Abstract Grain boundary hardening and precipitation hardening are important mechanisms for enhancing the strength of metals. Here, we show that these two effects can be amplified simultaneously in nanocrystalline compositionally complex alloys (CCAs), leading to near-theoretical strength and large deformability. We develop a model nanograined (TiZrNbHf)98Ni2 alloy via thermodynamic design. The Ni solutes, which has a large negative mixing enthalpy and different electronegativity to Ti, Zr, Nb and Hf, not only produce Ni-enriched local chemical inhomogeneities in the nanograins, but also segregate to grain boundaries. The resultant alloy achieves a 2.5 GPa yield strength, together with work hardening capability and large homogeneous deformability to 65% compressive strain. The local chemical inhomogeneities impede dislocation propagation and encourage dislocation multiplication to promote strain hardening. Meanwhile, Ni segregates to grain boundaries and enhances cohesion, suppressing the grain growth and grain boundary cracking found while deforming the reference TiZrNbHf alloy. Our alloy design strategy thus opens an avenue, via solute decoration at grain boundaries combined with local chemical inhomogeneities inside the grains, towards ultrahigh strength and large plasticity in nanostructured alloys.

Abstract Disruption of the alveolar barrier can trigger acute lung injury. This study elucidated the association of methyltransferase‐like 3 (METTL3) with Streptococcus pneumoniae (SP)‐induced apoptosis and inflammatory injury of alveolar epithelial cells (AECs). AECs were cultured and then infected with SP. Furthermore, the expression of METTL3, interleukin (IL)‐10, IL‐6, tumor necrosis factor‐alpha (TNF‐α), monocyte chemoattractant protein‐1 (MCP‐1), long noncoding RNA nuclear paraspeckle assembly transcript 1 (NEAT1), mucin 19 (MUC19), N6‐methyladenosine (m6A), and NEAT1 after m6A modification were detected by qRT‐PCR, Western blot, and enzyme‐linked immunosorbent, m6A quantification, and methylated RNA immunoprecipitation‐qPCR analyses, respectively. Moreover, the subcellular localization of NEAT1 was analyzed by nuclear/cytosol fractionation assay, and the binding between NEAT1 and CCCTC‐binding factor (CTCF) was also analyzed. The results of this investigation revealed that SP‐induced apoptosis and inflammatory injury in AECs and upregulated METTL3 expression. In addition, the downregulation of METTL3 alleviated apoptosis and inflammatory injury in AECs. METTL3‐mediated m6A modification increased NEAT1 and promoted its binding with CTCF to facilitate MUC19 transcription. NEAT1 or MUC19 overexpression disrupted their protective role of silencing METTL3 in AECs, thereby increasing apoptosis and inflammatory injury. In conclusion, this is the first study to suggest that METTL3 aggravates SP‐induced cell damage via the NEAT1/CTCF/MUC19 axis.

This study aimed to identify biomarkers for chronic kidney disease (CKD) by studying serum metabolomics. Serum samples were collected from 194 non-dialysis CKD patients and 317 healthy controls (HC). Using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS), untargeted metabolomics analysis was conducted. A random forest model was developed and validated in separate sets of HC and CKD patients. The serum metabolomic profiles of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) exhibited significant differences compared to healthy controls (HC). A total of 314 metabolites were identified as significantly different, with 179 being upregulated and 135 being downregulated in CKD patients. KEGG enrichment analysis revealed several key pathways, including arginine biosynthesis, phenylalanine metabolism, linoleic acid metabolism, and purine metabolism. The diagnostic efficacy of the classifier was high, with an area under the curve of 1 in the training and validation sets and 0.9435 in the cross-validation set. This study provides comprehensive insights into serum metabolism in non-dialysis CKD patients, highlighting the potential involvement of abnormal biological metabolism in CKD pathogenesis. Exploring metabolites may offer new possibilities for the management of CKD.

Pathogenic missense mutation of the FGF12 gene is responsible for a variable disease phenotypic spectrum. Disease-specific therapies require precise dissection of the relationship between different mutations and phenotypes. The lack of a proper animal model hinders the investigation of related diseases, such as early-onset epileptic encephalopathy. Here, an FGF12AV52H mouse model was generated using CRISPR/Cas9 technology, which altered the A isoform without affecting the B isoform. The FGF12AV52H mice exhibited seizure susceptibility, while no spontaneous seizures were observed. The increased excitability in dorsal hippocampal CA3 neurons was confirmed by patch-clamp recordings. Furthermore, immunostaining showed that the balance of excitatory/inhibitory neurons in the hippocampus of the FGF12AV52H mice was perturbed. The increases in inhibitory SOM+ neurons and excitatory CaMKII+ neurons were heterogeneous. Moreover, the locomotion, anxiety levels, risk assessment behavior, social behavior, and cognition of the FGF12AV52H mice were investigated by elevated plus maze, open field, three-chamber sociability, and novel object tests, respectively. Cognition deficit, impaired risk assessment, and social behavior with normal social indexes were observed, implying complex consequences of V52H FGF12A in mice. Together, these data suggest that the function of FGF12A in neurons can be immediate or long-term and involves modulation of ion channels and the differentiation and maturation of neurons. The FGF12AV52H mouse model increases the understanding of the function of FGF12A, and it is of great importance for revealing the complex network of the FGF12 gene in physiological and pathological processes.

Abstract Background Globally increasing atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition has altered soil phosphorus (P) transformations and availability, and thereby influenced structure and function of terrestrial ecosystems. Edaphic characteristics and chemical form of deposited N could be important factors determining impacts of N deposition on soil P transformations, yet the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. Objectives of this study were to examine how mineral-N and amino N differently affect P fractions, and identify key soil properties determining N addition impacts on soil P transformations. Considering that amino N is an important component of deposited N and forest soils vary greatly in different regions, the results of present study can guide the management of forests across different soils under ongoing N deposition scenarios. Methods We conducted a 60-day laboratory experiment to investigate the effects of N addition (NH4NO3 and glycine) on soil P fractions and related biochemical properties in four representative forest soils (brown, yellow brown, aeolian sandy, and red soils) in China. Glycine and NH4NO3 were separately added at three rates (5, 10 and 20 g N m–2 yr–1). Results Firstly, the percent changes in organic P fractions with N addition were significantly greater than changes in inorganic P fractions across all soils. Secondly, the percent changes in P fractions with glycine and NH4NO3 additions were significantly correlated across all soils and treatments. However, glycine addition had significantly greater impacts on organic P fractions than NH4NO3 addition in the aeolian sandy and red soils with low organic carbon content. Thirdly, P fractions responded differently to N addition among the four soils. N-induced changes in microbial biomass and phosphatase activities, pH, exchangeable Ca2+ and Mg2+ contributed differently to the changes in P fractions with N addition in the four soils. Conclusions The different responses of P fractions to N addition in the four soils were mainly generated by the differences in extent of microbial N limitation, acid buffering capacity, and cation exchange capacity among the soils. The different impacts of mineral and amino N on soil P fractions can be ascribed to their divergent effects on soil pH, microbial biomass and activities.

Abstract Temporal solitons have been the focus of much research due to their fascinating physical properties. These solitons can form bound states, which are fundamentally crucial modes in fiber laser and present striking analogies with their matter molecules counterparts, which means they have potential applications in large-capacity transmission and all-optical information storage. Although traditionally, second-order dispersion has been the dominant dispersion for conventional solitons, recent experimental and theoretical research has shown that pure-high-even-order dispersion (PHEOD) solitons with energy-width scaling can arise from the interaction of arbitrary negative-even-order dispersion and Kerr nonlinearity. Despite these advancements, research on the bound states of PHEOD solitons is currently non-existent. In this study, we obtained PHEOD bound solitons in a fiber laser using an intra-cavity spectral pulse shaper for high-order dispersion management. Specifically, we experimentally demonstrate the existence of PHEOD solitons and PHEOD bound solitons with pure-quartic, -sextic, -octic, and -decic dispersion. Numerical simulations corroborate these experimental observations. Furthermore, vibrating phase PHEOD bound soliton pairs, sliding phase PHEOD bound soliton pairs, and hybrid phase PHEOD bound tri-soliton are discovered and characterized. These results broaden the fundamental understanding of solitons and show the universality of multi-soliton patterns.

Abstract The transformation induced plasticity phenomenon occurs when one phase transforms to another one during plastic deformation, which is usually diffusionless. Here we present elemental partitioning-mediated crystalline-to-amorphous phase transformation during quasi-static plastic deformation, in an alloy in form of a Cr-Ni-Co (crystalline)/Zr-Ti-Nb-Hf-Ni-Co (amorphous) nanolaminated composite, where the constitute elements of the two phases have large negative mixing enthalpy. Upon plastic deformation, atomic intermixing occurs between adjacent amorphous and crystalline phases due to extensive rearrangement of atoms at the interfaces. The large negative mixing enthalpy among the constituent elements promotes amorphous phase transformation of the original crystalline phase, which shows different composition and short-range-order structure compared with the other amorphous phase. The reduced size of the crystalline phase shortens mean-free-path of dislocations, facilitating strain hardening. The enthalpy-guided alloy design based on crystalline-to-amorphous phase transformation opens up an avenue for the development of crystal-glass composite alloys with ultrahigh strength and large plasticity.

It is practically difficult to find titanium sponges with low and stable aluminum impurities on the market even though it is the precondition to prepare high-purity titanium. Analysis indicates that almost all the aluminum impurities in the titanium sponge are inherited from the magnesium used to reduce titanium tetrachloride. However, it remains elusive for decades why magnesium produced through the silicothermic reduction method contains a high content of aluminum impurities with large fluctuations. By recourse to thermodynamic calculations and comparative experiments, we demonstrate that fluorite, a material used as a catalyst in the silicothermic reduction method to produce magnesium, is the chief culprit for the pest aluminum and propose a mechanism to rationalize the observed phenomena. Our findings indicate that one practical way to produce qualified magnesium for the production of high-purity titanium is to abandon fluorite during the production of magnesium with the silicothermic reduction method.

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a class of bioactive fatty acids that exhibit various physiological activities such as anti-cancer, anti-atherosclerosis, and lipid-lowering. It is an essential fatty acid that cannot be synthesized by the human body and must be derived from dietary sources. The natural sources of CLA are limited, predominantly relying on chemical and enzymatic syntheses methods. Microbial biosynthesis represents an environmentally benign approach for CLA production. Pine nut oil, containing 40–60% linoleic acid, serves as a promising substrate for CLA enrichment. In the present study, we developed a novel method for the production of CLA from pine nut oil using Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) Lp-01, which harbors a linoleic acid isomerase. The optimal fermentation parameters for CLA production were determined using a combination of single-factor and response surface methodologies: an inoculum size of 2%, a fermentation temperature of 36 °C, a fermentation time of 20 h, and a pine nut oil concentration of 11%. Under these optimized conditions, the resultant CLA yield was 33.47 μg/mL. Gas chromatography analysis revealed that the fermentation process yielded a mixture of c9, t11CLA and t10, c12 CLA isomers, representing 4.91% and 4.86% of the total fatty acid content, respectively.

The oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel), is a devastating pest of citrus fruits. After successful mating, adult females insert their eggs into the ripened fruit, resulting in moldy and rotten fruit and causing great economic losses for the citrus industry. In the field, flies initiate copulatory behaviors as twilight approaches, and decreasing light intensity in this period is the normal stimulus for copulation. In this study, ten light intensities ranging from 0–30 000 lux were set to identify the typical intensity that strongly regulates the copulation behavior of B. dorsalis. Three light intensities found to regulate the copulation behavior were then selected to verify their effects on adult male wing fanning and female chemotaxis towards 2,3,5-trimethylpyrazine (TMP). At last, strong light and complete darkness were artificially combined in the lab to verify whether they could prevent copulation to inform behavioral manipulation of oriental flies in the future. Avian infectious bronchitis is an acute respiratory disease of poultry of particular concern for global food security. Investigation of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), the causative agent of avian infectious bronchitis, via reverse genetics enables deeper understanding of virus biology and a rapid response to emerging variants. Classic methods of reverse genetics for IBV can be time consuming, rely on recombination for the introduction of mutations, and, depending on the system, can be subject to genome instability and unreliable success rates. In this study, we have applied data-optimized Golden Gate Assembly design to create a rapidly executable, flexible, and faithful reverse genetics system for IBV. The IBV genome was divided into 12 fragments at high-fidelity fusion site breakpoints. All fragments were synthetically produced and propagated in E. coli plasmids, amenable to standard molecular biology techniques for DNA manipulation. The assembly can be carried out in a single reaction, with the products used directly in subsequent viral rescue steps. We demonstrate the use of this system for generation of point mutants and gene replacements. This Golden Gate Assembly-based reverse genetics system will enable rapid response to emerging variants of IBV, particularly important to vaccine development for controlling spread within poultry populations.

Abstract To alleviate the mechanical instability of major shear bands in metallic glasses at room temperature, topologically heterogeneous structures were introduced to encourage the multiplication of mild shear bands. Different from the former attention on topological structures, here we present a compositional design approach to build nanoscale chemical heterogeneity to enhance homogeneous plastic flow upon both compression and tension. The idea is realized in a Ti-Zr-Nb-Si-XX/Mg-Zn-Ca-YY hierarchically nanodomained amorphous alloy, where XX and YY denote other elements. The alloy shows ~2% elastic strain and undergoes highly homogeneous plastic flow of ~40% strain (with strain hardening) in compression, surpassing those of mono- and hetero-structured metallic glasses. Furthermore, dynamic atomic intermixing occurs between the nanodomains during plastic flow, preventing possible interface failure. Our design of chemically distinct nanodomains and the dynamic atomic intermixing at the interface opens up an avenue for the development of amorphous materials with ultrahigh strength and large plasticity.

The yield of wheat in wheat–rice rotation cropping systems in the Yangtze River Plain, China, is adversely impacted by waterlogging. A raised bed planting (RBP) pattern may reduce waterlogging and increase the wheat yield after rice cultivation by improving the grain number per spike. However, the physiological basis for grain formation under RBP conditions remains poorly understood. The present study was performed over two growing seasons (2018/2019 and 2019/2020) to examine the effects of the planting pattern (i.e., RBP and flat planting (FP)) on the floret and grain formation features and leaf photosynthetic source characteristics of wheat. The results indicated that implementation of the RBP pattern improved the soil–plant nitrogen (N) supply during floret development, which facilitated balanced floret development, resulting in a 9.5% increase in the number of fertile florets per spike. Moreover, the RBP pattern delayed wheat leaf senescence and increased the photosynthetic source capacity by 13.9%, which produced more assimilates for grain filling. Delayed leaf senescence was attributed to the resultant high leaf N content and enhanced antioxidant metabolism. Correspondingly, under RBP conditions, 7.6–8.6% more grains per spike were recorded, and the grain yield was ultimately enhanced by 10.4–12.7%. These results demonstrate that the improvement of the spike differentiation process and the enhancement of the leaf photosynthetic capacity were the main reasons for the increased grain number per spike of wheat under the RBP pattern, and additional improvements in this technique should be achievable through further investigation.

Wheat is the main component for producing the flavor liquor Daqu. It is essential to meet the raw material quality requirements for high-quality Daqu to breed special wheat varieties and simultaneously develop the supporting cultivation practices. From 2018 to 2020, a field experiment involving four representative wheat cultivars (Chuanmai 104, Mianmai 367, Xikemai 8, and Shumai 1671) and six nitrogen application rates (0, 45, 90, 135, 180, and 225 kg/hm2) in four different agro-ecological sites (Guanghan, Zitong, and Xichang in Sichuan Province, and Nanzhang in Hubei Province) in the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River basin was conducted. This study evaluated the main quality parameters of wheat raw materials and the quality of the flavor liquor Daqu. Abstract Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common primary malignant bone tumor with high metastatic potential and relapse risk. To study the regulatory mechanism of the OS microenvironment, a complex regulatory network involving the ferroptosis- and immune response-related genes remains to be established. In the present study, we determined the effect of a comprehensive evaluation system established on the basis of ferroptosis- and immune-related genes on the immune status, related biomarkers, prognosis, and the potential regulatory networks underlying OS based on the TARGET and Gene Expression Omnibus databases that contain information on OS patients by bioinformatics analyses. We first characterized individual ferroptosis scores and immune scores through gene set variation analysis (GSVA) against TARGET-OS datasets. We then identified differentially expressed genes by score groups. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis was performed to identify the most relevant ferroptosis-related and immune-related gene modules, which facilitated the identification of 327 ferroptosis gene and 306 immune gene candidates. A 4-gene (WAS, CORT, WNT16, and GLB1L2) signature was constructed and valuation using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator-Cox regression models to effectively predict OS prognosis. The prediction efficiency was further validated by GSE39055. We stratified patients based on the prognostic scoring systems. Eight hub genes (namely CD3D, CD8A, CD3E, IL2, CD2, MYH6, MYH7, and MYL2) were identified, and TF–miRNA target regulatory networks were constructed. Furthermore, Gene Ontology, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes, gene set enrichment analysis, and GSVA were used to determine the signature’s potential pathways and biological functions, which showed that the hub genes were enriched in ferroptosis-associated biological functions and immune-associated molecular mechanisms. Thereafter, we investigated the proportion and infiltration extent of 22 infiltrating immune cells by using CIBERSORT, which revealed significant subgroup differences in CD8 + T cells, M0 macrophages, and M2 macrophages. In conclusion, we determined a new ferroptosis-related and immune-related gene signature for predicting OS patients’ prognosis and further explored the ferroptosis and immunity interactions during OS development, which provides insights into the exploration of molecular mechanisms and targeted therapies in patients with OS.

Microglia are resident immune cells in the central nervous system. During the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease, stimulatory factors continuously act on the microglia causing abnormal activation and unbalanced phenotypic changes; these events have become a significant and promising area of research. In this review, we summarize the effects of microglial polarization and crosstalk with other cells in the central nervous system in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Our literature search found that phenotypic changes occur continuously in Alzheimer’s disease and that microglia exhibit extensive crosstalk with astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, neurons, and penetrated peripheral innate immune cells via specific signaling pathways and cytokines. Collectively, unlike previous efforts to modulate microglial phenotypes at a single level, targeting the phenotypes of microglia and the crosstalk with other cells in the central nervous system may be more effective in reducing inflammation in the central nervous system in Alzheimer’s disease. This would establish a theoretical basis for reducing neuronal death from central nervous system inflammation and provide an appropriate environment to promote neuronal regeneration in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.

Cloud storage has the advantages of high efficiency and scalability.Users can save local storage cost and share data with others through cloud storage technology.However, when data is uploaded to cloud servers, its owner also loses the physical control, and hence there needs a corresponding mechanism to ensure the integrity of data stored in the cloud.The Provable Data Possession (PDP) mechanism allows users or a Third-Party Auditor (TPA) appointed by the user to verify data integrity.In practice, data is usually maintained by multiple users.Users may reveal their identities while making an integrity verification request in traditional auditing processes.Anonymous cloud auditing ensures anonymity of users against the TPA during auditing.Currently, in identity-based systems, anonymous cloud auditing schemes usually resort to identity-based ring signature or group signature schemes.As a result, the size of a tag is related to the number of users, which makes it not compact and causes high storage cost.In order to solve this issue, a general construction of identity-based anonymous cloud auditing scheme was proposed.With a signature scheme and an anonymous cloud auditing scheme, a concrete identity-based anonymous cloud auditing scheme based on the general construction was proposed.It combined theBLS signature and an anonymous cloud auditing scheme with compact tags.The main advantage of this solution is that the tags are compact, which can significantly reduce storage cost and improve storage efficiency.Furthermore, the uncheatability and anonymity of the scheme are proved.

Abstract Various studies showed that the effect of immune activation is pro-atherogenic and coronary heart disease (CHD) should therefore be considered an autoimmune disease. This study aimed to identify potential immune-related biomarkers, pathways, and the potential regulatory networks underlying CHD. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between CHD and control samples were determined by analyzing GSE71226 and GSE9128. The overlapping differential expression immune-related genes (DE-IRGs) for CHD were identified by analyzing the ImmPort database and two GEO databases. A total of 384 DE-IRGs were identified. Subsequently, comprehensive enrichment analyses suggested that DE-IRGs were enriched in immune-related pathways, including autoimmune thyroid disease, the intestinal immune network for IGA production, and downstream signaling events of B cell receptors. The signature of DE-IRGs was validated using an external independent dataset GSE20681 (AUC = 0.875). Furthermore, we conducted protein–protein interaction network analysis and identified eight hub genes, which were most enriched in regulation of defense response, NF-κB signaling pathway, regulation of JNK cascade, and regulation of cytokine production. Moreover, networks of miRNAs-mRNAs and transcription factors (TFs)-mRNA underlying the integrated data were established, involving eight miRNAs and 76 TF-targeting hub genes. Ultimately, 17 SNPs in miRNA-mediated gene networks were identified. We screened potential immune-related genes in CHD and constructed miRNA-mRNA-TF and SNP-miRNA networks, which not only provide inspired insights into the occurrence and the molecular mechanisms of CHD but also lay a foundation for targeting potential biomarkers using immunotherapy and for understanding the molecular mechanisms of CHD.

IntroductionAnti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis is a common autoimmune encephalitis, and it is associated with psychosis, dyskinesia, and seizures. Anti-NMDAR encephalitis (NMDARE) in juveniles and adults presents different clinical charactreistics. However, the pathogenesis of juvenile anti-NMDAR encephalitis remains unclear, partly because of a lack of suitable animal models.MethodsWe developed a model of juvenile anti-NMDAR encephalitis using active immunization with an amino terminal domain peptide from the GluN1 subunit (GluN1356 − 385) against NMDARs in 3-week-old female C57BL/6J mice.ResultsImmunofluorescence staining suggested that autoantibody levels in the hippocampus increased, and HEK-293T cells staining identified the target of the autoantibodies as GluN1, suggesting that GluN1-specific immunoglobulin G was successfully induced. Behavior assessment showed that the mice suffered significant cognition impairment and sociability reduction, which is similar to what is observed in patients affected by anti-NMDAR encephalitis. The mice also exhibited impaired long-term potentiation in hippocampal CA1. Pilocarpine-induced epilepsy was more severe and had a longer duration, while no spontaneous seizures were observed.ConclusionThe juvenile mouse model for anti-NMDAR encephalitis is of great importance to investigate the pathological mechanism and therapeutic strategies for the disease, and could accelerate the study of autoimmune encephalitis.

Abstract Thermal stability determines a material's ability to maintain its performance at desired service temperatures. This is especially important for aluminum (Al) alloys, which are widely used in the commercial sector. Herein, an ultra‐strong and heat‐resistant Al‐Cu composite is fabricated with a structure of nano‐AlN and submicron‐Al2O3 particles uniformly distributed in the matrix. At 350 °C, the (8.2AlN+1Al2O3)p/Al‐0.9Cu composite achieves a high strength of 187 MPa along with a 4.6% ductility under tension. The high strength and good ductility benefit from strong pinning effect on dislocation motion and grain boundary sliding by uniform dispersion of nano‐AlN particles, in conjunction with the precipitation of Guinier–Preston (GP) zones, enhancing strain hardening capacity during plastic deformation. This work can expand the selection of Al–Cu composites for potential applications at service temperatures as high as ≈350 °C.

Schistosomiasis, which is caused by the schistosome worm, poses significant health challenges. Understanding the sexual development and maturation of schistosomes would provide valuable insight for preventing the transmission of schistosomiasis and pathologic damage to the host. Isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ)-based proteomics was performed to monitor the dynamic proteomic profiles in Schistosoma japonicum during development from pairing-to-maturation. RNA interference (RNAi) experiments were used to elucidate sex-biased gene function. Of the 2927 identified proteins, 58.6% showed differential expression after comparing sexes and developmental stages. Both male and female worms displayed a similar number of gender-differentially expressed proteins after pairing. However, these proteins exhibited significant gender-specific functions, with reproduction central in females, while males were enriched in metabolic processes. Females exhibited 73% of their time-variant protein expression during 22-26 days post-infection (dpi), while males had 62% during 18-22 dpi, indicating earlier maturation in males. Functional analysis revealed different peptidases expressed during male and female development and maturation. Sex-biased Sj U2AF exhaustion led to worm development delay, abnormal reproductive organ development, and death. Comparative proteomics enhances our understanding of mechanisms underlying schistosome maturation and reveals a new potential target for chemotherapy and vaccines.

Ultrasound elastography (USE) provides complementary information of tissue stiffness and elasticity to conventional ultrasound imaging. It is noninvasive and free of radiation, and has become a valuable tool to improve diagnostic performance with conventional ultrasound imaging. However, the diagnostic accuracy will be reduced due to high operator-dependence and intra- and inter-observer variability in visual observations of radiologists. Artificial intelligence (AI) has great potential to perform automatic medical image analysis tasks to provide a more objective, accurate and intelligent diagnosis. More recently, the enhanced diagnostic performance of AI applied to USE have been demonstrated for various disease evaluations. This review provides an overview of the basic concepts of USE and AI techniques for clinical radiologists and then introduces the applications of AI in USE imaging that focus on the following anatomical sites: liver, breast, thyroid and other organs for lesion detection and segmentation, machine learning (ML) - assisted classification and prognosis prediction. In addition, the existing challenges and future trends of AI in USE are also discussed.

Biomass energy is one of the important and feasible renewable energy resources. Chemical looping combustion (CLC) can meet the requirements of efficient CO2 capture with low energy consumption. The combination of the two factors is intuitive and important for realizing carbon neutral energy processing and conversion. Cellulose is the component with the highest content in biomass. However, there is still a lack of clear understanding of the thermal conversion behavior and microscopic reaction mechanism of cellulose in CLC. In this work, the behaviors and mechanisms of cellulose in CLC with iron-based OCs were studied systematically based on the comprehensive technics of thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) experiments, kinetic models and molecular dynamic simulations. The reaction behaviors, kinetic mechanism, and complex reactive networks of cellulose under complex environmental interface conditions of CLC were revealed. Three different stages were revealed for thermal weight loss and reaction behavior of cellulose in CLC via TGA. The effects of different conversion rates and reaction stages on activation energy during CLC were described based on two model-free integration methods. The dynamic evolution of the CLC process was discussed by ReaxFF MD (reactive force field molecular dynamics) simulations. A complex reaction network of cellulose depolymerization and CO2 release in CLC was obtained.

Objective: Ondansetron administration is a common antemetic of acute pancreatitis therapy in the intensive care unit (ICU), but its actual association with patients’ outcomes has not been confirmed. The study is aimed to determine whether the multiple outcomes of ICU patients with acute pancreatitis could benefit from ondansetron.Methods: 1,030 acute pancreatitis patients diagnosed in 2008–2019 were extracted from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC)-IV database as our study cohort. The primary outcome we considered is the 90-day prognosis, and secondary outcomes included in-hospital survival and overall prognosis.Results: In MIMIC-IV, 663 acute pancreatitis patients received ondansetron administration (OND group) during their hospitalization, while 367 patients did not (non-OND group). Patients in the OND group presented better in-hospital, 90-day, and overall survival curves than the non-OND group (log-rank test: in-hospital: p < 0.001, 90-day: p = 0.002, overall: p = 0.009). After including covariates, ondansetron was associated with better survival in patients with multiple outcomes (in-hospital: HR = 0.50, 90-day: HR = 0.63, overall: HR = 0.66), and the optimal dose inflection points were 7.8 mg, 4.9 mg, and 4.6 mg, respectively. The survival benefit of ondansetron was unique and stable in the multivariate analyses after consideration of metoclopramide, diphenhydramine, and prochlorperazine, which may also be used as antiemetics.Conclusion: In ICU acute pancreatitis patients, ondansetron administration was associated with better 90-day outcomes, while results were similar in terms of in-hospital and overall outcomes, and the recommended minimum total dose might be suggested to be 4–8 mg.

BackgroundWhile the association between physical activity (PA) and depression has been established, there is limited research on the effect of PA on the risk of depression among Chinese individuals. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between PA and depression among Chinese individuals.MethodsWe used a stratified random sampling approach to recruit participants from five urban districts in Wuhan, China. A total of 5,583 permanent residents aged 18 years or older completed questionnaires, which included the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form (IPAQ-SF) to measure PA, and the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) to evaluate depressive symptoms. Objective: To investigate the effects of IMR, iDose4 and FBP reconstruction algorithms on the image quality of multi-row spiral CT in the chest before costal cartilage rhinoplasty. Methods: A total of 60 patients who met the inclusion criteria and planned to receive autogenous costal cartilage rhinoplasty were collected. All patients underwent chest CT examination before operation and completed relevant 3D reconstruction based on images generated by IMR, iDose4 and FBP reconstruction algorithms, and the image quality of the three reconstruction algorithms was analyzed. The subjective evaluation score and objective evaluation indexes of image quality in each group were recorded and compared including costal cartilage CT value, noise, signal-to-noise ratio and contrast noise ratio. Results: The CT reconstruction images obtained by the three algorithms could all accurately assess the degree of costal cartilage calcification. Subjective evaluation of image quality showed that the IMR group obtained higher score and held obvious advantages, mainly reflected in the IMR reconstruction algorithm compared with iDose4 and FBP two algorithms in the costal cartilage calcification spot edge display and inhibition of liver, gastrointestinal content and weakened heart beating artifacts. Objective evaluation of costal cartilage CT value, SNR, contrast noise ratio and statistical analysis, the final statistical results showed that IMR, iDose4 and FBP reconstruction algorithm group showed significant statistical differences, IMR group showed obviously the best image quality. Conclusion: All three reconstruction algorithms of IMR, idose4 and FBP can accurately evaluate the presence and degree of calcification of autologous costal cartilage. Under the same scanning conditions, compared with the reconstruction algorithms of FBP and iDose4, IMR reconstruction algorithms can reducecan significantly reduce image noise, improve CNR and SNR, and improve the subjective image quality of costal cartilage. It is more acceptable to clinical surgeons and can be used as the preferred algorithm reconstruction technique for costal cartilage CT examination, which is most worthy of promotion.

Scale-controlling and technology-upgrading measures are considered effective for mitigating vehicle exhaust emissions. This study investigated the impacts of fuel consumption and vehicle quantities on the total factor inefficiency in China’s highway transport sector during 2011–2015, based on the Bounded Adjusted Measure Data Envelopment Analysis (BAM-DEA) model combined with natural and managerial disposability scenarios. The results showed that the average global inefficiency (GIE) score of the exhaust emissions (CO, HC, NOx, and PM) was 0.41 under the assumption of natural disposability and 0.23 in the managerial disposability situation. Moreover, the main causes of total factor inefficiency scores from the perspective of natural disposability were road length, fuel consumption, and exhaust emissions, whereas those from a managerial disposability perspective were road length and exhaust emissions. These two results suggested that environmental efficiency can be promoted by increasing the quantities of clean-energy vehicles and high-quality gasoline/diesel consumption. In terms of the spatial distribution of GIE, the scores showed a decreasing trend from China’s northwestern inland regions to its southeastern coastal regions under both natural and managerial disposability. Environmental efficiency in some provinces (such as Yunnan) demonstrated good progress under managerial disposability, but other regions did not (such as Hebei and Ningxia). Thus, each province should choose appropriate strategies regarding vehicle quantities and fuel consumption according to the technical inefficiency scores of differing disposability situations.

Objective: To investigate the optimal dosage of contrast agent in three-dimensional dynamic enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (3D CE-MRA) in the imaging of arterial lesions of both lower limbs. Methods: 45 patients who underwent 3D CE-MRA angiography of lower extremity arteries in our hospital were randomly divided into three groups A, B and C. The gadolinium dosages of the three groups were respectively 0.1 mmol/kg, 0.2 mmol/kg and 0.3 mmol/kg. They were injected intravenously with saline at the ratio of 1:1. The images of different dose scanning schemes were scored subjectively and objectively. Subjective scoring: the lower limb arteries were divided into femoral artery, popliteal artery and calf artery (posterior tibial artery, anterior tibial artery and common peroneal artery). The quality of MIP reconstruction images was evaluated, and the overall venous overlap scoring of calf and foot vessels was also carried out. Finally, the differences of the three scanning schemes were compared by Wilcoxon test.The objective scoring is to measure and calculate the signal intensity Si, signal-to-noise ratio SNR and contrast-to-noise ratio of the original enhanced images of the three groups, compare the horizontal signal intensity differences of femoral artery, popliteal artery and calf artery, and compare the differences of the three scanning schemes by t-test. Results: When the contrast medium dosage was 0.1 mmol/kg, the image quality scores of femoral artery, popliteal artery and calf artery were (3.35±0.25), (2.97±0.25), (2.35±1.15) respectively; When the dosage of contrast agent was 0.2 mmol/kg, the scores of the above parts were (3.75±0.35), (3.55±0.32), (2.97±0.70) respectively; When the dosage of contrast agent was 0.3 mmol/kg, the scores of the above parts were (3.90±0.41), (3.83±0.52), (3.10±0.75) respectively. 33.33% of the images in group A did not meet the diagnostic needs, while all the images in group B and C met the diagnostic needs. There was significant difference between group A and group B, and there was no significant difference between group B and group C. B The Si, SNR and CNR of femoral artery and popliteal artery in group C were significantly higher than those in group A, and there was no significant difference between group B and C. The images of group B and C were better than those of group A. Conclusion: Appropriate increase of the contrast medium dosage is helpful to improve the 3D CE-MRA imaging quality of both lower limb arteries. The contrast medium dosage of 0.2 mmol/kg is reliable and accurate for the evaluation of blood vessels, and can provide accurate and reliable imaging basis for the formulation of treatment plan for patients with peripheral artery diseases.
