Mucus plugs occlude airways to obstruct airflow in asthma. Studies in patients and in mouse models show that mucus plugs occur in the context of type 2 inflammation, and studies in human airway epithelial cells (HAECs) show that IL-13-activated cells generate pathologic mucus independently of immune cells. To determine how HAECs autonomously generate pathologic mucus, we used a magnetic microwire rheometer to characterize the viscoelastic properties of mucus secreted under varying conditions. We found that normal HAEC mucus exhibited viscoelastic liquid behavior and that mucus secreted by IL-13-activated HAECs exhibited solid-like behavior caused by mucin cross-linking. In addition, IL-13-activated HAECs shows increased peroxidase activity in apical secretions, and an overlaid thiolated polymer (thiomer) solution shows an increase in solid behavior that was prevented by peroxidase inhibition. Furthermore, gene expression for thyroid peroxidase (TPO), but not lactoperoxidase (LPO), was increased in IL-13-activated HAECs and both TPO and LPO catalyze the formation of oxidant acids that cross-link thiomer solutions. Finally, gene expression for TPO in airway epithelial brushings was increased in patients with asthma with high airway mucus plug scores. Together, our results show that IL-13-activated HAECs autonomously generated pathologic mucus via peroxidase-mediated cross-linking of mucin polymers.

After traumatic brain injury, the brain extracellular matrix undergoes structural rearrangement due to changes in matrix composition, activation of proteases, and deposition of chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans by reactive astrocytes to produce the glial scar. These changes lead to a softening of the tissue, where the stiffness of the contusion core and peripheral pericontusional regions becomes softer than that of healthy tissue. Pioneering mechanotransduction studies have shown that soft substrates upregulate intermediate filament proteins in reactive astrocytes; however, many other aspects of astrocyte biology remain unclear. Here, we developed a platform for the culture of cortical astrocytes using polyacrylamide (PA) gels of varying stiffness (measured in Pascal; Pa) to mimic injury-related regions in order to investigate the effects of tissue stiffness on astrocyte reactivity and morphology. Our results show that substrate stiffness influences astrocyte phenotype; soft 300 Pa substrates led to increased GFAP immunoreactivity, proliferation, and complexity of processes. Intermediate 800 Pa substrates increased Aggrecan+, Brevican+, and Neurocan+ astrocytes. The stiffest 1 kPa substrates led to astrocytes with basal morphologies, similar to a physiological state. These results advance our understanding of astrocyte mechanotransduction processes and provide evidence of how substrates with engineered stiffness can mimic the injury microenvironment.

Tardigrades are microscopic animals that survive desiccation by inducing biostasis. To survive drying tardigrades rely on intrinsically disordered CAHS proteins, which also function to prevent perturbations induced by drying in vitro and in heterologous systems. CAHS proteins have been shown to form gels both in vitro and in vivo, which has been speculated to be linked to their protective capacity. However, the sequence features and mechanisms underlying gel formation and the necessity of gelation for protection have not been demonstrated. Here we report a mechanism of fibrillization and gelation for CAHS D similar to that of intermediate filament assembly. We show that in vitro, gelation restricts molecular motion, immobilizing and protecting labile material from the harmful effects of drying. In vivo, we observe that CAHS D forms fibrillar networks during osmotic stress. Fibrillar networking of CAHS D improves survival of osmotically shocked cells. We observe two emergent properties associated with fibrillization; (i) prevention of cell volume change and (ii) reduction of metabolic activity during osmotic shock. We find that there is no significant correlation between maintenance of cell volume and survival, while there is a significant correlation between reduced metabolism and survival. Importantly, CAHS Ds fibrillar network formation is reversible and metabolic rates return to control levels after CAHS fibers are resolved. This work provides insights into how tardigrades induce reversible biostasis through the self-assembly of labile CAHS gels.

The concentration of harmful metal ions is growing globally, which raises the risk to both human and ecological health. The use of "adsorption" technique has been found to be very effective, for the removal of toxic metal ions. Among other things, hydrogels as an adsorbent work effectively for the removal of toxic metal ions and other aquatic pollutants. The newly designed potato starch‐xanthate (SX) based hydrogel (SX‐modified hydrogel) has been synthesized using a mixture of acrylamide (AAm) and acrylic acid (AA) monomers, with the help of free‐radical graft copolymerization technique. The synthesized SX‐modified hydrogel has been characterized by several analytical techniques, namely, UV–visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, point of zero charge (ΔpHPZC) analysis, x‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. The main objective of the current work is to remove the Cu2+ and Co2+ ions from wastewater using SX‐modified hydrogel as well as to study the swelling and water retention properties of the SX‐modified hydrogel. The swelling ratio of SX‐modified hydrogel has been found to be 312.31, 374.01, and 410.20 g/g at optimum pH 10, temperature 35°C, time 675 min in gray wastewater, tap water, and distilled water, respectively. The maximum percentage removal of Cu2+ and Co2+ ions by SX‐modified hydrogel has been found as 97.7% and 94.2%, respectively, at optimum conditions. The Langmuir isotherm model fits best with the experimental data, with maximum adsorption capacity of 515.46 mg/g for Cu2+ and 483.09 mg/g for Co2+ ions, respectively. The kinetic studies suggest that the adsorption process is governed by the second order kinetic model with rate constant of 2.06 × 10−4 g/(mg min) for Cu2+ and 1.79 × 10−4 g/(mg min) for Co2+ ions, respectively. The negative ΔG values suggest the adsorption process is spontaneous in nature. In addition, the positive ΔH values support the adsorption process is endothermic in nature. The SX‐modified hydrogel showed a remarkable desorption efficiency with 96.7% for Cu2+ and 92.5% for Co2+ ions and reusability for four consecutive adsorption–desorption cycles. It can be concluded that the SX‐modified hydrogel has showed an effective, economical, easy, low energy consuming, and significant potential in the treatment of wastewater containing heavy metal ions. A new design policy to synthesize nanogel molecules having desired dimensions under unperturbed state is proposed. Miniemulsion copolymerization of vinyl and divinyl monomers, both conventional free‐radical polymerization and ideal living polymerization, is used to illustrate the method. For the network formation dynamics, the newly proposed model that takes into account the size and structure dependence of cross‐linking/cyclization reactions is employed. The master curve relationship that indicates the maximum average dimensions for randomly cross‐linked networks is used as a guideline and the network dimension is controlled by the magnitude of network maturity index NMI, which is the average number of cycle rank per primary chain. By appropriately sizing the NMI, it is possible to synthesize network polymers with dimensions equal to or greater than the maximum dimensions achievable with a homogeneous, randomly cross‐linked network polymer of the same cycle rank and molecular weight. The current strategy of designing and controlling 3D size is applicable regardless of the reaction mechanism of network formation and will also be applied to the synthesis of macro‐gels. Numerous studies have reported in the past that the use of protein‐encoding DNA hydrogels as templates for cell‐free protein synthesis (CFPS) leads to better yields than the use of conventional templates such as plasmids or PCR fragments. Systematic investigation of different types of bulk materials from pure DNA hydrogels and DNA hydrogel composites using a commercially available CFPS kit showed no evidence of improved expression efficiency. However, protein‐coding DNA hydrogels were advantageously used in microfluidic reactors as immobilized templates for repetitive protein production, suggesting that DNA‐based materials offer potential for future developments in high‐throughput profiling or rapid in situ characterization of proteins. Efficient synthesis of H2O2 via photocatalytic oxygen reduction without sacrificial agents is challenging due to inadequate proton supply from water and difficulty in maintaining O−O bond during O2 activation. Herein, we developed a straightforward strategy involving a proton‐rich hydrogel cross‐linked by metal ions [M(n)], which is designed to facilitate the selective production of H2O2 through proton relay and metal ion‐assisted detachment of crucial intermediates. The hydrogel comprises CdS/graphene and alginate cross‐linked by metal ions via O=C−O−M(n) bonds. Efficient O2 reduction and hydrogenation occurred, benefitting from the collaboration between proton‐rich alginate and the photocatalytically active CdS/graphene. Meanwhile, the O=C−O−M(n) bonds enhance the electron density of α‐carbon sites on graphene, crucial for O2 activation and *OOH intermediate detachment, preventing deeper O−O bond cleavage. The role of metal ions in promoting *OOH desorption was demonstrated through Lewis acidity‐dependent activity, with Y(III) having the highest activity, followed by Lu(III), La(III), and Ca(II). Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) is a microbially derived polyhydroxyalkanoate that is widely used in biomedical applications. In this study, we investigated the use of acetic acid (aa) as an alternative environmentally friendly solvent for the preparation of gels from PHB (PHB aa) and compared their characteristics with PHB products dissolved in chloroform (PHB chl) using such methods as DSC, FTIR, SEM, rheometry, biodegradation, and cytocompatibility assay. A slight decrease in the degree of the crystallinity of the PHB from 61% to 50.8% was found when the acetic acid was used. This resulted in a greater mass loss for the PHB aa (11%) during enzymatic degradation over 180 days. Gels prepared from PHB in the different solvents showed differences in the microstructure and porosity of the samples, which affected their viscoelastic properties. The storage modulus (G′) for the PHB aa gels was higher by 35% compared to that for the PHB chl, and Young's modulus in compression was 101.5 and 41.3 kPa for the PHB aa and PHB chl, respectively. The porosity of the PHB aa was 97.7%, which was 5.2% higher than that for the PHB chl. The presence of low molecular weight polymers in the PHB aa had an effect on mesenchymal stem cells' viability, expressed as a threefold increase in the number of attached cells after 7 days of incubation compared to the PHB chl. Thus, the proposed method of PHB-based materials' preparation is a promising, more environmentally friendly analog of the extensively used method of preparation from chloroform. Shifting focus to aerogels, a thorough overview is presented, followed by a detailed explanation of the complex formulation process involving sol–gel chemistry; aging; solvent exchange; and drying techniques, including freeze drying, supercritical drying, and ambient-pressure drying (APD). The intricacies of drug loading and release from aerogels are addressed, providing insights into their pharmaceutical potential. Gelatin is a promising biopolymer for edible coatings thanks to its low cost and gelling properties. However, its weak mechanical properties limit its use. This study aimed to develop a gelatin coating with tomato extract, analyzing its antioxidant activity and rheological properties for food applications. Gelatin concentrations (2, 5, and 7%) were evaluated, and it was determined that 7% with 7.5% glycerol was the optimal mixture. Three concentrations of tomato extract (0.5, 1, and 1.5%) were added, and antioxidant activity was evaluated using the ABTS technique, as well as the interaction of components through FT-IR and physicochemical analysis. The results showed that there were no significant differences in terms of their physicochemical characterization, maintaining a pH of 5 and a yellowish hue. The FT-IR spectra indicated there were hydrogen bond interactions between gelatin and the extract. The antioxidant capacity was higher with the 1.5% extract, achieving an inhibition of 58.9%. It was found that the combination of the different materials used improved the rheological (specifically the viscosity and stability of the material) and antioxidant properties of the gelatin. We report the successful assembly of a tripeptide in the presence of nanodiamonds (NDs) into nanocomposite hydrogels. While the presence of NDs does not hinder peptide self‐assembly and gelation kinetics are not affected, NDs improve the viscoelastic properties and significantly increase the elastic moduli of the peptide hydrogels. Increased resistance of the gels against applied stress can also be attained depending on the amount of NDs loaded in the nanocomposite. Raman micro‐spectroscopy and TEM confirmed the presence of NDs on the surface, and not in the interior, of peptide nanofibers. Peptide‐ND non‐covalent interactions are also probed by Raman and Fourier‐transformed infrared spectroscopies. Overall, this work enables the embedding of NDs into nanocomposite hydrogels formed through the self‐assembly of a simple tripeptide at physiological pH, and it provides key insights to open the way for their future applications in biomaterials, for instance exploiting their luminescence and near‐infrared responsiveness. DNA hydrogels hold significant promise for biomedical applications and can be synthesized through enzymatic Rolling Circle Amplification (RCA). Due to the exploratory nature of this emerging field, standardized RCA protocols specifying the impact of reaction parameters are currently lacking. This study varied template sequences and reagent concentrations, evaluating RCA synthesis efficiency and hydrogel mechanical properties through quantitative PCR (qPCR) and indentation measurements, respectively. Primer concentration and stabilizing additives showed minimal impact on RCA efficiency, while changes in polymerase and nucleotide concentrations had a stronger effect. Concentration of the circular template exerted the greatest influence on RCA productivity. An exponential correlation between hydrogel viscosity and DNA amplicon concentration was observed, with nucleobase sequence significantly affecting both amplification efficiency and material properties, particularly through secondary structures. This study suggests that combining high‐throughput experimental methods with structural folding prediction offers a viable approach for systematically establishing structure‐property relationships, aiding the rational design of DNA hydrogel material systems. This study introduces a technique for decontaminating radioactive surfaces by employing a gel, herein termed as radiation decontamination gel with eutectic liquids (RADGEL), composed of a deep eutectic solvent and polyvinyl alcohol, with the goal of enabling reuse of the surface post‐decontamination. The decontamination effectiveness of RADGEL underwent thorough evaluation through trials conducted on different simulated surfaces, achieving decontamination efficiency up to 99.9% for alpha as well as gamma radionuclides. The various parameters influencing decontamination factors such as amount of complexing agent used, polymer film thickness, nature, and magnitude of radioactivity, as well as surface characteristics of substrates to be decontaminated were optimized. Additionally excellent mechanical strength of RADGEL, affirms its potential as practically efficient, cost‐effective, and safe option for surface decontamination. The Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis suggest RADGELs capability for both physical and chemical interactions with contaminants, thus highlighting its comprehensive decontamination efficacy. We report the use of wet‐spinning to 3D‐print gels from low‐molecular‐weight gelators (LMWGs) based on the 1,3 : 2,4‐dibenzylidenesorbitol (DBS) scaffold. Gel stripes assembled from DBS‐CONHNH2 and DBS‐COOH are printed, and their conductivities assessed. Printed gels based on DBS‐CONHNH2 can be loaded with Au(III), which is reduced in situ to form embedded gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The conductivity of these gels increases because of electron transport mediated by the AuNPs, whereas the conductivity of DBS‐COOH, which does not promote AuNP formation, remains lower. We then fabricate multi‐component gel patterns comprised of spatially well‐defined domains of printed DBS‐CONHNH2/AuNP (higher conductivity) and DBS‐COOH (lower conductivity) resulting in soft multi‐domain materials with differential conductivity. 1H spin–lattice relaxation experiments have been performed for gels based on fish collagen in order to analyze water dynamics. The covered frequency range ranges from 10 kHz to 10 MHz; in some cases, the temperature has varied as well. The relaxation data have been reproduced in terms of two models of water motion—a model including two relaxation contributions associated with the diffusion of water molecules on the macromolecular surfaces and a second model being just a phenomenological power law. The concept of surface diffusion has led to a very good agreement with the experimental data and a consistent set of parameters, with the diffusion coefficients being about five orders of magnitude slower compared to bulk water for one of the pools and considerably faster for the second one (smaller by factors between 2 and 20 compared to bulk water). In some cases, the attempt to reproduce the data in terms of a power law has led to a good agreement with the experimental data (the power law factor varying between 0.41 and 0.57); however, in other cases, the discrepancies are significant. Polyelectrolyte (PE) gels, distinguished by their unique stimuli-responsive swelling behavior, serve as the basis of broad applications, such as artificial muscles and drug delivery. In this work, we present a theoretical model to analyze the electrostatics and its contribution to the swelling behavior of PE gels in salt solutions. By minimizing the free energy of PE gels, we obtain two distinct scaling regimes for the swelling ratio at equilibrium with respect to the salt concentration. We compare our predictions for the swelling ratio with experimental measurements, which show excellent agreement. In addition, we employ a finite element method to assess the applicability range of our theoretical model and assumptions. We anticipate that our model will also provide valuable insights into drug adsorption and release, deformation of red blood cells, 4D printing and soft robotics, where the underlying mechanism of swelling remains enigmatic. Despite the numerous ongoing research studies in the area of conducting polymer-based electrode materials for supercapacitors, the implementation has been inadequate for commercialization. Further understanding is required for the design and synthesis of suitable materials like conducting polymer-based gels as electrode materials for supercapacitor applications. Among the polymers, conductive polymer gels (CPGs) have generated great curiosity for their use as supercapacitors, owing to their attractive qualities like integrated 3D porous nanostructures, softness features, very good conductivity, greater pseudo capacitance, and environmental friendliness. In this review, we describe the current progress on the synthesis of CPGs for supercapacitor applications along with their morphological behaviors and thermal properties. We clearly explain the synthesis approaches and related phenomena, including electrochemical approaches for supercapacitors, especially their potential applications as supercapacitors based on these materials. Focus is also given to the recent advances of CPG-based electrodes for supercapacitors, and the electrochemical performances of CP-based promising composites with CNT, graphene oxides, and metal oxides is discussed. Nanocellulose has emerged as a widely utilized building block in nanostructured materials due to its availability, sustainability, large surface area, and high stiffness and aspect ratio. The wet or dry elastoplastic properties of these materials are determined by the fibrils' stiffness, chemical properties, hemicellulose content, and the number of fibril contacts. However, the specific contributions and relative importance of each factor remain unclear. Therefore, this work was devoted to systematically comparing the material properties of gels, aerogels, and wet and dry sheets prepared from CNFs with different aspect ratios, chemical functionality, and hemicellulose content. The fibrils were prepared by chemical and mechanical processing of different pulps. By preserving the native structure as much as possible, higher aspect ratio fibrils can be obtained, which allows for the development of more mechanically robust materials. The results demonstrate that higher aspect ratios lead to more interconnected networks at a lower solids concentration, resulting in a more evenly distributed stress and longer-range stress transfer, yielding stiffer and more ductile materials. The most important finding was that the aspect ratio influences the network formation, resulting in different network topologies. The results were also compared to earlier published data and integrated into a theoretical beam-bending model for a complete elastoplastic description of the network properties, including the influence of fibril aspect ratio and chemical functionality. This information improves our understanding and description of nanofibril networks for which general models have been missing. INTRODUCTION. The examination of protocols for clinical trials of locally applied and locally acting medicinal products highlights challenges that developers face when selecting the design, endpoints, population, comparison groups, and sample size. An analysis of the most common errors in clinical trial protocols will help minimise the number of comments from protocol reviewers and accelerate the process of bringing novel medicinal products to the pharmaceutical market.AIM. This study aimed to analyse the results of evaluating clinical trials of locally applied and locally acting medicinal products conducted with due consideration of the recent additions to the Rules for Conducting Bioequivalence Studies of Medicinal Products within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU); assess the main advantages of the added requirements and the challenges remaining in protocol development; and make recommendations for the most effective application of existing laws and regulations.DISCUSSION. The Rules for Conducting Bioequivalence Studies of Medicinal Products within the EAEU were supplemented with Appendices 11, 12, and 13 in August 2023. Since then, protocol reviewers have accumulated sufficient experience in the examination of clinical trial protocols for locally applied and locally acting medicinal products. This article presents the most frequent comments made during the examination of clinical trial protocols and provides recommendations for corrective actions. The most challenging aspects of drafting a protocol for a clinical trial of a locally applied and locally acting medicinal product include the selection and justification of primary/secondary endpoints and the calculation and justification of the population size. The difficulty is probably due to the lack of a detailed description of study characteristics in EAEU laws and regulations. Locally applied and locally acting corticosteroids are the least challenging medicinal products in terms of protocol drafting because EAEU legislation and scientific publications provide the most detailed guidance for them.CONCLUSIONS. The analysis of protocols for clinical trials of locally applied and locally acting medicinal products, relevant EAEU requirements, and applicable international guidelines identified several major challenges, including the selection of primary/secondary endpoints, the characterisation of the trial population, and the justification of the sample size. The recommendations presented in this article will help applicants in planning clinical trials aimed at accelerating the launch of medicinal products into the pharmaceutical market.

Multi‐responsive, self‐healing hydrogels were developed utilizing positively charged polysaccharides, chitosan, and water‐soluble chitosan. This fabrication employed free‐radical synthesized polyacrylic acid and polymethacrylic acid along with the cross‐linker FeCl3, resulting in the generation of polyelectrolyte metal complexes, which enhances the properties of the chitosan‐based hydrogels, particularly their mechanical strength, self‐healing ability, thermal stability, swelling behavior, porous structure, cell viability, and even anticancer activity. Characterization and stability assessment of the hydrogels were performed using FT‐IR, nuclear magnetic resonance, gel permeation chromatography, scanning electron microscopy, rheometer, x‐ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, DSC, and UV spectroscopy. FT‐IR measurements indicated that the facile complexation of the cross‐linker's metal ions (Fe3+) with the carboxylate (COO−), amino (NH), and hydroxyl (OH) groups of the polymers and chitosan chains facilitated rapid gelation. Furthermore, the sustained release of the drug levofloxacin (up to 80%) was observed to increase with increasing pH due to the hydrogels' anionic nature. Biocompatibility and cytotoxicity tests were conducted using the MTT assay on splenocytes and Dalton Lymphoma cancer cell lines. Understanding mass transport in the alteration layers of glass surfaces is a crucial component of the safety assessment of nuclear waste glass. In this work, we model such an alteration layer as a silicate gel with water through a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation with a reactive force field. Gels with various water contents (WCs) ranging from 5.1 to 30.7wt%$30.7 \,{\rm wt}\%$ are produced via high‐temperature annealing with water and silica. It is found that an increase in the water content destroys the polymerized structure of the silicate network and promotes the formation of silanol groups. The pore size and water connectivity formed by the silicate networks are investigated for the modeled gels. Gel with a WC of 5.7wt%$5.7 \,{\rm wt}\%$ is composed of isolated water in the pores; in contrast, pores filled with interconnected water are formed in gel with a WC of 30.7wt%$30.7 \,{\rm wt}\%$. The water diffusivity in the modeled gel is calculated using the mean‐squared displacement at various temperatures. An attempt is made to formulate a linear relationship between the water diffusivity and porosity derived from the MD simulation. The porosity is calculated using a probe atom with a radius, which was optimized from a linear relationship between the water diffusivity and porosity. This approach successfully explains the water diffusivity in terms of the porosity. Random walk (RW) simulations for the structures derived from the MD simulations are performed to determine the geometrical effects of the pores. The diffusivity obtained from RW simulation is compared with the results of the MD simulations, which include chemical interactions such as the formation and breakage of hydrogen bonds. Low‐molecular‐weight (LMW) gelators are a versatile class of compounds able to self‐assemble and to form supramolecular materials, such as gels. The use of LMW peptides to produce these gels shows many advantages, because of their wide structure tunability, the low‐cost and effective synthesis, and the in vivo biocompatibility and biodegradability, which makes them optimal candidates for release and delivery applications. In addition, in these materials, the binding of the hosts may occur through a variety of noncovalent interactions, which are also the main factors responsible for the self‐assembly of the gelators, and through specific interactions with the fibers or the pores of the gel matrix. This review aims to report LMW gels based on amino acid and peptide derivatives used for the release of many different species (drugs, fragrances, dyes, proteins, and cells) with a focus on the possible strategies to incorporate the cargo in these materials, and to demonstrate how versatile these self‐assembled materials are in several applications. It remains a great challenge to achieve strong and reversible hydrogel adhesion. Hydrogel adhesives also suffer from poor environmental stability due to dehydration. To overcome these problems, here reversible adhesive gels are designed using a new switching mechanism and new solvent. For the first time, the study observes UCST (upper critical solution temperature)‐type thermosensitive behaviors of poly(benzyl acrylate) (PBnA) polymer and gel in menthol:thymol deep eutectic solvents (DESs). The temperature‐induced phase transition allows adjusting cohesive force, and hence adhesion strength of PBnA gels by temperature. To further improve the mechanical and adhesion properties, a peptide crosslinker is used to allow energy dissipation when deforming. The resulting eutectogel exhibits thermal reversible adhesion with a high switching ratio of 14.0. The adhesion strength at attachment state reaches 0.627 MPa, which is much higher than most reversible adhesive hydrogels reported before. The low vapor pressure of DES endows the gel excellent environmental stability. More importantly, the gel can be repeatedly switched between attachment and detachment states. The strong and reversible gel adhesive is successfully used to design soft gripper for the transport of heavy cargos and climbing robot capable of moving on vertical and inverted surface in a manner similar to gecko. Hydrogel‐based actuators are innovative materials that exhibit responsive and dynamic behavior in response to external stimuli, making them promising candidates for a wide range of applications in fields such as soft robotics. We employ 3D printing to create layered rectangles, using a passive ink composed of gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) and an active ink consisting of GelMA and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM). Our aim is to assess and compare the bending capabilities of these structures based on their layer arrangements in a buffer above the lower critical solution temperature. Therefore, an asymmetric rectangular structure is selected as the shape‐changing component in the tail of a 3D printed fish‐shaped hydrogel actuator. We show that gold nanostars integrated into the actuators serve as photothermal elements, enabling the fish tail to repeatedly bend when near infrared light is turned on and off. Our effort illustrates the potential of combining 3D printing, responsive hydrogels and photothermal elements with near infrared light towards soft robotic applications. Polymer networks remain an essential class of soft materials. Despite their use in everyday materials, connecting the molecular structure of the network to its macroscopic properties remains an active area of research. Much current research is enabled by advances in modern polymer chemistry providing an unprecedented level of control over macromolecular structure. At the same time, renewed interest in self‐healing, dynamic, and/or adaptable materials continues to drive substantial interest in polymer network design. As part of a special issue focused on research performed in the Polymer Science and Engineering Department at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, this review highlights connections between macromolecular structure of networks and observed mechanical properties as investigated by the Tew research group. The application of gel wearable sensors in aquatic environments is very promising, however, the preparation of underwater gel sensors with excellent anti‐swelling properties and sensing performance remains a great challenge. In this paper, a solvent exchange strategy is proposed to fabricate an anti‐swelling gel, in which the hydrophobic segments are induced to gather and microphase separation occurs inside the gel. The prepared gel possesses excellent anti‐swelling performance (swelling ratio of 4.79%), good mechanical properties (tensile strain of 712%), high sensitivity (GF = 1.07), and high linearity (R2 = 0.998, 0 to 70% strain range). Moreover, it can achieve high stability (more than 90 days) and fatigue resistance (1000 cycles at 50% strain) as an underwater sensor. Therefore, the designed underwater gel strain sensors can be utilized for monitoring human motion information, underwater distress and smart alarms, revealing the great potential application in the field of underwater strain sensors. Appropriate mechanical properties is one of the prerequisites for the applications of hydrogels, where cross‐linker is a crucial component in manipulating such mechanical property. Herein, acryloyl‐functionalized polyethyleneimine (APEI) was innovatively used as novel functional cross‐links to optimize the mechanical properties of polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogels. APEI cross‐links were synthesized by simply adding acryloyl chloride into polyethyleneimine in aqueous solution. The chemical structures of APEI were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. APEI possessed massive highly acryloyl functional groups that can serve as multifunctional cross‐linking centers for the polymerization of monomers via covalent bonding interactions. These covalent bonds are favorable for constructing a firm 3D cross‐linked networks for hydrogels to withstand deformations, endowing hydrogels with the improved mechanical properties. The tensile strength with an elongation at break for the hydrogels can reach 234 kPa and 18.4‐fold, respectively. In addition, even the hydrogels can bear cyclic mechanical loads and deformations for 50 cycles at 5‐fold stain, indicating a good fatigue resistance. The deformability of APEI cross‐links clusters under stretching was responsible for the stretchability of PAM/APEI hydrogels. In this work, the products of the interaction of polyvinylsilsesquioxane (PVS) and polyvinyl-polydimethylsiloxane with tris(3-chlorosulfenyl-2,4-pentanedionate) aluminum were studied. The substances were isolated through the gelation stage, and after drying, insoluble crosslinked polymers are formed. Using data from thermogravimetry (TGA), diffractometry and positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS), the structure and composition were investigated for the first time obtained polyaluminoorganylsiloxanes. The diffractometry data demonstrated that the obtained metallochelates are spatial mesomorphic polymers with a fractal structure. Based on the calculated data of the PAS, it is shown that the annihilation of positronium in the polymer matrix occurs on oxygen, while the size of the resulting fractal turns out to be less than the molecular volume of the elementary link. The results of the thermogravimetric study indicate a greater thermal stability of aluminum compounds compared to the chromium derivatives described earlier. According to scanning electron microscopy (SEM), it was found that the surface of the formed metallochelates corresponds to the characteristic monolithic morphology of xerogels. This study reports the reversible solubility switching of a polymer triggered by non‐phototoxic visible light. A photochromic polymerizable azobenzene monomer with four methoxy groups at the ortho‐position (mAzoA) was synthesized, exhibiting reversible photoisomerization between trans‐ and cis‐states using green (546 nm) and blue light (436 nm). Free radical copolymerization of hydrophilic dimethylacrylamide (DMAAm) with mAzoA produced a light‐responsive random copolymer (P(mAzoA‐r‐DMAAm)) that shows a reversible photochromic reaction to visible light. Optimizing mAzoA content resulted in P(mAzoA10.7‐r‐DMAAm)3.0 kDa exhibiting LCST‐type phase separation in PBS (pH 7.4) with trans‐ and cis‐states at 39.2 °C and 32.9 °C, respectively. The bistable temperature range of 6.3 °C covers 37 °C, suitable for mammalian cell culture. Reversible solubility changes were demonstrated under alternating green and blue light at 37 °C. 1H NMR indicated significant retardation of thermal relaxation from cis‐ to trans‐states, preventing undesired thermal mechanical degradation. Madin Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) cells adhered to the P(mAzoA‐r‐DMAAm) hydrogel, confirming its non‐cytotoxicity and potential for biocompatible interfaces. Herein, a cationic hydrogel microsphere (CHMS) was prepared by inverse suspension polymerization and freeze‐drying and was applied to the adsorptive removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from aqueous solution. Morphological characterization shows that there are lots of folds and pores on the surface of CHMS with a unique petal‐like appearance. According to the chemical structure analysis, CHMS contains plenty of functional groups such as amine and hydroxyl groups. These features give CHMS a larger specific surface area, faster adsorption rate, and higher adsorption capacity than the conventional cationic hydrogel microparticle (CHMP) adsorbent. The adsorption of Cr(VI) in water by CHMS is mainly based on the combination of electrostatic adsorption and redox reaction, with the electrostatic interaction between the protonated amine and Cr(VI) serving as the predominant adsorption mechanism. Experimental results reveal that CHMS can efficiently remove Cr(VI) from simulated wastewater in both batch and continuous adsorption modes, which is primarily due to its distinctive surface morphology and rich functional groups. Furthermore, the common coexisting metal ions in Cr(VI)‐containing wastewater have no substantial negative influence on the adsorption. Deep eutectic solvent (DES)‐based eutectogels, known for their superior ionic conductivity, non‐volatility, biocompatibility, and cost‐effectiveness, have emerged as promising materials for flexible devices. However, the development of tough and stretchable eutectogels remains a significant challenge. Herein, we introduce a one‐step in‐situ phase separation strategy to fabricate tough and stretchable P(MAA‐co‐AAm)/TEAC‐EG copolymer eutectogels through random copolymerization of methacrylic acid (MAA) and acrylamide (AAm) in a tetraethylammonium chloride‐ethylene glycol (TEAC‐EG) DES. The poor compatibility of PAAm segments with TEAC‐EG DES results in the formation of a polymer‐rich phase, leading to energy dissipation during loading. Simultaneously, PMAA segments exhibiting good compatibility with DES, form a solvent‐rich phase that distributes stress and facilitates ion migration. The synergy between these two phases imparts ultratoughness and excellent conductivity to the copolymer eutectogel. The resultant copolymer eutectogel exhibits high strength (2.40 MPa), toughness (22.90 MJ m−3), and remarkable stretchability of 1340%, while demonstrating excellent self‐recovery, self‐healing abilities, and adhesive performance. Notably, its ionic conductivity reaches 1.07 mS cm−1 at 20°C, rendering these eutectogels well‐suited for applications as strain sensors in human motion detection. This study presents a facile approach to tune eutectogel microstructure and properties, thereby expanding their potential applications in high‐performance flexible electronics. Ionic conductive hydrogels have caught much attention for serving as wearable sensors, however, most hydrogel sensors are difficult to be used for repeated sensing due to low toughness and poor self‐recovery. Here, tough and self‐recovery hydrogels are constructed by introducing xanthan gum into poly(acrylamide‐co‐trimethyl ammonium chloride) (P(Am‐DMC)) hydrogel network. Xanthan gum can bind with P(Am‐DMC) chains via hydrogen bonds and the carboxyl group from xanthan gum generates electrostatic interaction with DMC, thus improving the mechanical toughness and fatigue resistance. Furthermore, the hydrogel is highly sensitive to mechanical deformation and presents durability for repeated stretching or compression, which can be designed as a wearable sensor for human motion detection. This article presents a numerical scheme for the variational model formulated by Calderer et al. [J. Elast., 141 (2020), pp. 51-73] for the debonding of a hydrogel film from a rigid substrate upon exposure to solvent, in the two-dimensional case of a film placed between two parallel walls. It builds upon the scheme introduced by Song et al. [J. Elast., 153 (2023), pp. 651-679] for completely bonded gels, which fails to be robust in the case of gels that are already debonded. The new scheme is used to compute the energy release rate function, based on which predictions are offered for the threshold thickness below which the gel/substrate system is stable against debonding. This study, in turn, makes it possible to validate a theoretical estimate for the energy release rate obtained in the cited works, which is based on a thin-film asymptotic analysis and which, due to its explicit nature, is potentially valuable in medical device development. Controlled synthesis of 3D polymer networks presents a significant challenge because of the complexity of the polymerization reaction in solution. In this study, a polymerization system that facilitates the prediction of a polymer network structure via percolation simulations is realized. The most significant difference between general percolation simulations and experimental polymerization systems is the mobility of the molecules during the reaction. A crystal component‐linking method that connects the precisely arranged monomer as a supramolecular crystalline state to imitate the simple percolation theory is adopted. The percolation simulation based on the crystal structure of the arranged monomers is used to accurately calculate the gelation point, gel fraction, degree of swelling, and atomic formula, which correspond with the experimental results. This suggests that the network structures polymerized via the crystal component‐linking method can be predicted precisely by a simple percolation simulation. Further, the percolation simulation predicts the structures of the loop, branched polymer, and crosslinking point, which are difficult to measure experimentally. The performance of ceramic proppant tended to deteriorate during service, and one of the main reasons was the formation of water corrosion on the proppant surface. The proppant was isothermally soaked in formation water and the proppant immersed for different times was characterized by X‐ray fluorescence spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron micrscopy. It is found that Cl− in the formation water can migrate to the proppant surface by diffusion and cause corrosion, which degrades its performance. Silica of the proppant can react with Cl− of formation water to form SiCl4, which will rapidly hydrolyze to produce opaque silica gel or silicic acid gel coating the proppant surface. With the extension of immersion time, the gel becomes thicker and more, promoting the degradation of the proppant. Aim: Design, produce and assess the viability of a novel nanotechnological antibacterial thermo‐sensible intracanal medicament This involves encapsulating calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) within polylactic‐co‐glycolic acid (PLGA) nanoparticles (NPs) and dispersing them in a thermosensitive gel (Ca(OH)2‐NPs‐gel). In addition, perform in vitro and ex vivo assessments to evaluate tissue irritation and penetration capacity into dentinal tubules in comparison to free Ca(OH)2. Methodology: Reproducibility of Ca(OH)₂‐NPs was confirmed by obtaining the average size of the NPs, their polydispersity index, zeta potential and entrapment efficiency. Moreover, rheological studies of Ca(OH)2‐NPs‐gel were carried out with a rheometer, studying the oscillatory stress sweep, the mean viscosity value, frequency and temperature sweeps. Tolerance was assessed using the membrane of an embryonated chicken egg. In vitro Ca(OH)2 release was studied by direct dialysis in an aqueous media monitoring the amount of Ca(OH)2 released. Six extracted human teeth were used to study the depth of penetration of fluorescently labelled Ca(OH)2‐NPs‐gel into the dentinal tubules and significant differences against free Ca(OH)2 were calculated using one‐way anova. Results: Ca(OH)2‐NPs‐gel demonstrated to be highly reproducible with an average size below 200 nm, a homogeneous NPs population, negative surface charge and high entrapment efficiency. The analysis of the thermosensitive gel allowed us to determine its rheological characteristics, showing that at 10°C gels owned a fluid‐like behaviour meanwhile at 37°C they owned an elastic‐like behaviour. Ca(OH)2‐NPs‐gel showed a prolonged drug release and the depth of penetration inside the dentinal tubules increased in the most apical areas. In addition, it was found that this drug did not produce irritation when applied to tissues such as eggs' chorialantoidonic membrane. Conclusion: Calcium hydroxide‐loaded PLGA NPs dispersed in a thermosensitive gel may constitute a suitable alternative as an intracanal antibacterial medicament. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With increasing longevity globally, the search for effective and patient-friendly anti-aging solutions has been growing. Retinoic acid (Ret) is an FDA-approved anti-aging and anti-wrinkling formula, however, its poor solubility and poor tolerability hamper its use in cosmetically accepted formulations. In this study, cyclodextrins and arginine were investigated for improving the solubility and tolerability of retinoic acid through the formation of inclusion complexes and salt formation, respectively. Two different methods were employed: physical mixing and kneading. The prepared dispersions were investigated for molecular docking (MD), solubility, thermal and spectral analyses, cytotoxicity, and scratch assays. The optimized disperse systems were formulated in a gel formulation and characterized for rheological, in vitro release, and kinetics. The MD, DSC, and FTIR results indicated that both β- and hydroxy propyl (HP) β-cyclodextrins could host RA in their cavities and form inclusion complexes. Ret can form a salt with the basic amino acid arginine. Solubility studies of RA significantly (p < 0.01) enhanced by 14- to 81-fold increases with the investigated cyclodextrins and arginine. The cell viability recorded for Ret:HP β-CD K and Ret:arginine K was significantly increased compared to that for Ret alone. The IC50% recorded for azelaic acid (mild to non-irritant control), Ret, Ret:HP β-CD K, and Ret:arginine K were 1000, 485, 1100, and 895 µg/mL, respectively. The two carriers (HP β-CD and the amino acid arginine) were able to significantly (p < 0.05) reduce the irritation potential of Ret. Furthermore, comparable gap closure rates were recorded for Ret alone, Ret:HP β-CD K, and Ret:arginine K, indicating that inclusion complexation and ion pair formation reduced the irritation potentials without undermining the efficacy. The effect of spatial inhomogeneity on the dimensions of network polymers is investigated by using model networks containing highly crosslinked domains. It is found that the dimensions of network architecture consisting of densely crosslinked domains connected by long chains are larger than those of loosely crosslinked domains connected by short chains, given the cycle rank is the same. The cases with the domains connected by the domains are also investigated. In all cases, the dimensions are larger than the corresponding randomly crosslinked homogeneous networks. This is because the loosely crosslinked regions dominate the dimensions of network polymers. The master curve relationship found for the statistical networks is applicable also for the present types of spatial inhomogeneous network polymers when the cycle rank is increased to make the network well‐developed in a homologous series of networks. This article studies equilibrium singular configurations of gels and addresses open questions concerning gel energetics. We model a gel as an incompressible, immiscible and saturated mixture of a solid polymer and a solvent that sustain chemical interactions at the molecular level. We assume that the energy of the gel consists of the elastic energy of its polymer network plus the Flory-Huggins energy of mixing. The latter involves the entropic energies of the individual components plus that of interaction between polymer and solvent, with the temperature dependent Flory parameter, χ , encoding properties of the solvent. In particular, a good solvent promoting the mixing regime, is found below the threshold value χ = 0.5 , whereas the phase separating regime develops above that critical value. We show that cavities and singularities develop in the latter regime. We find two main classes of singularities: (i) drying out of the solvent, with water possibly exiting the gel domain through the boundary, leaving behind a core of exposed polymer at the centre of the gel; (ii) cavitation, in response to traction on the boundary or some form of negative pressure, with a cavity that can be either void or flooded by the solvent. The straightforward and unified mathematical approach to treat all such singularities is based on the construction of appropriate test functions, inspired by the particular states of uniform swelling or compression. The last topic of the article addresses a statistical mechanics rooted controversy in the research community, providing an experimental and analytic study in support of the phantom elastic energy versus the affine one. We use coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations to study deformation of networks and gels of linear and brush strands in both linear and nonlinear deformation regimes under constant pressure conditions. The simulations show that the Poisson ratio of networks and gels could exceed 0.5 in the nonlinear deformation regime. This behavior is due to the ability of the network and gel strands to sustain large reversible deformation, which, in combination with the finite strand extensibility results in strand alignment and monomer density, increases with increasing strand elongation. We developed a nonlinear network and gel deformation model which defines conditions for the Poisson ratio to exceed 0.5. The model predictions are in good agreement with the simulation results. Polysaccharides derived from diverse sources exhibit distinct rheological and gel properties, exerting a profound impact on their applicability in the food industry. In this study, we collected five Gracilaria chouae samples from distinct geographical regions, namely Rizhao (RZ), Lianyungang (LYG), Ningde (ND), Beihai (BH), and a wild source from Beihai (BHW). We conducted analyses on the chemical composition, viscosity, and rheological properties, as well as gel properties, to investigate the influence of chemical composition on variations in gel properties. The results revealed that the total sugar, sulfate content, and monosaccharide composition of G. chouae polysaccharides exhibit similarity; however, their anhydrogalactose content varies within a range of 15.31% to 18.98%. The molecular weight distribution of G. chouae polysaccharides ranged from 1.85 to 2.09 × 103 kDa. The apparent viscosity of the LYG and BHW polysaccharides was relatively high, whereas that of RZ and ND was comparatively low. The gel strength displayed a similar trend. BHW and LYG exhibited solid-like behavior, while ND, RZ, and BH demonstrated liquid-like characteristics at low frequencies. The redundancy analysis (RDA) analysis revealed a positive correlation between the texture profile analysis (TPA) characteristics and anhydrogalactose. Supramolecular metallogels combine the rheological properties of gels with the color, magnetism, and other properties of metal ions. Lanthanide ions such as Eu(III) can be valuable components of metallogels due to their fascinating luminescence. In this work, we combine Eu(III) and iminodiacetic acid (IDA) into luminescent hydrogels. We investigate the tailoring of the rheological properties of these gels by changes in their metal:ligand ratio. Further, we use the highly sensitive Eu(III) luminescence to obtain information about the chemical structure of the materials. In special, we take advantage of computational calculations to employ an indirect method for structural elucidation, in which the simulated luminescent properties of candidate structures are matched to the experimental data. With this strategy, we can propose molecular structures for different EuIDA gels. We also explore the usage of these gels for the loading of bioactive molecules such as OXA, observing that its aldose reductase activity remains present in the gel. We envision that the findings from this work could inspire the development of luminescent hydrogels with tunable rheology for applications such as 3D printing and imaging‐guided drug delivery platforms. Sodium‐alginate‐based aerogels possess wide prospects in the fields of packaging, aerospace, industrial construction and transportation because of their environmental compatibility and thermal insulation, but it is still a challenge to obtain a sodium alginate‐based aerogel with high flame retardancy and good thermal insulation. Herein, a sodium‐alginate‐based aerogel with high flame retardancy, thermal insulation and good hydrophobic properties was prepared by two‐step crosslinking strategy of phytic acid and metal ions and liquid phase deposition of trans‐cinnamic acid. As a result, the prepared SA/PA Mn+ aerogels obtained excellent flame retardancy (UL‐94 V‐0, LOI 50.1%) and rapid self‐extinguishing, and SA/PA Mn+ aerogels obtained good hydrophobic ability (CA = 134.2°). In addition, the mechanical properties of SA/PA Mn+ aerogels have also been improved, the compressive modulus increased from 0.66 to 6.37 MPa, and the specific modulus increased from 15.7 to 140.2 MPa cm −3 g−1. Metal nanoparticles (MNPs) have gained significant attention due to their multifunctional properties and broad applications in various fields. In this study, we present a novel and sustainable approach for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using waste materials, dried banana pith extract (BPE) and rice water. The synthesised AgNPs exhibit a size of 43 nm and zeta potential of −24.1 mV. A maximum temperature rise of 4°C with an efficiency of 41% is achieved within a short time by the photothermal activity. The qualitative colorimetric detection of Fe3+ and its quantitative spectroscopic detection are achieved in a linear detection range of 20–80 μM and with a limit of detection of 8.5 μM. The sensing mechanism is explained in terms of cooperative binding of Fe3+ ions to BPE-AgNPs. A homogeneous, flexible and stable AgNP-rice starch gel is formed. Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated skin disease with no cure. Intravenous arsenic trioxide (ATO) has been used to treat psoriasis in animal studies. However, the high toxicity of ATO limits its application to clinics for systemic administration. The aim of this study was to fabricate sustained-release ATO liposome gels (ATO-Lip-Gels) to be used for the treatment of psoriasis. The ATO Liposomes were prepared using a zinc acetate gradient method. ATO concentrations were analyzed by HPLC-HG-AFS. The ATO-Lip-Gels were characterized with respect to size, zeta potential, and entrapment efficiency. Stability, in vitro drug release, and in vivo efficacy were also evaluated. The optimal formulation of ATO-Lip was ATO (0.45%), S100 (9%), and cholesterol (1.5%) (W/V) in 0.3 mol/L zinc acetate and incubated for 10 min. In the in vitro drug release study, ATO-Lip-Gels exhibited a slower release profile of ATO than that from Gels only. Compared with the model group, ATO-Lip-Gels-H significantly reduced PASI scores after psoriasis in mice and was superior to tacrolimus at day 5. HE staining showed that the pathological changes caused by psoriasis in mice were significantly improved in the treatment groups, and ATO-Lip-Gels-H had the best effect among the treatment groups. ATO-Lip-Gels applied topologically to imiquimote-induced psoriatic plaque models significantly reduced the levels of key psoriatic cytokines such as IL-6 and TNF-α. We have developed ATO-Lip-Gels for the treatment of psoriasis, which demonstrated higher efficacy with the benchmark, Tacrolimus, and can be an alternative to the conventional treatment with Tacrolimus. Statins function beyond regulating cholesterol and, when administered systemically, can promote wound healing. However, studies have yet to explore the topical use of statins for wound healing. The present study demonstrated the topical administration of SIM and aimed to formulate, evaluate, and optimize Simvastatin (SIM)-encapsulated liposome gel carrier systems to facilitate successful topical wound healing. Liposomes containing SIM were formulated and optimized via a response surface methodology (RSM) using the thin-film hydration method. The effects of formulation variables, including the 1,2-dioleoyloxy-3-trimethylammoniumpropan (DOTAP) concentration, Span 80 concentration, and cholesterol concentration, on zeta potential (mV), entrapment efficacy (%), and particle size (nm) were studied. The optimized liposome formulation (F-07) exhibited a zeta potential value of 16.56 ± 2.51 mV, revealing robust stability and a high SIM encapsulation efficiency of 95.6 ± 4.2%, whereas its particle size of 190.3 ± 3.3 nm confirmed its stability and structural integrity. The optimized liposome gel demonstrated pseudoplastic flow behavior. This property is advantageous in topical drug delivery systems because of its ease of application, improved spreadability, and enhanced penetration, demonstrating prolonged SIM release. The assessment of the wound healing efficacy of the optimized liposomal gel formulation demonstrated a substantial decrease in wound size in mice on the sixteenth day post-wounding. These findings suggest that the use of liposomal gels is a potential drug delivery strategy for incorporating SIM, thereby augmenting its effectiveness in promoting wound healing. Hospital-acquired infections are considered a priority for public health systems since they pose a significant burden for society. High-touch surfaces of healthcare centers, including textiles, provide a suitable environment for pathogenic bacteria to grow, necessitating incorporating effective antibacterial agents into textiles. This paper introduces a highly durable antibacterial gel-like solution, Silver Shell™ finish, which contains chitosan-bound silver chloride microparticles. The study investigates the coating's environmental impact, health risks, and durability during repeated washing. The structure of the Silver Shell™ finish was studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The TEM images showed a core–shell structure, with chitosan forming a protective shell around groupings of silver microparticles. The field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) demonstrated the uniform deposition of Silver Shell™ on the surfaces of the fabrics. AATCC Test Method 100 was employed to quantitatively analyze the antibacterial properties of the fabrics coated with silver microparticles. Two types of bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli), were used in this study. The antibacterial results showed that after 75 wash cycles, a 100% reduction for both S. aureus and E. coli in the coated samples using crosslinking agents was observed. The coated samples without a crosslinking agent exhibited 99.88% and 99.81% reductions for S. aureus and E. coli after 50 washing cycles. To compare the antibacterial properties toward non-pathogenic and pathogenic strains of the same species, MG1655 model E. coli strain (ATCC 29213) and a multidrug-resistant clinical isolate were used. The results showed the antibacterial efficiency of the Silver ShellTM solution (up to 99.99% reduction) coated on cotton fabric. AATCC-147 was performed to investigate the coated samples' leaching properties and the crosslinking agent's effects against S. aureus and E. coli. All coated samples demonstrated remarkable antibacterial efficacy, even after 75 wash cycles. The crosslinking agent facilitated durable attachment between the silver microparticles and cotton substrate, minimizing the release of particles from the fabrics. Color measurements were conducted to assess the color differences resulting from the coating process. The results indicated fixation values of 44%, 32%, and 28% following 25, 50, and 75 washing cycles, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In energy applications, the use of materials with hierarchical porous structures and large surface areas is essential for efficient charge storage. These structures facilitate rapid electron and ion transport, resulting in high power density and quick charge/discharge capabilities. Carbon-based materials are extensively utilized due to their tunable properties, including pore sizes ranging from ultra- to macropores and surface polarity. Incorporating heteroatoms such as nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, phosphorus, and boron modifies the carbon structure, enhancing electrocatalytic properties and overall performance. A hierarchical pore structure is necessary for optimal performance, as it ensures efficient access to the material's core. The microstructure of carbon materials significantly impacts energy storage, with factors like polyaromatic condensation, crystallite structure, and interlayer distance playing crucial roles. Carbon aerogels, derived from the carbonization of organic gels, feature a sponge-like structure with large surface area and high porosity, making them suitable for energy storage. Their open pore structure supports fast ion transfer, leading to high energy and power densities. Challenges include maintaining mechanical or structural integrity, multifunctional features, and scalability. This review provides an overview of the current progress in carbon-based aerogels for energy applications, discussing their properties, development strategies, and limitations, and offering significant guidance for future research requirements. Objective: Intratympanic injections are a safe, well tolerated procedure routinely performed by ENT's specialists. Intratympanic injections of gels have the potential to deliver therapeutics into the cochlea through the round window membrane prolonging the release of drugs in the inner ear compartment. Aim of the present review is to summarize clinical trials testing pharmacological treatments for inner ear pathologies through intratympanic gel formulations. Data Sources: Online databases (Google scholar and PubMed) and registers (Clinicaltrials.gov and Euclinicaltrial) were used to identify clinical trials performed between 1990 and 2022. Review Methods: PRISMA criteria have been followed. Clinical trials testing gel formulations administered through local intratympanic injections and targeting inner ear disorders were included. All the reports were identified by the authors working in pairs sequentially selecting only studies respecting the inclusion criteria. Results: A total of 45 clinical studies have been noticed; the gels for intratympanic injection are in the form of poloxamers or hyaluronic acid combinations; the trials found target different kind of inner ear disorders: acquired‐stable SNHL, tinnitus, acute sudden SNHL, Meniere disease, cisplatin induced ototoxicity and hearing preservation in patients undergoing cochlear implant surgery. Conclusion: Few studies listed do not provide the specific kind of gel formulation used but only report the intratympanic delivery vehicle as "gel" or "thermogel". Multiple clinical studies have been targeting several forms of inner ear disorders by injecting different compounds through poloxamer and hyaluronic acid formulations.
