Abstract

Nowadays, renewable energy conversion systems are mainly realized through a double-stage topology, which often combines a Boost chopper (DC-DC) and a three-phase Voltage Source Inverter (DC-AC). Although widely employed, this configuration presents some major drawbacks. New wide-bandgap (WBG) semi-conductors as SiC devices have led to consider alternative topologies, as the Current Source Inverter (CSI). When implementing WBG devices, the high level of conduction losses in the CSI are vastly improved. Moreover, an interleaved CSI is an extra solution to reduce the constraints on passives and semiconductor components, in addition to providing modularity. The aim of this paper is to analyze a parallel multilevel CSI using SiC devices for renewable energy applications. A dedicated tool to evaluate semiconductor losses is developed with this purpose.

Abstract

This paper details the digital implementation of a new observation strategy of the flying capacitor voltages dedicated to stacked multicell converters (SMC). This particular topology relies on the use of flying capacitors so as to equally share the voltage constraint on several semiconductors and increase the number of output levels. However, the SMC appropriate operation is guaranteed by the stability of the flying capacitor voltage levels, and the current flow creates variations of those quantities. The idea is therefore to develop an accurate estimation technique that avoids the utilization of differential sensors and allows the active control of the intermediate voltages. The observation has to meet several criteria. It must particularly reproduce in a quasi-analog way the dynamic of those quantities to enable the proper operation of the active control algorithm. The actual research scope thus focuses on the sliding mode observation of the flying capacitor voltages by means of phase current measurements. This paper summarizes the observer design, its digitizing, and the field-programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation. It also presents an interesting Very High Speed Integrated Circuit Hardware Description Language (VHDL)-Saber Cosimulation tool that allows validating the VHDL code before being downloaded in the FPGA of the physical system. The last section illustrates and emphasizes the performance and ruggedness of the implemented algorithm through promising experimental results. Abstract

Modulation of flying capacitor and stacked multicell converters is complicated by the fact that these converters have redundant states that achieve the same phase leg voltage output. Hence, a modulator must use some secondary criteria such as cell voltage balancing to fully define the converter switched state. Alternatively, the modulator can be adapted to directly specify the cell states, such as has been proposed for the harmonically optimal phase disposition (PD) strategy. However the techniques reported to date can lead to uneven distribution of switching transitions between cells, and the synthesis of narrow switched phase leg pulses. This paper presents an improved strategy that decouples the tasks of voltage level selection and switching event distribution. Conventional PD and centered space vector pulsewidth modulation (CSVPWM) strategies are used to define the target voltage level for the converter, and a finite state machine is then used to distribute the transitions to the converter cells in a cyclical fashion. Experimental results for a four-level flying capacitor inverter are presented, verifying that the natural balancing properties of this converter has been preserved, the cell switching utilization is equal and the expected harmonic gains of PD and CSVPWM compared to phase shifted carrier PWM have been achieved. Abstract

Peak current control is a strategy widely used to control power electronic systems such as forward converters or two-level choppers. This strategy is characterized by constant switching frequency with good dynamic performance. This paper presents the application of this strategy to a multilevel voltage-source converter. The algorithm ensures that the converter output current follows the target reference, but it must be modified to include voltage-level selection within the multilevel converter. The principle of operation is introduced, and the implementation of the algorithm using a field-programmable gate array is demonstrated. Simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the control technique. Abstract

When high dynamic performances are desired, multicell converters are an option, but they may require extra control loops. However, cost reduction does not allow using additional sensors, and low cost estimators and observers have to be developed. Field-programmable gates arrays (FPGAs) with high sampling frequency seem to be able to perform such functions. The aim of this paper is to show how co-simulation helps designing such estimators and predicting their performances. Abstract

Multicell converters were introduced ten years ago and, over this period, their properties have been thoroughly analyzed. Since then, this concept has lead to some other innovative topologies which are briefly presented in this paper. Different ways to introduce soft switching in multicell converters are investigated. The concept of distributing power over several switches, giving more degrees of freedom and using less passive components, is extended further with the stacked multiceli topology. Finally, direct ac-ac converters using the multicell approach are described. Abstract

The multicell converters introduced more than ten years ago make it possible to distribute the voltage constraints among series-connected switches and to improve the output waveforms (increased number of levels and apparent frequency). The balance of the constraints requires an appropriate distribution of the flying voltages. This paper presents some solutions for the active control of the voltages across the flying capacitors in the presence of rapid variation of the input voltage. The latter part of this paper is dedicated to the observation of these voltages using an original modeling of the converter. International audience; La commande modulaire de convertisseurs multicellulaires est une alternative aux techniques de commande usuelles. Des techniques d'entrelacement modulaires, appelés auto-entrelacement, ont été proposées dans la littérature et mises en œuvre dans des applications concrètes. Cependant, l'étude théorique de ce dispositif rebouclé n'a pas encore été menée. Cet article présente un modèle théorique comportemental dans un espace discrétisé pour un dispositif d'auto-entrelacement implémenté de façon numérique. Cette étude permet de donner les conditions de stabilité de l'auto-entrelacement en fonction des paramètres de l'application choisie. Une technique de décomposition modale permet de dissocier les divers types de réponses différentielles et d'observer leur évolution temporelle. Le système est inconditionnellement stable lorsque tous les modes différentiels sont correctement atténués.

Abstract

This paper proposes a fast, decentralized method for self-aligning the carriers of a multiphase/multilevel converter operating on the basis of phase-shifted pulse width modulation or level-shifted pulse width modulation. In the proposed method, each cell of the converter synchronizes and updates simultaneously its own carrier angle or carrier level based on the information shared with its neighboring cell, such as its angle/level, its index number, and the total number of activated cells of the converter. Different from the conventional decentralized method (with basic and modified updating rules), which requires some conditions in terms of cell number and initial carrier angles to start up and operate properly, the proposed method can be applied to the system with any number of cells and does not require special conditions of initial carrier angles. Further, while the conventional method needs an iteration process to adjust the inter-carrier phase-shifts and can be applied only to a multiphase converter which uses phase-shifted pulse width modulation, the proposed method offers an accurate and fast alignment of phases (for phase-shifted pulse width modulation) or levels (for level-shifted pulse width modulation) and thus can be applied to both multiphase and multilevel converter types. The simulations and the experimental results are presented in detail to show the validity and the effectiveness of the proposed methods. Further, thorough simulations on multiphase converters with different number of cells also show that the proposed method is much faster than the conventional method in both configuration and reconfiguration processes, especially in case the system has a large number of cells. Abstract

Dans le cadre de l’étude sur l’intérêt de l’hybridation électrique de la propulsion des futurs aéronefs, le travail réalisé consiste à proposer des structures de conversion de puissance et à pré-dimensionner une chaîne électrique forte puissance intégrant un bus continu haute tension, son câblage et l’électronique de puissance interfaçant le bus et la motorisation électrique. La première étape de cette étude consiste à déterminer la tension du bus DC en prenant en compte la problématique des décharges partielles qui limite la possibilité de l’augmentation du niveau de tension au niveau des conducteurs placés en zone non pressurisée. Pour choisir une plage de tension optimale, il est nécessaire d’étudier le rendement de plusieurs topologies multiniveaux mais cela est rendu difficile par la discrétisation des calibres en tension disponibles sur le marché des semi-conducteurs de puissance. Pour pallier à ce problème, une base de données de composants continue qui s’adapte à la tension de calibre souhaitée est créée en extrapolant les familles de composants existants.

Abstract

Cet article présente un support pédagogique destiné à l’enseignement de l’informatique industrielle en première année de la filière ingénieur en Génie Electrique et Automatique de l’ENSEEIHT à Toulouse. L’objectif de ce support d’enseignement est d’expliquer et d’illustrer le fonctionnement interne d’un microprocesseur générique simple (Unité centrale de traitement communément appelé CPU) et plus spécifiquement les principes fondamentaux liées aux interactions logiciel-matériel. Couplée à un émulateur de microprocesseur (EROS) entièrement développé au département, une interface logicielle a été mise en place pour permettre de simuler des échanges d’informations entre le processeur émulé et une application virtuelle.

Abstract

Cet article présente la mise en place d’un réseau d’automates programmables industriels (API) pour la gestion et la commande de maquettes pédagogiques. Ces API sont utilisés comme support de formation à l’automatique et l’informatique industrielle. L’utilisation d’API couplés en réseaux, permet de se rapprocher de situations industrielles réelles, tout en abordant la problématique fondamentale de la logique programmée. L’implantation de commandes de process dans les API, sous différents langages (langage à contacts-LD, GRAFCET-SFC, statement list-SL), permet d’asseoir ou d’aborder différentes notions essentielles de l’informatique industrielle (gestion des mémoires, structure des programmes, synchronisme). Les manipulations associées aux API sont utilisées en première et deuxième années de la formation des élèves ingénieurs du département de formation Génie Electrique et Automatique de l’ENSEEIHT (Ecole Supérieure d’Electrotechnique, d’Electronique, d’Hydraulique et de Télécommunication de Toulouse).

42. Short fail-safe capability and fault diagnosis strategies dedicated to a reconfigurable 5-level double-boost PFC

Abstract

A new 5-level reconfigurable PFC topology with low energy short-failure capability and fast fault-diagnosis is proposed. It includes a 2-stacked low energy 3-level Fly-Cap Boost through two input low frequency rectifiers. 600V–30kHz devices in series pear stack allow one short-fault for transistor and up to two short-faults for diodes. Firstly, authors shows for the first time the low ageing drift and the great stability of the parasite short-failure resistance (Rsc) of failed CoolMos™ transistors and SiC diodes inside well known epoxy molded package (TO220/TO247/TO3P cases). Secondly, two fault-diagnosis strategies are presented: one directly monitors the voltages across the flying capacitors to detect and to localize the faulty switch by means of two sensors; other is based on a harmonic detection (magnitude and phase-shift) at the switching frequency through only one voltage sensor at the input of the PFC. All these strategies are analyzed and simulated with the efficient PD-PWM technique that exhibits a lower THD of the leg-leg input voltage for three-phase application. The design and the most important features are highlighted thanks to a digital control frame and a single-phase mock-up rated to AC115V–DC400V — 4kW–4×31kHz.

Multilevel structures are becoming more and more common in the industry because they can convert a DC voltage into an AC voltage for high-power and medium voltage condition. However there are limitations in some topologies where the DC Bus is divided by capacitors. With 3 or more DC bus capacitors, it is difficult to ensure the voltages balance across each capacitor. This paper proposes a 5-level structure based on the SMC converter (Stacked Multicell Converter). The study of this structure is focused on the DC-AC conversion and the balance of the capacitors voltages. The way used to accomplish these objectives are based on the transfer of energy from one to another capacitor through an inductive storage element.

Abstract

This paper presents a new observation strategy of the capacitor voltages dedicated to high voltage Stacked Multicell Converters (SMC). The proper operation of this particular converter relies on the equal repartition of the voltage constraints over the semiconductors. That imposes that the capacitor voltages remain constant. These voltages can be actively controlled so as to ensure this requirement but this procedure necessitates the knowledge of those quantities at each time but it is both difficult and expensive to measure them considering the voltage levels, which motivates the actual research scope. The solution presented in this paper is based on a sliding mode observation of the capacitor voltages by means of phase current measurements.
