groups and clusters are selected as extended X-ray sources from a 3.5 deg 2 XMM image mosaic above a flux limit 8 × 10 −15 erg s −1 cm −2 in the [0.5‐2] keV energy band. Deep BVRI images and multi-object spectroscopy confirm each source as a galaxy concentration located within the redshift interval 0.29 < z < 0.56. We combine line-of-sight velocity dispersions with the X-ray properties of each structure computed from a two-dimensional surface brightness model and a single temperature fit to the XMM spectral data. The resulting distribution of X-ray luminosity, temperature and velocity dispersion indicate that the XMM‐LSS survey is detecting low-mass clusters and galaxy groups to redshifts z < 0.6. Confirmed systems display little or no evidence for X-ray luminosity evolution at a given X-ray temperature compared to lower-redshift X-ray group and cluster samples. A more complete understanding of these trends will be possible with the compilation of a statistically complete sample of galaxy groups and clusters anticipated within the continuing XMM‐LSS survey. We investigate the physical nature of blue cores in early-type galaxies through the first multi-wavelength analysis of a serendipitously discovered field blue-nucleated spheroid in the background of the deep ACS/WFC griz multicolor observations of the cluster Abell 1689. The resolved g-r, r-i and i-z color maps reveal a prominent blue core identifying this galaxy as a ``typical'' case study, exhibiting variations of 0.5-1.0 mag in color between the center and the outer regions, opposite to the expectations of reddened metallicity induced gradients in passively evolved ellipticals. From a Magellan-Clay spectrum we secure the galaxy redshift at $z=0.624$. We find a strong X-ray source coincident with the spheroid galaxy. Spectral features and a high X-ray luminosity indicate the presence of an AGN in the galaxy. However, a comparison of the X-ray luminosity to a sample derived from the Chandra Deep Field South displays Lx to be comparable to Type I/QSO galaxies while the optical flux is consistent with a normal star-forming galaxy. We conclude that the galaxy's non-thermal component dominates at high-energy wavelengths while we associate the spheroid blue light with the stellar spectrum of normal star-forming galaxies. We argue about a probable association between the presence of blue cores in spheroids and AGN activity.

We present UBVRIz light curves of the Type Ia SN 1999ee and the Type Ib/c SN 1999ex, both located in the galaxy IC 5179. SN 1999ee has an extremely well-sampled light curve spanning from 10 days before Bmax through 53 days after peak. Near maximum, we find systematic differences of ~0.05 mag in photometry measured with two different telescopes, even though the photometry is reduced to the same local standards around the supernova using the specific color terms for each instrumental system. We use models for our bandpasses and spectrophotometry of SN 1999ee to derive magnitude corrections (S-corrections) and remedy this problem. This exercise demonstrates the need of accurately characterizing the instrumental system before great photometric accuracies of Type Ia supernovae can be claimed. It also shows that this effect can have important astrophysical consequences, since a small systematic shift of 0.02 mag in the B-V color can introduce a 0.08 mag error in the extinction-corrected peak B magnitude of a supernova and thus lead to biased cosmological parameters. The data for the Type Ib/c SN 1999ex present us with the first ever observed shock breakout of a supernova of this class. These observations show that shock breakout occurred 18 days before Bmax and support the idea that Type Ib/c supernovae are due to the core collapse of massive stars rather than thermonuclear disruption of white dwarfs.

(Abridged) We present results for J and Ks near-IR imaging data on a large sample of 88 galaxies drawn from the catalogue of Impey et al. (1996). The near-IR data unveils many features of LSBGs not seen before in the optical. First, a high fraction of the observed LSBGs are very luminous in the near-IR, indicating that they have a well developed old stellar population, and that older LSBGs are more frequent in the universe than data from optical bands suggested. Second, the near-IR morphologies are often quite different than seen in the optical. Third, we find significant trends between the near-IR morphologies of the galaxies and their ratio of HI mass to near-IR luminosity. Fourth, we find no trend in disk surface brightness with absolute magnitude, but significant correlations when the bulge surface brightness is used. Finally, we find that the formation of a bulge requires a galaxy to have a total baryonic mass above ~ 10**10 Msun. A wide variety of other correlations are explored for the sample. The strongest of our correlations are with the ratio of HI mass to total baryonic mass, MHI/Mbaryonic, which tracks the evolutionary state of the galaxies as they convert gas into stars, and which ranges from 0.05 up to nearly 1 for the galaxies in our sample. We see also trends between MHI/Mbaryonic and central surface density, suggesting that increased star formation efficiency with increasing gas surface density strongly drives the conversion of gas into stars., Accepted in the Astronomical Journal. 48 pages, 20 Figures

We present the first results from the ongoing LAGER project (Lyman Alpha Galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization), which is the largest narrowband survey for $z \sim$ 7 galaxies to date. Using a specially built narrowband filter NB964 for the superb large-area Dark-Energy Camera (DECam) on the NOAO/CTIO 4m Blanco telescope, LAGER has collected 34 hours NB964 narrowband imaging data in the 3 deg$^2$ COSMOS field. We have identified 23 Lyman Alpha Emitter (LAE) candidates at $z$ = 6.9 in the central 2-deg$^2$ region, where DECam and public COSMOS multi-band images exist. The resulting luminosity function can be described as a Schechter function modified by a significant excess at the bright end (4 galaxies with $L_{Ly\alpha} \sim $ 10$^{43.4\pm0.2}$ erg s$^{-1}$). The number density at $L_{Ly\alpha}\sim$ 10$^{43.4\pm0.2}$ erg s$^{-1}$ is little changed from z= 6.6, while at fainter $L_{Ly\alpha}$ it is substantially reduced. Overall, we see a fourfold reduction in Ly$\alpha$ luminosity density from $z$ = 5.7 to 6.9. Combined with a more modest evolution of the continuum UV luminosity density, this suggests a factor of $\sim 3$ suppression of Ly$\alpha$ by radiative transfer through the $z \sim$ 7 intergalactic medium (IGM). It indicates an IGM neutral fraction $x_{HI}$ $\sim$ 0.4--0.6 (assuming Ly$\alpha$ velocity offsets of 100-200 km s$^{-1}$). The changing shape of the Ly$\alpha$ luminosity function between $z\lesssim 6.6$ and $z=6.9$ supports the hypothesis of ionized bubbles in a patchy reionization at $z\sim$ 7., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures (updated), 2 tables (updated), Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We mapped 3 mm continuum and line emission from the starburst galaxy M82 using the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy. We targeted the HCN, HCO$^{+}$, HNC, CS and HC$_{3}$N lines, but here we focus on the HCN and HCO$^{+}$ emission. The map covers a field of 1.2' with a ~5" resolution. The HCN and HCO$^{+}$ observations are combined with single dish images. The molecular gas in M82 had been previously found to be distributed in a molecular disk, coincident with the central starburst, and a galactic scale outflow which originates in the central starburst. With the new short spacings-corrected maps we derive some of the properties of the dense molecular gas in the base of the outflow. From the HCN and HCO$^{+}$ J=(1-0) line emission, and under the assumptions of the gas being optically thin and in local thermodynamic equilibrium, we place lower limits to the amount of dense molecular gas in the base of the outflow. The lower limits are $7\times10^{6}$ $M_{\odot}$ and $21\times10^{6}$ $M_{\odot}$, or $\gtrsim2\%$ of the total molecular mass in the outflow. The kinematics and spatial distribution of the dense gas outside the central starburst suggests that it is being expelled through chimneys. Assuming a constant outflow velocity, the derived outflow rate of dense molecular gas is $\geq0.3$ $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, which would lower the starburst lifetime by $\geq5\%$. This paper presents near-IR photometry of a selected sample of southern hemisphere E)A galaxies. The sample includes 50 galaxies from nearby (z D 0.05) and distant (z D 0.3) clusters, as well as E)A galaxies from the —eld (z D 0.1). Observations include 13 normal early-type galaxies from the —eld and from clusters to be compared with the E)A sample. The photometry includes J, H, and apparent K s magnitudes and colors. Observed colors are obtained from the apparent total magnitudes and compared with those of the GISSEL96 spectrophotometric models of galaxy evolution. There is an overall agree- ment between integrated colors of models and observed ones, for both the E)A galaxies located in clus- ters and those in the —eld, at However, large diUerences between colors predicted from models z ( 0.1. and those observed in E)A galaxies located in clusters at z D 0.3 are found. We also compute rest- frame colors for all the galaxies using two diUerent sets of K-corrections and obtain average colors for all the samples. This work investigates systematic properties of the E)A sample as a function of its environment. Results seem to indicate that cluster E)A galaxies (at low redshift) are bluer than —eld E)A galaxies at z D 0.1. Even this conclusion does not depend on whether we use comoving or rest- frame colors or on the models used to obtain rest-frame colors; the diUerence is not signi—cant enough, considering color dispersions between the samples. If the diUerences are real, they could imply a diUerent stellar content for the E)A galaxies located in the —eld compared with those located in the cluster E)A galaxies.

The aim of this paper is to study the stellar population of galaxies hosting an active galactic nucleus (AGN). We studied a sub-sample of hard X-ray emitting AGNs from the INTEGRAL and Swift catalogs which were previously identified and characterized through optical spectroscopy. Our analysis provides complementary information, namely age and metallicity, which is necessary to complete the panoramic view of such interesting objects. We selected hard X-ray emitting objects identified as AGNs by checking their optical spectra in search for absorption lines suitable for the stellar population analysis. We obtained a final sample consisting of 20 objects with redshift lower than 0.3. We used the full-spectrum fitting method and, in particular, the penalized pixel one applying the PPXF code. After masking all the regions affected by emission lines, we fitted the spectra with the MILES single stellar population templates and we derived mass-weighted ages and metallicities. Most of the objects in our sample show an old stellar population, but three of them are characterized by a bimodal distribution with a non negligible contribution from young stars. The values of the mass-weighted metallicity span a large range of metallicity with most of them slightly above the solar value. Within the framework of our program (running since 2004) of identification of hard X-ray INTEGRAL sources through optical spectroscopy, we present the results concerning the nature of 33 high-energy objects. The data were acquired with the use of six telescopes of different sizes and from one on-line archive. The results indicate that the majority of these objects (23 out of 33) are active galactic nuclei (AGNs), whereas 10 are sources in the local Universe with eight of which in the Galaxy and two in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Among the identified AGNs, 13 are of Type 1 (i.e., with broad emission lines), eight are of Type 2 (with narrow emissions only), and two are X-ray bright, optically normal galaxies with no apparent nuclear activity in the optical. Six of these AGNs lie at high redshift (z > 0.5). Concerning local objects, we found that five of them are Galactic cataclysmic variables, three are high-mass X-ray binaries (two of which lying in the SMC), one is a low-mass X-ray binary, and one is classified as a flare star that is likely of RS CVn type.
