The adoption of distributed energy resources such as photovoltaics (PVs) has increased dramatically during the previous decade. The increased penetration of PVs into distribution networks (DNs) can cause voltage fluctuations that have to be mitigated. One of the key utility assets employed to this end are step-voltage regulators (SVRs). It is desirable to include tap selection of SVRs in optimal power flow (OPF) routines, a task that turns out to be challenging because the resultant OPF problem is nonconvex with added complexities stemming from accurate SVR modeling. While several convex relaxations based on semi-definite programming (SDP) have been presented in the literature for optimal tap selection, SDP-based schemes do not scale well and are challenging to implement in large-scale planning or operational frameworks. This paper deals with the optimal tap selection (OPTS) problem for wye-connected SVRs using linear approximations of power flow equations. Specifically, the $\textit{LinDist3Flow}$ model is adopted and the effective SVR ratio is assumed to be continuous--enabling the formulation of a problem called $\textit{LinDist3Flow-OPTS}$, which amounts to a linear program. The scalability and optimality gap of $\textit{LinDist3Flow-OPTS}$ are evaluated with respect to existing SDP-based and nonlinear programming techniques for optimal tap selection in three standard feeders, namely, the IEEE 13-bus, 123-bus, and 8500-node DNs. Phasor measurement units ({PMUs}) have become instrumental in modern power systems for enabling real-time, wide-area monitoring and control. Accordingly, many studies have investigated efficient and robust dynamic state estimation (DSE) methods in order to accurately compute the dynamic states of generation units. Nonetheless, most of them forego the dynamic-algebraic nature of power networks and only consider their nonlinear dynamic representations. Motivated by the lack of DSE methods based on power network's differential-algebraic equations (DAEs), this paper develops a novel observer-based DSE framework in order to perform simultaneous estimation of the dynamic and algebraic states of multi-machine power networks. Specifically, we leverage the DAE dynamics of a power network around an operating point and combine them with a PMU-based measurement model capable of capturing bus voltages and line currents. The proposed $\mathcal{H}_{\infty}$ observer, which only requires detectability and impulse observability conditions which are satisfied for various power networks, is designed to handle various noise, unknown inputs, and input sensor failures. The results obtained from performing extensive numerical simulations on the IEEE $9$-bus and $39$-bus systems showcase the effectiveness of the proposed approach for DSE purposes.

This paper presents a novel time synchronization attack (TSA) model for the Global Positioning System (GPS) based on clock data behavior changes in a higher-order derivative domain. Further, the time synchronization attack rejection and mitigation based on sparse domain (TSARM-S) is presented. TSAs affect stationary GPS receivers in applications where precise timing is required, such as cellular communications, financial transactions, and monitoring of the electric power grid. In the present work, the clock bias and clock drift are monitored at higher-order clock data derivatives where the TSA is seen as a sparse spike-like event. The smoothness of the attack relates to the derivative order where the sparsity is observed. The proposed method jointly estimates a dynamic solution for GPS timing and rejects behavior changes based on such sparse events. An evaluation procedure is presented for two testbeds, namely a commercial receiver and a software-defined radio. Further, the proposed method is evaluated against distinct real-dataset Texas Spoofing Test Battery (TEXBAT) scenarios. Combined synthetic and real-data results show an average RMS clock bias error of 12.08 m for the SDR platform, and 45.74 m for the commercial device. Further, the technique is evaluated against state-of-the-art mitigation techniques and in a spoofing-plus-multipath scenario for robustness. Real-time water quality (WQ) sensors in water distribution networks (WDN) have the potential to enable network-wide observability of water quality indicators, contamination event detection, and closed-loop feedback control of WQ dynamics. To that end, prior research has investigated a wide range of methods that guide the geographic placement of WQ sensors. These methods assign a metric for fixed sensor placement (SP) followed by \textit{metric-optimization} to obtain optimal SP. These metrics include minimizing intrusion detection time, minimizing the expected population and amount of contaminated water affected by an intrusion event. In contrast to the literature, the objective of this paper is to provide a computational method that considers the overlooked metric of state estimation and network-wide observability of the WQ dynamics. This metric finds the optimal WQ sensor placement that minimizes the state estimation error via the Kalman filter for noisy WQ dynamics -- a metric that quantifies WDN observability. To that end, the state-space dynamics of WQ states for an entire WDN are given and the observability-driven sensor placement algorithm is presented. The algorithm takes into account the time-varying nature of WQ dynamics due to changes in the hydraulic profile -- a collection of hydraulic states including heads (pressures) at nodes and flow rates in links which are caused by a demand profile over a certain period of time. Thorough case studies are given, highlighting key findings, observations, and recommendations for WDN operators. Github codes are included for reproducibility.

This work proposes a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) spoofing detection and classification technique for single antenna receivers. We formulate an optimization problem at the baseband correlator domain by using the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO). We model correlator tap outputs of the received signal to form a dictionary of triangle-shaped functions and leverage sparse signal processing to choose a decomposition of shifted matching triangles from said dictionary. The optimal solution of this minimization problem discriminates the presence of a potential spoofing attack peak by observing a decomposition of two different code-phase values (authentic and spoofed) in a sparse vector output. We use a threshold to mitigate false alarms. Furthermore, we present a variation of the minimization problem by enhancing the dictionary to a higher-resolution of shifted triangles. The proposed technique can be implemented as an advanced fine-acquisition monitoring tool to aid in the tracking loops for spoofing mitigation. In our experiments, we are able to distinguish authentic and spoofer peaks from synthetic data simulations and from a real dataset, namely, the Texas Spoofing Test Battery (TEXBAT). State estimation in water distribution networks (WDN), the problem of estimating all unknown network heads and flows given select measurements, is challenging due to the nonconvexity of hydraulic models and significant uncertainty from water demands, network parameters, and measurements. To this end, a probabilistic modeling for state estimation (PSE) in WDNs is proposed. After linearizing the nonlinear hydraulic WDN model, the proposed PSE shows that the covariance matrix of unknown system states (unmeasured heads and flows) can be linearly expressed by the covariance matrix of three uncertainty sources (i.e., measurement noise, network parameters, and water demands). Instead of providing deterministic results for unknown states, the proposed PSE approach (i) regards the system states and uncertainty sources as random variables and yields variances of individual unknown states, (ii) considers thorough modeling of various types of valves and measurement scenarios in WDNs, and (iii) is also useful for uncertainty quantification, extended period simulations, and confidence limit analysis. The effectiveness and scalability of the proposed approach is tested using several WDN case studies.

Addressing challenges in urban water infrastructure systems including aging infrastructure, supply uncertainty, extreme events, and security threats, depend highly on water distribution networks modeling emphasizing the importance of realistic assumptions, modeling complexities, and scalable solutions. In this study, we propose a derivative-free, linear approximation for solving the network water flow problem (WFP). The proposed approach takes advantage of the special form of the nonlinear head loss equations and, after the transformation of variables and constraints, the WFP reduces to a linear optimization problem that can be efficiently solved by modern linear solvers. Ultimately, the proposed approach amounts to solving a series of linear optimization problems. We demonstrate the proposed approach through several case studies and show that the approach can model arbitrary network topologies and various types of valves and pumps, thus providing modeling flexibility. Under mild conditions, we show that the proposed linear approximation converges. We provide sensitivity analysis and discuss in detail the current limitations of our approach and suggest solutions to overcome these. State estimation (SE) of water distribution networks (WDNs) is difficult to solve due to nonlinearity/nonconvexity of water flow models, uncertainties from parameters and demands, lack of redundancy of measurements, and inaccurate flow and pressure measurements. This paper proposes a new, scalable successive linear approximation to solve the SE problem in WDNs. The approach amounts to solving either a sequence of linear or quadratic programs---depending on the operators' objectives. The proposed successive linear approximation offers a seamless way of dealing with valve/pump model nonconvexities, is different than a first order Taylor series linearization, and can incorporate with robust uncertainty modeling. Optimal, network-driven control of Water Distribution Networks (WDN) is very difficult: valve and pump models form non-trivial, combinatorial logic; hydraulic models are nonconvex; water demand patterns are uncertain; and WDN are naturally large-scale. Prior research on control of WDN addressed major research challenges, yet either (i) adopted simplified hydraulic models, WDN topologies, and rudimentary valve/pump modeling or (ii) used mixed-integer, nonconvex optimization to solve WDN control problems. The objective of this paper is to develop tractable computational algorithms to manage WDN operation, while considering arbitrary topology, flow direction, an abundance of valve types, control objectives, hydraulic models, and operational constraints---all while only using convex, continuous optimization. Specifically, we propose new Geometric Programming (GP)-based Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithms, designed to solve the water flow equations and obtain WDN controls, i.e., pump/valve schedules alongside heads and flows. The proposed approach amounts to solving a series of convex optimization problems that graciously scale to large networks. The proposed approach is tested using a 126-node network with many valves and pumps and shown to outperform traditional, rule-based control. The operation of critical infrastructures such as the electrical power grid, cellphone towers, and financial institutions relies on precise timing provided by stationary GPS receivers. These GPS devices are vulnerable to a type of spoofing called Time Synchronization Attack (TSA), whose objective is to maliciously alter the timing provided by the GPS receiver. The objective of this paper is to design a tuning-free, low memory robust estimator to mitigate such spoofing attacks. The contribution is that the proposed method dispenses with several limitations found in the existing state-of-the-art methods in the literature that require parameter tuning, availability of the statistical distributions of noise, real-time optimization, or heavy computations. Specifically, we (i) utilize an observer design for linear systems under unknown inputs, (ii) adjust it to include a state-correction algorithm, (iii) design a realistic experimental setup with real GPS data and sensible spoofing attacks, and (iv) showcase how the proposed tuning-free, low memory robust estimator can combat TSAs. Smart inverters have been advocated as a fast-responding mechanism for voltage regulation in distribution grids. Nevertheless, optimal inverter coordination can be computationally demanding, and preset local control rules are known to be subpar. Leveraging tools from machine learning, the design of customized inverter control rules is posed here as a multi-task learning problem. Each inverter control rule is modeled as a possibly nonlinear function of local and/or remote control inputs. Given the electric coupling, the function outputs interact to yield the feeder voltage profile. Using an approximate grid model, inverter rules are designed jointly to minimize a voltage deviation objective based on anticipated load and solar generation scenarios. Each control rule is described by a set of coefficients, one for each training scenario. To reduce the communication overhead between the grid operator and the inverters, we devise a voltage regulation objective that is shown to promote parsimonious descriptions for inverter control rules. Numerical tests using real-world data on a benchmark feeder demonstrate the advantages of the novel nonlinear rules and explore the trade-off between voltage regulation and sparsity in rule descriptions.

Control of water distribution networks (WDNs) can be represented by an optimization problem with hydraulic models describing the nonlinear relationship between head loss, water flow, and demand. The problem is difficult to solve due to the non-convexity in the equations governing water flow. Previous methods used to obtain WDN controls (i.e., operational schedules for pumps and valves) have adopted simplified hydraulic models. One common assumption found in the literature is the modification of WDN topology to exclude loops and assume a known water flow direction. In this paper, we present a new geometric programming-based model predictive control approach, designed to solve the water flow equations and obtain WDN controls. The paper considers the nonlinear difference algebraic equation (DAE) form of the WDN dynamics, and the GP approach amounts to solving a series of convex optimization problems and requires neither the knowledge of water flow direction nor does it restrict the water network topology. This paper develops a branch-flow based optimal power flow (OPF) problem for multi-phase distribution networks that allows for tap selection of wye, closed-delta, and open-delta step-voltage regulators (SVRs). SVRs are assumed ideal and their taps are represented by continuous decision variables. To tackle the non-linearity, the branch-flow semidefinite programming framework of traditional OPF is expanded to accommodate SVR edges. Three types of non-convexity are addressed: (a) rank-1 constraints on non-SVR edges, (b) nonlinear equality constraints on SVR power flows and taps, and (c) trilinear equalities on SVR voltages and taps. Leveraging a practical phase-separation assumption on the SVR secondary voltage, novel McCormick relaxations are provided for (c) and certain rank-1 constraints of (a), while dropping the rest. A linear relaxation based on conservation of power is used in place of (b). The problem of placing or selecting sensors and control nodes plays a pivotal role in the operation of dynamic networks. This paper proposes optimal algorithms and heuristics to solve the simultaneous sensor and actuator selection problem in linear dynamic networks. In particular, a sufficiency condition of static output feedback stabilizability is used to obtain the minimal set of sensors and control nodes needed to stabilize an unstable network. We show the joint sensor/actuator selection and output feedback control can be written as a mixed-integer nonconvex problem. To solve this nonconvex combinatorial problem, three methods based on (1) mixed-integer nonlinear programming, (2) binary search algorithms, and (3) simple heuristics are proposed. The first method yields optimal solutions to the selection problem---given that some constants are appropriately selected. The second method requires a database of binary sensor/actuator combinations, returns optimal solutions, and necessitates no tuning parameters. The third approach is a heuristic that yields suboptimal solutions but is computationally attractive. The theoretical properties of these methods are discussed and numerical tests on dynamic networks showcase the trade-off between optimality and computational time.

Distribution grids are currently challenged by frequent voltage excursions induced by intermittent solar generation. Smart inverters have been advocated as a fast-responding means to regulate voltage and minimize ohmic losses. Since optimal inverter coordination may be computationally challenging and preset local control rules are subpar, the approach of customized control rules designed in a quasi-static fashion features as a golden middle. Departing from affine control rules, this work puts forth non-linear inverter control policies. Drawing analogies to multi-task learning, reactive control is posed as a kernel-based regression task. Leveraging a linearized grid model and given anticipated data scenarios, inverter rules are jointly designed at the feeder level to minimize a convex combination of voltage deviations and ohmic losses via a linearly-constrained quadratic program. This paper develops a fixed-point iteration to solve the steady-state water flow equations in an urban water distribution network. The fixed-point iteration is derived upon the assumption of turbulent flow solutions and the validity of the Hazen-Williams head loss formula for water flow. Local convergence is ensured if the spectral radius of the Jacobian at the solution is smaller than one. The implication is that the solution is at least locally unique and that the spectral radius of the Jacobian provides an estimate of the convergence speed. In most dynamic networks, it is impractical to measure all of the system states; instead, only a subset of the states are measured through sensors. Consequently, and unlike full state feedback controllers, output feedback control utilizes only the measured states to obtain a stable closed-loop performance. This paper explores the interplay between the selection of minimal number of sensors and actuators (SaA) that yield a stable closed-loop system performance. Through the formulation of the static output feedback control problem, we show that the simultaneous selection of minimal set of SaA is a combinatorial optimization problem with mixed-integer nonlinear matrix inequality constraints. To address the computational complexity, we develop two approaches: The first approach relies on integer/disjunctive programming principles, while the second approach is a simple algorithm that is akin to binary search routines. Sensors such as phasor measurement units (PMUs) endowed with GPS receivers are ubiquitously installed providing real-time grid visibility. A number of PMUs can cooperatively enable state estimation routines. However, GPS spoofing attacks can notably alter the PMU measurements, mislead the network operator, and drastically impact subsequent corrective control actions. Leveraging a novel measurement model that explicitly accounts for the GPS spoofing attacks, this paper formulates an optimization problem to identify the most vulnerable PMUs in the network. A greedy algorithm is developed to solve the aforementioned problem. Furthermore, the paper develops a computationally efficient alternating minimization algorithm for joint state estimation and attack reconstruction. The design of robots that are light, soft, powerful is a grand challenge. Since they can easily adapt to dynamic environments, soft robotic systems have the potential of changing the status-quo of bulky robotics. A crucial component of soft robotics is a soft actuator that is activated by external stimuli to generate desired motions. Unfortunately, there is a lack of powerful soft actuators that operate through lightweight power sources. To that end, we recently designed a highly scalable, flexible, biocompatible Electromagnetic Soft Actuator (ESA). With ESAs, artificial muscles can be designed by integrating a network of ESAs. The main research gap addressed in this work is in the absence of system-theoretic understanding of the impact of the realtime control and actuator selection algorithms on the performance of networked soft-body actuators and ESAs. The objective of this paper is to establish a framework that guides the analysis and robust control of networked ESAs. A novel ESA is described, and a configuration of soft actuator matrix to resemble artificial muscle fiber is presented. A mathematical model which depicts the physical network is derived, considering the disturbances due to external forces and linearization errors as an integral part of this model. Uncertainty from renewable energy and loads is one of the major challenges for stable grid operation. Various approaches have been explored to remedy these uncertainties. In this paper, we design centralized or decentralized state-feedback controllers for generators while considering worst-case uncertainty. Specifically, this paper introduces the notion of $\mathcal{L}_{\infty}$ robust control and stability for uncertain power networks. Uncertain and nonlinear differential algebraic equation model of the network is presented. The model includes unknown disturbances from renewables and loads. Given an operating point, the linearized state-space presentation is given. Then, the notion of $\mathcal{L}_{\infty}$ robust control and stability is discussed, resulting in a nonconvex optimization routine that yields a state feedback gain mitigating the impact of disturbances. The developed routine includes explicit input-bound constraints on generators' inputs and a measure of the worst-case disturbance. The feedback control architecture can be centralized, distributed, or decentralized. Algorithms based on successive convex approximations are then given to address the nonconvexity. This paper introduces the Time Synchronization Attack Rejection and Mitigation (TSARM) technique for Time Synchronization Attacks (TSAs) over the Global Positioning System (GPS). The technique estimates the clock bias and drift of the GPS receiver along with the possible attack contrary to previous approaches. Having estimated the time instants of the attack, the clock bias and drift of the receiver are corrected. The proposed technique is computationally efficient and can be easily implemented in real time, in a fashion complementary to standard algorithms for position, velocity, and time estimation in off-the-shelf receivers. The performance of this technique is evaluated on a set of collected data from a real GPS receiver. Our method renders excellent time recovery consistent with the application requirements. The numerical results demonstrate that the TSARM technique outperforms competing approaches in the literature.

We propose methods to solve time-varying, sensor and actuator (SaA) selection problems for uncertain cyber-physical systems. We show that many SaA selection problems for optimizing a variety of control and estimation metrics can be posed as semidefinite optimization problems with mixed-integer bilinear matrix inequalities (MIBMIs). Although this class of optimization problems are computationally challenging, we present tractable approaches that directly tackle MIBMIs, providing both upper and lower bounds, and that lead to effective heuristics for SaA selection. The upper and lower bounds are obtained via successive convex approximations and semidefinite programming relaxations, respectively, and selections are obtained with a novel slicing algorithm from the solutions of the bounding problems. Custom branch-and-bound and combinatorial greedy approaches are also developed for a broad class of systems for comparison. Finally, comprehensive numerical experiments are performed to compare the different methods and illustrate their effectiveness.

In this paper, the optimal power flow (OPF) problem is augmented to account for the costs associated with the load-following control of a power network. Load-following control costs are expressed through the linear quadratic regulator (LQR). The power network is described by a set of nonlinear differential algebraic equations (DAEs). By linearizing the DAEs around a known equilibrium, a linearized OPF that accounts for steady-state operational constraints is formulated first. This linearized OPF is then augmented by a set of linear matrix inequalities that are algebraically equivalent to the implementation of an LQR controller. The resulting formulation, termed LQR-OPF, is a semidefinite program which furnishes optimal steady-state setpoints and an optimal feedback law to steer the system to the new steady state with minimum load-following control costs. Numerical tests demonstrate that the setpoints computed by LQR-OPF result in lower overall costs and frequency deviations compared to the setpoints of a scheme where OPF and load-following control are considered separately., Comment: This article has been accepted for publication in the IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid

This paper puts forth a mathematical framework for Buildings-to-Grid (BtG) integration in smart cities. The framework explicitly couples power grid and building's control actions and operational decisions, and can be utilized by buildings and power grids operators to simultaneously optimize their performance. Simplified dynamics of building clusters and building-integrated power networks with algebraic equations are presented---both operating at different time-scales. A model predictive control (MPC)-based algorithm that formulates the BtG integration and accounts for the time-scale discrepancy is developed. The formulation captures dynamic and algebraic power flow constraints of power networks and is shown to be numerically advantageous. The paper analytically establishes that the BtG integration yields a reduced total system cost in comparison with decoupled designs where grid and building operators determine their controls separately. The developed framework is tested on standard power networks that include thousands of buildings modeled using industrial data. Case studies demonstrate building energy savings and significant frequency regulation, while these findings carry over in network simulations with nonlinear power flows and mismatch in building model parameters. The theme of this paper is three-phase distribution system modeling suitable for the Z-Bus load-flow. Detailed models of wye and delta constant-power, constant-current, and constant-impedance loads are presented. Models of transmission lines, voltage regulators, and transformers that build the bus admittance matrix (Y-Bus) are laid out. The Z-Bus load-flow is then reviewed and the singularity of the Y-Bus in case of certain transformer connections is rigorously discussed. Based on realistic assumptions and conventional modifications, the invertibility of the Y-Bus is proved. This paper introduces novel schemes for indoor localization, outlier detection, and radio map interpolation using Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). The localization method consists of a novel multicomponent optimization technique that minimizes the squared $\ell_{2}$-norm of the residuals between the radio map and the online Received Signal Strength (RSS) measurements, the $\ell_{1}$-norm of the user's location vector, and weighted $\ell_{2}$-norms of layered groups of Reference Points (RPs). RPs are grouped using a new criterion based on the similarity between the so-called Access Point (AP) coverage vectors. In addition, since AP readings are prone to containing inordinate readings, called outliers, an augmented optimization problem is proposed to detect the outliers and localize the user with cleaned online measurements. Moreover, a novel scheme to record fingerprints from a smaller number of RPs and estimate the radio map at RPs without recorded fingerprints is developed using sparse recovery techniques. All localization schemes are tested on RSS fingerprints collected from a real environment. The overall scheme has comparable complexity with competing approaches, while it performs with high accuracy under a small number of APs and finer granularity of RPs.

Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) has become a promising choice for indoor positioning as the only existing and established infrastructure, to localize the mobile and stationary users indoors. However, since WLAN has been initially designed for wireless networking and not positioning, the localization task based on WLAN signals has several challenges. Amongst the WLAN positioning methods, WLAN fingerprinting localization has recently achieved great attention due to its promising results. WLAN fingerprinting faces several challenges and hence, in this paper, our goal is to overview these challenges and the state-of-the-art solutions. This paper consists of three main parts: 1) Conventional localization schemes; 2) State-of-the-art approaches; 3) Practical deployment challenges. Since all the proposed methods in WLAN literature have been conducted and tested in different settings, the reported results are not equally comparable. So, we compare some of the main localization schemes in a single real environment and assess their localization accuracy, positioning error statistics, and complexity. Our results depict illustrative evaluation of WLAN localization systems and guide to future improvement opportunities.

In this paper, we introduce two indoor Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) positioning methods using augmented sparse recovery algorithms. These schemes render a sparse user's position vector, and in parallel, minimize the distance between the online measurement and radio map. The overall localization scheme for both methods consists of three steps: 1) coarse localization, obtained from comparing the online measurements with clustered radio map. A novel graph-based method is proposed to cluster the offline fingerprints. In the online phase, a Region Of Interest (ROI) is selected within which we search for the user's location; 2) Access Point (AP) selection; and 3) fine localization through the novel sparse recovery algorithms. Since the online measurements are subject to inordinate measurement readings, called outliers, the sparse recovery methods are modified in order to jointly estimate the outliers and user's position vector. The outlier detection procedure identifies the APs whose readings are either not available or erroneous. The proposed localization methods have been tested with Received Signal Strength (RSS) measurements in a typical office environment and the results show that they can localize the user with significantly high accuracy and resolution which is superior to the results from competing WLAN fingerprinting localization methods.

This paper derives a set of sufficient conditions guaranteeing that the load-flow problem in unbalanced three-phase distribution networks with wye and delta ZIP loads has a unique solution over a region that can be explicitly calculated from the network parameters. This paper develops a power management scheme that jointly optimizes the real power consumption of programmable loads and reactive power outputs of photovoltaic (PV) inverters in distribution networks. The premise is to determine the optimal demand response schedule that accounts for the stochastic availability of solar power, as well as to control the reactive power generation or consumption of PV inverters adaptively to the real power injections of all PV units. These uncertain real power injections by PV units are modeled as random variables taking values from a finite number of possible scenarios. Through the use of second order cone relaxation of the power flow equations, a convex stochastic program is formulated. The objectives are to minimize the negative user utility, cost of power provision, and thermal losses, while constraining voltages to remain within specified levels. To find the global optimum point, a decentralized algorithm is developed via the alternating direction method of multipliers that results in closed-form updates per node and per scenario, rendering it suitable to implement in distribution networks with large number of scenarios. A fast distributed approach is developed for the market clearing with large-scale demand response in electric power networks. In addition to conventional supply bids, demand offers from aggregators serving large numbers of residential smart appliances with different energy constraints are incorporated. Leveraging the Lagrangian relaxation based dual decomposition, the resulting optimization problem is decomposed into separate subproblems, and then solved in a distributed fashion by the market operator and each aggregator aided by the end-user smart meters. A disaggregated bundle method is adapted for solving the dual problem with a separable structure. Compared with the conventional dual update algorithms, the proposed approach exhibits faster convergence speed, which results in reduced communication overhead. High wind energy penetration critically challenges the economic dispatch of current and future power systems. Supply and demand must be balanced at every bus of the grid, while respecting transmission line ratings and accounting for the stochastic nature of renewable energy sources. Aligned to that goal, a network-constrained economic dispatch is developed in this paper. To account for the uncertainty of renewable energy forecasts, wind farm schedules are determined so that they can be delivered over the transmission network with a prescribed probability. Given that the distribution of wind power forecasts is rarely known, and/or uncertainties may yield non-convex feasible sets for the power schedules, a scenario approximation technique using Monte Carlo sampling is pursued. Upon utilizing the structure of the DC optimal power flow (OPF), a distribution-free convex problem formulation is derived whose complexity scales well with the wind forecast sample size. The smart grid vision is to revitalize the electric power network by leveraging the proven sensing, communication, control, and machine learning technologies to address pressing issues related to security, stability, environmental impact, market diversity, and novel power technologies. Significant effort and investment have been committed to architect the necessary infrastructure by installing advanced metering systems and establishing data communication networks throughout the grid. Signal processing methodologies are expected to play a major role in this context by providing intelligent algorithms that fully exploit such pervasive sensing and control capabilities to realize the vision and manifold anticipated benefits of the smart grid. In this feature article, analytical background and relevance of signal processing tools to power systems are delineated, while introducing major challenges and opportunities for the future grid engineering. Due to its reduced communication overhead and robustness to failures, distributed energy management is of paramount importance in smart grids, especially in microgrids, which feature distributed generation (DG) and distributed storage (DS). Distributed economic dispatch for a microgrid with high renewable energy penetration and demand-side management operating in grid-connected mode is considered in this paper. To address the intrinsically stochastic availability of renewable energy sources (RES), a novel power scheduling approach is introduced. The approach involves the actual renewable energy as well as the energy traded with the main grid, so that the supply-demand balance is maintained. The optimal scheduling strategy minimizes the microgrid net cost, which includes DG and DS costs, utility of dispatchable loads, and worst-case transaction cost stemming from the uncertainty in RES. Leveraging the dual decomposition, the optimization problem formulated is solved in a distributed fashion by the local controllers of DG, DS, and dispatchable loads. In various applications, the effect of errors in gradient-based iterations is of particular importance when seeking saddle points of the Lagrangian function associated with constrained convex optimization problems. Of particular interest here are problems arising in power control applications, where network utility is maximized subject to minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints, maximum interference constraints, maximum received power constraints, or simultaneous minimum and maximum SINR constraints. Especially when the gradient iterations are executed in a disributed fashion, imperfect exchanges among the link nodes may result in erroneous gradient vectors. In order to assess and cope with such errors, two running averages (ergodic sequences) are formed from the iterates generated by the perturbed saddle point method, each with complementary strengths. Under the assumptions of problem convexity and error boundedness, bounds on the constraint violation and the suboptimality per iteration index are derived. A cross-layer design along with an optimal resource allocation framework is formulated for wireless fading networks, where the nodes are allowed to perform network coding. The aim is to jointly optimize end-to-end transport layer rates, network code design variables, broadcast link flows, link capacities, average power consumption, and short-term power allocation policies. As in the routing paradigm where nodes simply forward packets, the cross-layer optimization problem with network coding is non-convex in general. It is proved however, that with network coding, dual decomposition for multicast is optimal so long as the fading at each wireless link is a continuous random variable. This lends itself to provably convergent subgradient algorithms, which not only admit a layered-architecture interpretation but also optimally integrate network coding in the protocol stack. The dual algorithm is also paired with a scheme that yields near-optimal network design variables, namely multicast end-to-end rates, network code design quantities, flows over the broadcast links, link capacities, and average power consumption. Finally, an asynchronous subgradient method is developed, whereby the dual updates at the physical layer can be affordably performed with a certain delay with respect to the resource allocation tasks in upper layers.
