After steep drops and then rebounds in transportation-related CO$_2$ emissions over the first half of 2020, a second wave of COVID-19 this fall has caused further -- but less substantial -- emissions reductions. Abstract

As an important symbol of civilization and culture, architectures originally were built for sheltering human beings from weather disasters and therefore should be affected by climate change, particularly the associated change in the occurrence of extreme weather events. However, although meteorology has been considered as a factor in modern architecture design, it remains unclear whether and how the ancients adapted to climate change from the perspective of architecture design, particularly on a millennium time scale. Here we show that the periodic change and trend of the roof slope of ancient architectures in northern China clearly demonstrate the climate change adaptation over the past thousand years. We show that the snowfall fluctuation caused by the paleo-climate change was an essential driving factor within the roof modification process of ancient Chinese timber architecture. 22. The sponge effect and carbon emission mitigation potentials of the global cement cycle.

Abstract

Cement plays a dual role in the global carbon cycle like a sponge: its massive production contributes significantly to present-day global anthropogenic CO2 emissions, yet its hydrated products gradually reabsorb substantial amounts of atmospheric CO2 (carbonation) in the future. The role of this sponge effect along the cement cycle (including production, use, and demolition) in carbon emissions mitigation, however, remains hitherto unexplored. Here, we quantify the effects of demand- and supply-side mitigation measures considering this material-energy-emissions-uptake nexus, finding that climate goals would be imperiled if the growth of cement stocks continues. Future reabsorption of CO2 will be significant (~30% of cumulative CO2 emissions from 2015 to 2100), but climate goal compliant net CO2 emissions reduction along the global cement cycle will require both radical technology advancements (e.g., carbon capture and storage) and widespread deployment of material efficiency measures, which go beyond those envisaged in current technology roadmaps.

39. Generating Urban Road Networks with Conditional Diffusion Models.

Abstract

The auto-generation of urban roads can greatly improve efficiency and productivity in urban planning and designing. However, it has also raised concerns amongst researchers over the past decade. In this paper, we present an image-based urban road network generation framework using conditional diffusion models. We first trained a diffusion model capable of generating road images with similar characteristics to the ground truth using four context factors. Then, we used the trained model as the generator to synthesize road images conditioned in a geospatial context. Finally, we converted the generated road images into road networks with several post-processes. The experiments conducted in five cities of the United States showed that our model can generate reasonable road networks, maintaining the layouts and styles of real examples. Moreover, our model has the ability to show the obstructive effect of geographic barriers on urban roads. By comparing models with different context factors as input, we find that the model that considers all four factors generally performs the best. The most important factor in guiding the shape of road networks is intersections, implying that the development of urban roads is not only restricted by the natural environment but is more strongly influenced by human design.
