Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) occupies the abyssal layer of the world ocean and contributes to the global overturning circulation. It originates from dense shelf water, which forms from brine rejection during sea ice production. An important region of AABW formation has been identified off the Cape Darnley polynya. However, it remains unclear why and how high ice production leads to AABW formation. Using moored acoustic measurements and a satellite microwave algorithm, we reveal that underwater frazil ice dominates in the polynya. This underwater ice formation prevents heat-insulating surface-cover ice forming, thereby enabling efficient ice production. The high ice production in the nearshore and longer residence times create high-salinity source water for the AABW. Underwater frazil ice occurs as long as strong winds continue and occasionally penetrates depths of at least 80 m. Deep-penetrating frazil ice is particularly prominent in this polynya, while it also occurs in other Antarctic coastal polynyas.

To clarify the effect of basal melting of ice tongues/ice shelf on the CO2 system in the Antarctic continental margin, seawater samples were collected for analysis of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), total alkalinity (TA), nutrients, chlorophyll a (chl.a), and oxygen isotopic ratios at the ice front of the Shirase Glacier Tongue (SGT) in Lutzow-Holm Bay (LHB), East Antarctica during the summers of 2017 and 2018. At depths greater than similar to 20 dbar in LHB, CO2 system parameters were strongly influenced by the dilution effect of SGT basal melting and the inflow of modified Circumpolar Deep Water (mCDW). The distributions of DIC and TA agreed well with an offshore origin of mCDW that flowed beneath the SGT and mixing of basal meltwater and mCDW beneath the SGT. The fraction of SGT meltwater was highest at the station near the ice front. Dilution by SGT basal meltwater reduced the partial pressure of CO2 in the mCDW from 431 to 387 mu atm. The water then became a sink rather than source of atmospheric CO2. In the sea surface, DIC and TA were strongly influenced by biological processes. Salinity-normalized DIC decreased with the increase of salinity-normalized TA in accord with 106:16 C:N molar stoichiometry; the chl.a concentration at the sea surface was as high as 31 mu g L-1.

The Southern Ocean is a vast net sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), with marine phytoplankton playing a crucial role in CO2 fixation. We assessed how changes in the dominant phytoplankton community and net primary productivity (NPP) affected variations in the partial pressure of CO2 in surface water (pCO(2)(sw)) in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean during austral summer. pCO2sw was negatively correlated with total phytoplankton and diatom abundances, as estimated from pigment signatures, in the zone south of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current; however, pCO(2)(sw) was not correlated with haptophyte abundance. Additionally, a stronger correlation was found between pCO(2)(sw) and total phytoplankton NPP than between chlorophyll a concentration and pCO(2)(sw). We reconstructed pCO(2)(sw) at inter-annual scale using satellite data and assessed the inter-annual variability of air-sea CO2 flux. Over the period from 1997 to 2007, the integrated CO2 fluxes over the study region showed very large variations from a small source to a strong sink. Variations in the integrated CO2 fluxes were also correlated with changes in satellite-derived phytoplankton community in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean and changes in the dominant phytoplankton community may control CO2 dynamics in the marginal ice zone.

An in situ measurement system was developed for continuous observations of the mole fractions of atmospheric oxygen (defined as δ(O2/N2)) and carbon dioxide (CO2) and the continuous observation was conducted onboard the research vessel SHIRASE 5003 during its voyage between Australia and Syowa Station, Antarctica, in 2017–2018. The CO2 variation was low with respect to that of δ(O2/N2) in the Southern Ocean, suggesting that the land biospheric and fossil-fuel derived CO2 and O2 emissions negligibly influenced the observations. Therefore, the observed significant variations in the atmospheric O2/N2 can be attributed to the atmosphere-ocean gas exchange. During the southbound voyage in December 2017, we observed large spatial variations in δ(O2/N2) due to marine biological production on the western side of the cruise track. Oceanic O2 fluxes based on a simple model and atmospheric δ(O2/N2) variability were consistent with past oceanic observations. No clear longitudinal gradient in δ(O2/N2) was observed at latitudes toward south of 60° S in December 2017 and February–March 2018. However, local δ(O2/N2) maxima were observed in regions with active marine biological production in December 2017. These observations indicate that local O2 fluxes can also modify the spatial distribution of atmospheric δ(O2/N2) in the Southern Ocean.

The ongoing rise in atmospheric CO2 concentration is causing rapid increases in seawater pCO2 levels. However, little is known about the potential impacts of elevated CO2 availability on the phytoplankton assemblages in the Southern Ocean’s oceanic regions. Therefore, we conducted four incubation experiments using surface seawater collected from the subantarctic zone (SAZ) and the subpolar zone (SPZ) in the Australian sector of the Southern Ocean during the austral summer of 2011–2012. For incubations, FeCl3 solutions were added to reduce iron (Fe) limitation for phytoplankton growth. Ambient and high (~750 µatm) CO2 treatments were then prepared with and without addition of CO2-saturated seawater, respectively. Non-Fe-added (control) treatments were also prepared to assess the effects of Fe enrichment (overall, control, Fe-added, and Fe-and-CO2-added treatments). In the initial samples, the dominant phytoplankton taxa shifted with latitude from haptophytes to diatoms, likely reflecting silicate availability in the water. Under Fe-enriched conditions, increased CO2 level significantly reduced the accumulation of biomarker pigments in haptophytes in the SAZ and AZ, whereas a significant decrease in diatom markers was only detected in the SAZ. The CO2-related changes in phytoplankton community composition were greater in the SAZ, most likely due to the decrease in coccolithophore biomass. Our results suggest that an increase in CO2, if it coincides with Fe enrichment, could differentially affect the phytoplankton community composition in different geographical regions of the Southern Ocean, depending on the locally dominant taxa and environmental conditions.

Formation of dense shelf water (DSW) in coastal polynyas (open water or thin sea-ice cover) in the sea-ice zone around Antarctica supplies Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) through overflow down the continental slope. In coastal polynyas, atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) is absorbed by the ocean in the early spring because of active primary production, and DSW formation is an important process for transporting this carbon from the sea surface to the deep ocean. However, there have been few quantitative evaluations of carbon consumption by active primary production and transport in coastal polynyas. Here, we examined the carbon dynamics in the Cape Darnley polynya (CDP), East Antarctica during austral summer 2009, by using carbonate system parameters combined with oceanographic mooring data. The partial pressure of CO2 in the CDP surface water was lower than that of the atmosphere and the mean and standard deviation of sea−air CO2 flux was estimated as −6.5 ± 6.9 mmol C m−2 d−1 (a negative value indicates absorption of atmospheric CO2 by the ocean). Vertical profiles of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentration showed that concentrations in the bottom layer near the ocean floor were lower (by about 20 μmol kg−1) than those in the ambient water (e.g., modified Circumpolar Deep Water, mCDW). The low-DIC in the shelf water was maintained by the strong biological uptake of carbon imported from high-DIC mCDW within the water column. Therefore, low-DIC DSW overflowed down the continental slope, and low-DIC concentrations were maintained through an export pathway to the continental shelf. The annual production of dissolved organic carbon and particulate organic carbon on the shelf was estimated as 0.7 × 1011–1.5 × 1011 mol C using the data for the DIC of DSW and current velocity data from a mooring in the CDP. Our results provide quantitative estimates for the potential role of carbon consumption by the active primary production and carbon transport by dense water formation in Antarctic coastal polynyas.

Phytoplankton population dynamics play an important role in biogeochemical cycles in the Southern Ocean during austral summer. However, the relationship between phytoplankton community composition and primary productivity remains elusive in this region. We investigated the community composition and photosynthetic physiology of surface phytoplankton assemblages in the Australian sector of the Southern Ocean from December 2010 to January 2011. There were significant latitudinal variations in hydrographic and biological parameters along 110°E and 140°E. Surface (5 m) chlorophyll a (chl a) concentrations measured with high-performance liquid chromatography varied between 0.18 and 0.99 mg m−3. The diatom contribution to the surface chl a biomass increased in the south, as estimated with algal chemotaxonomic pigment markers, while the contributions of haptophytes and chlorophytes decreased. In our photosynthesis–irradiance (P–E) curve experiment, the maximum photosynthetic rate normalized to chl a ( $$P_{ \hbox{max} }^{*}$$ ), initial slope (α *), the maximum quantum yield of carbon fixation (Φ c max), and the photoinhibition index (β *) were higher in the region where diatoms contributed >50 % to the chl a biomass. In addition, there were statistically significant correlations between the diatom contribution to the chl a biomass and the P–E parameters. These results suggested that the changes in the phytoplankton community composition, primarily in diatoms, could strongly affect photosynthetic physiology in the Australian sector of the Southern Ocean.

Partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) in surface water and vertical profiles of the carbonate system parameters were measured during austral summer in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean (64–67° S, 32–58° E) in January 2006 to understand the CO2 dynamics of seawater in the seasonal ice zone. Surface-water pCO2 ranged from 275 to 400 μatm, and longitudinal variations reflected the dominant influence of water temperature and dilution by sea ice meltwater between 32 and 40° E and biological productivity between 40 and 58° E. Using carbonate system data from the temperature minimum layer (−1.9 °C < T < −1.5 °C, 34.2 < S < 34.5), we examined the winter-to-summer evolution of surface-water pCO2 and the factors affecting it. Our results indicate that pCO2 increased by as much as 32 μatm, resulting mainly from the increase in water temperature. At the same time as changes in sea ice concentration and surface-water pCO2, the air–sea CO2 flux, which consists of the exchange of CO2 between sea ice and atmosphere, changed from −1.1 to +0.9 mmol C m−2 day−1 between winter and summer. These results suggest that, for the atmosphere, the seasonal ice zone acts as a CO2 sink in winter and a temporary CO2 source in summer immediately after the retreat of sea ice. Subsequent biological productivity likely decreases surface-water pCO2 and the air–sea CO2 flux becomes negative, such that in summer the study area is again a CO2 sink with respect to the atmosphere.

[1] In this study, we present evidence that Antarctic and Arctic sea ice act as sink for atmospheric CO2 during periods of snowmelt and surface flooding. The CO2 flux measured directly at the flooded sea ice surface (Fflood) constituted a net CO2 sink of −1.1 ± 0.9 mmol C m−2 d−1 (mean ± 1 SD), which was an order of magnitude higher than the flux measured at the snow-air surface (Fsnow) and bare ice surface (Fice). The Fsnow/Fflood ratio decreased with increasing water equivalent of snow and superimposed-ice, suggesting that the properties of snow and superimposed-ice formation affect the magnitude of the CO2 flux. The Fsnow/Fflood ratio ranged from 0.1 to 0.5, illustrating that 50–90% of the potential flux at the flooded surface was reduced due to the presence of snow/superimposed-ice. Hence, snow cover properties and superimposed-ice play an important role in the CO2 fluxes across the sea ice-snow-atmosphere interface.

The Southern Ocean is an important region for investigation because it has a major effect on global air-to-sea CO2 fluxes and because of the ocean acidification resulting from the uptake of anthropogenic carbon, leading to serious consequences for marine ecosystems in the near future. We estimated long-term trends of ocean acidification in surface waters of the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean, based on the summer observational records of oceanic CO2 partial pressure and related surface properties during 1969–2003. The computed pH time series exhibited substantial decreasing trends in the extensive region from the subtropical to polar zones. The mean rates of pH decrease over the 35-year period were 0.0011 to 0.0013 yr−1 in the zones north of the Polar Front and were larger in the polar zone (0.0020 yr−1). The contribution of trends in sea surface temperature to the trends of pH decrease was small in all zones. The high rate of pH decrease in the polar zone was attributed to the supply of dissolved inorganic carbon from lower layers, enhanced by intensified wind stress and superimposed onto the accumulation of anthropogenic CO2. A preliminary evaluation of thermodynamic changes in the upper carbonate system, using observational results, projected that the polar zone south of the Polar Front would be undersaturated with respect to aragonite in summer after 80 years.

[1] Dissolved methane (DM) concentrations were measured in 17 lakes as part of the operations of the 45th Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition in ice-free rocky areas along the eastern coast of Lutzow-Holm Bay (Syowa Oasis) in East Antarctica in the summer of 2003–2004. DM at the surfaces of 14 lakes ranged from the atmospheric equilibrium concentration (about 4 nmol L−1 for freshwater) to 385 nmol L−1. Relatively low DM of less than 50 nmol L−1 were observed in about 60% of the lakes. Many of the lakes (area fraction of 85%) were supersaturated and are thus sources of methane to the atmosphere. The exchange coefficient was calculated using wind speed data at Syowa Station. Area fraction frequency distributions with four surface DM ranges were applied to all lakes at Syowa Oasis (110 lakes, total lake area of 9 km2). Extrapolation to the whole Syowa Oasis gives an estimate of total emission of about 1 t CH4 yr−1. This is the first estimation of methane flux from the surfaces of thawed lakes to the atmosphere in Antarctica. Since a methane efflux of about 2 t CH4 yr−1 was estimated in our previous study from frozen bubbles in lake ice, a total amount of 3 t CH4 yr−1 would be released to the atmosphere from the lakes during the ice melting season (December–January) at Syowa Oasis.

The horizontal structure of processes causing increases in ozone in the Antarctic polar vortex was examined using data measured in 2003 from an ozonesonde observation campaign at Syowa Station (39.6°E, 69.0°S) and from the Improved Limb Atmospheric Spectrometer II (ILAS-II) onboard the Advanced Earth Observing Satellite II. The ILAS-II data are daily and distributed uniformly at 14 points in the zonal direction, mostly at polar latitudes. The Antarctic ozone hole that developed in 2003 was one of the largest recorded. The period of focus in this study is 26 September through 24 October, when a strong polar vortex was situated in the stratosphere. An ozone mixing ratio contour (1.0 ppmv) moved downward near a height of 20 km during the period of focus. This increase in ozone is likely to result from downward transport of ozone-rich air originating from lower latitudes by Brewer–Dobson circulation. First, the descent rate of the mixing ratio contour was estimated by taking the geometric height as the vertical coordinate for the deep vortex interior around 20 km. A significant longitudinal dependence was observed. An analysis using ECMWF operational data shows that this dependence can be approximately explained by longitudinally dependent vertical movements of the isentropes caused by a zonal wavenumber-1 quasi-stationary planetary wave with amplitude and phases varying on a seasonal time scale. Next, the descent rate was calculated around 500 K (around 20 km) by taking the potential temperature (isentrope) as the vertical coordinate. The longitudinal dependence was still present using this coordinate, meaning that the ozone mixing ratio and its increase are not constant on the isentropic layer even in the interior of the polar vortex. A backward trajectory analysis showed that air parcels with large ozone mixing ratios were mostly transported from the polar vortex boundary region. This result suggests that lateral transport/mixing is important even before the breakup of the polar vortex. Results from a tracer–tracer correlation analysis of O3 and long-lived constituent N2O were also consistent with this inference. The contribution of lateral mixing to the increase in ozone was estimated at about 17% ± 4% that of the Brewer–Dobson circulation around 20 km, using the calculated descent rates. The results of this study also imply that Lagrangian downward motions in the vortex interior are not correctly estimated without accounting for lateral mixing, even if the polar vortex is dynamically stable.

[1] This is the first estimation of methane efflux from bubbles in lake ice in Antarctica. Bubbles suspended in shallow ice in 20 lakes were observed as part of the operations of the 45th Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition in ice-free rocky areas along the eastern coast of Lutzow-Holm Bay (Syowa Oasis) in East Antarctica in 2004. Anomalous methane concentrations in bubbles suspended in lake ice and anomalous dissolved methane concentrations in lake water were frequently found. Methane concentrations in bubbles varied of 5 orders of magnitude, from 1.9 ppmv to 18% vol/vol. A procedure that makes estimations of methane flux from ice bubbles possible has been developed, on the basis of a relationship between bubble-density distribution, brightness observed by digital photographs, and methane concentration in bubbles. Such a procedure applied to Lake Oyako Ike in the Skarvsnes area, where the maximum methane concentration was observed, suggests that total bubble volume is about 0.6% of ice volume and the mass of methane in bubbles in the lake is about 74 kg. Almost all gases in bubbles are released to the atmosphere in the early ice melt season (a period of a few weeks in December and January). By applying area fraction frequency distributions to methane concentration ranges for 20 lakes surveyed, extrapolation to the whole Syowa Oasis, including 110 lakes, would give a provisional estimate of total emission of about 2 tons-CH4/yr.

Air withdrawn from the firn at four polar sites (Dome Fuji, H72 and YM85, Antarctica and North GRIP, Greenland) was measured for δ 15 No f N2 and δ 18 Oo f O2 to test for the presence of convective air mixing in the top part of the firn, known as the “convective zone”. Understanding the convective zone and its possible relationship to surface conditions is important for constructing accurate ice-core greenhouse gas chronologies and their phasing with respect to climate change. The thickness of the convective zone was inferred from a regression line with barometric slope of the data in the deep firn. It is less than a few meters at H72 and NGRIP, whereas a substantial convective zone is found at Dome Fuji (8.6±2.6 m) and YM85 (14.0±1.8 m). By matching the outputs of a diffusion model to the data, effective eddy diffusivities required to mix the firn air are found. At the surface of Dome Fuji and YM85, these are found to be several times greater than the molecular diffusivity in free air. The crossover from dominance of convection to molecular diffusion takes place at 7±2, 11±2 and 0.5±0.5 m at Dome Fuji, YM85 and NGRIP, respectively. These depths can be used as an alternative definition of the convective zone thickness. The firn permeability at Dome Fuji is expected to be high because of intense firn metamorphism due to the low accumulation rate and large seasonal air temperature variation at the site. The firn layers in the top several meters are exposed to strong temperature gradients for several decades, leading to large firn grains and depth hoar that enhance permeability. The thick convective zone at YM85 is unexpected because the temperature, accumulation rate and near-surface density are comparable to NGRIP. The strong katabatic wind at YM85 is probably responsible for creating the deep convection. The largest convective zone found in this study is still only half of the current inconsistency implied from the deep ice core gas isotopes and firn densification models. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Sampling of atmospheric aerosol particles was carried out at Syowa station, Antarctica (39.58°E, 69.00°S) in 1998. For a better understanding of sea-salt chemistry in the coastal Antarctic regions, individual sea-salt particles were analysed using a scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SEM-EDX). Individual particle analysis indicates that more sea-salt particles were modified in fine particles (0.2–2 μm in diameter) through heterogeneous reactions mainly with gaseous sulfur species in the summer and reactive nitrogen oxides in the winter–spring. In particular, sea-salt particles in the coastal Antarctic atmosphere may be modified by heterogeneous reactions with not only SO 2 and H 2 SO 4 but also volatile sulfur species (e.g. CH 3 SO 3 H, DMS and DMSO) derived from bioactivity on the ocean surface during the summer. Also, low air temperature and a larger extent of sea ice offshore Syowa probably enhanced release of fractionated sea-salt particles (S-rich, Mg-rich, K-rich and Ca-rich) from the surface of snow and sea ice, particularly in September–October 1998. In addition, we attempt to estimate the scavenging rate of atmospheric sulfur species and reactive nitrogen oxides by dry deposition of sea-salt particles. Our estimation suggests that the upper limit of the scavenging rate of atmospheric sulfur species by sea-salt particles could rise to approximately 0.5 nmol m −2 day −1 at Syowa station during the summer. This value corresponded to about 30% of the concentration of particulate sulfur species such as non-sea-salt (nss)-SO 2− 4 and CH 3 SO − 3 and ∼10% of total atmospheric sulfur species (nss-SO 2− 4 , CH 3 SO − 3 and SO 2 ). In contrast, the estimated NO − 3 scavenging rate by sea-salt particles was ∼0.2 nmol m −2 day −1 , which is similar to the dry deposition rate of HNO 3 +N 2 O 5 (approximately 0.2–0.3 nmol m −2 day −1 ). Hence, sea-salt particles probably play an important role as scavengers of acidic species in the coastal Antarctic regions. DOI: 10.1111/j.1600-0889.2005.00142.x

Systematic collections of stratospheric air samples have been conducted over Japan since 1985 using a balloon-borne cryogenic sampler. The collection of stratospheric air samples was also carried out twice over Scandinavia and once over Antarctica. Vertical profiles of CO 2 concentration thus obtained over these locations were quite similar to each other; CO 2 concentration decreased with increasing altitude in the lower stratosphere and reached an almost constant value in the mid-stratosphere. δ 13 C of stratospheric CO 2 observed over these locations enriched with increasing altitude. A negative correlation between δ 13 C and CO 2 concentration with Δδ 13 C/ΔCO 2 of −0.02‰ ppmv −1 was found in the lower stratosphere. Although CO 2 concentration was almost constant in the mid-stratosphere, the δ 13 C enrichment was observed in succession. δ 18 O of stratospheric CO 2 also enriched with increasing altitude. The enrichment was significant; δ 18 O was almost 0‰ at the tropopause and reached a maximum value of about 11‰ at a layer with N 2 O concentration of about 10 ppbv. A compact relation between δ 18 O and N 2 O concentration was consistently observed for these locations. Stratosperic CO 2 over Japan showed a secular increase with an average rate of 1.4 ppmv yr −1 for the period 1985–2000. Air samples were collected from different depths of the firn layer at Dome Fuji in December 1998 and analyzed for CH4 concentrations. The age distribution of CH4 in the firn was calculated by using a one-dimensional numerical model, and then the inverse method was applied to reconstruct variations of atmospheric CH4 in the past. The age distribution function was calculated by including processes of molecular diffusion, downward air advection and bubble trapping in the snow-ice transition zone. Once the age distribution function is calculated, the vertical distribution of CH4 in the firn layer can be reconstructed by a linear combination of the age distribution functions weighted by the atmospheric CH4 concentrations in the past. Therefore, the most plausible past atmospheric record of CH4 can be derived iteratively so that its observed profile in the firn layer was reproduced well. In order to check the calculation scheme, the estimated variation of atmospheric CH4 was compared with direct measurements in the Antarctic region. They were in good agreement with each other, even for rapid slowing down of the secular increase observed in the 1990's.

For a better understanding of the cycles of atmospheric trace gases, we have continued to systematically collect air samples in the stratosphere over Japan since 1985, using a balloon-borne cryogenic sampler. The collection of the stratospheric air samples was also made twice over the Scandinavian Peninsula in 1997 and once over Japanese Antarctic station, Syowa in 1998. The air samples collected were analyzed not only for the concentrations of CO2, CH4, N2O and various halocarbons but also for their isotopic ratios. These measurements revealed that, in general, the concentrations of all gas components decreased and their isotopic ratios increased with increasing height, due to influence of atmospheric transport and photochemical destruction in the stratosphere. However, detailed inspection of the results indicated that the observed vertical profiles of the respective components were quantitatively different, depending on location and time. Stratospheric CO2 over Japan showed the secular increase with an average rate of 1.4 ppmv/year for the period 1985–1999.

To determine annual layers for reconstructing the past environment at annual resolution from ice cores, we employed snow-stake data back to 1972, tritium content, solid electrical conductivity measurements (ECM) and stratigraphic properties for the 73m ice core at the H72 site, east Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. the average annual surface mass balance at H72 is 307 mma–1w.e. during the last 27 years from continuous accumulation data, 317 mma–1 w.e. according to the densification model and 311 mma–1 w.e. according to the average surface mass balance for 167 years based on annual-layer counting. the ECM age is closely coincident with tritium age, and corresponds with the snow-stake record back to AD 1972 from the surface to 15 m depth. the H72 ice core is dated as AD 1831by ECMat 73.16 mdepth.The time series of yearly surface mass balance at H72 shows an almost constant 311 mm a–1 w.e. for the last 167 years. the oxygen-isotope records indicate a significant trend to lower values, with negative gradient of 1.7% (100 years)–1.

Snow samples collected over sea ice near Syowa Station were analyzed for ionic constituents to understand sulfate depletion in sea salt aerosol particles, which have often been observed in winter in the coastal region of Antarctica. Ratios of Cl/Na^+ in snow were higher than that in sea water, whereas SO_4^/Na^+ ratios were lower in snow samples. The degree of SO_4^2 depletion relative to the sea water composition increased with increase in Na^+ concentration. From comparison with a simple chemical mass balance model using the SO_4^/Na^+ ratios in the samples, depletion of SO_4^ in snow is considered to be largely attributed to the fractionation of sulfate by forming Mirabilite (Na_2SO_4・10H_2O) during sea ice growth. The Br/Na^+ ratios of the snow predicted from the fractionation model differ significantly from the observed values : positive deviations were found in dark early July and negative deviations were seen in September. This could have resulted from Br_2 release from the snow after local sunrise. In winter aerosols collected at Syowa Station, depletion of SO_4^ was also found. Based on statistics of meteorological data at Syowa Station, as appropriate conditions of meteorological and salt concentrations in drifting snow particle were fulfilled, the depletion of SO_4^2 in aerosol particles in winter can be explained by sublimation of salted drifting snow particles from the sea ice area.

Water temperature and salinity variations were observed below fast ice in Ongul Strait, Antarctica, in 1998. Vertical profiles of temperature and salinity were obtained with a conductivity-temperature-depth profiler, and temperature and salinity were continuously observed with moored sensors. Intraseasonal variations were observed in both fields. Especially, temperature variation of about 0.05℃ was apparent on the time scale of about one month near the thermocline depth. Seasonal variations of temperature and salinity were similar to those observed in 1982-1983 and 1990-1991. However, the temporally averaged temperature and salinity for 1998 showed differences from those for previous years; temperature was higher in 1998 than in 1982-1983 and 1990-1991 at middle to deep layers, and salinity was intermediate between 1982 (more saline) and 1990-1991 (fresher) throughout the water column.
