Adomas Karalius (1854-1946) was one of the most prominent masters of wooden altars, creators of sacred art in the Suvalkai province. He worked in southeastern Lithuania, called Užnemunė, and in Lithuanian ethnic territories in Poland. He created altars, minialtars, pulpits, confessionals, other wooden parts of the church interior decorated with carvings of artistic and historical value. Having come from his native village to the city of Šakiai and having worked for local craftsmen, A. Karalius quickly became famous for his artistic carvings. In 1880 he established The Altar, Carpenter and Other Wood Workshop in Šakiai. An example of his early work is the altar erected in the Scapular Church of the St. Virgin Mary in Gudeliai which have been classified as “the most attractive ensembles of the Lithuanian neo-Gothic style” by expert artists (Prof. Aleksandra Aleksandravičiūtė). In 1903, A. Karalius moved to Suvalkai, another Lithuanian city and the centre of the Province. There he also opened a workshop and called it the Artistic Church Institution. The workshop flourished. He received many orders, he had assistants and students, who later became famous sculptors (Vytautas Košuba, Matas Menčinskas, Antanas Aleksandravičius). He carved altars, pulpits, confessionals, cyborias, organ prospectuses, sacristy furniture, and other wooden parts of the church. After the collapse of the province and the restoration of Lithuania’s independence, around 1920, A. Karalius moved to Marijampolė together with the family of seven children and his Artistic Church Institution. Being no longer young (he lived 93 years), he created artistic, mostly neo-Gothic, neoBaroque forms of sacral art ensembles; some of them are among the “most important neo-Gothic ensembles in Lithuania”. In 1926, after the opening of the State Craft School in Marijampolė, A. Karalius became the first teacher of practical work. For half a century, during the Russian occupation in Lithuania, A. Karalius’ works were just a buried treasure; not only did the artists, in fear of repression, struggle whether to create for church, but art critics were not encouraged to take any interest in sacred art. The restoration of independence (1990) brought about fundamental changes in all fields of art and culture. The researchers of the Department of Sacred Art of the Institute of Cultural Philosophy and Art published several collections of scientific articles examining the ecclesiastical art heritage of Lithuanian dioceses. They also contain important conclusions and remarks about A. Karalius’s legacy (they were referred to in this article). Yet, it remained unclear where and how many of A. Karalius works are. An important discovery was made by the relatives who found among the old papers of Adomas Karalius’s “The List of Works in the Churches.” It is not absolutely accurate and complete but was compiled, “as much as he could remember”, by a master who was already old. However, it is indicated that there are works of A. Karalius in twenty-seven churches in Lithuania and ten in Poland: in Birštonas, Šilavotas, Gelgaudiškis, Didvyžiai, Gražiškės, Mažasis Plockas, Krasnyboras, Sylvanovcas, etc. Following the List, we went (me, musicologist S.J. Vyliūtė, artist Rimantas Tumasonis and Ignas Dučinskas) to the churches of the former Suvalkai Province to look for A. Karalius’s legacy. We did not find much: the churches were damaged during the war, burned down, rebuilt, renewed, our competencies were insufficient to determine exactly where Karalius was after the restoration (for example, in the churches of Aukštadvaris, Kalvarija). However, in some places we were simply blinded by the well-preserved works of the old altar master: in Punskas, Gudeliai, Sasnava where people can see the pulpit, the last piece A. Karalius’s sacral art, which has been declared an object of state-protected heritage. We also detected his works where we did not look for, e.g., in the Nemunaitis church. During the trip, the various attitudes of pastors and congregation towards the church of their parish were revealed. We found out that not only zealous Catholic Poles prominently adore their shrines, as for example in Studzieniczna, but also in the small towns of Lithuania (Paluobiai, Višakio Rūda), where the churches are richly decorated and maintained. The latter article does not claim to the professional insights, meanings and definitions of A. Karalius’s legacy. Its aim was to make at least a narrow exposure in the history of Lithuanian sacred art, to remind of the works of a talented wood master drowning in oblivion.

The aim of the article is to characterize the marriage age of newlyweds in the northern part of Užnemunė and to identify the local identity. For this purpose the Metric Books of Marriages of 1922- 1938 in the Catholic parishes of Barzdai, Gelgaudiškis, Griškabūdis, Ilguva, Kaimelis, Lekėčiai, Lukšiai, Paežerėliai, Paluobiai, Plokščiai, Šakiai, Sintautai, Slavikai, Sudargas, Sutkai, Valakbūdis and Žemoji Panemunė have been analysed. Excluding the local specificity of the region, two economically contrasting regions of the Užnemunė territory have been compared: the southern one inhabited by Dzūkai on low-lying sandy soils, and the northern one inhabited by Zanavykai on wide and fertile plains. The natural features of Dzūkija region did not encourage the development of agriculture, and the inhabitants supported the vitality of archaic forest businesses. As a result, the farms were quite small and had more family members than in Zanavykija. For example, farms of 4 – 6 persons dominated in Alytus and Seinai Counties, and farms of 3 – 5 persons in Šakiai County. The “whole estate of the Dzūkas” was a one-end house, a 3rd class piece of land, a horse, two cows, and a thousand debt to the bank. Meanwhile, Zanavykija was named as the birthplace of Lithuanian craftsmen, priests, linguists, writers, a paradise for Lithuanian gardens and homesteads, where it is “smooth like on God’s table.” There was a lot of fertile land suitable for agriculture, and the region’s inhabitants became the richest Lithuanian farmers in the 19th and 20th centuries. Different economic capacities have influenced the education of the population, the characteristics of the living environment, and, possibly, marital behaviour.

Adomas Karalius (1854-1946) was a master of wood, a folk artist, a notable creator of the sacral art in the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. He was born in Lithuania (in the family of the Šakiai County farmer), and spent a considerable amount of his life and work in the centre of the Suvalkai Province. When he arrived in Suvalkai in 1903, he quickly became famous for impressive wood carvings, received many orders, had assistants and students. Having equipped a workshop he carved altars, pulpits, confessionals, ciborium, organ prospects, sacristy furniture, and other wooden parts of the church interior. In his List of Church of Works, recently discovered by his relatives, it is stated that A. Karalius's works can be found in ten Polish and thirty Lithuanian churches (Punskas, Mažasis Plockas, Studena, Krasnyboras, Sylvanovcai, Kolnas, Birštonas, Šilavotas, Gelgaudiškis, Višakio Rūda, Kalvarija, and elsewhere). They are ornamental, neo-gothic, neo-baroque forms, forming artistic ensembles of the whole; some of them belong to the most important neo-gothic ensembles in Lithuania. The works of Adomas Karalius are still a buried treasure. They have not been catalogued yet, with the exception of a few notes in the periodicals, they have not been evaluated by the specialists, although all the churches are still functioning, and two of A. Karalius's furniture collections have survived in the house of the descendants: rococo style, stylishly carved, white colour. This article also briefly reviews the biographies of A. Karalius‘s children born or raised in Suvalkai. Marked by the gene of art, some of them were prone to visual expression, others - to music. Daughter Anelė Karaliūtė (born Suvalkai in 1909) chose the profession of a singer. After graduating from the Kaunas Music School, she sang the main roles of operas at the State Theatre of Lithuania. However, she sang for only a while: with a small baby on her hands she was deported to Siberia. And not only was she: four of the seven children of Adomas Karalius suffered a brutal beast in hunger in the north of Russia. In 1918, Adomas Karalius returned to Independent Lithuania. He settled in Marijampolė, moved his workshop from Suvalkai and did carving work in them from the early morning to the late retirement. He died when he was 93. He was buried in Marijampolė Cemetery, next to his wife, where two of his daughters were also buried later. The latter article does not claim to provide professional insights, meanings and definitions of A. Karalius inheritance. It is aimed at a minor revelation in the centenary folk art sphere, at reminding of the work and presence of the talented wood master sinking down in the oblivion.

Iki mūsų dienų išlikusios mūrinė Gelgaudiškio, medinės Višakio Rūdos bei Plokščių bažnyčios pastatytos XIX a., tačiau šiose vietovėse pirmosios bažnyčios statytos daug anksčiau. Darbo... Marijampolė‘s region – Užnemunė – is separated from the whole Lithuania for many years. After the third Lithuania – Poland union division Užnemunė and Sūduva was devolved to Prussia. Užnemunė was a part of Warsaw duchy in 1807 and became a part of Poland Kingdom in 1815. Only nineteen wooden and stone churches survived until our days from 1795 – 1917 years. Gelgaudiškio stone church and wooden Višakio Rūdos and Plokščių churches were built in XIX century but it is known that in that area churches were built much more long ago. Some of the earlier churches could be built in XVI century when the first villages were already formed. The church were the cultural centre of small villages: for years all main events happen there, including feasts that attracted lots of people from neighbour villages every year. The main purpose of this work is to determine valuable attributions including sacramental pieces of art and to prepare documentation for inscribing the following objects into the Register: Šv. Kryžiaus Išaukštinimo church of Gelgaudiškis, Šv. vyskupo Stanislovo church of Višakio Rūda and Šv. Mergelės Marijos Vardo church of Plokščiai. 1578 m. Povilo Sapiegos aprūpinimo Zapyškio parapijai aktas, kurio originalas neišlikęs, tačiau žinoma Lomžos vyskupijos archyve saugoma liudijimo kopija, laikytinas ankstyviausiu šiandien turimu tiesioginiu rašytiniu šaltiniu apie parapiją bei jai priklausiusias Zapyškio ir Gelgaudiškio bažnyčias. Iki šiol nepublikuotas, o ankstesniuose tyrimuose interpretuotas dar gana fragmentiškai ir nevienareikšmiškai3, dokumentas neabejotinai svarbus Zapyškio parapijos ir bažnyčios istorijai. Be to, aktas aktualus kaip šaltiniotyros objektas, leidžiantis kelti šaltinio funkcionavimo ir konteksto klausimus. The paper aims to examine Povilas Sapiega’s donation for Zapyškis parish in the year 1578 as it is the oldest known historical written source of the parish and its churches of Zapyškis and Gelgaudiškis. First, the text of the donation copy and its translation into Lithuanian language are given. Then, the publication is supplemented by a comment. Special attention is paid to the issues of the origin of the document. It is suggested that the donation copy was done in the year 1796 in the context of foundation of a new diocese of Vygriai. The paper also tries to comment the content of the document, which reveals historical circumstances of the development of Zapyškis parish and church. It is offered that in the year 1578 Povilas Sapiega supplied for the first time the parish and church, which had been founded by his father Jonas Sapiega. Moreover, the details of supply are disputed.

Based on iconography and material collected during the 2003 expedition and people's narrations, the cross making traditions typical of the Gelgaudiškis area from the first half of the 20th century to this day are discussed in the paper. The wooden monuments of folk small architecture - wooden crosses, roofed poles and chapels put on the trees - are examined in prospect of tradition and innovation. Also monuments of farmsteads, road-sides, cemeteries and church-yards are discussed, their art expression is analysed, and their most typical features and peculiarities are determined. Also, the background related to erection of such monuments is presented, and its significance in the life of a person and the society is evaluated. The cross-making monuments in the environs of Gelgaudiškis show that the traditions in erection of crosses in the first half of the 20th century are still cherished. The old monuments are being restored with conservation of their shape, decoration elements, or even using their old parts. The characteristic features of crosses of this period are their height, slender and elegant proportions, as well as a Sun silhouette formed of geometric or plant motive rays. Erecting new crosses, traditional sites are chosen, usually the roadsides. The art expression of newly-made crosses mostly accord with local traditions: they are simple, laconic, decorated with relief carving on its pole or its centre, also temperate decoration - a crown of rays, as a rule - often distinguishes the centre of the intersection of the cross bars. The motive of lily, popular in Suvalkija area, is often used in old and new crosses. Zanavykai people inhabiting this area used to mark the cross with inscriptions indicating whose this cross is, who donated, and when it was erected. This tradition is respected nowadays as well. The variety in local traditions is expanded by folk masters, especially those coming from other regions (e.g., V. Jackūnas, who comes from Aukštaitija).

Article dwells on the possibilities of sludge disposal from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) in settlements (agglomerations) with the population from 2000 to 10000 inhabitants. During the year 2004 approx. 506800 tons of sludge was produced in all WWTP in Lithuania, and nearly 12390 tons of this sludge was produced in WWTP in settlements with the population from 2000 to I0000 inhabitants. Sludge disposal possibilities in ten settlements (Simnas, Rusnė, Gelgaudiškis, Akmenė, Eišiškės, Ariogala, Ramygala, Kvėdarna, Zarasai ir Rietavas) with the population from 2000 to 10000 inhabitants, each settlement from different counties were analyzed. Three most acceptable methods of sludge utilization were analyzed: sludge use in agriculture (spreading): transporting to the county centre and storing in sludge beds at WWTP: incineration of sludge. These methods were suitable for all settlements. However, from the point of the lowest costs the most acceptable method is sludge use in agriculture. The most expensive way of sludge utilization is incineration (11 times more expensive than sludge use in agriculture, and approx. 2 times more expensive than transporting to sludge beds near WW IP in the main city of the county).

The data about physical capacity development of 76 adolescents with mild mental disability from two special boarding-schools situated in Kaunas and Gelgaudiškis are presented in the paper. Physical capacity has been established applying EUROFIT tests. Estimation of physical activities during physical education lessons of pupils from both schools, as well as their extracurricular and working activities has been carried out. Comparison of physical activities and physical capacity of schoolchildren of these schools has been made too. Comparison of physical capacity of adolescents with mild mental disability and healthy Lithuanian children of the same age, has also been made. It has been established that there was an uneven increase in the height of with mild mental disability children with age and that the boys surpassed the girls in height. The weight of adolescents of both sexes in all age groups was alike. Height and weight of the pupils disabled were smaller if compared with their healthy peers of the same age. Increase in physical capacity with age in years of adolescence among mentally retarded schoolchildren was not marked and uneven. A bit greater increase of physical capacity has been registered in teenagers aged 15-16 years. If compared with healthy Lithuanian children the level of physical capacity of most mentally retarded adolescents was low, with the exception of general balance that was high or exceeded the average level in over half of the teenagers investigated. When performing other tests higher level of physical capacity has been demonstrated by individual teenagers, boys mostly. It has also been established that more active physical activities practiced by schoolchildren of the Gelgaudiškis special boardingschool contributed to higher level of general balance, hanging with the arms bent and agility. Static force was higher only in the case of the boys.
