A neural network-based framework is developed and experimentally demonstrated for the problem of estimating the shape of a soft continuum arm (SCA) from noisy measurements of the pose at a finite number of locations along the length of the arm. The neural network takes as input these measurements and produces as output a finite-dimensional approximation of the strain, which is further used to reconstruct the infinite-dimensional smooth posture. This problem is important for various soft robotic applications. It is challenging due to the flexible aspects that lead to the infinite-dimensional reconstruction problem for the continuous posture and strains. Because of this, past solutions to this problem are computationally intensive. The proposed fast smooth reconstruction method is shown to be five orders of magnitude faster while having comparable accuracy. Understanding the orientation of geological structures is crucial for analyzing the complexity of the Earths' subsurface. For instance, information about geological structure orientation can be incorporated into local anisotropic regularization methods as a valuable tool to stabilize the solution of inverse problems and produce geologically plausible solutions. We introduce a new variational method that employs the alternating direction method of multipliers within an alternating minimization scheme to jointly estimate orientation and model parameters in both 2D and 3D inverse problems. Specifically, the proposed approach adaptively integrates recovered information about structural orientation, enhancing the effectiveness of anisotropic Tikhonov regularization in recovering geophysical parameters. The paper also discusses the automatic tuning of algorithmic parameters to maximize the new method's performance. The proposed algorithm is tested across diverse 2D and 3D examples, including structure-oriented denoising and trace interpolation. The results show that the algorithm is robust in solving the considered large and challenging problems, alongside efficiently estimating the associated tilt field in 2D cases and the dip, strike, and tilt fields in 3D cases. Synthetic and field examples show that the proposed anisotropic regularization method produces a model with enhanced resolution and provides a more accurate representation of the true structures.

We consider the planar Taylor-Couette system for the steady motion of a viscous incompressible fluid in the region between two concentric disks, the inner one being at rest and the outer one rotating with constant angular speed. We study the uniqueness and multiplicity of solutions to the forced system in different classes. For any angular velocity we prove that the classical Taylor-Couette flow is the unique smooth solution displaying rotational symmetry. Instead, we show that infinitely many solutions arise, even for arbitrarily small angular velocities, in a larger, class of \textit{incomplete} solutions that we introduce. By prescribing the transversal flux, unique solvability of the Taylor-Couette system is recovered among rotationally invariant incomplete solutions. Finally, we study the behavior of these solutions as the radius of the outer disk goes to infinity, connecting our results with the celebrated Stokes paradox., Comment: 26 pages

We furnish necessary and sufficient conditions for the occurrence of a Hopf bifurcation in a particularly significant fluid-structure problem, where a Navier-Stokes liquid interacts with a rigid body that is subject to an undamped elastic restoring force. The motion of the coupled system is driven by a uniform flow at spatial infinity, with constant dimensionless velocity $\lambda>0$. In particular, if the relevant linearized operator meets suitable spectral properties, there exists a threshold $\lambda_o>0$ above which a bifurcating time-periodic branch stems out of the branch of steady-state solutions. The most remarkable feature of our result is that no restriction is imposed on the frequency $\omega$ of the bifurcating solution, which may thus coincide with one of the natural structural frequencies $\omega_{\sf n}$ of the body. Therefore, resonance cannot occur as a result of this bifurcation. However, when $\omega\to\omega_{\sf n}$, the amplitude of oscillations may become very large when the fluid density is negligible compared to the mass of the body. We study certain significant properties of the equilibrium configurations of a rigid body subject to an undamped elastic restoring force, in the stream of a viscous liquid in an unbounded 3D domain. The motion of the coupled system is driven by a uniform flow at spatial infinity, with constant dimensionless velocity $\lambda$. We show that if $\lambda$ is below a critical value, $\lambda_c$ (say), there is a unique and stable time-independent configuration, where the body is in equilibrium and the flow is steady. We also prove that, if $\lambda<\lambda_c$, no oscillatory flow may occur. Successively, we investigate possible loss of uniqueness by providing necessary and sufficient conditions for the occurrence of a steady bifurcation at some $\lambda_s\ge \lambda_c$., Comment: Submitted for publication. Regularization techniques are necessary to compute meaningful solutions to discrete ill-posed inverse problems. The well-known 2-norm Tikhonov regularization method equipped with a discretization of the gradient operator as regularization operator penalizes large gradient components of the solution to overcome instabilities. However, this method is homogeneous, i.e., it does not take into account the orientation of the regularized solution and therefore tends to smooth the desired structures, textures and discontinuities, which often contain important information. If the local orientation field of the solution is known, a possible way to overcome this issue is to implement local anisotropic regularization by penalizing weighted directional derivatives. In this paper, considering problems that are inherently two-dimensional, we propose to automatically and simultaneously recover the regularized solution and the local orientation parameters (used to define the anisotropic regularization term) by solving a bilevel optimization problem. Specifically, the lower level problem is Tikhonov regularization equipped with local anisotropic regularization, while the objective function of the upper level problem encodes some natural assumptions about the local orientation parameters and the Tikhonov regularization parameter. Application of the proposed algorithm to a variety of inverse problems in imaging (such as denoising, deblurring, tomography and Dix inversion), with both real and synthetic data, shows its effectiveness and robustness.

We introduce a new measure for the stability of structures, such as the cross-section of the deck of a suspension bridge, subject to a 2D fluid force, such as the lift exerted by a laminar wind. We consider a wide class of possible flows, as well as a wide class of structural shapes. Within a suitable topological framework, we prove the existence of an optimal shape maximizing the stability. Applications to engineering problems are also discussed.

In this paper, we describe TRIPs-Py, a new Python package of linear discrete inverse problems solvers and test problems. The goal of the package is two-fold: 1) to provide tools for solving small and large-scale inverse problems, and 2) to introduce test problems arising from a wide range of applications. The solvers available in TRIPs-Py include direct regularization methods (such as truncated singular value decomposition and Tikhonov) and iterative regularization techniques (such as Krylov subspace methods and recent solvers for $\ell_p$-$\ell_q$ formulations, which enforce sparse or edge-preserving solutions and handle different noise types). All our solvers have built-in strategies to define the regularization parameter(s). Some of the test problems in TRIPs-Py arise from simulated image deblurring and computerized tomography, while other test problems model realistic problems in dynamic computerized tomography. Numerical examples are included to illustrate the usage as well as the performance of the described methods on the provided test problems. In this article, a biophysically realistic model of a soft octopus arm with internal musculature is presented. The modeling is motivated by experimental observations of sensorimotor control where an arm localizes and reaches a target. Major contributions of this article are: (i) development of models to capture the mechanical properties of arm musculature, the electrical properties of the arm peripheral nervous system (PNS), and the coupling of PNS with muscular contractions; (ii) modeling the arm sensory system, including chemosensing and proprioception; and (iii) algorithms for sensorimotor control, which include a novel feedback neural motor control law for mimicking target-oriented arm reaching motions, and a novel consensus algorithm for solving sensing problems such as locating a food source from local chemical sensory information (exogenous) and arm deformation information (endogenous). Several analytical results, including rest-state characterization and stability properties of the proposed sensing and motor control algorithms, are provided. Numerical simulations demonstrate the efficacy of our approach. Qualitative comparisons against observed arm rest shapes and target-oriented reaching motions are also reported.

Oscillatory flows have become an indispensable tool in microfluidics, inducing inertial effects for displacing and manipulating fluid-borne objects in a reliable, controllable, and label-free fashion. However, the quantitative description of such effects has been confined to limit cases and specialized scenarios. Here we develop an analytical formalism yielding the equation of motion of density-mismatched spherical particles in arbitrary background flows, generalizing previous work. Inertial force terms are systematically derived from the geometry of the flow field together with analytically known Stokes number dependences. Supported by independent, first-principles direct numerical simulations, we find that these forces are important even for nearly density-matched objects such as cells or bacteria, enabling their fast displacement and separation. Our formalism thus generalizes the Maxey--Riley equation, encompassing not only particle inertia, but consistently recovering, in the limit of large Stokes numbers, the Auton modification to added mass as well as the far-field acoustofluidic secondary radiation force.

Variational regularization is commonly used to solve linear inverse problems, and involves augmenting a data fidelity by a regularizer. The regularizer is used to promote a priori information and is weighted by a regularization parameter. Selection of an appropriate regularization parameter is critical, with various choices leading to very different reconstructions. Classical strategies used to determine a suitable parameter value include the discrepancy principle and the L-curve criterion, and in recent years a supervised machine learning approach called bilevel learning has been employed. Bilevel learning is a powerful framework to determine optimal parameters and involves solving a nested optimization problem. While previous strategies enjoy various theoretical results, the well-posedness of bilevel learning in this setting is still an open question. In particular, a necessary property is positivity of the determined regularization parameter. In this work, we provide a new condition that better characterizes positivity of optimal regularization parameters than the existing theory. Muscular hydrostats, such as octopus arms or elephant trunks, lack bones entirely, endowing them with exceptional dexterity and reconfigurability. Key to their unmatched ability to control nearly infinite degrees of freedom is the architecture into which muscle fibers are weaved. Their arrangement is, effectively, the instantiation of a sophisticated mechanical program that mediates, and likely facilitates, the control and realization of complex, dynamic morphological reconfigurations. Here, by combining medical imaging, biomechanical data, live behavioral experiments and numerical simulations, we synthesize a model octopus arm entailing ~200 continuous muscles groups, and begin to unravel its complexity. We show how 3D arm motions can be understood in terms of storage, transport, and conversion of topological quantities, effected by simple muscle activation templates. These, in turn, can be composed into higher-level control strategies that, compounded by the arm's compliance, are demonstrated in a range of object manipulation tasks rendered additionally challenging by the need to appropriately align suckers, to sense and grasp. Overall, our work exposes broad design and algorithmic principles pertinent to muscular hydrostats, robotics, and dynamics, while significantly advancing our ability to model muscular structures from medical imaging, with potential implications for human health and care., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Viscous streaming is an efficient rectification mechanism to exploit flow inertia at small scales for fluid and particle manipulation. It typically entails a fluid vibrating around an immersed solid feature that, by concentrating stresses, modulates the emergence of steady flows of useful topology. Motivated by its relevance in biological and artificial settings characterized by soft materials, recent studies have theoretically elucidated, in two dimensions, the impact of body elasticity on streaming flows. Here, we generalize those findings to three dimensions, via the minimal case of an immersed soft sphere. We first improve existing solutions for the rigid sphere limit, by considering previously unaccounted terms. We then enable body compliance, exposing a three-dimensional, elastic streaming process available even in Stokes flows. Such effect, consistent with two-dimensional analyses but analytically distinct, is validated against direct numerical simulations and shown to translate to bodies of complex geometry and topology, paving the way for advanced forms of flow control.

We study the equilibrium configurations of a possibly asymmetric fluid-structure-interaction problem. The fluid is confined in a bounded planar channel and is governed by the stationary Navier-Stokes equations with laminar inflow and outflow. A body is immersed in the channel and is subject to both the lift force from the fluid and to some external elastic force. Asymmetry, which is motivated by natural models, and the possibly non-vanishing velocity of the fluid on the boundary of the channel require the introduction of suitable assumptions to prevent collisions of the body with the boundary. With these assumptions at hand, we prove that for sufficiently small inflow/outflow there exists a unique equilibrium configuration. Only if the inflow, the outflow and the body are all symmetric, the configuration is also symmetric. A model application is also discussed.

Of the vast variety of animal gaits, one of the most striking is the non-planar undulating motion of a sidewinder. But non-planar gaits are not limited to sidewinders. Here we report a new non-planar mode used as an escape strategy in juvenile anacondas (Eunectes notaeus). In the S-start, named for its eponymous shape, transient locomotion arises when the snake writhes and bends out of the plane while rolling forward about its midsection without slippage. To quantify our observations, we present a mathematical model for an active non-planar filament that interacts anisotropically with a frictional substrate and show that locomotion is due to a propagating localized pulse of a topological quantity, the link density. A two-dimensional phase space characterized by scaled body weight and muscular torque shows that relatively light juveniles are capable of S-starts but heavy adults are not, consistent with our experiments. Finally, we show that a periodic sequence of S-starts naturally leads to a sidewinding gait. All together, our characterization of a novel escape strategy in snakes highlights the role of topology in locomotion, provides a phase diagram for mode feasibility as a function of body size, and suggests a role for the S-start in the evolution of sidewinding., Comment: Typos fixed and some new references added

The ANNRI-Gd collaboration studied in detail the single $\gamma$-ray spectrum produced from the thermal neutron capture on $^{155}$Gd and $^{157}$Gd in our previous publications. Gadolinium targets were exposed to a neutron beam provided by the Japan Spallation Neutron Source (JSNS) in J-PARC, Japan. In the present analysis, one new additional coaxial germanium crystal was used in the analysis in combination with the fourteen germanium crystals in the cluster detectors to study the angular correlation of the two $\gamma$ rays emitted in the same neutron capture. We present for the first time angular correlation functions for two $\gamma$ rays produced during the electromagnetic cascade transitions in the (n, $\gamma$) reactions on $^{\rm 155}$Gd and $^{\rm 157}$Gd. As expected, we observe the mild angular correlations for the strong, but rare transitions from the resonance state to the two energy levels of known spin-parities. Contrariwise, we observe negligibly small angular correlations for arbitrary pairs of two $\gamma$ rays produced in the majority of cascade transitions from the resonance state to the dense continuum states., Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures

Inspired by the unique neurophysiology of the octopus, we propose a hierarchical framework that simplifies the coordination of multiple soft arms by decomposing control into high-level decision making, low-level motor activation, and local reflexive behaviors via sensory feedback. When evaluated in the illustrative problem of a model octopus foraging for food, this hierarchical decomposition results in significant improvements relative to end-to-end methods. Performance is achieved through a mixed-modes approach, whereby qualitatively different tasks are addressed via complementary control schemes. Here, model-free reinforcement learning is employed for high-level decision-making, while model-based energy shaping takes care of arm-level motor execution. To render the pairing computationally tenable, a novel neural-network energy shaping (NN-ES) controller is developed, achieving accurate motions with time-to-solutions 200 times faster than previous attempts. Our hierarchical framework is then successfully deployed in increasingly challenging foraging scenarios, including an arena littered with obstacles in 3D space, demonstrating the viability of our approach., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) is a standard algorithm in seismic imaging. Its implementation requires the a priori choice of a number of "design parameters", such as the positions of sensors for the actual measurements and one (or more) regularisation weights. In this paper we describe a novel algorithm for determining these design parameters automatically from a set of training images, using a (supervised) bilevel learning approach. In our algorithm, the upper level objective function measures the quality of the reconstructions of the training images, where the reconstructions are obtained by solving the lower level optimisation problem -- in this case FWI. Our algorithm employs (variants of) the BFGS quasi-Newton method to perform the optimisation at each level, and thus requires the repeated solution of the forward problem -- here taken to be the Helmholtz equation. This paper focuses on the implementation of the algorithm. The novel contributions are: (i) an adjoint-state method for the efficient computation of the upper-level gradient; (ii) a complexity analysis for the bilevel algorithm, which counts the number of Helmholtz solves needed and shows this number is independent of the number of design parameters optimised; (iii) an effective preconditioning strategy for iteratively solving the linear systems required at each step of the bilevel algorithm; (iv) a smoothed extraction process for point values of the discretised wavefield, necessary for ensuring a smooth upper level objective function. The algorithm also uses an extension to the bilevel setting of classical frequency-continuation strategies, helping avoid convergence to spurious stationary points. The advantage of our algorithm is demonstrated on a problem derived from the standard Marmousi test problem.

This paper presents a couple of preconditioning techniques that can be used to enhance the performance of iterative regularization methods applied to image deblurring problems with a variety of point spread functions (PSFs) and boundary conditions. More precisely, we first consider the anti-identity preconditioner, which symmetrizes the coefficient matrix associated to problems with zero boundary conditions, allowing the use of MINRES as a regularization method. When considering more sophisticated boundary conditions and strongly nonsymmetric PSFs, the anti-identity preconditioner improves the performance of GMRES. We then consider both stationary and iteration-dependent regularizing circulant preconditioners that, applied in connection with the anti-identity matrix and both standard and flexible Krylov subspaces, speed up the iterations. A theoretical result about the clustering of the eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrices is proved in a special case. The results of many numerical experiments are reported to show the effectiveness of the new preconditioning techniques, including when considering the deblurring of sparse images.

The octopus arm is a neuromechanical system that involves a complex interplay between peripheral nervous system (PNS) and arm musculature. This makes the arm capable of carrying out rich maneuvers. In this paper, we build a model for the PNS and integrate it with a muscular soft octopus arm. The proposed neuromuscular architecture is used to qualitatively reproduce several biophysical observations in real octopuses, including curled rest shapes and target-directed arm reaching motions. Two control laws are proposed for target-oriented arm motions, and their performance is compared against a benchmark. Several analytical results, including rest-state characterization and stability properties of the proposed control laws, are provided.

Small - but finite - fluid inertia can be leveraged to generate steady flows out of liquid vibrations around an immersed interface. In engineering, external high-frequency drivers (10$^2$-10$^5$ Hz) allow this inertial rectification phenomenon, known as viscous streaming, to be employed in micron-scale devices for precise flow control, particle manipulation and spatially controlled chemistry. However, beyond artificial settings, streaming may also be accessed by larger-scale biological systems pertaining to lower frequencies. Then, millimeter-size bacteria or larvae that oscillate cilia and appendages in the 1-10Hz range may be able to endogenously rectify surrounding flows, for feeding or locomotion, removing the need for external actuators, tethers or tubings. In support of this hypothesis, here we demonstrate an in vitro living system able to produce streaming flows, endogenously, autonomously and unassisted. Computationally informed, our biological device generates oscillatory flows through the cyclic contractions of an engineered muscle tissue, shaped in the form of a ring and suspended in fluid within a Micro-Particle Image Velocimetry setup, for analysis. Flow patterns consistent with streaming simulations are observed for low-frequency muscle contractions (2-4Hz), either spontaneous or light-induced, illustrating system autonomy and controllability, respectively. Thus, this work provides experimental evidence of biologically powered streaming in untethered millimeter-scale living systems, showcasing the utility of bio-hybrid technology for fundamental and applied fluid mechanics.

In 2021, the Coordinated Science Laboratory CSL, an Interdisciplinary Research Unit at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, hosted the Future of Computing Symposium to celebrate its 70th anniversary. CSL's research covers the full computing stack, computing's impact on society and the resulting need for social responsibility. In this white paper, we summarize the major technological points, insights, and directions that speakers brought forward during the Future of Computing Symposium. Participants discussed topics related to new computing paradigms, technologies, algorithms, behaviors, and research challenges to be expected in the future. The symposium focused on new computing paradigms that are going beyond traditional computing and the research needed to support their realization. These needs included stressing security and privacy, the end to end human cyber physical systems and with them the analysis of the end to end artificial intelligence needs. Furthermore, advances that enable immersive environments for users, the boundaries between humans and machines will blur and become seamless. Particular integration challenges were made clear in the final discussion on the integration of autonomous driving, robo taxis, pedestrians, and future cities. Innovative approaches were outlined to motivate the next generation of researchers to work on these challenges. The discussion brought out the importance of considering not just individual research areas, but innovations at the intersections between computing research efforts and relevant application domains, such as health care, transportation, energy systems, and manufacturing.

Flexible octopus arms exhibit an exceptional ability to coordinate large numbers of degrees of freedom and perform complex manipulation tasks. As a consequence, these systems continue to attract the attention of biologists and roboticists alike. In this paper, we develop a three-dimensional model of a soft octopus arm, equipped with biomechanically realistic muscle actuation. Internal forces and couples exerted by all major muscle groups are considered. An energy shaping control method is described to coordinate muscle activity so as to grasp and reach in 3D space. Key contributions of this paper are: (i) modeling of major muscle groups to elicit three-dimensional movements; (ii) a mathematical formulation for muscle activations based on a stored energy function; and (iii) a computationally efficient procedure to design task-specific equilibrium configurations, obtained by solving an optimization problem in the Special Euclidean group SE(3). Muscle controls are then iteratively computed based on the co-state variable arising from the solution of the optimization problem. The approach is numerically demonstrated in the physically accurate software environment Elastica. Results of numerical experiments mimicking observed octopus behaviors are reported.

Combinations of spectroscopic analysis and microscopic techniques are used across many disciplines of scientific research, including material science, chemistry and biology. X-ray spectromicroscopy, in particular, is a powerful tool used for studying chemical state distributions at the micro and nano scales. With the beam fixed, a specimen is typically rastered through the probe with continuous motion and a range of multimodal data is collected at fixed time intervals. The application of this technique is limited in some areas due to: long scanning times to collect the data, either because of the area/volume under study or the compositional properties of the specimen; and material degradation due to the dose absorbed during the measurement. In this work, we propose a novel approach for reducing the dose and scanning times by undersampling the raster data. This is achieved by skipping rows within scans and reconstructing the x-ray spectromicroscopic measurements using low-rank matrix completion. The new method is robust and allows for x 5-6 reduction in sampling. Experimental results obtained on real data are illustrated., Comment: 22 pages,11 figures

This paper considers large-scale linear ill-posed inverse problems whose solutions can be represented as sums of smooth and piecewise constant components. To solve such problems we consider regularizers consisting of two terms that must be balanced. Namely, a Tikhonov term guarantees the smoothness of the smooth solution component, while a total-variation (TV) regularizer promotes blockiness of the non-smooth solution component. A scalar parameter allows to balance between these two terms and, hence, to appropriately separate and regularize the smooth and non-smooth components of the solution. This paper proposes an efficient algorithm to solve this regularization problem by the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). Furthermore, a novel algorithm for automatic choice of the balancing parameter is introduced, using robust statistics. The proposed approach is supported by some theoretical analysis, and numerical experiments concerned with different inverse problems are presented to validate the choice of the balancing parameter.

The main contribution of this paper is a novel sensory feedback control law for an octopus arm. The control law is inspired by, and helps integrate, several observations made by biologists. The proposed control law is distinct from prior work which has mainly focused on open-loop control strategies. Several analytical results are described including characterization of the equilibrium and its stability analysis. Numerical simulations demonstrate life-like motion of the soft octopus arm, qualitatively matching behavioral experiments. Quantitative comparison with bend propagation experiments helps provide the first explanation of such canonical motion using a sensory feedback control law. Several remarks are included that help draw parallels with natural pursuit strategies such as motion camouflage or classical pursuit.
